If you're on a desktop computer, use the Facebook website in your web browser to start a live broadcast . Facebook recommends that you use the Google Chrome browser , but the feature works in other browsers, too.

To get started, launch your favorite web browser and open Facebook . Log in to your account if you haven't already.

At the top of your news feed, beneath the new post box, click "Live Video."

Facebook will take you to a "Create Live Video" page. On the right of the page, select "Go Live."

On the left sidebar, select the "Connect Video Source" option. You'll now specify what tool you'd use for the live streaming.

On the right pane, to directly use your webcam for the streaming, choose the "Webcam" option. If you want to use a streaming app like OBS, then select the "Streaming Software" option. We'll go with the former option.

Scroll down the page to the "Camera Controls" section. Here, choose the webcam and microphone you'd like to use . The "Video" section will let you preview your current video.

To the far right of your screen, in the "Post Details" section, enter a name and description for your live streaming.

Now before you go live, take a look at various customization options available in the left sidebar. Here, you can choose who can see your live streaming, whether you'd like to post about the streaming on your timeline , and more.

When you've configured the options, and you're ready to start the stream, click the "Go Live" button in the bottom-left corner.

Facebook will display a countdown timer and you will then go live. You may now use various on-screen options to interact with your audience.

When you'd like to end your live streaming, in Facebook's bottom-left corner, click "End Live Video." Then choose "End" in the prompt.

Facebook will display a "Quick Actions" menu letting you perform an action on your live video recording. Select an option if you'd like.

And that's how you virtually meet your fans on this giant social networking site. Happy socializing!

You can also choose to send notifications about your streaming to some of your friends and followers from this page.

Then go back to the main screen by tapping the left-arrow icon at the top.

On the main screen, at the top, you have three icons. The first icon (magic wand) allows you to add some cool effects to your live video. The second icon (a lightning flash)  turns on your phone's flashlight  to improve lighting. The third one (a camera with rotating arrows) lets you switch between the rear and the front camera on your phone.

At the bottom of the page, you can optionally add a description for your streaming. Then, you can invite people to go live with you by tapping the person icon. Further options can be revealed by choosing the hamburger menu (three horizontal lines).

Finally, when you're ready to go live, tap the "Go Live" button.

Facebook will start your live streaming on the platform, and you'll see a "Live" icon in the top-left corner. You're now free to communicate with your audience however you want.

To end your live streaming, in the app's bottom-right corner, tap "Finish."

Once the video has ended, you can optionally post it to your timeline by tapping "Post Now." Or, you can delete the video by tapping the trash can icon.

And that's how you connect and engage with your audience with this cool little feature on Facebook. Enjoy!

What is facebook live, how does it work, and which devices support it.

In an attempt to rival Twitter-owned Periscope, Facebook lets mobile users broadcast live videos. Now, more than a year after introducing Facebook Live, all users can now go live from a computer .

With this functionality, Facebook is going after desktop-aimed streaming sites, such as Twitch and YouTube Gaming. Desktop streamers can broadcast from their webcam and use external hardware or streaming software, just like they can from Twitch. That means you aren't limited to one type of stream, as you can broadcast your face or things like gameplay footage and picture-in-picture videos.

Here's everything you need to know about Facebook Live, including how to broadcast from a mobile phone or desktop.

What is Facebook Live?

Facebook Live is a feature found on Facebook's website and in the Facebook mobile apps. With this feature, you can start a live video, and your friends and followers can watch and engage with the broadcast in real time. This feature debuted in 2015 and has slowly expanded to more platforms, with the most recent update bringing desktop users into the fold.

How do you go live on Facebook?

  • Launch your Facebook for iOS app
  • Tap "What's on your mind?" at the top of your news feed Tap Live Video
  • Write an optional description for your broadcast
  • Tap Go Live to begin your broadcast
  • Tap Finish when you want to end your broadcast
  • Launch your Facebook for Android app
  • Tap "What's on your mind?" at the top of your news feed
  • Tap Go Live
  • Go to Facebook.com using the Google Chrome web browser
  • Click "What's on your mind?" at the top of your News Feed
  • Click Live Video
  • Write something about your live video
  • Select the audience for your live video
  • Click Go Live

External hardware and streaming software

You can go live with external hardware and even streaming software like OBS, Wirecast, or XSplit, making it easy for publishers to switch between cameras, stream PC gameplay, make how-to guides, and incorporate on-screen graphics, titles, and overlays. Facebook said you can go live directly from News Feed, your profile, or this direct link here . Here's a step-by-step guide .

How does Facebook Live work?

To add a filter to your live video, go to the iOS or Android app to start your live broadcast, then tap the wand icon and scroll to view all filter options. You can tap any filter to select it. You'll also see the ability to draw or doodle on videos while live.

