History: The region surrounding the Rocky Mountains was home for centuries to The Secwepemc (Shuswap) First Nations tribes. Rich in family and spiritual culture their attire was adorned with bird feathers and bright colours. They made good use of the rivers for fishing, the forests for materials, animals for meat and furs and the land for berries all collected and harvested throughout the year for winter food storage. By the late 1800's Golden started out as a cache and survey depot with the European settlements that struck up around them Golden soon prospered. Tourism has, and still is, a big part of Golden's economy, which began in 1899 when Swiss mountain guides were employed by the CPR to helped visitors from all over the world on their mountaineering expeditions.

A local’s guide to adventuring in Golden, British Columbia

Home to a passionate outdoor community and surrounded by epic mountain terrain, local adventurer Logan Hurd explains why the Canadian town of Golden continues to enthral travellers.

It’s been an exciting couple of decades for Golden, a small mountain town in eastern British Columbia. The local economy, which once relied heavily on logging and mining, has shifted to embrace adventure tourism with a strong focus on hiking, climbing, mountain biking, and other adrenaline-chasing pursuits.  

Sandwiched between BC’s Purcell Mountains and the Canadian Rockies, there’s no denying that the town’s setting is a major blessing. Golden sits between six of the country's most stunning national parks: Yoho, Glacier, Banff, Jasper, Kootenay and Mount Revelstoke, and is handsomely endowed with fast-flowing rivers, sheer granite crags, and a winter deluge of dry, powdery snow.  

If you’re unfamiliar with the region, rope access technician and avid outdoor sports enthusiast, Logan Hurd, delves into some reasons to get better acquainted.

1. Superb hiking

“Kicking Horse is a steep, gnarly mountain in the Purcell range,” explains Logan, who works in and around Golden on slope stabilisation and developing new tourism projects.

To warm up your mountain legs, Logan recommends heading out on a short hike to Gorman Lake. “If you’re feeling more adventurous, you can always continue further along alpine ridges to other lakes or even climb to the top of Kicking Horse Mountain resort,” he adds.

An hour's drive away and slightly further afield, Kootenay National Park is a wilderness area refreshingly free of gondolas and ski resorts. Located southeast of Golden, the park flanks Hwy 93, a sweeping mountain road dotted with intriguing trailheads. The eight-mile round-trip to Stanley Glacier cuts through forest to a scree-strewn valley flanked by craggy cliffs and embellished by tall, slender waterfalls.

Alternatively, for a simpler walk head to Yoho National Park, where you can stroll around aptly-named Emerald Lake on a three-mile trail under the watchful gaze of Mount Burgess and Wapta Mountain.

2. Hardcore mountain biking

When the big thaw arrives in spring, and snow comes streaming off the mountains, Kicking Horse ski runs become serious mountain bike descents that complement a web of sinuous single-track that fans out across the region.

“A ton of work has been put into building up a mountain biking trail network around Golden in recent years,” says Logan. “You can bike a new trail every day and go the whole summer without biking the same trail twice.”

Golden has three distinct cross-country mountain biking networks with over 100 miles of singletrack trails, and there are routes for every kind of rider. Word has quickly spread. Plus, unlike some of the more famous mountain towns in Canada, Golden doesn’t have to wrestle with national park restrictions. Its open and free-spirited nature is part of its appeal.

“In the past five years, bike races have picked up in popularity,” says Logan. “Events that would only pull in around a dozen competitors 10 or 15 years ago are now getting more than 100.”

Some of the trails have become legendary. Mount 7’s swift downhills are considered world class. Logan singles out the more benign Canyon Creek in the Moonraker trail system as his favourite. “It’s a blue [intermediate] cross-country trail, riding along the edge of a huge canyon with beautiful views,” he remarks.

For road-biking, drive just under two-hours west. If Canada had a Tour de France, the ascent of Mount Revelstoke, on the paved Meadows in the Sky Parkway would be its Alpe d’Huez. Climbing 1,468m over 16 miles up a 5.6 percent grade, the snaking road incorporates 15 hairpin bends and seven spectacular lookouts before delivering you wide-eyed and legless at the summit. Seasoned road-bikers refer to it as the toughest climb in Canada.

3. Mountain coasters and gondola rides

Opened in 2021, one of the Golden’s newest features is the Skybridge, an adventure complex that takes you on a circuitous walk over Canada’s two highest suspension bridges, slung precipitously over a 420-ft-deep canyon.  

For families, soft-adventurers or those with a fear of heights, stick to the lumberjack-inspired axe-throwing booths, Logan suggests, or try sliding down the mountainside on the Railrider Mountain Coaster, a kind of bobsled meets rollercoaster.

