English Literacy School Trip Ideas

Looking for venues and destinations interlinked with the national curriculum English literacy, we got you covered! From key-stage 1 to A levels and further education English literacy is something all students will encounter throughout their educational career, and is vital to all aspects of the curriculum, even mathematics and science! English is something that all students will have to develop in order to academically progress and will inevitably be relied upon in later life.

One way to develop your pupils’ understanding of English Literacy is to take them on a Theatre School Trip or Historical Heritage experience that provides examples of historic poems, novels and plays and are interpreted through performing arts, workshops and tours.  Theatres and the performing arts in general are hugely beneficial when it comes to the subject of English. From improving diction to furthering vocabulary, drama is a great way to engage your pupils with a fun activity which is also educationally valuable.

Historical Heritage school trips or museum school trips provide workshops and tours that are fun and engaging in a unique way to teach your students about English. Many of the providers listed with us can specifically tailor to your group’s needs, guaranteeing that your class or group will go away having improved their knowledge on the exact topic that you wish to focus on.

So, what’s stopping you? Find your perfect English Literacy School Trip with us today!

Start planning school trips early

It falls under the category of ‘common sense’, but in teaching, where time is often in short supply, it bears repeating: allowing adequate time for planning a school trip is essential.

Rushed school trips , planned days or weeks before rather than months in advance, will be both a more stressful experience for you as organiser, and at risk of underperforming educationally.

One of the key findings of Ofsted’s 2008 Learning outside the classroom report was that learning outside the classroom (LOtC) was “most successful when it was an integral element of long-term curriculum planning and closely linked to classroom activities”.

Gill Harvey, chief executive of the School Travel Forum , says that many school trips don’t get beyond the planning stage because teachers “haven’t gauged parental interest and got approval from the headteacher first.”

Making an enquiry with school trips venues or providers should be “the last step in the process”, she continues.

Educational and learning value

As the Council for Learning Outside the Classroom (CLOtC) highlights in its guidance, “the objectives for [your] visit should be defined carefully and must relate closely to classroom work.”

In its 2008 report, Ofsted noted that, “Too many residential and other visits […] had learning objectives which were imprecisely defined”.

When thinking about educational school trips, headteacher Tracey Bowen stresses that its “vital to be clear about why you’re going. What’s your intention? What do you want to get out of it?”.

She continues: “We spend a phenomenal amount of time planning school trips, checking what the content of a workshop is, explaining what our needs are.”

It’s important to think carefully about where you choose to go. As Tracey points out: “You can get brochures through and think, ‘Oh, that looks great – we’ll go there!’. However, unless you’re careful, you can end up thinking, ‘That’s not what it said on the tin!’.”

“Unless you’re careful you can end up thinking, ‘That’s not what it said on the tin!'”

More fundamentally, for a successful school trip, your choice of destination should be informed by your learning objectives .

The CLOtC advises that if your outcomes can be “successfully achieved in the grounds of your school, or within easy access in the local area, then it is unlikely that travelling for hours to reach a more distant venue will enhance the learning experience”.

But, of course, there will be many instances in which an external provider located further afield will be essential.

The cost of school trips

Steve Craven, director of NST Travel Group, recommends being flexible with your travel dates, transport options, departure points and accommodation location to get the best price for school trips. He recommends not being afraid to ask for advice on making your financial resources stretch a little further.

Consider the length of your school trip, too – the longer the trip is, the more expensive it will be.

If you’re going on a residential school trip, filling your itinerary with a mix of free and paid-for options will help to keep the cost down.

Sylvia Holland is a KS4 lead practitioner at Impington Village College and Impington International College who regularly organises MFL school trips abroad.

When it comes to the cost of transport, she says, “Since Brexit and the pandemic there has been a noticeable increase in the costs of flights. However, being flexible with our travel dates has enabled us to benefit from the best prices available.”

Her school has also benefited from community and charity funding, government grants and school fundraising. She recommends looking into The Turing Scheme .