Facebook offers Live Reactions in live videos to make it "easy for your viewers to express their feelings in real time during a live broadcast."

Live Reactions features the same reactions that Facebook launched for posts in the news feed. So, you can select Love, Haha, Wow, Sad, or Angry, and then you can see those reactions animate on top of the broadcast. Live Reactions appear and disappear in real time, and when your friend reacts to your video or to a video you are both watching, you will see their profile pic and a starburst before their reaction appears.

This feature really reminds of us Periscope, as that broadcasting app lets you double tap your phone screen in order to send love/hearts (a heart will appear next to your avatar) to a broadcaster in real-time.

Similar to Periscope, Facebook Live lets you engage with broadcasters using real-time comments. Facebook said it noticed people comment 10 times more on Facebook Live videos than on regular videos. It also wants people watching the broadcast after the fact to still feel as though they're watching in the moment, so it'll replays comments as they happened during the broadcast for people watching later.

Is there a time limit for a live videos?

The time limit for a live video on Facebook is four hours.

How do you find live videos on Facebook?

You will see live videos from your friends and people you follow appear in your news feed, and you may even get a notification when a friend or people you follow start broadcasting (depending on your notification preferences). When you're watching a live video or a video that was live, you can click Subscribe to be notified the next time that account broadcasts. You can also find live videos on the Facebook Live Map .

How do you manage notifications?

Enable or disable notifications.

  • Click in the top right and select Settings
  • Select Notifications on the left
  • Click On Facebook
  • Scroll down to Live Videos to make changes to live video notifications

I updated to Safari 14.1 (15611.1.21.161.5, 15611) and got a security update this morning before work. First, Youtube audio was stuttering. So I cleared the cache, history, and cookies as recommended in another thread. After reboot, Youtube is still stuttering, but also Facebook will not load. Could it be the update?

Where to watch Monte Carlo Masters: Live stream the 2024 tennis tournament

When you buy through our links, Business Insider may earn an affiliate commission. Learn more

The latest stop on the ATP Masters 1000 tour is underway. The Monte Carlo Masters brings some of the world's best men's tennis players away from the US, where they've been playing at Indian Wells and the Miami Open this past month, and to the sunny shores of Monaco. We've compiled everything you need to know about the competition, including where to watch the Monte Carlo Masters final on Sunday.

The tournament will conclude this weekend. Both Sinner and Djokovic suffered upsets in the semis, meaning we have an intriguing battle between Casper Ruud of Norway and Stefanos Tsitsipas of Greece to enjoy in this year's Monte Carlo Masters final.

The final will air a bit early in the US, at 9 a.m. ET / 6 a.m PT. Fortunately, the US live TV packages we recommend have DVR features, so you can also record the matches and watch them later. Keep reading to learn everything you need to know about the tournament, which concludes on Sunday.

Where to watch Monte Carlo Masters in the US

As is the case for many stops on the ATP Tour, the Tennis Channel will be the US home for the Monte Carlo Masters. If you don't have cable, this means it's time to try a live TV package that carries the network, like Sling TV or Hulu + Live TV.

Sling TV will be the cheaper option today. You'll need to select Sling Orange ($40 a month) and combine it with the Sports Extra add-on ($11 a month) to access the Tennis Channel. This will run you a total of $51 a month. The Sports Extra plan also includes the MLB Network and NBA TV, among other bonuses.

For just the essentials without any extra fluff, Sling TV is the streaming service you're looking for. It's more customizable than other plans, with three options you can choose from, so you pay for only what you need. New members get their first month for $10 off.

For Hulu + Live TV , you'll need to get a standard live plan ($76.99 a month) and combine it with the Sports Add-on ($9.99 a month). In total, you'll be paying $86.98 a month. This is the more expensive option out of these two choices, but keep in mind that it comes with regular Hulu, ESPN+, and Disney+ bundled together.

facebook live on safari

Hulu + Live TV includes over 90 channels, along with Hulu's on-demand library and access to Disney Plus and ESPN Plus. Adding live TV drives up the price significantly, but it's a rolling one-month contract that you're free to cancel at any time. As live TV services go, though, this is one of the best.

Where to watch Monte Carlo Masters in Australia

Australians can tune into the matches via beIN Sports , which costs AU$14.99 a month. If you're a new customer, you can get a one-week free trial, which happens to be the length of this tournament. In addition to the ATP Tour, you can also catch several WTA matches through this service.

How to watch Monte Carlo Masters from anywhere

If you're not going to be in your home country during the tournaments but still want to tune into your live TV subscriptions, it might be time to try out a VPN (virtual private network). VPNs are handy tools that alter your electronic device's virtual location so that you can still access websites and apps that might have geographical blocks. This recommendation will be best for people who are simply traveling away from home and wishing to access their existing subscription services, since the ones we've recommended require country-specific forms of payment.

