11 Important Differences Between MSC Cruises and Other Major Lines

MSC Cruises may not be huge in North America just yet, but that’s quickly changing. While the big three cruise lines — Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean — may get most of the headlines, MSC is actually just as large and even larger than some of those names.

Seemingly until the past few years, however, MSC hasn’t focused as heavily on the United States. That definitely isn’t the case going forward. Today, it offers cruises from Miami, Port Canaveral and New York, with more homeports on the way.

As well, the line is expanding its fleet. It made a mark with the introduction of the MSC Seaside in the U.S., followed by MSC Seascape more recently, but that’s just the start. The line currently boasts the largest cruise ship in the world outside of Royal Caribbean with its MSC World Europa. That will be joined by MSC World America in 2025.

In other words, if you haven’t been tempted by an MSC cruise yet, it could be a different story in the near future.

Having recently sailed on MSC, as well as sailing the other major cruise lines regularly, we can tell you that there are some major differences between this line and its competitors.

Differences Between MSC and Other Major Cruise Lines (Carnival, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, Etc.)

MSC Seaside docked at Ocean Cay.

MSC Is Less Expensive Than Most Lines If you’re searching for a cruise aboard MSC, the first thing you are likely to notice is the price of your trip. We’ve priced thousands of cruises over the year and MSC offers many of the cheapest trips we’ve seen; often times even less than Carnival, which is known as a budget-friendly line.

For example, a week cruise aboard the MSC Seascape (a relatively new ship) from Miami in July 2024 can be had starting for just $749 per person.

Comparable trips during that time run more than $900 aboard Carnival Celebration sailing from Miami. Sailings on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas for a week in July from Miami start at $2,207.

MSC doesn’t have a lock on cruise deals, but it does offer a lot of affordable choices. Rates are even less expensive if sailing outside of summer or holidays.

Fewer Included Restaurants Like other cruise lines, MSC also has a mix of included restaurants and specialty restaurants where you will pay extra to dine.

What’s different with MSC is that the amount of included restaurants — and the number of restaurants in particular — are sparse.

This isn’t every ship, but on those we’ve sailed, only the buffet and main dining room have been available with the cruise fare. All other restaurants (of which there were only a handful) cost more.

Compare that to a line like Carnival that includes spots like Guy’s Burger Joint, BlueIguana, and more restaurants with the cruise fare.

View of MSC's Ocean Cay from cruise ship

Ocean Cay (MSC’s Private Island) While all the major cruise lines have their own private islands, only MSC has Ocean Cay. Just 65 miles from Miami, MSC poured $300 million into converting the island from a former sand excavation site into a tropical paradise. It’s a must-see. ( Read our complete guide to Ocean Cay here .)

What makes it so special are the beaches and water. It features multiple massive beaches, giving plenty of room for everyone to have their own space. In addition, the water is an electric blue that’s some of the most beautiful we’ve ever seen.

While some cruise lines have created wild island that almost look like a cartoon with all the attractions, Ocean Cay is more subdued, with more space, and fewer visitors each day. If you’re wanting a relaxing beach day, this is it.

Not as Tech Savvy There’s no doubt that technology has come a long way in cruising. These days you can do everything online from checking in to buying excursions to navigating the ship via the cruise line app.

And while MSC has come a long way in the past few years regarding integrating technology into cruising, it still has some room to improve.

For instance, when we checked online prior to the cruise, we encountered numerous errors trying to do basic things like add a credit card to the account. Anytime we did make a change or added information, it would automatically send out an entirely new booking confirmation to our email.

Lower Gratuity (Service Charge) Amounts Of all the major cruise lines, MSC has the lowest automatic service charges of any line we’ve seen. Over the past several years gratuity amounts — the daily charges that go to people like your room steward and the dining staff — have crept up among most cruise lines.

These days it’s usual to pay $16 per person, per day for these charges. Book a suite, and the charge is usually higher — closer to $20 per day. Norwegian Cruise Line, for instance, charges $25 per day for people in suites and $20 per person, per day, for other rooms.

MSC charges a relatively low $14.00 per person , per day for passengers that are 12 years and older. Kids aged 2-11 are charged just $7.00 per night (typically kids are charged full price on other lines).

Room Stewards In our experience with MSC, the room stewards are much less noticeable than what you’ll find on other cruise lines.

We’re used to meeting the room steward on the first day of the cruise, and then seeing them regularly each day coming to and from the room. On MSC, we only spotted him a time or two during the cruise.

Even so, our room was regularly cleaned. In fact, we actually prefer not having to constantly bump into a room steward and make small talk on our way in and out of the cabin.

Evening Entertainment on the Ship In a world where cruise lines are pushing the envelope everywhere to make your experience bigger and better, MSC is decidedly old-school in some respects — like your evening entertainment.

Most cruise lines seem to be pushing toward full-scale production shows. Norwegian Cruise Lines, for example has productions of Footloose and Kinky Boots on some of its newer ships. Royal Caribbean offers big budget programs and even aqua shows on its Oasis-class ships.

In comparison, MSC is different. A handful of ships feature Carousel Productions at Sea (similar to Cirque du Soleil), but not all. In our experience, the entertainment is more of things like a “variety show” featuring singing, dancing, and acrobatics. For instance, one cruise had a new take on Peter Pan that included contortionists, circus acts, and a juggler. Another show was a dedication to Michael Jackson, complete with an impersonator and full dance numbers.

Frankly, the talent level on these programs has been amazing, and the shows have been a big hit. However, they’ve struck us as a big departure from what we’ve seen on other lines.

Pizza For pizza to be pointed out as a difference with other cruise lines, you know the pie on MSC must be pretty good.

We’re big fans of “good” pizza. What we’ve found, however, is that these dishes usually aren’t that great on many cruises. Frankly, the pizza on many ships is usually a bit bland and has a cardboard taste that you’d find at a cheap buffet.

Maybe it’s because MSC has roots in Italy, but they take their pizza seriously. It’s on par with anything you’d find at a popular pizza joint (and much better than chain restaurants). Best of all, it’s free at the buffet. You can also get an entire pie made to order and delivered to your cabin for $6-$10.

Drink Package Options Most cruise lines have a single drink package… or maybe a regular package and a high-end package. Meanwhile, they all have one thing in common — they are pricey. Most drink packages start around $60 per day and go up from there.

MSC does things a bit differently, offering three different options:

  • Premium Extra

What’s the difference? Each package gives you drink options up to a certain dollar amount. The Easy package offers drinks up to $8 each, the Easy Plus package offers up to $10 each, and the Premium Extra gives you any drink up to $16 per glass.

Prices run from about $50-$90 per person, per day if booked ahead of time. This gives you a cheaper option than you’ll find on most other cruise lines with the Easy package.

msc cruise line stand for

Linking a Credit Card to Your Account One difference between MSC and other cruise lines definitely struck us as odd, and that’s how you attach payment to your onboard account.

Every cruise line we’ve been on always asks for a credit card at check-in. It is scanned and linked to your account. At the end of the trip, your card is automatically charged after you leave.

In our cruise with MSC, passengers completed this process themselves — either online ahead of time or once actually on the ship. Several terminals are set up around the ship where you will insert the credit card you use for payment to link to your onboard account.

It’s on you to make sure your account is all squared away with a payment method. If you forget then you’ll have to go see Guest Services to settle your bill before you are allowed to leave the ship.

Be Prepared for Lots of Waivers If you sail MSC, then be prepared to sign waivers for things you don’t have to on other cruise lines.

Should you do some of the more extreme things on other cruises, it’s likely you have to sign something. For instance, the Flowrider surf simulator on Royal Caribbean requires you to complete a form before you can enjoy.

MSC takes it to another level. On the cruise line if you want to lift weights or run on the treadmill in the gym, you’ll need to sign a waiver. Want to ride one of the waterslides? Yes, there is a form to complete before you can do so.

