How to use plugs from United Kingdom in Nepal

Plugs, sockets, adapters and other information needed for travelling from United Kingdom to Nepal in this page. If you want a report for other countries, re-start the wizard to find to electric adapters for your trip here .

Quick Chart at-a-glance

If you are electrical savvy, perhaps the previous chart is all you need. If this is not the case, you can continue reading and discover what the chart is saying!

Plugs and Sockets at each country

In United Kingdom the following plugs are used: (includes London, Bath, Oxford, Cambridge, Brighton.)

Considerations for the United Kingdom

It is likely you will only find plugs-type "G" in the UK. Plugs type "D" and "M" are considered "old" and not common. They are are still used nowadays to differentiate low-power lighting circuits. So please don't try to use an adapter on them for high-power equipments like hair-dryer or even battery chargers. We keep "D" and "M" plugs in our database as we don't know your exact destination and you might find one next to a bed table. As a rule of thumb , you will probably be fine with the type "G" in hotels and big cities.

... and in Nepal you will use: (includes Kathmandu, Pokhara, Bhaktapur, Patan, Bandipur, Janakpur, Tansen (Palpa).)

Exact voltage

Perfect! This is very good! You will not need any sort of voltage adapter (they are always big, heavy and they can't handle too much energy. i.e. might have problems with hairdryers). You can plug your devices to the electric network grid in Nepal without requiring a voltage adapter.

Some connectors are used in both countries

You will be able to plug the devices directly in Nepal (please read other sections of this reports in regards to voltage, etc.). Perhaps you will need adapters for some sockets, but it is usually easier to find adapters at destination if your plug is already being used in the country. Sometimes different cities uses different systems, you might need to do a bit more of research. If you find more information please let us know.

Lists of adapters you can use in your travel:

Adapter: generic

This adapter allows you to use plugs type: A, B, C, D, E, F, G, H, I, J, K, L, N into outlets type: M.

This adapter is extremely generic without loose terminal and finger protection, it does have earth pass-though which is a good thing; but it will not have a good grip because it support so many different plug types in only three generic slots; we don't recommend this adapter unless no better alternative can be found. i.e. a more expensive one.

This adapter allows you to use plugs type: A, B, D, G, I, M into outlets type: C, E, F, L.

This adapter has a safety protection so you don't plug only one terminal into the adapter while touching the other with your finger, because it is generic, when you buy it pay attention to this safety mechanism. Overall a good adapter that has the earth connection pass-though (notice the metallic connector on the side.)

Adapters you can buy

You can buy the following multi-purpose adapters from Amazon. Please also take a look at the recommended gadgets for your trip.

Travel Adaptor for Nepal

Nepal travel adaptors.

Whilst planning your trip to Nepal it’s important to research to make sure you pack all the essentials before you get on the plane to start exploring.

Nepal travel adaptors: which type do I need?

You will need to consider what to pack, to ensure you can use your personal electrical appliances safely whilst abroad. This normally includes the use of a  travel adaptor , which is a device that simply allows you to plug any UK electrical appliance into a foreign electrical socket. It is important to note that it does not convert the voltage or frequency.

For Nepal there are three associated plug types, types C, D and M. Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins, plug type D is the plug which has three round pins in a triangular pattern and plug type M has three round pins. Nepal operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

Voltage converters and transformers

Electricity supplies worldwide can vary from anything between 100V and 240V. It can be extremely dangerous to use an electrical appliance that is rated at a voltage different from the supply.

As voltage can differ from country to country, you may need to use a voltage converter or transformer whilst in Nepal. If the frequency is different, the normal operation of an electrical appliance may also be affected. For example, a 50Hz clock may run faster on a 60Hz electricity supply.  Most voltage converters and transformers come supplied with plug adaptors, so you may not need to buy a separate travel adaptor.

All converters and transformers will have a maximum power rating (AMPS or WATTS) so make sure that any appliance you intend to use does not exceed this rating.

Dual voltage rated appliance

You can determine whether you’ll need to use a converter or transformer, by looking at the appliance rating plate.

A dual voltage rated appliance will display for example ‘INPUT: 110-240V’ on the body of the appliance or its power supply. This means that you will not need a converter or transformer but just a travel adaptor, because Nepal operates on a 230V supply voltage, which is within the 110-240V range that the dual voltage appliance operates on.

Single voltage rated appliances

In Nepal the supply voltage is 230V. If the appliance is a single voltage rated appliance, it will need to operate at the same voltage as the supply voltage of the country i.e. 230V. If this is not the case it should be used alongside a voltage transformer or converter to allow the appliance to work safely and properly.

