A Pleasant Trip To Nainital – A Hill Station Photo credit: puravida from morguefile.com

We already visited Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan under the scorching sun of the summer season. My wards were quite aware of our next destination – Nainital – one of the most beautiful hill stations of India where weather was fine and climate was “ Thanda – Thanda , Cool – Cool. ” We were so excited that we wanted to fly over there within a few minutes, we didn’t have patience to wait and stare. Secondly we were extremely tired of exertion that we had had during the period of our visit to Agra, Mathura and Vrindavan – so warm, so tiring !

We reached Mathura Cant Station at 9 PM. We were very fortunate that it was drizzling unexpectedly – “Bin Mousam Barsat .” We had no umbrella with us. We came under the shed. We got the reservation in the first class bogie in the superfast passenger train – Agra to Kathgodam.

The train arrived in time and we got into the compartment. We arranged all our luggage and occupied our seats. The TTE came and sat beside us. We introduced ourselves. He was very pleased to see us on tour to Nainital. He said he hailed from Bihar but settled there. He gave us some important tips while visiting Nainital. He advised to get down at Haldwani in stead of Kathgodam as it would be cheaper. I still remember his name, he is Mr. Rambalak Singh Yadav. So gentle , so sober – a gentle man of helping attitude… ? He guided in a nice way, we could have been cautious and could have saved money by following his guidance.

Early in the morning we got down at Haldwani Station and from there we came to Nainital by Maruti Van. We stayed in a hotel just up the main road. The rent was a little bit higher. We thought of changing after one day stay. But Bablu said, “ Papa! We will stay here, wouldn’t go anywhere. The other boys suported him. I introduced the owner of the hotel that I was a member of lions club of Gobindpur, Dhanbad, District 322A. He said he was also a member of lions club of Nainital.

How many days will you stay? Only two days. Stay at least for five days. Your hotel charge we cannot afford for five days. Just pay me fifty par cent, fifty par cent discount for you. Any problem, tell me.

He asked the manager to guide us and arrange taxies on reasonable fare wherever we wanted to go. It was a great relief for us. My wards were very happy and desired to stay for a week then.

Nainital is considered as one of the most beautiful hill stations of India. It is situated in the Indian state of Uttarakhand, head quarter of the district, the summer capital of the Governer at 8580 ft. above the sea level. It was founded and constructed in 1841 during the British regime. AS such tourism is the most significant segment of the Nainital economy. During Summer Vacation parents with their families preferred to visit this place and enjoy with their children. Some foreigners liked to visit in winter seasons to enjoy snow falls.

Where and how we visited and enjoyed the worth seeing places in Nainital is depicted here under: 1: Nainital Lake- The climate was very cool. We had warm clothes with us. After taking lunch we came out of the room and decided to enjoy boating in the Nainital Lake. It was just in front of our eyes. It is also known as Naini Lake situated in the heart of the city. We enjoyed the beautiful and scenic views of the surroundings all around the lake. The northern end is connected with that of the southern end with a bridge. As the weather was very cool and the sunrays were soothing, we spent a few ours in the boat going all around of it. My youngest son was so adamant that he didn’t want to boat with anyone but with his mother only.

2: Naini Devi Temple: It was situated just on the northern shore of the Nainital Lake. Next day on 30th may we were ready by 8 in the morning and went direct to do darshan and pujan of Goddess Naini. We offered Prasad with beautiful red flowers only and prayed for peace, happiness and prosperity in life. Nainital is believed to be one of the 64 Shaktipeeths of India where one of the body parts of Goddess Sati fell down when Lord Shiva carried her body on his shoulders. In Nanital the eyes (Naina) of Sati are believed to have fallen here in Nainital and since then the temple is known as Naini Devi Temple. Naini Devi are the deities of Mata Kali and Lord Ganesha.

3: Sat Tal, Tin Tal and Bhil Tal: The manager of the hotel said us that it would take whole day to visit Sat Tal, Tin Tal and Bhim Tal as these were far away from there down in the tarai areas. An ambassador car was hired for the whole day. We left early in the morning at about eight after bath and breakfast. The road was pucca but zigzag, every five and ten minutes there were turning points written so many warning slogans. We reached Sat Tal. We got down at the shore. We found a series of very beautiful lakes one after another. All around the lakes we stared at the greenery covered with the green plants and trees of different kinds and sizes in length. We touched the water of the Tal and it was as cold as ice. So clean that we cannot describe in words. The cold wave was blowing and the children were shivering . Some tea stalls were at the shore. Some people were selling breakfast and serving lunch.

Simla Mirch, tomatoes and cauliflowers were produced here in the Tarai Areas and the farmers earn money from sale proceeds. We were feeling hungry. We ordered for fried rice, dal fried and gobi – aloo, matar panir sabji and salad. “Very tasteful dishes” – my eldest son said. Really meal was warm readily prepared and served nicely. In the way to return we stopped for a few minutes. Our legs were jammed in sitting in the seats for a long time.

