It is believed that the son of Mata Devaki and Vasudeva, Lord Krishna was born on this holy land around 5,000 years ago in a prison cell.

Mathura finds a mention in the Hindu epic Mahabharata and became a part of the mighty Mauryan empire sometime during the 1st century BC. Under the rule, it flourished, transforming into a primary centre for arts. Stone carving and sculpture-making fall under what is now the Mathura School of Arts, which evolved between the 1st century BC and 1st century AD. King Ashoka, the great Mauryan liege, is credited with building several Buddhist monuments in and around Mathura in the 3rd century BC. In fact, the sculptures and carvings created around this time followed a common theme of Buddhism, with a majority of the artworks inspired by and representing Lord Buddha in some form. As the rule of the Mauryans came to a grinding halt, the influence of Buddhism started to disappear, to be replaced by Hindu temples.

Places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan for a perfect weekend

Brajbhoomi, the land where Lord Krishna was born and raised, straddles the River Yamuna in Uttar Pradesh . At its centre lie the cities of Mathura and Vrindavan, where his name continues to resonate and, many say, his flute still resounds in every bylane and fallen leaf. For the pious, the devout ambience of the riverbank cities is reason enough, but Mathura and Vrindavan have a lot to offer for any traveller, with delicious food, pastoral beauty and ancient legends. Here is our quick guide for 48 hours in these twin sacred cities.

Getting there

A 60km drive from Agra airport, Mathura lies four hours by road from Delhi, and a half-hour drive from Vrindavan. Those arriving by train can disembark at Mathura Junction.

The best season to visit is in early winter, when the temperature is ideal for a soak in the river as well as a trek up the hill. This year, Janmashtami falls on 6 and 7 September. During the festivities, the streets are filled with dance and processions, and temples across Braj are lit up and decorated. You can also time your visit around Hindu festivals such as Holi, when the streets of Mathura come alive with colour and cheer. In the twin towns of Barsana and Nandgaon nearby, Holi is a week-long celebration. Women dress up as gopis (milkmaids) and playfully drive off men with sticks, in a recreation of the way Radha and the other gopis drove off Krishna and his friends when they came to Barsana to play the festival of colour.

Where to stay in Mathura and Vrindavan

While Mathura offers a range of hotels such as The Lalita Grand ( doubles from Rs4,950* ), many chose to use Vrindavan as their base. Nidhivan Sarovar Portico, Vrindavan , ( Doubles from Rs6,200* ) features an in-house spa and has a team of guides for day tours of the town. The Mayapur Vrindavan Trust (MVT) Guesthouse and Restaurant ( Doubles from Rs4,600*) is just 100m from the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON) Temple. It also has a steady WiFi connection for workations. For real quiet, head to the sandstone gazebo that sits in the middle of an elevated grass lawn. Thanks to a no-phone policy, a dense silence pervades this space, so you can retreat from the bustle of the day for a meditative evening.

Where to eat in Mathura and Vrindavan

MVT Restaurant has an expansive multicuisine menu . Delhi-based yoga instructor Niyati Karir, a frequent visitor, recommends the restaurant’s wood-fired pizza followed by blueberry cheesecake or chocolate cake with a side of cream. Govinda’s Restaurant is another popular choice. The restaurant is housed at ISKCON temples around the world, including the one in Vrindavan, and serves a buffet as well as an à la carte menu. There’s also Dasaprakash for South Indian fare and 11 FLOWERS Rooftop Café for a breezy evening meal.

Visit Krishna’s birthplace

Of the places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, the Shri Krishna Janmasthan temple complex in Mathura is a must. It is believed to have been built at the exact location where lord Krishna was born. It consists of the Keshavdeva temple, Garbha Griha shrine and Bhagavata Bhavan along with a steep tank called the Potra Kund. Observe the marble pavilions and spacious verandahs, and keep an eye out for the prison cell, built under the structure, where Krishna was born to parents Devaki and Vasudeva. When the temple complex came up, the inner sanctum was constructed right above the famed prison.

Trek up Govardhan Hill near Mathura

A six-hour circuitous trek in the town of Govardhan takes you to the top of this eponymous 80ft-tall sandstone hill. On your way, take a dip in the famed Radha Kund and Shyam Kund by temples steeped in Krishna lore. Look out for the stone cenotaphs while crossing the Kusum Sarovar lake, and for Giriraj Temple—the most popular temple here. Karir shares that the trek is just as much about the fellow travellers. “You’ll come across devotees who take the circumambulation two to three times a day, while saints travel with a cart to eat and sleep throughout the day and night.” If you are lost, the saints make for excellent guides, Karir says, as they are well educated in multiple languages as well as the scriptures of the Vedas and the Upanishads. Alternatively : Swap out the trek for the nearby town of Barsana, said to be the home of Krishna’s beloved, Radha. Just an hour from Mathura, the town is accessible via bus. Barsana is surrounded by four sacred peaks and topped by the Ladliji Temple.

Lift your head up in Dwarkadhish Temple, Mathura

Ornate murals adorn this shrine in Mathura where Lord Krishna, in his manifestation as Dwarkadhish, sits in the form of a black marble idol. Visit this temple to decipher stories of his life through the stunning ceiling paintings. Entry to the premises is allowed from two gates, which lead to the two-storey structure fronted by an open courtyard flooded with pilgrims. Every year on Janmashtami, the temple organises the popular Krishna Janmotsav. Rituals and ceremonies carry on throughout the day, beginning with the Mangal Aarti at 7am when devotees can get the first glimpse of the lord. Spend the day witnessing rajbhog—the main food offering, shringar—the dressing up of lord Krishna, and utthapan—waking up the lord with perfume and fruits, among other things.

Dive into history at Kans Qila, Mathura

Said to be the home of the demon king Kansa, the maternal uncle of Krishna, the fort Kans Qila lies in majestic ruins today. The walls reveal intricacies of Rajput and Mughal architectural styles, narrating stories of the various rulers who took over its care over centuries. The monument dates back to the time of the Mahabharata, but was restored in the 16th century by Raja Man Singh of Amber. Visit the palatial fort for a dose of history and portraits against a ’grammable backdrop.

Sweet and savoury treats abound in the streets off Mathura's Holi Gate. Start off at Oma Pehalwan Kachauri Wale, one of the oldest shops in town serving fiery kachoris and crunchy jalebis. Visit Shri Radhavallabh Lal Ji Temple, Vrindavan

Legend has it that the Shri Radha Vallabhji Maharaj idol in this temple was given as a blessing by Lord Shiva to his devotee Shri Atmadev in appreciation of his arduous devotion. Visit the temple to admire the stunning architecture and listen to local lores that surround one of the oldest temples in Vrindavan.

Perambulate across Vrindavan

There's no better way to get in touch with the heartbeat of this town. The Vrindavan Parikrama is a 13km long route snaking through the town that pilgrims cover on foot . Take off on the trail early in the morning, and you’ll be joined by the devout and the curious, welcomed by locals and blessed by priests on the way as you walk past temples and houses, bylanes and markets and the mighty Ganga. The route can be completed in about three hours, and is commonly covered barefoot.

Trail the seven Goswami temples, Vrindavan

Over the course of many years, the six main goswamis or disciples of Lord Krishna established seven sacred shrines across Vrindavan. “Each consecrated deities of the lord and gave them the names they lovingly addressed him with,” says Karir. Visit the thus- named Radha Damodar Temple, Radha Gokulananda Temple, Radha Gopinath Temple, Radha Shyamsundar Temple, Radha Raman Temple, Radha Govindadeva Temple and Radha Madanmohan Temple for rich oral narratives and Vrindavan’s earliest temple architecture. No two temples seem the same. The smoke and honking of the road give way to the smell of chandan and the vibrations of kirtan in some of these shrines, while at others you can only hear the shuffling of the faithful kneeling before the lord.With a rickshaw steering you through the busy streets, the trail takes up to three hours with enough time to stop for a cup of tea by the River Yamuna.

