Our stay at The Lalit was amazing! The moment our taxi stopped at the entrance to the moment we left, we were treated like family by each member of staff we came into contact with during our 5 day stay. There was not 1 person without a smile, or hello how are you, can we help.... and the list is endless. The Lalit has won our hearts after staying at many 5 star hotels in Delhi, we have finally decided to call The Lalit our home whenever we travel to Delhi. The location is also excellent right in the centre and therefore close to wherever you wish to get to. The rooms are above standard for this class of hotel and all your needs are catered for. the personal amenities are excellent. In the foyer there is a table whereupon is placed a fresh flower and a card with the Vedic explanation for the day of the week. So as you walk in for your extravagant breakfast you can take a fresh flower the card and WOW your day is off to a flying start full of positivity and good vibes. Well done to the management and staff of The Lalit; travellers ....you do not need to look anywhere else. Cheers.

Staying in this hotel is always a pleasure, the location is good for central Delhi, and the rooms are clean and spacious. I have stayed in various hotels in Delhi this one has some excellently trained and helpful staff. The only downside would be the fact that there's only one restaurant, although the food is varied and quite tasty, the restaurant staff are quite slow especially if your table doesn't have any one loud or shouty, so clear your throat, as quiet tables are ignored.

Before arriving at the Claridges, I'd spend two days at the Shangri-la. And, of course, the Shangri-la was, as you'd expect, absolutely splendid. So I didn't know what to expect when I followed on my stay at the Claridges. It could have been a let -down. It wasn't. Far, far from it. Rather, my stay there was simply perfect and wholly exquisite. The attention to detail, the courtesy service, the colonial-era atmosphere was transformative, and a pleasure that echoes in my mind until even today. So if you're looking for an atmospheric, idyllic alternative to all those other gilded hotels in Delhi, I can't recommend Claridges enough. In a word, it's elegant, and then again has nothing but style. A grand hotel in the intimate tradition of grand old hotels. Of note, of course, is the ubitquitous manager who seems to be there just when you need him, each and every time. He makes the place purr. So when in Delhi, stay at Claridges. It's a grand old hotel that won't let you down. Not once.

The Ashok is a beautiful old hotel in a lovely peaceful area of the city. The hotel is grand and beautiful, though in need of some updates - renovations appear to be ongoing currently. The facilities are great. Their gym is incredible and the pool is as well. Something needs to be done with the houseflies at the pool though. It is impossible to lay down and relax because dozens of houseflies will land on you constantly. This happened to myself and my colleagues every time over the course of a week and is really uncomfortable because you cannot relax. The hotel's food was good and the restaurants were good as well. The staff were helpful and friendly. The biggest downside to this hotel for me was the internet - I've stayed in a dozen different hotels in Delhi at 3-5 stars and the wireless at the Ashok is among the very worst. It cuts out constantly, it sometimes works great and then other times not at all, and sometimes it will say you are online but you are unable to do anything. Come with a data package or you'll regret it. Otherwise, a really enjoyable stay and would stay again.

I arrived very early (around 8.00am) after an overnight flight from Europe, so was very pleased that I could occupy my room immediately. The room was large (around 50 sq.m.) with floor to ceiling picture window allowing in lots of natural light. The room lacked for nothing (with the possible exception of an adaptor to allow me to use my iPhone5 in the iPhone 4 socket on the music system). Throughout my stay I found the service levels exceptional: attentive while never obtrusive, and very helpful. The hotel is chock-full of world-class restaurants, I ate at the Indian food restaurant, Jamavar, where the food was good if not exceptional. All in all, a great experience, and surely The Leela Palace is the best hotel in Delhi.

Overall, the Hans Hotel is a great place to stay. The location is quite central (near Connaught Place and the main New Delhi train station but away from the dreadful Paharganj Area), the facilities are clean, the staff is professional. The stay includes a nice breakfast buffet (try the fresh parathe (layered flaky flatbread) with mango chutney - you have to order these separately but at no extra charge). We also had a snack of pizza and beer in the Carmelo restaurant one evening - it's a pretty decent bar. We got the room on a discount through Agoda, making it a very good value for Delhi. Only one major complaint: Watch out for the EXORBITANT PHONE CHARGES!!! One short call to a non-local Indian cell phone cost RS 1400!!!

I have stayed in several hotels in Delhi over the past few years and I can honestly say this was the best value of all. The rooms were very comfortable, the bathrooms very clean and well-appointed and the food (breakfast) was outstanding. I will definitely book at this hotel on my future visits to Delhi.

