Joint adventure travel insurance policies offer many benefits to couples. One of the main benefits is that they can save couples money by providing coverage for both individuals under one policy. This is especially beneficial for couples who are traveling on a budget.

Understanding joint travel insurance policies, what is a joint policy.

A joint travel insurance policy is a type of policy that covers two or more people traveling together. In the case of couples, a joint policy is a way to cover both individuals under one policy. With a joint policy, couples can save money on travel insurance premiums as the cost of the policy is typically less than buying two separate policies.

Eligibility Criteria for Couples

To be eligible for a joint travel insurance policy, couples must meet certain criteria. First and foremost, they must be traveling together. This means that they must be on the same itinerary and have the same travel dates. Additionally, they must be in a committed relationship, such as being married or in a domestic partnership.

When applying for a joint travel insurance policy, couples will need to provide documentation of their relationship, such as a marriage certificate or proof of domestic partnership. They will also need to provide information about their trip, such as their travel dates, destination, and any activities they plan to participate in.

It’s important to note that not all travel insurance providers offer joint policies. Couples should research different providers to find one that offers joint policies and compare the coverage and cost to determine the best option for their needs.

Key Benefits of Adventure Travel Insurance for Couples

Traveling with your significant other can be an exciting and rewarding experience, but it also comes with its own set of risks. That’s why it’s important to consider  purchasing adventure travel insurance  for couples. Here are some key benefits of this type of insurance:

Medical Emergencies and Evacuation

One of the most important benefits of adventure travel insurance for couples is  medical coverage . In the event of a medical emergency, this insurance can cover the  cost of medical treatment , hospitalization, and emergency medical evacuation. This is particularly important for adventure sports enthusiasts who are more prone to injuries. With this type of coverage, couples can have peace of mind knowing that they will be taken care of in the event of a medical emergency.

Trip Cancellation and Interruption

Another benefit of adventure travel insurance for couples is  trip cancellation and interruption coverage . This type of insurance can reimburse couples for non-refundable expenses if their trip is cancelled or interrupted due to unforeseen circumstances such as illness, injury, or extreme weather. This can include expenses such as airfare, hotel reservations, and tour fees. This coverage can help couples avoid losing money due to unexpected cancellations or interruptions.

Adventure Sports Coverage

For couples who enjoy adventure sports such as skiing, scuba diving, or mountain climbing, adventure travel insurance can provide coverage specifically for these activities. Regular travel insurance plans may have exclusions for activities that are considered risky, but adventure travel insurance can cover these activities. This type of coverage can provide protection for injuries sustained during these activities, as well as damage to equipment. With adventure sports coverage, couples can enjoy their favorite activities with the peace of mind that comes with knowing they are protected.

In summary, adventure travel insurance for couples can provide peace of mind and  protection while traveling . With coverage for medical emergencies, trip cancellations and interruptions, and adventure sports, couples can focus on enjoying their trip without worrying about the potential risks.

How to Choose the Right Policy

When it comes to choosing the right  adventure travel insurance policy for couples , there are a few things to keep in mind. Here are some tips to help you make an informed decision.

Comparing Different Plans

First and foremost, it’s important to compare different plans to find the one that best suits your needs. Look for plans that offer coverage for the specific activities you plan on doing, such as skiing, snowboarding, or scuba diving. Consider the coverage limits and deductibles, as well as any exclusions or limitations that may apply.

To make it easier to compare plans, consider creating a table that lists the different policies side by side. Include important details such as the coverage amounts, deductibles, and exclusions. This can help you quickly and easily compare the different plans and identify the one that offers the best value for your money.

Reading the Fine Print

Once you’ve narrowed down your options to a few different policies, it’s important to read the fine print carefully. Look for any exclusions or limitations that may apply, as well as any specific requirements you need to meet in order to be eligible for coverage.

Pay close attention to the coverage limits and deductibles, as well as any additional benefits that may be included, such as emergency medical evacuation or trip cancellation coverage. Make sure you understand exactly what is covered and what is not, so you can make an informed decision about which policy to choose.

By taking the time to compare different plans and read the fine print carefully, you can find the right adventure travel insurance policy for you and your partner. With the right coverage in place, you can enjoy your trip with peace of mind, knowing that you’re protected in case of an unexpected event or emergency.

Claims and Support

Filing a claim.

When it comes to  filing a claim  for adventure travel insurance, couples can expect a straightforward process. If one traveler or couple that is insured has to cancel for a covered reason, they can file a claim for their portion of the total trip cost if everyone else still decides to take the trip. Couples should ensure they have all the  necessary documentation , such as receipts and medical reports, to support their claim.

It is essential to understand the policy’s terms and conditions before filing a claim, as some insurance policies may  not cover certain activities  or destinations. Couples should also be aware of any deductibles or excesses that may apply to their policy.

Customer Support and Assistance

When purchasing  adventure travel insurance , couples should consider the level of customer support and assistance provided by the insurance provider. It is essential to choose a provider that offers 24/7 customer support and assistance, especially when traveling to remote or unfamiliar destinations.

Couples should also consider the type of support and assistance provided. Some providers offer emergency medical assistance, while others may offer travel assistance, such as help with lost luggage or flight cancellations.

In addition to customer support and assistance, couples should also consider the insurance provider’s reputation and financial stability. It is essential to choose a provider with a proven track record of paying claims promptly and fairly.

Overall, adventure travel insurance can provide couples with peace of mind when embarking on a trip. By understanding the policy’s terms and conditions and choosing a reputable insurance provider, couples can ensure they are protected in the event of an unforeseen event.

What travel insurance covers

How much does travel insurance cost, types of travel insurance, how to get travel insurance, what to look for in travel insurance, best travel insurance comparison sites, which insurance company is best for travel insurance, when to skip travel insurance, travel insurance, recapped.

Travel insurance can cover medical expenses, emergencies, trip interruptions, baggage, rental cars and more.

Cost is affected by trip length, pre-existing medical conditions, depth of coverage, your age and add-ons.

You can get it through credit cards or third-party companies, & can shop on travel insurance comparison sites.

Before buying, evaluate risks, know existing coverage, obtain quotes online and review policy details warily.

Skip it if you buy flexible airfare and hotels, already have coverage or only book refundable activities.

Booking travel always carries some degree of uncertainty. Travel insurance provides a safety net so you can step out with confidence. You may not need travel insurance for inexpensive trips, but it can provide a sense of security when you prepay for pricey reservations, a big international trip or travel during cold and flu season, which can be unpredictable.

According to insurance comparison site Squaremouth, travelers in 2023 spent an average of $403 for comprehensive coverage, compared to $96 for medical-only policies. Comprehensive plans typically cost between 5% and 10% of the insured trip cost.

Since that price tag is no small amount, it helps to know how to shop smart for travel insurance. Here's how to find the right travel insurance plan for you and your next adventure.

Depending on the type of coverage you’re looking for, the chart below will help you determine what to look for when selecting a policy:

Depending on the policy, travel insurance reimburses you or offers services when something goes awry. There’s even coverage for the worst-case scenario: if you die in an accident while traveling. Accidental death coverage pays your beneficiary a lump sum in that case.

Before you buy, take a little time to get familiar with different types of travel insurance products, how it’s priced, and what it covers and excludes. If you’re traveling during these uncertain times, you’ll want to make sure that the policy you select covers coronavirus-related emergencies. Usually, the more thorough the coverage, the more it will cost.

Travel insurance costs vary depending on:

Length and cost of the trip: The longer and more expensive the trip, the higher the policy cost.

Cost of local health care: High health-care costs in your destination can drive up the price of trip insurance.

Medical conditions you want covered: Conditions you already have will increase the cost of travel insurance coverage.

Amount and breadth of coverage: The more risks a policy covers, the more it will cost.

Your age: Generally the older you are, the higher the price.

Any optional supplement you add to your policy : Cancel For Any Reason , Interrupt For Any Reason and more.

Keep these factors in mind when considering different travel insurance options.

You’ll find a wide selection of travel protection plans when you shop for a policy.

Typically, travel insurance is sold as a package, known as a comprehensive plan, which includes a variety of coverage.

Here are seven of the most common types of travel insurance:

Travel medical insurance

These plans provide health insurance while you’re away from home. Although in some ways these policies work like traditional health plans, generally you cannot use travel health insurance for routine medical events. For example, a routine medical checkup is usually not covered. In addition, these policies often include limitations on coverage and exclusions for pre-existing conditions.

Although most travel insurance plans cover many recreational activities, such as skiing and horseback riding, they often exclude adventure sports, such as skydiving or parasailing, or competition in organized sporting events. You may need to buy a special travel policy designed for adventure or competitive sports.

