Voltaire wrote that the homeland is the place where one lives happily. In these words I see exactly what Bellagio is for me: my joy of life! The place where I was born, who saw me grow up and where I still live. That little corner of paradise where I'm lucky enough to admire every day in all its beauty. The passion that I have for the lake was transmitted to me by my father who took me by boat when I felt a bit down. At the age of 14 I had my first boat and, from that moment, I could not do without it. Today I present "Queen Helen".

Thinking of visiting the town of Bellagio in Italy and wondering what to expect and what there’s to see and do in Bellagio? In this guide, you can learn about the best things to do in Bellagio, Lake Como, and find all the practical information for your visit. Take a look!
Bellagio often referred to as the Pearl of Lake Como, is probably the most famous town of Como Lake in Italy. Its picturesque and strategic location at the junction where the Y-shaped lake splits into three branches, makes it one of the most sought-after destinations of Lake Como. I’ve been to Bellagio a few times and every time, this lovely town leaves me wanting to go back for more.
Based on our several trips (both – in high and low season) we have now updated this guide featuring all the best things you can do in and near Bellagio . I hope that it will give you some ideas of what to expect when visiting this charming little town in Italy’s Lombardy region.
Please note that as lovely as Bellagio is, it’s quite a small town that doesn’t require more than a few hours to visit. In fact, many people come here as a day trip from Milan , often with this popular tour that visits a few of the nicest places along Lake Como in a day. At the same time, the location of Bellagio is perfect for visiting the best towns on Lake Como and many other interesting places nearby. So you can easily spend a few days in this area and never get bored.
In this article, you can find inspiration and tips for the best things to do in Bellagio, some of the stunning places to see nearby, as well as Bellagio hotel recommendations and practical tips for your visit . Find out!

