Mit den Roaming-Paketen von O2 sorglos in der Schweiz surfen

Pünktlich zum Beginn der Ferienzeit startet Telefónica Deutschland mit drei Roamingangeboten für die Schweiz. Die Pakete mit unterschiedlicher Laufzeit lassen sich zu den O2-Mobile-Tarifen hinzubuchen, sie richten sich an Urlauber, Grenzgänger und Durchreisende.

Roaming Plus 1 Monat mit der Laufzeit von 30 Tagen und der einmaligen Gebühr von 9,99 Euro wendet sich an Urlauber in der Schweiz. Dem Nutzer stehen im Zeitraum von 30 Tagen insgesamt 3 GByte zur Verfügung. Reicht dieses Datenvolumen nicht aus, lässt sich optional weiteres Inklusivvolumen von 1 GByte per SMS-Keyword-Buchung für 4,99 Euro erwerben. Das Paket läuft automatisch nach 30 Tagen aus.

Weiterhin stehen in diesem Roaming-Paket von Telefónica Deutschland 500 Minuten für abgehende Gespräche innerhalb der Schweiz und von dort nach Deutschland zur Verfügung. Roaming Plus bietet zusätzlich 500 Minuten für ankommende Gespräche innerhalb der Schweiz. Es lassen sich 500 SMS innerhalb der Schweiz und nach Deutschland verschicken. Ist das Kontingent von 500 Einheiten bei eingehenden bzw. ausgehenden Gesprächsminuten oder SMS verbraucht, kostet jede weitere Einheit 19 Cent.

Roaming Plus 24 Monate von Telefónica Deutschland steht für einen Zeitraum von zwei Jahren mit einer monatlichen Grundgebühr von 4,99 Euro zur Auswahl. Die Konditionen sind mit dem Angebot für 30 Tage identisch. Mit dem O2-Roaming-Paket für zwei Jahre richtet sich der Netzbetreiber an Grenzbewohner und Pendler in die Schweiz.

Mit dem Tagespaket ohne Kostenfalle durch die Schweiz

Wer sich lediglich auf der Durchreise durch die Schweiz befindet, erhält ein Datenpaket von 300 MB für einen Tag und einmalig 2,99 Euro, die Laufzeit gilt bis 24 Uhr des gebuchten Kalendertages. Nach dem Verbrauch der 300 MB ist für den Rest des Tages keine weitere Datennutzung innerhalb der Schweiz möglich.

Bei diesem Tagespaket kosten abgehende Gespräche 0,54 Euro pro Minute und eingehende Telefonate werden mit 0,26 Euro verrechnet. Eine SMS innerhalb der Schweiz und von dort nach Deutschland kostet 0,39 Euro.

Beim Paket mit der Laufzeit von einem Kalendertag erfolgt eine Aktivierung bei Einwahl ins Schweizer Mobilfunknetz. Zugleich muss der Nutzer Datenroaming und Datenverbrauch auf dem Smartphone aktivieren.

Roaming-Pakete gelten nur für aktuelle O2-Mobile-Tarife

Nach den Angaben von Telefónica Deutschland lassen sich die drei Roaming-Pakete für die Schweiz ausschließlich für die aktuellen O2-Mobile-Tarife buchen, die im April 2023 eingeführt wurden. Die Roaming-Plus-Option ist für Neukunden ab dem 5. Juli 2023 automatisch hinterlegt, wer seinen Tarif vor diesem Stichtag gebucht hat, muss vom bisherigen Roaming Basic (2018) auf das Roaming Plus wechseln.

Schließlich müssen ja jede Menge spannende Urlaubsbilder an die Daheimgebliebenen geschickt werden. Hier und da braucht man auch mal Google Maps um die beste Kneipe in der Nähe zu finden. Das ist auch alles kein Problem in der EU.

Bist Du aber außerhalb der EU unterwegs, dann fallen gern mal hohe Kosten an, die Dir schnell den Auslandsaufenthalt verhageln können. Bestes Beispiel dafür sind die Roaming-Gebühren in der Schweiz .

Der Netzbetreiber o2 hat uns mitgeteilt, dass es jetzt für die Schweiz eigene Roaming-Pakete gibt.

Besonders wichtig: Roaming Plus ist in allen o2-Mobile-Tarifen, die Du ab dem 05.07.2023 gebucht hast, automatisch hinterlegt.
So entgehst Du der Kostenfalle Roaming.
Du hast einen älteren Tarif? Checke vor Deinem Aufenthalt in der Schweiz, ob Du vom Roaming-Basic- in den Roaming-Plus-Tarif wechseln möchtest.
Bevor Du in die Schweiz fährst, solltest Du einen Blick in Dein Kundenkonto werfen, denn es ist möglich, dass der Tagespass Roaming Plus Tag automatisch aktiviert wird, sobald Du Die Grenze überschreitest. Möchtest Du stattdessen lieber das Monats- oder 2-Jahres-Paket buchen, solltest Du das rechtzeitig vornehmen.

Roaming Plus 30 Tage – Das Urlaubspaket

Das Urlaubspaket, wie wir es getauft haben, richtet sich an alle, die in der Schweiz Urlaub machen wollen. Die Vertragslaufzeit ist hier auf 30 Tage begrenzt. Für diesen Zeitraum bezahlst Du eine Gebühr von 9,99 €.

Willst Du während der Laufzeit des Schweiz Roaming-Paketes ins Ausland oder innerhalb der Schweiz telefonieren, so stehen Dir insgesamt 500 Gesprächsminuten zur Verfügung. Das gilt für ausgehende und eingehende Telefonate. Ähnlich ist es bei dem Thema „SMS“. Auch hier kannst Du von 500 Frei-SMS profitieren. Jede weitere SMS und jede weitere Gesprächsminute kosten Dich schließlich 19 Cent.