International travel insurance

Most likely, your U.S.-based medical insurance will not work while you’re traveling internationally, and Medicare does not provide any coverage once you leave the United States outside of a few very specific exemptions. If you plan on traveling abroad, purchasing travel medical insurance could make a lot of sense.

Trip cancellation, interruption and delay

Trip cancellation coverage reimburses you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses if the tour operator goes out of business or you have to cancel the trip for one of the covered reasons outlined in the policy, such as:

Your own illness.

The illness or death of a family member who’s not traveling with you.

Natural disasters.

Trip interruption insurance covers the nonrefundable cost of the unused portion of the trip if it is interrupted due to a reason outlined in the policy.

Trip delay coverage reimburses you for expenses such as lodging and meals if you’re delayed during a trip (e.g., your flight gets canceled due to weather ).

Many package policies cover all three. These policies are different from the cancellation waivers that cruise lines and tour operators offer, the Insurance Information Institute says. Waivers are cheap, ranging from $40 to $60, and often include restrictions. For example, according to the institute, waivers might not refund your money if you cancel immediately before departure. Waivers are technically not insurance policies.

Some companies offer additional layers of coverage at extra cost. “Cancel For Any Reason” coverage will reimburse a large part of the trip cost, no matter why you back out. And some companies let you pay extra to cover pre-existing conditions if you cancel for medical reasons.

Some insurers and comparison sites let you customize a policy by choosing types of coverage a la carte. For example, TravelInsurance.com is a comparison site that provides quotes from different providers.

Baggage and personal belongings

How does lost luggage insurance work? This coverage reimburses you for baggage and personal belongings that are lost, stolen or damaged during the trip. Some plans also reimburse you for extra expenses if you experience a baggage delay for more than a certain period, such as 12 hours.

Your renters or homeowners insurance may cover personal belongings while you are traveling. It’s best to review your homeowners insurance policy to determine the level of coverage it provides so you do not end up paying for a benefit you already have.

Emergency medical assistance, evacuation and repatriation

This coverage pays medical expenses if you get sick or injured on a trip . Medical evacuation coverage pays for transporting you to the nearest hospital, and medical repatriation pays for flying you to your home country.

» Learn more: Can I get travel insurance for pre-existing medical conditions?

24-hour assistance

This service is included with many package plans. The insurer provides a 24-hour hotline that you can call when you need help, such as booking a flight after a missed connection, finding lost luggage, or locating a doctor or lawyer.

Generally, travel insurance companies do not cover sports or any activity that can be deemed risky. If you’re thinking of incorporating adventurous activities into your vacation, choose a plan that includes adventure sports coverage.

Most travel insurers cover a wide array of services, but the specific options vary. Some plans include concierge services, providing help with restaurant referrals, tee time reservations and more. Many services also offer information before the trip, such as required vaccinations. The only way to know what’s included is to read the policy.

Accidental death and dismemberment insurance

This coverage pays a lump sum to your beneficiary, such as a family member, if you die in an accident while on the trip. Accidental death and dismemberment insurance policies also pay a portion of the sum to you if you lose a hand, foot, limb, eyesight, speech or hearing. Some plans apply only to accidental death in a plane.

This coverage may be duplicative if you already have sufficient life insurance, which pays out whether you die in an accident or from an illness. You may also already have accidental death and dismemberment insurance through work, so it's best to check your policies to ensure you’re not overpaying.

Rental car coverage

Rental car insurance pays for repairing your rental car if it’s damaged in a wreck, by vandals or in a natural disaster. The coverage doesn't include liability insurance, which pays for damage to other vehicles or for the medical treatment of others if you cause an accident and are held responsible.

Ask your car insurance company whether your policy will cover you when renting cars on the trip. U.S. car insurance policies generally don’t cover you when driving in other countries, except Canada.

Car insurance requirements are complex because they vary among countries. You can usually purchase liability insurance from the rental car company. Learn about car insurance requirements by searching for auto insurance by country on the U.S. Embassy website .

A note about single vs. long-term policies

Single trip insurance plans are a great option for those going on a single trip for a specific length of time (e.g., a two-week vacation) and then returning home. The price of the policy is usually determined by the cost of the trip.

Long-term travel policies cover you for multiple trips, but there are limitations to how long you can be away from home, if you can return home during your travels and how many trips you can take. In addition, trip cancellation and interruption coverage is either not offered or capped at a dollar amount that can be significantly below the total cost of all the trips taken during the covered period.

Long-term travel insurance plans — often called 'multi-trip' or 'annual travel insurance' — are a suitable option for those who travel often and are satisfied with the amount of trip cancellation coverage for all the trips they take over the duration of the policy.

Below, we include how to obtain travel insurance, along with the pros and cons of each option.

Keep these tips in mind when you’re considering a trip insurance policy.

Evaluate the financial risks you face when traveling. Can you bear those costs yourself, or do you want insurance?

Examine what coverage you already have: Does your credit card offer travel insurance? Do you have renters or homeowners insurance to cover belongings? What is the deductible? Will your health plan cover you in all the locations where you travel?

Get quotes for trip insurance online. Choose a package of the benefits you need and compare prices for similar coverage among carriers.

Narrow your choices and then read the policy fine print to understand what’s covered, what’s excluded and the limits on coverage. You may find that the lowest-priced policy is too restrictive and that paying a little more gets you the coverage you need. Or you might find that the cheapest, most basic policy fits the bill.

There are a few scenarios when spending extra on travel insurance doesn't really make sense, like:

You booked flexible airline tickets.

Yes, especially for nonrefundable trips and travel during the COVID-era. Whether you purchase a comprehensive travel insurance policy or have travel insurance from your credit card, you shouldn't travel without having some sort of travel protection in place to safeguard you and your trip. Travel insurance can protect you in case of an unexpected emergency such as a canceled flight due to weather, a medical event that requires hospitalization, lost luggage and more.

There are many good travel insurance policies out there and a policy that may be great for you may not be good for someone else. Selecting the best plan depends on what coverage you would like and your trip details.

For example, World Nomads offers a comprehensive travel insurance policy that has excellent coverage for adventure sports. Allianz provides coverage for trips of varying lengths of time through its single trip plans and multi-trip plans. Some providers offer add-on options like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance. If you’re not sure which plan to go with, consider looking at trip insurance comparison sites like Squaremouth or Insuremytrip.

Yes, you can. However, it's better to purchase it sooner rather than later, ideally right after booking your trip because the benefits begin as soon as you purchase a policy.

Let’s say you’re going on a trip in a month and a week before departure, you fall and break your leg. If you’ve purchased a travel insurance policy, you can use your trip cancellation benefits to get your nonrefundable deposit back.

Most comprehensive travel insurance plans offer trip cancellation, trip interruption, emergency medical and dental, medical evacuation, trip delay and lost luggage coverage. Many plans offer COVID coverage, but you’ll always want to check to ensure that the policy you choose provides that benefit if you’re traveling during these times. Some plans may also allow you to add features like Cancel For Any Reason travel insurance.

It depends which credit card you have. Premium travel cards like the Chase Sapphire Reserve® and The Platinum Card® from American Express offer travel insurance benefits if you book a trip using your card or points.

However, the coverage provided by the credit cards is usually lower than if you purchased a standalone policy. Review the travel insurance benefits on your credit card and check that the limits are adequate before foregoing from purchasing a separate plan.

If my travelling partner and i are on the same policy, are the benefit amounts the same as if we had separate cover.

This depends on the insurer and the plan type. Most insurers will treat each adult separately and offer both adults equal benefit limits across the board. A small number of insurers will offer each adult equal benefit limits on most items, but will impose a combined limit on certain items like rental vehicle excess and personal liability. However, in most cases, you are getting the equivalent of two individual policies with the discount in price being the only difference.

Are we both covered if we travel separately for some parts of the trip?

Most single-trip policies don't tell you how you need to spend your time together overseas. As long as you arrive and depart from the same destination on the same date, you can spend as much or as little time together as you want. But be careful, there are a few insurers who will require you to spend a certain percentage of the trip together. If you choose one of these insurers, you will need to ask them how they determine this.

What if you or your travelling partner has a pre-existing condition?

If you or your travelling partner has a pre-existing condition that isn't listed in the insurers' "automatically covered" category, that person needs to declare it and may need to answer a questionnaire and/or undertake a medical assessment.

