Ham and jam and Spamalot! Monty Python's Spamalot is the spectacularly silly on stage musical adaptation of  the 1975 comedy classic Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Like the film, Spamalot is a whimsical romp through King Arthur's quest to find the Holy Grail. The audience watch as Arthur and his knights of the round table (or band of misfits!) search high and low for the ultimate relic, coming across the bold but bloody black night, some knights who say "Nee", the beautiful but feisty Lady of the Lake and one truly terrifying bunny rabbit! Spamalot includes original songs "Find your Grail," "He's Not Dead Yet" and of course the ultimate Monty Python classic, "Always Look on the Bright Side of Life." A comedy must for all fans of something silly!

What the audience said…

My husband and two daughters aged 20 and 18 came with me to London on a very short trip for business and leisure but we fitted in a visit to see Spamalot.  Thank you for the best laugh out loud evening we have spent in many a long month.  The whole cast was amazing and Joe and lovely Bonnie were a joy, I had forgotten what a fantastic voice Bonnie has, I did see her in Cats too many years ago to remember. Everyone's boundless energy and gusto left us all with spirits uplifted and singing "Always look on the bright side of life" walking to the tube.....oh well we are a little eccentric on the Isle of Man....

Went to see this tonight and it's the best show I've ever seen! Absolutely brilliant cast and funny throughout. Would recommend Spamalot to anyone who will listen

Went to the matinee yesterday, Sat 30 Nov, when - at very short notice - Joe Pasquale had to leave his Panto rehearsals and step in to take the role of King Arthur. What a show. Such a good cast. Lots of fun and laughs with many memorable moments. And hats off to Joe P. for such a brilliant, faultless, professional and funny performance. A gentleman and a star. No wonder we stood and gave him a standing ovation. He should be proud.

What a great night we had last night ,such terrific performances from all the cast. Les was amazing and as for Bonnie she was quite fantastic, congratulations all round. Thank you. x

Was my sons 21st Birthday on the 15th when we went to see it. a great production and the actors were superb. However anyone expecting a big London show will be disappointed. its set in a pantomime and certainly not worth the £50 a ticket we paid for the privilege.

I went to see Spamalot on a hen night and we all laughed so hard because the show was so funny! Naughty but nice!

This show is good but doesn't exactly have much meat on it's bones. The plot and the songs aren't exactly deep but it was a bit of fun.

What a jolly show! This show was rather like a naughty pantomime, it was certainly all fun and frolics. As a man of a certain age, I remember Monty Python from my youth which made the experience even better! The show was 2 hours long which I think was the perfect length. Hilarious, pacey and racy!

Saw the matinee performance on 9th of March 2013. I have previously seen this show a number of times, (twice at the Palace Theatre, once when the tour show hit Bromley, and now twice at the Playhouse. Until yesterday I thought the best "king" was Tim Curry but he has been deposed. Today's performance was the best yet! Totally hilarious and some of the current references were killers. Sides are still aching.

For side-splitting laughs, tonnes of nostalgia and toe-tapping songs, look no further than Spamalot tickets

Spamalot is the Monty Python musical that has been “lovingly ripped off” from the acclaimed 1975 film, Monty Python and the Holy Grail. The original Broadway production of Spamalot won three Tony Awards including the awards for Best Musical and Best Direction of a Musical. Spamalot also won a Grammy Award in 2006 for Best Musical Show Album.

Following a successful West End debut in 2006 at the Palace Theatre, the show returns to London for another cheeky romp through Camelot at the Playhouse Theatre .

The plot of Spamalot is almost exactly the same as the Holy Grail; King Arthur along with his squire, Patsy and a selection of knights go on an epic quest to find the Holy Grail. The quest lead the troupe to a French castle, into the dangerous clutches of the Black Knight and a loathsome bunny rabbit, to a rendezvous with the knights that say knee, and into an intimate liaison with the Lady of the Lake.

Unlike the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, Spamalot is jam packed with silly songs to match the action. The opening number “Finland”/ “Fisch Schlapping Dance” was created especially for the show along with other original songs such as “I Am Not Dead Yet,” “The Song that Goes Like This,” and “The Diva’s Lament (Whatever Happened to My Part.” The show also includes the song originally made famous by Monty Python in The Life of Brian, “Always Look in the Bright Side of Life” which is always a crowd pleaser!

Spamalot is all singing, all dancing silliness; it is rather like an adult pantomime! The show pokes fun at theatre whilst revelling in the gaiety of live performance.

Child Friendly

Spamalot has some cheeky, sexual humour, course language and some pretty gruesome scenes of Medieval battle and is therefore not appropriate for younger children. Spamalot is not recommended for children under the age of 12.