Not Completely Different Than Other Lines (Tons That’s Familiar)

We don’t want to give the impression that MSC is an absolutely unfamiliar experience or completely different than sailing any other line. If you’ve sailed a cruise before, there’s a lot that you’ll know and love.

Want to sit on the pool deck, sip a cold drink and soak up the sun? There’s plenty of that. How about dinner in the dining room followed by an impressive show in the theater? Sure, that’s there too. And what about a little late-night gambling in the casino? Of course.

However, it’s the details surrounding life onboard that might stand out if you’re used to some of the other lines in U.S. cruising.

History of MSC Cruises: the largest privately-owned cruise company

MSC Cruises is the fourth-largest cruise company in the world, after Carnival Corporation & plc, Royal Caribbean Group and Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings.

MSC is part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company S.A. (MSC), the world's second-biggest container shipping operator, employing 23,500 people worldwide.

The cruise line offers affordable luxury accommodation, an upscale and relaxing onboard experience, and European hospitality.

Quick summary of MSC Cruises' history

MSC Cruises is the largest privately-owned cruise line in the world and has been a leading global cruise line for over 30 years.

In 1970 Mr Gianluigi Aponte founds the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC, with the acquisition of its first cargo ship, Patricia.

MSC first entered the cruise market in 1988 when it purchased the liner Monterey.

MSC Cruises was then established in 2002 when it became a subsidiary of the MSC Group.

Since then, MSC Cruises has become the third biggest cruise line worldwide, with a fleet of over 19 ships.

In 2019, MSC Cruises served nearly 2.7 million passengers and 185 nationalities worldwide.

It is now expanding heavily in the US and Caribbean market. And part of this was the launch in 2019 of the Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The cruise brand is the leader in Europe, South Africa and South America. MSC Cruises appeals to passengers that are seeking a Mediterranean feel and a cruise line focused on the destination.

The fleet also attracts a slightly younger crowd, 45 years on average vs the rest of the industry at 46 years (CLIA).

Who is Gianluigi Aponte, owner of MSC?

Gianluigi Aponte, born on 27 June 1940, is the owner of the Mediterranean Shipping company - the parent company of MSC Cruises.

MSC currently is a leader in global container shipping operating 510 cargo ships and is the second biggest container company worldwide.

The first mention of the family is from 1675 and includes the felucca Giovannina, which for many years sailed around the Sorrento Peninsula.

In 1970, Gianluigi Aponte borrowed money and founded MSC with the acquisition of Patricia, his first ship, followed by Rafaela. He began a route between Somalia and the Mediterranean.

The rumour was that MSC would carry anything that the rest of the maritime transport industry found difficult to carry.

According to Forbes Gianluigi Aponte, as of 14 June 2021, is worth USD 11.4 Billion.

What nationality is MSC Cruises?

The headquarters of MSC Shipping was established in Geneva, Switzerland in 1978. MSC is a Swiss company.

30,523 staff works for MSC Cruises worldwide, on land and onboard. The ships visit 102 countries annually and transport 2.7 million passengers from 185 nationalities.

The Lirica Class, Musica Class and Fantasia Class ships are sailing under the flag of Panama. The Meraviglia Class, Meraviglia Plus Class and Seaside Class vessels are sailing under the flag of Malta.

MSC Cruises history in more detail

Founded in Naples, Italy with headquarters in Geneva, Switzerland, MSC Cruises is part of the MSC Group, incorporating the cargo side, which is the second-largest container shipping enterprise worldwide.

1988 - Start of the passenger cruise business

MSC bought the liner Monterey.

A year later, MSC took over the Lauro Cruise Line, which was only a one-ship cruise line with the Achille Lauro.

The newly formed company took the name of StarLauro in honour of Mr Lauro, Aponte's mentor and founder of Lauro Cruise Line.

The cruise fleet of StarLauro remained at two until December 1994 when the Achille Lauro caught fire and sank off the coast of Somalia on her way to South Africa.

1995 - StarLauro Cruises was renamed MSC Cruises

In 1995 StarLauro acquired the Cunard Princess and renamed it the MSC Rhapsody. The same year saw the purchase of MSC Symphony.

At the same time, MSC Cruises was formally founded as a subsidiary of MSC Cargo.

In 1997 the Melody joined the fleet to bring the capacity of MSC Cruises to 4 ships.

2003 - Beginning of modern MSC Cruises

In 2003, with the arrival of Pierfrancesco Vago at the helm of MSC Cruises, the liner started a € 5.5 billion investment program to build the world's most modern cruise fleet.

MSC Cruises commissioned Les Chantiers de L'Atlantique for their first new build. The MSC Lirica , a 1,445 passenger ship / 721 crew members was launched in April 2003, followed by her sister ship MSC Opera in 2004.

The MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia both Lirica class ships and sisters to MSC Lirica, were purchased from Festival Cruises in early 2004 when the cruise line went bankrupt.

MSC was now operating 8 cruise ships with a focus on the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America and South Africa.

Part of its €5.5 billion investment plan was the build of new MSC class liners - Musica Class and Fantasia Class.

MSC Musica outside Dubrovnik in Croatia

The Musica class ships have a higher number of balcony and suites compared to the Lirica class. With an average of 2,550 passengers, this class brought about the launch of the MSC Musica (2007), MSC Orchestra (2007), MSC Poesia (2008) and MSC Magnifica (2010).

The Fantasia class ships have an even higher number of passengers than the Musica class vessels. With 3,300 guests, there are 4 ships in this class - MSC Fantasia (2008), MSC Splendida (2009), MSC Divina (2012) and MSC Preziosa (2013).

In 2013, MSC Cruises' CEO, Vago, stepped aside to become Chairman to let Gianni Onorato take over as CEO.

2013 was also the first time that the global cruise line brand would target the North American market by deploying the MSC Divina out of Miami.

The North American market was much trickier to conquer than MSC thought. They came in with the same value proposition as they had in Europe and the beginning of the season was hard.

They made a lot of adjustments for the US market, especially with the entertainment and the food. This finally ended up resulting in a success.

2014 - extra four vessels ordered

MSC Cruises, with a €5.1 billion investment plan, announced that it would be adding an extra four vessels to its fleet.

April 2016 - Second phase investment plan

After the 2014 initial €5.1 billion investment, MSC announced a further €3.9 billion to further its fleet expansion plan.

This extra investment programme will see the build of a new prototype design and adding a new class of ships -  the World-Class - to the growing MSC Cruises global fleet.

The World-Class ships will be set to carry around 6,840 passengers in 2,760 cabins.

These ships will use LNG propulsion technology, a more environmentally-friendly source of fuel.

Two World-Class vessels have been signed with STX France and are due to launch in 2022 and 2024. There are an extra two options for 2025 and 2026, which were confirmed in 2019 by the line.

In December 2016, STX France and MSC Cruises confirmed the two options of Meraviglia-Plus class ships that were set in 2014.

The two ships are to be delivered in October 2019 and September 2020.

November 2017 - Order of two new Seaside Class ships

Fincantieri shipyard and MSC Cruises have confirmed a further fleet expansion plan, with the build of two new Seaside Class vessels for an investment of €1.8 billion .

Instead of being Seaside Class, these two ships will be the first two Seaside EVO ships. These are to be delivered in 2021 (MSC Seashore) and 2023 (MSC Seascape).

2018 - Ultra-Luxury line concept is launched

In October 2018, MSC Cruises announced that they will be entering the ultra-luxury market with 4 ships starting in 2023.

Each 500 cabin ship will be inspired by the already popular concept of MSC Yacht Club, which features onboard most of the fleets' vessels.

The total build is estimated to be in excess of €2 Billion and will be built by the shipbuilder Fincantieri in Italy.

