The Intriguing World Of Entertainment

Whatever Happened To Jennifer Hetrick, ‘Vash’ From Star Trek: The Next Generation?

By Nick Lee | September 6, 2023

Jennifer Hetrick Vash On Star Trek

In the vast cosmos of the Star Trek universe, many characters have come and gone, leaving indelible marks on the hearts of Trekkies worldwide.

Among these iconic figures stands Vash, portrayed by the talented Jennifer Hetrick. With her fiery spirit and adventurous nature, Vash quickly became a fan favorite, especially for her intriguing relationship with Captain Jean-Luc Picard.

But as the years have passed, one question lingers in the minds of many: Whatever happened to Jennifer Hetrick after her Star Trek days?

Join us as we embark on a journey through time and space, unraveling the mysteries surrounding the life and career of this beloved actress.

Acting Career

Squeeze play.

Jennifer Hetrick - Squeeze Play

Hetrick’s first film role marked the beginning of her acting career with 1979’s Squeeze Play!, a comedy directed by Lloyd Kaufman. The story revolves around a group of women who, after becoming frustrated with their boyfriends who prioritize sports over romance, decide to create a softball team of their own and challenge them to a game.

The film received universally negative reviews.

Jennifer Hetrick Unsub

In 1989, Hetrick landed a main cast role on NBC’s crime drama Unsub, a portmanteau of “unknown” and “subject.” She played Ann Madison, member of an elite FBI forensic team, for all 8 episodes of the show’s run. It was unfortunately canceled after only one season.

Following her stint on Unsub, Hetrick continued on to feature as a recurring character on NBC’s legal drama L.A. Law between 1989 and 1991. Her character, Corinne Hammond Becker, appeared in 14 episodes during a storyline that involved a divorce proceeding, and she disappeared after the plot concluded.

Star Trek: The Next Generation

Vash Star Trek

In 1990, Hetrick would play Vash, a human archeologist known for shady business dealings and selling of priceless artifacts for profit, on Star Trek: The Next Generation. Picard is initially unaware of her duplicitous nature during Vash’s premiere episode, “Captain’s Holiday”, and so the two enjoy a romance while Vash simultaneously uses Picard to push her own hidden agenda.

Vash Star Trek

Although the two part ways, they meet again in 1991 episode “Qpid” when the seemingly omnipotent alien entity Q places them in a Robinhood fantasy together. Q then tasks a Robinhood-donned Picard to rescue Vash’s Maid Marien before she faces certain doom.

When Picard succeeds in his rescue, the two rekindle their romance once more before Vash chooses to join Q in his travels through the universe. This is the last we see of Vash on The Next Generation.

Fans generally did not care for Vash’s character and felt Picard, a self-identified morally upright man, should have comported himself with more dignity than to fall for the wiles of a charmer and thief. However, Hetrick was kindling a real-life romance with Picard actor Patrick Stewart, and the two were engaged at the time “Qpid” was filmed.

Just as with Picard and Vash, Hetrick and Stewart parted ways before long. The engagement did not conclude in a marriage.

Star Trek: Deep Space Nine

Vash Star Trek Deep Space Nine

In 1993, Hetrick made an appearance in season one of Star Trek: Deep Space Nine, reprising her role as Vash. The episode brings Vash aboard the titular space station to reveal that her partnership with Q has dissolved. However, Q appears before long in an attempt to woo her back.

What ensues is a competition for Vash’s attention between Q, Dr. Bashir, and Quark. Whereas Q and Bashir wish for the pleasure of her company, Quark recognizes her undeniable charm and proficiency for selling priceless goods.

At the end of the episode, Quark convinces Vash to continue with her business using Quark as a partner and financial backer for her operation. Vash agrees to the terms, but is never seen on-screen again.

Bodies of Evidence

Between 1992 and 1993, Hetrick portrayed Bonnie Caroll, wife of main character Lieutenant Ben Carroll, on the CBS police drama series Bodies of Evidence alongside Lee Horsely, George Clooney, and Kate McNeil.

Hetrick appeared on 4 of the series’ 16 total episodes. It was canceled after two seasons.

The X-Files

Jennifer Hetrick - x-files

In 1996, Hetrick appeared on an episode of The X-Files as Sharon Skinner, wife of assistant FBI director Walter Skinner, in an episode entitled “Avatar”. During the episode, she serves Walter with divorce papers leading to him having a one night stand with a stranger. When the stranger winds up dead in the morning, Scully and Mulder investigate the unusual circumstances.

Hetrick appears in various scenes in the episode. While her character survives the episode, including a car crash that lands her in a coma, she is never seen on the show again.

In 1995, Hetrick played Caroline Fontaine on an episode of Sliders called “Last Days”. Hetrick would appear on the show once more in 2000, but as a separate character entirely. Her second appearance was as Claire LeBeau in an episode entitled “The Seer”.

Other TV Appearances

Hetrick went on to appear on numerous TV shows including Alias, Criminal Minds, NCIS, Cold Case, Prison Break, 24, and Raising the Bar.

What is Jennifer Hetrick doing now?

Jennifer Hetrick now

Jennifer Hetrick remains an actress, although her last appearance was in 2018 on an episode of CBS medical drama Code Black. Hetrick has returned to filming TV commercials as well, including a 2018 ad for Prolia alongside Blythe Danner.

In recent years, Hetrick has taken a step back from mainstream Hollywood, focusing on smaller projects and personal pursuits. She’s been involved in community theater and has also explored other artistic avenues, including writing.

Relationships and Family Life

While Jennifer Hetrick’s romance with actor Patrick Stewart fizzled before tying the knot, Hetrick went on and married someone else. However, she has not shared details of her husband, including his name or occupation.

The two have one child– a daughter named Lilly.

