Olympus Launches The EyeTrek INSIGHT EI-10 Smart Glasses for Business Applications

Drawing on its long history in the development of smart glasses technology, Olympus America Inc. announced the launch of the EyeTrek INSIGHT EI-10 Smart Glasses in the United States .

The patented optical system in the EyeTrek INSIGHT EI-10 enables users to see its display without blocking eyesight and easily access information whenever needed without interfering with their activities.

Within its lightweight and compact form factor, the EI-10 incorporates both wireless LAN and Bluetooth ® technology for wireless connection to a network or to peripheral devices. The EI-10’s long battery life and hot swap capabilities allow for extended use in a variety of demanding business settings.

The EI-10 is equipped with an attachment mechanism that allows it to be easily mounted to safety glasses or prescription glasses, so it can be used in a variety of environments with varying safety requirements and business use cases. Embedded sensors allow for easy navigation of the user interface and applications, which include photo and video capture and playback, QR code reader, and utility functions for custom developed applications.

Eye-Trek Video Goggles: The Big TV on My Nose

Lcd screens fited into the goggles are supposed to simulate a 52-inch tv display.

The first thing you learn when powering on the Eye-Trek is who should not use them. A warning message shoos away people with seizure disorders, high blood pressure, heart conditions, visual field disorders and everyone under the age of 16, whose visual systems are still forming. Eye-Trek glasses offer private video entertainment

Outside of the PowerBook G4, one of the coolest gadgets this reporter has seen in the past while is undoubtedly the Eye-Trek from Olympus. It’s a peripheral you wear like a pair of eyeglasses, except it displays a video image inside. Surprisingly, the Eye-Trek is reasonably affordable, too.

If you’re already familiar with Sony’s Glasstron Personal Theater System, then you’ll be familiar with the Eye-Trek. In fact, if you’re a regular first-class passenger on overseas Japan Airlines (JAL) flights, you might already have seen these puppies in action. The glasses rest on your nose and ears just like a pair of eyeglasses, except the front is equipped with two LCD panels that display a video image. The Eye-Trek incorporates temple attachments that hold a pair of ear-bud headphones that can be removed and placed in the user’s ears.

An engineer we spoke with at Macworld Expo explained that the Eye-Trek is really most suitable for use with entertainment hardware like portable DVD players, video game systems, and other similar devices. The Eye-Trek is designed optimally to display NTSC video rather than the fine detail of computer images, but the engineer assured us that it would work if you have an S-Video equipped PowerBook. So if you’ve a PowerBook you’re hankering to play big screen-style DVDs or games on, this could be your ticket.

Olympus says that the Eye-Trek FMD-150W provides a picture equivalence of looking at a 62-inch TV from about 6 1/2 feet. It certainly fills one’s field of vision, that’s for sure. The units weigh approximately four ounces, which makes them heavier than the average pair of eyeglasses. They’re bulkier, too, so you can feel the weight on your face a bit more, and the controller unit itself adds a few more ounces. The price for all this gadgetry? About US$799.

The FMD-200 is a budget-priced model that sports a lower resolution (180,000 pixels per LCD versus 240,000 on the 150). It’s fixed at a 4:3 aspect ratio, and provides the picture equivalency of a 52-inch television screen at 6 1/2 feet. The FMD-200 lacks the 150’s surround sound capabilities, but at $499, it’s definitely more oriented for users on a budget. This bookends the price of the two Eye-Trek models against Sony’s suggested retail price for its $699 Glasstron product, which offers some comparable features.

Normally an AC adapter plug powers the Eye-Trek, but if you’re on the road and you’re hankering to watch a video or play a game in the privacy of your own Eye-Trek, you can run the glasses off an optional battery as well.

As cool as these gadgets are, they are not without practical limitations. The resolution alone will give computer users pause. Consider, for example, that a lowly 640×480 computer display offers up a total of 307,200 pixels (compared with the FMD-150W’s 240,000 pixels), and you can see that even the high-end Olympus unit is relatively low-res compared with a CRT or a PowerBook LCD display. And although lightweight, the Eye-Treks are bound to cause some neck fatigue and eyestrain after a while, too, especially if you’re not used to wearing heavy glasses. Obviously, the Eye-Trek isn’t for everyone: If you have vision problems, Rapid Eye Motion Disorder, or if you’re under 16 years of age, this product definitely isn’t for you.

