Classic Inca Trail to Machu Picchu 4 days

Peru Adventure Tours

The ancient ruins of Machu Picchu in the Peruvian Andes with clouds and hills in the distance.

Highlights of Peru Adventure Tour

  • Challenge yourself to tough but rewarding Inca Trail or Quarry Trail in the dramatic Andes Mountain Range and enjoy the breathtaking view of Machu Picchu.
  • Head into the lush Amazon rainforest and explore a world of exotic animals and fascinating plants.
  • Fly over the puzzling Nazca Lines and descend the intriguing underground tunnels of Chinakas to unearth archeological mysteries.
  • Surf the tropical beaches of Mancora or go kite surfing over its glimmering waters.
  • Ascend the highest peaks of South America in the Huayhuash Mountain Range or go off-roading in the impressive sand dunes of Ica.

Travel Tips for Peru Adventure Tour

  • Pack accordingly depending on which part of the country you plan to visit. Peru adventures demand that you brave the elements, be it chilly mountain peaks or dense and humid rainforests.
  • Invest in valid travel insurance to cover medical and personal emergencies such as emergency evacuations. We advise using the World Nomads’ travel insurance.
  • Be sure to carry cash on hand, particularly if you are traveling in remote areas, where ATMs are hard to come by.
  • Brush up on your Spanish basics before arriving in Peru. Our local guides will do the communicating for you during your Peru adventure tour, but the freedom to communicate on your own is useful.
  • Be sure to stay hydrated by frequently drinking bottled water, whether you’re trekking through the jungle or roving through the desert.

  • Machu Picchu (obviously!). Insider advice, stay the night in the village to have the ruins to yourself before the crowds arrive late-morning.
  • Inca Trail - the classic hike takes 4 days, but there are versions from 1-6 days.
  • Sacred Valley - When the Inca nobles or Cusco wanted to escape to city, this was the spot. Most visit on rushed day trips, so be sure to stay the night in one of the charming villages.
  • Manu Biospher - in our opinion, the wildest place in Peru's Amazon. See the largest macaw lick and maybe even giant river otters!
  • Lima - this was once headquarters for Spain's sprawling colonial empire. Now it's headquarters for a world renknown culinary scene. The city teams with history and mouthwatering food.

The best time to visit Peru is during the winter season – during the months from May to September. These are the dry seasons so you’ll be able to enjoy the breathtaking views without fear of heavy rainfall or scorching heat.

If you want to see the popular attractions like Lake Titicaca and Machu Picchu, 18 days should be enough for a round trip of Peru. You can do it in less time but it will be a lot more hectic!

Peru is absolutely safe for first time travelers! Although Peru is still a developing country, their tourism sector has strong foundations and tourists can have a safe and enjoyable time as long as they follow a few necessary precautions.

The most famous attraction in Peru is the Machu Picchu, a site of Incan origin and heritage and one of the New Seven Wonders of the World. Besides that, they also have Lake Titicaca and the Amazon Rainforest. If those aren’t enough, Cusco and Lima are cities that are steeped in local Peruvian culture.

Peru is a South American developing country and it is extremely budget-friendly. Whether you are planning to go on sightseeing tours or just roam around the cities, a budget of $50 – $150 should cover all your needs for a day!

Best time to visit peru.

Peru is a fascinating country with four distinct geographical regions. Not many countries can offer beaches, mountains, rainforests and deserts on one visit. These distinct regions offer something for everyone, which is why most Intrepid tours operate all year round.

June, July and August are considered the driest months in the Highlands and Amazon basin and are optimal for hiking and river journeys. However, even during the rainy season in the Amazon, the rains only fall for a few hours at a time. In the Andes, the rainy season can sometimes just mean a bit of overcast weather.

Remember that the Inca Trail is closed for maintenance in February, although there are other treks to Machu Picchu which are available at this time.

Culture and customs

Like many other South American nations, contemporary Peru is a rich mix of the modern and the ancient. In the highlands, where most of the population is Quechua or Aymara (descendants of the Incas), people speak their local language, wear traditional clothes, follow Inca traditions and chew coca leaves. Most lead agricultural lives and there is a great deal of poverty.

This is a stark contrast to the  European -influenced coast, which is considerably wealthier and mixed with Europeans, Mestizo (mix of Spanish and indigenous), Afro-Peruvians, Japanese  and Chinese immigrants.

Cultural festivals offer fascinating insights into the ancient customs of Peru that have been carried on from Inca times, with centuries-old food, clothing, song and dance playing an integral role in these celebrations.

What unites the country is a reverence for religion and family, as well as a love for soccer, or  futbol , as it’s called here.

Eating and drinking

Peruvians take their food seriously. Whether you’re in a village or a large city, your taste buds will thank you for visiting this South American nation.

Peruvian cuisine draws on a mix of Andean, Spanish, African and Asian influences. Stews and soups made with potatoes (Peru grows more than 4,000 varieties!), corn and quinoa are common, particularly in the highlands. Japanese-inspired seafood dishes and chifas (Peruvian-Chinese fusion) restaurants are also popular along the coast.

The cuisine is meat-heavy, but vegetarian options aren’t hard to come by - particularly dishes featuring avocados which grow abundantly throughout the country.

Taste your way through Peru on our  10 day Peru Real Food Adventure.

Foods to try in Peru

Peru's national dish is made with fish marinated in lime juice, onions, salt and chili peppers. It's typically served with chunks of corn on the cob and sweet potato. Cevicherias in Lima do it best.