Biography [ ]

Vash was an archaeologist who worked with Doctor Samuel Estragon at the Daystrom Institute Archaeological Council studying the Tox Uthat . Upon Estragon's death in 2366 , Vash defrauded Sovak in order to travel to Risa and search for the Tox Uthat .

While on Risa, Vash would encounter Captain Jean-Luc Picard of the USS Enterprise -D while he was attempting to vacation. Vash initially used Picard as a way to hide from Sovak and later used Picard to help her hide the fact that she had already discovered the Tox Uthat . Picard discovered her deception and destroyed the artifact. During their partnership, Vash and Picard developed romantic feelings for each other. ( TNG episode : " Captain's Holiday ")

Across her career, Vash used similarly disreputable tactics numerous times. This led to Vash twice being suspended from the Daystrom Institute Archaeological Council, banned from the Royal Museum of Epsilon Hydra VII , declared persona non grata on Betazed . ( TNG episode : " Qpid ", DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

Later, in the year 2367 , Vash would appear at a meeting of the Federation Archaeological Council aboard the Enterprise -D at which Captain Picard was to be the guest speaker. This led to a somewhat warm reunion between Vash and Picard, though she was saddened that Picard never mentioned her to his crew.

Q would appear during this time and offered to do something nice for Picard. Picard refused and Q eventually forced the Enterprise -D's crew into a Robin Hood scenario. In the scenario, Picard was forced to choose between rescuing Vash (playing Maid Marian ) or letting her die. Picard rescued Vash.

Following the incident, Q became fascinated with Vash and would ask her to travel with him. Picard advised against this, but Vash went with Q anyway. ( TNG episode : " Qpid ")

Vash would spend the next two years travelling with Q, aquiring artifacts and visiting numerous Gamma Quadrant locations including Errikand VII , Brax , and Errabus Prime . ( DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

In 2369 , Vash encountered the Even Odds , distracting Zin Dezavrim and stealing a valuable knife Facity Sleedow had retrieved. ( DS9 novel : Rising Son )

Later in 2369, Vash ended her partnership with Q and was discovered by Jadzia Dax . Dax returned Vash To Deep Space 9 , where Vash almost immediately partnered with Quark to auction off valuables she had brought from the Gamma Quadrant.

Eventually it was discovered that one of her artifacts was interfering with the operation of the space station and the artifact was removed. Vash would later turn down offers to re-partner with Q and to return to the Daystrom Institute . Instead, Vash was convinced to continue her search for valuable artifacts with Quark as her backer. ( DS9 episode : " Q-Less ")

In 2372 , a Changeling infiltrator boarded the USS Enterprise -E and studied Picard's personal logs . The infiltrator then used this information during negotiations to state it could assume the form of any of Picard's female acquaintances, including Vash. ( TNG eBook : A Sea of Troubles )

Q would later appear to Vash several more times between 2369 and 2374 . ( DS9 novel : The Fall of Terok Nor )

In 2377 , Vash was captured by the Borg and assimilated , becoming a Borg Queen . Two weeks later, she was rescued by Q and restored to normal with no memory of what had happened. ( VOY short story : " Iridium-7-Tetrahydroxate Crystals Are a Girl's Best Friend ")

Alternate timelines [ ]

Vash later became known as the Bajoran writer Eilin after she, Picard and Nog were transported back in time from the year 2400 aboard the USS Phoenix . ( DS9 novels : The War of the Prophets , Inferno )

In the season 2 premiere of Star Trek: Picard , television’s beloved starship captain-turned-vintner (Patrick Stewart) shares a bottle of wine with Laris (Orla Brady), a retired Romulan spy who has been his friend and housekeeper for a decade. Laris, recently widowed, decides to act on their long-simmering attraction, but Picard hesitates and spoils the moment. This leads Picard to reflect back on his life and wonder — after all the worlds he’s saved and the lives he’s touched, how is it that the great Jean-Luc Picard has spent his golden years alone?

This episode, “The Star Gazer,” teases that the coming season will reveal some deep-seated trauma involving his sainted mother Yvette that has fueled his intimacy issues throughout his life. However, Star Trek: The Next Generation has already offered plenty of evidence to explain Jean-Luc Picard’s bachelorhood. The Picard of TNG is a romantic when it comes to art, history, and exploration, but guards his personal feelings very closely . When he first takes command of the Enterprise , he makes himself as impenetrable and unapproachable as possible, carefully curating an image of perfect professionalism.

Over the course of seven years, Captain Picard becomes a friend or mentor to every member of his senior staff, but rarely shares as much of himself as he receives from others. His desire to hide the vulnerable parts of himself has always been framed as a side-effect of the discipline required to achieve and maintain the most prestigious posting in Starfleet.

His journey as we’ve known it begins in childhood, when Jean-Luc decides at a young age that his destiny is to command a Federation starship. Starfleet’s standards are daunting, and Picard throws himself into the tireless pursuit of academic and athletic excellence. In “Suddenly Human,” Picard says that this effort meant “[skipping] his childhood altogether.” Once at the Academy, Picard learns to have a bit of fun, playing cards and hustling dom-jot, but is still a constant overachiever, a two-sport athlete (cross-country and wrestling) who graduates at the top of his class. The single known blemish in his Academy career is a failing grade in Organic Chemistry, which he blames on his distracting romance with an individual known only as “A.F.” Picard spends the rest of his life overcorrecting for this mistake.

Picard reclining in a chair with an open shirt

Decades later (in “Samaritan Snare”), Picard tells his mentee Wesley Crusher that he’s “never had the time” for marriage. He claims that this is the cost of being an ambitious Starfleet officer, and that if Wesley wants to achieve what Picard has, he’ll have to eschew long-term personal commitments. There’s plenty of evidence in the Star Trek canon to support this claim — of the five classic Star Trek captains, only Benjamin Sisko makes time for a family life, and he commands a space station rather than a starship. Nevertheless, Picard’s avoidance of serious relationships occasionally leads him to make cruel choices. In “We’ll Always Have Paris,” we learn that Picard once had a passionate affair with a civilian, Jenice, while on shore leave on Earth. The two make plans to meet one last time before he ships out, but, afraid that seeing her again might dissuade him from returning to work, Picard completely ghosts her. He commits this act of youthful cowardice at the age of 37 .