My stay at the Park Hotel in Delhi was an amazing one. Form the moment I walked into the hotel I could feel the warmth and kindness of the staff. Check in was fast and efficient.My room was just perfect, the bed was very comfortable. I liked the location, I felt safe walking out of the hotel. I also felt very secure, the gentleman at the first gate and the other security staff at the main entrance made me feel secure. The food: breakfast, lunch and dinner was varied but with a huge selection of fresh local and international dishes. The cheff was extremely kind and professional. The spa and workout facilities were very complete. Overall I enjoyed my stay at the Park hotel and would definitely recommend it to anyone looking for a clean, comfortable place to stay in Delhi.

The Imperial Hotel in Delhi is an absolute oasis - a fantastic place to stay on your visit to this marvellous but chaotic city. The rooms - we stayed in a Grand Heritage room - are gorgeous. Spacious, cool, fantastic beds and linen, marvellous bathrooms. The public rooms are amazing, beautiful marble, flowers, artwork. There are several restaurants serving different cuisines. We enjoyed having pizza at the Italian restaurant and steak "au povre vert" at The 1911 restaurant. Breakfast buffets were also lavish. The swimming pool surrounded by terraces in the garden was very welcome at the end of a day sightseeing. Honestly, we wouldn't consider staying anywhere else now. My daugther- not a huge fan of the subcontinent - raves about it and would go back just for this hotel. The staff are great and most helpful. Wonderful Sikh doorman - immaculate and so helpful and polite. Good location too, surrounded by good shopping.

We had such a long and tiring journey to Delhi and could not have been happier at the wonderful hotel we were greeted with!!! Connaught Place is such a beautiful area to stay in and this hotel was literally the icing on the cake. Such a modern look yet with the colonial element! It felt like being on a cruise ships. The beds were so big and comfortable and the bathroom we had was huge and beautiful! Water pressure was great too. We also got 2 large bottles of drinking water every day. Room was so clean and perfect. We were really taken aback by how spectacular this hotel was as the pictures do not do it justice at all. The best part was definitely the breakfast - hands down the best hotel breakfast we have ever had. Some members of the staff and management that really stood out were Hassan, Anil, Wasim, Sanjeev and Erwinjit. 100% would stay here again when we return to Delhi. As much as we were looking forward to going home, we were actually so sad to leave the hotel. All the staff were so friendly too. Would definitely recommend this hotel to everyone visiting Delhi!!! Location is excellent and very close to many places of interest (Bangla Sahib, Karol Bagh, Chandni Chowk and even South Extension). Rajiv Chowk metro station was literally a 1 min walk away! Also many good food places nearby, the hotel restaurant Zaffran is great for Indian food, while Taste of China about 10 min walk away had good Chinese food too. Really good, central location and very helpful staff. An easy walk to the metro, and to the Bengali Market, for supplies - and an ATM that usually has some cash. Ate in room/restaurant a couple of nights, and the food was delicious. Still a bit of building work in progress, and quite near a railway line, so if it's perfect peace you're after . . . well, you should probably give Delhi a miss, altogether. But we loved looking out on the parrots and squirrels while we had breakfast.

I think this is the best hotel in Delhi with reasonable price. Yes, there are a few better hotels, but way too much expensive than this one. I'd love to stay here again. Only a few things that I didn't like were, the room was smaller and older than I expected for a 5 star hotel (but it was still okay) and there was some noise in night from outside. Not too much loud, but still I heard some. But I will definitely stay here again.

It is my reading that if booking is through some agency like Agoda/Goibibo/MMT/OYO, the rooms provided in the lst instance are not at all as per expectations perhaps due to discount provided through agencies and hoteliers feel such customers to be 2nd rated. These do not match with what is shown at the time of bookings through such agencies. This has happened many a time. This happened on my trips to Goa, Haridwar, Delhi and so on. When we protest, better rooms are provided. Why such things - customers are customers and should be treated at par. This happened at Samrat Hotel through Agoda and at Hotel Classic Residency in Haridwar through Goibibo as well this time. Staff at Samrat was Excellent and always ready to help & made our stay comfortable despite several issues notified to hotel admn. Breakfast was very good n well spread n enjoyable. Agencies which accept bookings for customers must see comfort/facilities provided to customers than their hefty commissions.

