Around the World in 25 Travel Quilts

I like to make travel quilts inspired by the destinations where I am going. I am sharing some of my favorites to inspire your next quilt project.

My 25 favorite travel quilts

Last Updated on 04/21/22 by Rose Palmer

My website is called Quiltripping because I love to travel, take photos and make quilts. I like to make travel quilts inspired by the destinations where I am going and then photograph the quilt on location. Since I started this blog, I have photographed and shared quite a few of my bucket list travel inspired quilts. I thought it would be nice to put them all together into one gallery for both quilting and travel inspiration.

Get inspired by my favorite travel quilts

“this is africa” – africa.

I was fortunate to be able to visit Kenya twice within 9 months and I loved both experiences. Encountering elephants, zebras and giraffes in the wild has been one of my most memorable travel experiences. I will never tire of seeing and photographing the African wildlife in its natural habitat and look forward to going back again soon.

One side of this quilt is an African designed batik panel that I bordered with other African themed fabric. On the other side, I used a series of small batik printed panels that I purchased in Zanzibar on my first trip to Kenya. I photographed the quilt when I went to Kenya a second time as a volunteer citizen scientist .  Two lovely Masai grandmas are showing one side of the quilt. The other side is being studied by one of the giraffe’s at the Giraffe Conservation Center in Nairobi .

“Under the Midnight Sun” – Alaska, USA

Alaska is one of my favorites states in the US and I have been fortunate to be able to visit a number of times on cruises as well as in the winter to see the northern lights . Most recently, I also visited Fairbanks under the midnight sun , another wonderful and unique experience.

I had made this quilt top a few years ago but was not quite sure how to finish it. Then when I had a trip to Fairbanks, Alaska to experience the midnight sun, that provided my perfect inspiration for finishing this quilt. On the back I used screen printed Alaskan inspired panels that I had purchased in Sitka on a previous cruise to Alaska.

I photographed the rainbow side of the quilt on Chena Dome as part of my visit to the Chena Hot Springs Resort. The back side of the quilt was photographed in Ketchikan with my cruise ship, the Island Princess, in the background.

“Gaudi Inspiration” – Barcelona, Spain

I like to search out interesting architecture in my travels, and for that reason Barcelona was a jewel. Seeing and photographing the colorful and undulating creations designed by Anton Gaudi was a pleasure. When his masterpiece, the Sagrada Familia is finally finished (scheduled for 2026), I will go back to see it again.

I used both definitions of the word “gaudy/Gaudi” to inspire this quilt. Gaudy – as in tasteless ornamentation.  And Gaudi – as in the architect Anton Gaudi known for his mosaic imbedded organically flowing buildings in Barcelona. The quilt was photographed in one of Gaudi’s most famous sights, Park Güell.

“Whoot Do You Love” – Big Bend, Texas, USA

My first visit to Big Bend National Park was in 1992 after I first moved to Texas with my family. I had a chance to visit again more recently and enjoyed it as much as I did the first time. This national park is also a designated International Dark Sky Park which means that when I was there in September, I could clearly see the milky way from horizon to horizon without any nearby light pollution.

This quilt uses some of designer Elizabeth Hartman’s popular quilt patterns. I used up a lot of left over swatches and pieces of fabric for all of the critters on both sides of the quilt. This quilt went with me to Big Bend Texas where I entered it into the Marathon Quilt Show (and it won a first place blue ribbon). I photographed the quilt with all its animals in Big Bend National Park which I thought was quite appropriate.

“Brandywine Flower Walk” – Brandywine Valley, Pennsylvania, USA

When the weather is nice, I like to play in my garden, and in my travels, I also seek out gardens for inspiration . I am fortunate that in the Brandywine Valley of Southeastern Pennsylvania where I live, I  have five beautiful public gardens around me. So it seemed natural to photograph this flowery quilt at Longwood Gardens, one of my favorite gardens in the area. The quilt is designed with many different Kaffe Fasset fabrics in bright shades of pink and yellow. Once again, I used leftover blocks to make the back of the quilt interesting as well.

“Burano Sampler”- Burano, Italy

I love to visit Venice, but I love the little island of Burano in the Venetian Lagoon even more. During the day, Burano is busy with tourists, but early morning and late at night, it becomes blissfully quiet and you have the candy colored houses and canals practically to yourself.

This quilt was inspired by the many little colorful houses on Burano with their striped door coverings and colorful flower pots. For the other side of the quilt I used the leftover blocks in an asymmetric modern setting.

“Kaleidoscope” – Burgundy Canal, France

One of my most amazing travel experiences was a barge cruise on the Burgundy Canal in France with European Waterways . This was the epitome of slow travel in style while being pampered and catered to. The trip was a perfect balance of sightseeing, delicious food and wine combined with plenty of down time to relax.

Though not inspired by my travels, I thought that the colors in this kaleidoscope design would look good against the blue and cream colors of the La Belle Epoque barge. This was the first quilt I ever made about 20 years ago and when I look at this first quilting attempt, it looks very amateurish, but I still like it.

“California Dreamin’ ” – California, USA

There are so many different aspects to California and there is so much to see that I know I have barely touched the surface with my visits to this wonderful state. Still, when you say the word California, it inevitably conjures up images of sun drenched beaches, rolling surf, and a road trips on California State Route 1.

The shades of gold and yellow combined with various shades of blue remind me of the sun and sea on the California coast. I photographed this quilt on the rocky shores of the Monterey Peninsula when I visited the area to take a quilting class with Empty Spools Seminars .

“Aspen Glow” – Colorado, USA

Each fall, my husband and I like to do an autumn trip in search of peak leaf color. Our travels normally take us into the northeastern parts of the US, but we actually had the best fall color experience in Colorado. On our 10 day Colorado road trip we saw beautiful stands of golden aspens at their peak color every day.

I wanted to make a quilt inspired by the colors of the aspen trees in fall, and this quilt really took me out of my comfort zone. I normally gravitate toward bright colors with lots of blues and reds. But for this fall trip to see the golden aspens in Colorado, I needed similar colors in a quilt – which meant golds, grey’s and whites.

In the end I really loved how this quilt turned out and it has become one of my favorites. A lesson learned – I need to experiment with fabrics and colors outside of my usual pallet. Once again, I used leftover fabric and blocks to make an interesting patchwork back.

“My Bohemian Princess Quilt” – Germany

I am of German heritage and when I think of Germany, I think of castles (and beer). Mad King Ludwig’s fairy tale like castle Neuschwanstein inspired Walt Disney’s real fairy tale caste in Disneyland.

For my Germany inspired quilt I wanted whimsical fabric worthy of a fairy tale, and a couple of charm packs from fabric designer Tula Pink fit the bill.  As I like to do, I also made the back interesting. I photographed the front of the quilt at the Hohenschwangau Castle which was King Ludwig’s boyhood home. The back of the quilt was photographed at the ruins of the Ehrenberg castle just across the border in Reutte Austria. I think this quilt turned out perfect for a little princess.

“Turkish Delight” – Istanbul, Turkey

Istanbul is another one of my favorite cities. With 1500 years of history and architecture , great food and friendly locals, what’s not to love. To design a quilt inspired by my Istanbul travels, I looked for fabrics that were designed and inspired by Turkish Iznik tiles and this quilt is my interpretation of a Turkish Iznik tile. For the back, I once again used the leftover fabrics to make a pleasant pattern.

I photographed the quilt at the Topkapi Palace Harem , one of the most interesting and popular sights in Istanbul.

“I’m Turning Japanese” – Japan

Japan is one of my favorite countries to visit and I was fortunate to be there three times during three different seasons (summer, fall and winter), including a visit to the great Tokyo International Quilt Festival .  Despite so many visits, I still feel like I have so much still left to see and experience in this culturally rich country. I like the order, cleanliness and punctuality in Japan and the graciousness and politeness of its people. These characteristics make it very easy and pleasant to be a tourist.

For my Japanese inspired quilt, I used an Oriental themed printed panel which I turned into a kimono design. Japanese themed fabrics are popular for quilting, so it was not hard to find some to coordinate. I photographed the quilt in one of the many Japanese gardens in Kyoto during peak fall color change.