Throughout his life, Picard seems willing to lower his guard and enjoy someone’s company only while totally separated from his work. Brief flings on shore leave are ideal, as they have built-in expiration dates. While on vacation to Risa in “Captain’s Holiday,” Picard hooks up with a roguish tomb raider, Vash, with whom he eventually opens up about his life and adventures. When Picard receives a surprise visit from Vash a year later (in “Qpid”), she expects Picard to be excited to see her. Instead, he’s embarrassed, and embarasses her in turn with his clumsy attempts to conceal the nature of their relationship from his crew. He’s told her everything about them, yet no one aboard the Enterprise has even heard of her. They’re all delighted to meet her, but Picard sees Vash as a threat to his well-protected image as a stoic, sturdy figure of pure superego. While Picard’s discomfort is somewhat understandable — plenty of people might find it awkward for their summer fling to show up at their office and make themselves at home — it’s also hurtful to Vash because there is no room for her in his life on the Enterprise at all. The entire ship is his workplace.

While Starfleet has no rules against fraternization, Picard carefully avoids romantic entanglements with his shipmates, both as a junior officer and as a commander. In his later Academy years, Picard develops feelings for his classmate Marta Batanides but chooses not to act on them for fear of complicating their friendship and their careers. A little Q-assisted time travel proves that this is the best outcome in this particular case (see: “Tapestry”), it still establishes an unfortunate pattern in Picard’s life in which he attempts to dismiss or suppress any feeling that might be inappropriate or inconvenient.

Picard letting his face be held by his vacation fling, Vash

One could even argue that Picard is attracted to unavailable women, not because he wants what he can’t have, but because he likes having an excuse not to have it. (See also: Kamala in “The Perfect Mate.”) Picard spends years in love with Dr. Beverly Crusher, his best friend’s widow who later becomes his shipmate and closest friend aboard the Enterprise. Picard believes that revealing his feelings to Beverly would mean betraying the memory of her husband, who died under his command, even though Dr. Crusher plainly attaches no such baggage to their mutual attraction. By the time they admit their feelings for each other, their friendship has become too comfortable to disturb. (Come to think of it, Q’s time travel lets Picard off the hook for this one, too, showing him a future in which Jean-Luc and Beverly are amicable divorcées in “All Good Things…”)

Picard has made two known attempts at managing an office romance. The first is purely backstory — his prior involvement with JAG officer Phillipa Louvois complicates Lt. Commander Data’s trial for personhood in “The Measure of a Man,” as well as Picard’s own court martial over the loss of the USS Stargazer years earlier. The second occurs on screen in “Lessons,” in which he falls in love with science officer Lt. Commander Nella Darren. Darren is sophisticated, cultured, and quite forward, and the two bond quickly over their shared love of music. (She bears a striking resemblance, both in appearance and temperament, to Dr. Beverly Crusher.)

Their relationship suffers from a combination of Picard’s hurdles with Vash and with Beverly. First, Picard wounds Darren by maintaining a cold professional distance from her while in the presence of other officers. Next, Picard is forced to order Darren to risk her life on a dangerous away mission, echoing the death of Jack Crusher. This is painful for the both of them, and they mutually decide that it would be best for Darren, who’s only just arrived on the Enterprise, to request a transfer. This appears to be Picard’s last swing at an ongoing romance; We’ve yet to see any evidence of a serious relationship in the 20 years between the last Next Generation film and the start of Star Trek: Picard .

In a manner of speaking, Jean-Luc Picard’s longest and most fulfilling romantic relationship lasted only 25 minutes. In “The Inner Light,” Picard becomes connected to an ancient alien probe that transports his mind to the planet Kataan and plays out the life of a local artisan named Kamin. Picard is still himself, retaining all his memories of his own life and none of Kamin’s, but his “amnesia” is patiently endured by his community and his wife, Eline. Picard spends years attempting to find a way back to his starship, but eventually settles into a quiet, provincial life on Kataan. He falls in love with Eline and they raise a family. After becoming a father, Picard admits that, while he once believed that he didn’t need children to lead a fulfilling life, now he can’t imagine life without them. Picard carries out Kamin’s life into old age, welcoming his grandchildren and weeping at Eline’s deathbed. At the end of Kamin’s life, the illusion ends and Picard learns that this entire experience has taken place over less than half an hour.

The conditions for Picard’s relationship with Eline perfectly circumvent his usual hangups. He’s separated from his Starfleet career, which becomes a distant memory. He has no reputation to uphold, and no authority to speak of until he begins investing in the wellbeing of his new community. He doesn’t need to seek attachment, because he’s already married to a patient, loving partner. He can’t cut and run, because he has nowhere to go. “The Inner Light” lets Picard live the life that his single-minded careerism and emotional boundaries have cost him, and he experiences it to the fullest. Eline might never have existed, but in many ways she is the love of Picard’s life. Only the limitations of 1990s episodic television keep her from being framed as such. After “The Inner Light,” his experience as Kamin is only referenced once, in “Lessons.”

Indeed, the demands of the medium in which he lives might well be Picard’s most challenging obstacle to maintaining relationships. The Next Generation was produced before serialization took hold over primetime American television, and the introduction of an ongoing romance for the main character would have been a major shake-up of the show’s comfortable status quo. Instead, Picard has a very gradual (and fulfilling) character arc over the course of its seven seasons in which he gradually lowers the personal barriers between himself and his shipmates. The Picard of the end of the series is single and technically childless, but does not seem incomplete. Instead, he comes to accept that the crew of the Enterprise is his family, and that he can enrich his life by accepting and returning the love they offer.