I had with me some toffees and balloons to distribute among the village children. We went to nearby houses. We were happy to meet the people and loved their children – so innocent and simple like lambs, gave them the toffees and balloons. My wife and my daughter went inside the house and talked to the ladies. They served us very tasteful tea. Our children mixed with their children and talked and played with them. We enjoyed their association. We were given a packet of green vegetables by them. I asked the driver to make a round with the children. The driver was very obedient as we treated him as our family members wherever we went and whatever we ate and drank. We came back at about 6 PM. Here in Nainital the Sun rises very late and sets very late. The reason is best known to everybody. I thanked the driver for his good drive and good behavior. I patted his shoulder and paid him Rs.200 extra for sweets for his children. As we were very tired, we didn’t go anywhere but the children went out for shopping in the nearby open market. By that time the owner of the hotel came. I met him in person and thanked him for his co-operation in guiding us. I said to him, “ We will stay further for two/three days only. We may leave on 3rd. June. Why so soon? Stay at least for a week, any problem? No. We are very comfortable and the children are happier than us in living in your hotel so near to everywhere, so beautiful scene and scenery all around us.

4: Ropeway: My wards had noticed the ropeway going and coming up and down – ascending and descending. I also felt its charming scene from a distant place. Early in the morning when bed tea was being served by the waiter, I gave them the packet of green vegetables and asked to prepare Aloo-Parotha and Aloo-Gobi, and Tomatto Chatni by 9 AM. We had planned to enjoy travelling by the Ropeway. We took our lunch as scheduled in time and came out of the hotel at 9.30 sharp. We reached Millital from where aerial ropeway starts. We bought tickets from the ticket counter and sat for our turn.

Nainital is very popular for its nice ropeway. Ropeway is the main attraction of the tourists and pilgrims. There are only two trolleys and their carrying capacity is 11 passengers each at a time. Travel time is from 10AM to 4PM. The thrilling matter is its steep ascending and descending while going up and coming down. We enjoyed the panoramic views of the Naini Lake from the above and also a bird’s eye view of the flats/houses/buildings while descending. It took about ten minutes in going up and coming back down to the starting station. The boys and the girl sat still for a few minutes in watching the Ropeway going up with the passengers and coming back down. Really it was an amazing experience in watching it from a distant place going up and coming down – so quickly – so fast.

5: Hanuman Gadhi – Shri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir: As usual we got up early in the morning and didn’t wait for tea as we asked the waiter not to serve bed tea. We were ready after bath and hired a taxi for hanuman Gadhi. We had to walk on foot also. As soon as we reached, we noticed a few devotees in front of Sri Sankat Mochan Hanuman Mandir. This place is situated at a higher level than that of Nainital city. We stood in queue with Prasad and yellow flowers in hands. We did darshan and Pujan of Hanuman Ji and prayed for peace, happiness and prosperity in family. We came out of the temple and rested on the chaubtara built around a tree. We were surprised to see different sizes and types of bells hanging with the branches of a tree near the temple. The pilgrims and tourist come to this place and pray for fulfilling their desire and when it is fulfilled they tie up bells to the branches of the tree. It is a tradition and the people believe in so. The children went up the hill, we also (Wife and husband) followed them. The clouds were flying from one side to another touching our bodies. We touched the clouds with our hands and experienced a unique type of thrills. The weather was cold. All of us were wearing warm clothes. The Sunrays were very soothing to our body and mind. The children had a bunch of balloons in their hands and holding very tightly so that they couldn’t be swept away from their holds.

My youngest son couldn’t hold them fast and as such they were swept away far – far away in the valleys. He was crying, for he lost the bunch of balloons. I took him in my lap and handed over to his mother. We returned in the evening at four.

6. Top Peak of Nainital: It was very steep ascend and descend route to one of the top peak of Nainital. We had never seen such a steep road with big boulders everywhere. We talked to the horseman about our journey on horse backs. They assured our safe riding on the horse backs under their supervision and guidance. We also noticed some tourists on horse backs. Our courage was multiplied to see them. The road was not pucca, somewhere quite muddy. The horses were stepping up very carefully with minimum speed. Slowly and slowly we reached the destination. First of all we came near a safe place. We looked at below the beauty of the tri-mountains in a cylindrical state. At the bottom the narrowest area and at the top the widest ones. The most exciting thing we came to know that the voice or sound we made as loudly as we could do towards the valleys, it was echoing in the same manner after a few seconds. I called loudly Rama, it returned echoing Rama in the same fashion. The children enjoyed it calling their names again and again. My sons and daughter reached the top of the hill by crawling on hands and feet slowly and slowly. Very calm and quit site we have found here. All the hills were covered with green plants and trees. We had never seen such a wonderful place anywhere in life. We stayed there for a few hours on the lap of nature and came back by horse backs. We were relieved of tension as soon as we got down from the backs of the horses. We thanked the horsemen for their careful and safe guide. I paid their wages with respect. We came back to hotel. We were so tired that we didn’t come out. We took tea and biscuits and lied flat on the beds for rest. Our next destination was Dehradun. We reserved an ambassador car from “Nainital To Dehradun” and paid advance to the driver. He said to us to be ready by 6 in the morning next day.

Misfit Wanderers

To the City of Lakes: Nainital. An Unforgettable Journey!

Spectacular mountain range, covered with snow and dark greenery

What can be better than a road trip to a spectacular nature’s abode with your friends? Christmas of 2017 was around the corner and our trip to Nainital was a cherry on the cake. Positive vibes were all around and I was deluged by the serenity of nature when I stood there.

Reaching Nainital from Lucknow

On 23rd December , we started our odyssey from Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh . Penetrating through dense foggy roads, warmed by the hot cup of teas at several Dhabas, and gazing at the flower gardens on the way, we reached at our destination after 11-12 hours of travel. Furthermore, the journey was with the car which made it even more exciting. Most noteworthy we left at 11 pm from Lucknow.