At that point, the insurer will say one of three things:

  • They'll cover the condition at no extra cost
  • They'll cover it for an additional premium
  • They won't cover it at all

If the insurer won't cover the pre-existing condition at all or you or your travel companion decides not to pay an additional premium, then you won't be able to claim for anything related to that condition. This will not impact the cost or benefits associated with the other traveller's policy in any way.

If you or your travelling partner fails to declare a pre-existing medical condition, any claim that person makes as a result of that condition could be refused. When in doubt, declare anything you are unsure of. The insurer will lead you in the right direction.

What benefits are there if my travelling companion passes away or is hospitalised?

Even if your companion isn't insured but you are, your policy may offer benefits that will cover your expenses related to your travelling companion's hospitalisation or death. Your PDS will define what is meant by travelling companion in this scenario and describe any limitations and exclusions related to the claim. Don't get this confused with how they define who is eligible for couples travel insurance.

What if I'm travelling with dependents?

Couples travel insurance is not mean to cover dependents. A single adult travelling with one child would likely save money by buying a single policy and nominating one dependent. A couple travelling with children would be moved to a family policy. Couples policies are reserved for two adults who each need their own cover and are looking to save a little money.

Is couples travel insurance worth it?

You really can't judge the value of the policy based on the discount percentage alone. Every traveller has a unique set of needs, which is why each insurer offers a range of unique policies. It pays to shop around, compare a range of policies and read the PDS to find out what is and isn’t covered.

Can we combine the benefits of both policies to cover a single lost item?

You and your travelling partner will each have your own policy that covers lost or stolen items up to a certain value. If you have joint ownership of a high-value item, only one of you can make a claim on it if it is lost or stolen, and you will only be reimbursed for the amount listed on that person's policy.

If the value of the item is higher than the one policy allows, you will not be able to claim the additional value using the second policy. If you are worried about one of your high-value items, you will need to make sure at least one of your policies can cover the full cost of the item.

Does this policy cover cruises or adventure sports?

There are a number of activities that standard policies do not cover, and this is no different for a couples policy. You may need to bolt on additional cover for activities like snow sports, adventure sports, cruises and golf outings. Most insurers will ask you about these activities as part of the quote process.

Can we get couples cover on an annual multi-trip policy?

Yes. Many of the same providers who offer single-trip couples policies also offer annual multi-trip couples policies, and you may be eligible for a discount. The rules are a little stricter around the two people travelling separately.

Everything you need to know about joint and family travel insurance

  • Everything you need to know about joint and family travel insurance

If you’re planning a holiday with your partner or family, buying joint or family travel insurance can often work out cheaper than taking out separate policies – but not always.

While joint or family travel insurance makes sense for some people, for others it may not be the most cost-effective option, so here’s everything you need to know.

What is joint travel insurance?

What is family travel insurance, what do joint and family travel insurance policies cover, what do joint and family travel insurance policies not cover, what are the cover limits for joint or family travel insurance, do you always need to travel together with joint or family annual multi-trip travel insurance, why might you want to buy joint or family travel insurance, where can you find joint or family travel insurance, get 20% ‡ off your travel insurance quote from staysure.

We have teamed up with Staysure to provide you with first class travel insurance, tailored to suit your needs. You can also take advantage of our 20% ‡ discount , just quote REST03  at checkout.

Sometimes known as couples travel insurance, a joint travel insurance policy usually provides protection for two people over 18 years of age, who are in a relationship and are living together. You don’t need to be married to take out a joint travel insurance policy with your partner, you just need to live at the same address.

You can usually get single-trip or annual multi-trip joint travel insurance.

Generally, buying joint travel insurance is cheaper than buying two separate policies, so lots of people choose to buy their travel insurance like this. However, if one of you has a pre-existing medical condition, this could push the price up for both of you, in which case it might be cheaper to buy separate policies.

Family travel insurance usually provides protection for one or two adults plus at least one child. Most policies will allow you to add up to eight children to a policy, but they all need to be under 18 and will usually need to live at the same address as the adults.

You can usually buy either single-trip cover if you want insurance for a two-week break, for example, or annual multi-trip family travel insurance, if you’re planning to go away together two or three times in the same year.

If anyone in your family has a pre-existing medical condition, this could push up the price of cover considerably, so it might work out cheaper to either get separate policies, or take out a family policy with standalone cover with a specialist provider for the person with a medical condition.

Joint and family travel insurance policies provide protection for all the usual things you’d expect to see on a travel insurance policy, including:

  • Medical treatment and expenses
  • Cancellation and curtailment
  • Travel delay or disruption
  • Repatriation
  • Lost, stolen or damaged possessions and luggage
  • Money and passports
  • Legal protection
  • Personal liability.

Standard joint or family travel insurance policies won’t usually cover:

  • Cruises, skiing or extreme sports – you will either need to take out a specialist policy for these activities or you might be able to add them on as optional extras, so make sure to check the fine print
  • Pre-existing medical conditions – if anyone on the policy has a pre-existing condition, you won’t usually have cover for this or any claims made as a result of this condition
  • Incidents related to alcohol or drug abuse – While this sounds extreme, it’s worth noting that insurers often won’t cover accidents that have happened when you’ve had a few drinks
  • Travel to high-risk countries against Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO) advice
  • Acts of terrorism
  • Natural disasters.

You can find out more about what travel insurance will and won’t cover in our guide Travel Insurance for over 50s – Everything you need to know .

‡ Discount applies to the base premium of the policy only and not to medical screening costs or add-ons where relevant. Terms, conditions, and exclusions apply.

The limits to the cover you’ll get depends on where you’re going and for how long, but generally most cover limits will be per person per trip on joint or family travel insurance policies. There are some exclusions to this, however, and usually, things like gadget cover and legal costs limits will be in total. Make sure you check the fine print of your cover so you know exactly what you’re covered for.

There are joint and family travel insurance annual multi-trip policies available that let you travel separately, but this is by no means the norm, so it’s important to read the fine print carefully to make sure you’re covered.

The option to travel separately is more commonly available with joint travel insurance, but it will vary from policy to policy.

If you’re considering taking out family annual multi-trip travel insurance, but some family members won’t be coming on certain trips, make sure it’s still the most cost-effective option. You may find that it’s cheaper overall to buy single-trip policies if some family members won’t be coming on some trips.

There are a number of reasons you might want to buy a joint or family travel insurance policy, including:

  • Convenience – Taking out separate policies for you and your loved ones could be a real faff, but with a joint or family policy, you can get travel protection for everyone in one go.
  • Value for money – Buying joint or family travel insurance policies can work out cheaper than taking out individual ones, so many people choose to buy their insurance this way. Some family policies can even offer free cover for children, so it can be much more cost-effective.

Joint and family travel insurance policies are offered by nearly all insurers, and you should be able to find them on most comparison sites.

Learn more about travel insurance and the different types of cover available in our guide Everything you need to know about travel insurance .

If you’re looking for travel insurance, we have partnered with Staysure to provide you with first class travel insurance, tailored to suit your needs. Couples Travel Insurance: What You Should Know

Couples Travel Insurance

If you are going abroad on a trip with your significant other, getting couples travel insurance is a worthwhile investment. Maybe you have planned a romantic getaway for you and your loved one to celebrate your anniversary or an important milestone in your relationship, or you might be planning to take your special someone on a trip around the world, and you won’t want to face the slightest hiccup when it comes to your health or any other of your travel arrangements.

Although you want everything to go as planned, the unfortunate reality is that no matter how meticulous you are with your planning, there is a chance that you might run into an emergency or two, which could ruin all the fun of your trip. In such a situation, it’ll be a relief to know that your couples travel insurance is there to bail you out and make sure that you are taken care of properly.

Many people overlook the need to have couples travel insurance on hand unless they’ve previously dealt with such a scenario while on their trips. In this blog, I’m going to give you a quick rundown of how this couples travel insurance works, what it covers for you, and how much you can benefit from having it during your travels with your partner.

Being here shows that you are curious about finding out more about couples travel insurance, and you might have doubts about whether to buy one or not, or you might be a traveler who doesn’t realize the importance of this insurance but hopes to learn more about it. Whatever you are here for, I hope this will answer all the questions that are on your mind, and you will learn about how this couples travel insurance works and the benefits you can get from having it in hand.

So, without any more introduction and delay, let’s start taking a look at what couples travel insurance is about!

What is Couples Travel Insurance?

what is couples travel insurance

A joint policy that protects both you and your significant other while you are traveling is known as “couples travel insurance.” It could also work out to be more cost-effective than purchasing two separate policies, and it will certainly simplify the process of filing a claim, as you will only have to deal with a single insurance provider.

