This year is expected to be a big one for people seeking their lifelong dream vacations.

This sunny Indian Ocean nation is made up of more than 1,000 coral reef islands; most of the resorts here are on their own private island. Cruises and international trips on the rise; florida tops list of domestic destinations.

WASHINGTON, DC (Feb. 26, 2024) – If there’s one place that defines Spring Break, it’s Florida! AAA Travel booking data shows the Sunshine State tops the list of Spring Break destinations this year. Atlantic and Gulf Coast beaches, family-friendly attractions, and cruise ports make Florida a logical choice for travelers seeking fun in the sun.

“Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports,” said Paula Twidale, Senior Vice President of AAA Travel. “Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes.”

Cruising is off to a splashy start in 2024 with sold-out ships and inaugural sailings, and that strong demand is evident in Spring Break bookings. AAA Travel data shows a 28% increase in cruise bookings for March and April compared to last year, and a 60% percent increase for cruises departing from South Florida.

Good to Know: More travelers are booking cruises farther in advance, which is one of AAA Travel’s cruising trends this year. Many Spring Break cruises have been sold-out for months. Last-minute bookings are possible, but prices may be higher and cabin choices limited. If you miss the boat for Spring Break, AAA Travel suggests booking a summer cruise now before they sell out, especially if you’re eyeing popular destinations like Alaska.

International Spring Break trips are also on the rise compared to last year. AAA data for March and April shows international flight bookings are up 20% and hotel bookings are up 37%.  European cities top the list of most popular destinations: London, Paris, Rome, Dublin, and Amsterdam. “More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations. They want the convenience, expertise, and peace of mind that guided travel brings.”

The 2024 travel season kicks off with Spring Break: Where Tennesseans are heading

Gloomy winter weather is on the way out and March 19, the first day of spring, is quickly approaching.

That means longer, sunnier days. It also means crowds of adventurers descending on top tourism destinations — and Tennesseans are eager to travel in 2024.

According to a new AAA travel survey, 85% of state residents will venture out of the state this year and 45% of Tennesseans are likely to travel more than last year. Nearly one in every three Tennesseans has vacation plans over Spring Break, the survey found.

The busiest travel period in 2024? March through July.

"For the Tennesseans planning a Spring Break trip, the top trips planned are to beaches, major cities, theme parks, and national/state parks," said AAA spokesperson Megan Cooper. "Florida is always a popular trip for Tennesseans and it checks a lot of boxes for those looking for the beach, Disney World, or those that are planning on departing on a cruise from one of the Florida ports."

The surge in travel will be felt on the roads and at Nashville International Airport, travel officials said.

Busiest travel days in March

Nashville International officials are preparing for higher-than-normal traffic in the airport and on nearby roads throughout the month.

The busiest days for airline passengers at BNA will be March 8, March 10, March 17 and March 31, according to Nashville International Airport.

"While record-breaking numbers aren’t anticipated, BNA anticipates an uptick in passenger traffic throughout March," said airport spokesperson Erin Thomas.

Airport preparations include increasing staff in parking garages and valet lots, expanding availability in Economy Lot C and coordinating with the Department of Public Safety to manage traffic flow on the busiest days. BNA also offers free parking for up to 30 minutes at terminal garages.

The Transportation Security Administration is adding 25 screening agents to manage the volume of passengers.

Nashville airport officials encourage drivers picking up travelers to use the cell-phone waiting lot at 1415 Murfreesboro Pike instead of clogging roads by circling the terminal.

Busier airlines also means more potential for delays and cancelations, so travelers are encouraged to arrive early and track their flight statuses via airlines and sites like FlightAware.com.

Where is everyone going for Spring Break?

Many Nashville-area travelers will spend their Spring Break in Florida — which, led by Orlando, has numerous Spring Break meccas that fill up in the second week of March.