Olympus also says that there’s an Eye-Trek designed specifically for PC use at SVGA resolutions, as well. The unit is currently limited to distribution in Japan and carries a much higher price than the two units Olympus is now selling abroad.

NEWS WATCH; Pasting Eyeballs to Screen With a Wearable Television

Olympus America's Eye-Trek personal television display looks nothing like a television but very much like the Visor glasses worn by Geordi La Forge, the blind crew member played by LeVar Burton on ''Star Trek, the Next Generation.''

This gadget positions an L.C.D. television screen in front of each eye, for a visual effect the company compares to watching a 62-inch screen from a distance of six and a half feet. At $899, this wearable television monitor costs nearly as much as a big-screen one. But the earphones are powered by a surround-sound stereo processor with augmented bass, giving the overall illusion of watching a complete high-end home theater -- except that it weighs less than four ounces and can be held in the palm of your hand.

Despite its compact size, the Eye-Trek display is full of features. In addition to standard controls for brightness, contrast, tint and color, the on-screen menu offers adjustments for white balance and sharpness, and four display settings: standard, wide angle, zoom and cinema. The last choice gives the illusion of theater-screen widths to movies viewed in the letterbox format. Two users can save individual video preferences, and the device can be worn over standard eyeglasses.

Parental ad-visor-y This "bargain" version of the more expensive Eye-Trek models is strictly a PlayStation 2-friendly device. And lest you think this is a child's plaything, a warning will quickly clue you in: "This product may interfere with development of a child's eyes and visual system. Password protection is provided to prevent children under 16 from using this display unit." Well, so much for little Jimmy's Christmas gift.

The Bottom Line

Before conniptions commenced, we carefully inspected the hard-plastic molded, well-built unit. In sleek black, the visor has small headphones slotted into the arms, as do the other Eye-Trek models. And while it is still pricey, this set of specs at least looks as if it can take some punishment. The visor itself attaches to the PlayStation 2 through the A/V port and is powered via a USB cord, so you have only a small bramble of wires to contend with. The downside to this is that you can use these goggles with only a PlayStation 2. If you want to plug into any other video source, stop reading right now and check out Olympus's FMD-200 or FMD-700 models instead.

A new vision for television But what about the promised simulated-52-inch television floating six feet away? You can toggle between a 4:3 aspect ratio and a letterboxed mode. After a little fiddling, we finally booted up a game disc and settled back to enjoy an excellent, sharp LCD game of Gran Turismo 3, before watching Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon. We oohed at the exceptionally crisp, color-accurate image, which is on a par with that of a Sony WEGA when used with an S-Video connection. We aahed at how convincing the optical illusion created by the tiny, twin LCDs was. Rather than the skewed doubles images that we were expecting, it really did look like a big TV screen. And we "u-huh urked" at the weird sensation of being able to see the real world immediately below us when 80 percent of our vision was occupied by a giant goggle box. This creates a dizzying feeling when you move your head; the television stays put and the room moves. A word of advice: buy the optional blinders or a motion sickness bag--the choice is yours.

But the LCD screen does have its limitations. The pixels themselves are visible in textures at times, showing up as dot artifacts that linger behind. When watching Crouching Tiger, we experienced a slight blurring of images during the particularly busy fight scenes. Overall, though, we had minimal gripes for a portable television three inches from our eyes.

Unfortunately, the audio playback isn't nearly as pristine. The tiny, attached ear-bud headphones built into the frame are uncomfortable and do only a passable job of providing audio. Sounds were muddy, dialogue was indistinct, and there was too much hiss when we turned up the volume.

What a turn-off Despite warnings of possible neurological damage, our testing continued. Then after 2.5 hours, the Eye-Trek flashed a short message that stated, "2 Hrs, 30 Min. have elapsed. For the Health of your eyes and body, stop viewing and rest. If you continue viewing, power will shut off in 5 minutes." We pressed on with testing--damn the consequences. Sure enough, the Eye-Trek shut down.

All said and done, this entertaining health risk manages to deliver a virtual home-theater experience of a sort. It's as if you are being occasionally stricken with a headache and motion sickness while sitting on the couch watching your big-screen TV. Because of that, its $400 price tag, and the single-minded functionality (it works only with a PS2), we find it difficult to recommend the Olympus Eye-Trek FMD-20P.

