Matej Mohorič (Bahrain Victorious) won the fifth and final stage of the  Renewi Tour  in a final kilometre attack from a fractured peloton, beating Matteo Trentin (UAE Team Emirates) to second place and Søren Kragh Andersen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) to third. Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) claimed the overall title. With under 90km to go, Wellens coordinated a rider protest about the small and dangerous roads being used in the finale, and racing was suspended until organisers consented that the general classification times would be taken before the final 5km, and there would be no overall time bonuses on the finish.

Stage 4: Sam Welsford wins photo finish on stage 4

Sam Welsford (Team dsm-firmenich) won a photo finish on stage 4 at the Renewi Tour on Saturday. Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma) finished second and Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) third, leaving Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) off the podium in fourth. Tim Wellens (UAE Team Emirates) avoided the chaos of late crashes to maintain his overall lead.

Stage 3: Late attack nets Mike Teunissen stage 3 victory

Mike Teunissen made a late-race attack that netted him the stage 3 win at Renewi Tour. Tim Wellens, who finished second on the day, moved into the blue leader's jersey.

Stage 2: Josh Tarling wins stage 2 time trial and moves into GC lead

Ineos Grenadiers' Josh Tarling , 19, covered stage 2's 13.6km time trial course with a winning time of 15:05 and an average speed of 54 kph, to take his first WorldTour victory and the overall race lead.

Stage 1: Jasper Philipsen takes commanding win on stage 1

Jasper Philipsen (Alpecin-Deceuninck) won the opening stage of the Renewi Tour  in Ardooie. The Belgian delivered a powerful effort to claim the spoils ahead of Tim Merlier (Soudal-QuickStep) and Olav Kooij (Jumbo-Visma).

The Renewi Tour, most recently staged as the Benelux Tour, returns to the calendar after cancellation in 2022, with new dates and a new title sponsor. The 2023 event covers five days of racing, taking place Wednesday, August 23 to Sunday, August 27.

Now the Renewi Tour, the WorldTour stage race, began in 2005 as the Eneco Tour and later changed to the BinckBank Tour. It became part of the ProTour in 2005, as a reorganised effort to continue a long-standing Tour of the Netherlands stage race. The event was due to take place in the Netherlands and Belgium last year in early September across seven days, but organiser Golazo did not go forward citing a clash with other races, including the Vuelta a España. 

Sonny Colbrelli (Bahrain Victorious) won the last edition of the Renewi Tour in 2021. He was joined on the overall podium by teammate Matej Mohoric, who was second overall.

The first stage of this year’s race will take place in West Flanders for a road stage between Blankenberge to Ardooie. An individual time trial will then unfold in Sluis, Netherlands. Back to Belgium, the final three road stages will cover territory inland with an overall finish in Bilzen.

Renewi Tour 2023 Parcours etappe 4: Beringen – Peer

Na een openingsronde van 20 kilometer trekken de coureurs via wat omtrekkende bewegingen naar Peer. Daar snijden ze een circuit aan van 18,2 kilometer. Dat leggen ze viermaal in zijn geheel af en vervolgens is het zo goed als zeker een kwestie van sprinten om de winst.

Zowel Beringen als Peer zijn nog maagdelijk als we het hebben over de start en finish van de Renewi Tour en zijn voorlopers. De plaatsen liggen op ongeveer 25 kilometer afstand van elkaar. Ook de Nederlandse grens is niet ver.

De ‘Groene Kilometer’ begint op 14,7 kilometer van de finish. Binnen 1 kilometer zijn er dan driemaal 3, 2 en 1 bonificatieseconden te winnen met tussensprints. Aan de meet verdienen de eerste drie renners 10, 6 en 4 seconden.

Benelux Tour becomes Renewi Tour

The Benelux Tour has a new main sponsor and that also results in a new name. The only WorldTour stage race in the Benelux will now be known as the Renewi Tour . Renewi is a waste processor and recycling company based in Netherlands. The race will take place from August 23 to August 27.

“Under the impulse of the new title partner Renewi, the five-day cycling race will become an exemplary event in the field of sustainability,” the organization writes on social media.

In 2022, the Benelux Tour could not take place due to logistical problems and media difficulties. The last edition of the Benelux Tour therefore took place in 2021, when Sonny Colbrelli took the win. Incidentally, that is the only time that the race has been held under the name 'Benelux Tour'. From 2017 to 2020, the stage race was called the BinckBank Tour, before that the Eneco Tour.

Benelux Tour 2023 : Etappen, Profile, Favoriten, TV-Übertragung & Live-Stream

Lange Jahre umfasste das Rennen, das 2005 erstmals ausgetragen wurde, sieben Etappen. In diesem Jahr sind es aber nur noch fünf. 2022 wurde das Rennen abgesagt. Dabei genießt die Rundfahrt World-Tour-Status. Ein überfüllter Rennkalender und die fehlende Zusage der niederländischen Polizei, die aus verkehrssicherheitstechnischen Gründen notwendige Motorradstaffel abzustellen, wurden von offizieller Seite als Begründung für diesen Schritt abgegeben.

