Blue Sky Flights offers breathtaking views of Bermuda

Being born and raised in Bermuda, I have seen magnificent sunsets, the iconic white roofs and the famous pink sand beaches.

But it was not until I flew 1,500ft above the island this week that I truly appreciated the beauty and wonder of the country.

Heather Nicholds, the owner and pilot at Blue Sky Flights, invited The Royal Gazette to tour the island aboard her Cessna 172 aircraft, and I accepted the assignment.

Blue Sky Flights took off on its inaugural flight earlier this month but Ms Nicholds, 41, earned her pilot’s licence when she was 18 and has logged more than 900 hours of flying time since then.

In addition to her vast flying experience, her vibrant and easygoing personality will make even the most nervous flyer feel at ease within minutes of meeting her.

I boarded the plane on Monday in warm and sunny conditions ideal for touring the island.

The tour was scheduled for 1pm and began promptly. I was gazing down at luxurious homes in Tucker’s Town minutes after Ms Nicholds closed the door of the aircraft.

The 50-minute adventure, which costs $450 for two people, began by flying over the island’s South Shore beaches, which Ms Nicholds said was a favourite with passengers.

Despite visiting Horseshoe Bay almost every week as a child during summer months, I never realised how much the beach resembled an actual horseshoe until taking the tour.

Ms Nichols then flew west to Daniel’s Head, where the tip of the Vixen shipwreck was visible, and Dockyard, where the solar-panel-covered roofs looked like dominoes.

She then crossed the Great Sound to the City of Hamilton, where the buildings below looked like miniatures.

Ms Nicholds returned to the airport along the North Shore, which has a much rockier coastline than the South Shore, but was still marvellous to see from a plane.

She happily answered any and all questions I had about the tour and Bermuda. We spoke through a headset that blocked outside noise.

Ms Nicholds also offers 30-minute tours for two for $250, which takes passengers over the South Shore to Hamilton and the North Shore back to the airport.

I would definitely recommend the tour to anyone looking for one-of-a-kind views of the island from an experienced pilot and knowledgable guide.

Potential clients should be warned about the size of the plane. It’s one of the smallest I have ever boarded.

Ms Nicholds bought the plane, VQ-BDA , for $300,000 in 2020. It is less than 30 feet long from tip to tail and has a wingspan of a little more than 36 feet.

She said: “I love being up in the air and sharing that with other people, particularly if they have not been up in a small plane or seen Bermuda from 1,500 feet before.

“It is such a beautiful view and I love sharing that with people and making their experience for the day special.”

Royal Navy Helicopter To Fly Over Island

The RFA Tideforce is visiting in Bermuda for a brief stopover, and a Royal Navy helicopter “will conduct familiarisation flights over across the island.”

A spokesperson said, “Government House today announced that RFA Tideforce, a ship of the Royal Fleet Auxiliary, is visiting Bermuda’s waters for a brief stopover. The purpose of the visit is to give its crew a period of rest before continuing on out to sea.

“While here, a Royal Navy helicopter from RFA Tideforce will conduct familiarisation flights over across the island. This was last done in 2020 and is a key part of the ongoing hurricane preparedness plan for Bermuda. The helicopter will also conduct offshore training with the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard.

“The Royal Fleet Auxiliary [RFA] provides logistical support to the Royal Navy, all over the world. RFA Tideforce is the Fourth of Class of the Military Afloat Reach & Sustainability [MARS] Tankers. At 30,000 tonne, the Tide class tankers are the largest ships currently in service within the Royal Fleet Auxiliary.

“The Tide Class tankers are flexible, state-of-the-art double-hulled vessels, designed to provide key underway replenishment at sea [RAS] capability and support to the Queen Elizabeth Class Aircraft Carriers.”

A new company has taken flight in the valley, offering views of the Coachella Valley from about 300 feet in the air.

Pilot Christopher Cheek recently opened Big Blue Air helicopter touring and charter company at the Bermuda Dunes Airport, becoming one of a growing number of locally-owned companies offering expeditions of the valley’s landmarks and wildlife from the air and on the ground.

