This page is for Australians preparing to travel overseas. If you're already travelling and need help, see our information on what to do when things go wrong .

Carefully consider the risks of international travel before you book. Ensure you understand the local risks and requirements before you make a final decision.

Taking care of your health

Infectious diseases can spread quickly onboard cruises. You're more at risk of exposure than in other settings due to the large number of passengers living and socialising in close quarters over a long period.

You could fall seriously ill if you're exposed to an infectious disease, and the cost of your medical care could exceed your travel budget. If you need medical help on a cruise, you may need to pay your medical bills immediately. In serious cases, you may need to pay for medical evacuation from your ship. It's important to ensure you have access to emergency funds if needed. The Australian Government won't pay your medical bills.

When you're planning for your cruise, think about the following:

  • Health checks and vaccinations. Before you go, get a health check and any vaccinations your doctor recommends. It reduces your risk of getting infected or developing severe disease.
  • Pre-existing conditions. You're more likely to need medical assistance overseas if you have a pre-existing medical condition. Talk to your doctor about your cruise plans before you commit.
  • Medications . If you take medication, pack enough to see you through any potential delays. Learn more about travelling with medications .
  • Personal hygiene. Infectious diseases like COVID-19, influenza and gastroenteritis are common on cruise ships. Practice good personal hygiene while you're away. Learn more about preventing infectious diseases . Pack masks and hand sanitiser.

If you get sick

If you fall ill while on a cruise, you'll usually be treated in the medical facilities on board. If it's too serious to treat on board, they may transfer you to a hospital at the next port or medically evacuate you while in transit.

Standards on board may not be as good as in Australia. Talk to your cruise operator about facilities and costs on board.

COVID-19 and cruising

COVID-19 remains a global health risk. Carefully consider the risks of international travel before you book.

If an outbreak of COVID-19 happens while on a cruise, your ship may be prevented from docking. You may have to quarantine on board. Local authorities may restrict consular access if your ship is quarantined, limiting the services we can provide.

Read the travel advice for your ports of call . Ensure you understand the local risks and requirements before you make a final decision.

Read more general advice on how to take care of your health .

Cruise-specific travel insurance

Insurance policies don't always cover cruises. Make sure you choose a travel insurance policy that covers you for cruising and any activities you do on shore. Some cruise ships won't even allow you to board without cruise-specific insurance.

There are some things you should consider before choosing your insurance:

  • Your onshore destination. Make sure you're covered. Check the advice level . If it's level 3 or 4, your policy may exclude that destination.
  • Australian waters . If your cruise isn't leaving Australian waters, you still need travel insurance for your health. You may be unable to claim Medicare or private health insurance on the ship. Check before you go if your ship has a Medicare-accessible doctor on board.
  • Your planned activities. Your insurance needs to cover your onshore activities and shore excursions. Adventure activities may not have the same safety standards as Australia.
  • Medical evacuations . Make sure you're covered for medical evacuation at sea. The cost of medically evacuating a patient from a cruise ship by helicopter can be in the $100,000s.

No matter how healthy and fit you are, if you can't afford travel insurance, you can't afford to travel. The Australian Government won't pay for your medical expenses overseas or medical evacuation costs.

Learn how to choose the right cover for cruises. Read the travel insurance buyers guide  and CHOICE advice on which travel insurers cover cruises .

Passports and visas

Before you go, organise your passport and any visas you'll need.

  • Pack your passport. If you're entering a foreign country's waters, you may be asked to show it, even if you don't plan to disembark in the country. Learn more about passports.
  • Get your visas for all destinations. Check visa requirements with your cruise operator or holiday provider well before your planned departure. Learn more about visas .

Severe weather and tsunami risks

Most cruise lines will have processes in place for severe weather.

It can cause rough seas and impact your itinerary. They may reroute the ship if the weather event is too dangerous to navigate safely. Follow the instructions of the ship's crew and put your safety first.

  • Check the weather. Know what to expect. Especially if you're travelling somewhere that experiences cyclones.
  • Know what to do in a crisis. This includes severe weather and tsunamis .

Staying safe on board

Treat your personal safety and security on a cruise ship the way you would in any other travel destination.