Zwei Deutsche konnten sich bisher in die Siegerliste eintragen: Stefan Schumacher (2006) und Tony Martin (2010). Rekordsieger mit jeweils zwei Erfolgen sind Jose Ivan Gutierrez 2007, 2008), Edvald Boasson Hagen (2009, 2011) und Tim Wellens (2014, 2015).

Die Favoriten der Benelux Tour

Letzterer könnte wie sein Teamkollege Matteo Trentin ( UAE Team Emirates ) auch in diesem Jahr wieder vorne mitfahren. In Matej Mohoric ( Bahrain-Victorious ), der 2018 gewonnen hat, ist ein weiterer Kandidat für den Gesamtsieg auszumachen. Aber auch Alberto Bettiol ( EF Education EasyPost ), Kasper Asgreen ( Soudal - Quick Step ), Jasper Stuyen, Thibau Nys ( Lidl-Trek ) oder Victor Campenaerts (Lotto-Dstny) stehen auf der Startliste und bringen Siegpotenzial mit.

Die Liste der Sprinter, die um Tagessiege auf den Flachetappen kämpfen, ist ebenso lang. Angeführt wird sie vom vierfachen Tour-de-France-Etappensieger Jasper Philipsen ( Alpecin-Deceuninck ). Mit Jordi Meeus ( Bora-Hansgrohe ) gesellt sich der Sieger der Etappe auf den Champs-Elysees dazu, Tim Merlier ( Soudal - Quick Step ) zweifacher Tagessieger zuletzt bei der Polen-Rundfahrt und Arnaud De Lie (Lotto-Dstny) ergänzen die Liste der belgischen Topsprinter. Die beiden Niederländer Olav Kooij ( Jumbo-Visma ) und Dylan Groenewegen ( Team Jayco-AlUla ) wollen ebenfalls ein Wörtchen mitreden. Für Überraschungen gut sind auch Cees Bol ( Astana Qazaqstan Team ) und Sam Welsford ( Team DSM ).

Das ist die Strecke der Benelux Tour 2023 - alle Etappen im Überblick

Die Strecke umfasst insgesamt knapp 735 Kilometer. Allerdings ist es in diesem Jahr nahezu nur eine Be Tour. Denn abgesehen vom Einzelzeitfahren in den Niederlanden, das ebenfalls grenznah ausgetragen wird, führt die Rundfahrt nur durch Belgien.

1. Etappe | Mittwoch, 23. August | Blankenberge - Ardooie | 182,9 Kilometer

An der belgischen Nordseeküste in Blankenberge beginnt die Benelux Tour 2023. Nachdem die ersten 60 Kilometer komplett flach sind und auch kaum das Niveau knapp über dem Meeresspiegel verlassen, wird es anschließend leicht wellig. Die vielen kleinen Zacken im Profil sollten trotzdem keinen Massensprint verhindern können, zumal die Liste der Sprinter, die ihre Teams etwaige Lücken schließen lassen werden, lang ist.

2. Etappe | Donnerstag, 24. August | Sluis - Sluis | 13,6 Kilometer (Einzelzeitfahren)

Im niederländischen Sluis, unmittelbar an der Grenze zu Belgien, kämpfen die Anwärter auf den Gesamtsieg um Sekunden. Da das Profil tellerflach ist und der Kurs auch nur 13,6 Kilometer lang ist, wird es eng zugehen. Wer hier eine halbe Minute oder mehr verliert, dürfte alle Siegchancen eingebüßt haben.

Allen voran wird der 19-jährige Youngster Joshua Tarling ( Ineos Grenadiers ) hier beweisen wollen, dass seine Bronzemedaille im WM-Zeitfahren der Elite kürzlich in Glasgow erst der Anfang war. Mit Vorjahres-Weltmeister Tobias Foss ( Jumbo-Visma ), Asgreen oder Yves Lampaert ( Soudal - Quick Step ), Prolog-Sieger bei der Tour 2022, sind aber durchaus Konkurrenten am Start, die gegenhalten können.

3. Etappe | Freitag, 25. August | Aalter - Geraardsbergen | 171,2 Kilometer

Zurück in Belgien startet die 3. Etappe in Aalter, westlich von Gent. Nachdem die ersten 70 Kilometer wieder flach sind, wird es danach spannend. Und steil. Denn das Ziel der Etappe liegt in Geraadsbergen. Und wo sollte dort eine Etappe enden, wenn nicht an der ikonischen Muur? 475 Meter lang, bis zu 20 Prozent steil, im Schnitt etwa die Hälfte. Dreimal muss die Muur an diesem Tag insgesamt bewältigt werden. Dazu kommen weitere namhafte Anstiege wie der Leberg oder der Bosberg, die auch bei der Flandern-Rundfahrt gefahren werden.

4. Etappe | Samstag, 26. August | Beringen - Peer | 179,4 Kilometer

Nach dem Tag in Flandern verlegt die Tour in die Region Limburg in den Osten Belgien. Gestartet wird in Beringen, das Ziel liegt in Peer. Etwa die Hälfte des Tages verbringen die Fahrer auf einem Rundkurs, der viereinhalbmal zu absolvieren ist. Nur 420 Höhenmeter werden auf den knapp 180 Kilometern absolviert, deswegen sollten erneut die Sprinter zum Zug kommen.