In the series finale, “All Good Things…”, Picard is allowed a glimpse of a possible future in which the Enterprise crew has gone their separate ways and he’s become a lonely old man working his family’s vineyard and suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder. The episode ends with Picard, in the present, joining the crew’s ongoing poker game, symbolizing that he’s finally willing to nurture his personal relationships.

Picard with his “family” in the TNG episode “The Inner Light”

The implication is that this act will change Picard’s life for the better, but Picard is denied his “happily ever after” by the ongoing march of the Star Trek franchise. Picard returns in four feature films , who each tighten the character focus around only two characters, Picard and Data, so that the progression of his other relationships become more difficult to trace. (Picard does seem much more at ease with his peers during the first 20 minutes of Nemesis , with a lot more “family” moments left on the cutting room floor.) He’s eventually pulled back into service for another spin-off, Star Trek: Picard , in which we discover that the crew of the Enterprise has gone their separate ways and he’s become a lonely old man working his family’s vineyard and suffering from a degenerative neurological disorder.

Star Trek: Picard is expected to conclude after three seasons, and will hopefully offer its title character a satisfying final act. The first season finds an older Picard who’s had time to reflect, and regrets not sharing his affection for his friends more openly. Season 2 is poised to confront why it’s so difficult for him to string together the words “I love you,” not only to friends but to prospective partners. But as “All Good Things…” demonstrates, a happy ending for Jean-Luc Picard doesn’t necessarily mean riding off into the sunset with a spouse or partner. The first season of Picard offers him a second chance at a found family with a new set of characters. “The Star Gazer” implies that Picard has “one final frontier yet to come,” an emotional journey in which he’ll confront the part of himself that fears commitment.

This may turn out to be a journey worth watching, but it’s not exactly unexplored space. The addition of a childhood trauma that scars him against intimacy could be an interesting angle, but it could just as easily flatten the character, recontextualizing a decade of gradual development into a response to a single incident. The success of this season of Star Trek: Picard may depend on whether it adds new wrinkles to the emotional life of the character or smooths over the ones that have been there all along.

Summary [ ]

The entire senior staff of the USS Enterprise -D is attending a lecture on archaeology , presented by Jean-Luc Picard . It is being held in orbit over Tagus III , a planet with extensive archeological ruins that have been closed off to any excavations or study for the last century . Picard is nervously reviewing his speech at his desk in his ready room when Counselor Troi walks in and reassures him that his speech is fine, and he should get some sleep. When Picard returns to his quarters and dims the lights, one light remains on, shining on a horga'hn sitting on his table. When he picks it up, Vash reveals herself in the doorway to Picard's bedroom and they passionately kiss .

Act One [ ]

Vash and the captain discuss why she is at Tagus III over tea the next morning. Vash's responses are vague, not admitting to being a member of the archeology council, but Picard is pleased to see her. Then, Doctor Crusher arrives unexpectedly. Picard is caught off-guard and stammers when introducing Vash. Beverly is surprised that Jean-Luc never mentioned that he met Vash while on vacation on Risa the year before . Crusher offers to give her a tour of the Enterprise while Picard is busy. Picard reluctantly agrees, and Vash promises the captain that she will "behave herself."

Crusher takes her to Ten Forward and, while getting them drinks, Commander Riker sees Vash from the bar while he is having a drink. Riker walks over and tries to make a pass at her. She turns the tables on him completely and introduces herself but is disturbed that neither Riker nor Crusher knew of her or of the captain meeting her on Risa. Riker agrees to continue her tour, which takes them to the bridge, where she runs into Picard again and promises to see him at the reception later.

Vash in Picard's chair

" Is this where Jean-Luc sits? "

At the reception, it is obvious that no one in Picard's crew knew of her or her previous involvement with the captain, particularly when even the ship's counselor knew nothing about Vash. She confronts Picard about this. He insists that it wasn't appropriate for him to discuss their involvement, but she accuses him of being embarrassed by her presence. Picard returns to the bridge and angrily goes straight to his ready room, where Q is waiting for him, sitting at his chair reading his speech on a PADD .

Q Returns

" Jean-Luc, it's wonderful to see you again. How about a big hug? "

Act Two [ ]

Q reveals that he has come to repay his debt to Picard for helping him when he was stripped of his powers the year prior. Picard tells Q that leaving would be repayment enough, but Q insists that he has to do something to actually help the captain. After refusing Q's offers to help him with his speech, take him to the Taguan ruins, and take him to the ruins back before the official sanctions were in place billions of years before, Q vanishes. Picard informs Riker that Q is around and wants to do something 'nice'. Riker tells Picard he'll alert the crew.

Picard goes to visit Vash and apologize, but when he enters her quarters, he finds maps of the ruins on a PADD and mining equipment in the next room. When he confronts her about her habit of robbing archaeological sites, Vash states it's simply who she is, and she can't change that. Picard agrees with the sentiment and they say they have nothing more to say to each other. Picard leaves and Vash sits down in a chair, unaware of Q sticking his head in through the wall.

Q confronts Picard in his quarters while he is trying to sleep, gloating because he finally figured out why he noticed something different about Picard, then reveals that he observed Picard's "spat" with Vash and regrets not appearing as a female to him initially. He warns Picard that love is dangerous and offers to get rid of Vash for him. Picard reacts strongly and Q brings up his debt again, which Picard dismisses. Q vanishes.

At the speech the next day, the senior staff are all sitting in the back row as Picard starts speaking. Something is wrong however: Dr. Crusher and Troi acquire triangular hats, Commander Riker suddenly is holding a quarterstaff, and Data acquires a monastic robe. The changes cause a buzz in the audience and when Picard stops speaking, he is suddenly wearing a period costume and they all vanish and reappear in a woodland. The senior staff quickly recognize that they've been cast in the guise of Robin Hood and his Merry Men and identify Q as the culprit. Before they can guess further, a noble figure arrives with troops and confronts them.