  • Reduce the risk of theft. It only takes one thief to ruin your trip by stealing your things when you're not looking. Lock your cabin door, use the safe for valuables and stay alert on board. See more about theft and robbery .
  • Party safely. Many cruise liners are famous for their bars, nightclubs and cocktails by the pool. Take the same precautions as you would onshore. Don't swim while drunk. Don't do drugs. Know your limits, watch for spiking and take care of others. See more about partying safely .
  • Prevent assault. Socialise safely with strangers and look out for your mates. See our advice on reducing the risk of assault and sexual assault .

Read more advice about staying safe and avoiding danger.

Shore visits

Shore visits are a highlight of any cruise. Just be mindful that the risks in each destination can be unique.

  • Research the destination. Know the safety and health risks there. Read the travel advisory for the destination .
  • Protect your passport. Unless the local law says you must have it on you at all times, keep it on the boat in your room's safe. Always protect your passport.
  • Protect your property. Professional thieves target passengers on shore visits who let their guard down. Especially passengers who look like inexperienced travellers. Protect yourself from theft .
  • Look after your health. Research the activity you plan to do. Find out if it commonly leads to particular health problems, especially injuries. Find out if you can get medical assistance while onshore.
  • Wear safety gear. Riding bikes, scooters, and other adventure activities are popular extras for cruise passengers. Always wear the correct safety gear for your activity. Also, make sure your insurance covers you for it. Just in case things go wrong.

Piracy and conflict

Piracy is a risk in some parts of the world. Ask the cruise company about their security measures if you're going through a piracy-prone area. Find out about their policies and procedures in the event of a pirate attack.

Conflict in the countries surrounding your cruise route can make traversing the waters more dangerous. Be aware of current events in the region you're cruising through. Ask your cruise company if there are any safety concerns. They may reroute your cruise if the risks are too high.

Worst case scenario

Cruises have policies for what happens if a passenger dies on board.

We strongly advise you to have travel insurance that covers death and repatriation of your remains. It often costs 1000s of dollars.

If you die, the cruise line won't pay for these services. Neither will the Australian Government. It will be your estate or your loved ones that get stuck with the bill.

Learn more about what happens if you die overseas .

Where to get help

On your cruise liner, your first port of call for help is the crew. You can also get help from:

  • ship's security
  • ship's doctor
  • travel companions
  • your travel insurer.

If you're onshore:

  • the tour guide
  • local authorities
  • local hospital

The Australian Government

In some circumstances, consular officials may be able to help. However, there are limits.

It's important you understand our limits and how and when we can help. Read the Consular Services Charter .

  • See the travel advisory for all your destinations , including shore visits and territorial waters. Know what each advice level means.
  • Also see our advice for travelling by boat .
  • Learn about piracy , terrorism and kidnapping .

Where cruise lines stand on tests and vaccinations

The return of cruises has had many jumping for joy, but with each cruise line adhering to different COVID-19 protocols, booking a cruise can be terribly confusing.

There is still a lot of uncertainty surrounding what rules apply to cruise ships after the tight restrictions during the pandemic .

“The cruise industries have seen a slower return to normal since the pandemic, but are definitely making a comeback,” Dr Jan Jones of the University of New Haven’s hospitality and tourism department told Condé Nast Traveller . “Cruisers have been patiently waiting and there is pent-up demand. The slow return was impacted by low consumer confidence, continued health and safety concerns, and issues with air travel to and from ports.”

According to the Australia’s Department of Health , as of July 2022, travellers to and from Australia no longer need to provide evidence of their COVID-19 vaccination status, though travellers are encouraged to be vaccinated for their own protection.

But the department warns that cruise operators may have specific requirements for their passengers, and must also meet any requirements of the state or territory they are operating in – meaning it’s best to check the requirements of your cruise operator and the states and/or territories and countries in which you will be travelling.

We’ve rounded up the cruise lines that have adjusted their approach to COVID-19 in a post-pandemic world.

Azamara does not require a negative COVID-19 test prior to boarding unless this is required by local country regulations (those embarking from Australia, however, require testing).

They also highly recommend that guests take a COVID-19 test prior to starting their travels. Azamara will provide a complimentary test for their pre-cruise land program or hotel stay guests prior to embarkation.

Carnival Cruises

Vaccinated cruises are available for guests 12 years and older, who have received their final dose of an approved COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days prior to the sailing day (not counting embarkation day) and have proof of vaccination.