Since then, the company has been steadily growing, adding new ships and destinations to its thriving cruise line.

Although it’s headquartered in Switzerland, you’ll find MSC cruises all over the world, including throughout the United States. Let’s take a look at MSC’s cruises, where they sail and what to expect when you’re aboard.

The History of MSC Cruises

17th January 2024

As the fourth-largest cruise company in the world, MSC Cruises is a shining example of what cruising is all about. With an unwavering commitment to excellence and a fleet of incredible ships, MSC is undoubtedly a force to be reckoned with. From the distinctive Mediterranean vibes onboard to the domination of the European, South African, and South American markets, MSC Cruises knows exactly how to provide an exceptional cruise experience.

Here, you can delve into the inspiring history of MSC, from its humble beginnings as a family-run shipping company to its current position as one of the world’s top cruise companies. Whether you’re already planning your next MSC cruise or simply seeking inspiration, the remarkable story of this company is sure to captivate you.

MSC Cruises History: A Timeline

So how did MSC Cruises get to where they are today? Discover the fascinating journey of MSC Cruises throughout the years in the timeline below.

The Aponte family have been in the shipping business for many years, and after experiencing the industry while growing up, Gianluigi Aponte decided to establish the Mediterranean Shipping Company (MSC) in Brussels at the age of 30. The company was set up to introduce new shipping routes and would have much bigger cargo ships than most other shipping companies at the time.

Aponte acquired his first cargo ship, Patricia, that same year and set out to carve his own space in the overseas shipping industry. Shortly after, a second ship – named Rafaela after his wife – was added to the fleet. He began sending the ships on a new route between Somalia and the Mediterranean.

Aponte officially moved his shipping company to Geneva, Switzerland where it has stayed ever since.

MSC stormed into the cruise market in 1988 when it purchased two liners from Lauro Lines. Aponte named one MSC-Starlauro and retained the name of the other which was the Achille Lauro. This marked the beginning of a new era for the cruise industry, with MSC dominating the field. A year later, MSC bought Lauro Lines.

MSC Cruises was established in 2002 when it became a subsidiary of the MSC Group.

Since then, MSC Cruises has become the third-biggest cruise line worldwide, with a fleet of over 19 ships including those acquired from Lauro Lines.

Pierfrancesco Vago was appointed CEO of MSC Cruises, and the company launched an ambitious €5.5 billion investment program to build the world’s most modern cruise fleet. The plan to reach a 12-ship fleet within 10 years was unrivalled by any other cruise line competitor. Les Chantiers de L’Atlantique, one of the world’s biggest shipyards located in Saint Nazaire, France, was commissioned for its first new build.

msc cruise line stand for

Part of its €5.5 billion investment plan was the build of new MSC class liners – Musica Class and Fantasia Class. MSC Lirica , a 1,445-passenger-capacity ship with 721 crew members was also launched in April 2003.

MSC Lirica’s sister ship – MSC Opera – followed closely by in production, being built the following year. The liner carries 2,679 passengers with a crew of around 728 members.

MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia , both Lirica Class ships and sister ships to the MSC Lirica were purchased from Festival Cruises in early 2004 when the cruise line went bankrupt. So by the end of 2004, MSC Cruises was operating 8 cruise ships sailing around the Mediterranean, Northern Europe, South America and South Africa.

MSC Cruises welcomed over 1 million guests onboard their ever-growing fleet for the first time. Their popularity in the market at the time demonstrated their stability and hinted at more expansion plans in the near future.

MSC Preziosa was inaugurated, completing MSC Cruises’ ambitious expansion plan successfully within 10 years.

No time was wasted putting a new plan together and the Renaissance expansion program was put into motion the following year. This time, €200 million would be invested over the following decade with 13 additional ships in the pipeline. The MSC Meraviglia launched as the first ship of the new plan that same year.

The program also included ship enhancements for several liners, including MSC Lirica.

The MSC Foundation, an independent not-for-profit organization, was founded to lead the way and advance the MSC Group’s noble commitments towards conservation and humanitarianism.

MSC Cruises served nearly 2.7 million passengers and 185 nationalities worldwide in 2019. The cruise line was quickly expanding into the US and the Caribbean markets, helped by the launch of MSC Marine Reserve Ocean Key, Bahamas.

The company announced that they had placed orders for four Explora Journeys Luxury cruise ships which would be arriving between 2023 and 2026.

The naming ceremony for MSC World Europa – the latest flagship of the MSC Cruises’ fleet – took place in Doha, Qatar. This ship symbolises the beginning of a new era of cruises as the company declares their dedication to environmentally conscious liners.

msc cruise line stand for

Still curious to learn more about the history of one of the world’s largest liners? Whether you want to know what MSC stands for or where they’re based, we have all the answers right here for you to dive into.

Who owns MSC Cruises?

MSC Cruises is privately owned by the Aponte family, making it one of the world’s largest privately owned cruise lines. Although the company is technically owned by the Mediterranean Shipping Company, everything has remained family-owned and run since the very start.

The owner of MSC Cruises is Italian billionaire, Gianluigi Aponte. His family, including his wife Rafaela, daughter Alexa, and son Diego, all play important roles in the business with prominent positions. Gianluigi Aponte is not only the founder of the company but also serves as the Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises.

Gianluigi and Rafaela Aponte have a shared net worth of $13.2 billion, making them one of the wealthiest couples in the shipping industry. They’re also known to be among the top 150 richest people in the world.

What does MSC Cruises stand for?

MSC is an abbreviation for Mediterranean Shipping Company. The MSC Group has two divisions: cargo and passenger. While the cargo division still handles a thriving overseas shipping business, the passenger division controls the privately owned cruise line.

Where are MSC Cruises from?

MSC Cruises is based in Geneva, Switzerland and has operational offices in Naples, Genoa and Venice. The Swiss company has around 30,500 staff working for MSC Cruises around the world, both on land and onboard their cruise liners.

A few of the ships sail under different flags, however. The Lirica Class, Musica Class and Fantasia Class ships sail under the flag of Panama, while the Meraviglia Class, Meraviglia Plus Class and Seaside Class are sailing under the flag of Malta.

So there you have it. MSC Cruises has an exciting history, and we couldn’t be happier to be part of their journey. If you’re ready for an incredible cruise onboard one of their impressive ships, here at Cruise Nation we can take care of everything for you. MSC Seaside

Contents Show

If MSC Cruises has its way, it’ll eventually be as well known in North America as brands like Carnival, Norwegian, and Royal Caribbean.

MSC Divina at Ocean Cay

Although MSC is far better known in European markets, it has slowly but surely been grabbing the attention of American cruisers, especially since the splashy arrival of MSC Seaside back in 2017.

With prices that are often considerably lower than the competition and ships that have significantly raised the company’s profile, MSC is definitely making a splash with North American cruisers.

It’s worth noting, however, that the Swiss-based line has encountered a few growing pains along the way, especially in regard to the differing needs of an American audience.

MSC Seaside sailing

A Basic Introduction To MSC Cruises

Before we take a closer look at why MSC Cruises might — or might not — be right for you, let’s take a quick look at the history of the company.

Founded in Italy in 1989 as a part of the Mediterranean Shipping Company, MSC Cruises has since become one of the world’s largest cruise companies (and the largest privately-held cruise operator).

Until relatively recently, their primary target was European cruisers, with minor forays into the North American market.

It was the aforementioned MSC Seaside that really changed things where the company’s efforts to penetrate the North American market were concerned.

The ship — which previously sailed year-round out of Miami — was specifically designed for North America, with the company heavily promoting Seaside to both American and Canadian cruisers.

After the cruise industry shutdown in 2020, MSC Cruises moved  Seaside  from Miami to Europe and South America.