Act Three [ ]

Worf attacks him and is wounded, while the others retreat into the forest. After eluding their attackers, Q arrives on a horse in the guise of the High Sheriff of Nottingham and explains that he set all of this up and it is quite real and beyond his control, except that Maid Marian will be executed unless Robin comes to save her. Picard realizes that Vash has been drafted by Q to play the role of Marian.

In the castle, Vash is angry and confused, ignoring her lady in waiting who assumes she is ill and insulting Sir Guy of Gisbourne . He asks once again if she will marry him, and she slaps him hard across the face. Sir Guy is about to storm out of the room but mentions her execution. After that revelation, she becomes more amiable to him.

Data with an arrow in him

" Do not be concerned, Counselor. I believe your aim is improving. "

Back in the forest, some of the crew try to fit into their roles with mixed success, including Worf accidentally breaking La Forge's mandolin in a fit of annoyance, and Data being accidentally shot at with an arrow by Troi at his sixth intercostal support, penetrating his secondary processor. Frustrated, the captain tells Riker that he will attempt to rescue Vash on his own, despite Riker's protests.

Act Four [ ]

At the castle, Q is surprised and frustrated at Vash and Sir Guy being so agreeable to each other. When Sir Guy dismisses her back to her chamber, Picard is standing in the shadows, disguised as a hooded worker in the castle. Back in her room, Picard climbs in through Vash's window and briefly explains the situation. However, Vash is reluctant to escape with him when she hears he has come alone. She says she will stay and marry Sir Guy if it comes to it, but Picard picks her up to carry her. When guards burst in, she pulls his sword on him, causing his capture. Q looks on in amusement.

That night, Vash calls her maid in and tells her to deliver a letter to Robin's men in Sherwood Forest. The maid is reluctant and stalls until Q interrupts and reveals that he is intrigued by Vash's actions, leading her to deduce his identity. Then he reads her letter to Picard's crew and compliments her for her duplicity, admitting she fooled him. Despite saying she's worth further study, he calls the guards and declares Vash will be executed.

Act Five [ ]

On the morning of the execution, Vash and Picard go to the block arguing about who was more foolish in their actions. Q asks Picard if he's learned anything, and Picard demands Q set Vash free. While all of this is going on, it is revealed that Data, La Forge, and Riker have disguised themselves in robes and are in the watching crowd. La Forge declares that there are too many guards and Riker asks Data for a diversion. Data removes a component from his wrist and tosses it into a nearby torch.

Meanwhile, Sir Guy calls for the execution to proceed. Momentarily shocked that Q is going to allow it to go on, Picard places his head on the block. Just as the headsman is going to bring the axe down, however, the torch explodes and the Enterprise crew attacks. Picard gets drawn into a duel with Sir Guy, eventually defeating him and going to the tower to find Vash. Picard calls for an end to the charade and Q appears and congratulates him on his performance, assuring him that his crew are all fine, but berates him for allowing Vash (the metaphor for love in Picard's case) to expose negative qualities in him. Vash disagrees, saying it brought out the best in the captain. Q dismisses them back to the Enterprise , though Vash is nowhere to be found on the ship when Picard asks the Enterprise 's computer for her whereabouts.

Returning to his ready room, Vash appears in safari garb and explains to Picard that she and Q had things to discuss, and that Q had proved he still cared about her. When Picard asks where she's going next, Q appears and reveals that they've decided to partner with each other. Picard objects, listing Q's negative qualities, then realizes that Q and Vash are more alike than he'd realized. Picard tells Q that he can repay his debt by guaranteeing Vash's safety. Q agrees, then leaves to give them a moment to say goodbye (although he briefly reappears, claiming to have forgotten his hat). Vash and the captain kiss, say goodbye, and Vash vanishes.

Memorable quotes [ ]

" Bring back any memories? "

" Nice legs… for a Human. "

" Well, don't just stand there. Say something. " " Get out of my chair! " " And I was hoping for something along the lines of 'welcome back, Q. It's nice to see you again my old friend.' " " We're not friends. " " You wound me, mon capitaine . " (Q snaps his fingers and they switch places) " There, perhaps now your manners will show some improvement. "

" I suppose we could travel back in time. You could see what Tagus was like two billion years ago. They really knew how to party back in those days. "

" Without your assistance on our last encounter I would never have survived. I would have taken my own life but for you. " " We all make mistakes. "

" Tell me what is it you wish, and I'll be gone. " " Just be gone. That'll do nicely. " " No, no, no, no, no. It has to be something more, more… constructive! That's my new word for the day. "

" Some other time Q, right now, I have other matters to attend to. " " Oh yes, your speech. I read it, it's dull, plodding, pedantic, much like yourself. "

" I've just been paid a visit from Q. " " Q? Any idea what he's up to? " " He wants to do something nice for me. " " I'll alert the crew. "

" I knew there was something different about you. You seem tense, preoccupied, somewhat smaller. At first, I thought it was that horrible lecture of yours, but I was mistaken. "

" I had such high hopes for you, Picard. I thought that you were a bit more… evolved than the rest of your species but now I realize you're just as weak as all the others. Still it pains me, to see the great Jean-Luc Picard brought down… by a woman. "

" She's found a vulnerability in you… a vulnerability I've been looking for years. If I had known sooner, I would have appeared as a female. "

" Sir, I protest! I am not a merry man ! "

" I will not play the fool for Q's amusement! "

" I'll have you know I'm the greatest swordsman in all of Nottingham! " " Very impressive. There's something you should know. " " And what would that be? " " I'm not from Nottingham! "