This can mean a married couple or simply a couple in a relationship who are cohabiting together. When getting a joint travel insurance policy, you and your partner will usually be offered the same amount of cover. This means both of you will stand to get the same amount of payout should you make a claim.

To put it simply, couples travel insurance policy is the same as for a single person or family. The only difference is that it’s just one policy that covers two people, rather than two separate policies for each person.

Who is Considered a “Couple” for Couples Travel Insurance?

Some insurance providers have specific requirements for what kinds of relationships qualify as “couples,” but in general, a couple is considered to be two people of either gender who are at least 18 years old and who have been living together as a couple. It can refer to a legally wedded couple or a dating couple who have decided to live together.

What are the Perks of Couples Travel Insurance?

Policies may vary, but a comprehensive couples travel insurance policy offers a variety of advantageous features.

Couples Travel Insurance Offers Great Value for Money.

Couples travel insurance will cover any medical costs or hospital bills incurred while traveling outside of the country. Additionally, it covers any unanticipated cancellation fees. It will also cover your personal belongings, luggage, travel documents, credit cards, cash, and cheques. In addition, some policies include personal liability coverage, which safeguards your financial interests if you accidentally injure another individual or damage their property while you are away from home.

Couples Travel Insurance Eliminates the Need to have Two Policies While Saving Money.

Couples Travel Insurance Policies

Couples travel insurance is fast and simple. There is only one policy available, which means that there is only one policy number, one travel insurance certificate, and one contact number that you need to take with you when you travel. Purchasing insurance jointly can also result in cost savings for the couple. When compared to purchasing two separate policies, purchasing a duo policy will earn you greater savings.

However, if one of you needs specialized coverage (possibly due to a pre-existing medical condition), purchasing couples travel insurance may end up costing more. This is because both of you would be impacted by the increased premium.

What is the Average Cost of Couples Travel Insurance?

Because insurance companies believe that older travelers (those over the age of 65) and those who travel with pre-existing health conditions are more likely to make a claim for medical treatment while they are away, the cost of travel insurance for couples can increase depending on your age as well as the ages of both your partners and any pre-existing medical conditions.

Insurers may also take into account any potentially dangerous activities you want to participate in during your stay and may apply additional fees for additional coverage.

Coverage for destinations outside of Europe is often more costly, with the highest rates associated with insurance for destinations such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, and the Caribbean. This is because, in these regions, the cost of receiving medical care is much higher than in others.

Does the Couple Need to Travel Together?

Couple Need to Travel Together

If you have purchased yearly multi-trip couples travel insurance, there are many policies that will enable you to travel separately while still being covered. Nevertheless, it is important to check the terms and conditions of the policy.

What Happens If One of You Has a Medical Issue?

That is not an issue; all you need to do is make sure that your insurer is aware of your health condition at the time that you make the purchase. Depending on the results of your declaration, the insurance provider may cover the condition at no extra cost, charge an additional premium, impose a medical excess, or even exclude coverage completely, depending on the severity of the disease.

Suppose you have doubts about whether the condition will be covered. In that case, you should make sure to contact your insurer immediately to verify that you and your partner will be covered if the condition results in a claim being filed by either of you.

What’s Covered by Couples Travel Insurance?

Medical expenses.

If you get sick, injured or hurt while on vacation, this should assist in paying for any necessary medical care and any flights back to the United States. You might rack up some very hefty medical expenses if you don’t have travel insurance.

Cancellations

A couples travel insurance coverage can assist in covering the expense of a canceled vacation if you or a travel partner gets sick. Be sure to review the policy’s terms and conditions, which will include the types of cancellations for which you are eligible to file a claim, the maximum amount they will pay out, and any excess payment you will be liable for.

Holiday disruption

Couples travel insurance plans may cover payment for vacation interruptions, including missed departures, delayed or canceled flights, or accommodations.

Stolen personal belongings

If anything becomes lost or stolen while you’re away, your couples travel insurance coverage may help pay for it. It’s important to check your policy details, but many will cover lost or damaged luggage. Always double-check your insurance to determine what it covers and how much you may expect to get in reimbursement.

Medical emergencies

Having couples travel insurance might come in handy if you ever find yourself in need of medical attention in a country where you don’t understand the language. You may contact your insurer’s 24-hour hotline for guidance on things like where to seek treatment and how to go home early if you’re unable to travel.

Personal liability

In the event of an accident, while you are on vacation, you may be held financially responsible for the harm caused to another traveler. Personal liability coverage may serve to protect you in such circumstances.

What’s NOT Covered by Couples Travel Insurance?

Extreme sports.

If you and your significant other like adrenaline-pumping activities, double-check that your travel insurance policy includes coverage for your chosen pursuit. Included in this category are extreme sports like skiing and bungee jumping, as well as any other activity that might result in medical attention.

Pre-existing medical conditions

If you have a current or past medical condition, you must mention it to your insurer. Asthma, diabetes, and heart disease are just a few examples of the kinds of illnesses that fall within this category. Any coverage you have for a pre-existing illness might be canceled if you fail to report it.

Restricted destinations

If you go to a place that the Foreign Office has warned its citizens against visiting, your trip won’t be covered by most insurance companies. Visit USAgov to find out more.

Natural disasters and terrorism

These can include “Acts of God” like storms, hurricanes, and floods, as well as acts of terrorism like bombings and shootings. Check your travel insurance to see what is covered and what isn’t covered before you leave.

Drugs and alcohol

For many people, a vacation isn’t complete until they’ve had at least one drink. Your insurance company may deny payment for injuries or illnesses that were caused by your excessive use of alcohol or drugs.

Be sure you know your selected provider’s position on what defines “extreme” alcohol use by reading the fine print of your policy. Be responsible and don’t go crazy on your vacation, or you could end up with more than just a hangover.

What to Consider Before Buying Couples Travel Insurance?

Buying Couples Travel Insurance

When purchasing travel insurance, it is important to consider the financial limits for claims as well as the excess amounts. The excess amount is the portion of a claim that the policyholder is responsible for paying out of pocket. Also, when purchasing travel insurance for a couple, make sure to check whether the excess applies per person or per policy.

Also, consider how much you can actually afford to pay towards a claim. Check to see whether the financial limits apply per person or to the policy as a whole. Don’t hesitate to contact your couples travel insurance provider if you have any questions.

By now, you should have proper knowledge of couples travel insurance and how having the right coverage can make the difference between a relaxing vacation and a stressful ordeal. Even the best-laid vacation plans can go awry, but one way you can help ensure that your trip goes smoothly is by investing in couples travel insurance.

So, be smart and keep that in mind for your next vacation, because couples travel insurance will prove itself a valuable ally in helping you avoid those unwanted headaches on your travels.

Common couples cover exclusions

When looking for cover, be aware that a common exclusion for couples cover, or any travel cover for that matter, is pre-existing medical conditions. These must be declared when you apply for travel insurance or you risk invalidating any claim you make, leaving you and your partner to cover any medical costs yourselves. Also, don't forget that you have to live at the same address to take out couples travel insurance. If you don't, but still want to travel together, you can take out individual or group travel insurance policies. Once your couples cover is arranged you can focus on planning your sightseeing trips, activities, sunbathing, finding the nearest bar or whatever takes your fancy, safe in the knowledge that you are insured.

Is it cheaper to get travel insurance as a couple?

If you’re off on holiday with your significant other, in most instances, buying couples cover as opposed to individual policies will work out as a cheaper more convenient option.

Can you travel separately on couple travel insurance?

Yes, if you’re planning to travel alone on your couples travel insurance policy, you are still covered. So despite having joint couples cover, you can still take trips independently during the year, after all, not all trips away are romantic getaways.

Just make sure that your policy covers you individually for any pre-existing medical conditions you may have and the destination you are travelling to is covered by your annual travel insurance policy .

Does couple travel insurance cover individuals?

All named adults are covered to go on separate holidays over the year with couples annual travel cover (after all absence makes the heart grow fonder). Couples travel insurance is available for adults (over 18) who have been living together in a relationship for at least six months. You needn’t be married, however a relationship is key. If you’re a couple that live separately then look at group travel insurance as an alternative if planning to get away together. While couples wishing to take their children away on holiday with them should book family travel insurance cover.

Why Honeymoon-Specific Coverage Matters

Honeymoons are supposed to be a time to relax after the busy activities surrounding a wedding. Trip cancellations or delays can turn a happy vacation into a stressful experience, and medical emergencies and lost belongings can increase out-of-pocket expenses and deplete your travel budget.