The Magic Of Spamalot

Monty Python’s Spamalot is a parody of the film Monty Python and the Holy Grail, which is a parody of the legend of King Arthur and his quest for the grail. But the parodies don’t stop there. This tongue-in-cheek musical parodies not only the Arthurian legend but also the conventions of Broadway musicals.

The Magic of Spamalot lies in its ability to seamlessly blend the humor of Monty Python with the grandeur and spectacle of a Broadway show. It takes the traditional elements of a musical and turns them on their head, mocking the predictable formulas and cliches that often accompany these productions.

From catchy songs and elaborate dance numbers to over-the-top characters and outrageous comedic moments, Spamalot entertains audiences by subverting their expectations and embracing a more irreverent and self-aware style of storytelling.

The outrageous, uproarious, and gloriously entertaining story of King Arthur and the Lady of the Lake will delight audiences as they search for the Holy Grail and “always look on the bright side of life.”

Sir Robin and his Minstrels explain how to succeed on Broadway in the Phoenix Theatre production of SPAMALOT

Spamalot school edition

The play begins with a historian giving a brief overview of medieval England. An idyllic Scandinavian village appears, with gaily dressed Finnish villagers singing and dancing to the “Fisch Schlapping Song.” The Historian returns, irritated, and tells them he said “England”, not Finland. The villagers disperse and the pastoral forest is immediately replaced by a dreary, dark village with penitent monks in hooded robes chanting Latin prayers and hitting themselves in the face with wooden boards. King Arthur travels the land with his servant Patsy (“King Arthur’s Song”), trying to recruit Knights of the Round Table to join him in Camelot and his quest for the Holy Grail. He encounters various strange people, including a pair of sentries who are more interested in debating whether two swallows could successfully carry a coconut than in guarding their castles. Sir Robin and Sir Lancelot meet as they attempt to dispose of the sickly Not Dead Fred (“He Is Not Dead Yet”). They agree to become Knights of the Round Table together. Meanwhile, Arthur attempts to convince a peasant named Dennis Galahad that he (Arthur) is king of England because the Lady of the Lake gave him Excalibur, the sword given only to the man fit to rule England. However, Dennis and his mother, Mrs. Galahad, are political radicals and deny that any king who has not been elected by the people has any legitimate right to rule over them. To settle the issue, Arthur has the Lady of the Lake and her Laker Girls appear to turn Dennis into a knight (“Come With Me”). Cheered on by the girls (“Laker Girls Cheer”), the Lady of the Lake turns Dennis into Sir Galahad and together, they sing a generic Broadway love song (“The Song That Goes Like This”). Together, with Sir Bedevere and Sir Not-Appearing-In-This-Show (a knight resembling Don Quixote who promptly apologizes and then leaves), they make up the Knights of the Round Table (“All for One”). The five knights gather in Camelot, a deliberately anachronistic place resembling Las Vegas’s Camelot-inspired Excalibur resort, complete with showgirls and oversized dice (“Knights of the Round Table” / “The Song That Goes Like This (Reprise)”). In the midst of their revelry, they are contacted by God (voiced by John Cleese) who tells them to locate the Holy Grail. Urged on by the Lady of the Lake (“Find Your Grail”), the Knights set off. They are viciously taunted by lewd French soldiers at a castle they come to, and attempt to retaliate by sending them a large wooden rabbit in the style of the Trojan Horse; however, they realize after the fact that it was not as simple as leaving the rabbit and walking away – they were supposed to be inside of it. Defeated, they leave in a hurry when the French begin throwing various barnyard animals – including cows – at them (“Run Away”).

