Rolling Stones drummer Charlie Watts, the band’s ‘secret essence,’ dies at 80

Charlie Watts, the drummer who anchored the Rolling Stones throughout their reign as the World’s Greatest Rock & Roll Band, has died at age 80.

Aug. 24, 2021

The “Gimme Shelter” hitmakers will rock the L.A. area July 10 with a one-night stay at SoFi Stadium. The band also will make stops in Glendale, Ariz., on May 7, Las Vegas on May 11 and at Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on July 17.

Fans can expect to see the always explosive Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood firing on all cylinders, more than six decades after the group’s formation. Drummer Steve Jordan, who filled in for the band’s longtime drummer Charlie Watts during his illness and after his death in August 2021, has joined the band full-time, both in the studio and on the road.

The Grammy-nominated album “Hackney Diamonds” is the group’s first release of strictly original material since its 2005 LP “A Bigger Bang.” It’s also the first album released since Watts’ death.

Review: Oldies but goodies, the Rolling Stones gather no moss on ‘Hackney Diamonds’

The Stones’ first album of originals in 18 years, and first since Charlie Watts died, is surprisingly spry, sparked by the deathless riffs of Keith and Ronnie.

Oct. 19, 2023

“The songs blend the same ingredients the Stones have been using since the beginning — blues, rock, soul, country, gospel — but they’re tighter and punchier than on any of the band’s previous late-era LPs,” Times music critic Mikael Wood wrote in his album review .

“Flinty, unpredictable, endlessly splintering: Even after half a century, nobody has come close to replicating the weave of sound Richards and Wood can still get in a song like the surging ‘Whole Wide World’ or ‘Driving Me Too Hard,’ which echoes the cascading effect of ‘Tumbling Dice.’ As the group’s timekeeper, Jordan maintains a steady if recognizably human pulse beneath it all,” Wood wrote.

Ronnie Wood, Mick Jagger and Keith Richards of The Rolling Stones

Keith Richards is the one who, famously, back about 40 years ago, replied to the sobriquet about greatness that had come to be an unofficial nickname for his group and observed: “On any given night, it’s a different band that’s the greatest rock ‘n’ roll band in the world.” This is undoubtedly true, and on Thursday evening, given a God’s-eye-view of all the music being made in the world that night, the honor might have belonged to some bar band playing in Kansas City. Who knows — it might even have been Måneskin. But chances are that it probably was the Rolling Stones … and that it probably will be for all 15 of the nights the Stones are playing on tour this fall, despite the disruption in the divine order that called an original member out less than two months ago.

Fortunately, the Stones are taking about 4-5 nights off between shows to give Foo Fighters, Glass Animals, Radiohead and Which One’s Pink their daily fair shot at being the GOAT (or the GOON… greatest of one night). But as long as they’re on this year, the Stones — average core-member age: 76 — have it to themselves, and not just by virtue of being grandfathered in: These grandfathers are busting their probably Peloton-toned asses.

Related Stories

Take-two earnings emblematic of endless risk-taking in gaming biz, 'fargo,' 'true detective: night country,' 'lessons in chemistry' creators on how their shows are all somehow connected, popular on variety.

Thursday, when the group played the first of their two shows at Inglewood’s new SoFi Stadium (they return Sunday), was a good night to be an Angeleno, whether you were a rock ‘n’ roll fan, a baseball fan, or a Stones fan sneaking looks at the score for the most important Dodgers/Giants game in history during the first 45 minutes of the band’s 135-minute set. The cheering was even a little louder than the immediate circumstance dictated during “Start Me Up.” The moment when probably half the stadium got a phone alert that the Dodgers had won the playoff series in a 2-1 victory came just seconds after Mick Jagger sang the immortal line, “You make a dead man come.” If there was some kind of cosmic synergy statement being made there, we’ll leave it to others to figure out.