“My Bedouin Desert Blanket” – Jordan

The big draw for me to visiting Jordan was the historic site of Petra where we spent two days. But I discovered that there was so much more to see in Jordan. It is a small country, but it is rich in history and scenic sights. And the people were incredibly warm and welcoming. I especially enjoyed our overnight stay in the deserts of Wadi Rum .

My quilt was inspired by the striped patterns of the blankets and carpets that the Bedouin people make as well as by the colors of a desert sunset. I photographed the quilt in the Wadi Rum desert of Laurance of Arabia fame, among other places.

“Not your Grandfather’s Herringbone” –  London, England

London is one of my favorite cities to visit and fortunately it is often a layover stop on the way to other destinations in Europe. Any season throughout there year, I have always found something fun and interesting to do in London, especially in December when London is decked out for the holiday season.

This herringbone quilt pattern seemed appropriate for a United Kingdom inspired quilt, but I wanted to update it a little bit. Inspired by the brightly colored houses in the Notting Hill area of London, I used a rainbow collection of solids set against a light gray background. (Grey for the usual grey London skies). I also used some of the leftover fabric on the back as well to make it more interesting. Of course, I had to photograph the quilt in Notting Hill.

“Sunset on the Mesa” – Utah, USA

The US southwest is a wonderful tapestry of rock formations and diverse geology. Nowhere is that more evident than in the state of Utah and its National Parks. One of my favorite parks is Arches, where mother nature has sculpted a fantastic landscape of rock skyscrapers, arches and canyons.

This quilt is inspired by the colors and shapes of the southwest. Since I finished it I have not had a chance to visit that part of the country, so a good friend of mine photographed the quilt for me at Arches National Park within view of the iconic Delicate Arch.

“Dutch Treat” – Netherlands

I enjoyed my visit to the Netherlands at the end of summer. The canals and buildings in Amsterdam were interesting and the town of Bruges was fun and quaint to explore. But what I really want to see are the tulip fields in spring and the Keukenhof Garden filled with a tapestry of flowers. Till then, I photographed this quilt made up of windmill blocks with the tulips at Longwood Gardens.

“Quilter on the Orient Express” – Orient Express

For our 30th wedding anniversary, my husband and I treated ourselves to a train trip on the legendary Orient Express from Venice to London. It was one of the most memorable and special experiences we have ever had. To remember this trip, I made a quilt inspired by the royal blue and gold colors of the Orient Express carriages and trimmed the quilt with the colors of the mahogany wood paneled interiors. Every time I look at this quilt, I am reminded of our special anniversary trip.

“I Love Paris in the Springtime” – Paris, France

Sometimes a fabric just speaks to me and I have to have it. That is how I felt about this Paris themed panel. Ultimately I decided to make a design that looked like a window looking out at the Eiffel Tower  with “stained glass” panels on either side.

Whenever I hang up this quilt it always makes me smile and reminds me of my trips to Paris and brings to mind my many memories of the Eiffel Tower .

Of course, I had to photograph it with the icon that it represents.

I Love Paris in the Springtime quilt

“Mama the Llama” – Peru

Our trip to Peru was a top-of-the-bucket list trip. We spent two and a half weeks touring most of the major sights in this beautiful country and had many truly memorable experiences.  The trip was capped off with a tour of Machu Pichu and it was definitely worth the anticipation.

For this trip, a quilt with llamas was appropriate so I used Elizabeth Hartman’s llama pattern. For the back side of the quilt I was inspired by the colorful woven Peruvian blankets. I also used fabric that was inspired by Peruvian weaving designs. I was fortunate that a little llama was quite happy to pose with my quilt.

“Cascade” – Rogue River, Oregon, USA

Oregon is another one of my favorite states. It is also where I did my first overnight rafting trip on the Rogue River.

While I did not make a quilt specifically for the rafting trip, I knew that one of the first quilts I ever made would be perfect to photograph on the trip. This quilt is a bargello design made with 20 different fabrics and to me looks like a mini waterfall. I decided to photograph it at one of the waterfalls we hiked to on the rafting trip.

“In Chihuly’s Garden” – Seattle, Washington, USA

I love the work of master glass artist Dale Chihuly and always look for Chihuly’s works and exhibits when I travel .  When I made this quilt, it reminded me of some of the fanciful glass pieces that Chihuly usually exhibits. It made sense therefore to photograph the quilt in the Chihuly Garden on one of my visits to Seattle. For the back of the quilt I used the same shades of red, pink, orange and yellow batik and cut out a section and turned it upside down.

“Fractured Peaks” – Trento, Italy

I made this quilt for fun, not necessarily with any specific destination in mind. However, when I had a trip planned to Trento, Italy, I felt that was a good location to photograph it. The jagged design reminded me of the dolomite mountains in Italy , which is where Trento is located.

I photographed both sides of the quilt at the Buoconsiglio Castle Museum in Trento where the colors of the fabric perfectly picked up the colors of the marble and frescoes. I used leftover blocks to make a zig zag modern looking design for the back.

“Falling in Love With Venice” – Venice, Italy

Before my first trip to Venice, a friend who had once lived in Italy told me “you will fall in love with Venice” and she was right. My husband and I celebrated our 30th anniversary in Venice and to commemorate that, I made this quilt inspired by the square floor tiles I saw in many of the old buildings. The blues are a nod to the blue and white striped shirts worn by the gondoliers. The red border is a marbled pattern, similar to the marbled paper that Venice is known for. The quilt was photographed on one of the many bridges in Venice.

“In Honor of Valor” – Washington DC, USA

When I made this American Flag inspired quilt, I knew I wanted to photograph it in Washington DC with some of my favorite memorials. Here I photographed it with the Women’s Vietnam Veteran’s Memorial, one of the most moving statues on the Mall in DC, and one of quite a number of statues and monuments dedicated to women in the capital.

In Honor of Valor quilt

“Dutchman’s Puzzle” – Tualatin Valley, Washington, USA

I had not heard of quilt barns (or barn quilts) until I visited the Tualatin Valley Quilt Barn Trail just outside of Portland, Oregon. I later learned that there are barn quilts in all 50 states and in Canada. A barn quilt is a large (about 6 foot square) panel of wood painted with a quilt block design, and hung on the side of a barn or building.

As I explored some of the 60 barn quilts on display along the trail, I discovered one design that was just like the blocks of a quilt I had made. The Dutchman’s Puzzle quilt was a block-of-the month design at a local quilt shop. I was intrigued how different color combinations in the same pattern could make each block look so different. Of course, I had to photograph my quilt with the quilt barn block.

These are many of the quilts I have made to date. You can see all my own designs in this Quilt Gallery .

A big thank you to Cindy Carey of North Start Longarm Quilting who has done the quilting for most of my quilts and makes all my patchwork look so much better with her talents and attention to detail.

Thanks also to my husband who never gets enough credit for often being the location scout for the perfect quilt photo shoot.

I hope these travel quilts inspire you to spread your wings and travel and to expand your creativity with more quilting.

  • Materials Needed

Before diving into the quilting process, gather the following materials:

  • Cotton or quilting fabric in various colors for the world map
  • Background fabric for the quilt top
  • Fabric for the quilt backing
  • Fabric for the binding
  • Batting: A piece of quilt batting that is slightly larger than your desired quilt size
  • Thread: High-quality thread in coordinating colors
  • Cutting tools: Rotary cutter, cutting mat, and ruler
  • Sewing machine: A reliable sewing machine capable of quilting
  • Pins or clips: To secure fabric layers during quilting
  • Iron and ironing board: For pressing fabric and seams
  • Scissors: For trimming threads and cutting fabric
  • Quilting gloves or grip aids: Optional, but helpful for maneuvering large quilt layers
  • Quilting needles: Needles specifically designed for quilting
  • Quilting hoop or frame: Optional, for hand quilting
  • Ruler or template: For creating precise fabric cuts
  • Pencil or fabric marker: To mark quilting guidelines or placement

Make sure to gather all the materials before starting your project to ensure a smooth and efficient quilting experience.