Adventurous eaters should add cuy (guinea pig) to their must-try list. Roasted and usually served whole, it’s a popular staple in the highlands.

3. Lomo saltado

This beef or alpaca stir-fry is a popular chifa dish found across Peru.

4. Pisco sour

Made by mixing pisco, the national brandy, with lime juice, egg whites and sugar, this creamy and zesty cocktail goes down a treat.

5. Coca tea

Rumored to help with altitude sickness, this tea made from coca leaves is drunk by locals all over the Andes region and is hailed for its 'medicinal' properties.

Geography and environment

Peru is home to a diverse range of landscapes, including parts of the Amazon Basin, the Andean mountain range and Lake Titicaca. Not to mention areas of tropical savanna, desert, cloud forest and mangroves. Peru also has a long stretch of coast along the Pacific Ocean.

The Pacific Coast alternates between narrow bands of desert and fertile valleys, while the Andes cut through the center of the country, separating the coast from the jungle. Machu Picchu, Cusco and Puno are all located in the Highlands region.

History and government

Early history.

Archaeological evidence indicates that early life in Peru started up to 11,000 years ago, with nomadic people living a hunter-gatherer lifestyle. Organized civilizations based on land cultivation appear to have been established sometime around 6000 BC.

Over the centuries, Peru has seen many different civilizations rise and fall, grow and decline and evidence of these ancient civilizations can be found all around the country today, with the Nazca Lines being one of the most enigmatic examples.

However, the Incas lay claim to being one of the most famous and revered empires of all. Spanning from 1438 to 1532 AD, the audacious Inca Empire was responsible for one of the world's most impressive archaeological ruins – Machu Picchu.

Recent history

Military coups and regional disputes have dominated Peru's more recent history. The period between 1960 and 1990 saw lots of political instability and economic difficulty. With world commodity prices leveling out, Peru's agriculture-based economy suffered, as did its population who were largely reliant on farming.

New leadership in the 1990s and beyond has led to economic reforms and trade promotion, which has driven economic growth.

Celebrating the centenary of the re-discovery of Machu Picchu in 2011, Peru continues to enjoy widespread international attention for its cultural and historical riches.

Must-visit places in Peru

Peru isn't short of bucket list-worthy wonders. Here are just a few must-visit places to experience on your trip:

1. Machu Picchu

No matter how many photos you've seen, nothing can prepare you for seeing Machu Picchu in the flesh. Time slips away as you try to uncover the ruins' secrets and marvel at how such grandeur is possible in such a remote place.

Immerse yourself in ancient history on our 8 day  Inca Trail Express from Lima  tour.

History comes to life in Cusco . You can't turn a corner without coming across another reminder of its Inca past. Ruins are everywhere, and even new, elegant buildings have been built upon old Inca temples, houses and markets.

3. Sacred Valley

This fertile valley is packed with Inca sites including the massive fortress of Ollantaytambo. Visit on market day when the laidback villages come to life. The cobbled streets fill with every color, produce and animal imaginable.

Trek through llama-filled plains on our 15 day  Sacred Land of the Incas trip.

4. Amazon Jungle

Spend mornings watching colorful macaws and monkeys, and afternoons learning about traditional plant usage or spotting crocs in oxbow lakes. Then, at night, get your torch ready to seek out the jungle's larger creatures.

Spend a weekend in the Amazon on our 4 day  Amazon Jungle Short Break.

Peru's capital is home to unexpected treasures. Dig beneath the city's surface to uncover pre-Columbian temples, a touch of elegance and a huge dose of modern distractions; like the cafe-rich district of Miraflores. Lima is also world-renowned for its incredible food scene.

Savor the flavors of Lima on our 20 day  Peru Encompassed tour.

6. Arequipa

The White City, as it's affectionately known, is spectacular. Surrounded by canyons, volcanoes and deserts, the location is perfect for exploring Peru's wild side. But the true beauty of the city is in its buildings, built from white volcanic rock.

7. Colca Canyon

While the canyon is a dramatic sight (it's twice as deep as the Grand Canyon), it's a glimpse of the elusive Andean condor that will really get your heart racing. With a wing span of 3.2 meters, this bird doesn't just glide, it soars.

Marvel at this massive canyon on a 21 day  Peru Essentials tour.

8. Lake Titicaca

Big enough to house countless island communities, coca smugglers and the entirety of Bolivia's navy, Lake Titicaca is massive. Remnants of ancient cultures are everywhere and many communities live on reed islands as they have done for hundreds of years.

See Peru through the eyes of the locals on a  Lake Titica Homestay.

9. Nazca Lines

The Nazca Lines are one of the world's great mysteries. Shapes of spiders, monkeys and birds are drawn into the desert landscape over 500 sq kilometers. The most amazing part? They're only visible from the air.

10. Aguas Calientes

Whether you've just trekked the Inca Trail or traveled by train through the Sacred Valley, Aguas Calientes is the perfect place to stop, soak in a steaming thermal bath and reflect on the adventure so far.

Explore the 'gateway to Machu Picchu' on our  9 Premium Peru trip.

You'll find vendors selling colorful Peruvian handicrafts at tourist spots across the country. When possible, try to carry small bills and coins, as it can be difficult for vendors to give change, especially in remote areas.

Things to buy in Peru

1. Alpaca wool clothing

As one of the largest alpaca wool producers in the world, you'll find alpaca wool clothing almost everywhere in Peru. Beautiful shawls, ponchos and jumpers are the perfect way to keep warm, as Peruvians have traditionally done for centuries.