Travel issues are more common than you might think. In December 2022, 5.4% of flights were canceled , and 1.09% of bags were mishandled by airlines, according to Department of Transportation data. Natural disasters are also common. For instance, 10 tropical storms impact the southern U.S. and popular honeymoon destinations in the Caribbean yearly. All these issues could negatively impact what’s supposed to be one of life’s happiest travel experiences.

Travel medical insurance , trip cancellation coverage, and protection for other common travel risks, such as lost luggage, can protect your honeymoon investment from these common delays and disasters and give you peace of mind after departure. Even if the worst occurs and your trip gets canceled, you can receive reimbursement and travel elsewhere or go later without additional costs.

Benefits of Honeymoon Travel Insurance

A single-trip honeymoon travel insurance policy offers several essential benefits for the happy couple. Here is a look at the advantages of insurance coverage for vacationing newlyweds.

  • Financial protections: Honeymoons can cost thousands of dollars. If your trip gets canceled or interrupted due to an illness, disaster or emergency, you can get reimbursed for the trip cost as long as the cancellation was due to one of the insurer’s covered reasons.
  • Support during emergencies: Travel policies cover medical care and evacuations after an illness or injury. The best travel insurance companies also provide access to 24/7 assistance so that you can find care and get support when needed.
  • Managing inconveniences: Lost luggage, delays and missed connections are inconvenient. However, if you purchase travel insurance, you can protect against these issues by purchasing replacements for lost items or booking a hotel and having a meal during an extended delay.
  • Accounting for risks in your destination: You may have concerns about your specific destination. For example, couples traveling to the Caribbean between June and November should be aware that it is hurricane season. Storms are unlikely, but if one does occur, your trip cancellation insurance will kick in and provide reimbursement so that you can travel somewhere else or reschedule after the danger passes.

When you buy travel insurance, you will have several coverage choices, including a comprehensive policy, a stand-alone trip delay and cancellation option or a health insurance plan. Comprehensive honeymoon insurance is usually the best choice if you want all the benefits and do not have an annual plan as a couple.

Enjoy a Stress-Free Getaway with Comprehensive Coverage

A comprehensive trip plan covers the most common issues you could encounter when traveling.

  • Trip cancellation : This coverage reimburses your trip deposit and other prepaid portions of your vacation if you cancel for an acceptable reason. Covered cancellations usually involve an unexpected illness, death in the family or natural disaster in your destination. You can use the reimbursed expenses to plan an alternative trip.
  • Trip interruption : This policy component protects you from significant delays or cancellations after departure. For instance, if you have travel insurance for a Turks and Caicos vacation , it will cover you if a storm shortens your stay and necessitates early evacuation.
  • Emergency medical expenses : This coverage pays for emergency medical care due to an illness or injury on your trip.
  • Medical evacuation : This policy feature pays for you to return home or go to an acceptable medical facility if you are sick or injured and require extensive care.
  • Baggage delay or loss: This feature reimburses you for lost baggage so that you can replace items you need for your trip. If you have a destination wedding, this coverage is useful. It allows you to replace wedding attire and keep your plans on schedule despite a delayed suitcase.

Even if you don’t use the policy benefits, they provide peace of mind. You know that if something unforeseen happens during your trip, it won’t cause a major inconvenience, ruin your travel plans or cause you to pay too much out of pocket.

Factors To Consider When Selecting Your Policy

Several factors affect the price of a travel insurance quote. The trip cost, duration, destinations, means of transport, activities and luggage value all factor into the equation. You also need to consider the coverage limit, which is the maximum amount the insurer will pay for each claim type.

When you get a quote, you should compare it to other policies with similar limits and benefits. You should also look at the fine print to understand the claims process and see if the policy covers pre-existing conditions you might have.

Some honeymoons may require special coverage because of limitations to standard travel policies. For instance, many insurers do not provide scuba diving insurance, so you must purchase additional coverage or get stand-alone insurance for this activity. Also, if you take your honeymoon on a cruise line, you may need a cruise-only policy to cover risks like missed ports of call or delays causing you to miss embarkation.

With proper research and careful consideration of terms and conditions, you can find a policy that meets your needs and covers every aspect of your honeymoon.

The Bottom Line

Honeymoon insurance protects your investment and ensures you do not miss out on your romantic getaway, even if your initial trip gets canceled or interrupted. You need to consider your plans and the risks of your destination. For instance, travel insurance for Costa Rica has different requirements than travel insurance for Aruba .

Once you define your needs, you can research the coverage offered by different providers and select the best protection for your honeymoon plans.

Frequently Asked Questions About Honeymoon Travel Insurance

Is joint travel insurance worth it.

Joint travel insurance is often worthwhile for a honeymoon or any other occasion when you are traveling as a couple. However, factors such as pre-existing medical conditions, trip cancellation coverage through a credit card or trip cost could make two single policies cheaper in some cases.

If the prices are comparable, joint insurance is the better option. It simplifies the claims process and allows you to make one claim instead of two for delays, interruptions or cancellations.

Can you get couple travel insurance?

Yes, a travel insurance provider will allow you to apply for coverage as a couple. You can also get family or group policies if you have a destination wedding.

What are the benefits of honeymoon travel insurance?

Honeymoon travel insurance can provide reimbursement if your trip gets canceled due to a covered reason like an illness or natural disaster in your destination. You can protect your travel investment and use it to have an alternative honeymoon getaway or reschedule for a later time.

Also, medical coverage allows you to protect your nest egg by paying for any expensive healthcare treatments you might need while traveling abroad.

How much does honeymoon travel insurance cost?

The cost of honeymoon travel insurance varies by destination, vacation length, activities, age and trip cost.

Here are examples of costs for travel insurance for a Mexico vacation for a 35-year-old couple from Aug. 1 to Aug. 14, 2023.

  • $168 to insure with Generali Global Assistance
  • $172 with GoReady
  • $192 with AXA Assistance USA

Prices are for standard policies with 100% cancellation coverage and at least $50,000 in medical coverage. The total cost of the trip, including airfare and hotels, is $4,800.

Is Travel Insurance Worth It? Evaluating the Value and Benefits

Our experts answer readers' insurance questions and write unbiased product reviews ( here's how we assess insurance products ). In some cases, we receive a commission from our partners ; however, our opinions are our own.

  • Travel insurance covers risks like trip cancellations, health emergencies, and lost luggage.
  • Travel insurance costs can range from 4% to 12% of your total trip cost.
  • Travel insurance is best for trips that are long, expensive, nonrefundable, and international.

Vacations can be very expensive. If you're paying a lot for yours, you might wonder if you should purchase travel insurance, especially when some costs are nonrefundable.

The answer isn't always cut-and-dried. Travel insurance isn't necessary for everyone. Whether you need it will depend on a variety of factors. Here are some key points to consider when deciding if travel insurance suits you.

Introduction to travel insurance

When planning a trip, it's essential to think about how you'll protect yourself from the unexpected. That's where travel insurance comes in. It can cover various risks like loss of personal belongings, checked baggage, and more. With the appropriate coverage, you can nullify or mitigate the potential losses. "Plain and simple, travel insurance is a layer of protection against financial loss," says Brad Cummins, owner and principal agent for Insurance Geek , an insurance comparison platform. "Whether it be lost luggage or a lost passport, travel insurance will cover the extra costs during these unfortunate events."

Benefits of travel insurance

Protection against unforeseen cancellation.

One of the top reasons to acquire travel insurance is to cover potential losses from trip cancellations. When canceling a trip due to a covered cause, travel insurance will reimburse you for prepaid, nonrefundable expenses.

Some covered causes for travel cancellations include:

  • Sickness, injury, or death of traveler or family member of traveler
  • Inclement weather
  • Unexpected work or layoffs
  • Terrorist incidents in a travel location

Some travel insurance covers trip cancellations regardless of the reason. However, you make certain trade-offs when you enroll in a  "Cancel for Any Reason" (CFAR) insurance policy . These policies are more expensive and may only refund a percentage of your trip's cost. You can find our guide on the best CFAR travel insurance  here.

Financial security and peace of mind

While your travel insurance covers any unforeseen issues before your trip, it continues to cover you even after your flight has taken off.

For example, you don't have to be as anxious at baggage claim when your fellow passengers have claimed their luggage and yours hasn't come out yet. Travel insurance offers lost luggage protection and can cover any necessary purchases while you wait for your late luggage to arrive, such as toiletries and a change of clothes.

Medical coverage on travel insurance  can also offer peace of mind as most US health insurers don't provide coverage when you're abroad. A comprehensive travel insurance plan will cover you in an unexpected accident or emergency so you can seek medical attention for an injury sustained while traveling without worrying about mounting medical bills.