  • Step 1: Choosing Fabrics

One of the most exciting parts of creating a trip around the world quilt is selecting the fabrics that will represent different countries or regions on the world map. Here are a few tips to help you choose the perfect fabrics:

  • Consider the Theme: Decide on the overall color theme for your quilt. You can opt for a vibrant and colorful palette that reflects the diversity of cultures around the world or choose a more subdued and monochromatic theme for a subtle and sophisticated look.
  • Research World Maps: Look for inspiration by studying different world maps online or in travel books. Observe the colors used for different continents or countries and use them as a reference for your fabric selection.
  • Coordinate Colors: Choose fabrics that work well together and create a harmonious color scheme. Consider using complementary colors or different shades of the same color to add depth and interest to your quilt.
  • Prints and Patterns: Mix and match prints and patterns to add texture and variety to your quilt. Consider using fabrics with geometric patterns, floral motifs, or even prints that feature iconic landmarks or symbols associated with different countries.
  • Fabric Types: Opt for high-quality cotton or quilting fabric that is easy to work with and durable. Avoid fabrics that are too thick or stiff, as they may be challenging to quilt.

Remember, there are no strict rules when it comes to choosing fabrics for your trip around the world quilt. It’s all about personal preference and creativity, so have fun experimenting with different combinations until you find the perfect mix that captures the spirit of your global adventure.

  • Step 2: Creating the World Map Block

Now that you have selected your fabrics, it’s time to create the world map block for your quilt. Follow these steps to bring the world to life:

  • Print or Draw a Template: Find a template of a world map that is the size you desire for your quilt block. You can search online or use a world map stencil to trace the outline onto paper or cardboard.
  • Cut Fabric Pieces: Using the template as a guide, cut out the continents and countries from your chosen fabrics. You can either trace the template directly onto the fabric or use the template as a guide while cutting.
  • Arrange and Pin: Lay out the fabric pieces on your background fabric, positioning them to create a cohesive world map design. Once you are satisfied with the arrangement, pin the pieces in place to secure them.
  • Sew the Appliqué: Using a small and tight zigzag stitch or a blanket stitch on your sewing machine, appliqué the fabric pieces onto the background fabric. Be sure to stitch close to the edges of the fabric to securely attach them.
  • Optional Embellishments: If desired, you can add additional details or embellishments to your world map block. This can include embroidery to mark major cities or national borders, or even using fabric markers to add small icons or symbols to represent famous landmarks.
  • Repeat for Multiple Blocks: If you are making a larger quilt with multiple world map blocks , repeat the above steps for each block, ensuring consistency in fabric selection and placement.

Creating the world map block is a crucial step in designing your trip around the world quilt. Take your time with this process to ensure accuracy and precision in representing the countries and continents that hold significance for you.

  • Step 3: Piecing the Quilt Top

With the world map block complete, it’s time to piece the quilt top together . This step involves arranging and sewing together the blocks and other fabric pieces to form the overall design of your trip around the world quilt. Follow these steps to create a stunning quilt top:

  • Layout Design: Determine the layout of your quilt top by arranging the world map blocks and any additional fabric pieces, such as borders or sashing. Consider the size and orientation of each block, and how they fit together to create a visually pleasing composition.
  • Organize and Label: As you finalize the layout, make sure to label each block or section to keep track of their positioning. This will help you maintain the desired arrangement as you begin piecing them together.
  • Join Blocks: Start by sewing the blocks together using a ¼ inch seam allowance. Pin or clip the blocks together to ensure they align properly before sewing. Press the seams open or to one side, according to your preference.
  • Add Borders or Sashing: If desired, add borders or sashing to frame the world map blocks and create a cohesive look. Measure and cut the fabric pieces for the borders, ensuring they fit correctly with the dimensions of your quilt top.
  • Sew Borders or Sashing: Sew the borders or sashing strips to the edges of the quilt top, making sure they are aligned and the quilt top remains square. Press the seams open or to one side.
  • Trim and Square: Once the quilt top is fully pieced, trim any excess fabric or uneven edges to ensure a clean and square top. Use a rotary cutter and ruler to make precise cuts.

Piecing the quilt top is an exciting stage as you start seeing your trip around the world quilt take shape. Be patient and pay attention to detail to create a quilt top that reflects your vision and design choices.

When making a trip around the world quilt, consider using a variety of fabrics to represent different countries or regions. This will add visual interest and diversity to your quilt.

  • Step 4: Adding Borders

Adding borders to your trip around the world quilt not only enhances its visual appeal but also provides structure and framing to the overall design. Follow these steps to add borders to your quilt top:

  • Measure and Cut Borders: Measure the length of each side of your quilt top to determine the dimensions of the borders. Cut fabric strips for the borders according to your preferred width. Keep in mind that wider borders can add a bold and impactful look, while narrower borders provide a more delicate touch.
  • Pin or Clip Borders: Align one border strip with one side of the quilt top, right sides together. Pin or clip the border to the quilt top, ensuring the edges are even and the corners match perfectly. Repeat this process for the remaining sides.
  • Sew Borders: Using a ¼ inch seam allowance, sew the borders to the quilt top, removing the pins or clips as you go. Press the seam allowances towards the borders to reduce bulk.
  • Measure and Cut Border Corners: Measure the width of the quilt top with the attached borders. Cut four squares of fabric to create mitered corners. The size of the squares will depend on the desired finished corner size.
  • Attach Border Corners: Fold each square in half diagonally to create a triangle. Match the raw edges of the triangles with the raw edges of the borders, aligning the edges of the quilt top and the border. Sew the triangles in place and press the seam allowances open or towards the corners.
  • Trim Excess Fabric: Once the borders and corners are attached, trim any excess fabric and square up the quilt to ensure neat and straight edges.

Adding borders to your quilt not only completes the look but also provides an opportunity to incorporate contrasting or coordinating fabrics that enhance the overall design. Take your time to align the borders accurately and sew them with precision to achieve a professional finish.

  • Step 5: Quilting the Layers

Quilting is the process of stitching the layers of your trip around the world quilt together, adding both structural stability and decorative detail. Follow these steps to quilt the layers:

  • Prepare the Layers: Layer the quilt top, batting, and backing fabric together, starting with the quilt top facing up, followed by the batting, and then the backing fabric facing down. Smooth out any wrinkles or creases.
  • Basting: Baste the layers together to hold them in place during quilting. You can use safety pins or temporary adhesive spray to secure the layers, ensuring minimal shifting or puckering as you quilt.
  • Quilting Method: Choose a quilting method that suits your preferences and quilting experience. Options include hand quilting, machine quilting, or a combination of both. Select a quilting design that complements the theme and style of your trip around the world quilt.
  • Quilting Stitches: Use quality quilting thread and needles appropriate for your chosen method. Ensure your tension is balanced, and practice on scrap fabric before quilting on your actual quilt.
  • Quilting Patterns: Consider different quilting patterns such as straight lines, free-motion quilting, or custom designs that follow the contours of the world map blocks. Play with different stitch lengths and patterns to add texture and dimension to your quilt.
  • Work in Sections: Depending on the size of your quilt, you may find it easier to quilt in sections rather than tackling the entire quilt at once. Start quilting from the center and work your way out to minimize the risk of puckering or distortion.
  • Finishing Touches: As you quilt, periodically check the back of your quilt for any puckers or tucks. Smooth out any issues by gently tugging on the layers and adjusting the tension. Trim any excess batting or backing fabric as needed.

Quilting the layers brings your trip around the world quilt to life while providing structural integrity. Take your time with the quilting process, enjoying the journey as you add beautiful stitching to your creation.

  • Step 6: Binding the Edges

The final step in completing your trip around the world quilt is binding the edges. Binding not only gives a polished and finished look to your quilt but also ensures that the layers remain securely together. Follow these steps to bind the edges of your quilt:

  • Prepare the Binding: Cut fabric strips for the binding, ensuring they are long enough to cover each edge of your quilt. The width of the strips can vary depending on your preference and the desired finished look.
  • Join the Binding Strips: If needed, join the fabric strips together using diagonal seams to create one continuous binding strip. Press the seam allowances open for a neater finish.
  • Trim and Fold: Trim the excess batting and backing fabric so that they align with the edge of the quilt top. Fold the binding strip in half lengthwise, wrong sides together, and press it to create a crisp crease.
  • Attach the Binding: Starting on one side of the quilt, align the raw edges of the binding strip with the raw edge of the quilt top. Leave a tail of about 6 inches and begin stitching with a ¼ inch seam allowance. Sew the binding strip in place, mitering the corners as you go.
  • Finishing the Binding: When you reach the starting point, overlap the ends of the binding strip and trim the excess, ensuring a snug fit. Fold the binding over to the back of the quilt and hand stitch it in place using a blind stitch or a decorative stitch.
  • Final Press and Inspection: Once the binding is securely stitched, give your quilt a final press with an iron, ensuring the binding lies flat and the quilt is smooth. Inspect the quilt for any loose threads or imperfections, and trim them as needed.