The classic hallmark of any backpacker who has traveled through South America, the chullo (knitted hat with ear flaps) might be a bit of a travel cliché but will be well-received as a gift back home.

3. Jewelery

Good quality gold and silver earrings, rings and bracelets are widely available throughout Peru, with classic Inca-style designs proving popular.

Festivals and events in Peru

Festivals are an important part of Peruvian culture. If you're lucky (or very organized), your trip may coincide with one of these lively fiestas:

1. Virgen de la Candelaria (Virgin of the Candlemas)

The city of Puno celebrates its patron saint with an epic, two-week party each November. Join in the revelry as performers parade the streets in elaborate costumes and masks.

2. Mistura Culinary Festival

Mistura is a massive event held in September where thousands of Peruvians and tourists come together to celebrate the country’s cuisine in Lima.

3. Cusco Inti Raymi (Festival of the Sun)

Every year on June 24, Cusco celebrates the winter solstice with street dances, parades and a re-enactment of the Inca winter solstice festival at the Sacsayhuaman ruins.

4. Carnaval

Each year before Lent cities across Peru host Carnaval celebrations, but the festivities in Cajamarca are known for being the wildest – and wettest. Visitors flock to the city for nine days of dancing, partying, parades and water fights.

Shrouded in mystery, the Nazca Lines is one of the world’s most intriguing archaeological sites. Climb to the viewing platform, or perhaps take a flight over the lines for an epic view.

Dive into learning about the history of the lake and its communities, or simply enjoy the bliss of being immersed in nature.

Cell phone coverage is generally good in Peru’s cities, but may not be available in more remote and mountainous areas. Ensure global roaming is activated with your service provider before leaving home. You could also buy a local SIM card when you arrive.

What's the weather like in Peru?

The weather in Peru differs from region to region with coastal areas experiencing a subtropical desert climate, a tropical climate in the Amazon rainforest and a temperate climate in the Andes (places like Cusco and Arequipa). While varying climates can mean the best time to visit  Peru  changes depending on the region you're visiting; generally, May to October sees consistently dry and sunny days perfect for enjoying the vibrant cities and beautiful landscapes of this  South American  country.

What to wear in Peru

Wearing layers made of natural, breathable fabrics like linen and cotton is a good idea for Peru's varying climates. Merino wool is good for hiking and trekking as it wicks away moisture and regulates body temperature, and lightweight, quick-drying sportswear is a good idea for hot weather.

What are the toilets like in Peru?

Peru has a mix of both squat toilets and western-style flushable toilets. It’s a good idea to carry your own toilet paper and hand sanitizer, as they are not always provided. Some public toilets charge a small usage fee. Expect to use squat toilets if traveling on the Inca Trail.

What kinds of transport will be used in Peru?

Intrepid believes half the fun of experiencing a new country is getting there, and getting around once there! Where possible, Intrepid uses local transport options and traditional modes of transport - which usually carry less of an environmental impact, support small local operators and are much more fun.

Pedal along Lima’s incredible coastline, making your way through local areas and go on a cycling adventure to the epic Sacred Valley.

Spot exotic flowers, birds and mammals while enjoying a canoe ride down the mighty Amazon River.

Will I experience altitude sickness in Peru?

Most people can start to feel the effects of altitude at over 6561 feet (2000 m) regardless of age, gender or fitness level. While our leaders have basic first aid training and are aware of the closest medical facilities, it is very important that you make yourself aware of the cause and effects of traveling at altitude, monitor your health and seek assistance accordingly. It’s important to take it easy, drink plenty of water and speak to your group leader at once if you feel unwell.

We recommend seeing your doctor if you have any health concerns before undertaking the trip. Particularly if you have a pre-existing medical condition or take any medication.

Is Peru a LGBTQI-friendly destination?

While it might be common to see rainbow flags displayed throughout the Andes, this is in fact the flag of the Inca Empire and not a gay pride flag. Peru is a conservative, Catholic country where LGBTQI-rights are still developing. Many members of the LGBTQI community don’t publicly identify themselves and generally Peruvians will tolerate homosexuality on a ‘don’t-ask-don’t-tell’ basis. While Lima may be more tolerant towards LGBTQI-travelers, it’s advised that you should exercise discretion when traveling in country areas.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex   or   ILGA   before you travel.

Does my trip to Peru support The Intrepid Foundation?

Yes, all Intrepid trips support the Intrepid Foundation. In fact, we make a donation on behalf of every traveler. Trips to Peru directly support our foundation partner, Awamaki.

Awamaki empowers indigenous women in Peru with education and job opportunities. They offer lessons in quality control, product development and technical skills training for women artisans in rural Andean communities. Donations from our trips support the growth and development of their programs to lift more women into financial independence.

Intrepid will double the impact by dollar-matching all post-trip donations made to The Intrepid Foundation.

Do I need to purchase travel insurance before traveling?

Absolutely. All passengers traveling with Intrepid are required to purchase travel insurance before the start of their trip. Your travel insurance details will be recorded by your leader on the first day of the trip. Due to the varying nature, availability and cost of health care around the world, travel insurance is very much an essential and necessary part of every journey.

MEALS INCLUDED : Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner

(Please note: alternatively, guests can use this day to further explore the Sacred Valley on their own rather than the bike ride.)

We have an early start today so guests don't miss a moment!

We visit the floating island of Uros by motorboat. These islands were actually handmade using natural reed material by the local Uros people! (see what they look like in the slideshow above) The islands are still inhabited and maintained by these people today.

