• The Moscow Kremlin: This is the best place known for the Kremlins (Russian citadels), a fortified complex in the center of Moscow. It includes five palaces, four cathedrals, and the enclosed Kremlin Wall with Kremlin towers. In addition, within the complex is the Grand Kremlin Palace, formerly the Russian emperor's residence in Moscow. The complex is now the official residence of the Russian president. It also features a museum with over three million visitors every year. It overlooks the Moskva River to the south, Saint Basil's Cathedral and Red Square to the east, and Alexander Garden to the west.
• Red Square: It is next to the Kremlin, which has an east wall, and the famous Pokrovski Cathedral (Cathedral of St Basil the Blessed), which is one of the most beautiful monuments of age-old Russian architecture built in 1555–1560, symbolizing the victory of Ivan the Terrible over the Kazan Khanate. It has magnificent domes apart from paintings inside and outside the cathedral. Red Square is one of the oldest and largest squares in Moscow, which is the site of official military parades and demonstrations intended to display the strength of Soviet armed forces.
• Baikal Lake: Lake Baikal is extensive and diverse so that everyone can put it on the itinerary for a perfect holiday here. From just sitting on its shore to hiking up Chersky Mountain, it offers leisure and adventure. The area surrounding Baikal is unique, and many of the flora and fauna exist only in this area. The lake is filled with rich marine life like Baikal Seals, 50 species of fish, 25 species of gobies, and over 320 bird species. This lake is protected under the Lake Baikal Coastal Protection Zone and is now designated as a UNESCO World Heritage site.
• The State Tretyakov Gallery: It is an art gallery in Moscow, considered the foremost depository of Russian fine art in the world. It was built in 1856 when the Moscow merchant Pavel Mikhailovich Tretyakov acquired artworks by Russian artists to create a collection that might later grow into a national art museum.
• Sochi: Sochi is known as a city and resort area of Krasnodar Kray (territory), in the southwestern region of Russia. The city shares a border with the Black Sea coast at the foot of the western part of the main Caucasus Mountain range. The presence of mineral springs, beautiful coastal and mountain scenery, long beaches, and a pleasantly warm climate has made Sochi a large and popular holiday destination and a health resort for vacationers. Sochi has dozens of hotels, tourist centers, campsites, and over 50 sanatoriums. The streets of the city and gardens are filled with exotic subtropical trees and shrubs. 
• Lighthouse Egersheld: Established in 1876, Lighthouse Egersheld is one of the oldest lighthouses in Russia. It is located on an artificial stony spit from Tokarevsky Cape - the so-called Tokarevskaya Koshka. Tourists can visit the first one from the Tokarevsky Cape to the lighthouse by car. Another part of the spit, leaving into the sea, is called the "cat's tail,” which one can reach during the low tide. 
• Kenozersky National Park: About 550 miles from Moscow city, the Kenozersky National Park contains natural and cultural monuments. It is also a famous ecotourism destination. Several trails have been opened in the park. In addition, there are many wooden architectural monuments. The park is home to small, quaint villages, rugged hills, ancient wooden chapels, and serene lakes. It is encompassed by breathtaking taiga forest and huge wetlands that add to its charm. This attraction was declared a UNESCO biosphere reserve in 2004.
• The Golden Ring: The name ‘Golden Ring’ refers to an overland tourist route, a return loop from Moscow that became a popular journey among Muscovite travelers in the 60s. This is a perfect retreat to the medieval cities of Russia. It is nestled amidst green hills and floral meadows, with rambling country roads surrounded by forests, lakes, orchards, and wooden farmhouses. 
• Kizhi Island: It is declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site, located amidst Lake Onega. The island is home to stunning wooden architectural marvels and shows brilliant traditional crafts. It also features the country’s oldest wooden church - the Church of the Resurrection, which dates to the 14th century.

• Take a canal tour: This amazing tour begins from St. Petersburg Canal. You can discover the romantic network of canals within the city, built around the waters of the Neva River. Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. The dos and don'ts of visiting Russia for the first time

The world’s largest country beguiles and fascinates with its world-class art, epic landscapes and multifaceted society. You may also find that perseverance  and a sense of humour will go a long way in enriching your first-time Russian travel experience. From the things you absolutely must do before you travel to the things we recommend that you steer clear of once you're there, here are some top tips for avoiding common pitfalls when visiting  Russia .