" He 's devious, and amoral, and unreliable, and irresponsible, and--and definitely not to be trusted! " " Remind you of anyone you know? " " As a matter of fact, it does. "

Rehearsing Qpid

Michael Dorn and LeVar Burton rehearse

  • The idea for the Picard-Vash-Q love triangle was proposed by Randee Russell . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 161))
  • According to Michael Piller , " While we were trying to break it, someone said let's throw these characters into one of the classic love stories. " Ira Steven Behr had initially proposed setting this episode at Camelot . On Behr's suggestion, Piller changed it to Sherwood Forest to capitalize on the popularity of Robin Hood at the time, thanks to the release of Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves , in which Christian Slater performed. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 161); Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 219)
  • Ira Steven Behr thought the Camelot idea would have been boring. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation 365 , p. 201)
  • Michael Piller gave the idea to Ira Steven Behr to develop, as Behr was a huge fan of Robin Hood and, in particular, the Errol Flynn film The Adventures of Robin Hood . ( Mission Overview: Year Four , TNG Season 4 DVD special features) Behr, who had left the writing staff at the end of the third season , remembered, " I got a call from Michael about doing 'Qpid', and he wanted to know if I wanted to do it. I came in, we met, went off, wrote it. " ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p. 28)
  • Michael Piller elaborated, " It just seemed to be that Robin Hood and his band of merry men was a very nice group to put our guys into, and then we just played it for fun. That was what was so great about the fourth season and wasn't so great about the fifth season . Each week you were never quite sure what was going to come on. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 219)
  • Ira Steven Behr wrote Worf's smashing of La Forge's mandolin, and subsequent non-sequitur apology, as an homage to National Lampoon's Animal House . ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 161))

Burton filming qpid

LeVar Burton on set

  • "Qpid" was filmed between Wednesday 6 February 1991 and Friday 15 February 1991 on Paramount Stage 8 , 9 , and 16 , as well as on location. A second unit insert shot with Brent Spiner 's photo double Guy Vardaman was filmed on Wednesday 10 April 1991 on Paramount Stage 8 .
  • During filming, Michael Piller and Ira Steven Behr made a short visit to the set. ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p. 28)
  • The scenes of Sherwood Forest were filmed with one day location shooting on Tuesday 12 February 1991 in the Descanso Gardens , northeast of northeastern Los Angeles suburb Glendale. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 161)) Several close-ups of the actors were later filmed outside Paramount Stage 16 .
  • On the call sheets for this episode are several notes. On Thursday 14 February 1991 , Merri Howard wished everyone a "Happy Valentine's Day". The call sheet for the last day of filming, Friday 15 February 1991 reminded everyone about the long weekend, being Monday 18 February 1991 company holiday due to the President's Day Weekend. Also on 15 February 1991, actress Jean Simmons had her wardrobe fitting and the transportation department was informed to drive her to her 8:00 a.m. appointment.
  • During the filming of this episode, Jonathan Frakes suffered a cut eye when his prop quarterstaff broke after being hit by a sword and had to be taken to the hospital by Merri Howard . However, due to the rush, he was taken in his Robin Hood -era clothes. ( Star Trek: The Next Generation Companion  (2nd ed., p. 161); Selected Crew Analysis: Year Four – Profile: Vash , TNG Season 4 DVD special features)
  • While filming one scene where Vash paces back and forth, Jennifer Hetrick tripped over her dress. According to Hetrick, the shot was kept as the producers figured that Vash would not be comfortable in a period costume. ( Mission Overview: Year Four , TNG Season 4 DVD special features)
  • McFadden commented, " Marina and I have always laughed about the fact that both of us can do fencing and that sort of thing. We're the ones who bash pots over warrior's heads, instead of doing karate or whatever. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 219)
  • Director Cliff Bole noted, " I got a few letters about 'Qpid' that the women who wrote asked why weren't the ladies involved in a more modern way with the fighting. It was my feeling that we went back to the 12th century and we were doing the 12th century, and I can't change history. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 219)
  • Picard's reaction to the first encounter between Vash and Beverly Crusher in the finished episode differs markedly in tone from the script. In the final draft script, he simply introduces Crusher and also immediately confirms they met on Risa. [2] In the actual episode, he stumbles " Beverly…Dr. Beverly…Dr. Beverly Crusher " and initially exclaims " No " about the Risa suggestion, until affirming it two times.

Cast and characters [ ]

Stewart and Hetrick

Patrick Stewart and Jennifer Hetrick

  • Jennifer Hetrick made her second of three appearances as Vash . She appears again in the Star Trek: Deep Space Nine episode, " Q-Less ". In "Q-Less", O'Brien refers to "Qpid" when Commander Sisko asks him how Vash knows Q. O'Brien tells him: " I believe they actually met in Sherwood Forest ".
  • After the comedic " Deja Q ", John de Lancie asked the producers to give his character more "bite", as in early appearances. " Then came the Robin Hood one and I tried quite a bit actually to bend the words and the story to make it as malevolent as possible, but it had quite a bit of a fantasy quality to it. It really didn't lend itself to that 'mad, bad, and dangerous to know' quality, but I tried to make it that. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 263)
  • Clive Revill ( Sir Guy of Gisbourne ) appeared in both an episode of Star Trek and a Star Wars film. He supplied the voice of Emperor Palpatine in Star Wars Episode V: The Empire Strikes Back , although in the DVD release he was replaced by Ian McDiarmid , who played the emperor in all the other movies.
  • On the call sheets of "Qpid", Patrick Stewart was listed as "Picard/Tinker".
  • Stewart later portrayed King Richard in the film Robin Hood: Men in Tights as a parody of Sean Connery 's portrayal in the aforementioned Prince of Thieves .
  • Background actor John Copage made his second Star Trek appearance after 24 years following his role as Elliott in the Star Trek: The Original Series episode " The Doomsday Machine " in 1967 .
  • According to stuntman John Nowak , Patrick Stewart was engaged to Jennifer Hetrick during filming of this episode. Nowak remembered how he and Stewart fooled Hetrick due to their likeness. ( Information provided by John Nowak )