After checking out the islands, we continue onto Llachon - Santa Maria and prepare for our kayak experience. After a safety briefing, guests are sure to be dazzled as they receive a unique (unbound!) opportunity to paddle alongside Amantani Island and take in the pristine beauty of Lake Titicaca.

Amantani Island is a welcome paradise from the hustle and bustle of daily life. We enjoy a lunch typical of the region and later travel by hike to a temple on the far end of Amantani. Our guests witness a richly hued, stunning sunset; then have a scrumptious dinner and celebrate with new friends with our home stay family. Overnight on Amantani Island.

Once In A Lifetime Vacation!

Walking the Incan Trail, hiking up through the Sun Gate to see the Machu Picchu appear below has been on our bucket list since we met. Cycling at the base of the Andes and kayaking on Lake Titicaca made the tip even more amazing. And spending a night in an adobe with a Quechua family made it an experience we will cherish forever.  The Guides customized every moment to make it a perfect adventure.

Peru: Adventures Unbound

Our small group of 4 intrepid ladies had the most exhilarating time of our lives. We were met at each venue with a knowledgeable guide. The hotel staff were courteous, quickly helping us with our needs and wants. The many restaurants in each of the cities we visited introduced us to delicious Peruvian cuisines. Our whole trip was an exciting adventure with well coordinated timing for each event. Will recommend ROW’s Peru Adventures, to other daring folks who want to depart from their comfort zones.

Amazing adventure

Incredible experience in Peru. All of the details were perfect which, given the complexity of the trip speaks volumes about the company. I will absolutely refer my friends! A+!!!! Trip of a lifetime.

Tour Review: Adventures by Disney’s Peru Tour Is a Riveting Family Adventure

This guided tour from adventures by disney takes travelers to machu picchu, the sacred valley, and cusco..

Christine Sarkis

The Scoop: What to Know About Adventures by Disney

  • My two kids (ages 9 and 10), my husband, and I went on Adventures by Disney Peru tour, which included stops in Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and an amazing day at Machu Picchu.
  • Here’s my honest, candid review of the tour.

Adventures by Disney’s Peru tour brings stories and history to life in Cusco, the Sacred Valley, and Machu Picchu for kids and adult alike. On this physically active eight-day tour, we visited 14 attractions, including archeological sites such as Machu Picchu, the Moray Ruins, and Sacsayhuaman, and it includes other activities like river rafting and a visit to a llama and alpaca farm.

As an Adventures by Disney first-timer, I was impressed that though there was the occasional nod to Disney characters, the real star of the show was Peru and the ancient Inca culture. The company’s Adventure Guides are gifted storytellers, and the tour’s focus on upscale accommodations, seamless service, and access to experiences is what really sets this Adventures by Disney Peru tour apart from others. And the tour was equally geared to kids and adults—in fact, some of the travel groups on my tour were all-adult groups like adult kids and parents, friend groups, and sisters traveling together.

THE SCOOP: What to Know About Adventures by Disney Before You Book

Things to Know About Adventures by Disney’s Peru  Tour

Market in Ollantaytambo on Adventures by Disney Peru tour

  • The tour’s minimum age is six years old but the recommended age is eight, since there are long travel days, elevation changes, and some physically demanding visits (like the stairs at Machu Picchu). Watching different aged kids on the trip (including my own), that recommendation seemed just right. With the time difference, the altitude, the long days, and the walking and climbing, it would be a lot for (most) kids younger than eight.
  • While there are Adult Exclusive departures, the majority of dates are geared toward families. This Adventures by Disney Peru tour is a particularly good fit for families with multiple generations of active travelers. I went with my husband and kids, but could absolutely imagine doing something like this with grandparents as well.
  • Adventure Guides create surprise moments to delight and engage both kids and adults. Think treasure hunts, interactive storytelling, and surprise treats. This was honestly a highlight, and took some of the pressure off of parents since the Adventures Guides played both the role of fun parent (coming up with these delightful surprises) and organized parent (getting everyone to the right place at the right time in a friendly way).
  • Disney characters are included in the pins, on the Junior Adventurer movie night, and in a few other places, but the real Disney focus on this trip is in the service and the storytelling.
  • The Adventure Guides are personable experts who take time for every guest and are experts at keeping everything running smoothly. They also find authentic ways to create connections that turn the group of strangers into a community, and that turns the gaggle of kids into a tight-knit and inclusive group.
  • All included hotels are upscale family-friendly properties, and many have adjoining rooms for more comfortable stays (which, thank you ABD for recognizing how much everyone having a little space at the end of the day is AMAZING for both kids and their adults).
  • Most (but not all) meals are included in the tour price; when meals are not included (for instance, on one of the evenings in Cusco), Adventure Guides are standing by with some great recommendations based on having actually tried the food.
  • This Adventures by Disney Peru tour makes learning about some of the world’s most incredible sights an easy shared experience for adults and kids.

Important Details About Adventures by Disney’s Peru Tour

Itinerary overview.

Though the tour technically starts in Lima, Peru’s capital city is really just the gathering point as guests arrive throughout the first day. Since some flights to Lima arrive early and others late, some guests get a day to explore the city, while others arrive in time for a late dinner and sleep before the tour really gets started on day two, as the group heads back to the airport and boards the one-hour flight to Cusco. We were among the late arrivals and got to the hotel just in time to sleep and wake up in time for the abundant and international buffet breakfast and departure.