Mesmerizing portrait view of Naini Lake.

Unexpected happiness, blended in the air of Nainital

There were no bookings of hotels, no itineraries set ― everything was to be set as unexpected and thought to be of the moment. After all, isn’t it the unexpected things that bring happiness?

It’s on the 24th of December now. Afore setting up the expedition, we parked our car at a public parking lot near Naini lake for 100 INR per day. We trekked to the upper hills to gather some scenic environment and peace.

Nature was so intimately blended there that it made our jaws drop. Therefore, roaming here and there with nothing particular in mind and clicking lots of poses with #MountainsCalling gave a meaningful experience. In the end, we booked up a cheap hotel near Mall Road and slept for the remaining day.

Jingles Bells ringing in Nainital’s land

The next day , it was Christmas and a fresh day for us. We decided to get lost in nature and do boating in Naini lake. The vibes of Christmas could be felt in the air and all the churches nearby were decorated like a bride.

Next, being done with the boating, in a lake surrounded by mountain ranges, we ended our day by reciting prayers in a church nearby. At night, we boozed ourselves over the heart to heart talks about life. Christmas was well spent, indeed.

Aloo parantha and kullhad wali chai being served near the Naini Lake

Paranthas and then Mukteshwar

On 26th’s morning , starting it with hot aloo ‘ paranthas ’ (a stuffed chapati with aloo or veggies alike), served over ‘ Kullhad Wali Chai ’ (tea served inside a clay utensil) and spectacular views of Naini lake we dipped our minds with ‘where’s next?’

Consequently, we rented two bikes to reach to Mukteshwar, a town in the Kumaon Hills situated 51kms from Nainital. Hence, again a road trip, but this time on two wheels.

Besides all through the way to reach Mukteshwar, we were constantly amazed by the beauties of mountains and lush greenery. We stopped a gazillion times on our way just to stare the beauties for long enough.

In addition, being departed at 9 am from Nainital, we reached Mukteshwar at 12 pm. Visiting the famous Mukteshwar Dham Temple and deepening ourselves with nature’s greatness our consciousness of life was stirred. It felt like heaven.

The place also presented us with a strange fruit which we’d never eaten: Malta or Blood Orange. In contrast, it tasted good. We returned to our hotel by 4 pm . Furthermore, our day ended with some shopping at Mall Road and getting a bit tipsy in the night.

Biking on the way to Mukteshwar from Nainital with splendid views of nature aside.

To the adventure hub of Nainital – Bhimtal

Furthermore, the next day, we checked out from the hotel (around 9:30 am) and returned down the hills to pick our car. The next target acquired was Bhimtal, an adventure hub of Nainital.

Kayaking in Bhimtal lake with a pose like 'we're Sparta'

Finally, we took our car and set the maps’ destination to Bhimtal. It took around 1 hour to reach there. Bhimtal is a small town in Nainital situated around 21km from the center . We almost soaked ourselves in the mesmerizing beauty of the lakeside views to the point where we felt nothing.

We did kayaking for the very first time, in Bhimtal lake. Although the kayaking was furious, it was every worth.

Back to where we belong

At last, after 1 pm we left again for the city of Nawabs – that is Lucknow .

In the end, we realized that it was an unforgettable journey for us, covered with lots of fun, booze and obviously the remarkable beauty of mother nature. Our hearts were again filled with lots of heavy feelings and a ton of memories to cherish with.

It’s another level of finding oneself by getting lost in nature. We know this now after visiting the city of lakes, Nainital.

Nainital in Uttarakhand: Essential Travel Guide

Plan Your Trip to Uttarakhand's "City of Lakes"

nainital trip story

The hill station of Nainital was a popular summer retreat for the British during the time they ruled India. It was discovered in 1841 by British businessman Peter Barren. These days, tourists from Delhi flock there to escape the summer heat. The town is actually made up of two areas, Tallital and Mallital, which are on either end of the lake and connected by The Mall. Mallital, at the top, is the older colonial part of town. The Mall, an action-filled strip that borders Naini Lake on the east side, is lined with restaurants, shops, hotels, and markets.

Nainital is 310 kilometers (193 miles) northeast of Delhi, in the Kumaon region of Uttarakhand (previously known as Uttaranchal).

How to Get There

The nearest airport is at Pantnagar, about two hours away away. Air India flies there daily from Delhi. Tickets costs about 5,000 rupees one way.

The nearest train station is at Kathgodam, about an hour away. If you'd prefer to travel overnight, you can take the 15013 Ranikhet Express from Delhi. It departs daily from Old Delhi Junction at 10.05 p.m. and arrives at 5.05 a.m. Otherwise, the  12040 Kathgodam Shatabdi Express is a good option. It departs Delhi at 6 a.m. and reaches Kathgodam at 11.40 a.m.

Alternatively, Nainital is well connected with other parts of India by road and buses frequently run. It takes about eight hours to drive from Delhi to Nainital.

Weather-wise, the best months to visit Nainital are from March to June and from September to November. The area experiences heavy rainfall during the monsoon in July and August , and landslides do happen. Winters, from November to February, are very cold. Sometimes it snows in December and January. If you want peace, avoid peak season from May to mid-July, and Diwali festival in October or November.  Indian holiday makers converge on the place in droves and hotel prices skyrocket. Nainital is extremely crowded during these months, resulting in traffic jams and chaos.