Binding is the finishing touch that adds durability and a professional touch to your trip around the world quilt. Take your time to sew the binding carefully and accurately, ensuring that the corners are neat and the stitches are invisible on the back of the quilt.

Congratulations! You have successfully completed making your own trip around the world quilt. This quilt not only showcases your love for travel but also serves as a beautiful and meaningful piece of art that can be cherished for years to come.

Throughout this journey, you have learned how to choose fabrics that reflect different countries and regions, create a world map block, piece the quilt top together, add borders for structure, quilt the layers, and finally, bind the edges to give it a finished look.

The process of making a trip around the world quilt requires patience, creativity, and attention to detail, but the end result is a truly unique and personalized masterpiece. Your quilt tells a story of adventure, wanderlust, and the beauty of diversity across the globe.

Remember, quilting is not just about the final product; it’s also about the joy and satisfaction that comes with the creative process. Take pride in your accomplishment and share your quilt with friends and family, who will surely appreciate the time, effort, and love that went into making it.

Now that you have completed your trip around the world quilt, you can continue to explore new quilting projects and techniques, fueling your passion for both quilting and travel. Let your creativity soar as you embark on your next quilting adventure, creating beautiful pieces that reflect the world—and your own unique story—one stitch at a time.

Travels to Esoterra – quilt in AGF Lookbook and free pattern

Hi everyone,

I am so excited and honored to be a part of amazing group of makers who contributed their makes for the newest AGF Esoterra Lookbook , featuring beautiful Esoterra collection by my super-talented friend, Katarina Roccella . I really don’t know how she does it – but every next collection is more beautiful, magical, full of amazing color and stunning design!!!

travel quilt designs

Esoterra has dinosaurs!!! How fun is that?! And in the same time, you might think, maybe a little restrictive…too specific? Actually NOT!!! You can pick to feature fun dinos, but you will also have gorgeous colors and texture, and prints that completely stand on their own and will make amazing projects. And the greens…. the greens are so yummy!!!

As soon as I saw it, for some reason one of my older designs came to mind… I used to call it Squares and Shadows – now that I think abut it, not the most creative name, right?

I made this pattern in several fabric combinations and sizes, but once I saw Esoterra, a whole another set of ideas came. I separated the blocks with some sashing….

And then some different borders too…

So these two emerged to me as the most interesting:

travel quilt designs

After I got Esoterra fabrics, cutting and stitching begun!!

This pattern might look complex but it really isn’t! It is just large squares of the fabrics you want to feature and then some strips of background and accent colors (square frames).

All you need to do is make strip-sets of one of each, background and accent color

travel quilt designs

And then cut them into segments (all stacked here)

travel quilt designs

And then it’s time to arrange it all for each block

travel quilt designs

Here is what goes in each block: ( for a 13.5″ block, finished size)

1. One 9.5″ square

2. Three strip-set segments that are cut at 5″

3. One strip-set segment that is cut at 8″

4. One strip of accent color fabrics that is cut 2″ x 5″

Once you lay out a block, and piece it, it will be 14″ (13.5″ finished), so you dont need many blocks for a nice size quilt. I added some sashing (3″ wide) and with 12 blocks, it is a lap size quilt! Just follow the link below to get a whole pattern and some extra bonus ideas too.

For all the details and instructions, to download the pattern (and some bonus ideas) click HERE

Once I had everything, it was time to decide on a layout – probably the hardest part for me! (for the scientist in me, the “random” thing doesn’t come easy, I guess? 🙂  ). Started with this first one and ended with the one below that – yes?

travel quilt designs

I couldn’t resist some accent color in the binding, hence that faux-piping binding…it is kinda my favorite. How about you? Tried it yet? Just search the name and you will get several good tutorials for it – I used one HERE.

travel quilt designs

After quilting and binding, it was time for some photos!

travel quilt designs

Since it was time to go to work, I took the quilt with me in the car and stopped at the Glen Falls park…

Thank you so much for visiting and I hope you give this pattern a try! If you do, please show me your beautiful creations – tag me at @mvquilts on Instagram or send me an email – [email protected] – I would love to see them!!

I will be back soon with few more projects I made from this fun and beautiful fabric collection. In the meantime, don’t forget the Lookbook – it is just full of amazing projects, patterns, ideas and inspirations!

Hello there! I just love this pattern and would love to make it for my 3 year old grandson, I have just the fabric for it, car and truck prints for the big squares. Do you have pics of this quilt in different colourways? Do you think this pattern is suitable for a little boy? If not, what do you suggest?

Marija

Hi Amina, I think this pattern would be great for the fabrics you described! Specially because the narrow squares around the big squares would look kinda like roads? I definitely think it would be great for a little boy’s quilt! I don’t have any other photos of different colorings but I can really see your vision in my mind.

Dena

7 DIY Travel Bag Patterns So You Can Travel In Style

Have you ever noticed that when you are shopping for various travel bags, there are two options? You can get cheaply made nylon bags or extremely overpriced “bland” looking bags.

But how do we get around these two options? The answer is simple: DIY travel bags.

Today, I want to go over the different types of travel bags and supplies and how to create them, and then show you some beautiful travel bag patterns that you can use to create your traveling accessories.

Page Contents

Types of Travel Bags

Before we jump into the how-to or the patterns list, I want to go over the different kinds of bags categorized as “travel bags.” Remember that this post focuses on travel bags you can create, not factory-made luggage.

  • Jewelry bag
  • Toiletry bag
  • Garment bag
  • Travel tote
  • Backpack

Supplies You Will Need to Make Your Own Travel Bag

The supplies you will need will vary depending on the specific item you are making. The following list will include various notions and supplies you will need to make different travel bags.

  • Travel bag sewing pattern
  • Interfacing for structure
  • Trimming (optional for decoration)
  • Scissors or rotary cutter and mat
  • Sewing machine

How Do You Make a Travel Bag?

Now that we know the different types of travel bags and the supplies we may need to create them let’s go over the steps of making a travel bag.

I recommend using a pattern when doing a project like this since it will have detailed instructions for the different steps. These are essential steps to give you an idea of what’s involved when making a large bag.

  • Step 1: Choose a pattern

When looking for the perfect pattern, you want to make sure you are looking for one that is within your skill level and will meet your traveling needs. There are thousands of travel bag patterns available on the market, so you shouldn’t have a problem finding something that will work for you.

  • Step 2: Cut all fabric and interfacing pieces

The pattern you choose either has specific cutting instructions or may even come with templates you can use to cut the fabric pieces you will need. Remember the age-old tip: “measure twice, cut once.”

  • Step 3: Attach notions to the fabric pieces

Where you add the notions will vary depending on which ones you are using and when the pattern tells you to add them. I wanted to include this so you can think about when you need to add them. There’s nothing more frustrating than realizing you forgot to add a D-ring or other notions and have to take apart part of your project and add it. *Speaking from personal experience*

  • Step 4: Sew the exterior pieces together

The pattern writer will do a great job of explaining how to do this step. Ensure you keep your raw edges lined up at all times to ensure an even seam allowance.

  • Step 5: Create and attach the straps

This is a fun step; you can make straps from various materials like canvas, leather, quilting cotton, denim, nylon strapping, etc. Some patterns will have you attach the straps before you sew the lining and exterior parts together. Others will have you connect them to the exterior first.

  • Step 6: Sew the lining pieces together

This step will be where you add pockets for the bag’s interior and create the lining. I like to use a fun, funky fabric inside my bags. It gives it a little more personality and pizazz.