Marvel at the grandeur of Sri Sri Krishna Balaram Mandir, Vrindavan

On the way back, visit the grand ISKCON Temple built in 1975 by Srila Prabhupada, founder of the ISKCON movement. The marble archway resounds with chants of Krishna, and ushers you in the main temple built around a tamal tree. Under its cool green shade, women thread necklaces of dry fruit to offer the deity. Attractions abound the premises, with book stalls, a museum , eateries and a guesthouse where you can learn, eat and stay. If you’re on time, you can catch the Raj Bhog aarti at 12pm right before the temple closes for the afternoon. Be careful to find a spot beforehand, for as the bells begin ringing, devotees are spread across the courtyard—some lost in a dance of devotion, some singing joyfully. With a mic in hand, one by one they take over to devote their song to the lord as the afternoon meal is served to the idols before being shared with the devotees as prasadam.

Hold your breath at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple, Vrindavan

A trip to Brajbhoomi is incomplete without a visit to one of its most visited temples. Steer through the crowds to catch a glimpse of the lord’s idol at Shri Bankey Bihari Temple in Vrindavan. It is believed that the sight of the idol of Shri Krishna in his childhood form is a harbinger of good luck, which is why even the streets of Keshi Ghat, right in front of the temple , remain flooded with pilgrims even before the temple opens. Bhuteshwar Mahadev

This one is the oldest temple in the city where Lord Shiva in the form of Shiva Lingam is worshipped. It is believed that Bhuteshwar Mahadev has protected Brajwasis from demons and this pious Temple was built to keep the evil forces away from Mathura. Moreover, there is a saying that this temple was established on the day this city was discovered by Shatrugan (younger brother of Shri Ram).

And this belief is continued every time in the Vrindavan. It was first constructed in the 16th century under the reign of Mughal emperor Akbar. Though the principal deity of this temple is goddess Radha but the idol here is of Radhe Krishna, the inseparable. 

There is a saying that the one with devotion and purity in heart can get divine Darshan here.

Shri Banke Bihari Temple

Continue to the next nearby one and the most famous temple, Banke Bihari temple. Barefoot through the narrow lanes of Vrindavan to this temple is a heavenly feeling. Everybody around leaned in devotion and the enchanting all over you is a pure magic one can witness. Banke Bihari has a unified form of Radha Krishna. Devotees here will be large in number, actually uncountable. This temple is always full of hustle and rushes to reach the idols for Darshan. 

This is the most crowded place in the whole of Vrindavan and the most happening one too. The vibe there feels like a string pulling you closer to the temple every second. 

Pro Tip – Do not wear glasses, scarves loose, or beanie-like stuff as this place is full of monkeys snatching it all from you and you will have to get It back torn or destroyed only. Don’t hang easy-to-snatch purses as well. Keep Parshad safe too.

Last for day one is the ultimate dive into spirituality, serenity and where your soul will feel like dancing. Reach there by 7.30 to witness the enchanting soul enrichment experience. The music, the Bhajans and the devotees dancing in joy are all magic in the air there. Iskcon is there in most of the cities but Vrindavan, the home of the love of Radha Krishna, has a breathtaking view. Visit the temple to vibe along with the devotees, then take a tour of the museum within the temple itself. Later there is a segment devoted to the founder of Iskcon, A.C. Bhaktivedanta Swami. Go to bed early as the next day starts early! 

Embark your Day 2 with Aarti at Iskcon only. Timing – 4.30 am, reach early for more time in there and leave from there as soon as it gets over to witness the doors opening of Nidhivan. This is a wholesome experience here in Nidhivan witnessing the changes that occurred while the temple was closed. As soon as the doors to the temple open, the priest there shows you the eaten food and other stuff evidencing the night Maha Raas happened while the van was closed. It is believed that all the trees are the Gopies , Krishna performs Maha Raas with them. Radha is worshipped there and the common enchanting you will hear there is “ Radhe Radhe Shyam Milade!”

Enjoy the early morning chilled environment of the Ghat on the sacred Yamuna with devotees bathing in there. Light the diyas in the river, talk to locals and live the vibe of Vrindavan.

This Ghat is where Lord Krishna killed dangerous Keshi sent by Kansa. Visit 12 other ghats while boating there. 

Pro Tip – Visit the Ghat early morning and then a few temples and come back to the ghat for boating. While boating ask your rider to take you in the Yamuna where you can get down from the boat and enjoy walking in the freezing water. In the months like December and January, you will find Seagulls too which is the most enchanting scene to witness over Yamuna. 

Govind dev Ji

Next after visiting Keshi Ghat is Govind Dev Ji. This temple was constructed in 1590 by King Man Singh of Amer. In 1670, during the reign of Aurangzeb, it was plundered. Later, in the first half of the 18th century, Raja Sawai Jai Singh established the idol of Govind Dev Ji in Jaipur. 

The architecture of this temple is different from other Hindu temples, it is more like a Haveli style witnessing the mix of Hindu and Arabic architectural styles. Also, unlike most of the Hindu Temples, it doesn’t have scenes depicted on the walls of the temple. 

Rangji Temple

Rangji temple, next in places to visit in Mathura and Vrindavan, is a replica of the southern temple in South India. It has three Attractions other than the temple itself, known as, Vahan Mahal, Sheesh Mahal and Leela Mahal presenting the ancient stuff. 

The biggest temple and the calmest one in the Vrindavan is this temple. It has got the Marathi essence, Southern essence and the Uttar Pradesh essence altogether. This was a temple made by someone anonymously and donated to Swami Rangacharya after whose name it is still known. Shri Rangnath temple is the true witness of devotion and selfless bhakti setting an example.

Gopeshwar Mahadev

Followed by Rangji, visit the divine temple of Lord Shiva. The vibe near this temple is incomparable. Step into the temple with a beautiful flower basket available outside and take the blessing of Shiva while pouring water And flowers over the Shiva Lingam. 

Talk to Nandi after the divine experience of Shivling offerings. Whisper your wishes in the ears of Nandi. 

It is believed that one night Sharad Purnima, Radha Rani and Gopis got along with Lord Shiva and he expressed his wish to be a part of Raas Leela. Being a male he was not permitted by Vrinda Devi. In this wish, Shiva started worshipping Radha Rani and finally got permission. Finally, he has to emerge as a gopi to be a participant in the Raas Leela. Moreover, Krishna being a devotee of Lord Krishna recognized him and named him Gopeshwar.

Popularly Known as Bansi Vat Maha Raas Temple, this is next on the list of must-visit places in Mathura and Vrindavan. Small and the calmest place there in Vrindavan announcing the love and devotion towards the Maha Raas of Lord Krishna. There is that tree under which he used to play his flute and the magical sound used to attract people there. With depictions all over that place, it feels like happening there at that moment itself. It also has a Charan Mandir , founded in 1820 by Acharya Shri Girdhari Sharan Dev. The other Mandir was built By King Oyal with Radha Krishna idols there. 

Radha Raman ji

After spending a handful of half an hour in Banshi Vat, reach Radha Raman temple by 10.10 am to witness the opening of the curtains and the grand Aarti initiation. The vibe there is amazing, serenity all around in a crowded yet tranquil environment.

Shri Radha Madan Mohan Ji

Next in this line is the Madan Mohan Ji temple, which is quite far from all the above-mentioned temples. After these temples and a boat ride at Kashi, one can visit this temple. It is believed to have been constructed by the great-grandson of Lord Krishna, 5000 years back. Later, Advaita Acharya founded it at the base of an old Banyan tree and entrusted the worship of Madana Mohan to his disciple, Purusottama Chaube. 

During the Mughal invasion, the idol from this temple was taken to Jaipur by King Jai Singh and later shifted to Karauli by King Gopal Singh. It is said to be the exact resemblance of Krishna from the waist down. It is traditional Hindu, Nagara-style architecture. Also, the last one is for Vrindavan.

Govardhan Parikrama

After done with all the Vrindavan by 1 pm, the next activity is Govardhan Parikrama. It is divided into two segments: Badi Parikrama has three spots and second is Choti Parikrama has four spots on the way. In total, it is 23 km, with two options again, either to do it by walking or use a rickshaw which will be easily available nearby. It takes almost 7-8 hours barefoot and 3 hours if you take the latter option. 