Our go-to recommendation is ExpressVPN , a beginner-friendly option with a 30-day money-back guarantee for hassle-free use. Interested in learning more? Check out our ExpressVPN review for full details and keep reading to see how to use a VPN.

facebook live on safari

With its consistent performance, reliable security, and expansive global streaming features, ExpressVPN is the best VPN out there, excelling in every spec and offering many advanced features that makes it exceptional. Better yet, you can save up to 49% and get an extra three months for free today.

Note: The use of VPNs is illegal in certain countries, and using VPNs to access region-locked streaming content might constitute a breach of the terms of use for certain services. Insider does not endorse or condone the illegal use of VPNs.

Stabbing rampage at Sydney mall leaves at least 7 dead, including attacker

Seven people are dead and others are in serious or critical condition after a stabbing rampage at a mall in Sydney, Australia , on Saturday, according to police. The attacker, who was shot by a lone officer, was among the dead, and a baby among those stabbed.

New South Wales Police Commissioner Anthony Cooke told a news conference that the attacker walked into the Westfield Bondi Junction mall at about 3:20 p.m. local time (1:20 a.m. ET) where he “caused harm” to about nine people “stabbing them with a weapon he was carrying.” The weapon “was most likely a knife,” he said.

A spokesperson for New South Wales Ambulance told NBC News that a 9-month-old baby was “transported to Sydney Children’s Hospital with a pediatric stab wound.”

Cooke said that an inspector near the scene was guided to the offender’s location by members of the public. As she pursued him from behind, Cooke said the offender turned and the officer shot him.

“She took the action, saving a range of people’s lives,” he added.

He said the offender’s motives were not clear, but he acted alone and that there was no continuing threat.

Image: AUSTRALIA-CRIME-POLICE

Speaking at the same news conference, NSW Ambulance Assistant Commissioner Brent Armitage said two other people had been transported to hospitals across Sydney. Their condition was not known.

Surveillance video showed a man running through the mall holding a long knife. Reports from local media described chaos, as some shoppers fled and others attempted to stop the man. Some shops reportedly pulled down their shutters, sequestering some people inside in order to keep them safe.

Hundreds of people were evacuated from the mall.

In a live interview with 9News Sydney, the local broadcaster, a man outside the mall said he helped a baby after a woman was stabbed. “The mum came over with the baby and threw it at me, with this hole in the baby, it looked pretty bad,” he said.

Roi Huberman, a sound engineer at ABC TV in Australia, told the network that he sheltered in a store during the incident.

“Suddenly we heard a shot or maybe two shots and we didn’t know what to do,” he said. “Then the very capable person in the store took us to the back where it can be locked.” She then locked the store and led them out through the back entrance.

Andrew Reid described helping some of the injured victims, including one woman who was “bleeding pretty badly.”

“That poor woman she there was a lot of blood,” Reid, who was shopping for a bed, told Sky News. “She lost a lot of blood and me and a couple of other bystanders helped with her.”

Australia’s Prime Minister Anthony Albanese called the attack “a horrific act of violence that indiscriminately targeted innocent people.”

In a news conference, he said the nation “offers our deepest condolences and sympathies to all those who are grieving for someone they have lost. And we send our strength to those who have been injured.”

King Charles III said he and Queen Camilla “were utterly shocked and horrified to hear of the tragic stabbing incident in Bondi.”

“Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed during such a senseless attack,” he said in a statement. “While details of these shocking circumstances are still emerging, our thoughts are also with those who were involved in the response, and we give thanks for the bravery of the first responders and emergency services.”

Prince William and his wife Kate, the Princess of Wales, issued statement on X .

“We are shocked and saddened by the terrible events in Sydney earlier today. Our thoughts are with all those affected, including the loved ones of those lost and the heroic emergency responders who risked their own lives to save others,” they said.

Westfield Bondi Junction thanked its team and law enforcement for their “swift and brave action.”

Albanese said the police officer who shot the attacker was “certainly a hero,” and that “there was no doubt she saved lives with her actions.”

Pixelmator Pro Adds Support for Editing Text in PDFs

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 has gone live on the Mac App Store, and the latest update to the popular image editing app brings the ability to edit text in PDFs, along with a handful of other notable additions.

pixelmator pro pdf text editing

With the newest version, this support has been expanded so that users can edit imported text as regular text layers. In practice, this means existing text in PDFs can be more easily replaced, formatted, and styled using Pixelmator Pro tools. As the developers explain:

Typically, text in PDF documents is not directly editable. Instead, it's stored as vector shapes to keep documents looking consistent across various platforms and apps. To make text editable again, Pixelmator Pro extracts various embedded data from the original PDF, allowing it to recover the original text, fonts, and formatting. Even if some of these elements are missing, for instance, if the original font is not installed on your Mac, you can still import the text, select a different font, and continue with your edits.