Helping parents budget for school trips

school trips for english

In a post-pandemic climate, where pupil attendance is still giving us significant causes for concern ,

Many households are under strain when it comes to paying household bills. This is combined with food costs soaring plus the impact of rising interest rates on mortgage repayments and rents.

This has resulted in households everywhere having far less disposable income. So how can schools tackle families’ anxieties about paying for school trips?

Parental finances

One thing we can do is provide parents with clear timetables at the start of the academic year. These should record proposed trips and upcoming costs. This helps with parents’ budgeting.

If your capacity extends to it, you could even look into setting up financial literacy support sessions for any parents needing to improve their ability at budgeting successfully.

Where possible, look to provide a monthly payment system. Here, parents regularly deposit small sums in a dedicated account, before then making withdrawals once a trip has been arranged.

There’s scope to subsidise the trips themselves using Pupil Premium and/or SEND funding. Or you can approach your PTA about supporting funded places.

A good way of getting parents to engage can be to research any local financial support organisations. Share details of these in your school newsletters and parental forums.

The onus is on schools to embed these kinds of practices into their daily routines. If a school can demonstrate that their parents’ financial status is an area they’re sensitive to, this will help build a sense of openness.

Support for parents

  • Consider helping parents access financial literacy workshops from a local support organisation. Or provide them yourself in after-school sessions
  • Ensure that parents feel able to inform you in the event of financial concerns or shocks that might be affecting them and their families
  • Engage with charities that might be able to offer financial support to struggling families. Pass on any useful advice or guidance
  • Some LAs can provide support with additional school expenses in ‘exceptional circumstances’

Free UK school trips

Of course, you don’t always need to travel far to find an appropriate setting for your school trip. Staying local helps you save on travelling time and costs but also helps children to engage with the local history of their community. Check out a great range of free school trips here .

Risk assessments and school trips safety

The very thought of being responsible for the wellbeing of 30+ unleashed kids can be enough to put teachers off school trips for life, but there has never been more guidance available for those responsible for carrying out risk assessments.

So what exactly is a school trip risk assessment?

According to the Association of Teachers and Lecturers, a risk assessment is “an essential element of any school trip – not to mention a legal requirement.”

The DfE’s ‘ Health and safety on educational visits’ resource , which draws upon the work of both the CLOtC and the Outdoor Education Advisers’ Panel (OEAP) , is a useful starting point.

“If you are the group leader, always be prepared to trust your own judgement”, advises the NEU.

“If you think that to continue an activity or a school trip would compromise the health and safety of the group, you have the authority and responsibility to cancel it.

“The teacher/group leader is expected to apply the same standard of care as would a ‘reasonable parent’ acting within a range of reasonable responses.”

If you need help with your risk assessment, each local authority has an outdoor education advisor who is there to help and support you.

School trips insurance

It’s vital that all staff and pupils are fully and correctly insured for your school trip. NEU says that it’s important to “study insurance policies carefully – they should include cover for possible personal liability and ‘third party insurance’ for all responsible adults.

“Group leaders must ensure that they do nothing to jeopardise their insurance cover.

“When negligence is alleged, the case will nearly always be taken against the employer, who is vicariously liable and carries insurance for third-party liability.

“Claims are seldom brought against individuals and, if individual employees are sued, they may bring in their employer as a co-defendant.

“Some employers provide a specific indemnity which protects staff against any liability if a claim is made against them personally.

“The courts do not rush to find schools and teachers negligent, they accept that accidents do happen.

“However, schools must demonstrate that they have taken reasonable steps to plan school trips thoroughly and assess and control risks, and individual teachers must demonstrate that their responses to an incident were within the range of the reasonable responses of a parent.”

Accredited providers of school trips

It’s easy to underestimate the time and energy needed to organise a school trip, especially if you’re taking a ‘DIY’ approach and arranging all the separate elements yourself.

Using an accredited provider or tour company gives you financial protection in the form of ABTA or ATOL bonding, but another benefit, as Gill Harvey from School Travel Forum explains, is that reputable tour companies will have “first-hand knowledge of your destination and a good ‘bank’ of suppliers from which to choose appropriate services for your school trip. They can offer 24-hour help and support in the unlikely event that anything should happen – from flight delays to last-minute cancellations.”