DO apply for a visa early and register on arrival

Visas must be applied for in advance by all visitors. How you do that varies depending on your nationality and where in Russia you are traveling to. Travelers from many countries, including the UK and US, need to apply in-person at an embassy or consulate and provide biometric data. An e-visa may be an option for passport-holders from 52 countries, which include many EU travelers, as well as those from China, India, Japan, Singapore, and some Middle Eastern countries. However these are temporarily suspended due to COVID-19.  Check with your local Russian embassy or consulate for confirmation, or get up-to-date information here . 

You can apply at the last moment, but it may cost you a fortune. Start the application process at least a month before your trip and consider using a specialist travel agency to arrange visas and make key transport bookings. Every visitor to Russia should have their visa registered within seven days of arrival, excluding weekends and public holidays. The obligation to register is with your hotel or hostel, or landlord, friend or family if you’re staying in a private residence. Also keep in mind that your visa entry and exit dates will be written according to European calendar convention (day/month/year) as opposed to the American style, so don't get mixed up or over-stay your visa. 

DO check the events calendar

During major holidays – the first week in January (between New Year’s Day and Orthodox Christmas) and the first week or two of May (around Labour Day, or May Day, and Victory Day) – Moscow and St Petersburg empty out. Despite this, both cities are festive during these times, with parades, concerts and other events, but museums and other institutions may have shortened hours or be shut altogether. May to September is the best time to visit St Petersburg but mid-June is when the city is irresistible, with the White Nights revelry at its peak.

DO dress up for a night out

We can’t guarantee you’ll make it past Moscow’s "face control" (the term comes from clubs trying to "save face" by only letting in patrons who meet their image standards) but you can better your chances of getting in to the top clubs by making a sartorial effort – high heels and skirts for women, all black for men. Russians also make an effort when they go to the theater or a posh restaurant – you should do likewise to fit in.

DO learn the Cyrillic alphabet

Making an effort to familiarize yourself with the Cyrillic alphabet repays tenfold. It will help you decode street and metro signs, maps, timetables and menus, even if you don't know many Russian phrases. While digital tools like the Russian Metro app  and Google Translate make it easier than ever to visit countries where you don't speak or read the language, brushing up beforehand can reduce frustration and endear you to the locals.

Rideshare options such as Taxovichkoff and Yandex Taxi upended the taxi industry in Russia as much as anywhere else. That means less pressure to know the Russian phrases you'd need to hails cabs in the streets, but it still is wise to learn key phrases in case there's a navigation mixup, like the address of your hotel or intersection of your short-term apartment rental. 

DO expect to spend your money

Moscow is one of the most expensive cities in the world and St Petersburg is not a cheap destination either; wallet-thinning shock is common at many restaurants and hotels. As a foreigner you’ll also find yourself paying more than a Russian for some museums – often as much as 10 times the price Russians pay. If you’re a student, flashing your ID can save you money at museums and other institutions.

You can save on dining out a few different ways. Many restaurants offer "business lunches" that are great value and very filling. Several years ago the trend for " anti-cafes " cropped up in larger Russian cities, and there are still a few where you pay by the minute for coffee, biscuits, and a little wi-fi time. 

Food markets  that blend farmers markets and food halls are popular, and are often found in architecturally significant vintage buildings. You can shop for ingredients to cook yourself or sample cuisines from around the world from dozens of  vendor stalls. Many food markets are less expensive than sit-down restaurants and let you try a wider variety of local and international dishes. 

DON’T ask for a mixer with your vodka

Few traditions in Russia are as sacrosanct as the drinking of vodka , and any foreign notions of drinking it with orange juice or tonic are anathema to your average Russian. If you need something to wash it down, you can chase it with a lemon, a pickle or, perhaps, a separate glass of water. Vodka is drunk in swift shots, not sipped. It’s traditional (and good sense) to eat a little something after each shot, so order some vodka snacks too.