From Cusco, small buses take guests to a welcome lunch (where guests get to introduce themselves and formally meet the group) and an interactive (especially for kids) traditional weaving demonstration at the The Centro de Textiles Tradicionales del Cusco (CTTC). Note that this is the highest point in terms of elevation of the whole trip, so making sure to stay hydrated on this afternoon is a big part of managing any feelings of lightheadedness or headache.

PRO TIPS: 5 Things I Wish I Knew Before My First Adventures by Disney Trip

The group then heads to the Sacred Valley, with a stop at a lookout point along the way. After settling in at the hotel in Urubamba that will be the home base for the next four nights, there’s a festive dinner and performance that introduces the culture of the ancient and modern Incas and some of the stories of the Sacred Valley.

In terms of what I observed with my kids, this was the hardest day for them because of the jetlag/altitude combo. But there was enough downtime in transit that they had time to rest between activities. This was also a day when it seemed like the most people needed motion sickness meds, I think because of winding roads but also just the jetlag/altitude combo. I had abundant Bonine (it makes me less sleepy than Dramamine) that worked well.

Junior Adventurers and their Adventure Guide laughing at an outdoor lunch in Ollantaytambo

Day three of the Adventures by Disney Peru tour kicks off with rafting on the Urubamba River followed by a light snack at the end of the rafting trip. From there it’s a short drive back to Ollantaytambo, where the Adventure Guides and kids who want to participate put on a play about the town’s famous Inca archeological site, and then the group climbs to see the ruins before heading to an outdoor lunch.

The picture above is at the lunch. As you can see, this was the point at which all the kids went from acquaintances to best friends, with the Adventure Guides right in the middle of the fun. That evening, kids have dinner and watch a movie with the Adventure Guides while adults have dinner on their own at the hotel. It was lovely to know that the kids were having a great time while my husband and I were having a relaxed and unhurried dinner.

On day four, the group heads up into the mountains to visit the Moray Ruins, an ancient agricultural lab of the Incas. Although this was one of the stops that I was, on paper, less interested in, this was the place I ended up feeling like the stories of the Incas really came to life. It was an incredible place to see firsthand the engineering and science Incas used to improve farming methods and quality of life around its empire.

The morning’s second stop is the beautiful Salt Pans of Maras, where the families of a small town have been collecting and harvesting salt for 500 years. On the way to this sight, there are stops where you can look down upon it and get some amazing pictures. Note that this drive is going to be slightly-to-somewhat challenging for heights-averse travelers, so this is a good time to choose to sit on the left side of the bus, where you’d be exposed to dramatic drops less often.

Kids and adults have the option to head back to the buses and drive back down into the valley or take a two-ish hour hike that’s all downhill but does have some uneven terrain. The hike is beautiful, though, and gives guests the chance to see the salt pans up close. And along the way, the guides keep things fun.

In the afternoon, there’s an optional trip into Urubamba. My husband and kids stayed back at the hotel to swim and relax, but I went and loved it. It was a great glimpse into local life, with stops at the town’s market (the perfect place to score some coffee and chocolate) and an art gallery.

In the evening, kids and adults have parallel fun with a Pisco Sour and cooking demonstration for adults and local fruit juice tasting (and mixing) plus pizza making for kids.

At Machu Picchu, Adventure Guides help kids and adults learn about the mysterious Inca site

Day five is the big Machu Picchu day, and it starts by catching the train from the station in Ollantaytambo. The 90-minute train ride includes beautiful views plus tea and snacks. A bus ride (ABD charters one of the buses that makes the circuit up and down the mountain to Machu Picchu so there’s no standing in line) completes the trip and the group then spends a few hours exploring Machu Picchu with the help of some additional guides (the larger group is divided into smaller groups for the tour of the site).

The switch-back trip up the mountain was slightly challenging for the height-averse among us (I keep mentioning it because I was usually sitting close to my husband, who doesn’t like heights, so I have a good read on where this was an issue.) At the top, you’re delivered to within 50 feet of the entrance, but from there, it’s a trek that includes a lot of stairs to get to the famous view of the site and then down through the complex. The way Machu Picchu tours are now set up is that you follow a route during your time (rather than wandering), so seeing the whole site isn’t a possibility, even if you’re coming as an independent traveler.

All told, we were in Machu Picchu for about three hours. A few people in the group felt it was too little time, and I understood their point. But I thought it felt about right, given that it was part of a bigger trip.

Before heading back down the mountain, the group has a buffet lunch at the Sanctuary Lodge, which is a not-fancy but just-fine restaurant that sits just below the entrance to Machu Picchu. That evening, dinner is at the hotel.

Junior Adventurer feeding an alpaca on Adventures by Disney's Peru tour

On day six of the Adventures by Disney Peru tour, the group packs up and leaves the hotel in Urubamba, stopping at the Pisac Market for local handicrafts and then driving out of the Sacred Valley and going to a llama and alpaca farm where everyone has the chance to interact with (at their own comfort level) Peru’s famous camelids.

From there, the group is dropped off a few blocks from the center of Cusco (there are some rules about where buses can and can’t go in the city center) and walks to the center of town for lunch and a short city familiarization tour on the way to the centrally located hotel. That evening, dinner is on your own, though the guides give great advice and excellent options at every price point are abundant. I was delighted by all of the recommendations the guides gave and thought the meals in Cusco were pretty uniformly excellent.

Day seven, the last full day of the Adventures by Disney Peru tour, starts with a bus ride to the a hill above the city where the Adventure Guides show the group around Sacsayhuaman—an Inca site characterized by 200-ton stones. This was a great example of the guides engaging the kids on the group in a place that might have felt a little uninteresting to kids without some great storytelling and even a little acting.