This is the Parikrama of Govardhan Hill. As per mythology, Lord Krishna lifted this hill with his little finger to save the people of the region from the wrath of Inder Dev, the God of Rain.

The next day starts with visiting the old lanes of Gokul. Start with Chaurasi Khamba Temple where Bal Krishna’s sequels are resonated. It has 84 pillars where the brothers, Krishna and Balaram spent their childhood. 

Next in line is the Holy sand of Raman Reti, located around 2-3 km from Gokul. It is the San where Krishna spent his childhood playing in there. In Dwapar Yuga, he used to go there to graze the cows. Also, there is a park next to it pulling you closer to the natural beauty and an inhabitant of deer and ducks. In this place Holi is played with the sand, not the colours. 

Finally, visit the Brahmand Ghat. The story   behind this is once Krishna ate the soil and when Yashoda came to know about it he forced him to open his mouth to let the soil out and witnessed the whole universe in there, aka Brahmand in Hindi. Hence, there is this Ghat with a temple dedicated to Lord Krishna.

We visited Mathura Vrindavan in January 2021. The COVID effect had somewhat slowed down, and it was a perfect time.

We were already done exploring Agra and around ; Mathura was next in the lineup. Mathura is roughly a 2-hour bus ride away from Agra and easily accessible. 

Further, Vrindavan is a suburb of Mathura district and is approximately half an hour away from the city center. You can either stay in Mathura or Vrindavan. Nonetheless, all points of interest around Mathura are well connected.

10 Places To Visit in Mathura Vrindavan

We barely had four days to explore Mathura. And like I said, it was inevitable that we wouldn’t be able to cover everything.

Here are the places we covered. We are listing the places we visited in Mathura first.

1. Vishram Ghat

Legends have it that this is the place where Lord Krishna rested after killing Kansa. It makes sense because Kansa Kila is nearby.

It was the first place we visited after passing through the meshy streets of Mathura. The calming and soothing Yamuna river flows by the Ghat. There are temple bell chimes, hopping monkeys, sages, and devotees arriving to perform their religious duties.

You can take a boat ride and immerse yourself in the holy waters of Yamuna. If you want to soak in the peace, we recommend visiting Vishram Ghat early in the morning.

2. Dwarkadheesh Temple

Situated next to Vishram Ghat, Dwarkadheesh Temple is one of the oldest and highly revered temples in Mathura. The Rajasthani-style entrance gate, paintings depicting Krishna’s life, and the temple’s astonishing architecture are enough for you to get lost in the devotion of Krishna.

The temple’s location is in the narrow lanes of Mathura, and it is perhaps the best idea to walk. Do attend morning or evening Aarti!

3. Bhuteshwar Mahadev Temple

Lord Shiva’s form, Bhuteshwar Mahadev, is also referred to as Kotwal, aka Chief Police Office/Protector of Mathura, and this temple is devoted to Him. It is believed that without getting permission from Bhuteshwar Mahadev, one can’t do any deeds inside the city.

There’s also a Shaktipeeth in the temple complex where a lock of hair of Goddess Sati fell.

The temple is approximately 1.5 km from Mathura Junction railway station and about 500 meters from the bus station. One should visit Bhuteshwar Mahadev as it’s one of the temples not devoted to Lord Krishna.

4. Shri Krishna Janm Bhoomi

This temple complex is the most revered, built around the prison where Lord Krishna was born to Devaki and Vasudeva. Devotees visits from all over the world and the number only increases during special occasions.

After getting blessings from Bhuteshwar Mahadev, we walked for another thirty minutes to reach Krishna Janm Sthan/Bhoomi temple.

According to scholars, the original temple was destroyed and looted by Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb. A mosque was built on the plinth, which still stands. The temple architecture you see today is new, completed in 1982. 

Inside, you’ll find life stories of Krishna, temples, and shows depicting the influence of the Lord. It’s a good time to stop, sit for a while, and be lost in the reveredness!

5. Birla Temple

Also known as Gita Mandir, the Birla temple sits on Mathura-Vrindavan road. The temple is devoted to the Lakshmi Narayan avatar of Lord Vishnu.

Jugal Kishore Birla of the Birla Family built this temple in the memory of his parents. The temple architecture is modern and is made of red sandstone. The inscriptions on the pillars read the whole Bhagavad Gita.

There’s a funny story attached to visiting this temple. We were all tired after returning from the Janm Sthan temple, but we had to visit the Birla temple as per our plan.

The rush and dirt from walking the raw streets of Mathura had taken away our energy. There was no direct bus, and the tuk-tuk was charging way too high (we had a super low budget, to be honest).

We were almost ready to give up, and suddenly a Tempo arrived. The guy was shouting and calling for the places. And as we told Birla Temple, he nodded, and our whole world turned slow. We fitted our backs into the backs of that Tempo and finally achieved what we’d set to do. And took this weird selfie as well:

6. Banke Bihari Temple

Okay, so up until now, we were technically in Mathura. Now let’s explore some temples of Vrindavan.

The next day, we visited the Banke Bihari Temple. Another highly revered Hindu temple is dedicated to Krishna. It was built in 1864 by Swami Haridas , the guru of famous singer Tansen.

The temple resides in a narrow location, and you’ll pass through the local streets of Vrindavan to reach here. There are loudspeakers hooked on poles instructing guidelines to follow while visiting the temple. Every street bustles with different items, each giving the expression of Krishna somehow.

7. Radha Vallabh Temple

Situated near Banke Bihari temple, Radha Vallabh temple is dedicated to Radha, a Hindu goddess and consort of Krishna. There’s no deity of Radhaji inside the temple, but a crown is put beside the Lord Radha Vallabh (Krishna), portraying Radha. It was built by the Radha-Vallabh Sect, which emphasizes the worship of Radharani.

The temple is peaceful in inexplicable ways and is a must-visit. It is also situated between the narrow lanes of Vrindavan.

8. ISKCON Temple

Also known as Sri Krishna Balarama Mandir, this temple was built in 1975 by the International Society for Krishna Consciousness (ISKCON). The beige-colored temple with white marble is architecturally magnificent. It is one of the most peaceful temples, where you can easily spot foreigners and Indians humming the hymns praising Lord Krishna.

It is situated a 10-minute ride away from the Banke Bihari temple. It sits near the Yamuna river’s banks, where Krishna and Balarama used to herd their cows.

9. Prem Mandir

Situated at 5-minutes away from ISKCON Temple, Prem Mandir is a relatively modern-architectured temple that opened in February 2012. The presiding deities are Radha-Krishna on the ground floor and Sita-Ram on the first floor.

The temple architecture is massive, and we liked the life-size sculptures showing different Ras Leelas of Krishna all around the temple’s garden. You should visit it at night to see these tableaus in more vivid colors.

If you call yourself photogenic, be sure to get some good clicks with this beautiful temple after taking the blessings.

10. The Mystical Nidhivan

We were waiting for this place to come. It had influenced us so much with its mystical stories that we couldn’t afford to miss this place, called Nidhivan. It’s not a typical van or forest at present but a group of trees believed to be nothing but forms of Gopis. 

It is believed that Krishna performs Ras Leelas with Radha, and these trees turn into Gopis (humans) in the night, even today. Nobody can see them, and the one who tries to do so either goes blind, or something happens, due to which that person can’t express what they saw. Therefore, the complex is emptied by dusk, and no one can stay inside after that.

Nidhivan is situated in another set of Mathura’s narrow lanes. There’s a temple inside the Nidhivan called Rang Mahal.

Visiting Gokul Govardhan

Gokul is the village where Lord Krishna spent his childhood with his elder brother Dau Ji while Govardhan is the village where He lifted the Govardhan Hill to protect its people from wrathful rain.

1. Dip in Holy Waters of Yamuna

What better way to indulge in the divinity of Mathura Vrindavan than taking dips into the holy river?

You can do so at Vishram Ghat or any ghat within the city’s sphere, for that matter.

2. Circumambulate the Holy Govardhan Parvat

Want to give yourself exercise? How about trekking 21 km? If that sounds exciting to you, go on a full circumambulation around Govardhan Parvat, situated in the outskirts of Mathura Vrindavan.