Using an accredited provider can save you time when it comes to paperwork and “gives you peace of mind that the elements of the school trip have all been carefully checked on your behalf”, according to Gill.

Jamie Walls, product development and delivery manager at YHA , recommends looking in particular for the Learning Outside the Classroom (LOtC) Quality Badge .

He says: “It’s the only nationally recognised indicator of good quality educational provision and effective risk management.

“Having this quality standard means the red tape associated with a school trip is reduced.”

Getting assistance from the school trip venue

If you can’t quite find what you’re looking for when browsing school trip ideas, don’t be afraid to ask venues for assistance, advises deputy headteacher Grace Shaw.

Many museums, galleries, zoos and the like are more than willing to be flexible.

Grace says: “Rather than picking off the menu, you can tailor-make what you need. Museums in particular are usually very happy to adapt their offer, because they’re so thrilled to share what they’ve got to share.”

School trips image of children in a museum, listening to teacher

On school trips where venue staff are taking the lead in guiding students, don’t be tempted to switch off.

Grace says: “Some teachers think, ‘I’ll get to my workshop, then the workshop leader will have the children and I’ll get them back at the end.’

“Actually, you need to work with staff, because while they’re experts in their field, you’re the expert in your children. You’ve got to develop a partnership.”

Gill Harvey adds that to maximise the positive impact of your trip and help gain approval from parents and the school to run the trip in the first place, ask your operator how they can support you to promote the learning benefits of the trip to your stakeholders.

Planning a school trip checklist

The Association of Teachers and Lecturers lays out the following checklist for planning a school trip.

  • Obtain approval from your school and the local authority, if applicable
  • Undertake or obtain a risk assessment
  • Detail staffing, supervision and training needs
  • Ensure that the trip is adequately insured
  • Plan transport
  • Obtain written parental consent for medical treatment and brief parents
  • Conduct an exploratory visit
  • Prepare contingency and emergency arrangements
  • Brief staff in preparation for the trip, including responsibilities and emergency arrangements
  • Prepare children for the trip by discussing arrangements, expectations and safety

Inspection visits

Making time to head to your destination ahead of the trip proper can help clarify issues as trivial as where you need to park, as well as more important issues relating to health and safety.

In its National Guidance, the OEAP notes that while accreditations and other sources of information provide essential assurances, “they are not a substitute for a preliminary visit and being able to clarify issues face to face.”

Jamie Walls from YHA says that by arranging a pre-visit, group leaders can get a feel for the residential destination. “They can also talk to staff, get assistance with any paperwork necessary and see the activities first-hand,” he says.

If you’re planning a school trip residential, a visit will allow you to assess catering and sleeping arrangements. “Ensure that your groups have dedicated rooms and that the catering is not only offered but of good quality, with any dietary requirements catered for too”, suggests Jamie.

Adult-to-pupil ratios

According to NEU, there’s no precise formula for the ratio of adults required on a school trip. “It’s down to reasonable judgement”, it explains.

“You should take into account the nature of the expedition, and the number, age and aptitudes of the children. School trips which involve hazardous activities require more adults for a group.”

“There’s no precise formula for the ratio of adults required on a school trip”

Many venues will state their own ratios for school trips on their website.

Government guidance on ratios

On its website, the Health and Safety Executive states that pupil-to-staff ratios for school trips are not prescribed in law.

It states that “those planning a school trip, on the basis of risk assessment, should decide the ratios, taking into account the activity to be undertaken and the age and maturity of the pupils.”

Preparing the children

Before embarking on your trip, set out your expectations about behaviour and lay out your learning outcomes and how they will be used in the following weeks.

It’s also important to set out to children what will happen on their school trip – emphasising the times when they’ll need to focus and the opportunities for free time available.

Giving children a clear idea of what will happen on your trip and when can help to alleviate anxieties about the unknown, according to experts at PAC-UK .

