The Only Historic Beachfront Hotel on the Gulf Coast of Texas

History of grand galvez.

In 1786 Bernardo de Galvez surveyed the area, which is where our fully restored property bears its name. In 1900, a hurricane devastated the city, claiming 6,000 to 8,000 lives. Central to the city’s rebuilding was the construction of a 17-foot seawall and causeway to the mainland, With the 1911 opening of Grand Galvez, Galveston, Texas, was reborn as a treasured vacation destination.

$11 Million Centennial Renovations In 2011

Perhaps the most striking is the renewal of the original Peacock Alley, the grand walkway leading from the lobby to the spa and ballroom, a design element not seen at the hotel in over 70 years. During the renovation, original moldings and ceilings were found in the hotel walls that have been restored for the first time since 1962.

Lobby Mosaic

Heralding the hotel’s moniker as “Queen of the Gulf”, the new 43-foot by 7-foot Murano glass mosaic was designed by Grand Galvez owner Mark Wyant and his interior designer wife, Lorenda Wyant, produced by Dallas-based mosaicist Julie Richey and was installed in May 2022 by Ms. Richey and Romeo de Candido of Miami.

Urns On Four Towers

Twelve 4-foot-tall decorative white plaster urns have been placed on the exterior corners of the four towers at the top of Grand Galvez. The tower urns are exact recreations of those originally installed for the 1911 Hotel Galvez opening. The originals were last seen 90 years ago in 1932, possibly disappearing because of that year’s hurricane.

Model T Speedster

Mark Wyant, owner, Grand Galvez, has purchased and restored a 1915 Ford Model T Speedster, considered one of the country’s first sport cars. Modified to go to 50 mph, Mr. Wyant drove the 14-foot-long vehicle from Dallas arriving on June 10, the 111th anniversary of the hotel’s opening. The vehicle has been positioned in the East Loggia, where it permanently resides as part of a historic display.

Marble Fountain

As part of his goal of emphasizing the grand renovations, Mr. Wyant commissioned a landmark Italian marble fountain, which has been produced in Italy for the Center Lawn of the Grand Galvez. Featuring dolphins, griffins and peacocks around a 4-tiered fountain and water display, this magnificent fountain was carved from Calacetta marble and is 16-feet tall by 35 feet wide.

Take a Historic Ghost Tour on Galveston Island – Place of Deadliest Storm in US History

Galveston’s Ghostly History to Draw Thrill Seekers

The season for thrills and chills is quickly approaching and Galveston Island’s ghostly history makes it one of the top destinations in the country for “haunted” travel. From a 110-year-old “haunted” hotel to Galveston’s storied harbor, cemeteries and Victorian mansions, this October the island will be bustling with visitors seeking to be spooked by numerous ghost stories that stem from the country’s deadliest natural disaster and other tragedies.

Galveston has many sites that are considered haunted, including an 1867 building that served as a morgue after the 1900 Storm – still the deadliest storm in U.S. history having killed an estimated 8,000 Galveston residents. The building now houses Haunted Mayfield Manor – a year-round haunted house attraction in downtown Galveston. The haunted house embraces the spooky history of the building’s past while providing guests with a psychologically thrilling experience.

Also embracing its reported haunting is the island’s 110-year-old Grand Galvez, which has been featured on the Travel Channel’s Ghost Stories and on the Discovery Channel’s Ghost Lab for its paranormal significance. The hotel, which offers special ghost tours during October, is said to be haunted by a “Ghost Bride” who reportedly has been seen in room 501 and in the hotel’s west turret. Legend has it that the bride hanged herself in the west turret during the mid-1900s after hearing reports that her fiancé had died at sea. Tragically, her fiancé eventually returned to the hotel looking forward to a marriage that would never be.

The Galveston Historical Foundation, which manages many of the island’s well-preserved historical sites and Victorian mansions, also offers ghost tours throughout October. Many of the island’s historic places have ghost stories attached to them as Galveston has been home to epidemics of disease, war, fires, storms and many merciless pirates, including the infamous Jean Laffite whose lavish and lawless den of thieves was the island’s first European settlement. This year, visitors can enjoy Haunted Harbor Tours in Galveston Bay and Galveston Ghost Stories in the city’s oldest home, the 1838 Menard House.