You can walk all the way around Naini Lake in about an hour. There are quite a few Hindu temples on the west side of the lake, including one dedicated to Naina Devi. Naini Lake is said to be a manifestation of the emerald green left eye of Lord Shiva's wife, Sati. According to Hindu mythology, her eye fell to the spot while Lord Shiva was carrying the charred remains of her body. She immolated herself because her father didn't approve of her marriage to him.

Boating on the lake is an iconic thing to do in Nainital. Peddle boats, row boats, and small yachts are all available for hire.

If you have kids, they'll enjoy visiting the spacious and well laid-out Govind Ballabh Pant Zoo , which has some wonderfully exotic high-altitude species. Get there by taxi, shuttle bus from India Hotel, or a steep 20 minute walk from the bottom end of The Mall. The zoo is closed Mondays and national holidays. Tickets for Indian adults cost 100 rupees, and children 50 rupees. Foreigners pay 200 rupees for adults and 100 rupees for children.

For panoramic mountain vistas, take the cable car/aerial tramway up to Snow View. It departs from the top end of Mall Road (the lane behind Sakley's Restaurant and Pastry Shop leads to the ticket counter). Tickets cost 230 rupees for adults and 120 rupees for adults, for a round trip. Try and get there before 9 a.m. to avoid long lines. There's a small amusement park at the top, plus the usual snack and souvenir stalls. If you're feeling energetic, it's possible to hike to nearby viewpoints from Snow View. Local guides are available.

The hike up to Dorothy’s Seat picnic spot at rocky Tiffin Top, west of the lake, is also popular. From there, you can continue 45 minutes onward through the forest to Land's End. Alternatively, horse rides to these places are offered just west of town on the road to Ramnagar.

Nainital-based Snout Adventures conducts trekking further afield, while the Nainital Mountaineering Club runs rock climbing courses and expeditions for adventure enthusiasts.

To see a memorable sunset, head to Hanuman Garhi temple south of town.

Those who are interested in British-era architecture should go on a tour of Raj Bhawan (Governors House), an immense Victorian Gothic-style building designed to resemble a Scottish castle. The tours depart every hour, with the first one starting at 11 a.m.

The town's market, Bara Bazaar, is the best place to pick up some souvenirs including locally-made candles. Check out Mehrotras House of Wax, the oldest candle shop there. The Pahari Store , which stocks products handmade in the hills, is another fabulous place to shop.

Where to Stay

Nainital has some delightful heritage hotels in the vicinity of the lake. These include the luxurious Naini Retreat (the former summer residence of the Maharaja of Pilibhit), the  Palace Belvedere (which belonged to the erstwhile rajas of Awagarh), Balrampur House , the Grand Hotel on The Mall, the Pavilion Hotel , and Emily Lodge and Cafe .

If you'd prefer a boutique heritage homestay, Abbotsford is recommended.

Shervani Hilltop is a popular luxury choice that's quietly nestled into the hills above town.

Conveniently situated lakeside on The Mall, Hotel Alka has a wide range of colonial-style rooms (including a family apartment) from about 4,500 rupees per night. Hotel ChanniRaja and the Classic Hotel are also good options on The Mall.

Hotel Himalaya , near the bus stand in Tallital, provides decent budget accommodations.

Where to Eat

Most of Nainital's restaurants are located on The Mall. Popular ones include Sakley's Restaurant and Pastry Shop for global cuisine, Zooby's Kitchen for North Indian food, Chandani Chowk for mouthwatering jalebi s and Indian snacks, and Pot & Stones Cafe for Continental cuisine and coffee.

Quaint Cafe Cicha , at the Abbotsford Heritage Homestay, has a relaxing garden setting and serves delicious Continental fare. Weekend cooking classes are conducted there.

For an atmospheric drink, try Stella Bar at the Naini Hotel or the Boat House Club (you'll need to pay for a temporary membership).

Nainital is an excellent base for exploring the lakes and other hill towns in the area. You'll find plenty of tour operators in The Mall who offer excursions. A half-day tour to nearby lakes such as Sat Tal, Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal is a popular option. The forested areas of Kilbury, Vinayak and Kunjakharak are an ideal option for nature lovers. The Pangot and Kilbury Bird Sanctuary is renowned for its many species of birds.

In addition, it’s possible to visit Corbett National Park on a side trip from Nainital.

Trip to Nainital - A complete travel Guide

" Mountains are the beginning and the end of all-natural scenery".

Dreaming, discovering, exploring, living the moment, and creating the memorable flashes of your life - Here we are with  A Complete travel guide for The Trip to Nainital . I am going to share our experiences along with the guidelines for your trip to Nainital.

This  tour to  Nainital ,  the sparkling jewel-like necklace around the Himalayan, the  Lake District  of India,  and the  most popular hill station in North India  will definitely add adventure and memorable memories to your traveling folder.

About Nainital

Nainital is located in the northern state of Uttarakhand in the Kumaon region. This exceedingly known and beautiful hill station is settled at the foot of the outer Himalayas.

Nainital is about 7000 feet in height from sea level, surrounded by mountains from all sides, giving incredible viewpoints and scenic beauty.

Situated at the center of Nainital, there is a Naini lake covering a circumference of around 3 km, which is the perfect and awesome place for relaxing and replenishing yourself. Naini Peak is the popular trekking spot and also is the highest peak in Nainital. The name of the place " Nainital " comes from t he word Naini  from Naini Lake where  Tal means lake.