All this triumph was happening even with key players absent. The Dodgers were without Max Muncy or Clayton Kershaw (and a certain pitching Voldemort not to be mentioned). The Rolling Stones are soldiering on with a lineup change that strikes at the heart much more painfully than a dislocated elbow. Sports teams are meant to be rotational over years and decades, but classic pioneer bands not so much, in the eyes of many fans, at least: You don’t have to walk more than a few yards or wade through more than a few posts to find someone who will tell you that the Stones should have called it quits the moment Charlie Watts became too ill to take part in this tour, let alone when he died Aug. 24. And then there are more practical views, shared by the 50,000 or more fans who didn’t have any compunctions about showing up Thursday. At the opposite extreme, someone on social media said this month that the only two people the Stones really need to keep touring are Mick and Chuck Leavell. (Leavell is not just the Stones’ longtime sideman keyboard player but their musical director on tour.) That was a joke — probably? — but there’s some hardboiled truth about legacy acts in it. And also, to be soft-boiled about it: Who are we to say that musicians who want to make music together shouldn’t?

There’s no hubris like fan hubris, but if you’d been there Thursday night, you would have felt it slippin’ away. (To borrow a Keith Richards-revived song title on the set list.) And part of that had to do with the new guy. It may seem sacrilegious to Charlie to say that there was anything cool about hearing the Stones march to a different drummer for the first time in history — OK, it is a sacrilege — but if you’re really a music buff, you’d be insanely incurious not to wonder what happens when a beloved and insoluble dynamic gets changed up by will or fate. And it’s not negating the tragedy or irreplaceability of the loss of Watts to say that the Stones settling for Steve Jordan is a gas, gas, gas. Maybe you had to be there to get it. (But with nine dates left on the tour, you still could.)

Watts used to be the coolest cat in the room by virtue of the implacability that came hand in hand with his ferocity. (Or underhand grip in underhand grip.) What was he thinking about, as he seemed to nearly be sitting still as he provided as rock-solid a beat as anyone in the history of rock ‘n’ roll? His stocks? Some jazz record he just bought? Maybe even how happy he was to be there — that part didn’t seem impossible, either, despite his nearly stealth stage demeanor? He was the most intriguing member of the Rolling Stones on stage, just from being the least demonstrative. And now that we’re down to three utter showboat core members, his almost bemused-seeming, cryptic calm amid the hurricane is deeply missed, along with the satisfaction of hearing the guy who originally played “Satisfaction” repeat himself, magnificently.

But there’s no doubt about what Jordan is feeling — even with shades on, he wore his enthusiasm for the role on his sleeve Thursday. He looks like he’s pounding harder than Watts did… and that’s probably no optical illusion. By being the blurry-armed, grinning counterpoint to the sleight-of-hand magic trick Watts provided, he’s almost like a stand-in for the audience, as far as palpably conveying just how thrilling it would be to be on stage with the Rolling Stones… if the audience had also put in their 10,000 hours (or probably many times that, in Jordan’s case to get there). Having a key player who runs hot in the space where the former guy used to run cool obviously is not going to make Stones sets any better than they used to be, but just having the feel of the kick drum be that different — however tragically brought about — turns out to be an unexpected kick. Put your guilt aside, Stones fans — it’s OK to be a designated mourner and experience some delight at the same time.

Five official dates into this outing (not counting a friends-and-family show), there are no surprises about how homage will be paid to Watts. The set was immediately preceded by a montage of the drummer’s different looks over the years on the rear- and side-stage screens. Before the playing of the third number, which on this night was “Rocks Off” (a high point), Jagger gave a variation on the short speech he’ll probably do a variation on every night till the tour wraps Nov. 23 in Florida: “It was great to see those images of Charlie up there on the screen just now. It reminds us of all the years that we all spent together. I’m sure lots of you guys have memories of Charlie and seeing him play too, so we want to share that with you. So we’d like to dedicate this show to him. Here’s to Charlie!” If you are expecting Mick to moisten his eyes and tell a tender story, you have not been paying much attention to the Stones for the last five or 10 or 55 years.