They propose providing a timetable of the trip, breaking it down into its component elements, the more visual the better.

School trips image of girl hanging from an abseil rope, smiling

Other ways to help anxious children include:

  • Looking at images or the website of your destination
  • Arranging a pre-visit with a caregiver, if possible
  • Giving pupils the chance to discuss any worries with a key person in school

Read more advice from PAC-UK about reducing trip trauma .

Another important aspect of preparing children for a trip is making sure that they already have a basic knowledge of the topic you’re looking to focus on.

Teacher Sylvia Holland says that many school trip venues “have a plethora of resources available online that are designed to support learning in the classroom, for use either prior to or after your visit.

“Use videos to set the scene and excite pupils ahead of their trip or use worksheets to help with follow-up lesson planning and allow them to apply new-found skills.”

Make time for reflection

Making the most of a school trip isn’t just about ensuring its smooth running on the day – the point, after all, is for the visit to have a measurable positive benefit on students’ learning when they return to the classroom.

As such, it’s equally important to give due consideration to how you plan to continue the learning – in some cases post-visit resources may be available to help you – and to reflect, in partnership with students, on the experience: evaluate its effectiveness in terms of improving educational outcomes, and learn lessons for next time.

English & Literacy School Trips

Learning Objective

From Spelling and Grammar to Saxons & Shakespeare

Literacy is arguably the most important part of our National Curriculum. A good working knowledge and understanding of our first language is critical before we can really begin to explore other areas of the curriculum. A child who struggles with comprehension and communication will not understand what they are being taught in other subject areas, or will find it difficult to explain their answers. They could be naturally gifted for a subject like science, but if without good reading, writing, speaking or listening skills, they are going to be held back.

Clearly the classroom is a great place to teach basic literacy, but the benefits of a school trip, especially once they start to nurture their understanding of the history of language, should not be overlooked. The obvious destination for a school trip with a focus on English Language is the birth place of William Shakespeare; Stratford upon Avon , find more on this page. Also below you will also find inspiration from our other destinations which cover different periods in history, from the Anglo Saxon influence, through to the modern day. If you are looking for a school visit desination that offers high quality educational value for your English trip, you will find it here. Our trips and workshops cater for topics relating to SpaG, Stories and Folktalkes, Theatre and Film and much more.

English Literature

English Literature School Trips

Need something bespoke.

Did you know that you can bring English Literature to life for your students either by going abroad or staying in the UK?

You can take English literature outside the classroom to visit some of the places that inspired the works you’re studying, and bring the books to life for your students!

With a better understanding of the context in which the piece was written, your students will be able to delve further into the work.

Why arrange an English literature school trip?

Bring literature to life.

An English literature school trip offers your students the opportunity to better understand the context in which the texts they are studying were written.

For example, if your students are studying WW1 poetry, the opportunity to learn more about life on the Western Front for the soldiers will help deepen their understanding of the poems.

They can visit the trenches and learn more about the terrible conditions that soldiers had to put up with while also being under constant threat of attack.

At the In Flanders Fields Museum, they’ll discover the stories of individual soldiers. And at the many war cemeteries and memorials throughout the area, they’ll be able to pay their respects, while also taking in the scale of destruction.

They’ll also be able to visit Talbot House, where soldiers went for some relief from the horrors of the frontline. Here, your students will be reminded that most of the soldiers were normal men from diverse backgrounds who had been thrown into war.

You can even visit the very places where some of the poems were written.

For example, your students will see beyond the words of their study pieces to the sentiment behind them with visits to places like the Essex Farm Dressing Station in Ypres, where John McCrae wrote In Flanders Fields after the death of his friend, Lieutenant Alexis Helmer.

The poem has become synonymous with the sacrifice of soldiers, so a visit to the WW1 battlefields of Belgium and France will certainly allow your students to gain a deeper understanding of the inspiration behind it.

And in the Somme , you can follow in the footsteps of Wilfred Owen, or visit key locations from Sebastian Faulks’ Birdsong .

Encourage their passion for literature

An English literature school trip can bring the words that your students have been studying to life, whether that’s by showing them the context in which a piece was written, or by seeing it performed on stage in the West End.