“Many, many people have lived and died by these waters, and perhaps some of the dead still reside here,” said Dwayne Jones, executive director of the Galveston Historical Foundation. “We invite our guests to listen to the stories and decide for themselves. But you don't have to believe in ghosts to know that the dead are a presence on this island.”

Historic cemeteries are a big draw for visitors seeking the supernatural. Indeed, Galveston has been described as a cemetery with its own beach. Several companies offer tours of the oldest burial places on the island. And there are several tour operators offering haunted tours throughout the island.

An Evening of Revelations at Galveston’s Hotel Galvez

By Dianna Wray September 25, 2019 Published in the October 2019 issue of Houstonia Magazine

galvez tour

The Galvez was built after the Great Storm of 1900.

Image: Courtesy of the Hotel Galvez

We were in the lobby of the Hotel Galvez , waiting to embark upon one of its famous ghost tours. I was sipping a glass of the hotel’s house cab, feeling worldly and oh-so-removed from any nervousness the other guests might be feeling. Instead I busied myself exchanging what I imagined to be impishly skeptical glances with my boyfriend, Aldo, a dedicated scientist who reads skeptics’ blogs daily, only trusts peer-reviewed facts, and is in no way inclined to believe in ghosts.

Soon our tour guide, Melissa Hall, introduced herself, and as she explained how the evening would play out, I was dismayed to realize I was feeling a little anxious. I gulped my wine down and hastily ordered another glass before she led our group of about 20 across the beautiful, historic lobby to a quiet hallway, stopping at the foot of a portrait of Bernardo de Gálvez, the namesake of both the hotel—a six-story circa-1911 confection—and the island itself.

“I’m not going to try to convince you the Galvez is haunted. I’ll leave that up to you,” Melissa said. “But remember to take pictures in threes as we move through the hotel tonight, and to keep an open mind about what you’re seeing. Ghosts resonate differently with people. You may capture something yourselves.”

Aldo glanced at me, raising his eyebrows, and I winked back archly. But as he turned away, I took a large swallow of wine. I hadn’t meant to lie to him when, ahead of our trip, I’d proclaimed that believing in ghosts was ridiculous. After all, at the time, safe inside my own un-haunted apartment, I’d convinced myself it was true.

Yet this too is true: I won’t pick up heads-down pennies, I’d rather walk an extra mile than duck under a ladder, and I never eat oysters on a full moon—yes, I came up with that one on my own. I’ve also seen some strange things out of the corner of my eye when visiting older homes and felt weird pressures around me when going through the closet of a long dead relative.

He didn’t need to know all that, though.

Standing in front of the Galvez painting, Melissa began to explain why so many believe the hotel is haunted. It’s really the story of the island itself: a long, dark tale peopled with cannibals (either the native tribes or the first Spanish explorers, depending on who is telling the story), pirates, soldiers, and the criminal underworld. But the greatest tragedy of all was the Hurricane of 1900, which killed between 6,000 and 12,000 people and remains the deadliest natural disaster in U.S. history.

The city’s remaining fathers constructed the hotel as proof that Galveston had been humbled but not broken, to help the city move on from the loss. But some say it was built atop the graves of hurricane victims, including the bodies of an entire orphanage that had been lost in the storm. After it opened, there were rumors of strange happenings, Melissa told us. Guests reported seeing children in white wandering the halls at night. Others heard childish laughter or felt small hands tug at their blankets as they slept.

As we marched on, Melissa told stories, sharing how a spa employee who’d cleaned the glass doors before locking up only the night before had found tiny handprints on the inside of the glass that morning, and telling us about the time earlier this year when a medium had visited the hotel. She’d tried to help a nun’s spirit cross over but had been rebuffed. The guide pulled up a photo on her iPad that seemed to capture the outline of a woman in a black-and-white habit standing in the back corner.