Here are the best places to see and things to see and do in Bellagio, Italy:
1. Stroll the picturesque streets of Bellagio
The best way to discover Bellagio is without a doubt by taking a walk through its picturesque old town center . The town is situated on two levels: the lower part by the lake, and the higher part that requires some uphill walking on cobbled streets and staircases. You may want to trade your high-heeled sandals for something more comfortable when visiting Bellagio.
There are just a handful of streets filled with shops and restaurants in central Bellagio, so you can easily explore each and every one of them.
The most famous street in Bellagio is Salita Serbelloni . Once you climb all the way to the top, turn around, and you’ll see the most famous postcard-view of Bellagio (see the featured image at the top of this article).
Also, don’t miss Chiesa San Giacomo . This lovely little church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries and has a quite unique interior with a 6th-century altar and some 10th-century mosaics. The entrance is free of charge.
Good to know: When we first visited Bellagio in November, we had the whole sleepy town all to ourselves. However, in high season Bellagio is bustling with life (and that’s an understatement). In that case, try to get a bit off the beaten path – while it’s very busy near the harbor and the most popular streets, there are plenty of quieter streets where you’ll hardly see anyone.
On our recent trip in August, Bellagio was a beehive. But it did get much calmer later in the afternoon. So if you can, avoid the area around the harbor and the town center during the busiest hours of the day. You can first explore the places nearby and then get back to Bellagio in the late afternoon – early evening when it’s much more enjoyable.
TIP: If you are short on time and want to see the best that Bellagio has to offer, consider a Hidden Corners of Bellagio walking tour .
2. Walk to Punta Spartivento
One of the nicest things you really have to do in Bellagio is walk to Punta Spartivento. It’s the point at the very end of the peninsula, where Lake Como splits into three different branches.
I can just imagine how beautiful this area would look like from above, but even standing on the ground the views are spectacular. In the distance, you can see several other towns along the shores of Lake Como and also the snowcapped mountains – picture perfect.
There is also a restaurant here, La Punta. Get a drink and admire the beautiful views over the lake and watch the locals come and go in their colorful wooden boats.
Good to know: If you are visiting Bellagio in summer, you can also go for a swim here. In August, we saw several people swimming at Punta Spartivento.
3. Enjoy the views along the waterfront promenade
If you walk along the lakeshore in the southwestern direction from the Bellagio harbor, you’ll find some of the nicest views of Bellagio.
Here, you can admire the colorful old town from a distance, with the mountain peaks towering above the lake even further. The views of Lake Como (in all directions) are also amazing!
If you continue further down following the waterside, you’ll reach Villa Melzi, one of the best places to see in Bellagio (more info below).
4. Take a little tourist train
A little tourist train , also called the Bellagio Express, is another nice way to explore Bellagio and the surrounding area. I’m not sure when it runs exactly, but if you are visiting Bellagio anywhere between May and September, it should be operating. I think it even runs in August and October.
If you are short on time, you can just ride this little tourist train without getting off. However, the biggest advantage of this little train is that it allows you to hop on and off at several locations, therefore making it really easy to explore this hilly area.
If you plan your time well, you can use this train as your transportation to visit Pescallo, Visgnola, San Giovanni, and Villa Melzi.
Good to know: You can find the tourist train on the little square right next to the harbor. You can get the tickets on the spot and they take cash and cards. Most recently, the ticket was just 5 EUR for adults and half the price for the kids.
5. Visit the gardens of Villa Melzi
Villa Melzi is one of the main points of interest near Bellagio. Built in the early 19th century it is still in private hands today. While you can’t visit the villa inside, the beautiful botanical gardens, museum, and chapel are open to the public.
The Family chapel is absolutely impressive and not to be missed! Further, walk along the lake promenade until you reach a beautiful Moorish pavilion with impressive sculptures.
The gardens of Villa Melzi (I Giardini di Villa Melzi) are home to a large number of exotic trees and plants. They are particularly beautiful in spring when azaleas and rhododendrons are in full bloom.
These well-kept botanical gardens are worth a visit in other seasons as well and give you access to some of the most spectacular views of Lake Como.
If you are visiting Bellagio between April and October, don’t miss Villa Melzi and its gardens. It’s one of the top places to see in Bellagio!
6. Parco di Villa Serbelloni
Alternatively or in addition to Villa Melzi, you can also visit the gardens of Villa Serbelloni ( Parco di Villa Serbelloni or Giardini di Villa Serbelloni ). I thought the gardens were part of Bellagio’s most luxurious hotel with the same name ( Hotel Villa Serbelloni ), but apparently, it’s not the case. The gardens belong to the Rockefeller Foundation and are on top of the hill, whereas the hotel is privately owned and is located by the lake.
Also, the gardens of Villa Serbelloni can only be visited with a guided tour. It departs at set times and requires a minimum of 6 people. The entrance is close to the church. Here you can find more practical information and get tickets . If you want to visit these gardens, it’s best to book in advance since the availability is quite limited.
Good to know: The gardens of Villa Melzi are not only more impressive, but also much easier to explore at your own pace than the gardens of Villa Serbelloni. So if you visit just one of these gardens in Bellagio, Villa Melzi is probably a better choice. On the other hand, the gardens of Villa Serbelloni are very different and offer different views, so if you have time, see if you can visit both.
7. Pescallo village