DON’T be disrespectful in a church

Working churches are open to everyone, but as a visitor you should take care not to disturb any devotions or offend sensibilities. There's no face control, but women should cover their heads and bare shoulders when entering a church. In some monasteries and churches it’s also required for a woman to wear a skirt – wraps are usually available at the door. Men should remove their hats in church and not wear shorts.

DON’T take photos of government buildings

Be very careful about photographing stations, official-looking buildings and any type of military-security structure – if in doubt, don’t snap! Travelers have been arrested and fined for such innocent behaviour.

DON’T be surprised if you’re stopped by the police

Although new laws were passed in 2011 that ostensibly reconfigured Russia's police and their interactions with the public, it's still wise to carry a photocopy of your passport, visa and registration – not to mention travel documents that indicate how and when you'll return home – and present them when an officer demands to see your documents. You may also see special tourist police near major attractions like the Red Square , who have special training and language skills to assist travelers.

If you're issued a fine, Russian authorities might expect an "unofficial payment" to expedite their service on the spot, as opposed to handling the matter later at the station. Either way, always ask for an official receipt, and consider carrying the phone number for your country's embassy in case matters get more complicated.

St Petersburg’s legendary State Hermitage Museum or the Winter Palace, was historically the main residence of the Russian Tsars. Today it presents something of a quandary – do you view the three million (no, that’s not a typo) artworks spanning the Paleolithic to the present day, or the grand architecture housing the art – the splendid confection of the Winter Palace with swathes of gold on walls, columns and ceilings?

According to those in the know, if you spent a minute looking at each exhibit, you would need 11 years to see them all.

Part of the Golden Ring of quaint towns some 200km north-east of Moscow, Suzdal was the capital of the Rostov-Suzdal principality in the 12th century. It’s a quaint little town with a very rich history. Having avoided the industrialisation that blighted much of Russia during the Soviet era (it was bypassed by the Trans-Siberian railways in the 19th century despite lobbying by locals), the town is dotted with stunning historic Russian architecture, including blue-domed churches (the Nativity of the Virgin Cathedral), monasteries, and its very own 10th-century Kremlin.

• Russian power voltage is 220V 50Hz;  Plug C
• The Russian currency is the Russian ruble and is around 69 RUB to 1 USD
• Get your visa well in advance . North Americans and most Europeans will need visas to enter Russia. The official invitation option has been dropped, however people still need to show certain documents, such as hotel confirmation letters, bank/income statements or a travel insurance policy.
• Upon arrival you will be handed a  migration card  that is either filled out or blank (which you will need to fill out yourself!) You will need this card to register at hotels and to leave the country so make sure you don’t lose it!
• Be extremely careful at zebra crossing / crosswalks.  There are times when cars will not slow down and will fail to give way.  Never assume that a driver will stop for you when you cross the street. 
• When buying art you need the piece certified as being  culturally insignificant  to have it pass through customs. It can take time to get the proper documents, so it is advisable to avoid buying art if you are visiting Russia for a short time.
• Women should cover their heads with a scarf in Orthodox churches, if it is an active church.
• Travelers are advised against all travel to Chechnya, Ingushetia and Dagestan, as well as all but essential travel to North Ossetia, Karachai-Cherkessia and Kabardino-Balkaria.
• Avoid drinking water from the faucet, especially in St. Petersburg. The water leaving the purification plant is fine but the water pipe system is woefully outdated and the purified water is often contaminated with city ground water.

When to go To Russia

Russia  has a largely continental  climate  because of its sheer size with warm to hot dry summers and cold winters with temperatures of -30°C and lower and sometimes heavy snowfall. 

In Moscow and St. Petersburg the first snow usually falls in late November and stays till early April. The average winter temperature is about -10°C. Much of the country experiences only two main seasons: summer and winter.

• Russia has four seasons and there is no bad time to visit Russia if you are prepared for the weather.
• It has a very similar climate to Canada.
• Summer (June to August) is a good time for road trips , hiking, and exploring cities.
• Winter (November to February) is great for skiing, ice skating, and winter carnivals.