In addition, the new text editing abilities mean users can seamlessly export Apple Keynote and Pages projects and continue editing them in Pixelmator Pro. All text remains fully editable in its original fonts, including the SF Pro font that is used throughout the Apple ecosystem.

Elsewhere in this update, the Style tool has been improved to simplify the creation of custom outlines around text layers. Users now have the option to add strokes inside, within, or outside of the text, choose from various stroke ends and corners, and also add dashed strokes.

Pixelmator Pro 3.5.8 also includes 12 new templates for web, social media, and more. All of the templates include a set of alternative color palettes for adjusting the theme to custom requirements.

Pixelmator Pro is available exclusively from the Mac App Store as a free update for existing users and $49.99 for new customers. A free seven-day trial of the software with no restrictions is also available on the Pixelmator website .

  • Several people have been killed in Israeli attacks on Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza and on Rafah in the south, as six more were killed in an attack on a Gaza City market.
  • A UNICEF aid convoy is hit by Israeli gunfire in the latest incident of humanitarian relief workers coming under attack in Gaza.

US predicts Iranian attack on Israel but does not expect to be drawn into war

The White House says it expects an attack by Iran against Israel but one that would not be big enough to draw Washington into war, reports Reuters news agency.

A US official said late on Thursday that Washington did not want a conflict to spread in the Middle East, and the US had told Iran it was not involved in an air strike on its consulate in Damascus, Syria.

The Israeli attack killed seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two generals, on April 1.

The White House said it warned Iran not to use that attack as a pretext to escalate further in the region.

Majority of UN committee in favour of moving towards membership for Palestine: Maltese envoy

Vanessa Frazier, Malta’s Ambassador to the UN, said there was no consensus at the second meeting of the UN committee.

However, she said, the majority of members were in favour of moving towards membership for Palestine.

“Many countries outlined the fact that Palestine fulfils all the criteria that are required under the Montevideo convention and also of article four of the charter,” she said.

“As the chair of the committee, I have decided that I will be circulating our first draft of a report under the objection procedure, and we will see what happens next” Frazier said.

Malta currently holds the presidency of the UN Security Council.

UN Security council failed to reach consensus on whether to admit Palestine

The UN Security Council’s committee on the admission of new members has failed to reach a consensus on whether to admit Palestine as a full member of the UN.

Two-thirds of the committee were in favour. However, the group could not reach the consensus required to make a recommendation to the General Assembly.

Poll: Majority of Americans believe Israel committing genocide against Palestinians

A new survey conducted by YouGov says that 36 percent of Americans believe that Israel is committing genocide against the Palestinians, compared with 34 percent who do not and 30 percent who are unsure.

Sixty-three percent of respondents expressed support for reaching a ceasefire, and 58 percent expressed their disapproval of the way Joe Biden is dealing with the war between Israel and Hamas, compared with only 23 percent who approved of it.

Regarding whether the United States should increase or reduce its military aid to Israel, 18 percent said it should be increased, while more than twice as many (37 percent) said it should be reduced.

YouGov says this survey was conducted from April 6-9 and included approximately 1,800 adult American citizens.

At least 20 Palestinians killed across Gaza today, Gaza media office says

Gaza’s media office says Israeli attacks on mosques, schools and markets “packed with civilians” have killed at least 20 Palestinians across the enclave in the past 24 hours.

Here is the breakdown according to the office:

  • Attacks on two mosques in the Nuseirat refugee camp killed one person.
  • Attacks on a UN-run school and the Malaysian school in the Nuseirat refugee camp killed three people.
  • Attacks on the Firas market in northern Gaza and another market in central Gaza killed another seven people.
  • Attacks on several residential homes in central Gaza and in the southern city of Rafah killed at least nine people.

“We condemn and decry the ongoing crimes being carried out by the occupation army against civilians, women, and children,” the media office said.

Destruction in Khan Younis ‘disproportionate to anything one can imagine’: WHO

Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, the director-general of the World Health Organization (WHO), posted on X that the WHO and partners went to Khan Younis yesterday to assess the health facilities there.

He said the team described the destruction as “disproportionate to anything one can imagine”.

He said, “Attacks and hostilities have left Nasser Medical Complex, al-Amal and al-Khair hospitals non-functional. These facilities have no oxygen supply, water, electricity or sewage system”.

“The team saw that the Nasser Medical Complex warehouse – which supplies many hospitals in the south – was burning, and severely damaged. It is estimated that fire has destroyed the majority of supplies, including a substantial amount of essential medicines and medical and trauma supplies provided by WHO and partners” he said.