Celebrity Cruises

All guests ages 12 and older must be fully vaccinated to sail, and while COVID-19 booster vaccine shots are not currently required to sail, they are highly recommended.

Guests are considered fully vaccinated against COVID-19 if 2 weeks have passed since their second dose in a 2-dose series (such as Pfizer or Moderna vaccines); or, 2 weeks after a one dose series such as Johnson & Johnson’s Janssen vaccine. All guests must test negative for COVID-19 in order to board their sailing.

Vaccination or COVID recovery certificate are required for all guests ages 12 and above. Vaccination boosters after the elapse of nine months (270 days) is required for all guests ages 18 and above, as well as a COVID-19 Antigen Rapid test or PCR test for all guests ages 12 and above. Self-tests are not accepted.

Disney Cruise Line

Starting September 2, 2022, for voyages from the United States and Canadian ports, Disney Cruise Line requires that all vaccine-eligible guests (ages 12 and older) be fully vaccinated in order to cruise, including children.

Unvaccinated children five to 11 years old will no longer need the vaccine to sail, though cruises that visit Australia, Canada, and Greece must still have passengers test before setting sail.

Holland America Line

It is highly recommended that guests are fully vaccinated and boosted (if eligible) at time of sailing.

To find out what vaccine and testing requirements apply to your voyage, click here . Enhanced testing and vaccine requirements may apply to certain itineraries, so it is important that guests check the requirements for their specific booking by using the link above.

MSC Cruises

All guests embarking are strongly encouraged, but not required, to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19. For vaccinated guests, it’s not required (but strongly recommended) to present a negative test.

Unvaccinated guests, guests without a vaccine certificate, or guests who have recovered from COVID-19, ages 5 and older are required to present a negative COVID-19 RT-PCR or Antigen test taken 48 hours prior to embarkation. Tests must be laboratory certified – a rapid antigen self-test is not valid for travel purposes.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Beginning October 4, 2022, Norwegian Cruise Line will drop all vaccination requirements on its global sailings, making them the first major cruise line to announce it will discontinue requirements for all guests.

NCL will continue to follow the travel requirements of the destinations it visits, as some countries require a negative test for vaccinated and unvaccinated passengers 12 and older, or a certificate of recovery.

Oceania Cruises

Fully vaccinated travellers aged 12 and older will not need to test to embark, but unvaccinated travellers will need to present a negative, medically administered covid-19 test. Antigen and PCR test results may not be more than 72 hours old at the time of boarding.

Travellers aged 11 and under are not subject to any cruise line vaccination requirements or testing protocols. Fully Vaccinated travellers must meet the generally-accepted definition of “fully vaccinated” based on the destination they are embarking and/or travelling to and must provide proof of vaccination.

Travellers who cannot provide proof of vaccination will be able to travel but subject to any required testing protocols.

P&O Cruises Australia

Prior to boarding, guests will complete a health declaration which includes verification that they do not have COVID symptoms. All guests 12 years and older are required to be fully vaccinated with a TGA-approved or recognised vaccine. It is strongly recommended that eligible children under 12 years of age are also fully vaccinated.

Minimum 95% of guests must be fully vaccinated on each P&O Cruises departure.

Guests must also declare their vaccination status at the time of booking and provide proof of vaccination status before boarding.

new caledonia

Princess Cruises

Guests must have received their final dose of an authorised COVID-19 vaccine at least 14 days before the beginning of the cruise and provide acceptable proof at terminal check-in. Boosters are highly recommended for those eligible at least seven days before cruising.

At terminal check-in, guests must attest to a negative viral COVID-19 test (PCR or rapid antigen) taken before embarkation.

Regent Seven Seas Cruises

Fully vaccinated guests are not required to test prior to embarkation. Unvaccinated guests may embark with evidence of a negative COVID-19 PCR or Antigen test from a registered test provider taken within 3 days prior to embarkation.

Royal Caribbean

All Royal Caribbean guests departing from Australia must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 with the final dose administered at least 14 days before sailing. Children aged 11 and under do not require COVID-19 vaccination to cruise, however it is highly recommended.