For the latter, school trips to London are a very popular choice, as we can arrange for you to enjoy a theatre performance of the play you’re studying, as well as a backstage tour of one of the capital’s most prestigious theatres.

By taking a trip to see the play you’re studying performed on stage, the words will be lifted right off the page. Your students will never forget these experiences – encouraging a lifelong passion for literature.

Your trip could also provide your students with practical experiences of the text that they’re studying. They’ll have learnt more about the context in which the piece was written and they’ll have physically explored the text, helping to develop their responses to exam questions.

Enjoy the trip as much as your students

Originally founded by former teachers, and with many former teachers still among us, we understand the value of English literature school trips and how to make them successful.

Your trip will be completely tailor-made, to ensure that it meets your specific requirements and learning objectives. And we’ll be on hand throughout the process to answer any questions you have.

In fact, we’ll be with you every step of the way, from now until you return home at the end of your trip. While abroad, you’ll be able to reach us with just one phone call, at any time of the day or night. And, with this comprehensive level of support while you’re away, you’ll be able to relax and enjoy the experience as much as your students.

This museum offers students the chance to experience what Dickens’ home would have been like, as well as learn more about the life and works of the great novelist and social commentator. Here, you will find one of the most important collections of his artefacts in the world.

Workshops available:

A Christmas Carol: Creating Scrooge Using copies of original draft manuscripts from our archival collection, students will look at why Dickens’s celebrated and ever popular Christmas story has secured such an enduring place in the English speaking world’s literary consciousness, with a myriad adaptations on stage, screen and print. Dickens’s social conscience: Oliver Twist and poverty in Victorian Britain  Whilst living here at 48 Doughty Street, Dickens wrote one of his most famous novels - Oliver Twist. In this session students will explore this celebrated book as well as excerpts from his non-fiction writing, in order to explore poverty in the Victorian era and Dickens’s life and work as a social reformer.   Crime & Punishment: Exploring Victorian Justice through Dickens’s Eyes  In this engaging session, students look at a variety of archival resources and ephemera from our collection at Doughty Street to build up a picture of justice, crime and punishment in Victorian Britain through the eyes of man committed to social justice and reform.

Great Expectations: Miss Havisham revisited Great Expectations is one of Dickens’s best loved and critically acclaimed works. Using the text, objects and documents from our own archival collection, students will explore aspects of Dicken’s own life and experiences that may have influenced this work. In particular they will focus on one of Dickens’s more notorious and memorable characters – Miss Havisham; looking again at whether the common perceptions about her are justified…or not!   Exploring A Christmas Carol in the social context of Victorian Britain Through a consideration of the text and archival material held here at Doughty Street, students will extend their knowledge of A Christmas Carol, by considering how Dickens used the story’s themes and characters to highlight what he saw as some of the most pressing social problems and issues in the Victorian Britain of his day.

History of Perm Krai

For the first time the word “perm” was mentioned in “The Tale of Past Years”, a fundamental source in the interpretation of the history of the Eastern Slavs created in the early 12th century. Perm were one of the peoples who paid tribute to the Kievan Rus. They were found by the first Russian expeditions to the Urals, to the north of the Kama River basin. Later, in Russian chronicles, this territory was called Old Perm or Perm Vychegodskaya.

Unlike Perm Vychegodskaya, the land along the upper reaches of the Kama River became known as the Great Perm. This name is often found in the written monuments of the 14th century. In the 14th - 17th centuries, the Great Perm included extensive lands along the Kama from its origins in the west to the Ural mountain range in the east, and from the upper reaches of the Pechora River in the north to the Chusovaya River in the south.

Novgorod merchants were the first ones who got interested in the Great Perm (furs and tributes). In the 14th - the first half of the 15th centuries, the Grand Duchy of Moscow began to encroach on the lands in the upper Kama. In the early 15th century, the first Russian settlements were founded in the Great Perm.