“The once robust health system in Gaza is broken. WHO and partners stand ready to support reconstruction and rehabilitation efforts, but we need a ceasefire,” he concluded, adding, “Nothing else can bring a lasting and humane outcome”.

What has been said about Iran’s threat of retaliation?

As tensions rise amid expectations of an Iranian retaliation to Israel’s deadly April 1 strike on its consulate in Syria, several countries have issued statements today. Here is a brief summary:

Russia’s Foreign Ministry told citizens they should not travel to the Middle East, especially to Israel, Lebanon and the Palestinian territories.

“Right now, it’s very important for everyone to maintain restraint so as not to lead to a complete destabilisation of the situation in the region, which doesn’t exactly shine with stability and predictability,” Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told a news briefing.

German Foreign Minister Annalena Baerbock called on her Iranian counterpart Hossein Amirabdollahian to urge “maximum restraint” to avoid further escalation.

The German airline Lufthansa, one of only two Western carriers flying to Tehran, extended a suspension of its flights to the Iranian capital.

British Foreign Minister David Cameron said he had made it clear to Amirabdollahian that Iran should not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict.

Cameron said on X, “I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence.”

State Department spokesperson Matthew Miller said Secretary of State Antony Blinken called counterparts, including the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi foreign ministers, “to make clear that escalation is not in anyone’s interest and that countries should urge Iran not to escalate”.

US President Joe Biden said on Wednesday Iran was threatening to launch a “significant attack in Israel” and that he had told Netanyahu that “our commitment to Israel security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is iron-clad”.

What’s the impact of Israel’s targeted killing strategy?

The three sons and four grandchildren of Hamas political leader Ismail Haniyeh were assassinated in Gaza on Wednesday.

Their names have been added to a long list of people killed by Israeli-targeted operations worldwide.

But why does Israel pursue such a policy? And what impact does it have?

Listen to Al Jazeera’s Inside Story podcast to find out more:

The solidarity of shared trauma: De-exceptionalising Gaza

Eric Reinhart

Since the Israeli bombing and invasion of Gaza began last October, a long-simmering global movement has emerged, particularly from the Global South, in solidarity with the Palestinian people.

At least tens of millions of people have marched through the cities of the world in protest of Israeli-perpetrated genocide.

In the US, the ruling class and closely linked media have typically portrayed such expressions of solidarity, if acknowledged at all, as simply a matter of vague ideological kinship or abstract anti-US or anti-Israel sentiment, often taking recourse to misleading accusations of anti-Semitism to explain it all away.

By doing so, they ignore its historical roots and the ongoing truth to which this movement testifies: There is a deep psychic and visceral connection that binds countless people from diverse backgrounds to the gruesome oppression of Palestinians and to the enabling indifference to it shown by so many North American and European observers.

Gaza Civil Defence says more bodies recovered from Khan Younis

The Civil Defence says on its Telegram channel that it recovered 13 more decomposing bodies in the al-Balad and al-Amal neighbourhoods of the southern Gaza Strip city.

On Sunday, the Israeli army announced that it had pulled out of Khan Younis after a months-long military occupation that saw both of the city’s major hospitals, al-Amal and Nasser, besieged by Israeli forces.

Here are some photos published by the Civil Defence of the recovery operation:

US restricts travel for staff in Israel

The United States has restricted its employees in Israel and their family members from personal travel outside the greater Tel Aviv, Jerusalem and Beersheba areas amid Iran’s threats to retaliate over Israel’s April 1 air strike on its embassy compound in Damascus.

The Israeli attack killed seven members of Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), including two generals.

Asked about the security alert at a press briefing, US Department of State spokesperson Matthew Miller said, “We conduct ongoing assessments all the time about the situation on the ground.”

“I’m not going to speak to the specific assessments that led to us to restrict our employees’ and family members’ personal travel,” Miller said, “but clearly we are monitoring the threat environment in the Middle East and specifically in Israel.”

UN team witnesses ‘profound destruction’ in Khan Younis

The UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs posts on X that a UN team has visited Khan Younis and witnessed destroyed homes, schools and hospitals as well as unexploded ordinance.

Many residents of Khan Younis have returned to their homes in recent days after the withdrawal of Israeli troops from southern Gaza. Many of those homes have been destroyed.

Gallant to Austin: Any strike on Israel would require a strike on Iran

Israeli Defence Minister Yoav Gallant says on X that he has spoken with US Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin and discussed preparations for the “possibility of a direct attack from Iran”.

This would, in Gallant’s words, “require [Israel] to respond appropriately”.

Iran has blamed Israel for the April 1 strike on its consulate in Damascus, which killed senior members of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. Since then, the Iranian government has repeatedly said it will respond.

“The security cooperation between Israel and the USA is powerful and unquestionable,” Gallant said in his X post, echoing the words of Biden on Wednesday that the US “commitment to Israel’s security against these threats from Iran and its proxies is ironclad”.