Besonders spannend dürfte für Dich aber das verfügbare Datenvolumen sein. Dieses Paket ist auf 3 GB Datenvolumen begrenzt. Über ein SMS-Keyword kannst Du Dir allerdings für 4,99 € jeweils 1 GB dazu buchen .

3 GB für knapp unter 10 € sind zwar innerhalb von Deutschland wahrlich kein Kracher. Bei o2 fallen in der Schweiz jedoch Kosten von normalerweise 23 Cent pro Megabyte , also 230 € pro Gigabyte an (!). Die 3 GB würden Dich ohne Schweiz-Paket also mit einem Preis von utopischen 690 € teuer zu stehen kommen.

Roaming Plus 24 Monate -Das Grenzgänger-Paket

Das Thema Roaming nimmt ganz besonders in Grenznähe eine stärkere Bedeutung ein. Es ist mittlerweile für viele Menschen, die in Deutschland nahe der Schweizer Grenze wohnen üblich, zum Arbeiten in die Schweiz zu pendeln. An diese Pendler richtet sich das zweite Roaming Plus-Paket.

Dieses zweite Paket unterscheidet sich gar nicht so viel zu dem Paket für Urlauber. Auch hier stehen Dir 500 Telefon-Minuten und 500 SMS pro Monat frei zur Verfügung. Jede weitere SMS und jede weitere Minute kostet wieder 19 Cent. Auch das Datenvolumen beträgt hier 3 GB und ist gegen einen Aufpreis erweiterbar.

Der Unterschied spiegelt sich in den Kosten und der Laufzeit wieder. Dieses Angebot kostet nämlich nur 4,99 € im Monat und erstreckt sich über eine Laufzeit von 24 Monaten. Alle Menschen, die daher regelmäßig in der Schweiz unterwegs sind, sollten sich dieses Paket genauer anschauen.

Roaming Plus pro Tag – Das Paket für die Durchreise

Wer zum Beispiel auf der Durchreise nach Italien ist, den könnte das letzte Paket interessieren. Dieses Angebot kostet Dich 2,99 € pro Kalendertag . Das heißt, Du hast mit dieser Option maximale Flexibilität .

Im Vergleich zu den anderen beiden Paketen unterscheiden sich hier auch die Leistungen etwas. Du hast hier zum Beispiel keine Freiminuten. Jeder Anruf, den Du in der Schweiz tätigst, kostet dich 54 Cent und jeder Anruf, den Du in der Schweiz erhältst, kostet Dich 26 Cent. Pro SMS fällt eine Gebühr von 39 Cent an.

Einen marginalen Unterschied macht auch die Größe des Datenvolumens. Pro Tag stehen Dir bis 24 Uhr 300 MB zum Surfen zur Verfügung. Sind die 300 MB aber verbraucht, kannst Du nur weitersurfen, wenn Du Dir nochmal 300 MB für 2,99 € sicherst. Das Ganze ist also als Kostenschutz zu verstehen, denn nach wie vor kommt es immer wieder zu immensen Handyrechnungen. Und die EU wollte ja ohnehin mit ihrer Gesetzgebung zum Kostenschutz in der Nähe der Außengrenzen gegensteuern.

Lohnen sich die Schweiz Roaming-Pakete von o2?

Willst Du Dein Handy im Ausland nutzen , dann gilt es einiges zu beachten. Während die Mobilfunknutzung und das Roaming in den EU-Ländern sich als unkompliziert herausstellt, können in Ländern wie der Schweiz hohe Gebühren anfallen . Allerdings gibt es auch Anbieter, wie beispielsweise die Telekom, die die Schweiz in ihr EU-Roaming-Angebot mit einschließen.

Wer als o2 Kunde einen Aufenthalt in der Schweiz plant, sollte sich vorab unbedingt Gedanken über die Mobilfunkkosten machen. Denn im o2 EU-Roaming ist die Schweiz nicht eingeschlossen. Stattdessen werden Telefonate oder die Datennutzung nach Verbrauch abgerechnet. Wer möchte, schafft mit o2 Roaming Plus Kostensicherheit. Wir zeigen, welche Optionen möglich sind.

Roaming Schweiz o2 - die Optionen

o2 Roaming Plus heißt der Roaming Tarif für alle o2 Mobile Tarife. Er bringt zum Fixpreis Freiminuten und Datenvolumen. So sehen die Konditionen aus:

o2 Roaming Schweiz: So umgehen o2 Kunden die Kostenfalle

Obwohl mitten in Europa gelegen ist die Schweiz kein Mitglied der Europäischen Union (EU). Somit gilt dort natürlich nicht die EU-Roaming-Verordnung. Diese bringt innerhalb der gesamten EU das Roam-like-at-home Prinzip; der in Deutschland gebuchte Mobilfunkvertrag kann im gesamten Unions-gebiet wie von zuhause gewohnt genutzt werden. Somit müssen Verbraucher im Urlaub in Sachen Internet & Telefonkosten keine teuren Überraschungen fürchten.

Aber - wie bereits eingangs erwähnt - in der Schweiz gilt das EU-Roaming bei o2 nicht, hier warten andere Konditionen. Schauen wir uns daher die Regelungen bei o2 mal im Detail an: Wer einen der aktuellen o2 Mobile Tarife gebucht hat, nutzt in der Schweiz automatisch die Roaming Plus Option. Telefonate innerhalb der Schweiz und nach Deutschland werden mit 54 ct/min in Rechnung gestellt, für ankommende Gespräche werden 26 ct/min fällig. Wer sich mit dem Smartphone in Andorra, Gibraltar, Isle of Man und der Schweiz (Länderzone 2) ins Internet einwählt, bezahlt 2,99 € pro Kalendertag. Für diesen Preis stellt o2 ein 300 MB großes Datenvolumen bereit. Ist das Datenkontingent aufgebraucht, ist kein Internetzugriff mehr möglich. Die Roaming Plus Option kann aber auf Wunsch erneut aktiviert werden.