Sir Robin and his minstrels follow King Arthur and Patsy into a “dark and very expensive forest” where they are separated. King Arthur meets the Knights who say Ni, who demand a shrubbery. King Arthur despairs of finding one, but Patsy cheers him up (“Always Look on the Bright Side of Life”) and they find a shrubbery shortly after. The Knights accept it, but next demand that King Arthur put on a musical and bring it to Broadway. The Black Knight appears but King Arthur more or less defeats him by cutting off both his arms and legs, impaling his still-alive torso on a door, and leaving to find Sir Robin. Sir Robin, after wandering the forest for some time (“Brave Sir Robin”), finds King Arthur and insists that it would be impossible for them to accomplish this next task (“You Won’t Succeed on Broadway”). King Arthur and Patsy promptly set off in search of Jews. While the Lady of the Lake laments her lack of stage time (“The Diva’s Lament”), Sir Lancelot receives a letter from what he assumes is a young damsel in distress. He is a little surprised to find that the damsel is actually an effeminate young man named Herbert (“Where Are You?” / “Here Are You”) whose overbearing, music-hating father, the king, is forcing him into an arranged marriage. Lancelot advocates for Herbert after the king returns, and Lancelot is outed as a homosexual in the process (“His Name Is Lancelot”). King Arthur begins to give up hope of ever putting on the Broadway musical and laments that he is alone, even though Patsy has been with him the entire time (“I’m All Alone”). The Lady of the Lake appears and tells Arthur that he and the Knights have been in a Broadway musical all along. All that’s left is for King Arthur to find the Grail and marry someone. After picking up on some not-too-subtle hints, Arthur decides to marry the Lady of the Lake after he finds the Grail (“Twice In Every Show”). Reunited with his Knights, Arthur meets Tim the Enchanter who warns them of the danger of an evil rabbit. When the rabbit bites a knight’s head off, Arthur uses the Holy Hand Grenade of Antioch against it, knocking down a nearby hill and revealing that the “evil rabbit” was actually a puppet controlled by a surprised puppeteer. A large stone block showing a combination of letters and numbers is also revealed. After pondering the final clue, Arthur admits that they’re “a bit stumped with the clue thing” and asks God to “give them a hand”. The grail is “found”; Arthur marries the Lady of the Lake (who reveals that her name is Guinevere); Lancelot marries Herbert; and Sir Robin decides to pursue a career in musical theatre (“Act 2 Finale/ Always Look on the Bright Side of Life (Company Bow)”).

Monty Python’s SPAMALOT

Book & Lyrics by ERIC IDLE Music by JOHN DU PREZ & ERIC IDLE

A new musical lovingly ripped off from the motion picture “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” From the original screenplay by Graham Chapman, John Cleese, Terry Gilliam, Eric Idle, Terry Jones, Michael Palin

Original Broadway Production produced by Boyett Ostar Productions,The Shubert Organization, Arielle Tepper Madover, Stephanie McClelland/Lawrence Horowitz, Elan V McAllister/Allan S. Gordon, Independent Presenters Network, Roy Furman, GRS Associates, Jam Theatricals, TGA Entertainment, and Clear Channel Entertainment

1 female and 6 male featured roles. Many casting opportunities for female roles in the ensemble.

Following is the Broadway doubling scenario. Scroll down to see great casting tips to create more female roles and more ensemble roles.

KING ARTHUR (Late 30s-60s.): The King of England who sets out on a quest to form the Knights of the Roundtable and find the Holy Grail. Great Humor. Good singer.

SIR ROBIN (30s-40s): A Knight of the Roundtable. Ironically called ‘Sir Robin the Brave,’ though he couldn’t be more cowardly. Joins the Knights for the singing and dancing. Also plays GUARD 1 and BROTHER MAYNARD, a long-winded monk.

SIR LANCELOT (30s-40): A Knight of the Roundtable. He is fearless to a bloody fault but through a twist of fate, does discover his ‘softer side.’ This actor MUST be great with character voices and accents, as he also plays THE FRENCH TAUNTER, an arrogant, condescending, over-the-top Frenchman, the KNIGHT OF NI, an absurd, cartoonish leader of a peculiar group of Knights, and TIM THE ENCHANTER, a ghostly being with a Scottish accent.

PATSY (30s-40s): King Arthur’s horse and servant. Underappreciated but always longing for King Arthur’s approval. Good, funny, physical mover with some tap dancing. Also plays MAYOR, a jolly red-faced man who advertises the merits of his home town and the drunken, useless GUARD 2.

SIR GALAHAD (30s): A Knight of the Roundtable. Begins as Dennis, a lower class ‘mud gatherer’ who becomes Knighted and transforms into the dashing Sir Galahad. Also plays PRINCE HERBERT’S FATHER, a wealthy, brutish Yorkshireman man at odds with his sensitive son, THE BLACK KNIGHT who is always ready to duel despite multiple injuries. Strong bari-tenor singing required.

SIR BEDEVERE (20s-40s): A Knight of the Roundtable. An inept scholar. Also plays DENNIS GALAHAD’S MOTHER, a shrill peasant woman, and CONCORDE, Sir Lancelot’s horse. No solo singing.

THE LADY OF THE LAKE (20s-30s):A Diva. Strong, beautiful, possesses mystical powers. The leading lady of the show. Great singing voice is essential, as she must be able to sing effortlessly in many styles and vocal registers. Especially seeking actresses of all races for this role.