Two ships are currently homeported in Miami: MSC Divina and MSC Seashore. For the first time ever, MSC is also sailing from Port Canaveral. Currently,  MSC Meraviglia  is operating voyages from the central Florida port.

A fourth ship,  MSC Seaview,  is spending the winter sailing in the Caribbean from Barbados and St. Maarten.

Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve

In addition to the ships that ply the waters of the Caribbean, MSC Cruises recently invested heavily in the construction and opening of its own private Bahamian island called Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The island, which differs from the private islands of other lines because of its focus on the environment, includes a dock for one ship, pristine beaches, and many activities for guests to enjoy.

Is This the Right Cruise Line For You?

While MSC Cruises offers similar amenities to its rivals, it tends to be priced lower (sometimes significantly so).

As for the experience, there is a definite European influence and international flavor to MSC sailings, with announcements in several languages (English, Italian, Spanish, French) to accommodate the many guests from outside North America and food with a distinctive European flair.

Guests who sail MSC Cruises routinely comment on the European-inspired art and decor, thoughtful design of the ships, and connection to the sea the vessels offer.

On the other hand, a complaint which is sometimes heard is that that the crew is not as “friendly” as other lines, but this is probably related to the European ethos of the company which stresses the quality of service over what might be called a “feel good” approach to customer appreciation.

Consider the difference between a waiter at a casual American restaurant and a fine dining establishment in Rome, and you have an idea of what to expect.

What MSC’s Ships Have To Offer

During the busy winter season, MSC Cruises might have four or five ships sailing the turquoise Caribbean waters. Larger, newer ships such as the MSC Meraviglia and  MSC Seashore offer tons of onboard activities, easily comparable to the flashiest Royal Caribbean, Norwegian, or Carnival ships.

It’s worth noting that many of these activities come with an additional fee. This is one of the reasons we often say that when booking a cruise, make sure to look at the base fare and any expenses you’ll encounter along the way.

MSC Divina Freeport Bahamas

Slightly older vessels like the MSC Armonia and MSC Divina have been kept up well thanks to recent refurbishments; the Armonia was in late 2019, and the Divina was in 2016.

While smaller than the newest MSC ships, both the Armonia and Divina have a classic European feel and are generally well-regarded among those who prefer a smaller ship experience.

READ MORE: MSC Meraviglia Ship Review

Onboard entertainment varies by ship. On the MSC Meraviglia , the options include theater shows, a ropes course, and more bars than you could hope to drink from in a week.

MSC Armonia and MSC Divina offer classic review shows and the type of musical acts that will be familiar to cruisers of other lines, along with a good mix of bars and restaurants.

For kids, every MSC ship offers a splash pad and pool section along with age-appropriate kids clubs featuring a partnership with LEGO.

MSC Cruises pizza

Regarding where the ships go, MSC Cruises has done its homework when it comes to creating interesting itineraries for travelers. A full slate of Western Caribbean, Eastern Caribbean, and Bahamas sailings are offered, with most of the popular ports represented.

Most sailings range from three-night Bahamas getaways to two-week adventures.

What You Need To Know About MSC’s “Experiences”

sail away msc cruises port miami

When it comes to booking on an MSC ship, things are handled differently than on any other line sailing out of North America. MSC offers a variety of packages which they call “experiences.”

Each of the three levels — Bella, Fantastica, and Aurea — offers both different perks and price points. So what is the difference between them?

  • Bella:  This is the basic package, which includes your cruise fare and taxes, tap water, tea (tap) and coffee in the dining rooms, access to kids’ programs, and most onboard activities. This experience offers a guaranteed cabin, which means you cannot choose its location and are assigned your specific cabin closer to the sail date.
  • Fantastica:  This package is offered in cabins located on higher decks, including some ocean views, balconies, and interiors, and features some extra amenities, including room service.
  • Aurea:  The highest-end category is for those staying in a suite and includes discounts on spa treatments, as well as free access to the spa’s thermal suite.

Fantastica and Aurea also offer one free cruise change, which is applicable on either the cruise dates or the destination. The change needs to take place up to one month prior to departure for a new cruise that sails within three months of the original departure.

Aurea also offers flexible dining and access to a dining area specifically reserved for those classes. On most ships, Aurea guests have a dedicated outside space that is restricted to only guests at this level.

Occasionally, MSC Cruises offers specials in conjunction with the various levels, such as drink packages, wifi access, or other perks.

Because booking an “experience” is foreign to non-MSC cruisers, it’s worth consulting with a rep from the line or your travel advisor to ensure you understand exactly what you’re getting and how much it will cost.

MSC Divina stateroom cabin

It should be mentioned that MSC Cruises has done a great job with its Super Family Cabin, which is a way for larger groups to sail together at an affordable price.

Offered on the MSC Meraviglia, MSC Seaside, and MSC Seashore , these staterooms include a set of bunk beds, a king or two twins, a separate room with a fold-out couch, and two bathrooms! Some also offer additional features such as bathtubs (as opposed to a simple shower) and balconies.

What is the MSC Yacht Club?

MSC Meraviglia Outdoor Pool Yacht Club

The MSC Yacht Club is a ship-within-a-ship concept that allows guests to have access to their own secure area. This entitles guests to their own restaurant, pool, bar, lounge (with drink package included), their own elevators, and priority embarkation.

MSC ships that have the Yacht Club are MSC Grandiosa , MSC Bellissima ,  MSC Divina ,  MSC Fantasia ,  MSC Meraviglia ,  MSC Preziosa , MSC Seashore, MSC Seaside , MSC Seaview , MSC Splendida, and MSC Virtuosa .

Should you Consider MSC Cruises?

While they are still considered “the new kid” in the North American market, MSC Cruises is quickly gaining market share and mindshare among cruisers, thanks in no small part to fares that are often hundreds of dollars per person less than comparable sailings on their big-name competitors.

MORE: Photo Tour of MSC Divina

If you are ready for something a little different and willing to sacrifice some of the mass market appeals that come with other lines, then MSC Cruises is certainly something to consider.

Ocean Cay is a testament to their commitment to sustainability and offers unique experiences that simply can’t be found on any other cruise line’s private island.

MSC Meraviglia promenade

For families, MSC should be a top contender, not only due to those exciting Family Super cabins but also for their frequent Kids Under 11 Sail Free promotions, the LEGO partnership, range of on-deck activities, and commitment to helping families connect in new and exciting ways.

  • Gratuities, spa treatments, and extra activities like go-karts and roller coasters are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment.

Cabin and Accommodations

The cabin is included in the fare, so I don’t have to worry about any extra charges for my room. It’s great to know that I can enjoy a comfortable and cozy space without any additional costs.

The cabin amenities vary depending on the cruise line and the type of cabin chosen. Typically, cabins come with standard features such as a bed, storage space, a private bathroom, and a television. Some higher-end cabins may offer additional amenities like a balcony, mini-fridge, or even a butler service.

As for room service options, many cruise lines offer 24-hour room service, allowing passengers to order food and beverages directly to their cabin. It’s a convenient option for those who prefer dining in the privacy of their own room.

Food and Dining Options

I love the variety of food options available on a cruise, from the buffet to the main dining room.

The buffet is a great option for those who want a wide selection of dishes to choose from. They usually offer a range of cuisines, including international dishes, salads, soups, and desserts. It’s a casual dining experience where you can try a little bit of everything.

On the other hand, specialty restaurants are a more upscale option. These restaurants often have a specific theme or cuisine, such as Italian, steakhouse, or seafood. While these restaurants come at an additional cost, they provide a more intimate and gourmet dining experience.

Whether you prefer the variety of the buffet or the elegance of the specialty restaurants, there are plenty of dining options to satisfy every palate on a cruise.