Jagger is probably at his most honest when he’s sharing some snark with the audience, as he did when the subject of Paul McCartney very briefly arose. McCartney, as most fans may know, managed to revive the Beatles/Stones rivalry this week — something that’s not easy to do in 2021 — when he was quoted in the New Yorker as saying of the Stones, “I’m not sure I should say it, but they’re a blues cover band, that’s sort of what the Stones are. … I think our net was cast a bit wider than theirs.” Jagger did not expend much time on being as dismissive in return, but he did get a dig in during the segment of the show devoted to some kind of local or topical sarcasm, as has become his custom in recent years. “There’s so many celebrities here tonight,” Jagger said early on. “Megan Fox is here, she’s lovely. Leonardo DiCaprio. Lady Gaga. Kirk Douglas.” (No, he is not still among us.) Then: “Paul McCartney is here; he’s going to help us — he’s going to join us in a blues cover later.” The Stones’ “net,” we can be sure, includes a pinch of comedy.

The Jagger-McCartney volleying is enough to make you feel young-ish again. Certainly it felt like we’d time-traveled to the late 1960s when, on the stairs up and out of SoFi Stadium at the end, there was one drunken fellow trying to lead a chant of: “Fuck the Beatles! Fuck the Beatles!” And when that failed to raise anything more than eyebrows, a soused monologue: “Paul McCartney is a fucking wussy!” You could hardly do better for an everything-old-is-new-again moment.

Fortunately, there was more than just inter-band beefing to make it feel like not so time has passed. The set list, hardly unexpectedly, was heavy on the ’60s, maybe even a song or two more so than usual, since “Ruby Tuesday” was the supposedly fan-voted wild card of the night (and being reintroduced to the set for the first time since 2016), and “19th Nervous Breakdown” being a semi-regular part of the show, as of this fall, after not being played since a couple of occasions in 2005. The nicest surprise, at least for anyone who hadn’t taken a peek at the setlist for the last show in Nashville, was that Keith Richards used one of his two lead-vocal slots to finally sing something other than “Before They Make Me Run,” et al. — it was the very rare “Connection,” from “Between the Buttons.” It felt like garage-rock in a way that the rest of the show wasn’t, and it’ll probably get slicker if they keep performing it, but it provided a surge of momentum for the deeper-cuts-loving fans before the show goes to the hits where it is inevitably going to go.

What the ’60s Lord giveth, the ’60s Lord taketh away, of course, and so some of the songs that were performed when the Stones did one of their final shows with Charlie at the Rose Bowl on Aug. 22, 2019 are gone now — no “She’s a Rainbow,” for instance (maybe because we have commercial television advertising for that). Also gone from where everyone left off in 2019: the mid-set “acoustic B-stage,” probably because the idea of having the longstanding members come out to the stadium’s middle, without their sidemen or newer recruits, isn’t as viable when there are three left instead of four. And also MIA, a staple you thought would never fade away: “Brown Sugar,” which both Mick and Keith said in a Los Angeles Times interview might be back in their sets someday. We all know better, right? How a song that requires that detailed a political defense survived in the show as long as it did is the real mystery (whether you still love it or think it had its day).

There are songs in Stones shows you think you’ve had enough of, till it turns out you haven’t. One such is “You Can’t Always Get What You Want,” which felt overexposed probably even a few decades before its un-ironic use at Trump rallies made it something that produces PTSD among a lot of Stones fans. And yet, when it came to the bridge, with Leavell doing some of his most crucial piano work and Ronnie Wood peeling off some solo licks that were unusually bittersweet for him, you realized you might miss it if it were gone, traumatic associations or no. And the number really came into its own at the close, going into double-time as a full-on secular gospel-rocker. “The Inglewood Singers outdid themselves,” Jagger said afterward, in case we missed that we’d been taken to church.

So much of the show is notable for its savvy performance tropes, as always, like the way Jagger teases the audience by coming down the center ramp just a little at a time before fully inserting himself into stadium center, or does his on-again, off-again strip-tease wardrobe changes, augmenting the black T-shirt that accentuates his skinny frame with a variety of jackets that somehow manage to touch upon every bright color featured on the “Dirty Work” cover. (Somewhat amusingly, Leavell’s keyboard rig quite transparently does double duty as Jagger’s wardrobe department.) In some ways, sure, it’s only show biz-‘n’-roll, and we like it.