I nodded solemnly but whispered to Aldo, “I … don’t see it. Do you?” He shook his head and we both chortled, trying not to laugh outright. I was starting to feel more confident. I could do this. The tour was halfway over. There was no need, I thought smugly, to poke fun at what others were taking in with complete seriousness.

Melissa stood close as she shared her next story, about the ghosts in the downstairs bathroom. “Now there is an active spot,” she said, relaying how guests had reported hearing a woman laughing, spotted a man with a shaved head and blank expression lurking in the corners, and noted unexplained shadows in their photos. Guests also reported feeling something—or someone—fiddling with their jewelry, even though there was no one around.

At that I chugged the rest of my wine and, suddenly, felt brave. Well, that, and I needed a restroom. As the rest of the tour made its way into the Music Hall—“the actual spot where the orphans and the nuns who died with them were probably buried”—I squeezed Aldo’s hand, pointed toward the door, and pushed it open.

It was spookier than a hotel lobby toilet had any right to be. The marble and tile echoed with every move I made, the pipes moaning and gurgling. One of the automated toilets flushed even though I was the only one there. Bravery out the window, I felt my heart smacking in my chest as I crept toward a stall. As I slid the bolt shut, I couldn’t shake the feeling I wasn’t alone. Cautiously I opened my eyes and leaned forward so I could look under the other stalls for any ghostly feet.

“If you’re here,” I whispered, “it would, um, be fine if you’d show yourself.”

I sucked in my breath, forcing myself to sit there and listen. And … nothing. No feet appeared, and I didn’t feel anything breathing on me. I began to relax again as I exited and washed my hands. Some photos had shown the baldheaded ghost, who Melissa believed was an apparition of one “Mr. Noble” who had worked at the Galvez back in the 1960s, standing in the corner mirror of the bathroom.

“Hey, Mr. Noble?” I called softly. “Hope you’re having a nice night!”

I dried my hands, pulled out my phone, and, for fun, started taking shots in threes, just as Melissa had instructed. I was still standing in front of the mirrors, scrolling through the images, when it happened. My right earring dropped from my earlobe and bounced across the floor.

I stared at it, frozen on the spot, not daring to lift my eyes or look around the room. Was that the air-conditioning, or was something blowing on my neck? Out of nowhere, one of the toilets flushed yet again for no reason. I emitted a squeak, scooped the earring off the floor, and hustled out of the room and back to the group.

During the end of the tour, I shuddered through stories of the ghost of Room 501 and shivered at tales of the unquiet spirits of Galveston gangsters who still, legend has it, roam the hotel’s halls. I tried not to cling to Aldo too desperately as we made our way back to the lobby.

Afterward we had an excellent three-course meal at the hotel restaurant. We smiled and talked politics while everyone else traded ghost stories, and I took it easy on the water, ensuring I’d avoid the need for another trip to the bathroom. The evening was pleasant enough. It’s hard not to enjoy a perfectly cooked steak.

Still, when we climbed into the king-sized bed later that night and the lights were off, I had to tell him. What would he think after learning that I am, in fact, a Frankenstein villager to my core?

“Aldo!” I whispered. “I have a confession. I do believe in ghosts, and I don’t think I’m going to be able to sleep tonight! A ghost made my earring fall out of my ear in the downstairs bathroom!”

“Okay,” he replied from the darkness. “But you do realize that an earring has fallen out of your ear every hour or so since you put that pair on this morning, right?”

“So that’s not a ghost, that’s wearing earrings that don’t stay in, and gravity.”

“Tell that to Mr. Noble.” But I was already feeling better. “Psst,” I whispered. “Is it not the worst that this guy apparently is in the afterlife and assigned to haunt a bathroom?"

Why Mexico’s Ruling Party Candidate Is Already Dominating the Presidential Race

Claudia Sheinbaum, a protégée of Mexico’s current president, holds a commanding lead in the polls. But to many in Mexico, she is still an enigma.

With Mexico’s presidential election just three months away, one thing is clear: The candidate for the governing party appears to be running away with it.