3. See The Kans Qila

Kans was the mischievous uncle of Lord Krishna, who tried to kill him many times but failed at every attempt. His Qila or fort is still in existence but in dire condition. 

You wouldn’t find it in plain sight as it’s practically hidden in the haste of city buildings on one side and a water body on the other. So, ask locals to locate its exact position (because Google Maps is no help here). Note that it’s somewhere near the Vishram Ghat. Also, beware of monkeys here.

Team Misfit spent around three days scouring the Mathura city, mostly on foot. On these days, we had used public toilets and restrooms, which are available in most parts of the city and around the attractions.

In terms of cleanliness, we felt the city had more to do. For example, Yamuna seems polluted, and lots of plastic bags are lying in even the main parts of the city. There should be a dustbin at frequent intervals. 

However, we are optimistic that authorities are actively working on the issue, and a few years later, people will have the consciousness.

Mode of Transport Between Attractions

Traveling between attractions and temples is easy. You can easily cover most Mathura, Vrindavan, Govardhan, and Gokul temples on foot. However, you’ll need public transport to travel between Vrindavan, Govardhan, and Gokul.

Tuk-tuk and shared auto are readily available for Vrindavan and Gokul from Mathura. Since Govardhan is around 50 km, you can get a bus from the highway or the bus stand. City buses also travel through these places at a regular interval.

How To Reach Mathura?

Mathura Junction railway station (MTJ) lies in the city, only a few kilometers away from the city center. You can find trains to MTJ from major railway stations in India.

Mathura has depot and bus stations connected to nearby state’s major bus stations. You can find the list of stations operated by UPSRTC in Mathura , which falls in the Agra region.

The nearest international airport is Delhi at ~145 km, and the nearest domestic airport is Agra at ~50 km. Private and public transport is available from Agra and Delhi to Mathura.

Best Time to Visit Mathura and Around

Holi is undoubtedly the best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan. Mathura celebrates the festival of colors, Holi, in unique and different styles. According to the Indian calendar, Holi typically falls in March every year. Search Google for the exact date, and plan your trip accordingly.

The next best time to visit Mathura Vrindavan and Gokul Govardhan is Janmashtmi — formally the birthday of Lord Krishna. Since the entire region bores hymns of Krishna, you can imagine the city’s vibrancy during this time. Tableaus, decorations, religious sermons, blooming markets, and more.

Please note these are the peak times as most tourists and travelers come to Mathura’s sacredness to celebrate Holi and Janmashtmi.

Itinerary Mathura - Vrindavan Trip (3 Days)

Exploring towns with such deep roots in our Indian Hindu mythology has always been fascinating. According to legend, the holy Lord Krishna was born in Mathura and raised in Vrindavan by his other parents, which is why both places have their own unique offerings in terms of Shree Krishna Leela Gatha.

Mathura is known as the centre of Brij Boomi (Krishna's territory), whereas Vrindavan is known as Krishna's playground, which regained its fame when Chaitanya Mahaprabhu rediscovered in his search for divine love traces all of Krishna's transcendent pastimes.

If you ever get the chance to visit here, Bhakts says there are many things to see and do. Various worthwhile locations allowed you to observe both heritage and cultural features, with the essence of Radhe Radhe singing throughout.

During my visit to Brij Dham, I had the opportunity to actually feel the stories that I had been hearing since I was a child and to be a witness to those surreal places, as well as learn about notable places around Shri Krishan Leela or birth with other associates of his life,

We got up at 6 a.m. because we knew it would take us 3 to 3:30 hours (depending on traffic) to be at Shree Krishan Janmasthan, where we would begin our journey.

We've placed our car in a parking spot near Potra Kund and are ready to start spending.

Tip: Because phones and other electronic devices are not permitted inside, keep them in your car or in a locker provided by local shops.

It is one of India's most well-known Kunds, and because of its connection to Lord Krishna, it has a particular place in the hearts of his devotees. This Potra kund is actually a stepwell, known in India as Boali. The connection between this Kund and Lord Krishna is that Mata Devki and Vasudeva used to wash their children's clothes in this stepwell, and clothes back then were referred to as Potra.

Shri Krishna Janmasthan Temple, Mathura:

This is the site where Lord Krishna is said to have been born. This location includes caves and khakis portraying god life, as well as big temples for pooja and worshipping. Surrounded by a market and chanting that seemed to convey the story of Shree Krishan's birth times through each stone and carving.

In today's period, the quilt (shape) appears shabby as a result of inadequate upkeep, and it's difficult to understand how rulers ruined its beauty and architecture over time.

Shahi Jama Masjid:

We get an opportunity to look over Shahi Jama Masjid, which is adjacent to the market. When we asked locals about the area, they said: "it was built in 1661 by Abd-un-Nabi Khan." This structure's grandeur spellbinds one with its four minarets and mosaic plastering, as well as the magnificent sculptures." The front of the mosque is etched with 99 names of Allah in Persian script, according to residents.

Shahi Jama Masjid

We sat there for a time, enjoying the peace and quiet while learning about the significance of the location. It is always beneficial to be aware that there will be two components of different religions that operate together.

Birla Temple/Gita Mandir:

On the Vrindavan-Mathura route, on the outskirts of Mathura. It is a popular destination for tourists and pilgrims. The main draw of this temple is that it contains all 18 chapters of the Bhagavad Gita written on its pillars. - remarked Pandit ji

The temple also holds Lord Krishna's chariot and the Bhagavad Gita Stambh, which contains all of the Bhagavad Gita's carvings.

Shri Bankey Bihari Temple.

It is the most well-known and well-visited Mathura temple devoted to Lord Krishna. It is said that if a devotee gazes long enough into the Lord's eyes out of devotion, Krishna's heart melts and he joins the devotee, leaving his throne behind. Because of this, it is believed that every two minutes, a purdah (curtain) is drawn in front of the idol between the worshippers to break the intensity of feeling that Krishna's image stirs in his devotees.

After that , We chose to have lunch nearby after spending some time visiting the gorgeous market and spending some time around the temple, which is full of sweets (pede) in particular, as well as other fascinating things to carry with you.

We had our lunch in the hotel while having some rest we have a plan to visit the next place which is Nidhivan Vidhivan . which would be the last place to explore since we need to walk around the place. And ended up with this for day one

Nidhivan Vrindavan :

It is said that Lord Krishna performs his Ras Leela every single night here, and that anyone who dares to look over the site in the evening or even attempts to do so has lost their sight, voice, or worse, mental soundness. With a walk-around gated lane, you can get a close look at Nidhivan's trees, It is a must-see destination that attracts visitors from all over the world.

One interesting discovery was that the Tulsi plants located in the premises are in pairs, according to pandit ji.

Nidhivan Vrindavan

On the second day, we planned to go to Govardhan parikrama. It is said that Goverdhan hill, also known as Giriraj hill, is one of the most auspicious mountains in the world, and that all gopas and gopis circumnutated it to please Lord Krishan.

It's a 23 kilometer parikrama that took us 6 hours to finish due to the numerous sights we saw along the way, including

Govardhan Parikarma:

Along the parikrama, you might be surprised to see some devotees performing Dandavata Parikara (where they cover the entire parikrama by drawing marks on the ground while lying flat). I had the opportunity to ask them how long it would take them to get to the end, and he responded three weeks. He went on to say that this ritual is frequently conducted with milk, which is considered more sacred.

Sankarshan Kund:

The cow was drinking water from a pond when she was suddenly attacked by a tiger, according to legend. She did everything she could to keep the tiger away, but the animal was stubborn. Finally, she negotiated a deal with the tiger that she would return to be eaten after nursing her calf and bidding her master farewell, and the tiger agreed to let her go. She returned home and instructed her calf to drink milk till he was satisfied. His master Brahmin was touched by this and chose to offer himself as a sacrifice instead. All three of them eventually made their way back to the pond. it was at this moment that Lord Krishna himself appeared in front of them seeing Lord Krishna's tiger had a change of heart in this way all three of them were saved by the grace of Lord Krishna.

