Unveiling WegoPro: The future of business travel

Kohinoor Sahota - Deputy Editor

WegoPro launches in Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE.

The online travel marketplace, Wego, has unveiled WegoPro. The new platform aims to transform business travel, and has launched in seven markets: Egypt, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, Qatar and UAE. FACT joined the launch at Atlantis The Royal in Dubai, and here’s what we found.

WegoPro aims to simplify the process of booking business travel. The platform offers flights and hotel inventories. With the use of AI-driven personalisation, it hopes to reduce the time business travellers spend researching and booking their trips. The platform also provides unlimited travel policies, and comprehensive expense reporting.

Ross Veitch, Wego CEO & Co-Founder, explained: “The Middle East is a very young population and most people in the workforce today have grown up with powerful travel apps and websites. In stark contrast in their professional lives, they are often forced to book their business trips through cumbersome offline booking processes and then to go through a tedious approval process.

“After the trip expense reports then need to be filed in a process normally involving Excel, receipts and sticky tape. With the launch of WegoPro today we are leveraging technology and our deep experience in the B2C space to bring business travel and expense management into the 21st century.”

Prashant Kirtane, WegoPro CEO, added: “WegoPro is all about making business travel and managing expenses easy and efficient. We’ve combined top-notch supply from Wego, advanced technology, user-friendly design, and real human support to create a platform that suits the needs of businesses in the MENA region.”

Intense rainfall sweeps across Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates, disrupting flights

Heavy rains have swept across Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates, causing localised flooding and hail in parts of the country. (AP video: Jon Gambrell)

DUBAI, United Arab Emirates (AP) — Intense rainfall swept across Dubai and the wider United Arab Emirates on Saturday, causing localized flooding and disrupting flights at the world’s busiest airport for international travel.

Nearly 50 millimeters (2 inches) of rain fell in Dubai over six hours — a heavy amount when the country as a whole averages under 120 millimeters (4.7 inches) of precipitation a year. Authorities sent crews out to collect downed tree limbs and open up drainage grates, though the rain quickly overwhelmed some areas.

Dubai police shut down portions of one major highway as traffic slowly crept through standing water on others. Rare lightning storms also lit up the afternoon sky.

At Dubai International Airport, the busiest for international travel, flights for both long-haul carrier Emirates and its low-cost sister airline, FlyDubai, were disrupted in the downpour.

Authorities had warned the public about the coming storm over a day in advance, with emergency personnel preparing for the rare rain.

Rain is unusual in this arid, Arabian Peninsula nation, but occurs periodically during the cooler winter months.

WeGO's new offices in UAE, Kazakhstan, Ecuador to share Korea's smart city technologies

International association of municipal governments to hold 2024 kick-off event Tuesday

The World Smart Sustainable Cities Organization (WeGO) has opened three new regional offices in Abu Dhabi of the United Arab Emirates, Almaty of Kazakhstan and Cuenca of Ecuador to propel global smart city cooperation initiatives.

The organization will introduce achievements and goals of these new regional offices during its annual conference to be held at the Seoul Global Center on Tuesday.

Dubbed the "2024 Activities Kick-off Event," the event will showcase WeGO’s key programs and goals this year under the theme of "Smart Life in Smart City."

The Seoul-based international association was launched by the Seoul Metropolitan Government in 2010 with 50 member cities to promote innovative and inclusive smart city models. Currently, it has regional offices in Chengdu in China, Beyoglu in Turkey and Abuja in Nigeria.

The annual event will bring together some 100 representatives from member cities, corporations, local governments, diplomatic missions, academics and specialists in Seoul, where they will exchange ideas on city-to-city diplomacy and seek cooperation in smart city development.

The conference aims to strengthen partnerships between Seoul and other global cities on green and sustainable energy infrastructure as well as fostering human-centered sustainable growth.

Last year, the organization launched the Seoul Smart City Prize to recognize ongoing and planned smart city projects that address the digital divide and prioritize the needs of the socially vulnerable.

WeGO said its new award and other initiatives will continue to foster innovative and inclusive smart city models to ensure a smarter and more sustainable way of living.

In addition, the organization will hold its executive committee meeting in Almaty.

Known as the largest city in Kazakhstan and an economic powerhouse to the Central Asian region, the city with a population of over 2 million is a strategic hub for international business and travel transportation connecting Asia and Europe, according to the group.