As part of Australian Federal and State Government guidelines for cruising, at least 95% of guests must be fully vaccinated for COVID-19. Children aged 11 and under, and guests with a valid medical exemption are permitted to travel – however, there is a limit on the number of unvaccinated guests that can travel on each cruise departure.

For most cruises under 16 nights, fully vaccinated guests will no longer need to submit a pre-cruise COVID-19 test, and unvaccinated guests will only need to submit a self-administered test taken within three days of sailing.

The protocols do not apply to itineraries for countries where local regulations may vary including Canada, Australia, and Greece.

Before you cruise, check their  Enhanced Protocol Lookup  to find out if your voyage requires additional health regulation requirements.

All embarking crew , and all guests aged 12 years and older, must be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 at least two weeks prior to embarkation.

Only guests with vaccines approved by the WHO will be permitted to board. A copy of the vaccination certificate must be uploaded to the guest’s ‘My Silversea’ in advance of their travels, in addition to showing their vaccination certificate or printed copy during the check-in and embarkation process.

Virgin Voyages

Negative COVID-19 tests are required for unvaccinated Sailors, however, they may require tests for a number of reasons including recovery cases within 90 days.

Australia’s Chief Medical Officer Paul Kelly confirmed the withdrawal of COVID-era cruise protocols to the Cruise Line Industry Association (CLIA) on Friday, following the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee (AHPPC) decision.

It follows confirmation today from Premier Chris Minns that the NSW Government will withdraw its COVID-era measures , effective immediately.

Other states are expected to make similar adjustments in line with the AHPPC announcement.

CLIA, Carnival Australia and Virgin Voyages welcomed the confirmation of the removal of cruise-specific COVID measures.

The NSW Premier has officially removed vaccine mandates and mask rules on cruise ships in line with updated advice from the Australian Health Protection Principal Committee. https://t.co/DQqIb0WWBs — Sky News Australia (@SkyNewsAust) August 27, 2023

Cruise industry welcomes move

CLIA Australasia Managing Director Joel Katz said the move will bring Australia in line with other countries and provide clarity to cruise passengers ahead of the summer cruise season.

“As the last major cruise destination to maintain cruise-specific measures, Australia’s ongoing testing and vaccination requirements caused increasing confusion among travellers, particularly as measures on land and at airports were removed.”

Since mid-2022, the staged revival of cruise operations in Australia, New Zealand and the South Pacific has seen hundreds of thousands of Aussies sail in local waters.

“The cruise industry’s top priority is the health and safety of guests, crew and the communities we visit,” Mr Katz said.

“Cruise lines will continue to abide by robust health and safety measures and hygiene standards and the industry will work closely with health authorities into the future.”

Cruise ships ban to end April 17

Joint media release with the Minister for Home Affairs, Karen Andrews, and the Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan, on the return of international cruise ships to Australia.

cruise ship regulations australia

The Hon Greg Hunt MP Former Minister for Health and Aged Care

On the basis of medical advice, the Australian Government will not renew the ban on international cruise ships arriving and departing from Australian ports, when the current determination expires on April 17.

In March 2020, following the global spread of COVID-19, the Australian Government took an important step to protect the Australian community from COVID-19 by banning the entry of large international cruise vessels into Australia under the Biosecurity Act 2015.

It has been highly effective in preventing and controlling the entry, emergence and spread of COVID-19 in Australian territory.

To ensure the safe return of international cruising to Australia, additional measures to reduce risk include:

  • Enhanced pre-arrival reporting and identification of COVID-19 risk through more questions of passengers and improved processes.
  • Amendments to the Biosecurity (Negative pratique) Instrument 2016 to ensure cruise vessels always arrive in negative pratique (that is, permission to unload passengers and cargo).
  • Stress testing of the emergency response system in relation to cruises.
  • Engaging with the cruise industry on safe resumption.
  • Passengers will be required to be double vaccinated.

National Cabinet has confirmed the positive progress by the eastern states and the cruise industry to develop appropriate health protocols and common guidelines to support a safe return to cruising.

International cruise ships will still need to meet all state and territory public health requirements of the jurisdiction into which they berth. State and territories will advise their readiness to receive cruise ships.

Cruise industry mandates – including requiring passengers be vaccinated, implementation of appropriate operating and outbreak management plans, and COVID-19 safety plans – will also help reduce the risk of COVID-19 transmission aboard cruise ships.