Iran should de-escalate, prevent further attacks: UK foreign secretary

British Foreign Secretary David Cameron says he has spoken to his Iranian counterpart and made it clear that “ Iran must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict.”

As we reported earlier, Amirabdollahian has stated that a response to Israel’s attack on the Iranian consulate in Damascus on April 1 would be “legitimate”.

Today I made clear to Foreign Minister Amir-Abdollahian that Iran must not draw the Middle East into a wider conflict. I am deeply concerned about the potential for miscalculation leading to further violence. Iran should instead work to de-escalate and prevent further attacks. — David Cameron (@David_Cameron) April 11, 2024

‘I do not want to be a partner in the starvation of two and a half million people’: Israeli relative of captive

Ella Metzger, the daughter-in-law of Yoram Metzger, who has been in Hamas captivity in Gaza, has told the Israeli parliament that she does not want to be a partner in the starvation of 2.5 million Palestinians in Gaza.

“I did not raise Nazis in my house, and I personally am not a Nazi,” she said, adding that the state leadership must be removed “to find a solution and bring in the wise and sensible”.

Iran’s foreign minister says retaliatory response to attack on its consulate is ‘legitimate’

Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian says he has spoken with his German, British and Australian counterparts about an attack on an Iranian consulate in Syria that Tehran blames on Israel.

Amirabdollahian said he emphasised that when Israel breaks “international law and the Vienna Conventions” by “violating” diplomatic and consular premises, then a retaliatory response is “legitimate”.

He referred to the April 1 attack in Damascus, which killed Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), and his deputy, General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi.

Amirabdollahian said if the UN Security Council fails to condemn the attack, then a “legitimate defence with the aim of punishing the aggressor is a necessity”.

“I stated that Iran does not seek to expand the scope of the war but [seeks] the return of security in the volatile region,” he said in a post on X.

Blinken speaks to Turkish, Chinese, Saudi counterparts on avoiding escalation in Middle East

According to the US State Department, Secretary of State Antony Blinken has spoken to the Turkish, Chinese and Saudi Arabian foreign ministers in the past 24 hours to make clear that escalation in the Middle East is not in anyone’s interest.

Department spokesperson Matthew Miller told reporters at a news briefing that Washington continues to be concerned about the risk of escalation in the region, specifically after threats made by Iran towards Israel.

Iran’s mission to the United Nations suggested today that any Iranian military response to the deadly Israeli air raid on the Iranian consulate in Damascus  could have been averted if the UN Security Council had denounced Israel’s attack.

Video shows moment Gaza City market was targeted by Israeli bombs

Video posted on Instagram by Palestinian journalist Mahmoud Zaqout – and verified by Al Jazeera – shows an earlier Israeli strike on Firas market in northern Gaza that killed at least six people.

Qassam Brigades surprises military analysts

Omar Ashour, a security and military studies professor at the Doha Institute for Graduate Studies, has spoken to Al Jazeera about how the performance of Hamas’s armed wing, the Qassam Brigades, over the past seven months has surprised many military analysts.

Here is a summary of his main points:

  • The Qassam Brigades was completely outnumbered and outgunned in all domains – sea, air and land – as well as electronic and cyberwarfare.
  • It created its own environment to be able to fight by constructing multilevel underground tunnels that doubled or tripled the size of Gaza.
  • The tunnel network provided two of the three elements needed for combat effectiveness: protection from artillery and air strikes and mobility because the ground lines of communication are still connected.
  • Many Hamas fighters remain, and Israel has killed only one of its three top commanders.
  • If Israel wants to achieve its aim of destroying Hamas, the fight will take a lot longer than the Israeli military expected, and it may not even be possible.

White House says US told Iran it was not involved in Damascus attack

The United States has communicated to Iran that it was not involved in an air raid against a top Iranian military commander in Damascus, the White House said.

“We communicated to Iran that the US had no involvement in the strike that happened in Damascus and we have warned Iran not to use this attack as a pretext to escalate further in the region or to attack US facilities or personnel,” White House press secretary Karine Jean-Pierre told reporters.

Brigadier General Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior commander in the Quds Force of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps (IRGC), and his deputy General Mohammad Hadi Hajriahimi, were killed in the April 1 attack.

Demonstrators in Tel Aviv call for immediate prisoner swap deal with Hamas

There are currently large protests taking place in Tel Aviv with people calling for a prisoner exchange agreement with Hamas.

In videos posted on social media that were verified by Al Jazeera, demonstrators carried banners plastered with pictures of Israeli captives held in the Gaza Strip along with the words “Agree now” as they called on the Israeli government to work harder to come to an agreement in the long stalled negotiations.