Tip: If you use a weekender bag pattern and want a sizeable wide-open bag, you can skip creating a lining. To conceal the raw edges of the exterior parts, take bias tape and sew it along all the raw edges. This will give the bag a more finished look; plus, when you wash it, the edges won’t unravel.

  • Step 7: Sew the lining and exterior parts together

This final step is always exciting since you see the entire bag come together. Follow the instructions in the pattern you’ve used to complete the bag. Once you’ve finished the bag, take a moment to admire your work and show it off to your friends and family!

7 Travel Bag Patterns For You To Peruse

For this compilation, I tried to find a good selection of travel bag patterns to give you a glimpse into what is possible with a bit of fabric, thread, and imagination. Without further ado, let’s dive into this fun collection!

  • Rollie Pollie Organizer

floral makeup travel bag patterns

You can use this fun little organizer to store all kinds of things for your trip, from toiletries to makeup to jewelry. This toiletry bag sewing pattern includes instructions and templates to create this unique roll-up organizer. It features four removable pouches, and the pattern has instructions for three different sizes. The skill level for this project is intermediate.

  • Convertible Travel Bag

convertible backpack travel bag patterns

How cute is this convertible bag? This bag would be great if you are planning a day trip to the city or if you want to take your laptop to the local coffee shop to do some work. The maker of this bag used an existing messenger bag pattern and made some changes to the straps to make it convertible. The straps can be used either as a messenger bag or backpack.

  • DIY Easy Makeup Bag

Here is a free tutorial to make this cute pleated makeup bag. The maker gives a supplies list, written instructions with photos, and a YouTube video to accompany the tutorial. The finished bag will measure approximately 9”x5”x5”, the perfect size for travel.

  • Retro Travel Bag

two black and white duffle bags travel bag patterns

I found this pattern on Etsy in the shop PolkaDotChair. The pattern will show you how to create your duffel bag that measures 20”x11”x6”. The pattern includes templates and gives you three different strap options depending on what look you are going for with your bag.

  • Got Your Back 2.1

This backpack pattern might be the right choice if you like to travel light. The backpack has multiple pockets to store items and keep your things organized while traveling and has a convenient handle on top if you don’t want to put it on your back while walking around. The finished size of the backpack is 14”x12”6”.

  • Divide and Conquer

This pattern is perfect for those who like to organize their belongings while traveling. There are two size options for you and optional straps for carrying. You could use this bag for toiletries, makeup, craft supplies, electronics, kid’s toys, etc.

  • Townsend Travel Bag

pink weekender bag travel bag patterns

This beautiful bag can be made using the Townsend Travel Bag sewing pattern. You can tell the designer pays attention to detail by the professional finishes of this bag. Adding the train case bottom is a massive bonus if you need to bring shoes or other bulky items with you. You can use it for an overnight bag, carry-on, diaper bag, or gym bag, to name a few options. The final measurements of this bag are 16”x13”x6”.

I hope you enjoyed this group of travel bag patterns. I want to make a complete set of luggage for my next trip! How about you? Which bag was your favorite? Let me know in the comments below.

Happy Stitching!

98 Free Quilt Patterns for Beginner to Experienced Quilters

The patterns in this handy index are illustrated in gallery format to help you preview the designs. To view larger images, start with the first page and step through the gallery one page at a time.

Whether you're an advanced quilter or just starting out, there's a pattern in this list for you.

Make a Bright Pathways Quilt

Try one of my free quilt patterns the next time you're looking for a new quilting project.

My quilt patterns always include step-by-step instructions and illustrations that show you just how easy it is to make a quilt. Even if a pattern looks complex, I encourage beginning quilters to choose any project in the archives.

Some rectangular quilts are skewed or cropped to squares in the thumbnail view. Click on an image to see the actual quilt.

More Patterns

For hundreds of individual block patterns, try my quilt block patterns archives. Many of the patterns include instructions for multiple blocks and entire quilts. This on-point bed sized quilt is shown in red, white, and blue, but the design will work just as well sewn in any theme.

Bright Pathways Quilt Pattern

Colors of Summer in the Garden Lattice Quilt Pattern

This easy quilt finishes at about 66-1/2" x 81". Blocks are on point, with the appearance of sashing, but you won't have to sew the sashing into long strips. Instead, each quilt block is framed, and the frames create an automatic sash.

Try a Scrappy X's and O's Quilt

An X's and O's quilt can be varied in many ways, and you'll find several options in this easy quilt pattern. Three quilt sizes are included, along with instructions that make it a simple task to create quilts with different dimensions.

X's and O's Quilt Pattern

Sew an X's and O's Baby Quilt with Sashing

This X's and O's baby quilt has a much different look than my scrappy X's and O's quilt . In the baby quilt, both shapes are easy to see. Sashing makes the shapes more visible, and sewing the dark areas of each letter with just one fabric makes the shapes pop, too. X's and O's is an easy quilt, and you'll find instructions for two sizes.

Sew an On Point Chariot Wheel Quilt

Chariot Wheel is a good pattern choice for a guy's quilt but can be altered for a more feminine appearance.

Use my Star Crossed Nine Patch quilt pattern to make a quilt with lots of visual movement -- courtesy of the no-waste Flying Geese units in its blocks.

Sew My Easy Framed Four Patch Quilt

This four patch quilt is easy to sew, and you can make it unique by varying the fabrics used in the layout.

The quilt shown here flip-flops the colors of the double frames that surround four patches. Take a look at page 5 to see an example of the quilt with frame colors in the same position throughout.

Make an Interlocking Chains Quilt with Sashing

Each Interlocking Chains block in this quilt is surrounded by patchwork sashing, and the sashing extends to form a border. Sew additional borders (or quilt blocks) to increase the size of this 56" x 56" quilt.

Recreate a Friendship Quilt Sewn in 1852

This vintage-inspired project is just as suitable for contemporary fabrics as it is for reproductions of textiles from the era (1852). The quilt is owned by the Los Angeles County Museum of Art (LACMA), and the photo is in the public domain.

Get Colorful with the Carnival Pinwheels Quilt Pattern

My colors are bright, but this 64" x 88" pinwheel quilt can be sewn in fabrics to suit any theme.

Stitch a Free and Easy Rail Fence Quilt

Rail Fence quilts can be strip pieced with ease, and after patchwork is cut from the strip sets you'll discover all sorts of potential layouts. The example above is a traditional configuration, but by no means the only way to arrange blocks.

Give this easy quilt pattern a try the next time you need a quick quilting project. The quilt finishes at about 73" x 85", but is easy to create other size needs.

Easy Rail Fence Quilt Pattern

Looking for something smaller, try my Rail Fence Baby Quilt Pattern

Make an Easy Double Four Patch Scrap Quilt

This easy quilt can be sewn as a scrap quilt project or configured to be quite orderly... your choice. Quilt blocks finish at 8" x 8" and the quilt shown is 40" square. Need a larger quilt? Simply sew more quilt blocks.

Easy Double Four Patch Scrap Quilt Pattern

Try My Floating Nine Patch Baby Quilt Pattern

You might think this baby quilt pattern looks difficult, but it's actually a very easy quilt to put together. Nine patch quilt blocks are alternated with Snowball blocks, all placed on point .

One reason it appears more complex is likely the quilt's setting triangles , which are created from patchwork (half and quarter nine patch blocks) rather than cut from a single piece of fabric.

Monkey Wrench Quilt, Sew a Baby Size or Mini

I've written two versions of this Monkey Wrench quilt pattern. One is a miniature quilt that finishes at 23" x 29". The other is larger, a Monkey Wrench baby quilt that measures 38" x 47"

Make either or both of the quilts -- a miniature version of a quilt for a baby would make a wonderful coordinating wall hanging.

Try My Easy Crafty Windows Quilt Pattern

Some of my Facebook followers decided this quilt looks like plaids. A few others like its window-like look, especially since it's somewhat reminiscent of the windows we see in Craftsman styled homes.

Change the quilt's appearance in any way you like, and sew more blocks to increase its size.

Crafty Windows Quilt Pattern

Linked Stars Quilt

This easy quilt is made by alternating two traditional patchwork quilt blocks. The blocks finish at 10" square and overall the quilt measures 65" x 85". It's easy to alter the quilt's size by changing the number of blocks sewn. Quick piecing techniques are used for assembly.