What to Pack for Russia

• Layers –  You could possibly be sweating all afternoon and then be freezing by nightfall! Make sure to stock up on the layers. If you plan on heading to Russia during the winter make sure to pack the  winter essentials:  Warm, waterproof, fleece-lined boots big enough to wear with heavy wool socks, hat, waterproof gloves and thermal long underwear!
• Classic Basic items  – You do not need to be a fashionista to blend in. The key is in embracing neutral toned items that can be mixed and matched easily. Avoid logos, baseball caps, shorts, hoodies, flip-flops and running shoes as these items scream  tourist!
• Rain Essentials –  the weather can be a little unpredictable so make sure to pack a lightweight easily compacted waterproof/windproof jacket and a pair of waterproof boots.

The Perfect Itinerary for Russia – St. Petersburg to Moscow in One Week

Given the vastness of Russia, a visitor can come here for any number of days and find that they’ve barely scratched the surface of what this northern country has to offer. A cross country trip would easily entail a medium-haul flight so it is perhaps not surprising that most visitors concentrate in the main touristic centers between St. Petersburg and Moscow, the capital. If you are visiting Russia and have around one week to spare, here is a suggested itinerary for you to follow.

Day 1 – St. Petersburg

You could start in St. Petersburg or Moscow, it doesn’t really matter. During my trip, I entered Russia via St. Petersburg. One of the most visually stunning cities in Europe, St. Petersburg was the capital during the Tsarist era when Russia was still a monarchy. Today, remnants of these imperial splendors are very much evident through the baroque and neoclassical architecture within the city center.

Tip: Much of St. Petersburg’s historic center is comprised of small islands connected by drawbridges. These are drawn daily from around 1:20AM until just before day break. If you find yourself in one of these islands during the wee hours of the morning, you might end up getting stuck until sunrise so be mindful of the schedule.

Obtain your bearings at the Hermitage (skip queues and purchase discounted tickets here ) which houses a massive collection of art from around the world. This museum houses works by Michelangelo, Rembrandt and Leonardo da Vinci among others. When visiting the Hermitage, it is advisable to purchase a ticket online to avoid the long queues. If possible, ask a local to help you book or get the hotel concierge to help you in order to buy at a cheaper rate from the Russian language version of the website. If you are a real museum buff, you can easily devote a today exploring the many nooks and crannies but if like me, you are a casual visitor then 2 hours should be enough.

A lunch option I would recommend is Duo Gastrobar (8A Kirochnaya Street, +78129945443). Do call in advance to reserve a table. My favorites include the beef tartar and crunchy pork ribs.

After having your fill in the museum, head to the St. Petersburg Mosque . Built in the Uzbek style, the mosque was patterned after the tomb of Tamerlane in Samarkand. It was closed during the communist era until Sukarno, the former president of Indonesia, requested it to be reopened during a state visit to Russia.

From the mosque, it is just a short walk to the Peter and Paul Fortress . The impressive complex houses a church containing the tombs of Russia’s czars. Entrance is free though you need to pay admission to enter some of the churches.

Head back to the historic center by late afternoon to admire the low-rise skyline of St. Petersburg from the observation deck of the St. Isaac’s Cathedral . From there, it is a short walk to Gorokhovaya Street , the hipster district of the city. It would well be dinner time by the time you get here. A restaurant I highly recommend is Clean Plates Society  (13 Gorokhovaya Street) with its delicious array of steaks, burgers and even local food.

Day 2 – Peterhof and Pushkin

The two main day trips from St. Petersburg that most visitors take are Peterhof and Pushkin for the splendid palaces found in these towns. Peterhof (discounted tickets here ) is known for the Russian-style Versailles that was built during the reign of Peter the Great. While it is possible to enter the palace, the highlight is undoubtedly the gardens featuring a cascade with golden statues and chessboard flooring. Allow at least a few hours to soak in the grandoisity of the lanscaped areas.

From Peterhof, you can easily take an UBER to Pushkin which is home to the Catherine Palace.