And yet it still feels like actual dirty work , too. As in, a job that’s dirty but some World’s Greatest Rock ‘n’ Roll Band has gotta do it. Keith Richards was not going to get much more sentimental than Jagger was, over the course of an evening where a little sentiment wouldn’t have been unwarranted. But he verged on it, just slightly, when he gave his own happy-to-be-here, happy-to-be-anywhere speech midstream. “I’ve got to say, it’s great to see you again,” he said, seeming to mean it a little more than the mere writing of those words would suggest. “It is great to be out and about again, and let’s hope this all works out,” Richards added. And then, speaking of being on the road, he gave all the reason he needed for touring with or without Watts or not giving too much of a shit about what anybody’s expectation of a touring expiration date should be. “It’s what I do ,” he said with a laugh. Music + concerts, music + concerts | concert review: the rolling stones deliver a night of magic at sofi stadium, with tracks from 'hackney diamonds' to classic hot rockers, the band sounded inspired on its first of two shows at the venue..

A brace of classic records, scores of hit singles and beloved album tracks, and the larger-than-life personas of Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood ? That’s more than enough to thrill fans like those who packed SoFi Stadium on Wednesday for the first of the Stones’ two nights in Inglewood.

But it’s clearly not enough for the Rolling Stones , who somehow find fresh magic and motivation each night, each tour, each passing year, even as Jagger and Richards now are 80, and Wood, the baby of the band, now 77.

The War and Treaty perform as the warm-up act for...

Part of that this time is certainly the release last fall of “Hackney Diamonds,” the Rolling Stones’ 24th studio album, and first of original material since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang.” It’s a strong Stones album – seriously, go listen to it now – and it’s provided the band with a quartet of new tunes for the setlist each night.

Part of it is also that the loss of drummer Charlie Watts , the quiet anchor of the band, who died in August 2021, two months before the Rolling Stones last played SoFi Stadium , no longer casts a sorrowful shadow over the shows for band and fans alike.

All of that came together for two hours of music and a career-spanning set of 21 songs that thrilled fans from the moment the lights went dark and SoFi erupted with a roar or cheers.

“Start Me Up” kicked off the show, a song almost everyone in the stadium knew. Even with that kind of familiarity I felt chills for a moment just at the marvel of seeing the Stones again. They get old, we do, too, but this moment? Never.

“You Got Me Rocking” and “It’s Only Rock ‘n’ Roll (But I Like It)” followed, building the initial energy of the show through this pair of classic get-up-and-party numbers. Playing venues this big the Stones have perfected a few moves to help the most distant fans feel connected.

Yes, you can see it all on the massive video screens alongside, behind and above the stage. But if you’re just looking at the stage their wardrobe makes it easy to spot no matter how tiny the figures might be. To start the show, Keith was the fella in a bright green shirt, Ronnie wore a magenta-sequined jacket over a bright red shirt, and Mick, well, Mick lost his jacket fast and a shirt quickly followed, leaving him the hyperactive gent in a long-sleeved black pullover.

“Angry,” the lead single from “Hackney Diamonds,” delivered the first of four songs off the new album. It sounds like a Stones track from 40 years ago, which is a good thing, and the crowd stayed on its feet for it. Each night, fans can vote for one rotating song to join the set – “Beast of Burden” won the vote on Wednesday. It’s slower groove featured a strong solo from Wood and Jagger sharing vocals with longtime backing singer Bernard Fowler.

More highlights of the early part of the evening included “Wild Horses,” which Jagger introduced as “something more romantical,” and which opened sweetly with just Richards and Wood on guitars before Jagger started to sing and then the rest of the band joined in. “Tumbling Dice” started to build up the rock ‘n’ roll energy again, and saw Jagger skipping and slipping to the end of a long ramp that extended into the audience in the floor seats.

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” gave the broader band a chance to shine. Keyboardist Matt Clifford stepped out front to play French horn for the opening, while Chuck Leavell, who’s played keyboards on Stones tours since 1982, was a highlight on organ and piano at different points in the song.