Punchari Ka Lautha Baba Temple:

It is located in Rajasthan, and the legend surrounding this sacred site is as follows: Shri Krishna's friend Lota baba was once playing hide and seek, and it was Krishna's time to find his pal. Lota baba took shelter in the puchari. Krishna set out to find his companion, but he was interrupted by his cowherd buddies who invited him to play with them. Krishna became so engrossed in his game with his cowherd friends that he forgot Lota baba was waiting for him. Lota baba dedicated himself to the Lord in a state of separation and waited for him for the rest of his life.

Uddhav Kund, Govardhan

You’ll find mention of this Kund in the epics, as this is the place where Uddhav Ji sympathized with Dvaraka’s residents. This kund is situated to the west of Kusum Sarovar Govardhan on the east end of Parikrama Marg.

Shyam Kund & Radha Kund:

According to the ancient epics, Lord Krishna's maternal uncle Kans commanded the demon to kill him. However, that demon took the appearance of a bull, and Lord Krishna easily defeated it; however, the cow family is respected in India, so Radha and the villagers claimed that Lord Krishna had committed a crime. As a result, in order to overcome the sin, he bathed in the holy water. Following this, Radha dug a route with her Kangan (bracelet) to allow the holy water to flow to her Kund, which is now known as Radha Kund and is considered the holiest of all holy locations. Lord Krishna's devotees believe that these Kunds have healing powers.

Day 2 was lots of excitement and walking yet, despite backpacking 21+ kilometres, we didn't feel exhausted, perhaps due to the enthusiasm of pilgrims around us who kept chanting the names of Radhe Radhe throughout our journey.

Pro Tip: Don't forget to feed monkeys during your parikrama; it is believed that if you continue to help those who meet you on your parikrama, you will gain more benefits from your yatra. It's the kind of devotion you're fostering in others.

We began really early in the morning. We had planned to visit a couple well-known temples that had daytime closure times. Our guide informed us that during the day, all significant temples close between 12 and 3 p.m. So it's best to explore them first, and then we'll return to our original location.

Sri Krishna Balram Temple (ISKCON Vrindavan):

Built-in 1975, the Sri Krishna Balram Temple is located on the banks of the Yamuna River, where Balarama used to herd their cow. The Aarti and Bhagavad Geeta lessons given here every day enchant visitors to the heavenly shrine. Located in Vrindavan's Raman Reti neighborhood. It is a prominent tourist attraction for visitors to Mathura.

Sri Krishna Balram Temple (ISKCON Vrindavan)

Shri Pagal Baba Temple:

It is the first of its type, a white marbled temple. Pagal Baba, whose real name is Sri Sheela Nand Ji Maharaj, created the temple, which is a seven-story building with each storey dedicated to a distinct avatar of Lord Krishna.

Prem Mandir:

It is one of Vrindavan's newest and most amazing temples, according to our guide, a resurrection of traditional Indian art and Nagara architecture emphasising Rajasthani and Gujrati style with finely carved doors with floral designs.

No one wants to return to those areas after seeing them all, yet everyone's life requires a balance of commitment and responsibility. Overall, I can say that traveling here and seeing the decor then and pilgrims will make you fall in love with the enchantments and surroundings. But, like with every good story, there must be a happy ending.

Vrindavan Mathura – Ultimate Travel Guide

Vrindavan is also known as the Land of Krishna, a culture rich place. It lies in the vicinity of three northern regions – Delhi, Agra and Jaipur . The land of Brij bhoomi popularly called Brij region is close to the Seven Wonders of the World – Taj Mahal . The region is located at Rivers Ganges and Yamuna and the Upper Indus Region.

History of Vrindavan

One of the main reasons that this place is significant to Hindus is mainly because Lord Krishna spent his childhood and adolescence here. He said Vrindavan is a Culture of Hills & Forests more than a City. There are around 137 sacred forests around the 1000 sacred Kunds spread over the banks of the River Yamuna & Holy Hills. Braj is famous for temples in Vrindavan which means “forest of tulsi”.

Culture & Tradition of Vrindavan

People here speak an accent softer than Hindi. The local language to communicate with each other is called Brij Bhasha. The culture spreads through the entire country.

Famous Festivals Celebrated in Vrindavan

The color of the region is best during the festival times. This includes the festival of colors – Holi. This place turns colorful, joyfully noisy, and you can witness the magic of colors come alive in the Vrindavan grounds. People gather to color each other and celebrate.

During Ras –Leela celebrated during Feb- March in the calendar year, youngsters dance to songs and music in colorful attire and lots of energy. Lord Krishna used to perform this Ras – Leela Dance at Gokul and Vrindavan.

Cuisine of Vrindavan

The place is popular for spicy Chaat and delicious sweets too especially Milk cake from Bajna. Kasganj’s Soan Papri, Raya’s Soan Halwa, Iglas’s Chamchams, Agra ka Petha, and Pede from Madhura, Boora & Batasa of Hathras and Nauhjheel’s Maal Puye to name the famous one.

Top Things to see around Vrindavan :

The best way to get around especially Vrindavan is by walk. It would surely take more than a couple of days to get around the temples here. Several pilgrims and spiritual people from all over the country throng the place. There are several temples to visit here to see the land of Krishna here in Braj. One of the top sightseeing spots in Vrindavan is the oldest temples around Vrindavan.

There are a total of seven Prachin Temple but pilgrims generally visit all or most of the temples here. Madan Mohanji, Radha Damodaran Temple, Radha Shyamsunder, Baanke Bihari, Gokulananda, Gopinath, and Govindadeva are the most famous ones.

1. Madan Mohanji

The Prachin Mandir translates into Ancient Temples. The history of this temple Madan Mohanji dates back to the 1500s. As you go higher up the temple climbing up the stairs you will feel the quiet and peace and worth your entire trip.

2. Radha Damodar Temple

Here, there are numerous statues depicting the Lord Krishna. There are Samadhi of mostly of those who walked thirty five kilometers everyday which was known as Govardhan Parikrama. One special sightseeing spot to look for is a small rock that contains the footprints of Krishna along with the hoof print of a cow. It is believed that Krishna was so pleased with the strong devotion of Jiva Goswami that he gave a ‘darshan’ here. The Jiva Goswami Samadhi is also here.

3. Mirabai Temple

Close by to the famous Jiva Goswami Samadhi is the little Mirabai Temple. It is believed that Mirabai scolded Jiva Goswami as he refused Mirabai putting forth the reason of celibacy. Do not imagine a vast or enormous temple like the rest of them. A small temple standing by itself in humble architecture attracts a lot of tourists.

4. Govinda dev Temple

It is said that here Mirabai found ‘her Krishna’ when she arrived at Vrindavan.  It is believed this building could once be spotted from Jaipur when it was originally seven stories high. Built by Raja Man Singh by 1590 it is a brick colored three storied ancient temple with decent architecture.

5. Sri Gopinath Temple

Close to the Govindadeva Temple is this temple believed with marvelous architecture and deity carved 5000 years ago. Founded by Madhu Pundit Goswami, the three deities was carved by Sri Krishna’s grandson, Vajranabha and rediscovered by Paramananda Goswami at Vamsi –Vata. The deities were carved by description of Uttara, Parikshit’s mother. The Samadhi of Sri Madhu Pundit, who took over the seva, is there behind the temple structure.

6. Sri Radha Shyamsundar

One of the most significant temples for every devotee is the Sri Vrindavana Dhama is the Sri Radha Shyamsundar. There is a special place in the heart of Vaishnavas especially because they can find the distinct Deity of Sri Shyamsundar evinced from the heart of Srimati Radharani. It is believed she also graced Shyamananda Prabhu with nupur tilak which was in the shape of Her Lotus Feet.

7. Baanke Bihari Temple

Another famous Krishna temple in Vrindavan is the Bankey Bihari Temple where it is believed that Shri Bankey Bihari made an appearance in Nidhivan. The Goswamis or saints helped in the building of the temple started in 1863/ 64. The words Bankey translates to ‘Bent in three places’ while Bihari means ‘supreme enjoyer’. Visitors find a unique way of worship as neither bell ring nor conch shells sound. People chant ‘Radha Naam’ while bhog and Prasad are offered during festival times here.