Linked Stars Quilt Pattern

Ornate Stars Quilt Pattern

Ornate Stars is a quilt pattern that works nicely for a Christmas themed quilt but is perfectly suitable for any other theme you choose. The quilt finishes at about 60" x 84", but can be altered to suit any size.

In this layout, portions of the background 'drop out,' giving the quilt a trellis-like appearance.

Civil War Quilt Pattern

My Civil War quilt pattern is an example of a strippy quilt, a quilt that's sewn into horizontal or vertical rows separated by long strips of sashing (or other components). This quilt illustrates a vertical strippy design.

Civil War reproduction fabrics inspired the design, but it will work equally well with any type of theme.

Christmas Row Quilt Pattern

Here's a Christmas quilt pattern made from six different horizontal rows. Quilt blocks vary in size and so do the number of blocks per row. Some rows are applique, but I've included links to holiday-friendly patchwork designs for anyone who'd like to insert patchwork substitutes.

Learn How to Make a Puff Quilt

You might know these comfy quilts as either biscuit quilts or puff quilts. Mary Jane Cardwell wrote a puff quilt pattern for us, using a method that will help you put your projects together more quickly than is possible with the traditional technique.

Indian Hatchet Rag Quilt

If you're ready to make a rag quilt with some angles, rather than a mix of square and rectangular shapes, try my Indian Hatchet rag quilt pattern . Like other rag quilts made using my favorite rag quilting method , it requires no quilting (and goes together quickly, even with the triangles).

These comfy quilts are perfect for babies and warm lap quilts, but they also work nicely for beds that our furry friends love.

Amish Baskets Quilt Pattern

Make 15" square basket quilt blocks in traditional Amish style, or vary your fabrics for a slightly Amish look. The quilt block pattern includes instructions for single quilt blocks (perfect for scrap quilts), but on page 3 you'll find directions to help you make the 63" x 63" quilt illustrated here.

Slightly Amish Basket Quilt Pattern

Amish Style Miniature Quilt Pattern Here's a little miniature quilt, a double nine-patch sewn in the Amish style. The quilt finishes at about 25-1/2" square. You can make it much scrappier if you like, and you can go wild with color combinations to brighten it up. Do what feels right to you.

Attic Windows Quilt with a Touch of Applique

Attic Ribbons is a 70" x 94" quilt made from 12" Attic Windows quilt blocks. Some of the blocks feature applique motifs, but you can eliminate the applique if you wish, or use one of my easy suggestions to simplify construction while still adding a bit of variety to the windows. Use different colors to create your own unique theme.

California Hourglass Quilt Pattern

There are dozens of quilt block patterns buried within instructions for entire quilts, making them more difficult to find. This set of patterns is the result of an experiment -- two separate block patterns that you can use for any purpose, each linked to the entire quilt that's made from both .

Finished quilt size: 68" x 95 (add blocks and/or borders to increase size)

Sew a Warm and Cozy Chains Quilt

Free Quilt Patterns

Here's a trio of patterns -- two quilt blocks that can be assembled individually, for any project you like, and a large quilt that incorporates both designs (shown above). The blocks finish at 10-inches square and the quilt measures about 70" x 90". Add borders or alter the block count to make a quilt of a different size.

Both quilt blocks are easy to assemble -- no triangles, just straight-sided patches that can be rotary cut and strip pieced. The "chain" configuration emerges in the diagonal pathways of the quilt.

Make a Sailboats Quilt

The Boats at Sea quilt pattern is assembled with two different Sailboats quilt blocks, one with a boat that sits on a strip of water and the other with a boat that rests at the bottom of the block. Using the boats together gives the quilt a bit of up-and-down movement.

Dark vertical sashing bars separate blocks in individual rows and lighter sashing strips are used horizontally between the rows. Cornerstones are cut from a medium value fabric.

You can also use the quilt block patterns to make individual blocks -- perfect for scrap quilts or block swaps. Refer to the quilt pattern for yardages and cutting instructions for an entire quilt. Blocks finish at 12-inches square.

Woven Logs Quilt Pattern

Woven Logs is an easy-to-assemble patchwork quilt block that gives you a chance to try out the partial seams technique. If you haven't sewn a quilt block with partial seams, you might be surprised at just how simple it is.

Each Woven Logs quilt block finishes at 10" square. You can make a very orderly quilt or go super-scrappy with the layout. I've included strip piecing instructions, plus yardages and cutting info for a 60" x 80" quilt.

Bird's Nest Quilt Pattern

The same three fabrics are used in each of the patchwork blocks used in this quilt. The quilt finishes at about 50" x 70". The pattern includes instructions for individual blocks -- see page 4 to make the entire quilt.

Improved Four Patch Quilt Block and Quilt Pattern

The Improved Four Patch quilt block is made up of a four patch central unit set on point and then surrounded by triangles. It's an easy patchwork quilt block that's suitable for quilters of every skill level, even beginners. The block finishes at 11-1/4-inches square, and you'll find instructions and fabric requirements for single blocks and for the quilt shown above.

Improved Four Patch Quilt Pattern

Double Nine Patch Quilt Block & Quilt Pattern

This blocks in this colorful Double Nine Patch quilt are assembled using a slightly different color value layout in the small corner nine patches than is typical of the traditional design. The block finishes at 11-1/4" square and can be assembled quickly by strip piecing.

Double Nine Patch Quilt Pattern

Five Patch Chain Quilt Pattern

Five Patch Chain is a quilt block that can be used to create a dramatic diagonal movement across the face of your quilt.

All pieces in this patchwork quilt block are cut along the straight grain -- no stretchy bias edges means it's super easy to assemble. The quilt block finishes at 10" square, and the quilt pattern includes 18 Five Patch Chains alternated with Snowball blocks.

Bonnie Scotsman Quilt Block & Quilt Pattern

Bonnie Scotsman is assembled with straight grain bars and squares -- no stretchy bias edges to deal with, and that means it's definitely a beginner-friendly patchwork quilt.

You'll find instructions for assembling the quilt blocks one patch at a time, which is perfect for scrappy quilts, and also a strip piecing option for anyone who wants to make a batch of identical blocks.

I've included two layout suggestions for 35 blocks (plus yardages), but many more arrangements are possible for this versatile design.

  • Bonnie Scotsman Quilt Pattern
  • Try Scots On Point , a Sew and Slice quilt made with Bonnie Scotsman quilt blocks
  • Go entirely scrappy with my Sew and Slice Bonnie Scotsman quilt block pattern

Greek Cross Quilt Pattern

Greek Cross quilt blocks are all about color value. You can dramatically alter their appearance by shifting value positions within the block.

I've included drawings to illustrate some of the differences and included a quilt suggestion, along with yardages and extra instructions, of course. Such a simple block, but one that can be either traditional or dramatic, depending on your fabric choices.

This 15" version of the Wishing Ring helps you make a large quilt in no time at all. Blocks this size are versatile, and can be used for bed quilts, throw pillow covers, medallion quilts and more.

Framed Sixteen Patch Quilt Pattern

The traditional name of this quilt block is Coffin Star, not the most upbeat name for a design. But the block is lovely and finishes at 12" square. It's constructed by surrounding a scrappy 16-patch center with setting triangles . My example is filled with bright pinks and purples flanked by gray, but you can personalize your quilt by changing the fabric theme.

I've included yardages and one potential layout for the quilt shown above.

Coffin Star Quilt and Quilt Block Pattern

Make a Framed Friendship Stars Quilt with Sashing

Framed Friendship Stars quilt blocks finish at 12-inches square, and can be assembled with quick piecing techniques. You'll find the quilt layout suggestion on page 4 of the block pattern, along with yardages to make the quilt shown.

You might notice that the quilt block is much like the traditional Milky Way design, but its half square triangles are arranged a bit differently.

Framed Friendship Stars Quilt Pattern

Sew a Lovely Unequal Nine Patch Quilt

This Framed Unequal Nine Patch quilt block finishes at 12-inches square and is made with batik fabrics in shades of brown and teal. It's easy to assemble, with straight-edge patches that let you avoid the stretchy bias edges created by triangles.