“We first came 60 years ago to seek fame and fortune in Hollywood,” Jagger told the crowd at the finish of “You Can’t Always Get What You Want.” “What we got was our first gig in San Bernardino, but it was great.

“And then we did this famous television show called the “T.A.M.I. Show,” he continued as a photo from that appeared on the video screen behind him.

“It was so long ago that some of you might think we’ve been hiding in the La Brea Tar Pits. We have not been.”

Jagger left the stage after introducing the band, handing off the microphone for Richards’s usual mid-show suite of songs he sings lead on. This tour, thanks to the new record, he has three numbers instead of the typical two. “Tell Me Straight” is the new one, its wistful lyrics looking back on time gone and time left: “Is the future all in the past? Just tell me straight.” (His other two numbers were longtime Keith fan favorites, “Little T&A” and “Before They Make Run.”)

Jagger returned, resplendent in a purple frock coat over a purple-sequined black shirt – Richards and Wood were also in different outfits by now, too – dancing down the ramp as the band kicked into “Sympathy for the Devil.”

From there, the back half of the set focused on similarly huge hits. “Honky Tonk Woman,” which Richard jagged electric guitar riffs, bled into “Midnight Rambler,” which more than any other song in the set explored the band’s bluesy roots. With Jagger on harmonica and vocals, and Wood and Richards soloing the song stretched out to nearly 10 minutes before Jagger collapsed to his knees at the end of the ramp into the crowd and the song finally wrapped up.

“Gimme Shelter” offered a showcase to backing vocalist Chanel Haynes, the newest member of the touring band, whose gospel roots shined as she traded lines with Jagger throughout. The main set ended with “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” one more classic tune from the most classic of rock bands still touring.

After a brief break, and another wardrobe change, the band return for a pair of songs on the encore. “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” the last of the new songs, featured Haynes again in the part sung by Lady Gaga on “Hackney Diamonds.”

Then, after “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” everything wrapped up. The full band took a bow, and then, the last three Stones took another, waving goodnight, until the next night, and the one after that.

Aaron Williams

What time do the Rolling Stones hit the stage on their Hackney Diamonds Tour ? After all, no one wants to miss out on songs like “Start Me Up” or “Get Off Of My Cloud” because of parking or concessions, so that time has to be baked into your plans. According to Setlist.fm , the Stones have been hitting the stage right around 9:15, about an hour and fifteen minutes after their opener, Gary Clark Jr. In addition to playing the album after which the tour is named, the band is also hitting classics from across their oeuvre like “Honky Tonk Women,” “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction,” and of course, “Paint It Black.” You can see the setlist and the remaining dates below.

Six decades after their first U.S. tour, the Rolling Stones are still commandeering stages.

The venerable rockers will embark on a 16-city jaunt April 28 in Houston to support their well-received new album , “Hackney Diamonds,” and plug into their extensive hits parade.

The stadium tour, sponsored by the age-appropriate AARP , will also hit cities including Las Vegas, Atlanta, Philadelphia and Los Angeles. The band will detour May 2 to play the New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival.

Tickets will go on sale at 10 a.m. local time Dec. 1 via ticketmaster.com.

'I'm going to bust a gut and do it': Dolly Parton dug deep to become a 'Rockstar'

The Stones – Mick Jagger, Keith Richards and Ronnie Wood – are basking in a bit of a studio revival with “Hackney Diamonds,” their first new album since 2005 .

The album debuted at No. 1 on the U.K. albums chart and No. 3 on the Billboard 200 album chart, making them the first act with a top 10 album each decade since the 1960s.

The single, “Angry,” is nominated for best rock song at the Grammy Awards on Feb. 4. (The band has three career wins .)

“Hackney Diamonds” is also the Stones’ first album since drummer Charlie Watts died in 2021.

The band premiered songs from the album at an intimate, invitation-only show of a few hundred people at the Racket NYC club in October, running through a handful of visceral new tracks and leaning into classics including “Shattered” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” with youthful vigor. Lady Gaga, who sings on the album track “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” joined Jagger for a thunderous duet.