8. Gokulananda Temple

The Sri Radha Gokulananda Temple at Vrindavan is situated in the middle of Kesi Ghat and Radha Raman Temple on the banks of River Yamuna. Earlier deities were each worshipped in their own temples. However the builder of this ancient shrine envisioned all deities to be worshipped under one roof. Apart from Sri Radha Gokulananda, the deities here are Vijaya Govinda, Chaitanya Mahaprabhu, and Radha Vinoda. Hence he built the Sri Gokulananda Temple.

Other Famous Temples & Ghats :

There are various other temples such as ISKCON Temple and the Rangji.

Rangji Temple

This temple land was founded in 1851. There are tiny little temples which are connected in the massive compound. This is interesting place to visit as you can see the Sone ki Palki. You can view the eight vehicles, chariots, horses and elephants in gold and silver like covering material.

ISKCON Temple

This temple is completely white in color. You cannot miss it not only because of its color but also because it is the very first temple as a pilgrim/ visitor enters Vrindavan. You can spot several international devotees here.

This picturesque site provides the best place for a peaceful time with only sounds of the flowing waters to break the silence. You may spot a pundit chanting in the Holy hills or a turtle coming out to breathe the cold winter breeze. Once you cross the pontoon bridge over the river that starts at Suraj Ghat, passing through Chir Ghat, to the Kesi Ghat you get to see another Vrindavan view.

Best Places to Eat :

Being a pilgrimage site, there is mostly vegetarian food available here.  They serve Satvik Bhojan where as foods containing onion, garlic, non-veg are not served here and referred to as Tamsik Bhojan.  Famous snacks here include channa bhattura, pakoras, aloo –puri and kachori.

Getting Around Vrindavan in Local Transport

There are busses connecting cities running from NH 28 & NH 29. Several travel by own conveyance like bicycle, cars, and other auto rickshaws, etc.

Important Tips:

Be careful while travelling as roads are not maintained well. There is disorganized parking and traffic management. The autos sometime charge very high or uneven charges. No separate footpath for those travelling by foot.

A Perfect 2 Day Itinerary For Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour

In India, visiting Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan are on every traveler’s list. Agra is known for the Taj Mahal which is one of the seven wonders of the world . Mathura and Vrindavan are very important religious places dedicated to Lord Krishna. These sites allow you to witness both the heritage and cultural aspects in India.

This Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan itinerary would be a great idea for weekend travelers or the ones who want to explore these places on a 2 day schedule. So, let’s get started.

Getting From Delhi To Agra

Day 1 : taj mahal, agra fort and fatehpur sikri, day 2 : mathura and vrindavan.

If you are coming to India from overseas, it is most probable that you will be landing at the Delhi Airport. If this is not the case you may still consider the train as the fastest mode of transportation from your city to Agra . Below are the different ways of traveling from Delhi to Agra, you can follow any of these as per your convenience :

By Train : You can reach the New Delhi Railway Station (NDLS) using the rapid metro service from Delhi Airport . The easiest way to book a train from Delhi To Agra is through Clear Trip website . Just fill in the easy form including the city you are coming from, the destination, day you would be traveling, preferred seat and the number of passengers. It would then show you all the available train routes, timings and their respective fares. You may book the train journey that suits you the best.

By Bus : You can book a bus trip from Delhi to Agra using the Make My Trip website. It also includes an easy search form that would show you details on all the available bus routes. Look out for the Volvo buses as they are the most comfortable ones.

By Car : You can hire a car here or ask the hotel management you are staying at to arrange a car for you. This is an expensive mode of transportation, but it’s the most convenient one.

2 Day Itinerary For Agra Mathura Vrindavan Tour

The taj mahal.

Start your day by visiting the Taj Mahal. Its beauty is beyond words. Visiting this beautiful mausoleum is a once in a lifetime experience so make sure to take your time, click pictures and enjoy the charm of this wonder.

There are many photographers available there too who can help you to capture those picture perfect moments.

Tour Duration : 2 Hours

Ticket Prices :

• For foreign nationals the ticket is priced at 1100 rupees (15 USD) which includes a bottle of water, shoe covers & a tourist map of Agra.
• For Indian nationals the ticket is priced at 50 rupees. You will need to purchase shoe covers separately.

Note :  During your visit you will be allowed to carry your camera & mobile phone with you. Edibles, torch & sharp objects are not allowed inside.

Opening Hours : Taj Mahal opens 6 days a week except on Fridays. The opening hours are as below;

• Day Time : 6 AM to 6 :30 PM
• Night Time : 8:30 PM to 12:30 AM

The Agra Fort is another must visit attraction in Agra. It’s an incredible example of Mughal architecture when the forts were built of red sandstone and marble. This fort was built in the year 1573. Its huge complex consist of many palaces, gardens, lawns, courtyards, corridors, mosques, audience halls and chambers. Take a guided walking tour of this monument to know more about its fascinating history and architecture.

Tour Duration : 2 hours

Ticket Prices : For foreign nationals the ticket for Agra Fort is priced at 550 rupees (8 USD) while for Indian nationals the ticket is priced at 40 rupees.

Opening Hours : Agra fort remains open 6 AM to 6 PM everyday.

Note : The next stop would be Fatehpur Sikri which is located at a distance of 40 kms from Agra. Make sure you take a halt at any nearby restaurant in Agra for lunch before heading to Fatehpur Sikri. There are very limited food options in Fatehpur Sikri.

Fatehpur Sikri

Post lunch, visit the Fatehpur Sikri which is a palace city and has been listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site . Built of red sandstone this palace city comprises of many popular structures such as the tomb of sufi saint Salim Chishti, Jama Masjid, Diwan-i-Aam (Hall of public audience), Birbal’s home, Hiran Minar (Elephant tower) and Paanch Mahal(five-storied pyramidal palace).

The most noteworthy thing about Fatehpur Sikri is its distinctive layout and the majestic entrance gate known as the Bulandh Darwaza .

Tour Duration : 2 Hours (Including the 45 minutes journey from Agra to Fatehpur Sikri)

Ticket Prices : For foreign nationals the ticket for Fatehpur Sikri is priced at 260 rupees (4 USD) while for Indian nationals the ticket is priced at 20 rupees.

Opening Hours : Fatehpur Sikri remains open from 6 AM to 6:30 PM everyday except on Fridays.

By the end of this tour, head back to Agra and have a good dinner at your hotel or at any of these top recommended restaurants .

Shri Krishna Janambhoomi

Shri Krishna Janambhoom i is a magnificent and most significant holy place to visit in Mathura. This is the place where Lord Krishna was born. This place comprises caves depicting the stories of Lord Krishna, devotional areas and temples having beautiful idols of Lord Krishna and Radha.

You would not be allowed to take cameras, bags or cellphones inside the complex. Make sure you keep them in the safe lockers outside the temple’s complex.

Tour Duration :  1 hour

Opening Hours : The temple remains open from 5 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 8 PM everyday.

Take a halt for lunch at Brijwasi restaurant which is located outside this temple’s complex.

Bankey Bihari Ji Temple

Bankey Bihari Ji Temple is the most renowned and holiest temple in Vrindavan . This temple is visited by millions of devotees every year with the hopes of wish fulfillment and to get a glimpse of the mesmerizing idol of Lord Krishna.

You will have to go through narrow lanes to reach this temple. Beware of notorious monkeys too! They are known for snatching stuff from people, especially spectacles/sunglasses.

Tour Duration : 45 minutes

Timings : The temple remains open from 9 AM to 8:30 PM everyday.

Iskcon Temple

Get mesmerized by the tunes of Hare Rama Hare Krishna at the Iskcon Temple. This is the most well maintained temple in Vrindavan. Once inside the temple you will see devotees soulfully dancing and chanting Hare Rama Hare Krishna . There are many facilities within the temple premises for the visitors. You can buy a religious book, gifts, souvenirs, have food or visit the holy museum located upstairs in the temple.

Tour Duration : 1 hour

Timings : The temple remains open from 5 AM to 8:30 PM everyday.

Prem Mandir

The Prem Mandir is a must visit temple in Vrindavan . This architectural wonder is built of white Italian marble. The various sculptures, decorations and intricate carvings showcase the tales of Lord Krishna. It is highly recommended to visit the Prem Mandir during the evening to witness its impressive visual light effects. It can easily be termed as one of the most beautiful temples of Modern India.