Minister for Health and Aged Care, Greg Hunt, said the decision allow the ban to lapse is based on medical advice.

“On the basis of medical advice and with the agreement of National Cabinet, lifting the cruise ban is consistent with the reopening of Australia’s international border and shows that we have successfully navigated Australia’s emergency response to the COVID-19 pandemic,” Minister Hunt said.

Minister for Home Affairs Karen Andrews said the Australian Border Force stands ready to welcome international cruise ship passengers and crew back to Australia.

“In 2019, before the pandemic, Australia welcomed more than 600,000 cruise ship passengers across the border from almost 350 vessels,” Minister Andrews said.

“The cruise ship industry plays an important role in our tourism sector and forms part of the Morrison Government’s plan to bolster our economic growth as we recover from the pandemic.

“I can’t wait to see our cruise terminals once again filled with arriving international passengers, getting this important industry ship-shape and back out on the water once more.”

Minister for Trade, Tourism and Investment, Dan Tehan, said the resumption of cruising in Australia was an important milestone in the Government’s COVID-19 response.

“This is great news for the cruise industry, tourism, the broader economy and the Australians who love to take a cruise holiday,” Minister Tehan said.

“The resumption of cruising is another key step forward in the tourism sector’s recovery from COVID-19.

“We look forward to welcoming cruise ships and passengers back to Australian waters.”

More than 94 per cent of Australians over the age of 16 have had two doses of a COVID-19 vaccine and more than 12 million Australians have had a booster vaccination.

Explainer: what are Australia’s obligations to cruise ships off its coast under international law?

The spectre of large ships with people desperate to come ashore is not a new sight in Australia.

In 2001, the MV Tampa infamously sought to enter Australian waters off Christmas Island to discharge more than 400 asylum seekers who had been rescued by the Norwegian vessel.

It is estimated that 15,000 crew members are now stranded on 18 cruise ships floating around Australia, with mounting concerns that coronavirus will take hold and spread.

The circumstances for each ship may vary, but the fundamental rules of international law remain the same.

Duty to render assistance

For those at sea, there is a duty for masters of vessels to render assistance to those in distress. States must fulfill this obligation, too.

Australia could be seen as fulfilling this responsibility with its plan to send doctors to the cruise ships to evaluate sick crew members. An at-sea boarding is challenging, though, and requires the consent and cooperation of those on board.

When the vessel itself is in distress, the international law of the sea allows for it to enter a port of refuge.

Read more: Yes, Australians on board the Diamond Princess need to go into quarantine again. It's time to reset the clock

Though countries exercise sovereignty over their ports and are entitled to control which vessels enter, an exception exists under customary international law to allow ships in distress to dock.

This is what happened in 2001 when the master of the Tampa issued a distress call to warrant his entry to Christmas Island.

But what counts as distress? Essentially, it is when there is a clear threat to the safety of those aboard the ship.

Traditionally, this related to situations when a vessel had a broken mast, damaged sails or malfunctioning engines or other mechanical failures requiring repair. A vessel could enter into port and seek the repairs needed before continuing on its journey.

The Tampa’s distress, however, was caused by the fact it was carrying an excess number of people who required more food, water and medical attention than the vessel was equipped to provide.

International law protections for crews

What about a cruise liner with a crew of 1,000 who live in close quarters and are exposed to the coronavirus? A situation of distress could well arise on these ships, as well.

International law has minimum requirements for the crew operating a ship. At the moment, it would seem the crew on a cruise liner would be divided between those who are essential for the running of a vessel and those whose jobs are to look after the passengers.

A situation of distress would be more easily established when the crew responsible for the actual running of the vessel are unwell and unable to perform tasks essential for the safety of the ship.

The crew members also have core rights that are set out in the Maritime Labour Convention , which came into force in 2013. It sets the working and living standards for crews working on ships internationally.

Under this convention, seafarers who are in need of immediate medical care are to be given access to medical facilities on shore. Australia is bound by this obligation for vessels located in its territorial waters, regardless of whether those ships are foreign-registered.

Australia has implemented the convention under its own Navigation Act and, most particularly, the Marine Order 11 .

That order requires the owners of vessels

put in place measures for the health protection, medical care and essential dental care for seafarers on board.