In the second half of the 15th century, after the Novgorod Republic ceased to exist, the area became part of the united Russian state. Russia significantly expanded its borders to the east and gained access to new natural resources.

In the 17th century, the town of Sol Kamskaya (Solikamsk) became an important center of military, economic and cultural assimilation of the Middle Urals in the north. In the south-east, the newly constructed town of Kungur played the same role. In the first quarter of the 18th century, about 46,000 people lived on the territory of Great Perm, about 65% of them were Russians.

Until 1727, the Middle Urals was part of Siberian gubernia with the center in Tobolsk, then Perm was part of Kazan gubernia, and, from 1781, by order of Catherine II, the Perm region ruled by a governor-general was formed.

It remained the main mining area of the Russian Empire until the end of the 19th century. There were more than 110 mining plants producing cast iron, iron, steel. For a long time, it was the main provider of copper. Salt production was also developed. In the east of the Urals large deposits of platinum were discovered. By the end of the 19th century, gold mining grew twice.

The 20th century was marked by intense growth of the local industry: engineering structure became more complex and rich. During the Second World War, more than 120 plants were evacuated in the Western Urals. Such branches of industry as chemical, non-ferrous metallurgy, oil-processing developed intensely; oil deposits prospecting began; a number of pulp and paper mills was concentrated in the region; new towns grew on the basis of new industries.

In 1938, Perm Oblast was formed. In 1940-1957, it was called Molotov Oblast. In Soviet times, the Komi-Perm Autonomous District was part of Perm oblast. In 1993, with the adoption of the Constitution of Russia, it became an independent subject of the Russian Federation.

In 2003, a referendum was held in which the residents of Perm Oblast and the Komi-Perm Autonomous District supported the unification of the two regions into one. In 2005, these two administrative regions ceased to exist and the united Perm Krai was formed.

Summer Road Trips

Ready for the Summer? We’ve Got Destinations to Explore.

The kids are out of school, the sun is shining, and the often slower pace of the summer months is perfect for hitting the open road. Unlike travel squeezed in around school schedules or over the holidays, summer travel has a more unhurried vibe. The longer days give drivers more daylight driving hours, although I one thousand percent recommend using some of that precious daylight to make an unplanned stop when you see something interesting or simply think, “I wonder where that road goes?”

One of the drawbacks of summer road trips is that you’ll find lots of other people on the road with the same plan. However, the upside is that you might have more time and be able to prioritize slow travel. How nice is it to be able to really be present and absorb the place you’re in when you are having a summer adventure?

Whether your philosophy is “the more the merrier” or you seek to combat the crowds by choosing an off-the-grid destination, one of these TK summer road trips might be the inspiration you need to do that safety check on your car, load up, and explore.

Point Your Road Trip Wheels North to Door County, Wisconsin

Located between the waters of Green Bay and Lake Michigan, Door County was once a summer playground for affluent Chicagoans seeking to escape the city’s heat. Today, this 70-mile peninsula offers a bevy of activities all year round, although summer is especially beautiful. It remains a great place to enjoy being outdoors without sweltering temperatures.

I live in San Antonio, and despite my love of summer sun, the triple-digit temperatures are not my favorite thing, so Door County tops my list of road trip-worthy summer spots.

Surrounded by all the water, you are probably guessing that there are ample opportunities for water activities in Door County, and you would be correct! You can take part in all types of water activities near Door County’s beaches and waterways, including swimming, fishing, boating, paddleboarding, and even snorkeling and diving. The water will likely seem cold if you’re coming from the south and are used to warmer waters, but it is warm enough to swim safely. Research water activities ahead of time to see if you’d be more comfortable in a wet suit.

Summer Road Trip to Door County’s Parks

If you prefer to take in the water’s beauty without getting in it, Door County has gorgeous, scenic hiking and other opportunities to explore the outdoors. You can’t get very far without views of the water! Peninsula State Park offers everything from a lighthouse to explore to bike trails. There’s also Eagle Tower, a completely accessible viewing tower with gently sloping ramps that are both wheelchair and stroller-friendly.