Entertainment and Activities

With a wide range of entertainment shows, activities, and movies, there is never a dull moment on a cruise ship. Here are some key things to know about the entertainment and activities on board:

Free shows: Cruise ships offer a variety of free entertainment shows, including Broadway-style performances, live music, comedy shows, and magic acts. These shows are included in the fare and provide great entertainment for guests of all ages.

Paid activities: While many activities on the ship are included in the fare, there are also some paid activities available for an additional charge. These can include go-karts, simulated skydiving, and even roller coasters. These activities offer a unique and thrilling experience for those looking for a little extra excitement on their cruise.

Additional Charges and Gratuities

When it comes to additional charges on a cruise, it’s important to be aware of the cost of specialty restaurants and gratuities. Specialty restaurants offer a more upscale dining experience and usually have a cover charge. These restaurants offer a variety of cuisines and are a great option for a special night out. Gratuities, on the other hand, are the service charges that are automatically added to your onboard account. These charges typically amount to around $15 per person, per day, and are distributed among the ship’s staff. It’s important to budget for these charges as they are not included in the cruise fare. Additionally, spa treatments and services are not included in the fare and also come with an additional cost. So, be sure to factor in these extra charges when planning your cruise budget.

Keywords: specialty restaurants, gratuities, spa treatments.

Extra Activities and Excursions

Go-karts, simulated skydiving, and roller coasters are some of the extra activities on a cruise that may require an additional charge. These paid activities provide an exciting and thrilling experience for passengers seeking adventure on their vacation. Cruise lines offer a variety of options to cater to different interests and age groups. From high-speed go-kart races to indoor simulated skydiving, these activities add an extra level of excitement to the onboard experience.

However, it is important to note that these activities are not included in the cruise fare and require separate payment. Additionally, when the ship docks at various ports, passengers have the opportunity to participate in shore excursions. These excursions, which are organized by the cruise line, offer a range of activities and experiences at the destinations visited, such as guided tours, water sports, and cultural explorations.

Similar to the paid activities onboard, shore excursions also require separate payment. It is advisable to plan and budget accordingly to enjoy these additional experiences during your cruise.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Using the Gym on the Cruise Ship?

Yes, there may be additional charges for using the gym on the cruise ship. However, there are usually membership options available that allow guests to use the gym for free, just like in a resort.

Are Tender Boats Available for Free During Port Visits?

Yes, tender boats are available for free during port visits. They are included in the cruise fare and run the entire time the ship is in port. There are no additional fees for using them.

Do Specialty Restaurants on the Cruise Ship Require an Extra Charge?

Yes, specialty restaurants on the cruise ship require an extra charge. However, there are still plenty of included dining options. Onboard entertainment, such as daily shows and activities, is included in the fare.

Are Spa Treatments and Services Included in the Cruise Fare?

Spa treatments and services, like massages and facials, are not included in the cruise fare. They come with additional charges. However, the gym is free to use and offers great views.

Are There Any Additional Charges for Activities Like Go-Karts or Simulated Skydiving on the Ship?

Yes, there are additional charges for activities like go-karts and simulated skydiving on the ship. These are considered specialty activities and are not included in the cruise fare.

Everything you need to know about MSC Cruises cabins and suites

Ashley Kosciolek

A relative newcomer in the North American market, MSC Cruises is equal parts elegant and kitschy. The line tends to appeal to a wide swath of cruisers, from Europeans who like to party into the wee hours of the morning to American families who book because of affordable fares and "kids sail free" pricing.

To satisfy its diverse passenger base, MSC offers accommodations to fit all types of travelers. Rooms include inexpensive inside cabins that sleep two people, midlevel staterooms with windows and balconies, and high-end suites that offer cruisers with larger budgets a private oasis in the form of the MSC Yacht Club .

A variety of connecting rooms and cabins with extra bunks accommodate larger groups and families who wish to share space.

Because your cruise cabin will be your home away from home for several days, it's important to book one that fits your needs. That's especially true if you're sharing it with several people.

Whether you're looking at an inside cabin for a cruise with friends, balcony accommodations for you and your significant other or a suite for your family, here TPG breaks down what you can expect when you book a room on one of MSC's ships.

MSC Cruises cabin primer

msc cruise line stand for

MSC Cruises has become one of the fastest-growing lines in the cruise industry, with about two dozen ships in its fleet. The vessels fall into six classes : Lirica, Musica, Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World.

Although cabin offerings can vary from ship to ship and class to class, the standard types remain the same: inside, outside, balcony and suite.

Additionally, you'll find the same basic amenities in each room, unless otherwise noted below. They include two twin beds that can be joined to form a queen- or king-size bed; an in-cabin bathroom with a shower, a sink, a toilet and basic soap, shower gel and shampoo; a couple of nightstands; a chair or sofa; a desk/vanity; a closet; a safe; a hair dryer; a minifridge; a phone; USB outlets and a selection of both North American and European outlets.

On all ships except MSC Lirica, MSC Opera, MSC Sinfonia and MSC Armonia, you'll also find an interactive TV that allows you to view the daily schedule, check your onboard account and choose from a selection of live TV programs and movies.

Twice-daily room tidying is provided by a room steward assigned to each cabin, and room service is available throughout the day for an added fee.

One confusing aspect of MSC's bookings is that you'll have to select an experience package in addition to a cabin type. Package tiers determine things like your ability to choose a specific cabin and preferred dining time and whether you'll receive welcome amenities in your room. Certain cabin types are only available in conjunction with certain package experiences and vice versa. Those are noted in each respective section below.

Accessible cabins , including accommodations for wheelchair users, are available on every ship in MSC's fleet. In addition to more space, they feature wider doorways and lowered sinks and toilets in the bathrooms, as well as grab bars.

MSC Cruises' experience packages

Here's what you get when you book each of MSC's three experience packages, which determine the perks you'll receive on your sailing.

  • Accommodations
  • Complimentary food in the dining room and buffet
  • Broadway-style theater entertainment
  • Access to the onboard gym, pool and kids club
  • MSC Voyagers Club points
  • One for-fee change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Drink package discount at time of booking
  • All Bella perks
  • Choice of specific cabin and location
  • One free change to your cruise booking (with some restrictions)
  • Ability to choose between early and late seating for dinner
  • Room service (complimentary for breakfast, but fees apply for other meals)
  • Discount on pre-cruise specialty dining package
  • All Fantastica and Bella perks
  • Flexible My Choice dining, which lets you eat at any time you choose between set hours
  • Free 24-hour room service delivery
  • Pillow menu
  • A welcome package, including Prosecco and chocolates
  • Complimentary access to your ship's solarium and thermal area
  • A 10% discount on all spa treatments purchased on board
  • Special Balinese massage offer when booked pre-cruise
  • Complimentary use of bathrobe and slippers
  • Priority boarding and luggage drop-off

Inside cabins on MSC Cruises ships

msc cruise line stand for

Inside cabins — rooms with no windows — are available on all ships in the MSC fleet. Ranging from 140 to 301 square feet (depending on the ship), they make for great sleeping because they're so dark. They're also ideal for passengers who are on a budget.

In addition to the standard amenities mentioned above, they provide room for anywhere from two to four passengers to sleep. (Rooms that sleep more than two feature bunks that pull down from the ceiling.)

These cabins are available with the line's Bella and Fantastica experiences.

If you're sailing solo, some MSC vessels offer cabins for one outfitted with a twin bed that converts into a couch. These interior studio accommodations are only available with the Bella package on MSC Meraviglia , MSC Bellissima and the line's World Class ships.

Ocean-view cabins on MSC Cruises ships

msc cruise line stand for

Ocean-view rooms are similar to insides in that they provide basic amenities — but with a view.

Offering 129 to 269 square feet of space (depending on the specific ship and ocean-view category), these staterooms allow you to see outside through a porthole or a window that doesn't open.

MSC's outside cabins are available to passengers who book Bella and Fantastica packages.