Timings : The temple remains open from 5:30 AM to 8:30 PM everyday.

I was way young when I did the exactly tour with my parents, of course my parents too me to these places. And the itinerary looked pretty same. You just refreshed my memories. Somehow I do not have pictures to look at. Could relate to the pictures you posted here.

As these places are very popular but it is very difficult to plan what to see first and how to go from one city to another. But thankfully you have covered all these useful tips in your blog. I have been to Mathura and Vrindavan but not Agra and very soon planning for it.

I have been to Taj Mahal once and we were unlucky because the entire morning Taj Mahal was closed for some reason so all the visitor had to wait to the afternoon and it was crowded!

I wish we would have visit Mathura and Vrindavan as it looks as these places as a lot to offer! Thank you for a detailed guide of these places, very helpful!

I did not realise that Mathura and Vrindavan are so close to Agra, only 60 kms ahead! I visited those cities when I was a little child and don’t remember much from my trip except that my grandparents took me to several temples while we were there! Agra, however, was a more recent trip for me so I have to agree with Taj Mahal, Agra Fort and Fatehpur Sikri being the top 3 places to visit there.

I’ve always wanted to visit Agra because of the Taj Mahal! You’ve also given me enough inspiration to make it a worthwhile trek out of New Delhi to see. I think the fort would be a great historical aspect to understand Agra and the surrounding region and I love the temples that you included!

Its been a bit over a decade since I went on this trip. It was a super memorable one coz we took a day and half train from Chennai to Delhi! It was indeed super fun. Yeah, I did one of those coach tours from Delhi to Agra, Mathura & Vrindavan. We went to Fatehpur Sikri by ourselves later. Nostalgic…..

I have visit Mathura and Vrindavan these are amazing holy places in India. Agra is very nice too because of famous Taj Mahal and fatehpur sikri.

To be honest, never thought that the Agra area is that large. It needs two days, that is good to know.

Agra and Brindavan are my favortie places. I love the serenity and the beautiful buildings around this place. I think I’ll explore these places one more time.

A Perfect Mathura-Vrindavan 3 Day Itinerary

Mathura and Vrindavan are not new names in the tourism industry. These historically and theologically significant cities have been famous as tourist destinations for decades now. If you are confused about your Mathura Vrindavan Tour, look no further. It all began with Hindu pilgrims attempting to achieve atonement by visiting the birthplace of Lord Krishna in their trip to Vrindavan.

• Elephant Conservation & Care Center : This is India’s first and only Elephant Conservation and Care Center. It is a safe haven for the rehabilitation of rescued elephants. The facility offers guided tours to the tourists, and you get to watch the enormous mammals live their daily lives. Old, sick, pregnant, and lost elephants are all brought in here. 
• Radha Kund and Shyam Kund : Radha Kund and Shyam Kunds are famous water reservoirs that tourists never miss. Legend has it that Radha and Krishna bathed in these water bodies during their time. You can enjoy the scenic beauty as well as the mythological significance of the location. 

You can have your lunch and pack your bags to travel to Mathura Vrindavan tour by bus, but not before you go a little farther to Nandgaon. Nandgaon is of utmost mythological importance as it is known to be the home of Lord Krishna when he lived with his foster parents Nanda and Yashoda for a decade. It is a one-hour drive from Mathura and marks the end of your second day.  

The final day of the trip consists of rivers, monuments, and good food. 

• Keshi Ghat : If you are on your trip to Vrindavan, you must start the day by watching the sunrise from Keshi Ghat. It is among the top tourist destinations at Vrindavan and you can get a great view of the river Yamuna from the banks. People also take baths in the ghat in order to purify themselves. 
• Prem Mandir : Spread across a campus of 55 acres of land, this temple is a massive structure dedicated to both Radha-Krishna and Sita-Ram. It is on the outskirts of Vrindavan and is maintained by an international non-profit named Jagatguru Kripalu Parishat. 
• Madan Mohan : With terra cotta exterior and river views, the Madan Mohan temple in Vrindavan ranks high among the most popular tourist spots. It is believed to be built in the 16th century and is among the oldest temples in the city. 
• ISKCON Vrindavan : After visiting multiple holy temples, one must stop to visit ISKCON Vrindavan, a true wonder. Iskon also offers accommodation services, which is free to all its members. If you go there within 12 PM to 2 PM, you will be able to avail of their free and delicious lunch. 
• Seva Kunj : After roaming the city for the entire day, you can relax at Seva Kunj and watch the sunset from there, as the location promises breathtaking views of the sunset before returning to your home boarding a UPSRTC bus the next day.

This post is about How to Plan Mathura – Vrindavan – Agra via Nandgaon, Barsana, Govardhan, Gokul – Budget Trip (Inc. Travel Cost, Stay, and Food) From New Delhi / Chandigarh .

Let’s start our journey with a small introduction of the cities we will visit during our trip.

It is scattered with numerous temples having significance; the town’s main temple is the Dwarkadheesh temple, where the devotees assemble during every festival. Sri Krishna Janam Bhumi is another site to visit; it is where Lord Krishna was born; similarly, Lord Krishna’s rest place after his triumph over the tyrant Kansa is the Vishram Ghat. Other points of attraction are the Gita Mandir, Radhakund, and more.

You get to find out more about Lord Krishna’s childhood and love interests with your visit to another town near Mathura, Vrindavan. Explore more what all these temples have to offer. The Banke Bihari Temple is a well-known shrine; the temple it is dedicated to is believed to have been the great Krishna devotee. The oldest temple in the area is the Madan Mohan Temple; the most beautifully designed temple is the Sri Radha Raman Mandir temple. Other temples are the Prem Mandir, ISKCON temple, and more.

Nandgaon is a significant religious and tourist destination  owing to its association with Lord Krishna . Every year thousands flock to the town during Holi to witness the wonderful festival of Lathmar Holi.

It is believed that Krishna, in his childhood, resided in Nandgaon with his family. Nandgaon was named after Nand Baba, the father of Krishna.

Barsana is believed to be the home of the Hindu goddess Radha, the consort of Krishna. It is in the Braj region. The main attraction of the town is Radha Rani Temple.

The town where Krishna spent his childhood , Gokul, is an important pilgrimage destination. From temples dedicated to Lord Krishna to the sites where Lord Krishna lived and played is the must-see in Gokul. Performing a pilgrimage is the top thing to do in Gokul.

Lord Krishna lifted the Govardhan Hill during his childhood on one finger to save his village of Mathura from fierce rains and thunderstorms. This hill is considered holy and is visited by worshipers on Guru Purnima, Govardhan Puja, in devotion by walking 23 km barefoot around the mountain. After Lord Krishna had saved his village, he told everyone to worship the hill, which is why Govardhan Puja is a day after Diwali. It is a serene place and definitely, a must-visit!

Agra is  best known for the Taj Mahal (17th century), designated a UNESCO World Heritage site in 1983 . A complex mausoleum, the Taj Mahal is often considered to be the world’s best example of Mughal architecture. The Mughal emperor Shah Jahān built it for his favourite wife, Mumtāz Maḥal, in the mid-17th century.

You need this budget if you plan a budget trip to Mathura – Vrindavan – Agra (Including Barsana, Gokul, Govardhan and Nandgaon) for 4 nights and 5 days. Let me show you how!

Here is the itinerary to Plan Mathura – Vrindavan – Agra via Nandgaon, Barsana, Govardhan, Gokul – Budget Trip

Delhi – Mathura (160 KM and takes around 3 hours to reach via Road Trip)

Being reasonably close to the capital (Delhi), your journey to Mathura begins from here. It takes around 3 hours to reach (by Road) but can reduce to one hour if you opt to travel via train. 

I am living in Chandigarh and opt to go to Mathura via Train.

Chandigarh to Mathura via Train costs you approx 750 INR for the 3rd AC and 300 INR for the Sleeper Coach.

Traveling from New Delhi costs you approximately 600 INR for the 3rd AC and 200 INR for the Sleeper Coach. 

Check-in at the pre-booked Hotel, and after freshening up and having lunch, start exploring the birthplace of Lord Krishna. Stay in a Hotel (near Janambhumi) costs you approx 1200 INR per night.