Visiting Pescallo is one of the best things to do in Bellagio. This old fishermen’s village is tucked away behind a steep hill and is therefore hidden from the crowds. It’s a perfect place to escape the hustle and bustle of Bellagio.
In summer, Pescallo is a popular place to be for various water sports . You can rent a kayak, a SUP, take a boat ride on the lake, or go kayaking with a local guide .
Pescallo is just a short walk from Bellagio (10-15min). First, make your way to the town hall (Comune di Bellagio) close to the ferry station. From there you have to take the steps following a sign indicating Pescallo. Note that Bellagio – Pescallo walk is uphill and requires negotiating some narrow alleys and staircases. If you are not up for it, just take the earlier-mentioned tourist train.
8. Go shopping
This might look like a weird suggestion to some, shopping , but that’s what Bellagio is well known for. Some luxury hotels in the area even orgaize VIP shopping tours to Bellagio by private boat – it’s that famous! We were told by the locals that if they need to buy anything, they also come to Bellagio. So it’s not just for tourists.
In town, you’ll find everything from souvenir shops, and local arts and crafts to the most expensive designer boutiques.
Bellagio is a real shoppers’ paradise!
I didn’t know this, but Como town is apparently the best place to buy silk in Europe , maybe even in the world. Silk production in Como started in the early 15th century, attracting many renowned artists and other fancy folks to the area. It has contributed a lot to the fame and development of Lake Como.
Here you can read all about Lake Como’s silk and don’t forget to look for some stunning silk apparel at the fashion boutiques in Bellagio. See if you can find silk clothing and accessories from the famous local brands Mantero or Frey. A silk scarf makes for a really nice souvenir or gift!
If you are looking for some good Italian wine, try Enoteca Principessa. This little wine shop is tucked away in one of the narrow alleys of Bellagio and is considered a real hidden gem by wine lovers. You can try some wines, get a bottle for dinner, or even have wine shipped to your home country.
9. Take a boat on Lake Como
One of the best ways to discover Lake Como is from the water. As already mentioned, you can rent a kayak or a SUP and explore the beautiful shores of Lake Como.
There are also numerous possibilities for further boat trips ranging from regular passenger ferries to countless boat tour options and also private taxi boats…
Bellagio’s unique central location makes it a perfect base for exploring all the other towns and famous villas along Lake Como.
You’ll find private boat tours that pass all the famous villas and the shores of central Lake Como. You can book a private boat trip in advance ( this highly-rated private sailing boat tour runs from Bellagio, and this classic speedboat tour can pick you up in Bellagio too), or simply try to find a boat when you get there. However, if your time in Bellagio is limited, I highly recommend booking in advance or you risk not finding any available boats.
TIP: The nearby town of Varenna is one of the nicest little towns of Lake Como and it’s just a 20 min by boat from Bellagio. A regular passenger ferry runs every 20-30 minutes and costs about 5 EUR one way. So if you are looking for a nice day trip from Bellagio, consider Varenna. You can also add Menaggio and Cadenabbia-Tremezzo areas to your itinerary.
If you want to visit the town of Como from Bellagio, it will probably take you a good part of the day – depending on the season, the boat ride alone is about 1-2 hrs one way.
10. Visit Villa Carlotta and Villa Balbianello
Villa Carlotta in Tremezzo is one of the most beautiful villas of Lake Como . The interior and the views are amazing!
But it’s not just the villa itself that is worth a visit, but even more – its famous botanical garden.
You can easily spend a couple of hours here and enjoy the lush gardens with a big variety of plants from all over the world. The best time to visit the villas of Lake Como is in spring, when everything is in bloom. But also in the summer and in the fall, the gardens are more than worth a visit.
Good to know: Villa Carlotta can be reached by ferry from Bellagio and the trip takes just 15 minutes.
Villa del Balbianello in Lenno is another favorite and one of the most magnificent of Lake Como villas. Due to its stunning location and well-kept gardens, it’s a popular choice by Hollywood movie directors and has been a setting of various films including several James Bond episodes and also Star Wars to mention just a few.
Villa Balbianello can be reached either on foot (20min hilly walk) or by motorboat from Lenno village.
Good to know: These two villas are located relatively close to each other. You could easily visit them both as a relaxing day trip from Bellagio. The ferry from Bellagio to Lenno takes about half an hour. On the way, it stops at a few other places, including Villa Carlotta.
LEARN MORE: How to Visit Villa del Balbianello
11. Spend a day at the beach
There are several areas where you can go for a swim near Bellagio, but the easiest and most comfortable of all is the private beach club Lido di Bellagio . It offers a small sandy beach as well as an outdoor swimming pool with the most spectacular views over the lake.
From what I see, the place is quite reasonably priced, so if you are visiting Bellagio in summer and are looking to experience Italian beach culture at its best, you may want to give this a try.
Alternatively, you can try the public beach of San Giovanni or the earlier-mentioned Punta Spartivento. Just keep in mind that this is a stone beach, so you may want to pack your water shoes if you want to go swimming here. Needless to say that outdoor swimming is not a year-round activity.
12. Visit Madonna del Ghisallo
Just a short drive into the mountains south of Bellagio, you’ll find one of Italy’s legendary cycling routes – Ghisallo Pass .
The 552m climb over the distance of 10.6 km along the hairpins of this famous hill is not just a challenge for cycling enthusiasts. Ghisallo Pass is also a popular feature of the most renowned cycling races like Giro di Lombardia, Giro d’Italia, and many others.
The views on top of the mountain are spectacular, but the scenery is not the only reason to come here. Ghisallo Pass is literally a place of pilgrimage for cyclists and supporters from all over the world.
The tiny 17th-century chapel of Madonna di Ghisallo , the patroness of cyclists, is the most unique church I’ve ever seen.