Continuity [ ]

  • Several costumes were re-used and worn by various members of the Federation Archaeology Council . One member wears Palor Toff 's robe while the Vulcan delegate wears Ki Mendrossen 's Vulcan outfit. John Copage wears Reittan Grax 's Betazoid outfit combined with Sovereign Marouk 's sash. Two Tanugan outfits were also re-used: A Human wearing Krag 's outfit sits next to a Bolian , played by Buddy Daniels Friedman , in Doctor Nel Apgar 's suit. Finally, there's one delegate in an Angosian suit, complete with the Angosian badge.
  • Q's statement to Vash that she's "…good. Really good" is very similar to something Quark said about her in DS9 : " Q-Less ".
  • Picard's skills and experience in fencing , first shown in " We'll Always Have Paris ", holds him in good stead.

Reception [ ]

  • Director Cliff Bole remarked, " It had everything that I liked as a director. It had Q, who's a very entertaining guy and character. What more would I love to do than Robin Hood: The Movie ? Here I was able to do that. I stepped back in time, there was sword fighting, some boisterous 12th century characters and also the spaceship. What more can you get? That's the ultimate as a director. Some guys like to do the man in the gray flannel suit, and I like to do fantasy. It was a show where Picard falls out of character a little bit. He's not as stoic as he usually is and falls for a beautiful woman, who was raised to do that. " ( Captains' Logs: The Unauthorized Complete Trek Voyages , p. 219)
  • Patrick Stewart commented, " I think that episode probably gave us as a group more fun than any other. We got to dress up for one thing. And the whole Robin Hood myth and the way the familiar characters of Robin Hood were divided among the regular characters was very entertaining…It was light-hearted and romantic and sexy and we got to wear these fancy costumes. " ( Mission Overview: Year Four , TNG Season 4 DVD special features)
  • Marina Sirtis remarked, " Any time a woman sees a man in tights, all bets are off. We just had such a blast. I loved some of the one-liners in that show from Michael [Dorn]. Just brilliant. The writing was really good on that show. " ( Mission Overview: Year Four , TNG Season 4 DVD special features)
  • This episode was accused of sexism. ( Captains' Logs Supplemental - The Unauthorized Guide to the New Trek Voyages , p. 17)
  • A mission report for this episode by John Sayers was published in The Official Star Trek: The Next Generation Magazine  issue 17 , pp. 7-12.

Screen Rant

I forgot 2 famous picard traits debuted in this star trek: tng episode.

Two of the things that Captain Jean-Luc Picard became best known for are introduced in the same episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation.

  • Picard's love for Earl Grey tea started in TNG's "Contagion" episode, becoming his go-to order.
  • "Contagion" also established Picard's interest in archeology, a hobby he carried throughout TNG.
  • Both tea and archeology were iconic elements of Picard, introduced in the same episode of TNG.

Two things best associated with Captain Jean-Luc Picard (Patrick Stewart) debuted in the same episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation . For seven seasons of TNG , Captain Picard led the USS Enterprise-D in its quest to explore the galaxy, and Jean-Luc became one of Star Trek's most beloved captains. Picard kept his crew members at a distance, rarely allowing anyone to get too close. With his rhetorical skills, Picard preferred a more diplomatic approach to conflicts, rather than the more brash tactics of Captain James T. Kirk (William Shatner).

Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation , more information was filled in about Jean-Luc Picard's background and interests. Picard's love of Shakespeare was established early in TNG season 1, as was his complicated history with Dr. Beverly Crusher (Gates McFadden) and her family. TNG season 2, episode 11, "Contagion" introduced two more elements that became important additions to Picard's character. In "Contagion," the Enterprise answers a distress call from its sister ship, the USS Yamato, only to witness the destruction of the Yamato minutes later. Prior to its destruction, the Yamato had reported numerous ship malfunctions, and the Enterprise soon begins experiencing similar issues.

Best Star Trek: TNG Episode From Each Of The Show’s 7 Seasons

Picard orders "tea, earl grey, hot" for the first time in star trek: tng's "contagion", by the time of star trek: picard season 1, jean-luc has switched to "tea, earl grey, decaf.".

Throughout Star Trek: The Next Generation' s "Contagion," everyone on the USS Enterprise-D is on high alert not only because of the malfunctions across the ship, but also because the Yamato and the Enterprise both breached the Federation/Romulan Neutral Zone. As the Sub-commander of a nearby Romulan ship grows increasingly suspicious, Picard and his crew work to uncover the cause of the malfunctions. After witnessing the destruction of the Yamato, Ensign Wesley Crusher (Wil Wheaton) struggles to confront the death of that many people and he opens up to Picard. As Picard offers Wes advice, he orders "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" from the replicator.

Chief Engineer Geordi La Forge (LeVar Burton) eventually finds a solution to the ship's malfunctions. Effectively, he turns the entire ship off and back on again.

Due to the continuing glitches across the ship, the replicator provides Captain Picard with a potted plant rather than the tea he requested. Although the replicator did not provide PIcard's drink of choice this time, "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" would become the captain's most common order. Over the course of TNG , Picard requested the drink dozens of times, always ordering it in the same way. "Tea, Earl Grey, Hot" soon became one of the catchphrases associated with Picard, and has spawned many pieces of tie-in merchandise such as t-shirts and mugs.

Star Trek: TNG's "Contagion" Establishes Picard's Interest In Archeology

In star trek: lower decks, picard funds the archeological adventures of petra aberdeen (georgia king)..