Kicking Horse has plenty to offer those with children in tow. Suspended above the peaks, an enclosed gondola hoists visitors to a staggering 3,700ft, where views stretch out across vast, silent landscapes. Hungry? Head to Eagle Eye Restaurant, the highest in all of Canada, where you can gaze out on four national parks while ordering a bison burger, or the cheesy Canadian classic, poutine. Afterwards, why not visit Boo the grizzly bear at his refuge in Kicking Horse. This 20-acre site was created for orphaned cubs, and is the largest of its kind in the world.

4. Climbing and mountaineering

The Bugaboos, a two-hour drive southwest from Golden, have a mountaineering pedigree going back to the early 1900s when legendary Austrian climbing guide Conrad Kain began wrestling with the rock. Commercial heliskiing was invented here in the 1960s and mountaineers still cherish the range’s huge granite spires surrounded by massive glaciers. “My first climbing trip there was 10 years ago, and I’ve been back every summer since,” says Logan. “The views are breathtaking and unlike anything else in the area.”

Closer to town, Kicking Horse caters for climbing fanatics with a via ferrata, modelled on the fixed protection climbing routes that originated in the Italian Dolomites during the First World War. The guided Ascension route — 1,500ft of cables, bridges, and ladders — is considered one of the most technical in Canada.

Glacier National Park, 40-minutes west of Golden, has been revered by alpinists since its foundation in 1886. Its highest peak? The northwest ridge of 3,284m Mount Sir Donald, considered by many as one of the classic climbs in North America. For experienced rock-climbers, it’s a relatively straightforward ascent using third and fourth class moves before hitting a short stretch of 5.4 grade climbing just shy of the summit. Consider taking one of Golden's mountain guides with you for help on the trickier descent; they know the peaks like the backs of their hands.

5. Epic whitewater rafting

Golden's Kicking Horse River attracts adrenaline seekers from far and wide. The lower section is often closed off, but fear not, the choppy rapids of the upper and middle sections, peaking at class IV, are considered some of the most extreme in Canada, Logan reports. Rafting companies supply you with oars, helmets, and lifejackets, and there are guides available to help navigate the currents.

For those after even more of a thrill, there's the option of heli-rafting, giving adventurers access to Golden's lower canyon, with its vertical cliff sides and serious rapids — and which is completely inaccessible without a helicopter. Hovering low over the river, you'll be dropped gently into the water, before the current picks you up and carry you onwards.

The rafting season runs May to September with June, when rivers are engorged with snowmelt, enjoying the highest water levels.

Golden Getaway Guide: Enjoy Wilderness, Wildlife and Whitecap Summits

Golden is poised to accommodate a wilderness experience that will keep you on your toes, on your pedals, in the stirrups or on the paddle

Residents of Golden (population 4,373) know exactly why they’ve chosen this adventuresome address to call home. It’s the gateway to the Canadian Rocky Mountains, with close proximity to six national parks: Banff, Glacier, Jasper, Kootenay, Mount Revelstoke, and Yoho, which offer just about every exhilarating activity on your agenda.

A good yarn can put a town on the map, and one might jest, this region’s colourful past is recounted straight from the horse’s mouth.

Explorer Sir James Hector was crossing a river in August 1858 when a delinquent horse hoofed him senseless. Thus, the Kicking Horse moniker laid claim to the River and the Pass. The result of a steed’s swift kick would leave anyone breathless, but so, too, will the wilderness, the wildlife, and the whitecap summits of the Rocky, Purcell and Selkirk Mountains.

And of course, the Kicking Horse River and its tenacious drops and deep cut gorge, to its delight, will leave you gasping.

Prepare to be wooed and wowed by these natural attractions, and all the cool finds you’ll experience around town.

Golden Summer Outings and Activities

Golden is cradled by the Rocky Mountains on the north end of the Columbia River Wetlands, stretching 180 kilometres between Golden and Canal Flats. It supports various mammals and over 300 species of protected birds (think granddaddies like osprey, bald eagles, and great blue herons).

Burges and James Gadsden Provincial Park and the Moberly Marshes is a Ducks Unlimited Conservation project; it protects the northern portion of the Columbia River Wetlands. Keep an eye out for deer, elk, beavers, muskrats, river otters and mink, as well as amphibians or reptiles.

Kicking Horse Mountain Resort (KHMR) has the largest grizzly bear refuge in the world. Boo, a cub orphaned by a poacher, has been a resident since 2003.

Mountain biking trails range from wide paths along meandering valleys to steep switchback technical tracks; try Moonraker and Dawn Mountain trail systems and Canyon Creek Trail for novice and experts alike.

Mount 7 is one of the most challenging downhill systems in Canada, with over 4,500 vertical feet of shuttle or heli-access biking, some of which is intermediate, but mostly expert. At Kicking Horse Mountain Resort, take the cushy gondola ride up 2,347 metres and prepare for an epic 10-km-long downhill ride.