The Radisson is conveniently located on the outer circle of Connaught Place. Although hotels in this area are generally more expensive, I prefer to stay here because of the numerous shops, banks, bazaars, restaurants and a metro station that are within walking distance. (There are also numerous touts which just have to be ignored.) Some less-expensive rooms can be small but they are comfortably furnished. Housekeeping is always busy cleaning the rooms most of the day and they were always inquiring if everything in my room was OK. Usually my room was made up while I was at breakfast, which was very convenient on days when I wished to stay in the room writing and doing internet. The hotel has 2 restaurants. In the evenings, the “Kebab” restaurant serves 2 fixed-price meals – one vegetarian and one non-vegetarian. Each dish is served separately with lots of explanation, and that is nice for those wishing to have an introduction to Indian cuisine. It is nice experience to eat here just once. The other restaurant has a good choice to order from and this is also where the breakfast is served. The buffet breakfast offers a large choice but the waiters serving coffee and tea are often hard to find. Of course, there are numerous restaurants and coffee houses nearby in Connaught Place. Several times I used the hotel’s transfer service to and from the airport. It was always convenient and punctual although a local taxi would have been cheaper. Recently, I was in and away from Delhi several times and I kept returning to the Radisson as it seemed to fit my needs best and I never had any problems with anything in the room.

Overall, our stay at the Diplomat was average. The staff is friendly and courteous. The rooms of average. The amenities are somewhat modern. The bathroom is a bit lacking. The food is decent but very, very overpriced. The hotel is safe. Yet, for our week stay at the Diplomat, there was a continual smell of gas (petroleum, not farts) that was headache inducing. We could not escape it while on the property. Considering everything, Hotel Diplomat is a good hotel but not a great one. There are much better hotels for a cheaper price in Delhi. But, if you have business in the diplomatic enclave in Delhi, the Diplomat will serve your needs but not impress.

Stayed there for one night. The hotel is very conveniently located- in the heart of New Delhi located in the inner circle of the bustling Connaught Place. The main inter-change metro stations is located below the Connaught Place making it very convinient for travellers who want to travel by metro. About 30-40 minutes from the New Delhi airport. The rooms were very neat and clean. The buffet breakfast was pretty good too. Didnt get a chance to have lunch or dinner.

We picked this hotel based on its proximity to the convention center Pragati Maidan, and in fact, we have walked back from the event every evening, saving lots of time by avoiding the chaotic traffic jams of New Delhi. The rooms were quite large and well equipped, room service was good and the staff attentive. We dined at the hotel and had dinner at the hotel, which was quite good. Breakfast was also included and offered a variety of choices. In short, an excellent value for money. Highly recommended!

I was extremely apprehensive of booking a hotel in Delhi and thought that I would need to go to the upper end of the market to find somewhere of decent quality.There are some (very) negative old comments about the hotel - these should be ignored as the hotel is to very high western standards with clean, comfortable double bed, large bathroom with great shower, Wifi and cable TV (showing Prem football and all cricket) in rooms - and you even get a tasty breakfast of your choice served to your room at requested time. The very friendly concierge and all staff are extremely helpful and go the extra mile to try and appease any other requests you may have. The location is excellent in the heart of Connaught Place/Circus with plenty of bars and restaurants - and designer shops (if that's your thing). Also within very easy walking distance of India Gate, Parliament and President's palace for some sightseeing. But overall excellent.

After several weeks of bad hotels in India La Sagrita was an absolute relief. It's a modern and clean hotel with very comfortable rooms. The bathroom is wonderful. It's location is central but taxi's (arranged by the hotel) are required. The restaurant is not great and should be addressed - not many food options around. The manager is grumpy (like all other managers in India?) so no big surprise there. We were seriously overcharged for the airport taxi (we paid the hotel) which left a bit of a bitter taste but all in all a great option for a less corporate hotel in central Delhi.

We stayed in The W in February 2013 during our stay in Delhi area. The hotel is a boutique hotel which takes place on the last floor of a 3 floors building. (The first floor it's some office, and the second floor has a bar, but no noise). The hotel is renovated, rooms are clean, comfortable bed, great WIFI, hot shower- great value. The location is great as well, close to the shopping bazar and the main tourist area with small cozy shops, cafes and restaurants. As well not far from main monuments of Delhi and from the airport (not more than 30 min from the airport). It's a little hard to find the hotel since the sign is close to the roof and it's dull, but it's just around the corner from starbucks or you can look for "my bar" it's in the same building. The staff is very nice and flexible. We arrived at 5am in the morning (check in is after 12) but they let us check in right away and asked to complete the registration forms only after we had some sleep which was great. I will stay here again on my next trip to Delhi.

Room was very simple and not a place you would like to hangout to much. The hotel is well located... I was apprehensive at first as I thought it would be a old hotel. I was pleasantly surprised with the hotel which I am told was recently renovated. The rooms are well appointed (business hotel type). The rooms were large enough and comfortable. The service was very very good and the food was great. Above all the pricing in the restaurant, room service, air port drop etc is reasonable by Delhi standards and very affordable for work traveller like me. I would definitely stay there again on my next visit.