Das o2 Roaming Plus Tagespaket aktiviert sich automatisch bei Datennutzung in der Länderzone 2, also in Andorra, Gibraltar, Isle of Man und in der Schweiz. Gilt für Verträge, die ab dem 05.04.2023 abgeschlossen wurden.

Achtung: Bei o2 Alttarifen gelten andere Regeln

Wenn beispielsweise noch ein o2 Free Vertrag genutzt wird, erfolgt keine automatische Umstellung auf o2 Roaming Plus. Hier kann allerdings jederzeit ein Wechsel vollzogen werden. Ansonsten gilt hier noch Roaming Basic (2018), Telefonate werden mit 54 ct/min in Rechnung gestellt, die Datennutzung schlägt mit 23 ct/MB zu Buche. Alternativ kann zum Preis von 1,99 € pro Tag der Travel Day Pack 2018 gebucht werden. Hier stehen dann pro Kalendertag 50 MB Daten zur Verfügung.

o2 Roaming Plus auch im Monats- oder 2-Jahresvertrag erhältlich

Wer sich nur auf der Durchreise befindet, erhält mit dem o2 Roaming Plus Tagespaket ein für die Internetrecherche oder Routenplanung ausreichend großes Datenpaket von 300 MB. Telefonate werden hier aber immer einzeln zum Preis von 54 ct/min abgerechnet, wer unterwegs mit dem Hotel etwas abklären möchte oder noch einen dringenden Anruf nach Deutschland tätigen muss, sammelt schnell Einiges an Telefongebühren an. Und: Auch wenn ein Anruf eingeht, kostet jede Minute 26 Cent. Bei einem 20-minütigen Anruf aus Deutschland kommen so schon 5,20 € zusammen.

Wer sich länger in der Schweiz aufhält, sollte o2 Roaming Plus besser im Monats- oder 2-Jahresvertrag buchen. Dann steigt das Datenvolumen auf 3 GB pro Monat an, zusätzlich sind 500 Freiminuten für Gespräche in die Schweiz und nach Deutschland mit dabei. Und auch für Gespräche aus Deutschland sind 500 Freiminuten inklusive. Zusätzlich legt o2 noch 500 SMS ohne Zusatzkosten obendrauf.

o2 Roaming Plus gibt es für 4,99 €/Monat im 24-Monatsvertrag oder für 9,99 €/Monat in der monatlich kündbaren Variante. Sollte das Datenvolumen nicht ausreichen kann per SMS für 4,99 €/Monat zusätzlich 1 GB freigeschaltet werden. Bitte beachten: Die Aktivierung erfolgt beim o2 Roaming Plus Monats- oder 2-Jahresvertrag immer am nachfolgenden Kalendertag. Also besser schon einen Tag vor Reisebeginn buchen!

o2 Roaming Plus aktivieren: So geht es

Wer ausschließlich die o2 Roaming Plus Tages-Option nutzen möchte, muss nichts weiter tun. Einfach in der Schweiz den Internetbrowser oder die E-Mail App öffnen, mit der ersten Datennutzung wird die Option aktiviert. Soll es dagegen der o2 Roaming Plus Laufzeitvertrag sein, so muss aktiv gebucht werden. Und zwar immer 1 Tag im Voraus, denn die Option wird immer erst am nächsten Tag aktiviert. Gebucht werden kann o2 Roaming Plus über die o2 Internetseite oder über die mein o2 App. Allerdings gilt das nur für o2 Mobile Verträge, die nach dem 05.04.2023 abgeschlossen wurden. Bei Altverträgen gelten abweichende Regeln, die o2 Roaming Plus Buchung sollte aber auch problemlos möglich sein. im Zweifel sollte der o2 Kundenservice kontaktiert werden.

Maximale Kosten in der Schweiz für o2 Kunden auf 59,50 € gedeckelt

Wie oben gezeigt, gibt es mit o2 Roaming Plus beim Telefonieren & Surfen in der Schweiz Kostensicherheit. Wenn die Option aber nicht gebucht wird, können die Gebühren schnell nach oben klettern. Allerdings ist das nicht bis in ungeahnte Höhen möglich, denn zumindest für die Datennutzung können pro Monat dank Kostenschutz nicht mehr als 59,50 € anfallen. Auf Wunsch kann der Kostenschutz deaktiviert werden, aber auch dann dürfen für das mobile Surfen in der Schweiz nur maximal 119 €/Monat in Rechnung gestellt werden. Damit solche Summen aber erst gar nicht auf der Rechnung erscheinen, sollte o2 Roaming Plus gebucht werden. Die mobilen Daten lassen sich im Übrigen auch komplett deaktivieren, dann können während des Aufenthalts in der Schweiz auch keine Kosten entstehen. Wie sehen die Kosten bei o2 für Anrufe in die Schweiz aus?

Wer bei o2 von Deutschland in die Schweiz telefoniert, muss Kosten für ein Gespräch in die Länderzone 2 einkalkulieren. Heißt konkret: Pro Minute werden 39 Cent abgerechnet. Mit Buchung der International Packs können zum Festpreis aber 60 bzw. 120 Freiminuten für Anrufe u.a. in die Schweiz freigeschaltet werden.

Tipp: In der Schweiz über WLAN kostenlos telefonieren

Sofern im Hotel oder der Ferienwohnung ein WLAN Netz zur Verfügung steht, kann darüber natürlich wie gewohnt und ohne o2 Tarifgebühren im Internet gesurft werden. Über Messenger-Dienste wie WhatsApp kann auch ohne weitere Kosten ein Videoanruf nach Hause getätigt werden.