Claudia Sheinbaum, a physicist and protégée of the current president, holds a commanding lead of about 30 percentage points in the polls over the opposition’s Xóchitl Gálvez, a tech entrepreneur, as campaigning officially starts on Friday.

Playing it safe at a time when the departing president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, remains broadly popular, Ms. Sheinbaum has kept so closely to his policies and persona that she not only vows to adopt his priorities, she also sometimes imitates his slow-paced way of talking in appearances across the country.

But while Ms. Sheinbaum’s exceptionally disciplined campaign has cemented her front-runner status, the candidate who could be Mexico’s first female president remains something of an enigma to many Mexicans.

“Claudia Sheinbaum is still the great mystery of this election,” said Jesús Silva-Herzog Márquez, a political scientist at Mexico’s Monterrey Institute of Technology. “We know she’s a scientist with a different way of thinking. Sooner or later she’ll have to remove her mask showing her as the mimic of López Obrador.”

For now, the race highlights how Mr. López Obrador, a combative politician blending leftist and nationalist rhetoric with policies that are socially, environmentally and fiscally conservative, has so dominated Mexican politics since taking office in 2018 that a splintered opposition is struggling to find its footing against his would-be successor.

The Mexican president stands behind a lectern and in front of a flag.

Ms. Gálvez, a senator with Indigenous roots who represents a coalition of mostly conservative parties, made a splash last year when she entered the race. But she has not gained much traction at a time when Mexico’s economy is benefiting from a shift in manufacturing from China, making Mexico the United States’ top trading partner.

Ms. Sheinbaum, who is a member of Morena, the governing party, and is a former mayor of Mexico City, has steadily emphasized her closeness to the president, who is universally known by his initials, AMLO.

Born to Jewish parents in Mexico City, she became an expert on energy issues after studying physics and energy engineering in Mexico and doing doctoral research at California’s Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory.

Despite Ms. Sheinbaum’s lead, experts say that polls could be misrepresenting voter sentiment and that the race, which culminates in the election on June 2, remains far from over as the candidates spar over their plans for the world’s largest Spanish-speaking country.

“There is a good percentage that’s only now going to start making decisions about which candidate they’re persuaded by,” said Lorena Becerra, a pollster and political analyst.

Ms. Gálvez could not be reached on Thursday, and a spokesman for Ms. Sheinbaum said that for now they would not comment on the voting trends.

But as March begins, Ms. Sheinbaum is backed by 63 percent of people enrolled to vote, according to a tabulation of polls by Oraculus, an organization that standardizes and aggregates the country’s voting surveys. Ms. Gálvez, her main opponent, has 31 percent — or a difference of the equivalent of nearly 20 million votes.

A third presidential candidate, Jorge Álvarez Maynez, who is from the Citizen Movement party and is a progressive politician, has lagged with 5 percent.

“Morena arrives in unbeatable condition,” said Carlos Pérez Ricart, a political scientist at the Center for Research and Teaching in Economics in Mexico City. Reflecting on Mexico’s recent election cycles, he added, “Never has the official candidacy had so much wind at its back as it has now.”

Several factors favor Ms. Sheinbaum and her party; above all, perhaps, are Mr. López Obrador’s high approval rating, which surpass those of any other president in the country’s past four administrations.

Forging a visceral connection with many voters who had felt abandoned by other presidents, Mr. López Obrador has prioritized popular antipoverty programs during his six-year term. (Presidential re-election is prohibited by law in Mexico.)

About 25 million families have benefited from direct cash transfers. The government has increased subsidies to lower fuel prices and electricity bills. And it has developed major infrastructure projects, including an ambitious train line in the Yucatán Peninsula, as a way to develop historically poor regions.

While Ms. Sheinbaum has not played a role in creating these policies, she has pledged to follow Mr. López Obrador’s steps, in large part by consolidating some of his major infrastructure projects, carrying out his austerity measures and keeping his popular social welfare programs.

But unlike her mentor, said Mr. Pérez Ricart, the political scientist, “we can, for sure, expect a candidate who is much more detailed in execution. If it was López Obrador’s charisma that kept his numbers up, she’s going to have to replace that with efficiency.”