Day 3 – St. Petersburg

This day can be spent visiting the attractions you missed out during the previous days. A stroll through the main drag, Nevsky Prospekt , is worthwhile for the stunning architecture. You will also encounter the Kazan Cathedral and the Church of the Savior on Spilled Blood . The latter is highly recommended and well-worth the admission to enter. The interiors are as stunning as the colorful bulbous domes you see from the outside.

Although not typically included in the standard tour of St. Petersburg, a visit to Yusupov Palace is a must. Historically, the house is known as the place where Rasputin was murdered but the interiors offer a peek at how late 19th/early 20th century Russian nobility lived. The palace has plenty of impressive rooms including the Moroccan-inspired drawing room and the humongous theater.

For lunch, I suggest heading to Restaurant Schengen (5 Kirochnaya Street), a casual cafe with everything from risotto to open-faced sandwiches in a cozy atmosphere. The tables facing the floor-to-ceiling windows are the best. This is a great place to visit for lunch as you get 20% off until 4pm if coming during a weekday.

The rest of the day can be spent strolling around the historic center to admire the many churches, palaces and museums or if you’re done with St. Petersburg, hop on a train or plane to Moscow.

Day 4 – Moscow (Kremlin, Red Square and Tverskaya Street)

The frenetic megacity that is the capital of Russia could not be more different than St. Petersburg. Moscow is Europe’s largest cities and its many ring roads personally give off reminders of other megacities such as Beijing. With gnarling traffic and an overwhelming road network, Moscow takes time to appreciate.

Start your trip in Moscow by visiting the Kremlin (discounted tickets here ). This is Russia’s seat of government and houses a number of churches and an armory aside from the parliament buildings and the president’s residence. You will need to book way in advance if you wish to enter.

From the Kremlin, it is a short walk to the Red Square where Moscow’s famous military parades are held. During normal days, it gets overcrowded with tourists scrambling to get a shot of the colorful  St. Basil’s Cathedral . The nearby Lenin’s Mausoleum has free admission and is opened daily except for Sundays, Mondays and Fridays. Venture into the upscale GUM with its impressive architecture. The caviar shop at the ground floor is a popular place to bring pack some premium gifts for loved ones. For a bird’s eye view of the city, head up to the rooftop bar of Ritz Carlton Moscow called O2 Lounge . The drinks and bar food are pricey but the views are sublime.

Walk up Tverskaya Street to do some window shopping. This is one of Moscow’s main shopping streets and you can easily spend hours here. End the day at Patriarch’s Ponds just west of Tverskaya. The area offers a slower pace of life than what its downtown location suggests and in recent years, has become a magnet for hipsters. You will find no shortage of hip and happening bars and restaurants in this area but one I would recommend is Saxon + Parole (12/9 Spiridon’yevskiy Pereulok ) .

Day 5 – Moscow

Walk by the riverside until you reach the Cathedral of Christ the Savior . This relatively new construct was rebuilt only in the 1990s after the fall of the Soviet Union, with the original church blown up on Stalin’s orders. This is the tallest Orthodox church in the world. From the pedestrian bridge leading to it, you can get some sumptuous views of the Kremlin.

From the cathedral, take either bus #255 or M3 towards the direction of the Novodevichy Convent . Its location just next to a pond makes it a wonderful photo opp especially with the convent’s array of towers and bulbous domes.

Among Moscow’s many parks, my favorite (aside from Patriarsky Ponds) is Kolomenskoye Park . Make no mistake about it – this is not your ordinary walk in the park! What makes the place special is the fairy tale-like wooden palace that was originally constructed during the time of Tsar Alexis I. It subsequently fell into disrepair and the current one you see is a reconstruction from 2010. Apart from this palace, the Ascension Church located within the park is also worth a look. It has been inscribed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. To get here, the nearest train station is Kolomenskaya.

For dinner, check out Probka (2 Tsvetnoy Blvd, +7 495 995 9045), an award-winning Italian restaurant opened by celebrity chef Aram Mnatsakanov. If you are able to make it for lunch instead, you get 20% off from 11AM to 4PM.

Day 6 – Moscow (Exploring the Metro)

A trip to Moscow is not complete without exploring its marvelous metro stations. Visiting these stations on your own can be daunting especially if you don’t know how to read the Cyrillic alphabet. The major stations near the tourist spots have Roman alphabet as well but those outside the center usually don’t.