Eine weitere Option stellt WLAN-Telefonie bzw. WiFi-Calling dar. Hier wird die Sprachverbindung über das WLAN Netz in der Schweiz hergestellt. Beim Gespräch gelten aber dann die Inlandskonditionen aus Deutschland. Wer also eine Allnet-Flat für alle deutschen Netze im Mobilfunkvertrag hat, kann über WLAN in der Schweiz kostenlos nach Deutschland telefonieren. Das gilt im Übrigen auch für alle im WLAN ankommenden Gespräche. Wenn allerdings aus dem Schweizer WLAN Netz eine Nummer in der Schweiz angerufen wird, dann wird dies wie ein Anruf aus Deutschland in die Schweiz abgerechnet.

o2 Prepaid Roaming in der Schweiz kostspieliger

Die bisher dargestellten Konditionen gelten in Verbindung mit einem o2 Handyvertrag mit Laufzeit. Für o2 Prepaid sieht die Situation noch einmal ganz anders aus. Hier kann beim Roaming in der Schweiz nicht auf eine Tarif-Option ausgewichen werden. Somit kosten Gespräche immer 54 ct/min (ankommende Anrufe 26 ct/min) und das Surfen im Internet kostet 23 ct/MB. Wer sich hier vor hohen Kosten schützen möchte, sollte sein Handy in der Schweiz besser ausschalten.

Das Besondere an der Tagesflat ist, dass sich diese automatisch aktiviert, sobald sich das Smartphone ins Schweizer Netz einwählt. Außerdem wird die mobile Datennutzung nach Verbrauch der 300 MB gesperrt, so dass bis auf den Optionspreis von 2,99 € pro Kalendertag keine unbemerkte Gebühren durch die mobile Datennutzung anfallen.

Gesprächsminuten innerhalb der Schweiz sowie nach Deutschland kosten dann 54 Cent pro Minute. Eingehende Gespräche werden mit 26 Cent die Minute berechnet. Eine SMS kostet 39 Cent.

Voraussetzung für die automatische Aktivierung der Dayflat ist ein o2 Mobile Tarif, der nach dem 5. Juli 2023 gebucht wurde. Hier ist die DayFlat automaisch aktiviert. Kunden mit älteren Tarifen können jedoch jederzeit einen Wechsel der Roaming-Option vornehmen. Hierbei wird das bisherigen Roaming Basic (2018) deaktiviert und auf das Roaming Plus gewechselt. Ihr seid O2-Kunde und wollt verreisen? Dann solltet ihr euch vorab einmal über die Roaming-Optionen des Netzbetreibers informieren. So vermeidet ihr unangenehme Kostenfallen im Urlaub. Habt ihr es versäumt, euch vor der Reise zu informieren, ist dies kein Problem. In der Regel könnt ihr alle hier aufgeführten Optionen auch noch nachträglich am Urlaubsort über die MeinO2-App oder per SMS buchen. Doch welche Optionen stehen euch bei O2 auf Reisen zur Verfügung?

Roaming innerhalb der EU

O2 bietet für das Roaming in der EU mehrere Optionen. In allen aktuellen O2 Free-Tarifen automatisch eingestellt ist die Auslandsoption "Roaming Basic". Hierbei handelt es sich um den " EU-Roaming-Tarif (Roam-like-at-home) " von O2, der euch erlaubt eure im Inland enthaltenen Vertragsleistungen auch im EU-Ausland in Anspruch zu nehmen.

Telefonate nach Deutschland und innerhalb des Landes sowie SMS kosten euch demnach genau so viel, wie daheim. Zudem könnt ihr euer inkludiertes Datenvolumen auch im Ausland nutzen. Der Roaming Basic-Tarif greift jedoch nur innerhalb der EU. Haltet ihr euch beispielsweise in der Schweiz auf, müsst ihr dagegen mit Zusaztkosten rechnen. Wie hoch diese ausfallen, hängt von eurem Reiseziel ab. Dazu aber später mehr.

Mit dem EU Day Pack und der EU-Roaming-Flat bietet O2 noch zwei weitere Roaming-Optionen für die EU an. Sie können aber nur von Inhabern älterer Verträge gebucht werden und sind nicht mehr mit den aktuellen O2 Free-Tarifen kompatibel. Das EU Day Paket kostet pro Tag 2,99 Euro und gilt ebenfalls nur in der EU, die Konditionen sind im Vergleich zum Tarif "Roaming Basic" aber deutlich schlechter. Das Day Pack enthält nur 25 Freiminuten und 25 Frei-SMS sowie 50 Megabyte Datenvolumen. Überschreitet ihr die Freigrenze, müsst ihr pro Minute 20 Cent für abgehende und 0,01 Cent für eingehende Anrufe zahlen, zusätzliche SMS kosten pro Nachricht 7 Cent und weitere 50 Megabyte Datenvolumen 1,99 Euro.

Etwas attraktiver ist dagegen die EU-Roaming Flat für 4,99 Euro monatlich. Sie enthält eine Flat für Telefonate innerhalb des Reiselandes und in alle deutschen Netze. Zudem stehen euch 1 Gigabyte Datenvolumen zur Verfügung. SMS kosten je nach Reiseland zwischen 7 und 9 Cent. Die EU-Roaming Flat von O2 gilt nicht nur in EU-Ländern, sondern auch in der Schweiz. Eine Buchung kann sich also lohnen, wenn ihr euch hier häufiger aufhaltet und noch einen älteren O2-Vertrag nutzt. Generell empfehlen wir O2-Kunden für Reisen ins EU-Ausland jedoch die Option "Roaming Basic" zu nutzen. Wer einen älteren Vertrag besitzt, kann diese kostenlos buchen. Bei neuen Verträgen ist sie wie bereits erwähnt automatisch aktiv.