Converters and transformers perform a similar function, but their applications differ. Converters are typically used with appliances that operate for a short duration (1-2hours), whilst most transformers can be used alongside appliances that operate continuously.

It’s important to understand that some travel adaptors are not suitable for any appliances that require an earth connection. These types of travel adaptors should only be used with double insulated equipment, which will be clearly marked with the symbol shown below.

Double -insulated -symbol

We recommend you check your appliances before embarking on your journey, to understand the requirements in Nepal.

Nepal Travel Adapters

You will need to consider what to pack, to ensure you can use your personal electrical appliances safely while you are abroad. This normally includes the use of a travel adapter, which is a device that simply allows you to plug any US electrical appliance into a foreign electrical socket. It is important to note that it does not convert the voltage or frequency.

General Information: Nepal

For Nepal, there are three associated plug types: type C, type D, and type M.

  • Plug type C is the plug which has two round pins
  • Plug type D has three large round pins in a triangular pattern
  • Plug type M has three round pins in a triangular pattern and looks similar to the type D plug, but its pins are much larger.

Nepal operates on a 230V supply voltage and 50Hz.

Power plugs and sockets

In Nepal the power sockets used are of type C, type D, and type M.  Use the photo below to help identify the right plug and socket.

Plug Type C

Plug adapters are the interfaces between the American flat-pronged plug and Nepal’s two round-prong socket. These allow you to plug your electrical device into the Nepal wall socket, but they do not convert the electricity to the American 110 volts . If your appliance is designed to run only on 110-120 volts, you are likely to see smoke, if not fire, from this potent miss-mating. You will need a step-down voltage converter to safely step the voltage down from 220 to 110.

Voltage and frequency

You can use your electric appliances in Nepal, if the standard voltage in your country is in between 220 – 240 volts. Manufacturers take these small deviations into account. If the standard voltage in your country is in the range of 100-120 volts, you need a voltage converter in Nepal.  (In the US, electricity comes out of the wall socket at 110 volts, alternating at 60 cycles per second.)

SOKOO 230-Watt Step Down 100-220V to 110V Voltage Converter, International Power Converter/Travel Adapter- Use for EU/UK/AU/US/India More Than 150 Countries, USB Quick Charger 3.0 Grey

If the frequency in Nepal (50 Hz) differs from the one in your country, it is not advised to use your appliances. But if there is no voltage difference, you could (at your own risk) try to use the appliance for a short time. Be especially careful with moving, rotating and time related appliances like clocks, shavers and electric fan heaters.

To be sure, check the label on the appliance. Some appliances never need a converter. If the label states ‘INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz’ the appliance can be used in all countries in the world. Devices like this include most laptops and phones, most recently produced battery chargers, and many small, electrical gadgets, especially those designed for world travel.

What You Should Know About Nepal’s Electrical Voltage and Adapters

What You Should Know About Nepal's Electrical Voltage and Adapters

Last Updated on December 18, 2022 by Alpha Adventure Treks

In order to use your personal electrical appliances properly while traveling, you will need to think about what to carry. This typically entails the utilization of a trip adaptor, a tool that enables the easy insertion of any electrical item into a foreign electrical socket. It’s vital to remember that neither the frequency nor the voltage are converted. There are three plug kinds that are related to Nepal: types C, D, and M. Plug type C is a plug with two round pins, plug type D is a plug with three round pins arranged in a triangle, and plug type M is a plug with three round pins. Nepal uses 230V and 50Hz for its operating voltage.

Types of Plugs in Nepal

It contains the three different plug types—Type C, Type D, and Type M—in the context of Nepal.

  • Type C= two pin
  • Type D= three round pins in a triangular pattern
  • Type M= three round pins

What voltage and frequency in Nepal?

The standard voltage and frequency in Nepal are 230 V and 50 Hz, respectively. If your country’s normal voltage is between 220 and 240 V, you can use your electric appliances in Nepal (as is in the UK, Europe, Australia and most of Asia and Africa). These minor variations are taken into account by manufacturers. You need a voltage converter in Nepal if the standard voltage in your nation is between 100 V and 127 V (as it is in the US, Canada, and the majority of South American countries). Voltage converters are available on Amazon. A voltage converter and power plug adapter combo is another option. It is not advisable to use your appliances if the frequency in Nepal (50 Hz) differs from the one in your country. However, you could (at your own risk) attempt to operate the appliance for a brief period of time if there is no voltage differential. Verify the appliance’s label to be certain. A converter is not necessary for all appliances. Anywhere in the world can use the appliance if the label reads “INPUT: 100-240V, 50/60 Hz.” This is typical for chargers for tablets, computers, cameras, phones, toothbrushes, and other devices.