The walk back down into Cusco is pretty and takes the group through a number of little neighborhoods, and to a music center where the group builds their own pan pipes to take home and learns about some of the region’s musical traditions. There’s some free time (and a great crafts market about a block from the main square) and then the final group dinner at the hotel, which is full of fun surprises.

Route Notes

Adventures by Disney’s Peru tour includes two internal flights (between Cusco and Lima), as well as a number of bus rides on windy roads at high altitudes. As I mentioned above for a number of people on my trip, Bonine or Dramamine was an essential part of some of those drives. There’s also a train ride between Ollantaytambo and the town in the valley below Machu Picchu. And the bus ride from Aguas Calientes (the town below Machu Picchu) to Machu Picchu is up a steep, partially paved switchback road.

Adventures by Disney’s Peru adventure is definitely an active trip, but everything was doable (if slightly challenging) for our entire group, which included both a six-year-old and some older people with stiff joints. There’s river rafting, hiking, and a lot of stair climbing and walking (some of it uneven, since there are a number of trips to ancient ruins). A few people chose to opt out of a few things, but most activities were accessible to most. And the exceptional sights are worth it.

On the majority of the days, breakfast, lunch, and dinner are included in the tour. In general, the only times you’re on your own are in places where options are abundant and easy. At the hotels, large buffets with a wide variety of offerings (plus in some cases a la carte options) are available each day for breakfast.

A mix of buffet and a la carte lunches and dinners are easy to navigate even with food allergies and dietary restrictions . Meals are often private for the group, and take place in beautiful locations. In general, the food is at least good and is often very good. And Adventures by Disney makes a specific effort to include both familiar foods and local specialties.

Hotel Ratings

Kids sit in front of the fireplace at Tambo del Inka resort in Urubamba, Peru

Lima: The Westin Lima is the overnight hotel before guests head back to the airport to fly to Cusco on the second day of the tour. Accommodations are modern and upscale, and the breakfast buffet leans international in scope. The hotel receives 9.1/10 on Kayak , 5/5 on Tripadvisor , and 9/10 on Booking.com .

Urubamba (Sacred Valley):

Adventures by Disney uses two hotels in the Sacred Valley for its Peru tour:

  • Sol y Luna has individual casitas plus restaurants, a spa, and outdoor swimming pool. The resort is rated 5/5 on Tripadvisor and 9.4/10 on Booking.com .
  • Tambo del Inka is used on private departures of the Adventures by Disney Peru tour. The resort has a national park lodge vibe with plenty of large fireplaces and extensive grounds, plus a beautiful half-indoor, half-outdoor pool. Kayak users give the property 9.2/10, Tripadvisor users give the resort a rating of 5/5, and Booking.com rates it 9.5/10.

Cusco: Palacio del Inca is a short (less than 10-minute) walk from Cusco’s central square. It is located in a 500-year-old mansion and has a series of attractive common spaces including a courtyard. This hotel has only a limited number of adjoining rooms (we were not able to get one, so we divided up and had one adult and one kid in each room). Kayak gives the property 9.2 out of 10; Tripadvisor users give the hotel a 5/5 rating; and on Booking.com the property rates 9.2/10.

Who Should (and Shouldn’t) Go on the Adventures by Disney Peru Tour

Multigenerational active travelers will love the variety of bucket-list sights and local immersion experiences, packaged as truly hassle free travel. And though Disney is in the name, Adventures by Disney focuses less on Disney characters and more on the stories of the destination, making it a good fit even for families who are not Disney super-fans.

Anyone who is really sensitive to car sickness or heights is going to struggle a bit at times, but the trip is exceptional and definitely worth just packing the appropriate medications to get through the more challenging transportation moments.

Overall, this Adventures by Disney vacation blended family fun, Incan ruins, and chances to meet and engage with modern people, cultures, and traditions. The Disney standard of excellence was visible everywhere, from the high caliber of guides and the outstanding accommodations to the small surprises built in along the way. Based on this trip, I’d certainly bring my family on another ABD tour.

G Adventures Review : Classic Peru

Hiking the Inca trail has long been on my travel bucket list and having travelled with G Adventures before, I knew I could trust that my G Adventures Classic Peru trip would live up to expectations. And whilst I didn’t end up hiking the Inca trail (instead choosing the Lares Trek,)  I did end up having an amazing trip with G Adventures in Peru.

I wanted to share my experiences with you in this G Adventures Review of the Classic Peru Trip I took in October 2017.

G Adventures Review

Why take a group tour.

For me on this particular trip, it was convenience. I had 10 weeks in order to see 6 countries – no mean feat! I also only had 2 months to plan my 10-week trip and so it was inevitable that my South America Itinerary would include a couple of group tours.

I’d also read lots about South America being a dangerous place to travel and so the thought of travelling with a reputable tour company gave me some comfort and soothed my parent’s anxiety. Turns out travelling in South America is a whole lot safer than the press makes out and travelling solo in South America would have been absolutely fine.

That said I’m still glad I took group tours in South America as it allowed me to achieve a lot in a short time – far more than I would have achieved if I was organising my own transport! And whilst I also love solo travel, sometimes you can’t beat the convenience of a group tour.

I chose to travel Peru with G Adventures because I’ve taken several G Adventures tours in the past and have always been really impressed by their professionalism and ethics. You can read more about why I love G Adventures in this G Adventures Vs Intrepid review . And if you want to read about another G Adventures trip I’ve taken, start with this article about my G Adventures Galapagos budget cruise .