Roaming außerhalb der EU

Reist ihr in ein Nicht-EU-Land, fallen bei O2 Roaming-Kosten an. Wie hoch diese ausfallen, ist vom Reiseland abhängig. Der Netzbetreiber teilt die Welt in insgesamt vier Zonen. Weltzone 1 entspricht dabei der EU. Einen Überblick über die Weltzonen bei O2 findet ihr nachfolgend:

Hinweis: Besitzt ihr einen älteren O2-Tarif (vor 2018) ist für die Nutzung des Internets in der Weltzone 3 und 4 die Buchung des Data Pack World verpflichtend.

Wie ihr seht, wird die Handy-Nutzung außerhalb der EU für O2-Kunden schnell zu einer Kostenfalle. Die hohen Roaming-Gebühren könnt ihr durch das Buchen einiger zusätzlicher Optionen jedoch eindämmen. Folgende Pakete stehen für Fernreisen zur Auswahl:

Das Data Pack World gilt für 24 Stunden und enthält 50 Megabyte Datenvolumen. Es kann noch vor Ort per SMS mit dem Text WORLD an die 80112 gebucht werden. Mit einem Preis von 4,99 Euro ist das Paket aber vergleichsweise teuer, zumal nicht verbrauchtes Datenvolumen verfällt und ihr nach 24 Stunden erneut ein Paket buchen müsst. Wer unterwegs nicht permanent auf das Internet angewiesen ist, sollte besser das Hotel-WLAN oder offene WLAN-Netze an der Strecke anzapfen oder sich eine lokale SIM-Karte kaufen.

Damit ihr nach eurer Urlaubsreise nicht von hohen Kosten überrascht werdet, solltet ihr euer Daten-Roaming im Blick behalten. Wir zeigen euch, wie ihr diese aktivieren und deaktivieren könnt.

Schaltet ihr auf eurem iPhone oder iPad das Datenroaming ein oder aus, könnt ihr innerhalb der EU kostenlos surfen und vermeidet in fernen Ländern hohe Kosten.

Laut O2 ist das Data Pack World in der Weltzone 3 oder 4 verpflichtend, um ins mobile Internet zu gehen. Andernfalls wird die Internetverbindung deaktiviert. Wir raten euch jedoch, sicherheitshalber Datenroaming selbst in den Handy-Einstellungen zu deaktivieren oder das mobile Internet sicherheitshalber gleich ganz abzuschalten. So vermeidet ihr ungewollte Kosten.

In der Weltzone 2 ist die Buchung des Data Pack World nicht verpflichtend, ihr könnt auch pro Verbrauch zahlen. Kosten für das Surfen werden jedoch nur bis zu einem Betrag von 59,50 pro Abrechnungszeitraum in Rechnung gestellt. Überschreitet euer Datenverbrauch 250 Megabyte, wird die Internetgeschwindigkeit auf 32 Kilobit pro Sekunde gesenkt, ab 260 Megabyte Verbrauch surft ihr gar nur noch mit 2 Kilobit pro Sekunde.

Die bislang genannten Preise und Optionen gelten nur für O2-Vertragskunden. Für Prepaid-Nutzer gelten abweichende Konditionen, die ihr der nachfolgenden Tabelle entnehmen könnt.

In der Weltzone 3 und 4 greift bei der Datennutzung ebenfalls ein Kostenairbag. Es werden euch maximal 59,50 Euro pro Abrechnungszeitraum zur Verfügung gestellt. Dies entspricht einer Datennutzung von 5 Megabyte. Weitere Optionen für Prepaid-Nutzer listet O2 auf seiner Webseite nicht. Wir empfehlen euch daher den Kauf einer lokalen SIM-Karte vor Ort.

O2 weist auf seiner Webseite darauf hin, dass die genannten Roaming-Gebühren abweichen können, wenn ihr auf euer Reise euer Handy auf einem Schiff, einer Fähre oder in einem Flugzeug nutzt . In diesem Fall baut euer Handy mitunter nämlich keine Verbindung zum herkömmlichen Mobilfunknetz auf, sondern nutzt ein spezielles Satellitensystem, bei dem deutlich höhere Kosten anfallen - vor allem für die mobile Datennutzung. 100 Kilobyte kosten hier mitunter bereits 2,50 Euro. O2 Travel International Roaming Review: Countries, Speeds & Fair Usage

On O2, you can use your mobile phone abroad at no extra cost in up to 75 destinations, depending on your price plan.

The countries in which you’re able to use the O2 Travel offer depends on the price plan you have. On O2’s Pay As You Go plans, you’ll have access to international roaming at no extra cost in 43 European destinations. This increases to 48 destinations on Pay Monthly plans, and to 75 destinations on Pay Monthly Plus (and on regular Pay Monthly plans if you’re living in a Virgin Media household ).

In this article, we’ll review the O2 Travel offer including the countries where you’re able to use it and how much it will cost. We’ll also look at data speeds when abroad, the fair usage policy on O2 Travel and alternative roaming offers from other networks. Finally, we’ll look at how you can keep your current phone number if you’re moving to O2 to take advantage of their O2 Travel offer.

What is O2 Travel?

On most O2 price plans, it’s possible to use your mobile phone abroad when travelling to other countries. The destinations that are included within the O2 Travel offer depend on the type of price plan you have:

For customers with an O2 mobile broadband plan , the O2 Travel offer isn’t currently available. This is because international roaming is not available on O2’s mobile broadband service.

O2 Europe Zone Countries

The following destinations are part of O2’s European roaming zone (locations marked with a † are only available on Pay Monthly plans) :

Czech Republic
French Guiana
Isle of Man†
Liechtenstein
Netherlands
Saint Barthelemy
Saint Martin
Switzerland†
Vatican City

† If you’re an O2 Pay As You Go customer, inclusive roaming is not available in 5 European destinations (Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco and Switzerland). Instead, you’ll need to pay £1.99/day for up to 100MB of data in these countries.