"Orlando is the top choice for Spring Break travelers, while Fort Lauderdale and Miami are the two most popular domestic cruise ports," said Paula Twidale, senior vice president of AAA Travel.

"Many travelers are looking for warm weather, pools and beaches, and outdoor adventures this time of year, and cruise vacations check all those boxes."

Gulf Coast cities of Destin, Panama City Beach and Clearwater are popular go-to beach trips.

In addition, Americans are flocking to cruise ships this year. Cruise bookings surged 28% for March and April, compared to last year, with a 60% increase in South Florida departures, according to AAA Travel.

Cruising is up and so is global travel. Thirty percent more Americans are flying internationally this year, AAA found.

"The travel season is already off to a hot start in 2024," said AAA Vice President of Travel Debbie Haas. "More AAA members are also booking tours for their international Spring Break vacations."

Cruise lines sailing into 2024 seeing strong demand, AAA says

The cruise industry is riding a wave of strong demand into the new year.

" Travel demand is off to a strong start, which means availability will continue to shrink in the next couple of months," Debbie Haas, vice president of travel for AAA, said in a statement. "So, if you want a specific itinerary, ship or cabin type, act fast or you’ll have to start planning for next year instead."

The cruise industry’s "wave season," the three-month period beginning in January, is underway. AAA said this period is the best time to book a cruise due to discounted pricing, cabin upgrades, drink packages and more.

The demand is coming on the heels of what AAA described as "record-breaking booking days" notched by cruise lines in 2023.

In 2023, cruises were projected to collectively see passenger volumes of 31.5 million globally, according to a report from the Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA), a trade association that counts Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean and other lines among its members.

People "may find more availability and competitive pricing by sailing during the fall and the period between spring break and summer" compared to the peak periods around school holidays, the group said.

U.S. travelers looking to sail to foreign countries may be relieved to hear getting a passport now takes less time. It has decreased to six to eight weeks for processing, according to AAA. It previously took eight to 11 weeks to receive a new passport.

The fine print

Interest charges

Penn State wins the 2024 DI men's NCAA wrestling championship

Just as they have done 10 times before under head coach Cael Sanderson, the Penn State Nittany Lions captured the Division I national title.

This time, though, Penn State made a little extra history in its victory. 

The Nittany Lions put eight athletes on the podium including four national champions, two runner-ups and two additional place winners.

Carter Starocci and Aaron Brooks headlined the success for the Blue and White, winning their fourth NCAA titles to become the sixth and seventh athletes to do so in NCAA wrestling . Starocci's win came by way of a 2-0 decision against No. 6 Rocco Welsh of Ohio State via an escape point and a stall point, but that was all he needed to finish on top once again. Aaron Brooks followed Starocci's footsteps, becoming the seventh four-time NCAA champ in history and the second for Penn State with his win over Hidlay 6-1. 

Heavyweight Greg Kerkvliet added a title at heavyweight, his first, with a 13-4 major decision of Lucas Davison in a match in which he did not give up a single offensive point. He set a tone of total domination. 

The Nittany Lions produced another national champ at 157 pounds as No. 1 Levi Haines completed his undefeated season with a strategic 4-0 shutout against No. 2 Jacori Teemer. 

Penn State's No. 2 Beau Bartlett and No. 2 Mitchell Mesenbrink finished as runner-ups, as No. 1 Jesse Mendez of Ohio State topped Bartlett 4-1 at 141 pounds, and Mesenbrink fell to Iowa State's No. 4 David Carr at 165 pounds 9-8. Carr's win gave him his second title for the Cyclones, the first of which came in his freshman season at 157 pounds. 

The Nittany Lions weren't the only team with historic moments on Saturday night, though. The Virginia Tech Hokies crowned just the second national champion in program history as No. 4 Caleb Henson turned up the offense at 149 pounds and earned a 15-7 bonus-point win over Michigan's No. 6 Austin Gomez, the 2024 Olympic rep for Mexico at 65kg. Henson is not only the second Hokie to finish on top of the podium in program history, but he is also the first national champion in NCAA wrestling history from the state of Georgia. His win is one of four podium finishers for the Hokies as part of their standout weekend in Kansas City. 