We did two stints in this Hotel Deluxe Room 3rd floor 7 days and ground floor 5 days Both rooms - tastefully decorated, but felt like a prison cell Window had no views - looked onto a brick wall 2 yards away and could not be opened to allow fresh air in Noise - Hotel in dire need of double glazing. The hotel is situated next to a fairly active railway station -Woken up every morning from about 5 o'clock. Every time a train entered or left the station, the train would blast it's hooter quite long and loud 2/3 times At 0600 hours we were woken up by the Mullah calling his followers to pray In general the hotel is quite noisy until about midnight from both internal and external noise, not excessive, but enough to stop you sleeping. The walls in the hotel are very thin and opening /closing of doors and people talking can be heard quite audibly The hotel kitchens are just below the ground floor. On one occasion (Midnight / 0100 am) I had to complain because the kitchen staff were making a lot of noise washing pots and pans in the yard adjacent to my room. On two other occasion before 0500 I was awoken by the kitchen staff sweeping the yard - I didn't complain on the latter, because I was too tired to get out of bed. The front of house staff are very good and polite, but I feel the back ground staff just do what they want whenever and and don't show the same considerations This holiday was not relaxing. I woke up most mornings feeling tired and felt fairly run down by the end of my holiday. This hotel is ideal if you just want to spend a couple of nights in Delhi, but I would not recommend it if you want to spend longer

The state of ITDC hotels and why government is checking out of them 

Over the last several years, the government has been on a disinvestment drive of Ashok Group of Hotels, ITDC's accommodation chain. Here's why.

“The government has no business to be in business”. Prime Minister Narendra Modi declared this in February while addressing a webinar on privatization. A month later, sources told ET NOW that government is in the final stages to check out from one of its most valuable hotels  — the 25-acre Hotel Ashok in Lutyens Delhi. By disinvesting it, the Government is confident that it can get nearly Rs 5000 crore from a long lease of 60 years.  

Over the last several years, the Government has been on a disinvestment drive of Ashok Group of Hotels, Indian Tourism Development Corporation’s (ITDC) accommodation chain. In 2015, it had eight hotels under the group and now, it has only four – of which Hotel Ashok in Jammu has been non-operational since June 2020.    

So, why is the government checking out of these hotels? 

Continuous losses 

In ITDC, the Government of India holds 87.03%. In 2019-20, the Corporation reported a meagre profit of Rs 22.48 crore in running these hotels. In 2018-19, the profit figure stood at Rs 39.57 crore.  

Prior to that, things were in red. The losses of ITDC reportedly amounted to Rs 8.86 crore in 2014-2015; Rs 5.20 crore in 2015-2016; Rs 4.99 crore in 2016-17 and around Rs 95 lakh in March-December 2017, taking the total loss to Rs 20 crore in the three years.  

Keeping up with others 

In a reply to a Lok Sabha question in 2020, Minister of State for Tourism Prahlad Singh Patel stated, “Some of the reasons for incurring losses include the wage structure of ITDC employees which are higher than industry norms, non-refurbishment and renovation due to ongoing disinvestment process and competition from other modern hotels.” 

ICMR India, too, blames the heavy employment costs for the downfall of the group. Rise in availability of overall room supply compared to demand, and a weak global economy are some of the other reasons, it states.  

A status check 

Most of these ITDC assets are changing hands from the Central Government to the States. In 2017, Hotel Jaipur Ashok and Lalitha Mahal Palace Hotel, Mysore, were transferred to the Government of Rajasthan and the Government of Karnataka, respectively. In 2019, Hotel Patliputra Ashok in Patna was transferred to the State Government of Bihar at a negotiated value of Rs 13 crore; and Hotel Janpath was handed over to Delhi Government.  

As per ITDC’s annual report, the disinvestment process of remaining properties, which includes joint leasing of Hotel Pondicherry Ashok and giving Hotel Kalinga Ashok, Bhubaneswar on operation and maintenance contract is currently underway. 

Fate of the others 

The joint venture hotels run by ITDC are not in good shape either. Hotel Ranchi Ashok shut its doors in 2018, Hotel Nilachal Ashok, Puri has been non-operational since March 2004, and Hotel Anandpur Sahib is an incomplete project.  

In 2019-20, thirteen vigilance cases on the group were disposed of, while eight still remain pending. According to the company’s annual reports, the cases are over irregularities in tendering of Sound and Light shows, CBI case of demanding bribe for releasing payment, delay in payment to suppliers, etc.   

With grim situations like these, the government thought it would be best to check out of these hotels. In fact, disinvestment of ITDC Hotels began in the mid-'90s. However, the process was stalled as labour unions raised objections to the plans. Finally, after 20 years, the process has gathered steam again with Hotel Ashok’s leasing plan. If things go according to plan, the government will soon be left with only one core Ashok Group hotel in its kitty – the Samrat Hotel, which the government does not plan to put it on sale as of now due to security reasons.