Within Europe, you’re able to use your inclusive minutes and texts to contact any other number within O2’s Europe Zone. Your usage of European roaming is subject to the fair usage policy described here : the most important being that it should only be used “for periodic travel, like holidays or short breaks”. If you use your mobile phone abroad for 63 days or more in any four-month period, O2 reserves the right to apply a regulated surcharge to your usage (currently 3.3p/minute, 1p/text and £3.50/GB).

You’ll be able to use up to 25GB data per month when abroad (or less if your normal UK data allowance is less than 25GB).

On O2’s Pay As You Go plans including Big Bundles , roaming is not included in Guernsey, the Isle of Man, Jersey, Monaco or Switzerland. In these places, you can pay £1.99/day for 100MB of data.

O2 Travel Inclusive Zone Countries

Within O2’s Travel Inclusive Zone countries, you’ll get unlimited minutes, texts and data when abroad in the following destinations:

El Salvador
New Zealand
United States

There’s traffic management applied when you’re abroad, so your download speeds could be slowed down, depending on your usage.

You can use the £6 per day O2 Travel offer in all of the following destinations:

British Virgin Islands
Cayman Islands

El Salvador*
Madagascar*
Netherlands Antilles
New Zealand*

* This country is also part of the O2 Travel Inclusive Zone offer. If your tariff includes this offer, you won’t need to pay the £4.99/day charge.

To opt-in to the O2 Travel offer, text TRAVEL to 23336. It can take up to 24 hours for O2 Travel to be enabled on your account so it’s best to opt-in before departing on your trip. To opt-out of the offer and to pay O2’s standard international roaming rates instead, text NOTRAVEL to 23336.

The £6 per day O2 Travel offer isn’t available to customers on O2 Pay As You Go .

Roaming Speeds

According to their terms and conditions , there’s now a download speed limit of 2Mbps when you’re travelling abroad in other countries. This has applied from June 2022.

The 2Mbps speed limit should be enough for most day-to-day use such as browsing the web, sending messages and using social media. It’s also enough for things like maps and for listening to music. If you’re streaming online video, it should be possible to stream in standard-definition. However, it won’t be possible to stream in HD quality.

Fair Usage Policy

O2 has a fair usage policy for their O2 Travel international roaming service. The fair usage policy depends on whether you’re travelling to another European country or to a country outside of Europe.

Within Europe

According to O2’s terms and conditions , a surcharge may be applied for your usage if you spend more 63 days abroad in Europe over a rolling 4-month period. If you exceed the 63-day limit, O2 should give you the opportunity to demonstrate prevailing use in the UK. They should also give you two weeks notice before a surcharge is applied at a rate of 3.3p/minute, 1p/text and £4.50/GB of data.

Outside Europe

The download speeds available for file transfer, online gaming, peer-to-peer downloads and network backup services is restricted. According to O2, these services “may not work with O2 Travel”.
Audio and video streaming optimisation are in use. This may reduce the quality of your streaming content when abroad.
The use of tethering and personal hotspot is not permitted in O2 Travel countries. This means you’re unable to share your data connection with other devices.
When using O2 Travel outside Europe, your SIM card can only be used inside a smartphone.

Keeping Your Phone Number

If you’re joining O2 to take advantage of their O2 Travel offer, it’s a straightforward process to keep your current phone number .

To do so, ask your current mobile network to provide you with a PAC Code . You can get this through your mobile network’s website or app, or by texting PAC to 65075.

Once you’ve received the PAC Code from your old network, order your new mobile phone or SIM card from the O2 website. When it arrives, you can provide the PAC Code to O2 by submitting it through this online form . Your phone number transfer will then be scheduled by O2, normally for the next working day.

O2 takes on Three ‘Feel at Home’ with cheap roaming in 27 more countries

Stepping up its fight with Three, O2 has announced that it’s adding 27 more countries to its list of destinations you’ll be able to use your phone without receiving any additional charges.

The additions bring the total number of countries you can roam to to 75, including the 48 countries O2 originally offered access to as part of its ‘O2 Europe Zone’.

This 75 total is four more than what’s offered in Three’s competing ‘Feel at Home’ package, which currently covers 71 international destinations.

However, while Three’s service gives you exactly the same allowances as your regular pay monthly plan (which is especially good for those lucky enough to still have unlimited data), O2’s service limits you to 120 minutes and 120 texts a day. O2 has confirmed to us that there’s no upper limit on the amount of data you can use.

You can gain access to the roaming allowance by ensuring that your plan includes the ‘O2 Travel’ bolt-on, which is included with certain O2 Refresh tariffs and can otherwise be added separately.

A more flexible tariff

In addition to the increase in roaming destinations, O2 is also introducing a range of flexible tariffs, which will allow you to change your allowances on a month-to-month basis.

So the next time a Pokémon Go-style craze sweeps the nation, the small amount of data included in your regular plan shouldn’t prevent you from taking part in all the mayhem.

At a minimum you’ll have to stick on each tariff for a month, but that’s still a large increase in flexibility compared to what O2 previously offered.

Between these developments and Three’s roaming plans, it’s great to see competition between mobile operators leading to some really useful services. We’ll be interested to see how Vodafone and EE respond to the offers.