The superb natural beauty and the   pleasant climatic surrounding will refuel you from the hustles of daily life. It's very well said that the more frequent you plan a trip, the least stressful your life is and this is proven that the trip lovers are happier and energetic than those who don't plan at all.

Now let's move on to our trip to Nainital, but before that let me share a mythological story behind the name " Nainital ", it is also believed that when Lord Shiva carried the body of Goddess Parvati, her eyes fell in this place, eye as Nain , and Tal means Lake hence named the place as Naini-Tal .

What is the best time to visit Nainital?

Nainital is the full year destination place. Actually, there is no ideal time to visit this place, it totally depends on what season you like and what you want to do here. You wanna experience snow or enjoy rafting or you want to cover everything on a really low budget. Following are the highlights season-wise:

October to February : This is the most loved season of the year. This is the beginning of winters with chilled nights. From November, winter starts to reach its peak, dipping the temperature to zero degrees celsius. You will find the misty charming beauty all around. If you don't want to miss the snow, plan your trip for December and January.

March to June : These are the summer months and are great for sightseeing. This is the time to enjoy water rides. The afternoons may be hot so plan the boating after 4PM.

July to September : This is the rainy season and you can expect heavy rainfall, which may cause road blockages. This season is considered as the off-season time for the visitors, so you may get special off and discounts in hotels and everywhere.

What are Covid-19 travel guidelines?

Now ever since COVID, there are certain guidelines to be followed to visit Uttarakhand:

1. It is mandatory to carry RT-PCR negative report, with you. And it should be from ICMR labs done within 72 hours.

Nainital Tour Itinerary: A 7-Day Adventure In The Serene Hill Station

by middha on April 27, 2023

Make your Nainital tour worthwhile by going through our pre-planned itinerary of seven days. Ideally, this is what your Nainital Tour Package must look like, but a little shuffling is completely fine. However, make sure you cover all these locations and activities to get the full essence of the renowned hill station in Uttarakhand , known for its lakes, dense forests, and natural beauty.

Day 1: Arrival and Local Sightseeing during Nainital tour

Check into your Treebo hotel after arriving for your Nainital tour, and take a moment to breathe its pristine air as you freshen up to experience the beauty of this hill station. Take it easy on yourself on the first day, since you’ve traveled for a long time, and visit the local spots for your Nainital sightseeing journey. The Naina Devi Temple on the northern shore of the Naini Lake should ideally be the first place you visit. The ancient temple is surrounded by lush greenery and stunning views.

Sightseeing at Nainital

Next is Mall Road, a bustling destination that combines both traditional and modern experiences through its exquisite shops and restaurants. End your first day with a peaceful ride in the Naini Lake as you bask in the sunset and row on the tranquil lake. If you’re lucky, you might see the migratory birds decorating the skyline. Now, head back to your Treebo hotel and get some rest as you prepare for the upcoming days of exploring and getting the most out of your ideal Nainital Tour Package.

Day 2: Trek to Tiffin Top

Start your day early and head for a trek to get a glorious view from the Tiffin Top, a scenic viewpoint nestled in mountains that take around 2-3 hours to complete. Book a taxi or walk to the starting point, i.e., Ayarpatta Hill, and make sure you’re wearing comfortable shoes, and carrying enough water, along with some energizing snacks. Also, take litter bags with you to avoid throwing any waste around, like a responsible citizen.

Spectacular View of Nainital during the Nainital tour

The trek leans more toward the moderately difficult side, but the spectacular view at the top is worth all the huffing and puffing. Plan a nice breakfast with your loved ones on the mountaintop and head back to your hotel, either by trekking or on a horse ride. Lastly, go out to enjoy some local delicacies and treat yourself after a long day of hard work.

Day 3: Visit Bhimtal and Naukuchiatal

Bhimtal and Sattal should be in every Nainital Tour Package, as they are two gorgeous lakes located near the hill station, surrounded by mountains and dense forests. Enjoy a boat ride in the Bhimtal Lake, which is named after the mythological character of Bhima and is considered to be one of the few natural lakes in the region. A temple dedicated to Lord Shiva, named Bhimeshwara Mahadev Temple, stands proud on the banks of this lake and is said to be around 700 years old.

Nainital

After visiting the temple, head to Sattal, which is a cluster of seven interconnected freshwater lakes, and a perfect spot for birdwatching, nature walks, or picnic. In the evening, spice up your Nainital tour by exploring the Tibetan Market and shopping for souvenirs, handicrafts, woolen clothes, jewelry, and more. You can also try out some of their traditional cuisines that, include momos and thupka. End your day with a bonfire and some live local music at your Treebo hotel .

Day 4: Visit Naini Peak and Snow View

Your fourth day of Nainital sightseeing can be another trek, but this time you’ll climb the Naini Peak, which is the highest point in the hill station with an altitude of 2615 meters. Even though it’s not for the faint of heart, you’ll have a panoramic and breathtaking view of the Himalayas.

Boating at Nainital

The Mallital Peak can be your next destination, and it takes around three to four hours to reach atop, but you can also opt for a pony ride to save your time and energy. If you’re feeling a bit more adventurous, take a cable car ride to Snow View Point for a thrilling experience on your Nainital trip. After a long and tiring day, you can head back to your hotel and prepare for the next one.