What are the advantages of travelling with G Adventures?

  •  Convenience. No need for hours spent planning the boring aspects of travel such as how to get from A to B. Instead you can focus on the fun stuff like choosing which excursions you want to take!
  • Guaranteed company. No need to worry about eating out alone or hiking on your own and getting lost! You will have a ready-made set of friends who will probably be like-minded. You will have an adventurous spirit in common at the very least! I’ve made some brilliant friends on group adventure tours in the past.
  • Safety. Now whilst travelling in South America is safer than my parents still believe, there will still be inevitable risks. Mostly of theft and petty crime. Travelling in a group where you all watch each other’s backs will help protect you from becoming a victim and will help reassure your family and friends back home that you will return in one piece with all your belonging! Your knowledgeable tour leader can also help to advise you which parts of town are safe and which areas should be avoided!
  • Information. If your guide is anything like the 5 G Adventures guides I’ve travelled with, they will be a fountain of information. From the useful practical things like where to find an ATM to titbits of info about the history, culture and geography of a place.

What are the disadvantages of travelling with G Adventures?

  • As with all group tours, there’s the possibility you won’t get on with your tour group. I find it very unlikely that you won’t find anyone in your group you click with but I guess, in theory, it’s a possibility. That said, on all 5 G Adventures trips that I’ve taken, I’ve had lovely groups and have made friends for life.
  • Whilst the fast pace of a group tour allows you to see a lot of places in a short time, occasionally you may find a place you love and wish you had more time to explore. However, you could always come back again on your own to explore more…
  • Tours are not always the cheapest way to travel. That said, G Adventures is one of the most reasonable tour companies I’ve come across and offers different levels of comfort depending on what you can afford and how you like to travel.

Why I choose G Adventures over other adventure travel companies

  • In my experience, all the tour guides are local to the place you are visiting. This meant they were able to give a greater insight into the local culture and history. I also travelled with Dragoman in South America but whilst I enjoyed the trip and the overlanding style of travel, I was at times, disappointed with our guides lack of knowledge about the local area, probably because they were Brits guiding us around South America! Every tour guide I’ve had with G Adventures (I’ve had 5) has been brilliant and has gone above and beyond to make sure the trip was brilliant for everyone.
  • They have a great cancellation policy. Whilst most tours will keep your money if you back out from a tour and your only option is to claim on your travel insurance , G Adventures will allow you to exchange your trip for one of the same value in the future. Read about their cancellation policy here .
  • G Adventures takes responsible travel seriously. They work closely with the communities they travel within. G Adventures not-for-profit partner company Planeterra ensures that communities benefit from G Adventures operating in that area, supporting ground roots projects. They also make an effort to always use local businesses where they can such as local restaurants rather than chain restaurants. What to expect on a g adventures tour, g adventures accommodation..

This will vary depending on the location and the type of tour. My Galapagos G Adventure trip was actually really luxurious. So was my South East Asia accommodation (probably as hotels were so cheap there!) My South America accommodation was a bit more basic but always comfortable.

G Adventures Food

Some of your meals will be included but most won’t be. Often breakfast is included but lunch and dinner will need to be budgeted for. Often the group finds dinner together but there’s no pressure to if you’d prefer to go off and explore by yourself.

G Adventure Activities

Always check beforehand which G Adventure activities are included and which you will have to pay extra for. Usually there is a mixture. It’s great as it allows you free time to do your own thing on occasion. Check the optional excursions in the trip notes to decide ahead of time where you want to spend your money.

G Adventures Group Size and Ages

G adventures group sizes.

One of the things I love about G Adventure trips is that they keep the group sizes small. Whilst they can have up to 16 people on one trip, I’d say the average is closer to 10-12. Enough people that you’re bound to make at least a few friends but not so many that you start to feel like a herd of cattle being herded from place to place!

On the Classic Peru trip , we started off as a group of 10 but were split into groups of 5 for the Lares trek and Inca Trail depending which trail we chose. We then each had a few extras join our group from another G Adventures tour. We had all become such close friends in a short time that we couldn’t wait to be reunited after our treks and exchanged stories and photos.

What is the Average age on a G Adventures trip?

The average age on a G adventures trip seems to vary a lot depending on which style of tour you choose and which country. Budget trips in South East Asia seem to attract more young people in their early 20’s but in my South America Group, we were aged between 25 and 60 with the average age being about 30-35. If you are a little older and want to increase the chances of travelling with a mixed bunch of ages, go for the mid-budget or comfort trips over the shoestring ones.

But regardless of how old the members of your G Adventures team are, you can almost guarantee everyone will be young at heart and keen for an adventure!

Can I go on a G Adventures Trip Alone?

Most people who join these trips are on their own so it’s great for singles and solo travellers. Sometimes people do come in couples or pairs but if you travel alone, you will be paired with someone the same gender and a similar age to share a room so you won’t have to incur a single supplement. If having a room to yourself is important, you can usually opt to have your own room at an extra cost. this is not always available on boat trips or camping sections of the trip.

How to Budget for a G Adventures Tour

The good thing about a G Adventures trip is that you know your transport and accommodation is covered so you only need to budget for food and activities, therefore its easier to manage your money on the road.

On a typical G Adventures trip, breakfast is included in most hotels but very few lunches or dinners are unless specifically mentioned in the trip brochure. Therefore this will need to be factored into your budget.