I think that shrine is a more correct word to describe it. Its interior is filled with all kinds of cycling-related artifacts: you’ll find everything from pictures, flags, and cycling trophies to cycling jerseys and even race bikes…
Just next to the church, you’ll find Ghisallo Cycling Museum (Museo del Ciclismo) . In order to preserve the significant collection of items left at Madonna di Ghisallo, part of Italy’s cycling heritage, a cycling museum was opened at this symbolic location.
The museum is kind of a natural extension to the shrine and yet very different. It’s not so much about bicycles or other objects, rather about the cycling sport and the people related to it.
Practical information: Museum is open daily from March till November (more info here ). You can get to Ghisallo Pass by car, by taxi, or take a bus (C36) from Bellagio. There’s also a popular day tour from Milan that cruises Lake Como, visits Bellagio, and also includes a visit here. It’s the only tour that I found that also includes Madona del Ghisallo.
TIP: Stop at the panoramic viewpoint in Civenna (see map ). It can be found at Parco Bellavista, close to the church, Chiesa di San Rocco.
13. Try risotto with fried perch
One of the local specialties of Lake Como is risotto with fried perch and Bellagio is a great place to try it. Leave the tourist-oriented restaurants by the waterfront and look for a really nice local restaurant, a bit off the beaten path.
I can really recommend the family-run Ristorante Bilacus which serves delicious risotto as well as a variety of other local dishes. In warmer months you can have lunch on their secluded outdoor terrace full of beautiful flowers.
14. Take a cooking class
If you want to experience local life and food in Bellagio, consider taking an Italian cooking class in Bellagio .
Most of these hands-on cooking lessons are followed by a delicious self-made lunch. Some also include several nice surprises that will make this a truly unforgettable experience in Bellagio.
There are cooking lessons that take just 1-3 hours, and you can also just opt for a wine tasting with snack pairings by a local chef ). Some other tours are a bit longer – 4-5 hours. So if you have some time to spare and are looking for something unique to do in Bellagio, it’s a really nice activity to consider.
15. Stay at a really nice hotel in Bellagio
Bellagio has plenty of choices when it comes to accommodation and despite its fame, you can find a place to stay for any budget.
However, if you want to experience what a vacation on Italian Lakes is truly about, you may want to splurge just a little. No matter where you decide to stay, get a room with a view of the lake and you’ll never want to leave!
Here you can find the best deals for Bellagio accommodation and below I list just a few of the best hotels in Bellagio. This list of the best places to stay in Bellagio is based on traveler reviews and recommendations (I read a couple of hundred of them, so that you don’t have to waste your time).
Good to know: Note that many hotels in Bellagio are only open in high season, between April and November.
These are the nicest hotels in Bellagio Italy:
- Grand Hotel Villa Serbelloni is one of the oldest and most elegant hotels of Lake Como and the only 5-star luxury hotel in Bellagio. This hotel has an amazing location by the lake and beautiful gardens that you can visit even if you’re not staying here. It’s a place loved by the rich and the famous. Rumour has it that Robert De Niro is a frequent guest here. Prices for a double room at this hotel start from 500-600 EUR/night.
- Hotel Belvedere Bellagio is located on the hill and offers incredible views over the whole area, but is within a short walk to town. It’s a really nice hotel with spacious rooms and amazing facilities like a heated swimming pool, sauna, and heated jacuzzis in some rooms. Guests recommend booking a room with a view of the lake.
- Hotel Metropole Bellagio . This recently restored 3-star hotel is the only hotel directly on Lake Como in Bellagio and is a bit more budget-friendly among the best hotels of Bellagio (double room prices starting at around 180-200 EUR per night). If you decide to stay here, you can be sure to have a room with a view since all rooms have views of the lake (some have side views). Featuring an award-winning restaurant with fantastic views of Lake Como and a private rooftop terrace, this is a popular mid-range option in Bellagio.
- Hotel Du Lac is a charming small 3-star hotel located in the lower part of Bellagio, close to the lake, the shops, and the restaurants. The location is excellent and travelers are raving about this mid-budget accommodation in Bellagio. Some of our readers and followers have repeatedly recommended this hotel as well.
- Hotel Borgo Le Terrazze is the furthest from Bellagio town center of all the hotels in my selection, but since it has such great reviews, I think it’s worth mentioning. This is a modern hotel featuring a beautiful outside pool with phenomenal views over the lake. All the rooms and self-catering apartments have amazing lake views and are much more affordable than hotels in the center. This hotel has a parking garage for your car and a free shuttle to Bellagio’s old town. Practical information and tips for visiting Bellagio at Lake Como in Italy
- Come in the shoulder season (April-May or September-October). Bellagio can get really crowded in summer and is completely deserted in winter. Best time to visit Bellagio is in autumn or in spring. You’ll find pleasant temperatures for sightseeing, lower prices, and fewer people.
- Book accommodation in advance – Bellagio is the most popular town on Lake Como. The same counts for restaurants for dinner – book a table at least a day in advance; on the weekends – even a few days in advance.
- If you are not sure how long to stay in Bellagio , consider this. You can see the town itself in just a few hours, so you can even visit Bellagio on a day trip from Milan . But if you want to experience the best of Lake Como, you should stay in Bellagio for at least 2-3 days.
- There are many ways to get to Bellagio (it’s just a 90-minute drive from Milan). One of the nicest ways is to arrive in Bellagio by boat. The easiest way to reach Bellagio from Milan is by taking a train to Varenna, followed by a short ferry ride to Bellagio.
- You don’t really need a car here – Lake Como is best explored by boat . Parking can be problematic in high season, so if you’re traveling by car, make sure that your accommodation has parking.