Voltage converters and transformers

Globally, there are many different types of electricity available, ranging from 100V to 240V. Using an electrical appliance that is rated for a voltage different from the supply might be exceedingly harmful. While in Nepal, you might need to utilize a voltage converter or transformer because voltage might vary from one country to the next. The regular operation of an electrical item could potentially be impacted by a changed frequency. For instance, a 50Hz clock might operate more quickly on a 60Hz power source. You might not need to purchase a separate travel adaptor because the majority of voltage converters and transformers come with plug adaptors already installed. Make sure that any appliance you plan to use does not exceed the maximum power rating (in AMPS or WATTS) that all converters and transformers have.

Nepal’s access to electricity

After Brazil, Nepal has the second-richest water resource base. It is brave enough to produce the 83,000 MW of hydropower. Although it has produced a little amount of hydroelectricity (a few thousand MW), it has good facilities for power in most areas. The availability of electricity is relatively common in popular trekking areas like Annapurna and Everest, but it may not be present in less popular areas like the Manaslu and Kanchenjunga region, where hikers must carry prepared bags.

Electrical adapters for Nepal: Travel Power Strips

Able to run multiple devices and appliances simultaneously on a single Nepali power outlet. For devices with smaller wattages, some models enable voltage dialogue (for example cameras). Therefore, if an electrical equipment isn’t dual voltage, a travel power strip will still allow it to function in Nepal, making it a portable and less expensive alternative to a power converter. The majority of contemporary travel power strips come with several USB connections. Voltage from power outlets in some places may fluctuate, and a power surge can harm fragile equipment. To prevent your gadget from being overpowered, certain models come with a surge protector.

Will a solar charger work in Nepal?

Although it would take some time to charge, Nepal’s sunshine may be ideal for a solar power bank. It may be annoying to constantly unpack a solar power bank and wait for it to recharge in sunny periods because of how little surface area they have and how long they must be maintained in strong sunlight to supply enough power for a single charge cycle.

A solar backpack’s larger, more robust solar cells allow it to produce more electricity more quickly and can even produce some power in cloudy conditions.

When it’s sunny in Nepal, phones put straight into a solar backpack’s USB port will gradually recharge the battery. However, if the phone is going to be used regularly, it could be uncomfortable to leave it connected to the bag all the time. In contrast to a small solar power bank that needs to be unpacked and facing the sun, a backpack with solar cells is continually exposed to sunshine and may thus be used to charge a power bank during the day.

A bag that is appropriate for Nepal should be able to generate at least 6 watts of energy, have solar cells with an efficiency of at least 22%, and feature a power bank with a capacity of 10,000mAH or more.

Does Nepal have power outages?

Power outages are recorded in some areas of Nepal on a regular basis; given this high degree of unpredictability, travelers are recommended to make the necessary preparations.

What is the best USB charger for Nepal?

For people traveling from all over the world who want to charge their gadgets through USB, a 4 port USB travel charger is the most portable option; however, for those who also want to utilize their domestic plugs, the following power adapters offer bulkier but more flexible options. For travelers visiting areas with unstable power supplies, surge protection is essential to prevent harm to any connected appliances from voltage spikes. All three power converters provide this protection. These power converters have interchangeable type C, I, and G connectors that work in over 150 countries and regions, including Europe, North America, Australia, the United Kingdom, Japan, and China

The best travel adapter: Hyleton Worldwide Travel Adapter

1. Hyleton Worldwide Travel Adapter

Specifications, reasons to buy, reasons to avoid.

If you have permanently positioned yourself into the world of USB-C, this is the travel adaptor for you. Although it has four standard USB slots that can each refuel a tablet, smartphone and other low-power gadgets, the Hyleton also has a USB-C slot fitted to the side for fast-charging a smartphone.

Elsewhere this compact adaptor's multi-function plug fits more than 150 countries with UK/AU/US plugs. The adapter also has built-in safety shutters to protect you from the direct touch of the live parts on the socket outlet. I was huge fan of this adaptor, and have often found myself reaching for it when packing for a trip.