Day 5: Day Trip to Ranikhet

Ranikhet should be next on your list, which is around 60km from Nainital. Moreover, it is also a beautiful hill station with vivid architecture and an equally beautiful environment. On your way to Ranikhet, you can make a stop at Kainchi Dham, which is built in memory of the holy Neem Karoli Baba and is located at a picturesque site. Once you’ve reached your destination, drive to Chaubatia Gardens, which is an impressive spread of orchards that covers hundreds of acres. In the garden, you’ll find seasonal fruits like apples, apricots, peaches, etc.

Natural beauty of Nainital

The Jhula Devi temple, dedicated to Goddess Durga, is also nearby, and it boasts intricate wooden carving designs that are a treat to everyone’s eyes. Another site here is the Kumaon Regimental Centre Museum, where you’ll find exhibitions of photographs, weapons, and uniforms of the Kumaon regiment. As the sun begins to set, you can stroll and eat at some local cafes before returning to your hotel.

Day 6: Visit Mukteshwar

On day 6 of your Nainital trip, feel free to explore another nearby hill station, i.e., Mukteswar, which is around 50 km away. The Mukteshwar temple, built to honor Shiva, is a must-see place and an ideal spot for sightseeing and photography.

Nainital- City of Lakes

The Chauli Ki Jali cliff near the temple is another place where you can find similar views, with recreational activities like rock climbing and rappelling. If your inner nerd wants out, make sure you go to the Indian Veterinary Research Institute for a range of exhibits and specimens of flora and fauna. Lastly, drive back to your Treebo hotel and cherish the remaining wonderful moments of your Nainital trip.

Day 7: Departure

Time to say "Goodbye, Nainital!"

If your Nainital Tour Package was satisfying, it’s time for you to pack your bags, say goodbye to your Treebo hotel room, and head back home. Before you leave, soak in the beauty of Nainital one last time and stop by some dhabas to try local food like dal makhani, chole bhature, and parathas. You can also save the recreational activities for the last day, such as paragliding, zorbing, bird watching, etc. Make sure you bring back a memorable gift for your loved ones or even something for yourself that encapsulates the beauty of your Nainital trip.

I Never Believed In Ghosts, Until I Spent Time In This Cemetery In Nainital

Photo of Siddharth Sujan

The acclaimed French author André Gide once said, “A man cannot discover new oceans unless he has the courage to lose sight of the shore.” Well, travel sure does teach you a lot. But sometimes the experiences end up being so powerful that they affect you on a much deeper level.

About five years back, a trip to Nainital ended up being one such travel experience for me. Prior to taking this trip, I had been someone who identified himself as a non-believer of both god and demons. While I still identify myself as an atheist, the latter part has definitely changed. Yes, here’s my story of how a trip to Nainital made me believe in ghosts:

The legend of Nainital's cemetery

Located 3km from Nainital on the Bhowali Road, this British-era cemetery has quite a twisted history. The foundation grave here dates back to a time when Nainital was spelled Nynee-Tal. The cemetery was used by British officials based out of the region throughout the mid 1850s. Legend has it that it was post the 1880 disaster that the cemetery gained its infamous ‘haunted’ status.

Photo of I Never Believed In Ghosts, Until I Spent Time In This Cemetery In Nainital 1/3 by Siddharth Sujan

16 September 1880 saw one of the most horrifying events in the history of Nainital. It was on this unfortunate day that the hill town saw a deadly landslide. Official records claim that about 150 people lost their lives while a big chunk of the town was wiped out completely. It is said that rescue officials continued finding dead bodies for the coming few months – all of them eventually finding a place in the still unnamed British cemetery.

My experience at the cemetery

Unfortunately, I knew none of these things when I decided to venture into this spooky place. It was just a bunch of young, reckless boys road tripping through Uttarakhand, stopping at every place that struck a chord with their curious minds. One fine evening, we were driving back to our hotel after a hearty lunch in Nainital. There was still some time left before the sun went down. Driving on the Bhowali Road, we came across this spooky gate-like structure. We pulled over immediately.

Photo of I Never Believed In Ghosts, Until I Spent Time In This Cemetery In Nainital 2/3 by Siddharth Sujan

Luckily, we weren’t completely unaware of what we were signing up for. The sad part is that we decided to go ahead with it nonetheless. A member of the boy gang recalled reading about the cemetery long back. As soon as this information was out in the open, we jumped up in excitement. Without thinking it through even once, we found ourselves right at the cemetery gate.

The next moment, we were exploring the graveyard, trying to find out stories of the dead. That’s what teenage life is about – not thinking about much your actions and going with the flow? Isn’t it? Amidst all the curiosity, we didn’t even realise that we had been loud and to an extent, irresponsible. Being the young, dumb and broke travellers we were back in the day, we ended up clicking selfies and cracking lame jokes in the cemetery premises. Even though it was all in good fun, we’d never expected the repercussions to be so grave and show so soon.

What happened next?

After spending a good half hour in the graveyard, we were all set to hit the road. I resumed my duty behind the wheel. Barely a kilometre or so into the drive, I felt exhausted. It was a feeling unlike any other. It felt as if all the blood had been sucked out of my legs, leaving me tired and in unbearable pain. Mentally dismissing the pain as a muscle spasm, I continued my drive to the hotel. Turns out, it was much more than a spasm. Within half an hour of reaching our hotel, all of us encountered high fever. We were shivering incessantly and by now, had realised what had gone wrong.

Needless to say, we had no idea what to do next and hence, decided to sleep it off. After a power nap that lasted for a couple of hours, we woke up in an even worse condition. The fever refused to would not go down and naturally, we panicked. One bright soul amongst us suggested we order some soup. I still remember, Ajay, the waiter who got us soup walked in our room and in a flash, realised that something was off. The same guys who had been partying their nights away were now as still as a handful of rocks.