Additionally, if you're traveling with your family or another group, several of MSC Cruises' ships — particularly those in the Meraviglia and Seaside classes — feature space for as many as 10 passengers via a series of connecting rooms. Options are available at the ocean-view and balcony levels.

Balcony cabins on MSC Cruises ships

msc cruise line stand for

You might be surprised to discover that most of MSC Cruises' balcony cabins provide less interior square footage than what's available in inside or ocean-view staterooms.

Balcony rooms run anywhere from 129 to 205 square feet, but their key feature is, of course, a private balcony, which does add an extra 32 to 129 square feet, depending on the vessel and specific type of balcony room booked. These cabins are bookable in conjunction with MSC's Bella, Fantastica and Aurea experiences.

Although balcony cabins offer upgraded amenities, including MSC's brand of hand lotion and toiletries, they are largely the same as inside and ocean-view accommodations.

MSC's newest ships — including those in the Meraviglia, Seaside and World Classes — house connecting balcony rooms that can sleep up to 10 in the same group traveling together.

Additionally, on its World Class ships, the line has introduced inward-facing balconies, similar to the ones Royal Caribbean pioneered in 2009 with the debut of its Oasis Class vessels . On World Europa, for example, they overlook the ship's promenade, offering views of the activity below, rather than the ocean.

MSC Cruises suites

msc cruise line stand for

All ships in MSC's fleet have suites that can be booked as part of the Fantastica and Aurea packages, but it's Aurea that offers the largest number of perks, as outlined above.

The several types of suites vary by ship in terms of size and amenities. Some come with balconies, while others only offer floor-to-ceiling panoramic windows.

Junior Suites

Although this room type is listed as a suite, it's essentially a balcony cabin with a bit more space — 183 square feet of interior accommodation with a balcony that ranges from 140 to 183 square feet.

Standard suites include rooms with huge balconies larger than the cabin's interior space and ones with private whirlpool tubs. They run from 269 to 355 square feet, with balconies measuring 32 to 409 square feet.

Grand Suites

msc cruise line stand for

Coming in between 377 and 420 square feet, with balconies spanning from 32 to 495 square feet, Grand Suites — found on Seaside and World Class ships — come in two types. They include standard one-bedroom Grand Suites, as well as two-bedroom varieties.

The latter has one bedroom with a queen-size bed and another with two twins. It sleeps up to five passengers and offers two bathrooms — one with a shower and the other with a bathtub.

While most suites are designed for double occupancy, some suite accommodations on MSC Bellissima, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Virtuosa and MSC Magnifica can sleep up to five people.

MSC Yacht Club suites on MSC ships

msc cruise line stand for

All cabins located in the MSC Yacht Club — an exclusive, gated area on select ships — are called suites, even the smallest and least expensive, which don't have windows or balconies.

Yacht Club suite types range from insides to two-deck duplexes, all of which come with butler and concierge services, luxuriously appointed furnishings (such as real marble finishes, memory foam mattresses and Egyptian cotton sheets) and access to members-only restaurants, bars (alcohol is free there), lounges, pools and sun decks.

The Yacht Club features seven different types of rooms. Ships that have the MSC Yacht Club on board include MSC Bellissima, MSC Divina, MSC Fantasia, MSC Grandiosa, MSC Meraviglia, MSC Preziosa, MSC Seaside, MSC Seascape, MSC Seaview, MSC Seashore, MSC Splendida, MSC Virtuosa and MSC World Europa.

Note: Not all Yacht Clubs have the same suite types available.

MSC Yacht Club Interior Suites

Although these 161- to 226-square-foot cabins don't offer a view or fresh air, they are elegantly decorated and include all the Yacht Club benefits mentioned above.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Suites

msc cruise line stand for

These Yacht Club digs are the equivalent of a balcony cabin — but in a dedicated area that includes all the exclusive perks. They run 236 to 366 square feet and have balconies ranging from 54 to 86 square feet, so they also come with a bit more space, both inside and outdoors.

MSC Yacht Club Deluxe Grand Suites

Similarly, Deluxe Grand Suites are like the Yacht Club equivalent of booking a Grand Suite with more perks. Depending on the ship, they offer anywhere from 269 to 463 square feet of space, plus 65- to 129-square-foot balconies. Some Grand Suites also have two bedrooms instead of one. Further, these rooms on Seaside Class ships include bathrooms with bathtubs, as well as separate living areas.

MSC Yacht Club Duplex Suites

msc cruise line stand for

Rising two decks, MSC's duplex staterooms measure 495 to 635 square feet and come with 65- to 334-square-foot balconies. They feature living rooms with two-person sofa beds downstairs and master bedrooms upstairs, which also sleep two passengers.

Each of these accommodations comes complete with two walk-in closets and two bathrooms — one with a bathtub and one with a shower. Most duplexes on Meraviglia and World Class ships also have their own private whirlpool tubs.

MSC Yacht Club Executive and Family Suites

The line's Executive and Family Suites, available only on Fantasia Class vessels, are an excellent choice for anyone who wants to stay in the Yacht Club with a family or other group of more than two people.

This option, which is one type of suite (despite its confusing name), has space for up to five cruisers via a combination of bunk beds, sofa beds and beds that pull down from the ceiling, depending on the ship. The suites clock in at around 431 to 549 square feet, depending on the vessel.

The only drawback is that these staterooms have no balconies and no in-room dining areas, but they do include all the perks you'd find in Yacht Club cabins.

MSC Yacht Club Royal Suites

msc cruise line stand for

Although they only occupy one level, at 388 to 667 square feet, MSC's Yacht Club Royal Suites are right up there with the Duplex Suites in terms of space. They offer the second-largest amount of square footage after the Owner's Suites. They come with huge balconies comprising 355 to 753 square feet of outdoor area.

Additionally, bathrooms in these suites offer bathtubs on Fantasia, Meraviglia, Seaside and World Class ships, and the latter three have private whirlpool tubs, as well. All four classes' Royal Suites also include separate living room areas.

MSC Yacht Club Owner's Suites

The largest and most impressive of all MSC's cabins are the Owner's Suites found in the Yacht Club. Offering an impressive 840 to 1,119 square feet — larger than some land-based apartments — plus 269- to 670-square-foot balconies, they're some of the most luxurious rooms afloat.

Specific amenities vary by ship, but as an example, Owner's Suites on MSC World Europa offer floor-to-ceiling windows and walk-in closets. These accommodations on both the line's Seaside and World Class vessels also feature bathrooms with separate showers and bathtubs, as well as private whirlpool tubs and separate living room areas.

Bottom line

msc cruise line stand for

Although MSC Cruises' cabin types are straightforward, the line's add-on experiences can complicate things a bit.

Overall, what's key to remember is that MSC Cruises offers a wide variety of rooms and pricing to meet just about any budget or style of cruising. Each ship will offer accommodation choices from the least expensive, bare-bones interior rooms to the priciest suites, which come with butler and concierge services.

When you sail with MSC Cruises, you can expect function, style and comfort, regardless of the cabin type you book.

2024 Cruise Line Reviews

MSC Cruises Review

  • MSC Cruises
  • Best for budget-friendly, Mediterranean-themed, large-ship cruising in the Caribbean, Europe, and Mediterranean
  • 23 ships in the fleet
  • Private island in the Bahamas on some itineraries

MSC Cruises is a family-oriented cruise line that was founded in 1960 in Naples, Italy. The company is now one of the largest cruise lines in the world, with a fleet of 23 ships that sail to destinations around the globe. MSC Cruises offers a wide range of itineraries, from short Caribbean cruises to transatlantic voyages and longer world cruises.