Flights are not included and so this will be your biggest outlay on top of the G Adventures trip cost.

Usually, there will be some tours and activities included in the price of the trip. Additional excursions are often mentioned in the full trip itinerary along with costs and so it’s easy to help you budget for your G Adventures trip.

Other costs to consider are immunisations, malaria medication, drinking water and taxis.

Classic Peru G Adventures Review

What to expect on the g adventures classic peru tour.

We started our G Adventures Classic Peru trip in Lima. I arrived late at night so didn’t get much chance to explore. From what my trip mates have told me, Lima is nice enough but you don’t need to allow a lot of time to explore. There are other much better places in Peru more worthy of your time and money.

Lake Titicaca

The following morning, we hopped on a domestic flight together to reach Puno on the shores of Lake Titicaca . We used this as a base for exploring this high altitude city and the beautiful Lake Titicaca .

Included in the cost of this tour, was an overnight Lake Titicaca trip where we visited the floating islands of Uros (islands and homes made entirely of river weeds,) visited a village on the Taquile Islands and then stayed at a homestay in an island on the shores of the lake.

The homestay was a brilliant way to experience ‘real life’ and we were welcomed warmly into our host’s homes. Whilst they spoke little English and our Spanish was not brilliant, we found ways to communicate and this homestay was one of my trip highlights. We played with the children, ate delicious home cooked food, showed our families pictures from back home and in the mornings we helped our families with jobs around the farm.

Read more about visiting Lake Titicaca here .

Cusco and The Sacred Valley

From Puno, we travelled north to Cusco, a beautiful city nestled in the Peruvian mountains. By now, our altitude sickness was settling and we enjoyed wandering the markets and the churches of Cusco before a day trip to see The Sacred Valley. You have to see The Sacred Valley to believe it! We climbed to the top of the Ollytambo ruins and were rewarded with beautiful views in every direction.

We also visited local Planeterra project such as the women’s weaving initiative at the Ccaccaccollo community centre where we learnt how the super soft alpaca wool was weaved into beautiful products such as jumpers and scarves and we stocked up on Christmas gifts for our families back home.

Lunch was at the Parwa Community Restaurant, another local business supported by G Adventures and some of the best food I tasted my entire trip.

The Inca Trail or Lares Trek

The next stop for us was the start of our trek into the Andean Mountains. For me, this was the Lares trek .

For many, the question at this point is whether to choose the Lares trek or the Inca trail. In truth, either trek is fantastic and I’m sure you’ll have no regrets whichever you choose. Half our group did the Inca trail and half chose the Lares trek.

Did you know G Adventures has actually won an award for being the best inca trail tour provider? You can read more about that by clicking  here .

A few things you should know before choosing;

  • The Inca Trail requires a permit and sometimes these need to be obtained up to 6 months in advance.
  • The Lares trek will not take you right to Macchu Pichu, you will need to take the scenic railway to Aguas Calientes where you will stay overnight and visit Machu Pichu in the morning. The downside is that you don’t get your first glimpse of Machu Pichu from the sun gate but the upside is that you are showered and well rested to enjoy the Inca Ruins and spectacular scenery fully.
  • The Inca Trail gets busy and the campsites are large. If you are looking for peace and quiet, choose the Lares Trek, we barely saw another human except for a few farmers and children.
  • The Lares Trek goes to a higher altitude than The Inca Trail but is shorter – 3 days versus 4.
  • Nothing can quite prepare you for your first sighting of Machu Pichu, it is truly beautiful.

I can personally recommend the Lares Trek – it was one of my favourite experiences in South America to date. The views were stunning, the peace and quiet refreshing, the achievement satisfying. I have heard just as positive things about the Inca Trail so whichever you choose, it is likely to be something you will remember for a very long time.

Back to Cusco

You will then a have a few days in Cusco before the trip finishes. Take a trip to the multicoloured Rainbow Mountain or go horse riding or quad biking nearby Cusco or spend time wandering the quaint city. Sadly, I got sick and spent most of my time in my hotel room! But Cusco, I will be back..!

From Cusco, I flew to La Paz and travelled through Bolivia, Chile, Argentina and Brazil. You can read about my   South America Route here .

In Conclusion…

If you are visiting Peru and planning to do either the Lares trek or Inca Trail, you should definitely consider the Classic Peru trip with G Adventures . As you may have realised by reading other articles of mine, I am a huge fan of G Adventures. All opinions are my own and this trip was paid for in full by myself. I hope you’ve found this review of G Adventures ‘Classic Peru’ useful and I’m sure if you choose to take the trip with G Adventures, you will have the most wonderful trip.

I have not made it to Peru yet but when I do go I would love to do a group tour like this. Seeing Machu Pichu is definitely on my bucket list, I just need to make sure my knee is strong enough to be able to do the hike.

I have a knee problem too and a dodgy back! But we took our time and I made sure to take regular anti inflammatories which helped! You’ll love it ?

That’s very encouraging

I would definitely recommend taking 2 walking poles – they made a huge difference. And lares would be easier than inca trail with bad knees as no steps only hills

Great! I would love to visit Peru!

I have been thinking about booking a tour with G Adventures for a while now. Thank you for sharing such a comprehensive review of your experience!

I highly recommend them! Intrepid are good too but I think g adventures are my favourite

Thank you so so much for such a thorough review! This is so helpful! I’m definitely interested in booking this!

Great post. I had a look at their website recently and really liked the concept. Thanks for sharing

They are a great company. Which tour were you thinking to take?