One of the coolest things I did in Door County was to go stargazing. As a city dweller, I’m completely fascinated with the night sky in places less populated by light pollution. Newport State Park is the best place to see the stars in Door County. We put “International Dark Sky Park” into Google Maps when we were near the park and followed Newport State Park road into the park until we reached a dead end. Do not stop at the park entrance hut.

Once you’ve parked, take the paved path about 200 yards to the water. If you go before it gets completely dark, you’ll be able to see just fine, but if you go after dark, I recommend you make the trek without flashlights. I know that sounds crazy, but your eyes will quickly adjust to the dark, and you—and everyone else—will have a better experience if you keep light from flashlights or phones to a necessary minimum.

Cody, Wyoming – The Gateway to Yellowstone National Park

Cody is 53 miles – about an hour’s drive – from Yellowstone National Park’s East Entrance. Yellowstone is a fantastic summer road trip destination in itself and the town of Cody is a perfect basecamp to explore the park. The drive from Cody to the East Entrance takes about an hour each way. Compliment the scenic drive with education and listen to the free Chief Joseph Scenic Byway episode on the Travelstory app. The episode lasts most of the drive, correlates with the scenery you will pass, and allows some historical context. Best of all the episode, created in partnership with Cody Yellowstone , does not require a cell signal, which is a good thing because you probably will not have one!

If you need another driving adventure, consider renting a UTV from Tread ‘N Trails in downtown Cody and exploring over 25,000 acres of public lands in a Polaris Side-by-Side UTV. The only requirement is a valid driver’s license and a sense of adventure. And, while a sense of direction is always useful, the UTVs are programmed with routes, and you’re likely to be within cell signal the entire time, even though the open skies and pristine, unspoiled scenery will suggest otherwise.

Downtown Cody has lots of options for shopping, dining, and places to stay, so once you’re ready to call it a day on the driving, this is an easy and fun place to explore on foot. From getting a slice of Old West history at the historic Hotel Irma to eclectic boutiques to a cool craft beer scene, strolling down Sheridan Avenue is an opportunity to build your own adventure.

Tips for Driving in Yellowstone National Park

Although Cody is fun to explore on its own, it’s almost inconceivable to think of going to Cody and skipping Yellowstone. You are right there! Driving through Yellowstone is one of the best adventures you can have in your car, so heed this advice to have the best experience:

  • Accept that you are going to sit in traffic. Whether that’s a line to get into the park or a congested bear jam, there are probably going to be times when you just want to go but can’t because someone else’s car is in front of you. Everyone loves Yellowstone on a summer road trip. There’s traffic. Know it going in and be patient. There’s lots to look at.
  • Don’t stop in the middle of the road. While that might sound like dumb advice, it’s easy to get distracted by the gorgeous scenery, wildlife, or other activities around you. There are pull-out spots along the parks’ main roads, so make sure to use them.
  • Wildlife has the right of way. Seeing bison, bears, and other wild creatures from your car is breathtaking. But sometimes, bison are gonna bison. They will walk into the road, often in front of your car, without looking, as if they expect you just to stop. And that’s exactly what you should do. While maybe you could reason with an errant three-year-old who lurched out into the street, that doesn’t work with a bison, and really, it’s their space. We’re just looking.
  • Bring Snacks. Once you’re committed to driving through Yellowstone National Park, there aren’t many choices for where to stop and get food. If you’re doing a daylong road trip through the park and driving back to Cody, you’re probably going to eat breakfast before you leave in the morning and a late dinner after you’re back. Make sure you pack lots of things to eat in the car, especially protein-heavy snacks like jerky and energy bars.

Meet Me In St. Louis

St Louis, Missouri has lots of urban fun. Whether you choose this Missouri city as a destination or see the Gateway Arch from Interstate 64 and think, “We should stop to check that out,” this is a summer road trip spot where you can pack in a week’s worth of fun or enjoy some highlights for an afternoon.