Spring break in the Caribbean is a go

Caribbean sailings are MSC's bread and butter, and so we weren't surprised at all to find 35 itineraries in March of the next calendar year. These sailed from Miami, NYC, and Port Canaveral (Orlando), giving travelers plenty of options for their spring break vacay or winter escape. MSC's base fares on those itineraries were extremely budget-friendly: not counting taxes, fees, and port expenses, you could take a three-night cruise to the Bahamas starting at just $139 per person. Even the most expensive itinerary in that timeframe, an 18-night cruise to the Western Caribbean sailing in and out of Miami, still came in at just $1,389 per person for the lowest-priced stateroom. And, most Caribbean sailings include a stop at MSC's private island in the Bahamas, Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Tips are mandatory but removable

But, you'll need to factor in not just the taxes, fees, and port expenses (which are displayed in small print on each cruise listing), but also many other costs you might not be anticipating. For example, gratuities (described as a "Hotel Service Charge" ) are mandatory on MSC, usually $14.50 per person per night for guests 12 and over and half that for children ages 2-11. You can ask to have them removed at Guest Services onboard if you aren't happy with the service. (Also worth noting: unlike most cruise lines we're familiar with, MSC does not recommend tipping individual members of staff beyond the automatic gratuity.)

It gets spendy to drink anything besides water

Drinks and dining are another area where MSC guests often get taken by surprise, especially if they've sailed with another cruise line that is a little more all-inclusive. You'll get water, coffee, tea and iced tea with meals, plus juice at breakfast. Otherwise, you'll need to purchase a drink package, even if all you want are soft drinks, if you don't want to rack up massive a la carte beverage charges. Be aware that the packages are for the duration of the cruise, they can't be shared between guests, and all guests in a stateroom have to buy a package to get unlimited drinks (obviously this won't apply if one cruiser is an adult and the other is a minor; there are non-alcoholic and minor drink packages available too). Expect fees starting around $25 per person per day for the non-alcoholic options and around $70pp per day for the top tier wine, beer, cocktails and soft drinks package.

Best Cruise Lines

Pay extra for services that most rivals include at no cost

Finally, MSC has "Experience" packages you can apply to your reservation.

  • Every sailing comes with the " Bella Experience " by default - which essentially just gets you on the ship and gives you the bare-bones services like main restaurant dining, use of the facilities, and so on.
  • Upgrade to " Fantastica " to be able to request which dining seating time you prefer and get free delivery of breakfast to your stateroom.
  • The top-tier package is the " Aurea " : complimentary access to the Top Exclusive Solarium, a welcome package with Prosecco and Chocolate, anytime dining, 10% discount on spa treatments, priority boarding, and free delivery of 24-hour room service.

If you've ever cruised elsewhere, you can see that MSC charges for services that many cruise lines just give you automatically, like letting you request a particular dining time or free room service whenever you wish. Plus, those "Experience" packages don't come cheap: our research indicates that you could pay an extra $50-$100 per person per day for the mid-tier upgrade and $100-$200pp per day for the highest upgrade.

Good option for families

On the positive side, MSC cruises are very family-friendly, with plenty of activities to keep cruisers of all ages entertained. Some travelers enjoy having a more international experience aboard as well, since many passengers are European (and specifically Italian, go figure ).

Worth doing some comparing before booking a cruise here

MSC definitely has its fans, especially among those who want to get away from the typical American cruise line environment and try something different. And, if you understand what you will and won't get with MSC, you could get a really low-priced cruise that reaches some top destinations. However, too many cruisers get drawn in by the low initial fare, only to find that by the time they've covered their taxes, fees, gratuities, drinks, and "experiences" , it's not so much of a bargain anymore. We encourage you to look at some of MSC's higher-ranked rivals (outside of the luxury categories, of course) before booking with this cruise line: you might be able to take advantage of a travel deal that would get you more for your money elsewhere.

The 15 Best Cruise Lines

Which cruise line is the best.

Cruising is a popular way of traveling for many people, offering a unique experience that combines the convenience of a floating hotel with the excitement of visiting multiple destinations in one trip. In an average year, over fifteen million people say "all aboard" and set sail on an amazing vacation.

There are many different cruise lines to choose from, and each one offers a different type of experience. Some are geared towards families, while others are more focused on luxury or adventure. What would you like to see and do while you're onboard? Is a casino a must-have or a rather-avoid? Would a Broadway-caliber show tip the scales for you? Do you need a wide range of activities to keep the kiddos happy while the adults live it up or relax? The onboard activities and amenities can really make or break your vacation, so be sure you know what you're getting.

The Best Cruise Lines

Cruise Line FAQ

Which cruise line is the best, what is included in the cost of a cruise, what is the minimum age to cruise, what are the dining options on a cruise ship, are cruise ships crowded, do i have to dress up, are activities included at destination ports, can i bring my own alcohol onboard.

Compare the Best Reviews

Continued from above...

Another factor that can influence which cruise line you choose is the itinerary. Cruise ships travel all over the world, but some cruise lines may not have destinations available where you're hoping to go. You should also consider the size of the ship: larger ships offer more amenities, but smaller ships can access ports that bigger ships can't.

Speaking of amenities, make sure you understand what you'll get as part of your fare and which extras will come with an additional cost. For example, most cruises offer drink packages for alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages, but a few have drink stations where you can get complimentary lemonade, coffee and tea. Other amenities that might be important to you are Wi-Fi, spa services, babysitting, fitness classes, and upgraded dining experiences. You can usually get a decent discount if you sign up for an amenities package before you sail, so keep an eye out for promotions in the months leading up to your sailing.

When you take a cruise, it's almost always expected that you'll tip the crew members who have attended to your needs while onboard: your cabin steward ( who probably leaves your towels folded into fun shapes every night ), your servers at your nightly meals, and the head waiter. Cruise lines have a recommended gratuity to cover all three of those staff members, usually $15-$20 per traveler, per day; the total gratuity amount may be charged automatically to your account, or you may be given envelopes to make cash payments.

While it usually isn't mandatory to pay those gratuities - you can ask to have them removed if they're applied automatically, especially if you've received poor service - it's typically considered in poor taste not to tip at the suggested levels (because crew members' salaries, much like servers at your local restaurant, are based on the expectation of tips paid by guests). And, if you receive service that goes above and beyond, adding to the recommended gratuity is always appreciated. Be aware that tips for bartenders, poolside servers, and professional services provided in the spa or elsewhere are not included in the daily suggested gratuity and may be charged automatically at the time of service.

Now that you have a good overview of the cruising experience, which cruise line should you choose? Beyond the points we already covered, here are a few additional criteria that might make it easier to pick:

  • Embarkation port. You could get a great deal on a cruise, but what will it cost you to get to the port? That could involve airfare, an overnight stay or two in a nearby hotel (so that you're less likely to be affected by travel delays), and transportation from the airport or hotel to the port. This is especially true if you're taking a cruise that departs from an international destination.
  • Perks for repeat cruisers. Like frequent flyer programs on airlines, most cruise lines offer benefits the more you sail. If you find yourself absolutely loving cruise vacations, it can be advantageous to put all of your eggs in one basket, so to speak. Rewards programs can include casino benefits, complimentary meals at the upgraded dining experiences, exclusive sail-away parties with free cocktails and tchotchkes, early-access booking on future cruises, and much more.
  • Reputation. It's a really smart idea to see what other travelers have said about their overall experience with a cruise line before booking your trip. The ads on TV may make that private island look amazing, but someone who's been there might point out that you'll pay extra to get on that waterslide. Or, previous cruisers could tell you that despite having several formal nights on the schedule, a particular cruise line has no problem with people showing up to dinner in flip-flops and swimsuit coverups. Find out if the cruise line you're considering lines up in reality with what they advertise.

Here at Top Consumer Reviews, cruising is one of our favorite ways to travel and experience new things. And with so many different cruise lines to choose from, it can be overwhelming to know where to start. But, don't worry: take a look at our in-depth analysis of today's most popular options, find the one that's the best match for your vacation ideas and your travel party, and book that trip you've been dreaming of. Bon voyage!