Arizona State, Cornell and Northern Iowa will also leave the Show-Me State with one champ each. Sun Devil 125-pounder Richard Figueroa earned his first national championship by way of a 7-2 victory against Iowa's Drake Ayala, while Cornell's No. 6 Vito Arujau topped four-time NCAA finalist No. 1 Daton Fix of Oklahoma State at 133 pounds 5-3 for his second title and No. 1 Parker Keckeisen bonused No. 3 Dustin Plott of Oklahoma State at 184 pounds.

SECOND PERIOD : Brooks chooses down to start the second period and escapes quickly. Brooks leads 4-0 with less than a minute to go in the second period. Hidlay is hit for stalling again, so Brooks picks up another point and now leads 5-0 as the period comes to a close.

David Carr is so beloved within the wrestling community that he has Iowa State fans, Iowa fans, Arizona State fans, Cornell fans and more cheering him on. This victory has been a longtime coming, but the Cyclone has now bookended his career with NCAA championships.

SECOND PERIOD: Ayala defers. Figueroa chooses down to start the second period, and he's out quickly. The Sun Devil is on the board first. The pace has slowed. There's a caution in the approach of each of these guys. Both fan bases are calling for stalling. Thirty seconds. This very well could be a one-takedown match, but somebody has to shoot first to make something happen. Shot from Figueroa. Takedown Figueroa! Ayala tried to scramble out on the edge, but the refs call for three points. The refs will review. "A-S-U" chants break out from the left side of the arena. They can feel it — their guy is that much closer to winning this crazy, wild, unexpected 125-pound bracket. Call is confirmed. Figueroa will hold a 4-0 lead going into the second period. What a clutch takedown from the Sun Devil! Iowa challenges. Call confirmed. 

FIRST PERIOD: Back in 2021, we had a similar final between an Arizona State and an Iowa lightweight when Hawkeye three-time NCAA Spencer Lee wrestled Sun Devil Brandon Courtney to a 7-0 win. We'll see what these two guys can do. Figueroa said his post-semifinal press conference that Courtney has been like a brother to him, whereas Ayala said he and Lee are more competitive with one another. Regardless of the outcome of this match, credit belongs to the University of Iowa and Arizona State for consistently developing elite lightweights. 

The pace is quick here early as these two athletes take stock of the match. No shots through the first two periods, but they are fast on their feet. Scoreless first period. 

285 pounds: No. 1 Greg Kerkvliet takes down No. 10 Lucas Davison 13-4

THIRD PERIOD:  Kerkvliet chooses down to start the third period, and he leads 9-3. He escapes quickly to extend his lead 10-3. Kerkvliet is 90 seconds away from adding his name to a long list of Penn State national champions. Davison needs to create some action fast to stay in this one. One minute to go. Takedown Kerkvliet! Twenty seconds. Davison escapes. He trails 13-4. Kerkvliet takes the win!

The arena is eerily quiet as these two All-Americans battle on the main stage. Shot from Kerkvliet. Davison is working to draw a stalemate, but Kerkvliet finishes. He leads 9-3 with ten seconds to go in the second period. 

FIRST PERIOD: First match of the night, and we're starting with the big men! Let's do it!

Michigan's Lucas Davison has himself quite the tournament to make it this far, taking down No. 2 Yonger Bastida in the quarterfinals and then beating No. 3 Wyatt Hendrickson in the semifinals. Here's his shot against the top seed and the athlete ranked No. 1 all year: Greg Kerkvliet.

Penn State's Greg Kerkvliet picks up the first takedown, and he's on the board within the first 90 seconds. Davison escapes quickly, and the wrestlers are back to their feet. Takedown Greg Kerkvliet!