Summary [ ]

The red alert klaxon wails on the bridge of the Enterprise as Lieutenant Commander Data reports that they're losing containment in the starboard nacelle tube . Captain Picard orders more power to the field coils , and asks Lt. Commander La Forge for a report, which the chief engineer replies that someone has locked out the plasma injector controls and they cannot be shut down. The venting system engages as the Enterprise begins to vent plasma from the nacelle.

Commander Riker and Lieutenant Worf race to the control room of the nacelle tube via a ladder in the Jefferies tube while Picard takes precautionary measures and orders the exterior hull plate released so they may jettison the warp core . When both Riker and Worf arrive, they find Lieutenant Daniel Kwan on the catwalk staring at the plasma stream . Lieutenant Nara is at her station, unable to shut down the plasma flow. She warns both officers that if they approach Kwan, she fears he'll jump through the force field and into the stream.

" I… know what I have to do. " " Dan, no! "

Worf goes to try to circumvent the override Kwan placed on the injectors while Riker slowly moves towards him and tries to talk him down from the catwalk. Kwan oddly remarks about people laughing at him, and that he does not want to do what he is about to. Riker assures him that they'll talk about it but Kwan warns him to stay away. Worf gets control back, but there is still active plasma in the tube and it will take time to dissipate. Nearly desperate to buy the time, Riker tries to distract Kwan by getting him to explain his problem, but he calmly replies by saying, " I know what I have to do. " Kwan then jumps into the plasma stream and kills himself, shocking Worf and Nara, with Riker slamming his hand against the bulkhead, visibly upset.

Act One [ ]

In the ready room , a visibly angry Riker explains to Picard and Counselor Troi that he could have saved Kwan's life if he had just a few more seconds, but Worf tells him he did everything he could and it was not his fault. Riker also notes something strange about the encounter: Kwan didn't seem to recognize him, even though he saw him the other day while he supervised the tube refit , and felt fine and pleased when Riker complimented him on getting the refit done faster than expected. Troi notes she met with him during crew evaluations six months earlier and that he was looking forward to being assigned to the nacelle tube. Riker adds that Kwan was a good officer with a fine career ahead of him and is dumbfounded. Picard notes that in his career as a Starfleet captain, he has notified the parents of fallen officers, but never one lost to suicide before. The captain wants to offer an explanation to Kwan's parents and authorizes Worf and Troi to look into Kwan's personal logs in order to find out what happened.

La Forge, in engineering, calls in to Picard on the damage. The Enterprise needs to get urgently needed medical supplies to Barson II , and due to their unexpected delays, Starfleet has given them the green light to exceed warp limitations to do so. ( TNG : " Force of Nature ") Once the call ends, Data starts a conversation about suicide, wondering why any lifeform would do it. Hearing La Forge's guess that sometimes one's life is too hard to live, he relates to his own experiences in forming more and more complex pathways in his neural net during his first months after his activation. He considered simply shutting himself off to try again because it was becoming harder and harder to incorporate those pathways into his existing neural net . He said he finally decided against the procedure, considering it a challenge to overcome rather than an obstacle to avoid. La Forge commends Data and wished that Kwan had dealt with his problems the same way as Data did.

After seeing Kwan's personal logs, Troi and Worf see no evidence of hardship in his life. That morning, he mentioned recently completing work on the nacelle tube refit the night before, and after pulling two double shifts in a row, he was looking forward to spending time with Ensign Maddy Calloway , his girlfriend. Calloway says that Kwan was pretty much happy and easygoing. She also says that Kwan didn't seem like the kind of person that would take his own life. Worf and Troi had already agreed earlier that Kwan didn't seem the type to commit suicide.

Troi decides that it is time to see nacelle control. She questions Nara, but she doesn't have any clues as to his state of mind. After Nara leaves for a few moments, Troi examines his workstation, then climbs to the platform where he died. Suddenly she is overwhelmed by a strong empathic impression, almost going over the catwalk.

Act Two [ ]

After being examined in sickbay by Doctor Crusher , Counselor Troi is told to wait a few hours before returning to the nacelle tube, as she is detecting elevated psilosynine levels in the counselor. It is hard to see how Troi got an impression from an empty room. She decides to go back with Worf later.

Meanwhile, the Enterprise has arrived at Starbase 328 and obtained the medical equipment they need to take to Barson II.