A deal that includes the release of Israeli captives in exchange for Palestinian prisoners has been discussed in the ongoing ceasefire negotiations between Israel and Hamas and mediators from Qatar, the US and Egypt.

Hezbollah, Israeli military trade fire

We reported earlier that Hezbollah had claimed “direct attacks” on Israeli positions in the Kfarchouba area near the Israeli-Lebanese border.

The Israeli military now says its fighter jets attacked an observation post and three military buildings belonging to Hezbollah in southern Lebanon.

Al Jazeera’s reporter in southern Lebanon, Ali Hashem, said the Israeli military attacked the Lebanese border town of Naqoura during the day with artillery fire.

Hezbollah in southern Lebanon and the Israeli military have traded fire since October 8, the day after Hamas’s attack on southern Israel and the beginning of Israel’s war on Gaza . In recent months, tensions and fears of a regional conflagration have escalated.

Israeli raid targets central Gaza’s Bureij refugee camp

An Israeli raid has just targeted a residential home in Gaza’s Bureij refugee camp, Al Jazeera’s correspondent reports.

It is among several dense, built-up refugee camps in Gaza, and is near the Nuseirat refugee camp, where the Israeli army says it is currently conducting an “operation” on the outskirts of the camp.

6 killed in Sydney mall stabbing attack

By Sophie Tanno and Tori B. Powell , CNN

Our live coverage has ended. Read up on the latest on the Sydney mall attack or scroll through the posts below.

6 dead in Sydney shopping mall stabbing attack. Here's the latest

Emergency services are seen outside the scene of a stabbing in Sydney, on Saturday, April 13.

Six people are dead  and several others injured after a man went on a stabbing rampage in a shopping mall in Sydney, Australia, on Saturday afternoon local time, one of the country’s worst mass killings in recent years. The suspect was  shot dead .

Eyewitnesses described  “pandemonium”  as they fled from the attack, with many  forced to hide in shops . Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese said the attack was “beyond words and understanding,” but amid the “shocking violence,” there were glimmers of heroism.

Here’s the latest if you are just joining us:

Six dead: New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said  four women and a man died  at the shopping mall, while a fifth woman later died at the hospital. Webb added that  eight additional people  are being treated for injuries at hospitals in Sydney.

Baby among those injured: A  nine-month-old baby is confirmed  to be among the injured and has been in surgery, Webb said. Australian media outlets have reported that the baby’s mother had died, but Webb could not confirm the reports.

Suspect shot: A police inspector shot the attacker dead on the scene. Police believe the suspect was a 40-year-old man who acted alone, but could not provide further identification details. Early indications suggest the attack was  not terror-related .

"Hero" police officer: The police officer who shot the suspect is being hailed as a “hero,” with  Albanese saying , “There is no doubt that she saved lives through her action.” The officer was nearby when the violence unfolded and shot the attacker when he raised his knife at her, police said.

People react outside Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center on Saturday.

Witnesses describe scene: Eyewitnesses described panic and “pandemonium” as fleeing shoppers fell over each other and hid in shops. One woman, Crystal Wang,  told CNN  she hid in a clothing store for over an hour with other shoppers. Another man told Australia’s state broadcaster ABC that the attacker was stabbing people “indiscriminately.”

Rare attack: The attack has shocked Australia, a country where  mass casualty events are rare . The deadliest in its history was an April 1996 mass shooting in the town of Port Arthur, Tasmania, that killed 35 people and became known as the Port Arthur massacre. More recently, at least four people were killed and one injured in a mass shooting in the northern city of Darwin in 2019.

Pope Francis offer prayers for Sydney mall attack victims and first responders

Pope Francis attends Easter Mass at the Vatican, on March 31.

Pope Francis is "deeply saddened" by the mass stabbing that occurred at a busy shopping center in Sydney, Australia, according to a statement from the Vatican.

"He sends the assurance of his spiritual closeness to all affected by this senseless tragedy, especially those who are now mourning the loss of a loved one," the statement read. "He likewise offers his prayers for the dead, injured, as well as the first responders, and invokes upon the nation the divine blessings of consolation and strength."

King Charles III "shocked and horrified" by the Sydney stabbing

King Charles III in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, in November 2023.

Britain's King Charles III, who is head of state in Australia, said he and his wife Queen Camilla are "utterly shocked and horrified" by the shopping mall stabbing in Sydney that left six dead.

"Our hearts go out to the families and loved ones of those who have been so brutally killed during such a senseless attack," a statement from Buckingham Palace said.

"While details of these shocking circumstances are still emerging, our thoughts are also with those who were involved in the response, and we give thanks for the bravery of the first responders and emergency services."

9-month-old baby among victims receiving treatment in hospital

From CNN's Chris Liakos and Sophie Tanno

A nine-month-old baby is confirmed to be among eight victims who have been admitted to hospital following the mass stabbing attack at Sydney's Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall.