LOS ANGELES, CA — Last month, The Rolling Stones released “Hackney Diamonds,” their first album of original material in 18 years.

Tuesday, the legendary English band announced they're taking it on the road.

Starting on April 28 in Houston and concluding in Santa Clara, California, on July 17, the Stones will make their way across the U.S. and Canada.

Find out what's happening in Los Angeles with free, real-time updates from Patch.

The tour hits 16 major cities, including New Orleans, Las Vegas, Seattle, Atlanta, Philadelphia, Denver, Chicago, Los Angeles and Vancouver, British Columbia.

Fans can expect to experience the Stones' most popular hits as well as new tracks from “Hackney Diamonds," the band's “best new work in decades,” as The Associated Press' Jocelyn Noveck wrote in her review of the album. She argues the 12-song collection is “tight, focused, full of heart and swagger.”

The Stones last performed across the U.S. in 2021 for their No Filter tour, marking the first time the band had toured without drummer Charlie Watts since 1963. Watts, the self-effacing and unshakeable Rolling Stones drummer who helped anchor one of rock’s greatest rhythm sections, died in August 2021. He was 80.

Tickets for the Stones' North American Hackney Diamonds tour go on sale on Dec. 1.

The Rolling Stones Offer Surprises in Los Angeles Tour Kickoff

By Gavin Edwards

Gavin Edwards

After 50 years, certain aspects of Rolling Stones concerts are completely unsurprising, even if you’ve never been to one. The show concludes with “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Charlie Watts plays his Spartan drum kit with flair and swing. Mick Jagger has more energy than a cheerleading squad that’s been chugging Red Bull.

Kicking off their 50 & Counting tour last night at the Staples Center in Los Angeles, the Stones had plenty of twists, however – starting with the UCLA marching band, which began the show by working their way through the crowd while playing a remarkably funky version of “Satisfaction.” Highlights of the set included a vigorous version of the folkie nugget “Factory Girl” from Beggar’s Banquet and a song the Stones had never before played live (“never ever ever,” Jagger testified), despite it being a Number One hit: “Emotional Rescue.” The 1974 single “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)” got a stripped-down bluesy arrangement that made it sound like it belonged on 12 X 5 , a decade earlier.

Editor’s picks

Every awful thing trump has promised to do in a second term, the 250 greatest guitarists of all time, the 500 greatest albums of all time, the 50 worst decisions in movie history.

“You Can’t Always Get What You Want” had a choir on loan from California State University’s Long Beach campus and climaxed with a gospel breakdown. Country star Keith Urban came out for the Some Girls deep cut “Respectable” (very cool choice) and not only sang the hell out of it, but held his own trading guitar solos with Keith Richards and Ron Wood. He fared much better than Gwen Stefani, who looked adorable in a sparkly Stones shirt and ironed Seventies hair but couldn’t find the heart of “Wild Horses,” just offering vocal swoops and hiccups. Mick Taylor’s one-song appearance on “Midnight Rambler” has been well-hyped, but the return of the prodigal Stone was still a treat. When Jagger and Taylor leaned in together, Jagger adopted his most ominous demeanor, but Taylor struggled to keep a grin off his face – he looked like he was having the time of his life, and he played like it, too.

Keith Urban and Keith Richards perform during the Rolling Stones '50 and Counting' Tour at Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Similarly, when Richards took charge of the band for two songs (“Before They Make Me Run” and “Happy”), he had the gleeful demeanor of a teenager who’d just swiped his dad’s car keys. “It’s great to be here,” he told the crowd. “It’s great to be anywhere, let’s be honest.”

Rolling Stones Discuss ’50 and Counting’ Tour Preparations

Jagger also alluded to the band’s advancing years, saying that they were playing the Staples Center to make the Lakers look younger. (The show was pushed back one day so it wouldn’t conflict with a potential Lakers playoff game.) But Jagger, at 69 years old, is in fine voice and still has an astonishing array of dance moves: he struts across the stage like Bob Fosse demonstrating a solo for the funky chicken, he windmills his arms in secret semaphore messages, he hops from one foot to the other as if the floor was electrified; he even does jazz hands. Richards contents himself with his trademark move, the left leg kick, but each time he does that kick, it feels like he’s genuinely moved by the sounds coming out of his guitar and needs a physical outlet.