If you’re a national parks person, you can’t miss a stop at the country’s smallest national park, Gateway Arch National Park . Long the most visible, recognizable symbol of St Louis, the Arch is a tangible symbol of Westward expansion. You can ride to the top of the Arch, which is a fun, cross-it-off-your-travel-bucket list experience. The trams are in pods that seat four people and the ride takes about four minutes to reach the top. The observation area is narrow and on a clear day, you can see neighboring Illinois on one side and view the St Louis city skyline from the other.

At the base of the Arch is a very well-done museum that offers immersive exhibits that tell the story of St Louis’ role in settling the American West. Visitors can also walk around the base of the Arch to get a full sense of how massive it really is.

Fun fact: I lived just outside St Louis for five years and never went to the top of the Arch because I thought it was terrifying. I found the experience very mildly anxiety-inducing but I’m proud of myself for doing it when I visited last October. I it wasn’t the scary event, I’d made it out in my head to be, and I recommend doing it at least once in your lifetime.

What We Love Here: An Up and Coming City for Food

St Louis is also an incredible food and beverage city. While you might think the food is limited to St Louis style thin crust pizza and gooey butter cake – both legit examples of Midwestern yumminess – the city is a blend of food culture, brought in by recent immigrants and St Louis-born chefs who’ve trained and elsewhere and returned home. Eating in St Louis is a joy.

If you want to get your taste buds going, check out the short film The Flavor of St Louis. I recommend eating at each of the highlighted restaurants while you are in town, from freshly made sushi at Sado to an elevated veggie-forward experience at Vicia to the most to-die-for pastries at La Patisserie Chouquette.

Under-the-Radar Road Trip Near Houston: Sugar Land, Texas

I’ll end my list of sweet summer road trip picks with – what else? – Sugar Land . A mere 20 miles from bustling, busy Houston, Sugar Land’s name comes from the product it was once best known for producing – sugar. Early settlers brought sugar cane plants to the area, which thrived in the fertile soil in the Brazos River floodplain. The area’s sugar plantations were eventually absorbed into the Imperial Sugar empire, which had its refinery and distribution center in Sugar Land for 150+ years. The old sugar factor still stands as a local icon and landmark, although sugar isn’t produced in Sugar Land any longer.

Sugar Land has a quaint and walkable town square lined with shops and creative places to eat. The town square always has something going on, from free fitness classes to live music. Even if there’s nothing going on, the space is picturesque and Instagrammable, with clever seating, fountains, and fun sculptures that make imaginative photo backdrops.

For a super quirky experience in Sugar Land, book a time slot at the Department of Wonder, which is an interactive, mixed-reality experience. The experience is a little hard to describe, but a great way to summarize it is “Stepping into a 10,000-square-foot video game and going on a quest.” Anyone who has ever had any type of Meow Wolfe experience will find some similarities in the Department of Wonder. Guests enter through a “lamp shop” and are given a lantern, which they’ll use to solve clues to open the magic portal.

The Department of Wonder has indoor play equipment, live actors, and lots of whimsy. There are adults-only sessions and kids’ sessions, both of which must be booked in advance. The adult-only sessions include cocktails, and the role players are a little more spicy.

Summer Road Trips

What We Love Here: Sugar Land’s Outdoor Spaces

Although you can park your car in downtown Sugar Land and have a world of fun things within easy walking distance, you’ll need to get in your car to explore Sugar Land’s green spaces. Even though Sugar Land is not the big city of Houston, it is still very much an urban area with carefully designed green spaces to get people outdoors and moving. Trust me, check out all the delicious food options in downtown Sugar Land, and you’re going to want a walk or a bike ride, if you’ve brought your bikes along on your summer road trip.

  • Cullinan Park: a 754-acre nature preserve with a four-mile network of soft, easy, shaded trails and a boardwalk over the lake, perfect for wildlife viewing. Warning: Heed the alligator signs! I didn’t see any, but they’re living in the park.
  • Brazos River Park: Three miles of paved trails, playgrounds, and public outdoor art.
  • Sugar Land Memorial Park: Peaceful paved walking paths, a pond with a self-service kayak rental kiosk, and monuments to military veterans. I also saw alligator warning signs here, but no gators!