There is already some evidence that a Sheinbaum administration could differ from her predecessor’s in some key ways.

When she was mayor of Mexico City, her management of the pandemic differed drastically from the federal government’s response. Ms. Sheinbaum tried to follow the science as Mr. López Obrador downplayed the risks. She has also said that she would focus on renewable energy in contrast to Mr. López Obrador’s prioritization of fossil fuels.

Then there’s the persistent issue of security. He has trusted the armed forces to deal with rising violence; Ms. Sheinbaum vowed to improve the training of the police, increase their salaries and invest in intelligence, measures she put in place while mayor of Mexico City.

Each strategy’s results are in. While reports of extortion and disappearances have shot up across the country , homicides, theft and other crimes in Mexico City have dropped by about 60 percent.

“The differences are in front of us,” Mr. Pérez Ricart added. “She clearly has a different way of governing and has demonstrated that over the last few years.”

Ms. Gálvez has also hinted at some proposals, including allowing private investments to modernize the country’s indebted oil company and promoting renewable energy sources.

She would also create a national investigative police force and reduce the military’s power.

Concerns over security are part of the campaign conversation as Mexico prepares for its largest ever election, with voters choosing national offices all the way down to the municipal level.

Since June, Laboratorio Electoral, an independent research institute focused on democracy and elections, has documented at least 67 attacks, threats, kidnappings and killings related to the elections. At least 39 people have been slain, 19 of them candidates for local positions. A significant portion of the violence is linked to cartels and other criminal groups seeking to influence who holds office.

Looming over the race is the presidential campaigning unfolding in the United States. While President Biden’s re-election would signal continuity, a victory by Donald J. Trump, the Republican front-runner, could upend Mexico’s politics by making the country’s reliance on trade with the United States into a source of vulnerability.

Mr. Trump’s campaign is pursuing a proposal for a universal tariff of 10 percent on imported goods. Such a tariff would “present the next president of Mexico, whomever she is, with a challenge that AMLO and his predecessors didn’t face,” said Andrew Rudman, director of the Mexico Institute at the Washington-based Woodrow Wilson International Center for Scholars.

Mr. López Obrador himself could be another destabilizing factor if his protégé wins the presidency. His plan, as he has claimed multiple times, is to disentangle himself from politics and move to a ranch in Palenque, in the southern state of Chiapas, that his parents left him and his siblings.

Many in Mexico have a hard time believing that Mr. López Obrador could just fade into the sunset.

“A character the size of Andrés Manuel López Obrador, the capacity that he had to mobilize emotions and, with that, make up for many of his government’s shortcomings — well, Claudia Sheinbaum is not going to have that,” said Blanca Heredia, a political analyst. “And it will be difficult not to compare her, especially at the beginning, with him.”

The Moscow Metro Tour is included in most guided tours’ itineraries. Opened in 1935, under Stalin’s regime, the metro was not only meant to solve transport problems, but also was hailed as “a people’s palace”. Every station you will see during your Moscow metro tour looks like a palace room. There are bright paintings, mosaics, stained glass, bronze statues… Our Moscow metro tour includes the most impressive stations best architects and designers worked at - Ploshchad Revolutsii, Mayakovskaya, Komsomolskaya, Kievskaya, Novoslobodskaya and some others.

What is the kremlin in russia?

The guide will not only help you navigate the metro, but will also provide you with fascinating background tales for the images you see and a history of each station.

And there some stories to be told during the Moscow metro tour! The deepest station - Park Pobedy - is 84 metres under the ground with the world longest escalator of 140 meters. Parts of the so-called Metro-2, a secret strategic system of underground tunnels, was used for its construction.

During the Second World War the metro itself became a strategic asset: it was turned into the city's biggest bomb-shelter and one of the stations even became a library. 217 children were born here in 1941-1942! The metro is the most effective means of transport in the capital.

There are almost 200 stations 196 at the moment and trains run every 90 seconds! The guide of your Moscow metro tour can explain to you how to buy tickets and find your way if you plan to get around by yourself.
