tour de table

Hello, I would like to translate "Tour de table" alone, not "faire un tour de table". I want to add this into a conference program. So "faire un tour de table" is "go around the table", but if I want to write :"9:30am : Tour de table de présentation des participants", how would I translate this? Could I write "Round table for participants introduction" ? Thanks a lot!

Hi, For a program, perhaps, "round table discussion"

Ok, so could I say "9:30am: Round table discussion - Participants introduction" ?

I am not sure what you have in mind. Do the participants just introduce themselves or do they have a discussion?

I think Participants Introduction is sufficient if that's all you mean by the expression.

  • Feb 18, 2008

Indeed, at this point of the seminar, it is just a presentation and not a discussion. Thank you for your input!

  • Mar 13, 2008

I know this has been looked at in other threads but in each case it has been changed into a verb. I would like to keep it as a noun if possible. "tour de table final" "Final observations from each participant" is the best I have come with up.

Your own suggestion sounds pretty good to me. Thinking about it, the only idea I didn't immediately discard was final survey , which is not better than your own suggestion. I'm only offering it in case it leads to something better. As you said, verb forms seem to come more naturally here.

  • Dec 1, 2020

I'm waking this up so many years later. In my context it's in some in-house training slides. The "Tour de Table" is at the beginning so that everyone can introduce themselves, say what they do (so we know why they need this training) and maybe what they're expecting from the training session. My French client has suggested that "Tour de Table" is sometimes used as is in English. I have my doubts, but I'm really struggling for something short. I feel that "Introductions" may be that bit too short. Maybe "Introductions and Expectations" ? Any suggestions welcome.

Locape

Shouldn't 'introductions' be in the singular, since people make one introduction of themselves (name, age, location ?), but can have several expectations? Looking at the above posts, I would say 'participants introduction and expectations', but I'm not a native.

Moderando ma non troppo (French-English & CC Mod)

Hello Striker, I am a trainer, too, but I have never heard the term tour de table used in English. Maybe expats living in France use this with others who are bilingual like them? I would kick off an event like this with an Opening Session: Introductions and Expectations . I don't see the need to make it more complicated than that!

Sounds good @wildan1 - I actually already sent it off... just with Introductions and Expectations. But Opening Session would be a good opener too. Don't know where my client got the idea that Tour de Table could work.

  • Nov 13, 2022

Here I am, late to the party as usual. You can call the participants' self-descriptions at the start of a session the "Icebreaker", or "Who's who".

To me an icebreaker suggests engaging participants through some sort of game or interactive exercise that "warms up" the group or gets people focused on a particular idea or theme. Tour de table is more straightforward than that, I think. Just going around the room and having each person say a few words of self-introduction, briefly explaining their presence or expectations...

tour de table

Comments on the question.

A round table discussion? a round table brain storming session? You've got to be creative and come up with a solution that best fits your context;

Yes I know. But this is an agenda item - it is basically five minutes where they go round the table simply saying hello and getting an idea of people's frames of mind that day. It is not part of the main meeting so to speak, the brain storming sesssion / discussions come afterwards. I guess in a meeting where you don't know anyone it would simply be 'Introductions', but as members already know each other here, it doesn't work.

Sorry if that wasn't clear in my original posting.

' Clear the air' meeting?

Maybe sounds like they've fallen out!

Welcome and greetings?

I guess the next part about the 'météo' is also going to be challenging to translate! Mood weather, mood tracking...I'll open another question for this I think.

Translation: This is not about going round the table so everyone can introduce himself or herself

faire un tour de table=to go round the table; tour de table: Going round the table OR Round table introductions

The term is, nevertheless, going round the table or round table introductions, Alison.

Frankly, I'd be more worried about Méteo. :)

I think that méteo might have been taken from some misinterpretation of some English text with the word temperature in it: Are you feeling hot, cold, i.e. enthusiastic, indifferent. Etc.

méteo= state of mind.

Alison, I'm sorry but it does say going round the table. There is no denying that.

Going round the table and state of mind

...and a roundtable is not the same as a roundtable discussion. In simple roundtable, little discussion takes place. It's the time for everyone to express their views.

Sometimes a roundtable at the start of a meeting is used to to take the "temperature" of the attendees -- see how they feel about the subject being discussed and what their initial positions are. Discussion occurs after the initial roundtable. A final roundtable might take place after the main discussion trails off just to make sure that everyone has a chance to say what's important to them.

Taking the temperature of the attendees taken during an initial "temperature check" or "heat check" is probably relevant to the question.

Google terms like "temperature check meeting" or "team temperature check" for examples.

Yes, as I said before you posted this, I had a feeling it was about temperature and not about the weather, la méteo.

The French says méteo as if it were about weather.....

How people are feeling.