You can easily spend half a day exploring the metro stations which have some distinctive designs but if you need to cut it down to a few, you’ll need to check out the following: Mayakovskaya Belorusskaya, Prospekt Mira, Novoslobodskaya and Komsomolskaya with the last one being the grandest of all.

One of the most outrageous examples I’ve seen of Russian architecture is the Izmailovo Kremlin located in the east. Although looking more like a theme park these days, the buildings inside are colorful and instagram-worthy. You’ll also find a wooden church within the complex.

To check out where Moscow’s hipsters hang out, you’ll need to venture to Flacon , a series of warehouse converted into shops, art galleries, cafes and clothing stores. You’ll find plenty of brands here that are sold nowhere else in the city. Alternatively, you can also trying making the trip to Vinzavod in the Basmany District for its eclectic art galleries.

One of the poshest places to eat in Moscow is Cafe Pushkin and this is where most high end tourists go but I would suggest going instead to Bolshoi Restaurant  (Petrovka Ulitsa) if you are seeking for a fine dining place. The food here is loads better and less pretentious. It’s also around 30% cheaper than Cafe Pushkin without scrimping on the ambiance.

Tips for Traveling Around Russia

• Learn Cyrillic – Russia’s alphabet is easy to learn and will help you loads as you decipher shop and restaurant names and most importantly, metro station signs.
• Travel insurance – Depending on the trip, I may or may not buy travel insurance. If I am going for a short eating trip in Kuala Lumpur, I don’t but in the case of Russia where it’s a long trip in an exotic country, I decided to buy one. I usually buy here as it allows me to compare between insurance providers and I also get vouchers with each purchase.
• Use metro cards – Getting the metro cards in cities such as Moscow and St. Petersburg will save you lots when it comes to transport cost and is far more convenient than buying tickets on the spot. For places that are not covered by the metro, you can consider ride-sharing apps like UBER.

Where to Stay in Russia

St. Petersburg – The Crowne Plaza St. Petersburg Ligovsky is very convenient with its located just across one of the biggest shopping malls in St. Petersburg. Nevsky Prospekt is also just a short walk away. Rooms are decked in palatial decor without losing out on modern creature comforts. Prices are also reasonable.

Moscow – I particularly liked the InterContinental Moscow Tverskaya  as the service there was the best I’ve encountered in an InterContinental hotel. Breakfast is overwhelming with plenty of choices while the location right smack in Tversakaya and a short walk from bus stops and the metro makes commuting extremely easy.

I read your blog on Russia, it was wonderful and the photos you have taken was beautiful too!! May I know which month you went to Russia as I read somewhere you mentioned raining. It will be my 1st time going Russia and am super excited to start planning for my trip which is early June next year, hopefully the weather is cooling and not hot.

By the way, how do you travel from Moscow to St Petersburg? By train or by air plane?? So it is a must learn how to read cyrillic alphabet before going to Russia? As there isn’t any English words at at the metro station etc.

Oh lastly is there any special local food or dessert to recommend that is a must eat when you are at Russia?

Hi, I visited in June. I did not travel Moscow – St. Petersburg. I actually went to Kazan in between so my route was St. Petersburg – Kazan – Moscow. For these, I went by plane all the way.

Learning Cyrillic is not a must but would be extremely helpful. It is easy to learn anyway. There aren’t English words at the metro stations except for the ones located in the tourist areas.

Recommended food – balaclava, borsch, caviar. The food in Russia is quite good – especially their interpretation of Western European cuisine!

Hi Bino – We are two old retirees thinking of going to Russia and the Baltic states on our own..and accidentally came across your blog..and we were excited that you are from Singapore.

We are just wondering how to apply the Russian visa and the Tourist Invitation letter from Singapore. We saw a number of the agents and are they reputable and trustworthy.

I my wife and daughter planning to visit moscow and spb. Fr 15 july to 24 july. I did not book anything . Can you tell me the names of any government tourist offices in moscow and spb with address and contact no. Can i get gIde book and metro map from them.