I've included instructions and yardages for an on-point wallhanging, but you can easily make modifications to create a quilt of any size.

Batik Unequal Nine Patch Quilt Pattern

Philadelphia Pavement Quilt Block and Quilt Pattern

The Philadelphia Pavement block used in this quilt finishes at 10-inches square. The design is made up of a Shoo Fly center surrounded by sashing bars and corner squares.

The pattern includes an option for assembling the blocks one patch at a time, and another for strip piecing if you prefer that method. You'll also find yardages and instructions for the quilt shown here.

Philadelphia Pavement Quilt Pattern

Double Four Patch Quilt in Pink and Orange

Stitched in focal fabrics of pink, rose and orange, this Double Four Patch quilt is sure to be an attention-getter. The pattern includes instructions for single quilt blocks and an entire quilt.

Broken Dishes Quilt Pattern

This quilt is made from a patchwork block that's a variation of the design often referred to as Broken Dishes. Its center, made from four half square triangle units, is the layout that typically comes to mind when we hear that name.

Use this free quilt pattern to make single blocks finishing at 15" square, or sew the quilt illustrated above.

Broken Dishes Quilt and Quilt Block Pattern

Hopscotch Quilt Pattern

The Hopscotch Quilt is a bit larger than a typical crib quilt, but still a good size for a baby or toddler. The quilt contains no triangles so it's an easy quilting project for beginners who might want to stick to straight edge pieces of fabric.

Hopscotch Baby/Toddler Quilt Pattern

Sawtooth Stars Quilt Pattern

Many, many years ago my sister, Carol, began making a pink and orange quilt. Sadly, it wasn't finished when she passed away. I have the pieces, though, tucked away until I feel I can dig in and combine colors in the same way she did. An artist, colors were always her strong point.

She introduced me to the pink/orange look, which I've incorporated into the Cheddar and Pink Sawtooth Stars quilt, which is a bit more subdued and also sewn with the additional of green. You say you aren't a fan of orange and pink combos? Then simply change the colors to suit your tastes.

Sawtooth Stars Quilt

Strippy Set Dutchman's Puzzle Quilt

Make 35 quilt blocks to assemble a strippy set look quilt like this example, with blocks that appear to be sewn into vertical columns. It's a very good pattern for scrap quilts.

Each block's color value (contrast) arrangement is split vertically, and deviates from the norm, with a dark background in one-half of the block and a light background in the other. The pattern walks you through the construction of two quilt blocks, and although they have the same components, they're sewn together in different ways.

Dutchman's Puzzle Quilt Pattern

A Walk Through the Maze Quilt Pattern

A Walk Through the Maze is a bed quilt made from two traditional patchwork quilt blocks, Christmas Star and Single Chain and Knot. Only four fabrics are used, and colors link to create a somewhat circular motion across the quilt. Change the fabrics for a completely different look.

Try a black background instead of using the light fabric shown, and replace the remaining colors with bright fabrics that contrast with the black.

Illinois Road Quilt Pattern

Illinois Roads is made from two different quilt blocks, the traditional patchwork Illinois Road and a variation of the Calico Puzzle design. The pattern helps you make the square quilt sewn here, but it's easy to switch to a rectangular layout if you like. The quilt is perfect for a scrappy layout that uses bright fabrics for the small pinwheel-like units in the Illinois Roadblock.

Hula Twist Quilt Pattern

Hula Twist is a quilt made with 12" square blocks. Two traditional designs are used, the Friendship Star and the Eccentric Star. The blocks link together to give the quilt a bit of twist, helped by the very light background that allows the "legs" of the Eccentrics to move forward.

The quilt finishes at 72" x 92", but you can adjust its size by playing with border numbers and dimensions.

Ohio Star Quilt Pattern

This quilt is sewn with a couple of blocks -- one is the traditional Ohio Star. Its color values are altered slightly and the block is placed on point -- both actions that change the Ohio Star's appearance.

Make the 48" square wallhanging for yourself or when you need a gift. The quilt goes together fairly quickly, and its theme can be altered dramatically by simply changing the fabrics.

Ohio Star Wallhanging Pattern

Whirlpools Baby Quilt Pattern

The Whirlpools baby quilt goes together pretty quickly and might come in handy if you need a last minute gift.

The quilt is made with one traditional block sewn in two different colorways. Blocks are assembled entirely with quick pieced flying geese units, but using two different methods. With one technique, you'll sew small squares to a larger square to create the geese, and with the other method, you'll start with rectangles.

Cozy Chains Quilt Pattern

Cozy Chains is a layout that's somewhat like my Easy Framed Nine-Patch Quilt. The two are made with different quilt blocks but are similar in that the same block is used throughout in two different colors to create definition where the blocks are sewn together.

The Cozy Chains quilt has dark squares than run diagonally through all of the blocks, adding another bit of visual texture.

Choose Fall Colors to Sew an Autumn Leaves Quilt

Each block in this quilt is made from four small maple leaf units separated by sashing and a center cornerstone. Alternate blocks are Snowballs with deep red corners that link with the maple leaves to create the diagonal flow. This large quilt finishes at 82" x 110".

Autumn Leaves Quilt Pattern

Framed Nine Patch Quilt Pattern in Two Sizes

I've included instructions for two sizes with this pattern, a bed quilt made with 10" square blocks and a baby quilt made with 5" square blocks.

Easy Framed Nine Patch Quilt Pattern

Here's a Monkey Wrench baby quilt pattern that measures about 38" x 45". Made with 6" square blocks, it's pretty simple to construct.

Sashing and cornerstones separate the scrappy blocks, which are sewn in brightly colored, warm patchwork set on a dark brown background. Simply change the color scheme if you'd like to give the quilt a different appearance.

Make an Easy Holiday Ribbons Wallhanging

Holiday Ribbons includes a pattern for a 30" square quilt, along with a coordinating table runner and placemats.

Holiday Ribbons Quilt Pattern & Accessories

Make a Harvest Stars Quilt

You'll see toasty brown fabrics, plus green, black and red in this 72" x 96" quilt made from two different quilt blocks. The blocks appear to be set on point, but they're actually sewn side by side in a straight setting.

Harvest Stars Quilt Pattern

Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt Pattern

Hearts 'n Rags is an easy rag quilt pattern, one that you can assemble pretty quickly. The quilt is made with a combination of block types: squares with raggy heart applique, plain floral squares, blocks cut from a border print and another unit created by sewing two bars together.

My quilt is lightweight, with no batting, but I've provided yardage and cutting instructions for a middle layer if you choose to add it.

Hearts 'n Rags Rag Quilt Pattern

Stars Through the Windows

My Stars Through the Windows quilt pattern is assembled with two quilt blocks, Snowball, and a four patch variation. Both blocks are easy to sew and perfect for a first quilting project.

Use the open areas to create an I Spy quilt .

Stars Through the Windows Baby Quilt Pattern

Midnight Blues Quilt Pattern

Click through to see a large image of the Midnight Blues quilt (the thumbnail doesn't offer a good preview of the layout). I like this quilt, because when it's put together the quilt blocks, sashing, and cornerstones flow into each other, creating what I'll call sub-blocks .

Midnight Blues finishes at 59" x 79".

Midnight Blues Quilt Patten

Cathedral Windows Rag Quilt Pattern

It's easy to create your own size and layout for the Cathedral Windows rag quilt, but if this is your first rag quilt, be sure to read Rag Quilt General Instructions before you begin.

I've seen this design referred to in other ways, including 'circle rag quilt.'

Under the Stars Quilt Pattern

Under the Stars is a quilt made with 35 of the same quilt blocks but in two color variations.

Jewel Box Quilt Pattern

I've added a few options to the popular Jewel Box quilt pattern — instructions for one-at-a-time blocks, plus extra directions at the end for enough blocks to make an entire (scrappy, but quick pieced) quilt.

Summer Dragon Quilt Pattern

This version of the Summer Dragon quilt finishes at 69" x 90". Adjust its size by changing the width of borders, adding more borders than shown or by eliminating borders altogether.

Summer Dragon Bed Quilt Pattern

Oriental Courtyards Quilt Pattern

Oriental Courtyards finishes at about 65" x 85". The quilt is made with two blocks, Snowball and a block I named Courtyard.