The Rolling Stones perform at the Staples Center launching of their '50 and Counting' Tour in Los Angeles.

If Richards’ fingers aren’t as nimble as they once were, his phrasing has only improved with time. When he and Wood hit the core of a song, as they consistently did, they felt like two old friends sitting on a park bench, finishing each other’s sentences.

The band was rounded out by the Stones’ usual sidemen, including Darryl Jones on bass, Chuck Leavell on keyboards, Lisa Fischer and Bernard Fowler on backing vocals, and Bobby Keys on saxophone. The sound gradually filled out as the evening went on, until “Brown Sugar” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash” were full-blast rock & roll, capable of blowing a 50-amp fuse.

Jack russell, former great white singer, dead at 63, trump says medal he gave billionaire donor 'much better' than military medal of honor, hawk tuah girl's first pitch at a mets game got everyone unnecessarily mad.

Although the arena was full, to pack the house, the promoter had to sell a slew of tickets discounted to $85 at the last minute. Top-notch seats went for as much as $600, which prompted Jagger’s best line of the night: “Good evening, Los Angeles! Or is it really just Beverly Hills, Brentwood and parts of Santa Monica?”

Set list: 1. “Get Off of My Cloud” 2. “The Last Time” 3. “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll (But I Like It)” 4. “Paint It, Black” 5. “Gimme Shelter” 6. “Wild Horses” (with Gwen Stefani) 7. “Factory Girl” 8. “Emotional Rescue” 9. “Respectable” (with Keith Urban) 10. “Doom and Gloom” 11. “One More Shot” 12. “Honky Tonk Women” 13. “Before They Make Me Run” 14. “Happy” 15. “Midnight Rambler” (with Mick Taylor) 16. “Miss You” 17. “Start Me Up” 18. “Tumbling Dice” 19. “Brown Sugar” 20. “Sympathy for the Devil”

The Rolling Stones ‘Steel Wheels’ Tour with Guns N Roses and Living Colour

The Rolling Stones “Steel Wheels” Tour launched across North America in 1989, promoting the “Steel Wheels” album. It later went to Japan and Europe. This was the band’s last live tour with their original member Bill Wyman, who played on the bass guitar.

The opening acts on the tour consisted of Living Colour, Dan reed Network, Guns N Roses and Guns. In interviews with the L.A. Times, Guns N Roses credited much of their inspiration and learning to The Rolling Stones. The tour was a giant success, making lots of money and filling arenas across the world. It was a return to glory for The Rolling Stones, who had previously been on a seven year hiatus. For four shows in October, The Rolling Stones performed at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. The crowd was an estimated 95,000, raging from teens to older groupies of The Rolling Stones.

What’s shiny silver during the day and gives off an eye-popping lights show after dark, cost $2 billion to build, is powered by the sun, and promises to give 17,700 fans each a perfect view of a stellar show?

Nope, it’s not the latest starship from SpaceX.

Welcome to the posh new palace on Prairie Avenue — Inglewood’s new Intuit Dome, the latest jewel in the crown of the Hollywood Park sports and entertainment complex .

The area opens Thursday night with a performance by Bruno Mars. The NBA’s Los Angeles Clippers arrive on Oct. 23 against the Phoenix Suns.

The building’s creators say the dome will change the fan experience in Southern California forever. Here are five things your need to know about the new arena:

1. Leave the cash. Load the app.

Everything, and we mean everything — access to the venue, paying for concessions and parking — is controlled via the Intuit Dome App. You’ll want to download the app onto your iPhone or Android device before heading to the Dome.

When creating your profile with the app, you can choose Game Face ID to use facial recognition, allowing you to leave your phone in your pocket, according to the Intuit Dome’s website. Or use Identity Pass to store your tickets and payment information. So, just tap your phone or smartwatch at the Dome’s Zoom Thru Devices to gain access to the Dome. You can also pay for food or merchandise this way without having to stand in line.