Yoho and Glacier National Parks, also known as the Bugaboos, are renowned for climbing and mountaineering. Hiking and heli-hiking can include Confluence Park , Mount 7, and ridge walks at Kicking Horse Mountain Resort; the popular local favourite is Gorman Lake and numerous trails in the surrounding mountains.

The Kicking Horse River (recognized as a Canada’s first Heritage River) is one of the wildest and fastest whitewater rafting rivers in Canada for all levels.

Alpine Rafting offers various packages and rustic riverside camping. Give Catrafting a try: an adrenaline-fuelled whitewater thrill on an inflatable craft with two pontoons and a mesh floor.

If you’d rather be above it than on it, walk the Kicking Horse Pedestrian Bridge (46 metres), the longest freestanding timber frame bridge in Canada. If your inner daredevil is taking a day off, check out the flatwater on a Columbia River Jet Boat Safari ; here you’ll carve through narrow canyons over forgiving and comfortable currents.

Cast your line for large rainbows to char in the Columbia River or small cutthroat trout in alpine lakes. Reel-in giant ling (burbot) and Dolly Varden in the hydro reservoir. Step into the stirrups at Bear Corner Adventures Bed & Bale or Flying W Trail Rides for an unforgettable horseback ride through the Rockies.

Where to Eat and Drink in Golden

Get your java jolt at Bean Bag Coffee to fuel you up for fun. Catch the latest in folk, rock, funk and more at the Rockwater Grill & Bar , a premier music venue on the riverfront in downtown Golden.

Upscale pub classics: grilled steaks, burgers, wings, nachos and pizzas. Eagle’s Eye Restaurant at KHMR is 7,700 feet above sea level.

Classic French techniques include savoury masterpieces: salmon, buffalo, elk and other native cuisine. Whitetooth Mountain Bistro is a good bet for fresh local ingredients, infused martinis, and top-notch wine list. The bistro has a tony yet casual vibe both for couples and families.

Where to Sleep in Golden

With the highest concentration of backcountry lodges in North America, consider bedding down in a remote rustic cottage/cabin where the populated area is off the beaten track.

Mount 7 Lodges is a great base for your bike treks. Blaeberry Cabin is found on 11 acres in the Blaeberry Valley or sleep in a teepee (sleeps up to five) at Goldenwood Lodge . There are campgrounds and RV parks ( Golden Municipal Campground and the Whistle Stop Outpost), motels, hotels, and of course, the home-style hospitality of personalized B&Bs.

The Alpine Meadows Lodge , a 10-room B&B inn set on 150 private acres, is in the heart of the parks with access to Kicking Horse Resort and Golden Golf Club .

Getting to Golden

It’s a 9-hour (711 Km) drive from Vancouver on the Trans-Canada Hwy/BC-1. The highway between Golden and Yoho National Park has been upgraded to a modern four-lane design with a new park bridge over Kicking Horse Canyon.

Golden is approximately a 3-hour drive from both the Calgary International Airport and the Canadian Rockies International Airport based in Cranbrook, BC.

The Golden Visitor Centre is closed for the off-season from September 25th, 2023 to May 2024. Find us at 1000 Trans Canada Highway, Golden BC V0A 1H1  or contact us by phone 250-439-7290 or email:  [email protected]  

We encourage you to visit the centre in the summer to help you make the most of your experience in Golden. During your consultation with a visitor information counsellor, a digital itinerary can be created and emailed to your personal device and additional maps and resources will be handed out upon request. 

Summer Services 2023:

Friendly, welcoming visitor information counsellors will be on hand to help you find information about activities, attractions and accommodations in and around Golden, plus Golden travel guides and maps . Our information counsellors can help you create your own customized itinerary, which can be e-mailed directly to your own device; saving paper, and keeping you travelling light as you experience all that Golden has to offer. Whether you need a map, suggestions for dinner, help planning your trip or to find an activity or accommodation, visitor services in Golden has it covered. 

Pick up trail maps or the Golden Travel Planner , and use the digital kiosks and wifi hotspot to find information about Golden online. Facilities at the Visitor Centre include:

Geneva Tourism is delighted to reveal its 2024 Summer Campaign with the launch of its exclusive Summer Transport Card, which offers discounts on a range of exciting activities. Visitors to Geneva this summer can also be in with the chance of winning a Golden Ticket when they book accommodation in the city between 15 June and 15 September, promising an unforgettable VIP transport experience during their stay.

Having recently been named one of the best places to visit in 2024 by European Best Destinations and the New York Times, Geneva offers the perfect city break this summer. The launch of the Summer Transport Card as part of the 2024 summer campaign promises to further elevate the tourist experience, building on the city’s desire to promote soft mobility. Jennifer Loh's passion for environmental activism began at a young age, fueled by her family's extensive travels and a pivotal moment in third grade. An article in Time Magazine for Kids on global warming sparked her concern for the environment and inspired her to take action. This early awakening marked the beginning of a lifelong commitment to sustainability and conservation.