What is the SRN $ 80 charge line item for?

Cool Cruiser

This is listed under the 3rd person (teen) for our room reservation.  What does it stand for?  Is it refundable if the teen doesn't come on the cruise?  Port fees would be refunded if the teen doesn't come right?

Ship? Sailing?  In Europe you pay the service charges up front so it could be that.  More info needed to help.

Port fees are refunded for anyone who is a no-show.

No, absolutely not. Only for cruisers from special markets who paid the port fees separated from the cruise fare. For other customers nothing will be refunded in case of a no-show.

Its a 4 night cruise out of Port Canaveral.

It just has a line item for SRN $80 listed for the 3rd person in the room (a teen).  Its lists the cabin price, that charge, then taxes and fees. cabin fares 119

Gov't fees and taxes 110.00

Wondering if this is for Non alcoholic drink package for teen.

$20/ day x 4

Promos are usually only for passengers 1 and 2.

Thanks

Quite likely!... Promos are just for pax 1 and 2 pretty much everywhere. If you have a drinks package, teen will need to pay for the teens non alcoholic version, even if it's a "teens sails free" promo, and port fees are bundled on your base fare.

Like

I had to call to ask a questions about something else and they told me it was just taxes.  That on their end they see it broken down that way for passenger 1 and 2 also (but I just see cruise fare on my end)?   but who knows, that's also an easy response so I don't ask more questions.

For fun, I priced out the 7 day one for the week before ours, and it listed the SRN fee as $159 for the teen.   So if it was just the $20 x number of nights it would have been $140??   We are paying it either way,  I was just curious what it was since its only listed under the 3rd passenger.

Mea culpa; US-centric here, thinking others are the Special Markets - like how Daily Service Fees (gratuities) are included in cruise fares for Brits but Americans pay it in addition.  (Like we pay sales tax on a bill,  but VAT is already in the price of goods.

Thanks for widening my perspective.  (I’m not being sarcastic).

The Points Guy

Which line has the best cruise burger? Here are TPG's top picks

T here's no vacation more closely associated with food than a cruise, so what better time to indulge than when you've set sail? Despite the variety of cuisine on modern cruise ships , sometimes you just feel like comfort food in the way of a big ol' greasy burger.

From standard hamburgers and cheeseburgers to meatless selections, I've combed the seven seas to find the best of the best cruise ship burgers. And I'm not talking about your average, wilted "sitting by the pool deck under a heat lamp for 30 minutes" options. (They have their place, too, of course. It's just not in this article.)

Here are my picks for some of the best cruise burgers.

For more cruise guides, news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

The Burger, MSC Cruises

Where to find it: The MSC Yacht Club's Ocean House restaurant , found on private island Ocean Cay

Cost: Free for passengers staying in MSC's Yacht Club

TPG Take: Billed as "a signature blend of fresh Angus chuck, short ribs, grilled brisket meat patty, red onion jam [and] Monterey Jack cheese," this burger, exclusive to MSC Cruises ' Ocean House restaurant, is one of my absolute favorites. Stacked high with lettuce, tomato and, in my case, ketchup and mayo, it's a tall order — literally.

However, the taste is what makes it truly impressive. Bursting with just the right amount of flavor, the burger is perfectly complemented by the cheese and onion jam. It also comes with fries, but with how tasty The Burger is, they're really just a garnish.

TPG rating: 5/5

American Diner Cheeseburger, Norwegian Cruise Line

Where to find it: American Diner on Norwegian Bliss, Norwegian Breakaway, Norwegian Encore , Norwegian Escape, Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Joy

Cost: $12 or free with a dining package redemption

TPG take: The American Diner Cheeseburger, available at the '50s-style, extra-fee eatery on six of Norwegian Cruise Line 's newest ships, looks like what you'd expect from any respectable greasy spoon restaurant. It's topped with cheddar cheese and piled high with lettuce, tomato, pickles and raw red onions on a toasted bun. The patty is made from a blend of chuck, brisket and short rib meats, and though that sounds scrumptious, the burger was surprisingly lacking in flavor. I was sad that I paid $12 for it, as I've had better burgers for free at the pool deck grills on other ships. Go with the Carolina pulled pork slider appetizer instead.

TPG rating: 3/5

Impossible Burger, Virgin Voyages

Where to find it: Razzle Dazzle, a veggie-forward restaurant that's included for all passengers on a complimentary basis on all of Virgin Voyages ' ships

TPG take: Kudos to Virgin Voyages for its massive effort to cater to vegetarians and cruisers on a gluten-free diet. The line's ships offer several varieties of beef burgers at the Burger Bar stand in The Galley food court. However, I'm giving a shoutout to the Impossible Burger, found in Razzle Dazzle, a "new American" eatery on board. The tasty plant-based patty is topped with poblano salsa, paprika, vegan mayonnaise and avocado and served on a bun with either fries or a salad. As a regular meat-eater, I was impressed. Although I could tell that it wasn't meat, the flavor was amazing and satisfied my burger craving in a way that pleasantly surprised me.

TPG rating: 4/5

The Original, Royal Caribbean

Where to find it: On all of Royal Caribbean's Oasis Class and Freedom Class ships , plus Adventure of the Seas, Anthem of the Seas, Explorer of the Seas, Mariner of the Seas and Navigator of the Seas

Cost: There is a $12.99 cover charge for as many menu items as you'd like (unless you have a dining package, in which case it's free). Soda and milkshakes cost extra.

TPG Take: Yeah, we know you can visit Johnny Rockets just as easily on land as you can on one of Royal Caribbean 's ships. Still, there's something novel about stopping in for a delicious burger, some onion rings or fries, and a shake while you're at sea. My favorite burger option is The Original — a simple, classic take featuring a quarter-pound beef patty, lettuce, tomato, chopped onion, relish, pickles, mustard and mayonnaise. It's delicious and just greasy enough to make you feel like you've properly indulged.

The SDG Burger, Princess Cruises

Where to find it: The Salty Dog Gastropub on Crown Princess, Discovery Princess , Emerald Princess and Ruby Princess

Cost: A cover charge of $14.99 allows you to choose two menu items plus a dessert. Beverages cost extra.

TPG Take: The SDG Burger (which stands for Salty Dog Grill Burger) is a rib-eye and short rib patty with pork belly, Gruyere cheese, kimchi beer-battered jalapenos and charred onion aioli on a brioche bun. I had high hopes, but what I received was a burger so greasy that the bun was wet and soggy. The pork belly was undercooked, rubbery and excessively fatty. The flavor was decent, which saved it from being a total loss, netting this burger a lower but still passable rating.

Frankly, I was majorly disappointed to find The Ernesto — a delicious burger that used to be served at the Salty Dog Gastropub — is no longer on the menu since Princess parted ways with chef Ernesto Uchimura.

The Ringer, Carnival Cruise Line

Where to find it: Guys Burger Joint on all Carnival ships except Carnival Luminosa

TPG take: Although Guy's Burger Joint — a burger counter found on Carnival Cruise Line ships in partnership with Food Network star Guy Fieri — is located poolside on most vessels, it does not serve your average pool grill burgers. Choose from one of five different meat-based gut-busters or a veggie burger on request. My favorite is The Ringer: a cheeseburger with lettuce, tomato, onion, pickles, Guy's signature donkey sauce, brown sugar barbecue sauce and a giant onion ring. It also comes with a side of phenomenal fries.

The best part? It won't cost you a penny extra.

Bottom line

Of all of these options, my favorite is Carnival's The Ringer. It's simple, delicious and free, which makes it more accessible (unlike my second favorite, MSC's The Burger, which you have to book a suite to enjoy).