Fantastic information! Much appreciated!
We (2) are planning to visit Florence, Milan, Lake Como and Venice in September or October. Which arrival airport do you suggest? We are coming from the US. Is it best to take the train between cities or rent a car or fly?
Thursday 30th of November 2023
Hi Elvira, depending on where you are flying from, you can choose the best option - there are airports in all those cities. Milan is the biggest one with most international connections, then Venice, and then Florence. And yes, for traveling between cities, it's best to take a train. You can find more information about traveling around Italy at the bottom of our article with a suggested 2-week Italy itinerary. I wouldn't rent a car for the cities, only if you are planning to visit many smaller villages or nature destinations. Also places like Lake Como are best visited without a car. You may want to read our tips for visiting Lake Como as well. Good luck with the planning and once you have your itinerary set, book your accommodations asap (especially in Venice!).

Can you take a day trip from Bellagio to Milan
Thursday 18th of August 2022
Sure. The easiest way is probably to take a boat from Bellagio to Varenna and from there a train to Milan. You can find more info on what to see and do there in our guide: one day in Milan.

Hi Jurga Thank you for such a comprehensive guide. We are staying at the Grand Hotel Serbelloni in June, and can’t wait. I found you suggestion about the restaurant off the tourist track very helpful, as this kind of local knowledge is not always easy to come by. Although we will be tourists ourselves, its always nice to avoid others :-)
Sunday 23rd of January 2022
:) I know what you mean, Philip - we're all tourists, but we also long for more local experiences. Nothing wrong with that! I think it's impossible to get completely off the beaten path in a place such as Bellagio in the high season, but it sure helps to do some research and check out some of the better restaurants. I also recommend using Google Maps to see restaurant reviews instead of just eating at the first place you come across. Have a great time in Bellagio!
Sunday 16th of February 2020
This is a great guide and there's only one thing I would add. We have visited the area many times and we chose to stay up the hill a bit at a wonderful hotel called Il Perlo Panorama. This family run hotel is situated above the town, with the most amazing terrace views. It is really a joy. The only down side is arranging travel up and down the hill but the hotel will do that with prior notice. They also serve wonderful home made meals if requested in advance. Bellagio is such a very special place. Happy travels to you and your family and thanks again.

Thanks for sharing your experience, Caroline. It looks like a nice hotel indeed. I added a link to your comment in case people want to check it out. Happy travels to you too.