Evaluating the cost of travel insurance

The average cost of travel insurance is 5%-6% of your total trip cost. However, the exact cost will vary based on factors such as your age, travel destination, and where you live, and can be as little as 4% of your trip cost or as high as 12% of your trip cost.

If you're wondering whether travel insurance is worth it, you're not alone. There are a few things to consider. If an emergency arises on your trip, travel insurance can reimburse part or all of your vacation expenditure. However, this will depend on factors such as your trip type and whether it's refundable.

Cost vs. potential savings

In general, travel insurance is worth it if you're concerned about losing money if your trip is called off or delayed or if you're worried about medical bills while traveling. However, conducting thorough research and understanding the costs and coverage provided is critical before purchasing a policy.

For example, older travelers or those with pre-existing medical conditions may pay more for their insurance. Similarly, those traveling to high-risk destinations or participating in high-risk activities may also face higher premiums.

Ultimately, it's important to shop around and compare quotes from different travel insurance companies to find the best coverage and rate for your needs. You can find our picks for the best travel insurance companies here.

Cost-benefit analysis for different trip types

Travel insurance may be a wise investment if you've already paid for your and can't change or cancel your trip without penalty. Suppose your trip is canceled or disrupted due to a covered cause. In that case, travel insurance will cover the trip's cost and any other nonrefundable expenditures up to a pre-determined amount.

If you're heading to a country where your health coverage doesn't apply, or if you don't have any health insurance at all, travel insurance might provide the protection you need. Travel insurance can also assist you in case of medical emergencies. It's vital to understand that not all travel insurance policies are created equal. Be sure to carefully study the details and understand what is and isn't covered before purchasing one.

Scenarios where travel insurance is essential

Expensive vacations and long-term travel.

It's a good idea to insure trips with a high, nonrefundable price tag because you'll never forgive yourself if your expensive, once-in-a-lifetime trip gets canceled and your money and planning go down the drain. For these vacations, you'll want to find a policy that covers 100% of expenses.

Similarly, if you have long-term travel plans, you'll want to have a policy that protects against travel interruption in case something cuts your plans short. You'll also want medical coverage during extended stay outside the country.

High-risk destinations and activities

High-risk destinations include regions facing political instability, war zones, and areas prone to natural disasters. Travelers headed to these areas should look into travel insurance in case their trip is canceled due to an unforeseen event.

Additionally, certain areas are known for the thrilling activities they offer, like skydiving and bungee jumping. If you have extreme sports on your itinerary or believe you might build up the courage to plunge down a canyon, you may want to invest in a travel insurance policy. Keep in mind that some travel insurance policies don't cover high-risk activities, so shop carefully.

When travel insurance may not be necessary

Low-risk, short, or domestic trips.

There are also some situations in which you might not need travel insurance. If you are traveling within the US, you do not need travel insurance for health reasons since most health insurance plans will cover you even if you're not in your home state.

Additionally, travel insurance may not be necessary if you're only traveling over the weekend or exclusively booked refundable experiences.

Making an informed decision

There are a few key considerations when buying a travel insurance policy. The cost of the policy is one factor, but it's also important to look at the coverage limits and what is included and excluded in the policy. Be sure to read the fine print carefully and compare policies between different companies.

It's also important to consider the purpose of your travel insurance policy. If you're going on a trip where you'll be doing adventurous activities, ensure your policy covers those activities. Finally, remember that travel insurance is there to protect you in case something goes wrong on your trip, so don't hesitate to use it if you need to.

If you decide that you need travel insurance, here are a few things to keep in mind when shopping for a policy:

  • Read the fine print of any policy you are considering to understand what is and is not covered. This is especially important for those who want to add special coverage options.
  • Compare policies from different providers to find the best coverage at the best price.
  • Purchase your policy well in advance of your trip so that you are covered in case of any unforeseen circumstances.
  • Ensure you're covered for pre-existing conditions because a number of policies will exclude pre-existing conditions if you don't pay extra for a waiver or additional coverage.

Buying travel insurance can be a pretty quick and painless process, thanks to insurance aggregator sites like SquareMouth .

Using SquareMouth is one of the easiest ways to see multiple coverage options simultaneously. Once you've entered some personal details and information regarding your trip, you'll see a variety of insurance providers and plans from which to choose.

Assessing personal and trip risks

The first consideration you should factor into travel insurance is how much of your trip is already paid for. If you've prepaid for most or all of your travel expenses, you may want to purchase travel insurance if you have to cancel.

Another thing to consider is where you will be traveling. If you are visiting multiple countries, getting insurance that covers you in all of them might be a good idea.

Your age and overall health can also determine whether you need travel insurance. Suppose you are older or have pre-existing medical conditions, for example. In that case, it might be a good idea to purchase travel insurance if you need to cancel your trip or incur unexpected medical expenses.

Lastly, the value of your luggage can also be a factor to consider. If you plan to bring expensive items with you on your trip, it might be worth purchasing travel insurance to cover lost or stolen luggage.

Reviewing policy options and exclusions

When it comes to travel insurance, the ease of use will depend on the provider you choose. If you're working with a reputable insurer, then the process should be relatively straightforward. However, it's still important to understand what is and isn't included in your policy before you purchase it. This way, you can be sure that you're getting the coverage you need and that you won't be caught off guard by any fine print.

Travel insurance isn't necessary for everyone or every trip. But it can bring a lot of peace of mind during your travels and can certainly translate into significant savings if you're faced with a medical emergency while on your trip. It's best to do your research, compare plans, and understand your own level of risk when it comes to deciding whether or not to purchase coverage.

Travel insurance frequently asked questions

Travel insurance is highly recommended for trips that are long and expensive. For example, you should buy travel insurance for any international trips, cruises, adventure travels, and trips with significant pre-paid expenses.

To say that travel insurance will save you money in the long run isn't entirely accurate. Travel insurance will save you money when things go wrong, but it won't save you any money if your trip goes smoothly.

Short domestic trips don't necessitate travel insurance. Most health insurance policies cover you from state to state, so unless you're worried about unexpected cancellations, travel insurance isn't a must-have.

Travel insurance policies commonly exclude coverage for pre-existing medical conditions, extreme sports injuries, and travel to high-risk countries.

Cost-benefit considerations should include the total cost of your trip, the refundability of your expenses, your destination's healthcare costs, and your personal health and travel risks.

Monzo Premium has a new travel insurance provider

From 3rd July 2023, Monzo Premium’s worldwide family travel insurance will be provided by Zurich, powered by Qover .  Most of the things covered by the insurance will stay the same. As will the excess amount and the price of Monzo Premium.

This blog explains more about the switch, including how Zurich’s own Terms and Conditions and Insurance Product Information Document (IPID) differ from the previous provider.

Monzo Premium claims experience

Why we’re making the switch

Our Premium customers told us that making a travel insurance claim wasn’t always as easy or as fast as it should be. So we decided to switch from our current provider to Zurich, powered by Qover .

By doing so, we can give Premium customers a better claims support experience from the Monzo app.

New provider, smoother experience

You can start a claim and request a travel certificate in the Monzo app. Previously, you had to call the travel insurance provider or use their online claims management portal to do these things.  And in the future, you’ll be able to submit and track a claim in the app too.

Monzo Premium travel certificate

A bit about the new provider

As of 3rd July, the new Monzo Premium travel insurance provider will be Zurich, powered by Qover .

Zurich Insurance Company will underwrite Monzo Premium’s travel insurance policy, meaning they're the ones who actually insure you. They will also arrange emergency help if you need it.

Qover will work with Zurich to deal with the claims you make and provide you with customer care.

Zurich, powered by Qover

Monzo Premium customers are still covered for these things

Most of the things that Premium customers are covered for today will stay the same. This includes:

Worldwide cover

Including the United States.

For you and your family

By “family”, Zurich means partners and dependent children up to 19 years old (or 21 if in full-time education). They’re only covered if they’re travelling with you. Exclusions apply, please read the Ts&Cs.

Multiple trips

You’re covered for an unlimited number of trips if each one is less than 45 consecutive days.

Winter sports

Including skiing and snowboarding, ski equipment and ski hire up to £750.

Travel disruption

Covers cancellation costs up to £5,000, costs for trips being cut short up to £5,000 and flight delays by 4 hours or more.

Car hire excess waiver up to £3,000

If you damage a rental car abroad.

Medical bills up to £10 million

For medical emergencies, including practitioners’ fees, hospital expenses and medical treatment.

Lost valuables up to £750

Including luggage, personal money and travel documents, jewellery, laptops and tablets, and more.