This obligation extends to ensuring that

seafarers have health protection and medical care as comparable as possible to that available to workers on shore, including prompt access to: (i) necessary medicines, medical equipment and facilities for diagnosis and treatment; and (ii) medical information and expertise.

This order applies to Australian vessels. The question is whether the same rules apply to a foreign-registered vessel.

The Ruby Princess, for example, is registered to the Bahamas . The Bahamas is bound by the Maritime Labour Convention , which sets out similar requirements to those in Australia’s Marine Order.

However, the vessel owners do not have full responsibility for the well-being of crews on board. The Maritime Labour Convention makes clear that Australia is duty-bound to offer medical care to crew on ships in its territorial waters.

The convention does not indicate who has primary responsibility to provide medical assistance in cases like these, but the shipowner does have financial liability under the treaty to defray the expenses of such treatment. What matters is the crew receives the necessary medical care.

For Australia, there is still a balance of rights to be achieved. Under international law, a state might refuse access to its ports for a ship that poses a serious and unacceptable safety, environmental, health or security threat to it. A pandemic would no doubt count in this regard.

Port states have the right to protect their local populations in different ways, consistent with international health regulations put forth by the World Health Organisation and with the International Ship and Port Facility Code .

Yet, the safety of persons on board must be assured, as well.

This Cruise Life

Australian cruise documentation requirements.

A cruise to Australia is high up on our bucket list! To visit Sydney and sail by the Sydney Opera House and see the Sydney Harbour Bridge is a dream! Plus Brisbane’s koala sanctuary, Airlie Beach, Moreton Island, and all of the other Australian sites draw us back to research Australian cruise options regularly.

In October 2022, our friends Jeff and Jarod headed out to see Australia aboard one of our favorite ships: Carnival Splendor . What they didn’t know, until late September, was that they needed to have their Electronic Travel Authority – essentially an Australian travel visa that’s tied to your passport.

In this special-edition video, we cover both the travel requirements for an Australian cruise along with the key things you need to consider when applying for an ETA.

The Rest of the Story

It was only after joining a Facebook group where someone mentioned their visa being approved that our friends even realized they needed to complete this step in mid-September. Unfortunately for them, Australia recommends completing this step 3-4 months PRIOR to your arrival! Upon calling Carnival, they were informed that it’s “in the cruise contract” and that if they were denied the visa, they would lose their entire paid cruise amount. Their airline was a bit more gracious and would “only” charge a $500 penalty to rebook.

Fortunately, the ending is a positive one: just days before the sailing, they were approved for their ETA and are onboard the beautiful Carnival Splendor (the main article picture is courtesy of Jarod).

While we are not experts in foreign visas and travel requirements, our goal is to bring more visibility to this requirement when cruising Australia. We want to save you the stress, headache, and pit-in-the-stomach feeling by making this information more visible and readily available!

Now, let’s head down under and enjoy some Oliva Newton-John and beautiful sites!

Disclaimer: we do not provide legal and/or visa guidance. Each traveler is unique and you should refer to your cruise line website or speak to your travel advisor for specifics.

Australia COVID Regulations for Cruise Ships Will Soon Go Away

Since 2022, most countries around the world have relaxed their COVID-19 regulations. Though Australia remained an exception, it looks like New South Wales (NSW) is getting ready to let go of the pandemic-related requirements it imposed on the cruise industry.

P&O Cruises Australia pacific explorer sydney australia

The news comes straight from NSW Premier Chris Minns, who announced that regulations, such as wearing a mask, getting tested, and receiving appropriate vaccinations before boarding, will be removed. On April 17, 2022, the Commonwealth of Australia lifted its ban on cruise ships but put certain health measures into place.

“These protocols were important at the time to get the cruising industry going again after COVID. They were never meant to remain forever,” he explained to Cruise Passenger Magazine .

Upon reviewing the guidelines, the Communicable Diseases Network of Australia (CDNA) established that vaccinations were an issue among families reluctant to vaccinate their children against the virus.

The Cruise Lines International Association (CLIA) likewise approved the move to dispense the additional health protocols. It cited that several hundred thousand Australians have since joined cruises without experiencing threats to their health.

The trade association also mentioned that removing the guidelines “will bring Australia into line with other jurisdictions worldwide.”