Home » Bellagio Como Travel Guide [What to do and Where to Stay]
Bellagio is one of the most elegant towns in Italy! Located on Lake Como, this town is known for its cobbled lanes, magnificent villas, and breathtaking views.
Bellagio is stunning, wherever you look. There is also a great deal to do here, for families and travelers of all types. Here is our travel guide for beautiful Bellagio, we hope it helps you to make the most out of your stay.
What to do in Bellagio, Italy
There are many reasons to visit this fascinating town. Here are some of our favorite things to do in Bellagio, Italy.
1. Visit the Gardens at Villa Melzi and Villa Serbelloni
These famous villas have the most incredible gardens. Take some time to explore the multiple acres of magnificent parks and gardens surrounding the properties. You’ll be amazed at the many exotic trees and plants, the lakes, and the paths around the unspoiled grounds.
This offers a peaceful escape from the buzz of the town.
2. Explore the Town Center
One of the best ways to experience Bellagio is simply by wandering around the romantic lanes and streets in the town. Walking around the town center is where you will truly feel the magic of Bellagio.
There are many amazing restaurants, cafes, wine bars and shops around here. Lake Como is a pretty luxurious destination, so why not spoil yourself with some shopping? Be aware of all the stairs, though, and bring comfortable walking shoes!
A great way to explore this town if you are here on a day trip is via a walking tour. You can book a fabulous walking tour with lunch included on Viator here.
3. Marvel at the Basilica of San Giacomo
When in Bellagio, Lake Como, the magnificent Basilica of San Giacomo is a sight that is hard to miss. The church’s bell tower rises above the town and is impressive from all angles.
This church was built between the 11th and 12th centuries, and it is well worth exploring. The interior is awe-inspiring and full of detail.
4. Explore Lake Como
While Bellagio is an amazing destination in itself, it is also the perfect base to explore Lake Como! You can find the top towns to visit in Lake Como in our post here.
Our favorite towns by far were both Bellagio and Varenna.
And of course, an afternoon trip over to Villa del Balbianello where a portion of Star Wars was shot is a great idea too.
Whilst you can easily explore the lake via the local ferries, you can also experience the lake via a wide range of boating experiences (find a list of the best Lake Como boat tours here).
Explore the lake in style by booking a Venetian-style private speedboat to zoom around the lake as you please. This experience is such fun, and it will really be a highlight of your trip.
If the speedboat is a bit too pricey for you, how about hiring your own boat for 2 hours to explore.
Book a Viator kayak tour from Bellagio here for added adventure.
5. Enjoy the Beaches
There are a number of lake beaches and beach clubs around Bellagio. These beaches are generally pebbly or grassy, but they offer some great opportunities for tanning, swimming and enjoying waterside fun!
Lido di Argegno is well equipped with sunbeds, umbrellas, a pool, and a bar. Lido di Bellagio is another popular beach club in the town.
Or if like us, you are visiting during the colder months, we can highly recommend just grabbing a gelato and enjoying the water views from Piazza Mazzini (where you will catch your ferry).
We enjoyed the atmosphere and our daughters loved watching the swans and ducks there as well. A great place to relax in the late afternoon.
Where to Eat in Bellagio
No holiday in Northern Italy is complete without indulging in the amazing food! Here are some of our favorite places to eat in Bellagio, Lake Como.
1. La Grotta
This pizzeria is tucked away on a lovely cobbled street in the town. La Grotta is one of the best places to enjoy pizza, fresh fish from the lake, and famous lasagna!
The setting here is relaxed and romantic, the wine is amazing, and the food is authentic. We had a few of our meals here, it was recommended by the locals and boy did we enjoy the food!
2. Restaurant de l’Hotel Florence
Eat here for unbeatable views over Lake Como! Take the time to enjoy a slow lunch at Restaurant de I’Hotel Florence while watching the boats go by.
The menu is traditional to the area, with a modern twist. The gnocchi, risotto, and seafood are particularly good options! There are also some great vegetarian and vegan options too.
3. Trattoria Baita Belvedere
Visit Trattoria Baita Belvedere for an unforgettable meal! The restaurant sits way up above the town, offering the most incredible views out over the lake, Bellagio, and the surrounds of its location.
If the panoramic views aren’t enough, the food here is definitely worth the trip up! Try the pasta and polenta dishes. Watch the sunset with a glass of local wine for a fantastic Como experience.

How to Get to Bellagio
Transport in Italy is efficient and easy to use! Here are three of the best ways to get you to Bellagio.
Bellagio does not have its own train station, but train travel is an easy way to reach Lake Como. In fact, it is one of the best towns near Milan and many don’t realize how easy it is to reach. You can catch a train from Milan to Varenna . From Varenna, you can reach Bellagio by a quick ferry ride.
There is an efficient and frequent ferry that operates across Lake Como. You can take it to Bellagio from anywhere along the lake, including Como, Lecco, Lenno, Varenna, or any other destination.
Rent a car in Milan (or you could rent a car in Como ) and drive there. The drive from Milan is a great way to see more of the country and it is a beautiful drive (although slightly scary with blind bends and narrow roads).
There is also a ferry on Lake Como that can take cars, so no need to worry about moving between the different towns. Find cheap car rentals for Italy here .
And lastly, if you prefer to sit back and simply soak up the views, you can also book a private transfer from Malpensa Airport (MXP) to Bellagio (or vice versa) here .
Visiting Lake Como from Milan is easy with one of the many Milan to Lake Como tours available.
Depending on the type of tour you choose, they can last between four and seven hours, giving you plenty of time to explore the stunning surroundings and take in all that Lake Como has to offer.
Many tours offer a combination of coach travel and boat trips.