With so much to see and do in the valley, a long list of touring companies is ready to help residents and visitors see the sights from all angles.

“These tours are for everyone,” said Joyce Kiehl, spokeswoman for the Greater Palm Springs Convention & Visitors Bureau. “People are seeking experiences. From walking into a box canyon or riding a bike on the San Andreas Fault to touring architecture, it's about learning and experiencing and then being able to share that with others.”

One example is Palm Desert-based Desert Adventures Jeep tours, which started in 1987 and has evolved to become one of the most well-known tour operators in the valley.

Each tour is a mix of riding, education and hiking through the valley's natural features like a palm oasis, the Indian Village or slot canyons.

“The three-hour tour is definitely not just driving around,” president and CEO Bob Schneider has said.

Every tour company offers a different way to see and explore the valley’s natural landscapes and various points of interest.

“It is a great opportunity to learn something new or, in the case of Big Blue Air, learn about the destination from a different angle – up in the air,” Kiehl said.

With more than 6,000 flying hours in all types of aircraft, Cheek said he prefers a helicopter primarily because he can bring passengers in for a closer view of the valley.

“You will see … what you never see from the ground or from an airplane,” Cheek said, sitting in the lounge area of the office for Big Blue Air, off Hangar B at the Bermuda Dunes Airport.

Cheek started Big Blue Air about four years ago, primarily as a management and accounting company.

“We moved to the airport in August and bought this aircraft a little over a year ago,” he said, pointing to the Robinson’s R44 Raven Series helicopter which seats three plus a pilot.

A second chopper, which would seat seven, will be added soon, said Cheek, who has lived in the Coachella Valley since 2001 and is a graduate of Cal State San Bernardino at Palm Desert.

Cheek is Big Blue Air’s chief pilot with one other on staff. They fly charters, tours or custom trips any day of the week.

Inside the air-conditioned helicopter, the whir of the propeller is like a quiet hum. Cheek points out areas of interest.

He can hover “as low as I want, as long as it is safe,” to give passengers an incomparable view of the Salton Sea, the San Andreas Fault, the windmills and other landmarks.

“See the giraffes running,” he says, pointing to The Living Desert – where he is careful not to fly too low to upset the animals.

Moments later Cheek buzzed over the BMW Performance Center in Thermal where two cars were zooming around the track while another driver learned to handle skids.

An in-flight menu of catered beer, wine, champagne and food can also be part of the package.

Many of Cheek's clients are residents of the valley’s country clubs who charter a flight for everything from a medical appointment outside the area to a shopping excursion in Cabazon or Los Angeles to trips to a winery, Las Vegas, Lake Havasu or San Diego or a chance to golf outside the valley.

Popular golf courses include Rams Hill in Borrego Springs, a 15-minute flight, he said.

“San Diego is a 40-minute flight; L.A.’s an hour,” Cheek said.

For someone who just want a minute in a helicopter to know how it feels to lift off the ground, it’s $10. Most, however, want a little more and tours around the Coachella Valley range from about $65 to $475 per person.

Governor Takes Helicopter Tour

Governor Rena Lalgie “took to the skies” aboard a Royal Navy helicopter earlier this week (Oct 3), “to experience first-hand the capabilities of the helicopter, as well as the unique topography of Bermuda”.

Photos were posted by Government House yesterday, saying: “Her Excellency the Governor took to the skies aboard Royal Navy Wildcat helicopter Menace20 from 815NAS, currently embarked on RFA Tideforce.

“The Governor and two non-commissioned officers from the Royal Bermuda Regiment received safety instruction from the crew before launching from Government House grounds.

“The flight enabled the Governor to experience first-hand the capabilities of the helicopter, as well as the unique topography of Bermuda, before landing on-board the ship for a tour.

“The crew of RFA Tideforce have been in Bermuda for a well-deserved period of rest, having come from operations in the Turks & Caicos Islands.

“The Governor is especially grateful to Captain Chris Clarke, CO RFA Tideforce, and his crew, for the training held in support of the Royal Bermuda Regiment Coast Guard, and engagement with Government House, the Ministry of National Security and the Royal Bermuda Regiment Junior Leaders.”