5. Etappe | Sonntag, 27. August | Riemst - Bilzen | 187,3 Kilometer

Zwischen Riemst und Bilzen fällt die Entscheidung über den Gesamtsieg. Die Benelux Tour bleibt in der Region Limburg, macht aber dabei immer wieder kleine Abstecher Richtung Lüttich. Auf immer wieder leicht voneinander abweichenden Runden wird der ganze Tag absolviert, der Zielstrich in Bilzen dreimal passiert, bevor es am Ende wirklich zählt. Von Kilometer 0 an geht nur hoch und runter, gut 2000 Höhenmeter stehen auf dem Programm.

Benelux Tour 2023 TV-Übertragung und Live-Stream

Die Benelux Tour 2023 wird auf Eurosport 1 im TV übertragen. Die 1. Etappe zeigt der Sender live ab 15 Uhr. Etappe 2 und 3 sind ab 15:15 Uhr live zu sehen, die 4. Etappe ab 16:15 Uhr. Von der 5. Etappe gibt es ab 18 Uhr lediglich eine einstündige Zusammenfassung.

Discovery+ und Eurosport bieten dazu täglich einen Live-Stream an. Von den ersten vier Etappen wird von 15 bis 17:30 Uhr übertragen, die letzte Etappe von 13:30 bis 16 Uhr.

Benelux Tour 2023: route en etappes op een rij

Na alle wielerwedstrijden uit het buitenland is het eindelijk weer tijd voor een koers in ons kleine kikkerlandje. Net voordat de Vuelta a España losbarst in het altijd zonnige Spanje, staat vanaf vandaag (woensdag 23 augustus) tot en met zondag 27 augustus de Benelux Tour 2023 op de wielerkalender . Het toernooi maakt sinds 2011 deel uit van de UCI World Tour en wordt dwars door België en Nederland verreden. Maar wat weten we tot nu toe allemaal van deze meerdaagse koers? Van de route tot aan alle etappes in een overzichtelijk schema: in dit artikel zetten we alles voor je op een rij. De race zal dit jaar onder andere te volgen zijn via Eurosport en  discovery+ .

Wat is de Benelux Tour?

De Benelux Tour is een koers die, zoals de naam al verklapt, deels door België en uiteraard Nederland wordt verreden. Het toernooi staat bekend als de opvolger van de BinckBank Tour, de Eneco Tour en de Ronde van Nederland. In eerste instantie werd de wedstrijd namelijk uitsluitend in ons koude kikkerlandje verreden. Het toernooi kon in deze hoedanigheid helaas niet aan de UCI ProTour toegevoegd worden, waardoor er besloten werd om een wielerronde door de Benelux in het leven te roepen. Hoewel de koers internationaal bekend staat onder deze naam, is de wedstrijden nog nooit in Luxemburg verreden.

Het toernooi behoort sinds 2011 tot de UCI World Tour en is daarmee een van de jongste races op de kalender. Door de jaren is de naam van de tour vaak veranderd. Route van de Benelux Tour in 2023

Naast de naamswijziging ondergaat de koers nog meer veranderingen . Door wijzigingen op de UCI-kalender is de lengte van de wedstrijd bijvoorbeeld aangepast. Het toernooi duurt nu vijf dagen, in plaats van de oorspronkelijke zeven die op de planning stonden. Ook fietsen de renners slechts één etappe door Nederland. Dit zou te maken hebben met afspraken tussen een aantal Belgische steden en met beperkingen van de politiebegeleiding tijdens wielerwedstrijden in ons land. Volgend jaar hoopt de organisatie de koers weer langer door Holland te laten rijden.

De tour start op dinsdag 22 augustus met de ploegenpresentatie in de Belgische kustplaats Knokke-Heist. De renners trappen de vijfdaagse tocht af in Blankenberge en vervolgen hun weg naar de finish in Ardooie. De koers staat bekend om zijn afwisselende ritten, waardoor de pedaleurs ook ditmaal weer heuvels, kasseien en verraderlijke vlakke stukken voor de kiezen krijgen. Op dag twee staat de individuele tijdrit door het Nederlandse Sluis op de planning. De planning is dat de pedaleurs in vijf uur de eindstreep bereiken.

Na het enige Nederlandse onderonsje raast het peloton verder over de Belgische wegen. Op dag drie ligt de heuvelachtige etappe van Aalter naar Geraardsbergen in het verschiet. Na deze hoogteverschillen moeten de renners zich voorbereiden op de volgende rit van Beringen naar Peer. Op de laatste dag van het parcours rijden de profs van Riemst naar de finishlijn in Bilzen. Daar wordt duidelijk wie de eindzege binnen fietst en de opvolger wordt van voormalig pedaleur Sonny Colbrelli. De Italiaan wist de vorige editie uit 2021 te winnen.