Worf goes to Troi in her quarters to continue the discussion. She doesn't find anything more from Kwan's logs, so they talk about the possibility that she felt something from nothing. She relates hearing her grandfather's stories to her telepathically as a child and, Worf, his visions. At the same time, Worf, from his experience in the alternate reality where he was married to Troi, begins to think about starting a relationship with her. He politely leaves Troi and goes to Ten Forward , where Riker is having Til'amin froths with Lieutenant Corell . Worf indirectly asks the first officer if it would be alright for him to date someone he had been close to. Riker says that it wouldn't be his choice. Then, Worf asks if there is anyone who Riker prefer he not date on the ship. Riker laughs and says that Worf is beginning to sound like he's asking him if he can date his (Riker's) sister. Worf realizes he's becoming suspicious with the hints and leaves quickly.

The empathic impression

Later, Troi returns to the nacelle tube with Worf. Climbing up to the maintenance door, she asks him to open it for her; he can, but only for 90 seconds as after that the plasma venting system will engage, to prevent degradation of the force field. Troi assures that she just wants to take a quick look, though she's not sure what she's looking for. This time, she has visions. First, a woman backing up to a bulkhead, pleading for her life, then, a man staring intently. She can tell it is in the cell where the plasma stream is held. Suddenly, she finds that Worf is gone, and she is alone. The plasma stream is not active, now. In fact, there are construction lights since the ship is inactive. On the ground, a box is labeled with "Utopia Planitia." She calls out to Worf.

Act Three [ ]

The man and woman

Troi gets down the ladder and back to the door. She then interrupts a man and a woman kissing, then laughing at her when they notice her. She turns around and bumps into Worf, as now the room is back to normal. After the vision, Worf and Troi call the senior staff to the observation lounge to discuss. It's clear that she was seeing some kind of scene eight years ago through someone's eyes. Crusher assumes that because Kwan was half- Napean that he may have gotten the same vision as Troi. Since the Napeans are also telepathic , it is a possibility. Troi doesn't recognize the couple, but may recognize the man who stared at her. Crusher also tells Troi that she may be able to give her an inhibitor in order to manage the emotions she was feeling during the experience.

While waiting sixteen hours for the inhibitor to be synthesized by Dr. Crusher, Troi goes over the computer logs to see if anybody else aboard the Enterprise had worked with Kwan in at Utopia Planitia when nacelle control was under construction. In the logs, she sees the man from her vision: Lieutenant Walter Pierce . Troi and Worf decide to question Pierce in engineering about if he remembers anything about Kwan or anything strange happening during the building of the Enterprise . Pierce, however, doesn't tell Troi and Worf much of anything. Troi can't tell if Pierce is lying or what Pierce is really feeling, but thinks he is holding something back.

Worf escorts Troi to her quarters as she remarks about how she couldn't read him. When gathering more logs seems to take some time, Worf says that maybe they should start earlier the next morning. Worf then says good night, but doesn't leave. Worf takes Troi's hand, touching her hand to his face, then sniffing her hand. Worf then embraces Troi in a long, passionate kiss.

Act Four [ ]

The next morning Worf is still in Troi's quarters, making breakfast . Crusher summons both of them at the same time to sickbay , Troi for her inhibitor and Worf to supervise the transport of medical supplies to the cargo bay for Barson II . They walk in at different times, not revealing their relationship. However, Troi silently notices the way Worf acts toward Ensign Calloway as she leaves.

The interior of the nacelle

Troi goes back to the control room with La Forge, Data and Lieutenant Nara. Troi notices a bulkhead that was previously open in her vision, and Nara mentions that Kwan was working there the day before he died. After La Forge removes it, he detects Human DNA . Troi gets another vision of the woman being attacked. La Forge's device reveals a skeleton. Back in sickbay, Ensign Calloway sequences the DNA sample and matches it to Starfleet records and finds Marla Finn . Troi confirms she was indeed the woman in her vision. Suspicious, she says that something doesn't match up and pulls up Lieutenant Kwan's service record. She realizes that it could not have been Kwan's eyes she was seeing through as he wasn't posted to the Enterprise until about six months after Finn's death. It must have been either of the men in the vision. She realizes that it was Lieutenant Pierce's eyes she was seeing through when she sees her reflection in the computer panel. Troi finally understands that Pierce must somehow have telepathic abilities since she could not read his emotions before and because she also sees him in the visions.

Troi and Worf head to ask Pierce some questions. On the way, Troi asks him if he is sorry for having been with her, thinking about his behavior toward Calloway. Worf says no, he doesn't and asks what's wrong. With the inhibitor, Troi admits she isn't feeling herself. Worf decides to question him alone and she goes to her quarters, where Worf promises to meet with her later. However, shortly after she arrives, Pierce shows up unannounced.