next time you’ll be in Milan, don’t miss also Lake Maggiore, not so far from Malpensa Airport, as beautiful as lake Como, but less crowded!
Awesome, will add it to the list of what to see next time 🙂

How to Experience the Best of Bellagio in 24 Hours
Bellagio, Italy
The Pearl of Lake Como is perhaps the most famous town in Lake Como . When we were planning our visit, I thought it was funny that despite the lake being named after the town of Como, most people skip that stop altogether and head straight for Bellagio or Varenna .
Bellagio is the prefect town in Italy if you’re looking to getaway and relax. While there are lots of other tourists, the tiny town retains a really charming atmosphere and I loved how there wasn’t any hurry to cross off any big ‘to do’ list of museums and famous sights. Instead, we spent our time window browsing, watching street performers and carbo loading!
Here’s a quick travel guide about what to see and do in Bellagio, Italy – even if you have just 1 day!

From Milan to Bellagio
It’s relatively straight forward to get to Bellagio if you’re already in Italy. First, take the train from Milan’s Central Station to Varenna.
We purchased our train tickets online before our trip and the process was easy and straightforward. You can browse their website for the Italy train schedule here . Tip: In Italy, train fares increase with time, so book your tickets once you know your travel dates.
Taking the Ferry
When you arrive in Varenna, you’ll then need to take the ferry. The train station in Varenna is a short walk (maybe 5 to 10 minutes) from the ferry dock.
While there are lots of towns in Lake Como to base yourself in , Bellagio is one of the most convenient since the ferry boats which service Lake Como typically make a brief stop at Bellagio on most routes in either direction. You’ll receive a time table when you buy your ferry ticket.
As we rode the ferry over from Varenna, the slow pace only heightened our anticipation. First we spotted a church tower and colorful pastels from far away and as we inched closer and closer, our jaws dropped. Bellagio is one of the larger villages on Lake Como, with tiered hills of pastel buildings.
When you land, there are two docks, each separated by just a couple hundred yards. Right opposite is a large promenade of hotels, restaurants and shops. There’s also people everywhere!
Where to Stay in Bellagio, Italy
Bellagio has lots of options for those who want to spend a weekend or relaxing couple days on Lake Como. There’s luxury grand hotels right on the waterfront, boutique hotels for those wanting a more family feel with modern accommodation, and of course, Airbnb .
Here are some of the best hotels in Bellagio:
1 | Hotel Belvedere Bellagio – Perched high on a hill, Hotel Belvedere is a landmark Bellagio hotel that's famous for its incredible pool, rooftop restaurant and stunning views of greater Lake Como. The rooms are large and airy and you're pretty much guaranteed to never want to leave!

Things to Do in Bellagio, Italy
1. shop till you drop.
We had fun exploring the side streets and walkways. There’s everything from jewelry stores and hat stands to luxury designer boutiques. Shopping is the main thing to do in Bellagio so join in on the fun!
2. Eat, Eat & Eat!
Bellagio has lots of great options, whether you’re craving pasta, pizza or tiramisu!
We used Rick Steves Italy guide to get a sense of some local hotspots and ended up picking a restaurant with AC to escape the heat! Our lunch was pasta heavy (carbonara and clams) and delicious. Expect slightly higher prices given the town caters to tourists.
3. Visit i Giardini di Villa Melzi
Villa Melzi is a fabulous villa that was built… for Napoleon’s assistant. Must have been one right hand guy! The manicured growns are gorgeous and as a bonus, have incredible views of the lake! It’s only a short walk from the main town but pretty unknown… unless you take the Hidden Bellagio tour .
4. Take a Cooking Class
If you have more time, this 4 hour cooking experience is fantastic. You get to learn all the secrets to making authentic Italian cuisine in a pretty villa. They pick you up from the ferry bank, teach you lots of Italian dishes and appetizers and best of all, it’s capped to just 12 people so the cooking class is more intimate and everyone has more than enough to eat at the end!
Learn more here .
5. Go Kayaking
We didn’t have time for this but kayaking on Lake Como looked so fun! Starting from Bellagio, you paddle all along Pescallo Pay and learn from a local guide about the region and hidden sites of Lake Como.
If you have a waterproof camera or GoPro , bring it! Kayaking brings you around the hills so you get some amazing views of the landscape and villas (Serbelloni, Marescalchi, etc) from the water.