Photo of I Never Believed In Ghosts, Until I Spent Time In This Cemetery In Nainital 3/3 by Siddharth Sujan

As luck would have it, we got talking with Ajay. Upon hearing our story, a sense of responsibility took over him. He told us all about the place and made us realize what a big mess we had fallen into. He made all of us sit in a circle. We were told to follow his lead and repeat whatever he would say. He made us apologize to the energies, telling them that we never meant to demean them in any which ways and promised to never do something like this again.

Moral of the story

Believe it or not, a simple apologising ceremony held in a shady hotel room was all it took to ‘ward off’ the evil spirits. The next morning, we woke up feeling completely fresh – to an extent that it felt nothing had happened the previous day. We realised that we had been extremely irresponsible and it was only natural that all of this happened to us.

So remember fellow travellers, whenever you travel, respect the place and its native people. And if you happen to be dealing with eerie stuff, tread with extra caution and make sure you know what you’re signing up for.

MEXICO CITY — A few hours before the Yankees and Diablos Rojos del Mexico squared off in an exhibition game Sunday, manager Aaron Boone had to answer for why his club didn’t bring all of its stars.

The Yankees had Giancarlo Stanton, Anthony Volpe, Jose Trevino and Oswaldo Cabrera, plus relievers Victor Gonzalez and Jonathan Loaisiga.

Robinson Cano went 3-for-4 against the Yankees on Sunday.

Staying back in Tampa for various reasons, though, were Aaron Judge, Juan Soto, Alex Verdugo, the entire rotation and more to finish out spring training.

But a few hours later, even before the first pitch was thrown, the atmosphere inside Estadio Alfredo Harp Helú lifted the game to another level.

The Diablos Rojos’ 4-3 win over the Yankees was a three-hour party filled with nonstop chants, horns, music and a lively sellout crowd of 20,735 that dwarfed anything the Yankees might have experienced back in the Grapefruit League.

“The atmosphere exceeded everything [I expected],” Volpe said after the game.

“It was pretty awesome out there, man,” added Stanton, an avid traveler who was one of the proponents of playing in Mexico City after seeing a Bad Bunny concert at a soccer stadium — which had an “insane” atmosphere — here two years ago.

The Yankees’ first games in Mexico since 1968 — when a Mickey Mantle-led roster faced Diablos Rojos — came at a less-than-ideal time, just a few days from Opening Day and most of their unsettled roster staying back in Tampa to complete spring training.

But those that did make the trip relished the environment, even if they were feeling the effects of playing at the high altitude (though the baseballs did not fly after being kept in a humidor to offset the thin air).

“What a great experience,” Boone said. “So much energy, so much fun for us to all experience baseball in this environment.”

“It didn’t feel like a spring training game,” Trevino said. “I felt like it was a game-game.”

Trevor Bauer, who has not pitched in MLB since serving a 194-game suspension for violating MLB’s domestic violence policy, started the game for Diablos Rojos and threw three shutout innings.

Trevor Bauer threw three scoreless innings against the Yankees on Sunday.

But it turned into what Boone called “The Robinson Cano Show,” as the former Yankees second baseman went 3-for-4 with a home run , double and two RBIs with his new team.

The 41-year-old Cano spent much of pregame Sunday catching up with Yankees personnel — he mentioned a few times thinking about the “good old days” — and then caught the ceremonial first pitch from former teammate and Hall of Fame closer Mariano Rivera.

Cano hasn’t appeared in the majors since 2022 — a year after he was suspended 162 games for a second violation of MLB’s performance-enhancing drug policy — when he split time among the Mets, Padres and Braves.

But the left-handed slugger had a simple reason for why he is still playing.

“Because I love baseball,” he said. “People don’t understand that sometimes. It’s easy to tell someone, ‘Just go retire.’ But I think as long as I can do it and I can play and I can be on the field, I can do it.”

As for Bauer, he said the chance to pitch against the Yankees played a part in his decision to sign with Diablos Rojos, for whom he will spend at least the next month pitching.

He has offered to sign with an MLB team for the league minimum but has not yet gotten any takers.

“I have no idea what the future is going to hold,” said Bauer, who pitched last season in Japan. “I know I like playing baseball. I wanted to play. I love the international baseball. I wouldn’t mind staying here; I wouldn’t mind playing in Japan. I’d like to play in the big leagues again. … We’ll see.”

National Security Adviser Makes Covert Trip to Kyiv

Jake Sullivan met with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and his senior officials as additional U.S. aid continued to languish in the House.

  • Share full article

Jake Sullivan, in a black suit and a red tie, speaks into a microphone while seated in front of American and Ukrainian flags. Next to him is Andriy Yermak, the head of the presidential office of Ukraine, who is wearing green military-style clothes.

By Zolan Kanno-Youngs

Reporting from Phoenix

President Biden’s top national security official made a secret trip to Kyiv on Wednesday, as Ukrainian soldiers holding off Russian troops are running out of munitions and U.S. aid remains stalled in congressional gridlock.

Jake Sullivan, the national security adviser, met with President Volodymyr Zelensky of Ukraine and his senior officials “to reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine in its self-defense against Russia’s brutal invasion,” said a national security spokeswoman, Adrienne Watson. “He stressed the urgent need for the U.S. House of Representatives to pass the national security supplemental to meet Ukraine’s critical battlefield needs.”