Cruise company Virgin Voyages expressed its support. With several of its itineraries featuring Australian ports of call, Chief Brand Officer Nathan Rosenberg was enthusiastic at the prospect. “We thank the Premier for his decision on the removal of these regulations. We encourage the remaining states to follow suit as soon as they can, given the high levels of interest to cruise by Australians and the contribution it makes to the economy nationally,” he stated.

Several people who heard the news echoed the sentiment. “Finally! It is embarrassing how long Australia held onto these restrictions,” wrote Mark Ryan. On Facebook, users chimed in with comments like “Long overdue” and “About time.”

Other Australian jurisdictions are expected to follow suit when the NSW government discontinues COVID-19 protocols. Already, anticipation has built among cruise lines and hopeful passengers.

Consider downloading this  Cruise Ship Travel Tips PDF  to take with you while you travel.

Special Notes for Cuba Travel:

  • Ensure shore excursions and purchases comply with  U.S. regulations .
  • U.S. credit and debit cards do NOT work in  Cuba . Bring enough cash to cover your stay. This includes payment for hotels, restaurants, taxis, souvenir shops, etc.

Before your cruise:

  • Make sure you review the latest  CDC guidance on cruise ship travel .
  • Read our  Traveler’s Checklist  .
  • Check our  country information pages for the countries you will be visiting to learn about important health and safety precautions to take. Write down the contact information for the nearest U.S. embassy or consulate in case of an emergency.
  • Always carry your passport book with you in case of an emergency. You may need your passport in the event of an unexpected medical evacuation or if the ship docks at an alternate port. You should bring your passport even if your cruise says you won’t need it.
  • Apply early for your  passport , or make sure your current one will be valid at least six months beyond your travel dates and has two or more blank pages. Your cruise company may also require you to have a passport even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection (CBP) or foreign port of entry does not.
  • Have the right foreign visas for all stops on your cruise, if required, even if you do not plan to disembark in those locations.
  • Enroll in the Smart Traveler Enrollment Program (STEP) . You will get important safety and security info. Follow us @TravelGov on Twitter , Facebook , and Instagram for travel and security information.
  • Make sure you have medical and emergency evacuation insurance that will cover your trip. Consider buying supplemental insurance. U.S. Medicare and Medicaid do not cover medical costs overseas.
  • You may also need other insurance for unexpected travel expenses when abroad. Check with your cruise line or travel agency to see if they provide such coverage. You can also check with your health or homeowner’s insurance providers and credit card companies, which sometimes provide this coverage overseas. If not, consider buying supplemental insurance.
  • Have a contingency plan for returning home if you must remain in a foreign country longer than expected. Make color copies of your passport photo page, foreign visas, and itinerary. Leave one copy with a trusted family member or friend and carry one separately from your actual documents. Make sure to take a photo of your travel documents with your phone to have electronic copies as well.

Medication and vaccination requirements:

  • Check with your doctor to make sure that traveling abroad to your destinations is  medically safe  for you and whether you need any vaccinations and/or assistive devices on your trip.
  • Check with the foreign country's embassy in the United States. They can tell you whether your medications are legal in each country you visit. Also, find out if there are limits or special instructions for bringing them in. For some medications, you may need a letter from your doctor. Carrying it in the prescription bottle might not be enough “proof.” Remember, you are required to follow the local laws of the countries you visit, including with respect to medications, even if those laws differ from the laws of the United States.
  • Ensure you have enough of your  prescription medications  to last beyond your trip dates, in case of possible delays. Some countries may not have equivalents of your prescription and over-the-counter medications.
  • Carry a written copy of all your prescriptions with you in case a country requires it, or you need to replace your medications.

Ask Your Cruise Line:

  • What their procedures are in case of emergency.
  • How family members can contact you in an emergency, such as cell or satellite phone coverage and/or an e-mail address for emergencies.
  • What types of medical services your ship can provide, such as basic or urgent care, hospitalization, dialysis, etc.
  • Check your cruise line’s prohibited items list when considering what to take with you.