Visiting Italy – Trip Planning Checklist
There's so much to see and do in Italy that you can visit again and again and still discover new sights. I recommend concentrating on the big 4 cities (Rome, Venice, Milan & Florence) if it's your first time and then coming back to explore either Northern Italy or Southern Italy in more depth.
Go | Flight prices from the US to Italy are highly seasonal. You can set a fare alert here to be notified of discounts. Every fall & winter, I've seen great deals to Milan. One word of caution: avoid Alitalia at all costs!
Getting Around | A convenient way to explore Italy is via high speed train . You can search train schedules and book online here . Buy your tickets in advance to save on fares. Make sure to validate your ticket on the platform!
It also helps to speak a little Italian. Brush up on your Italian language skills with Rosetta Stone . You can take 10% off with promo code CJBT10 .
Stay | Book hotels in advance to save, or check here for last minute deals . Many hotels in Italy are older so don't be surprised if even 5 star accommodation feels slightly dated. Opt for a room with a view instead of breakfast, as Italians don't eat breakfast in the same way Americans do and you'll probably be disappointed with their offering.
Alternatively, groups or budget travelers can check out Airbnb .
Protect | Lastly, be sure to visit Italy with travel insurance . Whether you get injured and need to be hospitalized, your phone gets stolen, or a flight delay leaves you with nothing but the clothes on your back, travel insurance will help when you need it most.

Formula 1 Racing Is One of the Most Exciting Sports to Travel for — Here's the 2024 Lineup
With three big races in the U.S. and many more abroad, this is the year to plan a trip around F1.
Alex Bierens de Haan/Getty Images for Heineken
As the global phenomenon of “sports tourism” continues to surge, 2024 promises to be a year full of opportunities to create unforgettable travel memories, from the Olympic Games in Paris to the European Football Championships in Germany. There are plenty of reasons to plan a trip around a major sporting event and, for me, Formula One offers a special opportunity to explore a city at a time when you will find a truly unique atmosphere.
Unlike traveling for a one-off sports game, F1 is built around a weekend of action where you can truly feel the excitement and anticipation build as the weekend progresses from practice to qualifying, and then, of course, to race day itself. With 24 incredible race locations set in highly diverse cities, no two F1 races share the same backdrop — from deserts to lakes and from mountains to marinas, the F1 2024 calendar is packed with iconic race tracks.
For those looking for an excuse to finally book that overseas trip of a lifetime, F1 offers multiple race destinations across Europe, the Middle East, Asia. and South America; there really is something for everyone.
For those looking to stay closer to home, following the hugely successful 2023 Las Vegas Strip debut, the 2024 F1 calendar will once again showcase more races on U.S. soil than any other country. I attended last year's Vegas race weekend , and MGM Resorts International just announced my favorite place to watch is returning for year two: the Bellagio Fountain Club, offering unobstructed views of the Winner's Stage and the Strip, indoor and outdoor entertainment areas, open bars, and unlimited food by top chefs that will include Mario Carbone, David Chang, Jean-Georges Vongerichten, and more in 2024. ( Tickets just went on sale .) Joining Sin City to complete the U.S. lineup this year are Miami and Austin.
When attending races within driving distance, I recommend taking it to the next level and supercharging your race weekend journey by renting a luxury sports car from your favorite F1 manufacturer. Why not arrive in style?
Below, find the F1 grand prix lineup for the rest of 2024, and start planning your trip.

Here and is it simple enough to get from here to Ferry terminal to Bellagio?
3 replies to this topic
Piazzale San Gotthardo is at Como San Giovanni train station, not the train station which is normally advised for travel from Malpensa (Como Lago, with connections every 30 minutes from Malpensa), as it's some way from the centre and the ferry landing. There are also currently road improvement works between Como San Giovanni and the centre, so the buses to Bellagio are currently not serving San Giovanni.
My guess is that with luggage it'll be a 10 to 15 minute walk into the centre for the ferry landing. Or there will be taxis in front of the train station.
As #1, the train from Malpensa to Como Lago station would put you closer to the ferry to go onward across the lake.
I am curious: what bus company is that?