• Visit JanamBhumi  (visiting hours 5 AM to 12 Noon and 4 PM to 9:30 PM.); it is where Lord Krishna was born.
• Spend some time in Janambhumi and proceed towards  Dwarkadheesh Temple, Mathura  (visiting hours 6:30 AM to 10:30 AM and 4 PM to 7 PM), which holds an exciting architecture in the area.
• Move towards  Vishram Ghat  (5 AM to 8 PM) ,  Lord Krishna’s rest place after triumphing over the tyrant Kansa.
• Vishram ghat is famous for its boat rides  (which cost approx 50 INR per person)  since it is at the center of the other ghats. You can experience the joy of capturing the scenic views along the river Yamuna. During the ride, you can view the entire stretch of the river Yamuna. Different types of boats at different prices are available at the Ghat.
• The most beautiful aspect of all is the evening prayers and Arti that shouldn’t be missed. An Arti is held every evening. Furthermore, thousands of oil lamps float down the river, which is a beautiful sight. Arti’s timings in summer are 7 AM to 7.15 AM, and in winter, it’s 6.45 AM to 7 AM. The evening aarti timings are 7 PM, both in summer and winter.
• You can also experience watching Kans Quila during your Boat Ride.

You can visit other temples too, keeping in mind the time limit. After a long day of full exploration, you can go to the Hotel after Dinner to retire.

• Wake up early and move towards Nandgaon; it’s approx 55 KM from Mathura and takes 1 hour 30 minutes to reach. 
• Visit Nand Mahal and Paawan Sarovar.
• Move towards Barsana (Nandgaon to Barsana is 10 KM far and takes approx 20 minutes)
• Visit Radha Rani Mandir
• Move towards Govardhan (21 KM distance from Barsana and takes approximately 35 minutes to reach) and enjoy your Brunch here.
• Now it’s time for Govardhan Parikrma (14 KM); you can also opt via Rikshaw (100 INR per person) 
• Visit Giriraj Mandir, Kusum Sarovar, Radha Kund, and move towards Mathura (22 KM in the distance and takes approx 50 minutes).
• Enjoy your Dinner here, and now it’s time to sleep.
• Wake up early and move towards Vrindavan (15 KM and takes approx 25 minutes to reach)
• Visit Pagal baba mandir, Radha Vallabh Temple, Banke Bihari Mandir, ISKCON Temple, Kaanch Mandir, Vaishno Devi Mandir, Nandi Van, Keshi Ghat, Madan Mohan Mandir, Radha Raman Temple, Rangnath Mandir, Birla (Gita) Temple and Prem Mandir (the Evening is ideal for exploring  Prem Mandir, Vrindavan .), visiting hours of all these temples are about 5 AM to 11:30 AM and 4 PM to 8 PM. 
• Dinner in Mathura
• It’s time to check out from Hotel and move towards Gokul (10 KM in Distance and takes approx 30 minutes)
• Visit Gokul Dhaam and Raman Reti Aashram
• Enjoy your Brunch in Gokul and Move Towards Agra (55 KM Distance and takes approx 1 hour 10 minutes)
• Check-in at pre-booked Hotel and explore the local market of Agra in the Evening.
• Enjoy your Breakfast
• Check out From the Hotel and Visit Tajmahal (8 AM). To visit the main mausoleum of the Tajmahal, one has to buy an additional ticket of 200 INR along with the regular ticket. A regular ticket costs 50 INR for Indians and 1100 INR for Foreigners.  Keep in mind that Tajmahal is closed every Friday. Use Cloakroom to keep your luggage. There are two cloakrooms at each East and West gate of the Taj Mahal  with 107 storage blocks, including lockers.  Small handbags are allowed at the Taj Mahal complex, but big bags are prohibited at the Taj Mahal . You may carry only a mobile phone, camera, and small money bag, but smoking items, eatable items, and electronic items like a camera tripod, Pendrive, knife, lighter, matchbox, etc., are not allowed.
• Visit Redfort. Agra Fort timings are from sunrise to sunset on all days of the week. The opening hours are between  6 AM to 6 PM . Entry  tickets  are 50 INR ( Weekdays except for Friday)  and 40 INR  (Friday)  for Indians, and foreigners have to pay 650 INR ( Weekdays except for Friday)  and 600 INR  (Friday)  for the entry.
• Visit Mehtab Bagh. Entry  tickets  are 25 INR for Indians, and foreigners have to pay 300 INR for the entry.
• Visit Agra Railway Station to head back to Delhi/ Chandigarh or from wherever you are from or where ever you want to go. The trip has ended, but the fond memory of the place remains.

The temple is historically known as the place where Lord Krishna came to meet Radha. The Ras Leela is performed here regularly and it is a great feeling to experience it.

The temple is built in typical Indian architectural style and it has around 1600 wild Tulsi trees depicting the Gopis in the complex. At the temple complex there is a tank believed to have been created by Lord Krishna for Radha Devi.

4. Banke Bihari Temple

This is one of the more crowded temples in Vrindavan. Most of the devotees here come on pilgrimages. It is best to go here to experience the local culture of Vrindavan.

From the time the temple opens to the time it closes, bhajans and prayers are chanted non-stop and devotees rush to the main idol to offer garland tributes. The best time to visit is during Holi when they celebrate the festival with festivities and colour.

5. Govardhan Hill

The Govardhan Hill is considered to be a holy place. It is rooted in Hindu mythology and many people come to visit this iconic place. According to ancient Hindu texts, the Govardhan Hill was lifted by Lord Krishna on his index finger to save his village and the villagers.

It is well known for its mystical powers and is made of sandstone. The best way to explore the place is on foot. On the way to the hill, there are a few food stores, famous for their kachoris.

The Best Places to Visit in Mathura

This place is believed to be where Lord Krishna was born. It often gets crowded and there is a huge queue to enter. Mobile phones and cameras are not allowed to be carried inside the temple.

Spend a few moments in prayer and browse through the decorative artwork inside the temple and then move ahead to the caves that are located nearby. There are many adorable paintings on the temple walls and the place had excellent tourist facilities such as a cloak room and clean toilets.

2. Prem Mandir

This stellar white temple is dedicated to Lord Radha Krishna and Sita Ram. Inside the temple, there are artworks and paintings depicting the life of the two.

When you go during prayer time, you can hear beautiful satsangs being sung by devotees. There is a canteen in the temple premises that services excellent home-cooked, vegetarian food.

3. Kusum Sarovar

Kusum Sarovar is a sacred place for Hindus and is situated on the way to Govardhanagiri. The temple here has stunning Rajasthani architecture and it is considered to be auspicious.

There is also an alluring sandstone monument that is great to see. Swimming in the lake is safe and you can even enjoy long walks around the lake.

4. Jama Masjid

Visit the Jama Masjid and have a glance at typical Islamic art. The mosque has outstanding minarets and marvellous carvings. Entry to the main sanctum is not allowed for non-muslims, but you can see the structure from the outside.

Don’t forget to have a look at the mosaic artwork on the exterior of the mosque. The Masjid was built by Nabir Khan, the Governor of Aurangzeb in 1661.

5. Dwarkadhish Temple

Yet another historic temple in Mathura, the Dwarkadhish Temple is where you can sit in silence in an awesome atmosphere for prayer. The temple looks stunning and is built using a true Indian architectural style.

This is one of the most colourful, artistic and beautiful temples in Mathura. Although the place is crowded, officials have made it easy to enter and exit the temple via a queue system. A great perk of visiting this temple is the delicious bhog offered to devotees and guests at the temple.

The Best Places to Visit Near Mathura

1. kokilavan dham.

The temple is located close to Mathura in a town called Kokila. The place is rooted in history and is considered to be holy. The drive to the village is scenic and beautiful, you need to pass through 3 kilometres of a mountain to get to this place.

2. Dauji Mandir

The Dauji Mandir is located close to Mathura. The temple is dedicated to Lord Balarama, an incarnation of Lord Vishnu. The shrine has three doors and inside the main sanctum you can see beautiful artwork on the walls and decorated idols of Lord Balarama and his wife, Revati.