O2 verändert Roaming-Bedingungen: Neue Tarife für die Schweiz

Gleich drei neue Roaming -Optionen hat O2 für seine Kunden ab sofort im Angebot. Sie richten sich an alle O2-Kunden, die mit einem O2 Mobile-Vertrag unterwegs sind und Berührungspunkte zur Schweiz haben. Da die Schweiz nicht der EU-Regulierung unterliegt, gilt hier auch nicht das Roam-like-at-home-Prinzip. In der restlichen EU sowie in Norwegen gelten deine deutschen Konditionen mit wenigen Einschränkungen auch im Ausland. In der Schweiz nicht. Während die Telekom aus freien Stücken das Roaming in der Schweiz dennoch abrechnet, wie ein EU-Gespräch, hat man sich bei O2 nun zur Einführung neuer Optionen entschieden.

Drei neue Optionen für O2-Schweiz-Roaming

Dabei richtet sich O2 an drei verschiedene Zielgruppen mit unterschiedlichen Bedürfnissen an ihr Roaming-Verhalten. Denn während der Urlauber in der Schweiz seinen Tarif in der Regel nur vorübergehend benötigt, ist des beim Pendler und Bewohner der Grenzregion ein dauerhaftes Bedürfnis, auch in der Schweiz zu vernünftigen Konditionen kommunizieren zu können. Wer indes nur auf der Durchreise ist, hat nochmals andere Interessen. Damit sind auch die drei Tarife grob umrissen.

Für den mehrtägigen Aufenthalt in der Schweiz kannst du eine Option für 9,99 Euro mit nur einem Monat Laufzeit buchen. Du bekommst 3 GB Datenvolumen, jedes weitere GB kannst du für 4,99 Euro nachbuchen. Bis zu 500 abgehende und 500 ankommende Gesprächsminuten sind enthalten, jede weitere kostet 19 Cent. Gleiches gilt für 500 SMS. Das Paket endet nach 30 Tagen automatisch.

Bist du Schweiz-Pendler – dabei soll es sich um mehr als 60.000 Personen im Jahr 2020 gehandelt haben – kannst du eine dauerhafte Option buchen. Sie kostet 4,99 Euro monatlich, hat eine Laufzeit von zwei Jahren und entspricht ansonsten den Konditionen des Paketes für Urlauber. Beide Tarife müssen ausdrücklich gebucht werden.

Für alle, die seit 5. Juli 2023 einen O2-Mobile-Vertrag gebucht haben oder noch buchen werden, ist ab sofort ein neuer Standard-Tarif für die Schweiz hinterlegt. Er aktiviert sich bei der Einwahl ins Schweizer Handynetz und der Nutzung mobiler Daten. Für 2,99 Euro pro Kalendertag gibt es 300 MB, nach Verbrauch dieses Volumens ist keine Datenübertragung mehr möglich oder es müssen weitere 2,99 Euro für 300 MB investiert werden. Gespräche innerhalb der Schweiz und nach Deutschland kosten 54 Cent pro Minute, ankommende Gespräche 26 Cent pro Minute und SMS 39 Cent. Hast du einen älteren Vertrag, kannst du deinen bisherigen Standard-Roaming-Tarif über den Kundenservice wechseln.

Hier fehlt eine extrem wichtige Information im Text: Die Schweiz Pakete gelten ausschließlich mit dem neuen Tarifportfolio „Mobile“. Für Altverträge (die die meisten Kunden haben) gibt es diese Pakete nicht!

Egal ob es VF oder t-mobil war .. in der Vergangenheit war es einfach besser das Handy in der Schweiz auszuschalten. Und auch die neuen O2-Tarife sind nicht der Hit. Noch besser , Schweiz ganz meiden.

ich bin beruflich öfter mal in der Schweiz und wollte dauerhaft Travel Day Pack (2018) in meinem Free L Tarif aktivieren. Gleichzeitig wird dann aber Roaming Basic (2018) deaktiviert. Bedeutet das, dass im Travel Day Pack (2018) die günstigen EU Roamingsgebühren dann nicht mehr gültig sind? Oder muss man jedes Mal wenn man in die Schweiz fährt auf Travel Day Pack (2018) umstellen, was natürlich mühsam ist.

Eigentlich sollte O2 doch ein Paket für EU und Schweiz zusammen anbieten.

Surfoption in Weltzone 2 (Schweiz) 50 MB/1,99 € pro Kalendertag inkl. (Zahlung nur bei Nutzung)

Spannender ist Großbritannien, das es inzwischen auch in WZ2 ist … Oder Gibraltar!? Ich bin mir nicht sicher, ob die Seiten aktuell sind.

Noch ein ergänzender Hinweis:

Das Travel Day Pack (2018) kann man ohne Nutzung quasi immer drin lassen, da ohne Aufenthalt in WZ2 keine Kosten anfallen. Für mich ist es für Bodensee-Urlaube auch eher ein Kostenschutz. Alternativ gibt es noch

EU Roaming Pack Data 1 GB 4,99€ monatlich

das bei wissentlicher Überschreitung der WZ2 (Schweiz, Gibraltar, Monaco usw.) ein besseres Preis-/Leistungsverhältnis hat. Dumm nur, das man damit auch WZ1 auf gesamt 1GB reduziert.

Bedeutet das, dass im Travel Day Pack (2018) die günstigen EU Roamingsgebühren dann nicht mehr gültig sind?

Ich grüble auch grad über diesem Thema. Darf ich nochmal die konkrete Frage des Thread-Starters aufgreifen, ob bei Buchung des Travel Day Packs die normalen EU Roamingkonditionen (roam like home) trotzdem weiter gelten? Anders gefragt: Kann ich weiterhin zu gewohnten Konditionen in der EU telefonieren und surfen, wenn ich wegen gelegentlicher Schweiz-Transits das Travel Day Pack buche? Oder muss ich dann noch was bedenken?

Das Lesen der Pack-Beschreibung sollte es bereits beantworten.

Dieser geht spezifisch auf die Frage zum Travel day pack ein, welches Du drüben erwähnt hattest und das ich vorher nicht kannte Muss ich mich wirklich verteidigen, dass ich fragen stelle, die für mich als o2 Einsteiger relevant sind, bevor ich mich entscheide? Genau das verlangt ihr doch in anderen threads, dass sich die Leute vorher informieren!