Springtime Ribbons Quilt Pattern

Springtime Ribbons was designed for breast cancer awareness fabrics, but feel free to change its theme to suit your needs.

Framed Nine Patch Quilt

The Framed Nine Patch finishes at 45-1/2" x 60-1/2", so it's larger than most baby quilts, but works perfectly as baby becomes a toddler.

New: Framed Nine Patch Baby Quilt Pattern

Grandma's Favorite Quilt and Quilt Block Pattern

Grandma's Favorite quilt blocks finish at 10" square, and the pattern includes instructions and yardages for a 50" x 50" quilt.

Grandma's Favorite Quilt Pattern

Card Trick Quilt Pattern

Card Trick quilt blocks go together easily. The 9" blocks in this Card Trick quilt are separated by sashing and cornerstones  and surrounded by a wide border.

The quilt finishes at 63-1/2" x 84-1/2".

Starry Night Quilt Pattern

Starry Nights is a strippy set quilt pattern sewn with Pinwheel and Snowball quilt blocks that finish at 8-inches square. The quilt measures about 72" x 104".

Starry Nights Strippy Set Quilt Pattern

Snowballing Economy Quilt Pattern

This easy quilt finishes at about 54" x 70", and is made by combining two traditional patchwork quilt blocks: Snowball and Economy.

Christmas Orchard Quilt Pattern

Christmas Orchard is made from Snowball and Practical Orchard quilt blocks.

Rocky Glen Quilt Pattern

Rocky Glen is a quilt pattern that will give you lots of practice making half square triangle units -- the only patchwork used in the quilt.

Double Stars Quilt Pattern

The Double Star Quilt is made from 20 quilt blocks that are separated by sashing and cornerstones .

Holiday Harvest Quilt Pattern

Holiday Harvest is a quilt that combines 10" Grape Basket blocks with applique Oak Leaf and Acorn blocks. Two options are included for the applique, one a bit more simple than the other.

Eight Hands Around Quilt Pattern

Eight Hands Around is a quilt that finishes at about 68" x 80", with blocks measuring 12" square. It's easy to change the theme -- just choose different fabrics.

Pineapple Quilt Pattern

My pineapple quilt pattern is assembled with thirty-five 9" pineapple quilt blocks. Two color layouts are used in this illustration, but you can sew identical blocks for a more traditional layout.

Got Blues? - One Color Quilt Pattern

We did a poll awhile back that asked, Which Color Stacks Are Tallest at Your House? . Guess what the overwhelming answer was -- yep, you got it -- blue. So here's a monochromatic blue quilt to help you use up your stash.

The blocks in this quilt pattern are 10" square and the quilt finishes at about 55" x 69". Change the look if you'd like. Use bright juvenile prints for a child's quilt or go a little softer for a baby quilt. How about batiks? Or maybe white and black prints with a touch of red.

Got Blues? Quilt Pattern

Patriotic Quilt Pattern That's Perfect for Picnics

Here's a quilt that measures about 66" square, a perfect size to take along on picnics or July 4th celebrations. Use flannel for the batting to get by with minimal quilting stitches since good old flannel stays intact in the wash. T

The fabrics illustrated work with a U.S. patriotic theme, but the pattern itself is generic -- try juvenile prints, florals, batiks, reproductions -- anything goes.

Waving the Flag - Free Quilt Pattern

Missouri Puzzle Quilt Pattern

I'm from Missouri, so I thought it was about time I came up with a quilt pattern that shows off one of the blocks named to commemorate the state. This one's the Missouri Puzzle, a square quilt with sashing and cornerstones between blocks.

The quilt blocks finish at 11-1/4" square and the quilt itself measures about 66" x 66".

Spring Pinwheels Quilt Pattern

The Springtime Pinwheels quilt is made from a combination of two quilt blocks:

  • Pinwheel in a Square and Mosaic Pinwheels .

Quilt blocks are alternated from row to row to create a secondary design when blocks are joined. The layout makes it look like blocks are placed on-point , but they're actually sewn together horizontally.

Quilt blocks finish at 8-inches square and the quilt measures about 53" x 69".

Springtime Pinwheels Quilt Pattern

Friendship Star Quilt Pattern - 6" Quilt Blocks

Friendship quilts have been popular forever, but they don't all have signature panels like the centers of these 6" patchwork star blocks. The blocks are easy to make and the dark star tips and center bars don't require much fabric at all -- it's an excellent pattern to help you use up your scraps.

If you'd rather make the quilt all by yourself, use the signature panels to honor family members, or sew a darker strip in that slot if you'd prefer to do away with signatures.

Little Friendship Stars Quilt Pattern

Marina Blues Quilt Pattern

Marina Blues is a 68-inch square quilt made with two different quilt blocks. It was inspired by a model home I toured many, many years ago -- all teals and blues and sea-greens, with a crystal clear blue-lined pool outside the back door -- a perfect match for the Florida beach town it sat in.

Snail's Trail Quilt Pattern

I like the neutral theme of this Snail's Trail quilt, but the pattern will look good sewn with any contrasting fabrics you choose.

The 9-inch quilt blocks are constructed with two different fabrics, one a light neutral and one dark. The quilt measures about 70" x 77".

Snail's Trail Quilt Pattern

Vintage Chains Quilt Pattern

I rarely sew with solids, but this is a pattern I might consider for an Amish style quilt, combining deep navy or black with brighter colors. To make the quilt, you'll sew batches of two different blocks, and then place them on point and add a couple of borders.

The quilt finishes at about 84" x 98".

Sunbonnet Sue and Overalls Sam Quilt Pattern

The Here's My Heart quilt pattern explains how to make a 64" x 84" quilt that's a combination of patchwork and appliqué.

Floral Rag Quilt Pattern

This easy 2-block rag quilt pattern is perfect for floral fabrics. Its border is pieced from scraps of all fabrics used.

Floral Rag Quilt Pattern (2 sizes)

Easy Four Patch Rag Quilt Pattern

Rag quilts are super soft and cuddly -- and one of the easiest types of quilts you'll ever make once you get accustomed to putting wrong sides together when you sew. Change the theme of this easy rag quilt to make it suit your needs.

Make a Denim Quilt

You don't need a special quilt pattern to sew a denim quilt, but denim's heavy weight means that some quilting patterns are easier to assemble than others.

King's Crown Quilt Pattern

The King's Crown quilt block used in this quilt pattern finishes at 8-inches square.

The pattern includes instructions for single blocks, plus yardages and the extra details you need to construct a small quilt with King's Crown blocks on-point.

Scrappy Hearts Quilt Pattern

You'll find instructions for this scrappy hearts quilt on the last page of the pattern for the 6" heart block.

Grandmother's Choice Quilt

This quilt uses a variation of the Grandmother's Choice quilt block, each sewn with four pinwheel units separated by sashing .

Grandmother's Choice Quilt Pattern

Ocean Waves Quilt Pattern

Ocean Waves is a quilt pattern that's packed with half square triangle units . The quilt isn't difficult to make, but it does have lots and lots of pieces.

The Ocean Waves quilt pattern is perfect for scrap quilt s, but looks great sewn in an orderly fashion, too. If the number of patches the quilt requires seems like more than you want to take on, just assemble a small batch of the units each time you sit down to sew. Accumulate them in a box, keeping track of how many you add each time.

For a true scrap quilt, sew the units with random fabrics from each day's sewing tasks. The end result is definitely worth the effort.

Clownin' Around Quilt Pattern

Clownin' Around is made with the traditional patchwork Clown quilt block. I used vibrant colors in this example, for a circus-like theme, but included a monochromatic version with vertical sashing as an example for those of you who like to designs that are a bit more toned-down.

Learn How to String Piece

String piecing is one type of foundation piecing. Fabrics are sewn onto a backing material -- the foundation. The technique gets its name from the long strips of fabric that are used -- the strings, which are sewn randomly to a permanent foundation that's typically cut from muslin.

Make a Yo-Yo Quilt

Yo-Yos are little rosettes made by gathering circles of fabric. Yo-yos are typically sewn side by side into rows, but they also make nice little rosettes that can be used as dimensional applique and other types of embellishment.