THE FOLLOWING ROLES ARE PLAYED BY THE SAME ACTOR (20s-30s): Tenor singing required. Very good mover. HISTORIAN: A tweedy academic. NOT DEAD FRED: A sickly little fellow who, despite others’ beliefs, claims he is “not yet dead.” FRENCH GUARD: The condemnatory French sidekick to the French Taunter. MINSTREL: In Sir Robin’s band. PRINCE HERBERT: The hopeful and frilly prince who loves to sing and pines for his love atop a tower.

SIR NOT APPEARING may double as THE DANCING MONK

A MALE DANCER appears as THE DANCING NUN

THE VOICE OF GOD may be pre-recorded.

TWO FRENCH GUARDS are two of the MALE ENSEMBLE

ROBIN’S MINSTRELS are also ENSEMBLE: 2 MEN, 1 WOMAN.

SIR BORS is MALE ENSEMBLE.

ENSEMBLE: Six men and six women

ALL HAIL SPAMALOT!

Peter Marks of The Washington Post exclaims it’s “gloriously hilarious! The jokes crackle, and the production numbers sparkle. SPAMALOT is funnier than ever.” Charles Isherwood of The Wall Street Journal raves the show is “deliriously funny. SPAMALOT is blazing like a burst of summer sunshine as winter draws near, it’s pure glee.” And Jesse Green writes “it’s a blissful Broadway revival” and awards it a New York Times Critic’s Pick!

Everything that makes a great knight in the theatre is here, from flying cows to killer rabbits, British royalty to French taunters, dancing girls, rubbery shrubbery, and of course, the Lady of the Lake.

Music, Lyrics & Book

(music, lyrics & book).

is one of the original six creators of “Monty Python’s Flying Circus” which began life on BBCTV in 1969. They eventually made five feature films, including two of the top ten comedy movies of all time. Eric, together with longtime collaborator and Composer John Du Prez, adapted The Holy Grail into the record-breaking musical Monty Python’s Spamalot , which ran for almost five years on Broadway. It was nominated for 13 Tonys, winning 3, including Best Director for Mike Nichols and the Tony Award® for Best Musical in 2005, plus a Drama Desk Award and a Grammy® for the authors. They then created a Comic Oratorio Not The Messiah, He’s a Very Naughty Boy based on Monty Python’s Life of Brian , which premiered in Toronto, and played The Sydney Opera House, The Hollywood Bowl, Wolf Trap, and Carnegie Hall and was eventually filmed with most of the Pythons at The Royal Albert Hall for the 40th Anniversary of Monty Python. Eric wrote, directed and starred in The Rutles , the world’s first mockumentary, and in 2012 he sang his own song “Always Look On the Bright Side of Life” before a billion people at the Closing Ceremony of the London Olympics. In 2014 he directed and appeared alongside conductor John Du Prez in the Monty Python final reunion show One Down Five To Go , which sold out London’s O2 Arena for ten nights. In 2018, his Sortabiography Always Look on the Bright of Life became a New York Times Best seller. In 2019 he was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer, which he survived thanks to early diagnosis and great doctors. Following his appearance on “The Masked Singer” in 2022, he launched The Bright Side Fund (Standup2Cancer/Eric Idle) to help fund Research. His musical play What About Dick? with songs by JDP is currently playing on Netflix.

John Du Prez

Born in 1946, he was so lucky to grow up in the World Heritage City of Bath with its International Festival and rich musical life. In 1965, armed with a bed roll and tape recorder, he collected and studied Sicilian folk music, which won him a Trevelyan Scholarship to Oxford. There, he studied Mandarin Chinese (of course) and spent a year in Hong Kong during which he was Principal Horn of the HK Philharmonic. Then on to London to gain a music degree and ARCM diploma and join the staff of London University. Meeting the Pythons in 1978, he started writing film music ( Life of Brian ) and having multiple chart success with Modern Romance . Their club hit “Everybody Salsa” won MR the New York DJ Syndicate 1981 award for Best New Band. He has scored more than 20 feature films including The Meaning of Life , A Private Function , A Fish Called Wanda , Once Bitten , UHF and Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (with its platinum soundtrack album). Other Python projects include the Contractual Obligation Album , Monty Python at the Hollywood Bowl and editing The Monty Python Song Book . In 2001, he co-wrote Monty Python’s Spamalot with Eric Idle which won them both Grammys®, the 2005 Tony for Best Musical and a Tony nomination for the score. He conducted their comic oratorio Not The Messiah on a world tour, which included Sydney Opera House, Hollywood Bowl (LA Phil) and finally the Albert Hall (BBC Symphony) for the Python 40th Anniversary. He was MD for the London O2 Arena farewell concerts - Monty Python Live (Mostly) - and recently scored the BAFTA Award-winning animation series “The Clangers”. For more info see johnduprez.com.