Different daypacks do different things so you need to consider what you want yours to do. Will it need to carry tech? Is packability and minimal weight a priority? Should it be able to flex in volume and adjust to larger or smaller loads? Do you need lots of organization? Should it suit outdoor hikes, urban use or both? Does it need to look good for work and play or attach to wheeled luggage? It’s a lot to consider, but carry needs can differ greatly from one trip to the next and you’ll want to be prepared. However, here are a few things to think about that could help you narrow down suitable packs.

Weight and durability

Ideally, a travel daypack should be lightweight (you don’t want it eating into your precious baggage weight allowance). And if you want durability to match, then we suggest looking into fabrics like Dyneema or X-Pac . They’re both lightweight and durable, but come with a heightened price tag too.

If you’re looking for something lightweight but more affordable, this usually involves sacrifices in durability. The more durable a pack is, the heavier it tends to be. And while lighter packs can help you shed packing weight, they might not hold up as well to demanding use. If you’re sticking to fairly relaxed sightseeing, this likely won’t be a problem. If you’re planning to venture into rugged terrain or put your daypack through its paces, you might want to consider taking a weight hit with fabrics like Cordura and ballistic nylon .

This depends very much on your personal carry requirements. Your daypack should be suitably sized to carry whatever essentials you need for the day. Perhaps that’s a wallet, phone and small camera. Alternatively it could be an outer layer, lunch, maps and other trail hiking supplies. Ideally, whatever option you go for, try to get a pack that’s compact enough to use with a range of transport (such as fitting under a plane seat, to wear while cycling, or easy enough to stow in a taxi or on a bus or train). That way, you won’t be restricted to particular transport options while venturing out and about. Also think about designs that can pack up compactly into a pouch or lay flat in your luggage until needed.

A daypack is your go-to bag for carrying all the essentials you need for the day. So it should offer suitable comfort depending on your load and setting. The heavier the load, the more built-in comfort you’ll want from your daypack. If you’ll be carrying it non-stop for long periods of time (such as on a day hike), you’ll want a comfortable harness, a ventilated back panel and a sternum strap to help stabilize the load (potentially a hip belt too depending on your gear setup). If you have a fairly casual day of sightseeing planned, with the potential to set the bag down throughout the day, then you can get away with less comfort if you want to prioritize other features such as light weight or packability.

Organization

Organization will again depend on your load and preferences. If you’re carrying a lot of gear, in particular smaller items, you’ll likely find it more convenient if a variety of pockets are on hand to store gear securely while keeping it accessible. If you’re carrying tech you’ll want to look for padded, protective storage. And even if you’re running with a minimal setup, quick-access pockets are still useful for keeping items like a water bottle, phone or wallet easily accessible. Plus don’t forget you can create your own organization with pouches and organizers , so if you find a daypack you love that just falls a little short in the organization department, don’t fret. It’s an easy fix.

The nature of your trip will help guide your choice when it comes to daypack aesthetics. If you need the pack to blend into more formal settings (such as on work trips ), opt for clean silhouettes and subdued colorways like navy, gray or black for a more professional appearance. Fabrics will also play a role here, with some materials able to transition between urban and outdoor environments and work or play, while others are better suited to one or the other. Additionally, some packs look more touristy than others, so if you want to avoid drawing attention to yourself, try to avoid bright colors and prominent branding. However, if they speak to your personality and you don’t need a pack for formal settings, there’s no reason you can’t rock that color pop if you really want to.

Versatility

How versatile do you need your daypack to be? Will you be sticking to urban environments, venturing only in outdoor terrain, or perhaps criss-crossing between settings on one trip? Consider where you’ll be using your pack and what it needs to carry before choosing one that will meet your needs sufficiently. But what if you’re struggling to find a daypack that will cover all of your travel needs all the time? Here’s the thing, you probably won’t ever find that pack. Unless you’re restricted to a particular type of travel, you’ll likely find your carry needs and travel needs changing. So you may want to choose more than one daypack to suit different needs. Do we suggest buying ten? Nope, that’s probably overkill. But a couple of options won’t hurt.

Now that you’ve got a few considerations to mull over, let’s take a closer look at different types of daypacks that might be right for you.

Traditional daypacks

Traditional daypacks are your fully featured options. Think the kind of pack you’d use as an EDC bag. They’re more comfortable than lighter, pared-back options and are better for hauling heavier loads. However, not all traditional daypacks are ideal for travel and you may struggle to find ones that pack down compactly. If you are planning to use one as a travel daypack, it should be able to pack flat in your luggage or serve as a personal item that can be carried onto a plane.

Packable daypacks

As the name suggests, packable daypacks prioritize packability. They tend to be ultralight bags that take up hardly any space in your larger bag or luggage. However, this space-saving design often means they’re stripped down and very minimal. In general, you won’t get a whole lot of features here. You also might need to get creative with your packing if you’re carrying hard or pointy objects (these often lacking structure or significant padding). And because they tend to use thinner materials for better packability, they’re not as durable as more bulky but tougher options out there.

Alternatively you might want to go with a combo backpack and daypack option that allows you to combine a larger backpack with a smaller detachable daypack. The benefit of this setup is all-in-one carry and increased volume for larger loads, yet it’s easy enough to separate the daypack for use as your personal carry-on item or as your destination day bag. Just make sure to check your airline luggage restrictions to ensure your chosen combo fits within the limits. And of course, carrying both bags on your back will be more strenuous than for example pairing a daypack with wheeled luggage. Though a pack-only combination may work better if you’re traveling over rough terrain or encountering a lot of stairs. Again, consider your trip and whether this option is best for you.