The covert trip showed the rising sense of urgency in the White House to pressure Congress to pass billions of dollars of aid for Ukraine, a financial package that the Biden administration says the country needs to defend itself against Russia.

The White House has tried, so far unsuccessfully, to push House Republicans to support a $60 billion emergency spending plan for weapons for Ukraine and to bolster armament production in the United States.

With that funding held back and future U.S. aid in limbo, the administration last week sent Ukraine a $300 million package that included air defense interceptors, artillery rounds, armor systems and an older version of the Army’s longer-range missile systems known as ATACMS. But that package is most likely going to hold off Russia for only a matter of weeks, U.S. officials have said.

“Ukrainian troops have fought bravely, are fighting bravely throughout this war,” Mr. Sullivan said when the package was announced, “but they are now forced to ration their ammunition under pressure on multiple fronts.”

Mr. Sullivan’s visit came one day after Defense Secretary Lloyd J. Austin III met with other backers of Ukraine in Germany to strategize on how to maintain military support for Kyiv.

“Ukraine’s battle remains one of the great causes of our time,” Mr. Austin said.

News and Analysis

Russian missiles streaked into Kyiv  in the biggest assault on the Ukrainian capital in weeks, injuring several people and damaging several buildings.

Jake Sullivan, President Biden’s top national security official, made a secret trip to Kyiv to meet with President Volodymyr Zelensky and reaffirm the United States’ unwavering commitment to Ukraine.

Under pressure to come up with billions of dollars to support Ukraine’s military, the E.U. said that it had devised a legal way to use frozen Russian assets  to help arm Ukraine.

Symbolism or Strategy?: Ukrainians say that defending places with little strategic value is worth the cost in casualties and weapons , because the attacking Russians pay an even higher price. American officials aren’t so sure.

Elaborate Tales: As the Ukraine war grinds on, the Kremlin has created increasingly complex fabrications online  to discredit Ukraine’s leader, Volodymyr Zelensky, and undermine the country’s support in the West.

Targeting Russia’s Oil Industry: With its army short of ammunition and troops to break the deadlock on the battlefield, Kyiv has increasingly taken the fight beyond the Ukrainian border, attacking oil infrastructure deep in Russian territory .

Ohtani to speak to media for 1st time since illegal gambling, theft allegations against interpreter

LOS ANGELES — Shohei Ohtani plans to speak to the media Monday for the first time since the illegal gambling and theft allegations involving the Los Angeles Dodgers star and his interpreter emerged during the team’s trip to South Korea.

The interpreter , Ippei Mizuhara, was fired by the Dodgers last week when the team opened the season with two games against the San Diego Padres in Seoul.

Manager Dave Roberts endorsed Ohtani addressing the matter publicly. He said it was the two-way superstar’s decision to do so.

“It’s the right thing to do,” Roberts said. “I’m happy he’s going to speak and speak to what he knows and give his thoughts on the whole situation. I think it will give us all a little bit more clarity.”

Mizuhara was let go from the team following reports from the Los Angeles Times and ESPN about his alleged ties to an illegal bookmaker and claims from Ohtani’s attorneys that the Japanese star had been the victim of a “massive theft.”

Major League Baseball has opened an investigation of the matter. The Internal Revenue Service has confirmed that Mizuhara and Mathew Bowyer, the alleged illegal bookmaker in Orange County, California, are under criminal investigation.

Will Ireton, the team’s performance operations manager, has taken over translation duties for Ohtani. He previously did the same for then-Dodgers pitcher Kenta Maeda, who is Japanese.

Ohtani made only a brief appearance in the Dodgers clubhouse before Sunday’s Freeway Series opener against his former team, the Los Angeles Angels. The teams are playing three exhibition games before the Dodgers host St. Louis in their home opener on Thursday.

Ohtani was cheered loudly by the crowd of 42,607 each time he came to the plate for his first game as a Dodger in his home stadium. As the designated hitter, he went 0 for 2 with a walk and a strikeout before leaving.

He’s also expected to play Monday in Los Angeles and Tuesday in Anaheim, where he was a two-time AL MVP before leaving the Angels as a free agent to sign a record $700 million, 10-year contract with the Dodgers in December.

Roberts said Ohtani has not addressed his teammates as a group.

“I think that he’s had one-off conversations with players,” Roberts said.

The manager said he checked in with Ohtani to see how he’s doing.

“He’s kind of business as usual,” Roberts said.

Ohtani has a double locker in the Dodgers clubhouse located between the shower room and fellow Japanese pitcher Yoshinobu Yamamoto, who is slated to make his second start of the season on Saturday against St. Louis.

Extra security was posted in the jammed clubhouse on Sunday. Besides the players and a horde of media, eight temporary lockers were set up at one end for minor leaguers brought over from Arizona for the Freeway Series.

Overhead televisions were tuned to men’s NCAA Tournament games, baseball and horse racing, with former Los Angeles Dodgers catcher Paul Lo Duca offering TV handicapping tips on the day’s races.

The MLB gambling policy is posted in every clubhouse. Betting on baseball — legally or not — is punishable with a one-year ban from the sport. The penalty for betting on other sports illegally is at the commissioner’s discretion. Sports gambling is illegal in California, even as 38 states and the District of Columbia allow some form of it.

“The mood in the room is get ready for baseball because I don’t hear a lot of conversations and speculation,” Roberts said. “That’s why I think tomorrow is going to be good for everyone.”