Act Five [ ]

Troi immediately calls for security, and security officers Kellogg and Garvey arrive. Confused, Pierce says that Worf told him to go to her. When she can't find Worf using the computer, Troi asks him where Worf is and then asks the computer, which reveals that he is with Ensign Calloway. Pierce is taken away while Troi goes and finds Worf and Ensign Calloway in a kissing embrace. The two start to laugh at her, just like in her earlier vision. She is outraged and responds by shooting Worf dead with a phaser . Distraught, she runs outside, running into Lieutenant Pierce on the way who tells her, " You know what you have to do. " Compelled, she then runs to through the corridors to nacelle control.

Alone, she gets to the nacelle tubes, walks up to the catwalk and stares into the plasma saying, " I know what I have to do, " just like Kwan had. Just as she is about to jump into the plasma, Worf grabs her by the shoulder, whereupon it is revealed that her uniform has changed. The preceding events (from the end of act two to here) were a hallucination. Seeing that Worf is alive and well, she hugs him in relief.

The investigation ends with Troi telling Picard in the observation lounge that she is in disbelief that all she experienced had been within the span of a few seconds: Worf had only just opened the maintenance door, then turned back to find Troi standing too close to the force field. Data confirms the identities of Pierce, Finn, and her secret lover William Hodges , and that Pierce was part Betazoid , as his maternal grandmother was from Betazed . Officially, they all were killed in an accidental plasma discharge eight years ago and their bodies were never found. Troi believes that Pierce had found his girlfriend Finn in the embrace of Hodges and killed them in a jealous rage, threw their bodies into the plasma stream to cover up any hint of murder, and then jumped in himself. La Forge enters after scanning behind the panel that Troi had directed him to, and while there weren't any bone fragments like that in her hallucination, he did find traces of cellular residue with a psionic signature. Troi theorizes that when Pierce hit the plasma stream, the subspace energy present imprinted his empathic pattern into the residue, a 'psychic photograph ' as La Forge puts it. This triggered the hallucination and caused Troi's mind to take elements of her own life to create a situation that mirrored Pierce's situation. If Worf hadn't been present, she certainly would have met the same fate as Kwan.

After everyone exits onto the bridge, Worf asks Troi why she seemed surprised to see him alive when he pulled her from her hallucination. Troi replies that in her version of the vision, Worf was killed. Worf inquires who had killed him, and Troi simply replies, " Hell hath no fury like a woman scorned. "

Google Glass to Get Challenger in Olympus EyeTrek INSIGHT

Move over Google Glass, a new challenger to the non-existent smart glasses throne is in town: Introducing the Olympus EyeTrek INSIGHT featuring a 2.4 megapixel camera.

Mainly known for their amazing lines of cameras and lenses, Japanese optics titan Olympus Corporation is making a play for Google Glass’s niche market space.

A concept that mirrors the Google Glass product in form but not entirely in execution, a device that failed in the consumer market but has since found renewed life in industrial and commercial applications, the Olympus EyeTrek INSIGHT is much more modular in practice than Google Glass.

Olympus claims the EyeTrek “is the latest in enterprise solution optics, an innovative approach to a variety of business applications” with multiple innovations that will make it the “ultimate wearable tool for warehouse logistics, industrial field maintenance, and more.”

Olympus EyeTrek INSIGHT allows for use with either the glasses that accompany the product or will clip onto most other safety or commercial glasses available on the market and used in industrial applications.

The EyeTrek will be powered by an Android operating system and will be capable of capturing photos and video in resolutions of 1992×1216 pixels and will be able to display images on the 640×400 OLED display.

Because the EyeTrek is an Android-based device, customized applications can be developed for it.

The product also has Wi-Fi and Bluetooth capabilities, multi-3-axis sensors (accelerometer, gyro, and magnetic field), 1GB RAM, 8GB ROM, a 16-bit monaural microphone, a Micro-B USB port, a compact and lightweight (66g/2.33oz with battery) design, and a battery life of one half hour to an hour.

The EyeTrek can be controlled through an interface that uses a swipe or tap on the Touch Sensor Bar included with the glasses. An optional El-HS1 headset microphone accessory will be available for purchase to enable voice command.

Olympus will bring the EI-10 to market this month (November 2017) at a cost of $USD 1,500.

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order. 

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.