New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb on Saturday confirmed that eight people are currently being treated for different injuries in hospitals around Sydney, including the infant, who has been in surgery.

Webb said "the last update I had was that it (the baby) had been in surgery and it's too early to say really. But it's awful."

She could not confirm Australian media reports that the baby's mother had died.

"I've heard that same rumour but I can't confirm that," she said.

Early indications say attack was not terror related, police say

From CNN's Chris Liakos

Police and ambulances are seen outside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall after a stabbing in Sydney on April 13.

New South Wales police commissioner Karen Webb said on Saturday that early indications suggest the Sydney mall stabbing attack is not terror related but cautioned that the investigation remains ongoing.

Webb told reporters that current elements do not point to a terror motive, adding however that the investigation will be ongoing "for many many days" and that it is "too early to say" what was behind the attack.

According to Webb, police believe that the suspect is a 40-year-old man but as background checks remain ongoing, she could not provide further identification details.

Webb said she was "confident" that there is no ongoing risk and that "we are dealing with one person who is now deceased."

The suspect was shot dead at the scene by a lone officer, police earlier said.

Sydney has been left stunned after a mass stabbing at a shopping mall left at least six people dead. Here are some of the latest pictures from the scene.

People are led out from the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping center after multiple people were stabbed in Sydney, on April 13.

"Do not go down there": Witnesses describe scenes of pandemonium in Sydney shopping mall

From CNN"s Sophie Tanno

Witnesses inside the Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall when the attack took place have described scenes of chaos.

CNN’s Australian affiliate, 9 News Sydney, spoke to an eyewitness who said people were running through the shopping center and falling over each other, describing the situation as “pandemonium.”

Two brothers who were there told 9 News they saw a baby and mother stabbed and tried to help.

“The baby got stabbed and the mum got stabbed," one of the brothers said. “We were holding the baby and trying to compress the baby. Same with the mother, trying to compress the blood from stopping.”

One man described seeing a man in a green shirt stabbing others "indiscriminately."

"[We just heard] screaming, screaming and it didn't seem that long before we heard 'boom boom boom' of the gunshot and we thought, 'We hope it's the police,'" the witness told Australia's state broadcaster ABC. "[A person] is dying 10 metres away … I grabbed towels and there were three people dying around me. "It was just carnage."

Another man who did not give his name told ABC that the attacker would have continued his deadly rampage if the police officer had not intervened.

"If she did not shoot him, he would have kept going, he was on the rampage," he said.

Woman hid at back of clothes shop for over an hour during attack

From CNN's Sophie Tanno

One eyewitness who was inside Westfield Bondi Junction shopping mall when the attack unfolded described hiding in the back of a shop.

Crystal Wang explained how, after arriving at Westfield at around 3.20pm – just as the attack began – she walked into a clothes store where "the girls at the shop shut the door behind me and turned off lights."

She continued: "I was really confused, and they told me someone is stabbing people with a knife in the mall. I was hiding at the back of the shop, saw some people fleeing, and then heard [a] few gun shots.”

At first, Crystal thought there had been a power cut, before she realized the severity of the situation she had found herself in.

"A siren went on and not long after, I heard gun shots and started to panic, I was worried the attacker also had a gun," she said. "That's when the shop assistants asked everyone to hide in their storage room."

She added that management announcements probably made the situation worse.

“They were saying 'all the customers please evacuate immediately.' "We were obviously locked inside, just really confused if we should get out of the shop or stay in. "The lady who's making the announcement is obviously panicking as well, which just made us more anxious. She was even swearing at the end of her announcements."

Crystal and other shoppers stayed in hiding for an hour and half, until they were able to leave.

Bonds Get Some Relief From Powell’s Deja-Vu Tone: Markets Wrap

  • Powell says Fed has time to assess data before deciding to cut
  • Stocks struggle to gain much traction as Intel and Disney sink

The bond market rebounded from session lows, with Jerome Powell only reiterating the Federal Reserve ’s wait-and-see approach before policymakers decide to embark on interest-rate cuts.

While the Fed chief didn’t break any major new ground, Wall Street got some relief from his views that recent inflation figures did not “materially change” the overall picture. Powell also reaffirmed that it will likely be appropriate to begin lowering rates “at some point this year.” Equities edged up after a two-day slide, but struggled to pick up much traction amid a drop in a pair of blue chips — Intel Corp. and Walt Disney Co.

Perhaps, but System Preferences IS an Apple product, and I should be able to add an app (in this case Safari) to allow usage of the camera.

Apr 28, 2021 7:23 AM in response to ravelg

Yes the System Preferences IS an Apple product but FaceBook is not.

FaceBook needs to interact with System Preferences that you can then allow the use of the Camera like Adobe and Zoom in there.