Fast forward to a post-graduate life, Loh began working at the Hyatt Regency, Maui, where she was a co-chair of The Green Team during the property's LEED certification process. Working closely with the Director of Engineering, she witnessed the diversion of 500,000 pounds of food waste from the landfill and the successful transition to renewable energy sources, particularly solar power. As the hotel implemented various energy-efficient measures, Loh began to wonder why more companies were not embracing such sustainable practices. Reflecting on this experience, she notes, "That was 15 years ago. Hyatt Regency Maui was the first hotel in Hawaii to achieve LEED certification, and since then, 25 more hotels have followed suit." This transformative journey at Hyatt Regency Maui was a pivotal moment for Loh, shaping her commitment to sustainability and leading her to co-found Travaras , a regenerative travel startup dedicated to advancing sustainable practices in the hospitality industry.

As this new concepts emerges, new language follows. A term like "sustainable" has become ubiquitous and runs the path of everything “organic.” "Regenerative" has occasionally been used to describe sustainable practices interchangeably. Regenerative travel, a concept with roots predating its formal definition, asks to consider its unique characteristics compared to sustainable travel. But do they overlap? What distinguishes regenerative travel from sustainable travel?

Co-founder of the travel platform aptly named Regenerative Travel , Amanda Ho defines it in its most simplistic form. ”It’s a type of travel that is an act of restoring, replenishing and renewing the environment and community. It’s a reciprocity of how the destination and hotel provider really looks to actually contribute to a positive impact. It’s the restoration of the bond that we have with communities and nature.”

While the general principles of sustainable and regenerative travel both aim to minimize the negative impact of tourism and promote positive outcomes for the environment, local communities, and emphasize the importance of conservation, resource management, and community engagement, the key difference lies in their approach and scope. Sustainable travel focuses on maintaining the status quo and ensuring that tourism activities do not deplete resources or harm ecosystems. Regenerative travel goes a step further by actively seeking to restore and regenerate the environment, cultures, and communities impacted by tourism. Regenerative travel aims to leave a destination better than it was found, promoting biodiversity, supporting local economies, and fostering cultural exchange and understanding.

Regenerative travel is a relatively new concept within the travel industry and occupies a small but growing portion of the market. While sustainable travel has been more widely adopted and integrated into various aspects of the hospitality and travel industry, regenerative travel is gaining momentum as travelers and businesses become more aware of the need to go beyond sustainability. Regenerative travel also satisfies requests from travelers seeking more immersive and authentic experiences in remote and lightly visited locations.

Legislation has been introduced to assist in moving the agenda forward and is shaping the future of regenerative travel. Notable initiatives such as the Glasgow Declaration on Climate Action in Tourism is one global initiative leading the way. Conceived and signed during COP 26, the 2021 United Nations Climate Change Conference in Glasgow, this declaration commits signees and stakeholders to ambitious goals. One such goal is the commitment to halving emissions by 2030 and achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. To achieve these targets, the declaration outlines five key guidelines among the signatories: measuring, decarbonizing, regenerating, collaborating, and financing. It signals a significant shift in the industry's approach, emphasizing not just sustainability but active regeneration of the environment and communities affected by tourism.

In Hawaii, where legislation now mandates LEED certification for new buildings and offers grants to support regenerative tourism initiatives, the commitment to sustainable practices is clear. This proactive approach not only benefits the environment but also creates opportunities for innovation and entrepreneurship in the tourism industry. An analogy from Lisa Hennessy, Co-Founder and Chief Brand Officer of Travaras, of the travel impact scale resonates strongly, highlighting the importance of moving beyond sustainability towards regenerative practices.

“Regular travel, Hennessy explains, is measured as a "minus," as it often involves taking from the place and its people, leaving it worse off than before. Sustainability, on the other hand, is represented as a "Zero," where travelers aim to leave the place as they found it, without further harm. Regenerative travel, however, is the ultimate goal, measured as a "Plus," where the traveler leaves the destination better than they found it, actively contributing to its regeneration and well-being.

Where once traveling sustainably offered visions of eco-lodges and bare minimum accommodations, companies are redesigning thoughtful and curated experiences for travelers wanting to leave no footprints. As summer travel approaches, the global leaders interviewed here recommend a few compelling destinations to consider for a transformative regenerative travel experience.

Songsaa - After a glorious two week holiday at the Cambodian archipelago, Founder and CEO, Melita Koulmandas, discovered a small island completely covered in trash and a dying ecosystem. She decided to stay and committed to revitalizing the area. With the collaboration of the local community, the area became Cambodia’s first ever marine protected area within 18 months.