2. MyTravelPal Worldwide Universal 10A Travel Adapter

There are a couple of reasons why this universal adaptor from MyTravelPal stands out. The first is that it claims to be the safest travel adapter in the world – it's one of the very few all-in-one travel adapters that has passed the very strict regulatory standard BS:8546. MyTravelPal's 4 plugs have a ground/earth connection, an essential safety feature for many electrical appliances, meaning you can use this adapter with high powered electricals such as computers, curling tongs, hairdryers, laptops, phones, etc without worry.

There's also a push-button resetting fuse, which means you don't need to carry spare fuses with you or rush out to buy replacements when you're on holiday. MyTravelPal's protection system ensures that it will automatically shut down if it detects any abnormal usage. It's a great product that won't let you down whilst keeping you safe.

Again, this is a decent quality charger that comes in at a great price, though it only comes with 2 USB ports instead of 4. There’s a universal socket and it’s fitted with USA, Australian, UK and European plugs for use in over 150 countries.

Thanks to the embedded micro USB cable, my phone and tablet benefitted from fast charging, which was great for work trips. With safety features, including fire proof materials, protection against power surges and a safety plug lock, this is another great all-rounder that should do the job nicely.

The best versatile travel adaptor

Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit

4. Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit

This is an excellent choice if you're a frequent traveller, especially if you jet set between one place and another. As it has six attachments, 2 USA outlets, 2 USB-A slots and a built-in USB-C cable, it's suitable for most electronic devices, giving you versatility to what you bring with you on your trip.

I found it to be extremely lightweight and fast charging, which made it my first choice on two of my recent trips. I also liked the way it came with a travel pouch, meaning I was able to keep track of the attachments when visiting one or more countries.

Unfortunately, the Ceptics World Travel Adapter Kit is only compatible with dual voltage products. This means it's perfect for phones and laptops, but won't work with 110V items such as hair clippers, hair dryers and hair straighteners. I found this slightly frustrating, but it's a common feature so it didn't affect my opinion too much. It should also be noted that the set doesn't include adapter plug for South Africa, so read below's listing if you're looking for one of those.

The best travel adaptor for South Africa

Skross World To South Africa Travel Adapter

5. Skross World To South Africa Travel Adapter

If you're going to Africa, you're going to need to get to know the Type-M socket. Never heard of it? Unfortunately almost all so-called 'universal travel adapter' are nothing of the sort because they don't include large parts of Africa and Asia, where an archaic UK plug now called Type-M is still used.

As well as being standard in South Africa, Namibia, Namibia, Botswana, Mozambique, Lesotho and Swaziland, Type-M is common in Nepal and Bhutan, too. Cue this simple, but essential travel adapter that converts from every other plug in the world –such as the US, UK, Europe, Australia, China and Brazil – to the Type-M. This Switzerland-made example from Skross doesn't convert voltage, but it does work with power-hungry devices including laptops and travel hairdryers.

The best travel adaptor for multiple devices

Bestek 200W Travel Adaptor

6. Bestek 200W Travel Adaptor

A voltage converter is required for devices that do not offer dual voltage, which makes this device incredibly handy if you’re heading to the states, where voltage is a lot lower than the UK.

With 2 AC plugs and 4 USB ports you’ll have no problem charging multiple devices at once – just bear in mind that you cannot plug in high-powered devices, such as hair dryers or straighteners. The device comes in a handy case, which contains three international AC adaptors for use in over 150 countries. The downside is you can only plug in UK devices.

How to choose the best travel adapter

The best travel adapters have USB sockets, so charging up phones, tablets and other portable devices should be fairly convenient. However, they're not all equal. Most will have at least a couple of USB slots, but check if they're rated 2.4V first. This will refuel your phone faster, and means it can cope with a tablet as well.

Better still, look for Quick Charge 3.0 (QC 3.0), which does it ever faster. If you have a laptop that charges via USB-C, look for a travel adaptor with built-in USB-PD (USB Power Delivery), which can send 100W into a laptop.

Not all travel adaptors will transform voltage, so it’s always worth checking to see if you need to purchase a voltage transformer alongside the adapter. Many devices are dual voltage rated, so you may not even require a transformer; even so, it’s always best to check the book of words to double-check.

Good news is, all EU countries have the same voltage as the UK, so it’s only the USA, South America, Asia, Australasia and Africa that you need to think about. As a rule, high-powered devices such as hairdryers and straighteners cannot be used with a travel adaptor, with the advice being to purchase cheap ones when you’ve arrived at your destination.

Amazon is usually the best place to head for travel adaptors, as you can get hold of highly-rated products for sometimes a fraction of the high street price (and with Prime Delivery).