All that high tech means, leave your money at home. The arena is cashless.

2. Let the music play

Thanks to the dome, there may be even more music in town in the years ahead.

The Forum won’t be a competitor to its new neighbor for musical performers and touring shows. It’ll be a partner.

The proximity of the Forum initially created a legal snag for the project, with then-owner Madison Square Garden Co. suing the Clippers and Inglewood, claiming the new venue violated a non-competition clause of the Forum’s operating agreements with the city. In 2020, Clippers owner Steve Ballmer found a unique solution to resolve the lawsuit — by purchasing the Forum from MSG for $400 million.

Intuit Dome has already landed a series of high-profile concerts and is expected to be a go-to site for top performers. Mexican music icon Marco Antonio Solis performs on Sunday. Next up: Twenty One Pilots on Aug. 27-28; Slipknot on Sept. 13-14; Usher on Sept. 21, 22, 24 and 25; Weezer on Oct. 11; and Billy Joel on Oct. 12.

However, the Forum will continue to be primarily a music venue with a diverse array of acts. Kings of Leon perform there on Aug. 22, Billy Strings on Aug. 23-24 and Santana and Counting Crows on Aug. 28.

Olivia Rodrigo is actually playing both rooms — Aug. 14, 16 and 17 at the Forum and Aug. 20-21 at the Dome.

And don’t forget the big dog: SoFi Stadium, which has hosted such monster acts as the Rolling Stones and Taylor Swift.

3. Home, sweet hoops

Actually, the new dome wasn’t built mainly for music. The room’s main tenant will be the NBA’s L.A. Clippers, which Balmer also owns. Coincidence? Not.

The Clips have been renters at Crypto.com Arena, with the legendary Lakers as their landlords. Since coming to La La Land, they’ve never had a home they could call their own. Until now.

They’ve also never won an NBA title — the Lakers, between Minneapolis and L.A., have 17 of those — but we’ll see how much difference this home-court advantage will make.

They’ll start by creating a “Clippers fans only section,” which already has a nickname before any fans’ posteriors have occupied any seats. “The Wall” is 51 rows — with the baseline adjacent to the visitor’s bench . You have to be a Clippers fan to sit there and you won’t be allowed to wear the garb of the visiting team, or any other NBA team for that matter.

Want to take your seat on The Wall? Hang on there, rookie. You’ll need to meet certain protocols to prove your fandom by becoming “Chuckmark certified” here . (What’s with Chuck? Chuck the Condor is the official mascot of the Clippers and he’s an intentionally goofy, but fiercely loyal bird).

Another perk for diehard Clippers’ fans: Flagship , the team’s first independent retail store in the Intuit Dome Plaza.

4. Silver, but green

Arena owners have vowed to make the new venue environmentally responsible .

Waves of solar panels line the arena’s roof, fueling its 11 megawatts of battery storage cells.

The arena is 100% electric, keeping its “carbon-free” promise. It even features 300 charging stations for electric cars.

Owners say the site’s waste reduction program will keep it from generating any waste that would end up in a landfill.

They also aimed to be drought-conscious by installing water-efficient fixtures and creating a first-of-its-kind rainwater collection system.

The Intuit Dome’s state-of-the-art Halo Board shows off its capabilities....

5. Try to keep your eyes on the game. We dare you.

The dome will be home to the coolest scoreboard this side of, well, SoFi Stadium, just down Prairie Avenue.

Sure, you paid a bundle to watch the game, but you may find yourself focused on the first-of-its-kind Halo Board .

It’s the largest-ever doubled-sided halo display ever installed in an NBA-sized arena setting. It’s smaller than the 120-yard long, double-sided screen at NFL-sized SoFi, but the new, cutting-edge Intuit scoreboard boasts advancements that aim to connect fans deeper into the event experience.

The new screen is 44,000 square-feet all told, consisting of 233 million LEDs. It would take more than 3,500 60-inch television screens to make up the size of the Halo Board, if you’re counting (or want to win a bar bet). It’s more than 600 feet in circumference and tops out at 519,000 pounds.