During Your Cruise:

  • Remain vigilant and exercise normal precautions aboard a cruise ship and on shore, as you would whenever traveling abroad.
  • Limit your alcohol intake.
  • Ensure cabin safety and make sure the door and balcony are properly locked at all times.
  • Consider storing your travel documents and other valuables in a secure spot, such as a safe in your room or the ship’s safe.
  • Talk to the security personnel on board if you are the victim of a crime. The cruise ship should have procedures in place for handling a crime onboard.
  • Follow local laws and customs. If you break the law, you may be arrested and prosecuted.
  • If you are the  victim of a crime on shore , report it to local authorities, the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate , and to cruise ship security personnel.
  • If you lose your passport, report it right away to the nearest  U.S. embassy or consulate . Make plans to get a new passport as soon as possible.
  • Follow  CDC guidance  after you disembark.

Other Things to Keep in Mind:

Check our travelers page to learn more about specific issues you might face abroad. These include special considerations for older travelers, those with disabilities, women, and LGBTQI+ travelers.

Frequently Asked Questions

I heard you can use a passport card for a cruise, is that true.

You can use the passport card to reenter the United States at seaports of entry from Mexico, Canada, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. However, if you cannot return on the cruise ship for any reason, you will need a passport book to fly back to the United States.

Unexpected circumstances that can make it important you have a passport book include:

  • Illness or Injury – Depending on how severe your illness or injury is, you may have to be admitted to a local hospital overseas. If you cannot be discharged before the cruise ship is scheduled to depart, the cruise ship may leave without you. In this case, you would need a U.S. passport to fly home upon clearance from your doctor.
  • Damage to cruise ship – Occasionally cruise ships are damaged or have mechanical issues that cannot be fixed during your trip. In these cases, you might need to go ashore in a country which requires a passport and/or you would need a U.S passport book to fly home.

Your cruise company also may require you to have a passport, even if U.S. Customs and Border Protection or the foreign country’s border agency does not.

Norway to enforce strict zero-emissions rules on cruise ships by 2032.

Norway will impose punishments on cruise ships that do not comply with strict zero-emission rules by 2032 as part of efforts to protect its World Heritage fjords.

eCard

Starting 1 January 2026, the country will introduce regulations aimed at tourist ships and ferries under 10,000 gross tons.

However larger ships, including cruise vessels, must comply with these new emission rules by 2032.

The country’s government explained that rules will apply later for larger ships owing to the fact sufficient technology does not yet exist.

The World Heritage fjords comprise of The Naeroyfjord, Aurlandsfjorden, The Geiranger Fjord, Sunnylvsfjorden and The Tafjord.

Each one is listed as a Unesco World Heritage site, placing them under international security and protection.

Climate and environment minister Andreas Bjelland Eriksen said: “The goal is to take care of the spectacular fjords and create sustainable tourism.

“The requirement for zero emissions will contribute to technology development, lower emissions and secure the world heritage fjords as attractive tourist destinations.”

He added: “It has been important for me to find a solution. I believe we have now succeeded.”

The government also confirmed it would fund shore power facilities in popular cruise port Flam. This would mean ships can connect to the local power grid, further reducing emissions while docked.

Norway saw a record year for cruise calls and passengers in 2023. Cruise calls have risen from 2,237 in 2013 to nearly 3,500 last year.

Emission estimates show that CO2 emissions from cruise ships in Norwegian coastal and marine areas have increased sharply from 382,000 tons of CO2 in 2015 to 968,000 tons last year.

Royal Caribbean Cruise Ship Passenger Disappears Overboard on Trip to Hawaii

The Coast Guard said the cruise ship left Brisbane, Australia, about two weeks ago and was on its way to Hawaii after a stop in Tahiti. It is expected to dock in Honolulu on Friday.

Published April 27, 2023 • Updated on April 27, 2023 at 9:45 am

The U.S. Coast Guard said Wednesday it was searching for a cruise ship passenger from Australia in waters south of Hawaii.

The ship Quantum of the Seas notified the Coast Guard of a man overboard at 11:03 p.m. Tuesday, about 870 miles south of the island chain. NBC affiliate KHNL reports the ship's crew remained on scene to search for the man for approximately two hours.

A C-130 air crew took off at 7 a.m. the next morning and arrived two hours later at the scene about 500 miles south of the Big Island town of Kailua-Kona. After six hours on site, the air crew returned to Air Station Barbers Point on Oahu to refuel. Coast Guard crews will resume searching Thursday morning.