As the USS Enterprise-D investigates the destruction of the Yamato, they visit the planet Iconia, the former home of a highly advanced civilization. The Iconians were once believed to be a myth, but Picard had studied their culture when he was attending Starfleet Academy. In his conversation with the captain, Wesley Crusher asks Picard about the Iconians, and Picard reveals that archeology has been a hobby of his "since my Academy days." Later, Picard chooses to lead the away team to Iconia himself, likely in part, because he wants to see the remnants of the Iconian civilization firsthand.

On Iconia, Picard and his crew discovered an advanced transportation technology known as an Iconian gateway. Only two gateways were known to exist, the one in TNG's "Contagion" and one found by the Jem'Hadar in Star Trek: Deep Space Nine season 4, episode 23, "To the Death."

Jean-Luc's interest in archeology would become another recurring element throughout TNG , and it helped the captain on numerous occasions. Picard's love of archeology also led Jean-Luc to get caught up in several adventures outside of his usual Starfleet missions. For example, in TNG season 3, episode 19, "Captain's Holiday," Picard meets an archeologist (and profiteer) named Vash (Jennifer Hetrick) . Despite her questionable ethics, Picard finds himself intrigued by Vash and her archeological adventures, and the two share a brief romance. Jean-Luc Picard's love of archeology and Earl Grey tea have become iconic elements of the character, and they were both introduced in the same episode of Star Trek: The Next Generation .

Star Trek: The Next Generation is available to stream on Paramount+.

Patrick Stewart Said "Not Enough Screwing Or Shooting" For Captain Picard On Star Trek: TNG

  • Patrick Stewart felt Captain Picard should have had more action scenes and romantic encounters in Star Trek: The Next Generation.
  • Stewart's wish was fulfilled in later seasons of TNG, where Picard had more intense situations and romantic storylines.
  • Picard truly became an action hero in the TNG movies, where he had more action scenes and a new romance with a Ba'ku woman.

Patrick Stewart thought Captain Jean-Luc Picard should've seen more action in Star Trek: The Next Generation . As the commander of the USS Enterprise-D, Captain Picard turned out to be a very different type of Captain compared to James T. Kirk (William Shatner). On Star Trek: The Original Series , Kirk famously romanced many different women, both alien and human, and got into his fair share of fights. If Kirk was an action star, then Picard was a diplomat, preferring to solve problems with words rather than conflict . While this worked for the type of show TNG wanted to be, it seems Patrick Stewart wanted Picard to take a page out of Kirk's book.

During the early days of Star Trek: The Next Generation season 1 , Patrick Stewart wanted to keep things serious on set. Over time, however, the rest of the boisterous cast members wore off on Stewart as well. The TNG cast earned a reputation for their on-set antics, and Stewart wanted to bring some of that same energy into the show. TNG did not truly begin firing on all cylinders until season 3 , and from that point on, Picard and the Enterprise-D crew begin to find themselves in more intense situations.

How To Watch All Star Trek TV Shows In Timeline Order

Patrick stewart wanted picard to have more fun in star trek: tng, captain picard had more romances and action scenes as tng progressed..

In The Fifty-Year Mission: The Next 25 Years by Mark A. Altman and Edward Gross, screenwriter Ronald D. Moore describes a conversation he had with Patrick Stewart on the set of TNG season 3, episode 5, "The Bonding." Read his quote below:

The next time I was there I came to see them shooting my episode ["The Bonding"]. Richard [Arnold, archivist] took me down to the set, and they were filming a scene, and Patrick [Stewart] was there, and, at one point, Richard called Patrick over and introduced him to me and said, 'This is Ron Moore, he wrote this episode.' Patrick said, 'Oh, lovely to meet you. It’s a marvelous script. Just so delighted. So are you writing another one for us?' And I said, 'Yes, as a matter of fact, I’m writing one about this Romulan defector.' And he said, 'Oh, just marvelous, can’t wait to read it. Just bear one thing in mind: The captain doesn’t do nearly enough screwing and shooting on this show.'

In many ways, Patrick Stewart got his wish. Later, in TNG season 3, episode 19, "Captain's Holiday," Picard meets a woman named Vash (Jennifer Hetrick), who pulls Picard into an archeological adventure. Vash brings out a different side of Picard and he finds himself developing feelings for her despite their very different lifestyles. In one of Captain Picard's best episodes , TNG season 6, episode 18, "Starship Mine," Jean-Luc gets to channel his inner John McClane from Die Hard as he singlehandedly saves the Starship Enterprise from would-be thieves . While Picard may not have had as many romances or been involved in as many phaser fights as Kirk, the Enterprise-D captain had his action-hero moments, too.

Captain Picard Got To Do More "Screwing & Shooting" In The TNG Movies

Star trek: first contact allowed picard to be a true action hero..

Patrick Stewart wanted Picard to have his action hero moment, and while he had some action scenes on Star Trek: The Next Generation, Picard truly became an action hero in the TNG films. Star Trek Generations gave Picard the chance to meet Captain Kirk and save the galaxy alongside the Enterprise's iconic former captain. Though Generations had its fair share of action, Star Trek: First Contact is a true sci-fi action film from start to finish . First Contact pits Captain Picard against the Borg, and introduces one of Star Trek's best villains in the Borg Queen (Alice Krige).

In the next TNG film, Star Trek: Insurrection , Picard gets to have a new romance with a Ba'ku woman named Anij (Donna Murphy). Although the romance only lasts for the length of the film, it's a sweet love story added to the quieter plot of Insurrection . Picard didn't have as many romances as Captain Kirk, but Jean-Luc was a more reserved person who had difficulty opening up to people . Based on the latter half of TNG , as well as the TNG films, it seems somebody listened to Patrick Stewart's request for more action scenes and more romance. Jean-Luc Picard was always diplomatic on Star Trek: The Next Generation , but that doesn't mean he couldn't also be an action hero sometimes.

Star Trek: The Next Generation is available to stream on Paramount+. The TNG films are available on Max.