£50 excess

There's a £50 excess for every successful claim where an excess is payable. An excess is the amount of money you pay towards a claim. Limitations and exclusions apply. For full details of what is and isn't covered you can refer to the Terms and Conditions .

Monzo Premium with suitcase travel

New provider, new terms and conditions

The change in provider means that Zurich, powered by Qover will be setting their own exclusions. We’ll also be changing some of the language in the Monzo Premium Terms and Conditions.

If you’re a Premium customer, here's a summary of the things that will be different in your new Zurich policy:

General exclusions now include climbing on roofs and jumping from heights, buildings and rock formations.

You’ll now need receipts for all claims.

Personal liability now excludes intellectual property and copyright, loss or damage to property, and any damages that should be more specifically claimed under another policy.

Hijack now excludes privately chartered or rented vessels.

Winter sports now excludes claims for anything you've left unattended, unless in locked storage or a lockable ski or snowboard rack.

If you’d like to find out more, we recommend you read the Zurich Terms and Conditions in full.

If you’re already a Monzo Premium customer

If you’re a Monzo Premium customer and wondering how the switch will affect your travel insurance cover, here’s what you need to know.

Up to 2nd August 2023, AXA will provide your travel insurance cover then we’ll move you over on 2nd August 2023 and update the ‘your travel insurance’ section of the Monzo Premium Terms and Conditions . There’s nothing for you to sign and no forms to fill in. And there’s still no need to make any medical declarations. Please note, pre-existing medical conditions are not covered.

Rest assured, there’s no period of time when you won’t be covered for eligible claims.

If you have an existing claim with AXA it will continue to be processed by them in line with your current AXA policy Terms and Conditions .

What is covered by trip cancellation and interruption insurance?

joint travel insurance

You can find the full terms and conditions of what is generally covered on your respective card in your Guide to Benefits, which can be found through your online account. I'll use the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve as an example.

Here is a rundown of the "covered losses" provided by Amex's trip cancellation and interruption insurance:

  • Accidental bodily injury or loss of life or sickness of either the eligible traveler, traveling companion or a family member of the eligible traveler or traveling companion
  • Inclement weather, which prevents a reasonable and prudent person from traveling or continuing on a covered trip
  • The eligible traveler or his or her spouse's change in military orders
  • Terrorist action or hijacking
  • Call to jury duty or subpoena by the courts, either of which cannot be postponed or waived
  • The eligible traveler or traveling companion's dwelling made uninhabitable
  • Quarantine imposed by a physician for health reasons

Related: Book carefully if you have multiple Amex cards that offer travel protections

Amex also provides an extensive list of things that are not covered by trip cancellation/interruption insurance:

  • Pre-existing conditions
  • The eligible traveler's suicide, attempted suicide or intentionally self-inflicted injury
  • A declared or undeclared war
  • Mental or emotional disorders, unless hospitalized
  • The eligible traveler's participation in a sporting activity for which he or she receives a salary or prize money
  • The eligible traveler's being intoxicated at the time of an accident. Intoxication is defined by the laws of the jurisdiction where such accident occurs
  • The eligible traveler being under the influence of any narcotic or other controlled substance at the time of an accident, unless the narcotic or other controlled substance is taken and used as prescribed by a Physician
  • The eligible traveler's commission or attempted commission of any illegal or criminal act, including but not limited to any felony
  • The eligible traveler parachuting from an aircraft
  • The eligible traveler engaging or participating in a motorized vehicular race or speed contest
  • Dental treatment except as a result of accidental bodily injury to sound, natural teeth
  • Any non-emergency treatment or surgery, routine physical examinations
  • Hearing aids, eyeglasses or contact lenses
  • One-way travel that does not have a return destination
  • A counterfeit scheduled airline or train ticket; or a scheduled airline or train ticket which is charged to a fraudulently issued or fraudulently used eligible card.
  • Any occurrence while the eligible traveler is incarcerated
  • Loss due to intentional acts by the eligible traveler
  • Financial insolvency of a travel agency, tour operator or travel supplier
  • Any expenses that are not authorized and reimbursable by the eligible traveler's employer if the eligible traveler makes the purchases with a commercial card

If you do find yourself canceling or cutting a covered trip short, here are the basic guidelines provided by Amex on what types of expenses are covered for trip cancellation/interruption:

"If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler's Trip Interruption, we will reimburse you for the nonrefundable amount paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card for the following: 1. The forfeited, non-refundable, pre-paid land, air and sea transportation arrangements that were missed; and 2. Additional transportation expenses that the Eligible Traveler incurs less any available refunds, not to exceed the cost of an economy-class air ticket by the most direct route for the Eligible Traveler to rejoin his or her places of origin.
If a Covered Loss causes an Eligible Traveler to temporarily postpone transportation by Common Carrier for a Covered Trip and a new departure date is set, we will reimburse you for the following: 1. The additional expenses incurred to purchase tickets for the new departure (not to exceed the difference between the original fare and the economy fare for the rescheduled Covered Trip by the most direct route); and 2. The unused, non-refundable land, air, and sea arrangements paid to a Travel Supplier with your Eligible Card."

What is covered by trip delay insurance?

joint travel insurance

Trip delay coverage provides reimbursement for reasonable additional expenses incurred when your trip is delayed due to a covered hazard for more than six hours.

Coverage is limited to $500 per trip and cardmembers are only eligible for two claims each 12 consecutive month period.

Amex outlines what is not covered, which includes the following:

  • Covered losses that are made public or known to the eligible traveler prior to the departure for the covered trip
  • An eligible traveler's expenses paid prior to the covered trip

Filing a claim

When you have a delay or trip cancellation/interruption that you think qualifies for coverage, you can file a claim by calling Amex at 1-844-933-0648 within 60 days of the covered loss.

Trip delay reimbursement requires the following documentation:

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss
  • Receipts - Acceptable documentation includes the following:
  • A statement from the common carrier that the covered trip was delayed
  • Charge receipt
  • Copies of common carrier ticket(s)
  • Receipts for travel expenses

Trip cancellation/interruption insurance requires slightly different documentation.

  • Proof of loss – You must furnish written proof of loss to Amex within 180 days after the date of your loss. Acceptable documentation includes:
  • Court subpoenas, orders to report for active duty, physician orders, etc.
  • Copies of your common carrier tickets and travel supplier receipt
  • Your eligible card billing statement showing the charges for the covered trip
  • Copy of travel supplier's cancelation policy

After Amex receives notice of your claim, instructions will be sent on how to send the proof. Typically, you have up to 180 days to file a claim after a delay or cancellation.

Proof of flight delay or cancellation

One of the documents required to file for trip delay reimbursement is a verification form that outlines the reason for the delay or cancellation by the carrier. You can typically get this at the airport when the delay or cancellation is announced, but keep in mind that it may require a supervisor. Each U.S. major airline also has a process for requesting this information after the fact.

Here is an overview of the process that major U.S. airlines require for you to receive a delay or cancellation verification form:

Amex cards that offer car rental insurance

Unfortunately, no American Express credit cards offer primary car rental coverage, although most offer secondary coverage. You can see the entire list of cards that offer secondary car rental protection on the American Express website . However, all American Express credit cards offer an optional "Premium Car Rental Protection policy" that can be added to rentals made using the card for a small fee.

Read our guide on when to use American Express' Premium Car Rental Protection for more details on this coverage option.

joint travel insurance

You can add Premium Car Rental Protection to any American Express card . TPG has a guide of the best American Express cards , but here are some of the best cards in terms of the return you could receive when renting a car. Note, the estimated return rate for these cards is based on TPG's latest valuations:

  • Hilton Honors American Express Aspire Card: $450 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4.2% return on car rentals booked directly from car rental companies; no foreign transaction fees (see rates and fees)
  • The Blue Business® Plus Credit Card from American Express: $0 annual fee (see rates and fees); 4% return on general spending on the first $50,000 in purchases per calendar year and 1x thereafter; 2.7% foreign transaction fee (see rates and fees)
  • The Amex EveryDay® Preferred Credit Card from American Express: $95 annual fee; 3% return on general spending in billing cycles where you make 30+ purchases; 2.7% foreign transaction fee

Amex cards that offer baggage insurance

joint travel insurance

If you're a frequent traveler, you've likely run into this situation at some point (it's the worst). Over the years, airlines have been working on improving the baggage system by introducing live bag tracking. Regardless, it's still a smart idea to have some protections in place, like baggage insurance.

Related: Everything you need to know about Amex's baggage insurance plan

This is why you need to pay attention to the benefits each of your travel rewards cards offers. Nearly all of Amex's premium rewards cards offer baggage insurance. You can check out the full list of cards and details on American Express's website.

The types of losses it covers: You're covered for losses resulting from damaged, stolen or lost baggage, including both carry-on and checked bags.

When you're covered: To be eligible for coverage, you have to travel on a common carrier, which Amex defines as any air, land or water vehicle (other than a personal or rental vehicle) that is licensed to carry passengers for hire and available to the public. Your rental car, as well as taxis and ride-share services such as Uber and Lyft, would be excluded from this protection.

To receive coverage, you also need to pay for the entire fare with an eligible American Express card or by using Membership Rewards points to book tickets through Amex Travel . Trips booked with miles from other sources — even the cobranded Delta SkyMiles cards from Amex — are excluded. Your trip also isn't covered if you used a combination of miles and dollars unless the miles came from a Membership Rewards transfer. This is a welcome change. A few years ago, a TPG staffer found out the hard way that Amex's policy didn't cover frequent flyer mile awards.

Who's covered: This policy covers both primary and additional cardholders, as well as cardmembers' spouses or domestic partners and any dependent children under 23 years old. In addition, travelers must be permanent residents of one of the 50 states, Washington, D.C., Puerto Rico and the U.S. Virgin Islands.

How much it covers: Most American Express credit cards will cover replacement costs for checked bags and their contents up to $500 per person, although so-called "high-risk items" are only covered for a maximum of $250. These items include jewelry, sporting equipment, photographic or electronic equipment, computers and audio/visual equipment. Carry-on bags are covered for up to $1,250, which is good to know since your belongings could be stolen from the overhead bins.

You'll enjoy additional coverage if you use The Platinum Card from American Express, The Business Platinum Card from American Express, the Platinum Card from American Express Exclusively for Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley-branded Platinum Card (but not the Delta SkyMiles® Platinum American Express Card).

The information for the Amex Platinum Mercedes-Benz and Morgan Stanley Platinum card has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Amex cards that offer medical assistance

joint travel insurance

One of the lesser known benefits of some of Amex's most premium cards is its Premium Global Assistance. This benefit can quite literally be a lifesaver if you or an immediate family member run into any unexpected issues or accident on your trip. For example, this service can help you arrange emergency medical referrals.

All Amex cards have access to Amex's Global Assist Hotline, but the Premium Global Assist Hotline and higher level of coverage are reserved exclusively for the Amex's premium cards:

  • The Platinum Card from American Express
  • The Business Platinum Card from American Express
  • American Express Corporate Platinum Card
  • Hilton Honors Aspire Card from American Express
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card
  • Delta SkyMiles® Reserve Business American Express Card
  • Marriott Bonvoy Brilliant® American Express® Card
  • American Express Centurion Card
  • American Express Business Centurion Card

The information for the Amex Centurion and Amex Business Centurion cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Bottom line

Having a card with trip insurance can save you hundreds of dollars when unexpected hiccups happen in your travel plans. Still, it can be confusing to know what is covered and the right documentation you need to file a claim.

Nothing is worse than getting through an entire claims process only to be denied or have to start over because you don't have the required documentation for the insurance provider. Before you start filing a claim, make sure you have the documents listed above. Keep in mind that a provider may ask for additional documentation related to the incident, so you may have to collect receipts and other forms to help your case.

If you're starting to travel again, it's also a good idea to consider booking refundable travel . Some airlines and hotels even waive cancelation fees and/or change fees for certain fares, which can make last-minute adjustments in the case of emergencies.

Valentine's Day & Insurance: Protecting the Ones We Love

T his Valentine’s Day, let acts of service be your love language by taking practical steps to insure your loved one’s health, belongings and future. While insurance-related gifts might not be the most flashy, the security and peace of mind they bring can still be a romantic gesture.

Keep reading to learn more about insuring gifts of jewelry , travel insurance if you’re embarking on a romantic getaway and other insurance ideas for Valentine’s Day.

5 Insurance Moves You Should Make on Valentine’s Day

Insurance isn’t the most romantic gift, we get it. However, financial responsibility and future planning can be two pillars among many others that can prop up a strong relationship. Below are a few insurance-related moves you might want to make this Valentine’s Day.

1. Insure Your Jewelry and Other Valuables

While your insurance company will usually insure jewelry, watches and other gifts you might exchange on Valentine’s Day, the coverage is usually limited. For example, if you have $100,000 in personal property coverage , your homeowners or renters insurance company may cover a ring for only up to $1,500 despite it having cost $5,000. [1]

To fully insure the value of your Valentine’s Day gifts, you will need to buy scheduled property coverage and add it to your policy. That way, you can receive a full payout in case your gift is stolen or otherwise lost due to a covered insurance peril . [1]

2. Review Your Insurance Policies Together

Major life events in a relationship such as moving in together, buying a new home , having a child or starting a new job can change your insurance needs . For example, if you already own your home and your significant other is moving in with you, you may want to increase your personal property coverage limits to ensure you have coverage for both of your belongings.

These changes can increase your premium and is why they are generally good times to shop around for a new policy.

Children are another factor that can alter coverage. For example, if your teenage child just got their driver’s license, you may learn that your auto insurance rate can go up considerably due to their driving inexperience increasing the chances of them getting into a car accident. While adding a teenage driver to your policy will almost certainly cause your rates to go up, shopping around can help you find a policy with a manageable rate hike.

In addition, couples should discuss the beneficiaries of their life insurance policies to ensure they are up to date. For example, if you remarried and your ex-spouse was the listed beneficiary in your life insurance policy, you may want to update that to your new spouse.

3. Consider Travel Insurance

If you and your significant other are going on a romantic vacation for Valentine’s Day, you may want to look into travel insurance. Travel insurance is a way for travelers to protect against the unexpected costs and challenges that can arise during a trip. It typically includes coverage for trip cancellations or interruptions, lost or stolen luggage, medical emergencies and sometimes travel delays. If your trip is suddenly canceled for any of these reasons, you can recoup some of the expenses paid toward this trip.

4. Consolidate Your Health Plans

Consolidating health insurance this Valentine’s Day is a strategic move that couples should consider. This involves evaluating whether it's more beneficial for both partners to be on the same health insurance plan rather than maintaining separate policies. Couples should compare their individual health plans to determine which offers better benefitsand more comprehensive coverage. Factors like network of doctors, prescription drug coverage and plan type should be considered.

This consolidation can often lead to reduced overall costs and simpler management of health benefits. However, it's crucial to weigh the pros and cons, as consolidating isn’t always the most cost-effective choice for every couple. In fact, you may stand to have lower out-of-pocket costs overall with two healthcare plans (dual coverage) if you’re on each other's plans. [2]

Keep in mind, though, that you may only be allowed to join your spouse’s employer-sponsored health plan during their workplace’s open enrollment period.

5. Look Into Joint Life Insurance

This Valentine’s Day, take time to consider your future by looking into purchasing a joint life insurance policy. While less common, joint life insurance can be a cheaper alternative to buying two life insurance policies separately if it fits you and your partner’s needs. [3]

Joint life insurance typically comes in two forms: first-to-die and second-to-die. First-to-die life insurance pays a death benefit to the surviving spouse if one dies, while second-to-die life insurance only pays out if both spouses die, with the death benefit going to a listed beneficiary such as a child.

Can You Save Money on Insurance on Valentine’s Day?

Insurance companies generally do not offer discounts specific to Valentine’s Day, although you should ask your insurance company if they offer a discount if you’re married. Some car insurance companies offer a discount to married persons because those who are married are perceived to be of lower risk than those who are single. [4]

While you’re at it, you should ask all of your insurance carriers about other available discounts. For example, your home insurance company may offer a discount for installing smart home devices and your auto insurance carrier may reduce your rate if you complete a defensive driver course. If you and your significant other have a child who is also a listed driver on your auto policy, you may even get a discount if they maintain good grades.

Can you gift someone life insurance?

Yes, it is possible to buy life insurance for somebody else with their consent. [3] Alternatively, you can buy life insurance yourself and list your significant other as the beneficiary of your death benefit.

Should you review your insurance policies regularly?

Yes, you should review your insurance policies regularly. This ensures that your coverage continues to meet your changing needs and circumstances and may also help identify potential savings or necessary updates to your policy.

Do insurance carriers provide discounts on Valentine’s Day?

Insurance companies generally do not offer discounts on insurance policies, although some companies like AAA may have partnerships with companies and may be able to offer Valentine’s Day discounts on flowers, chocolates, wines and more. [4]
