Staropramen Brewery Tour: A Comprehensive Guide to Prague’s Iconic Brewery (2024)

Food & Drink · Places to Visit

Staropramen Brewery Tour: A Comprehensive Guide to Prague’s Iconic Brewery (2023), including types of beer, ticket prices and how to get there from the centre of Prague.

If you’re a beer lover, there’s no better place to visit than the Staropramen brewery in Prague. With over 150 years of history, this brewery is one of the oldest and most respected in the Czech Republic. A visit to the Staropramen brewery is not only a chance to taste some of the best beer in the world, but also an opportunity to learn about the brewing process and the rich tradition of Czech beer-making. The brewery is located fairly close to Prague’s centre and makes a great indoor activity for 2-3 hrs.

In this blog post, I will take a closer look at what it’s like to visit the Staropramen brewery and why it’s a must-see destination for beer enthusiasts visiting Prague. I’ll also include my personal experience of visiting the brewery and a few extra insider tips if you want to follow the beer brewing trail in Prague and Czech Republic.

Introducing the Staropramen Brewery

Founded in 1869, the Staropramen brewery is the largest in Prague and the second largest in the Czech Republic. It uses the unique Saaz Hops (mainly from the Zatec hop growing region ) and you can smell the sweet smell of malt brewing when you walk anywhere around Smichov area. The brewery started to export in 1953 and now supplies beer to over 37 different countries around the world. The word “Staropramen” means “old spring”.

Is Staropramen brewery worth visiting?

If you are interested in the history of beer making and you like drinking and tasting different types of beer then the Staropramen brewery is definitely worth visiting. It is the only traditional brewery in Prague that’s open to the public and you get to see where the beer is actually being made. The tour itself is reasonably priced, but if you are travelling to Prague on a tight budget, you can also just visit the entrance and the bar area (which is decorated in the late 19th-century style with old-fashioned advertisements, where you can buy a beer and enjoy the atmosphere).

If you are deciding between visiting the new Pilsen Beer Experience (close to Wenceslas Square) or the Staropramen Brewery, then the Staropramen Brewery is more authentic; because that’s where the beer is actually brewed – you can smell it and you can also walk around the buildings to get an idea how huge the whole complex is. The Pilsen Beer Experience is also much more expensive – tickets start from 500 CZK.

However, if you do have an extra day in Prague, it’s totally worth visiting the actual Pilsen Brewery and do a real tour of the brewery in Pilzen. The historic Pilzen town is also great and only 60 minutes by a fast train from the Main Train Station, so it makes a great day trip from Prague.

If you are interested in learning more about hops and beer brewing, Zatec is also only 60 minutes by bus from Prague and you can visit the largest brewing museum, sample the local beer and fully appreciate the idea of why the hop-growing town got accepted into the UNESCO list of places in Czech Republic in 2023.

What to expect when visiting

The Staropramen Visitor Center was opened in 2000 as part of the Staropramen Brewery complex. The museum takes you through the history of Staropramen from its founding in 1869 to the present day. It describes the gradual modernisation of beer production and how the brewery works on a day-to-day basis.

The story is told by the most significant figure in the history of Staropramen, the head brewer Josef Paspa. Under his leadership, Staropramen became the largest brewery in the former Czechoslovakia. In the exhibition, you can see many elements from the original brewery, including original brass mixing vats and a Tatra delivery truck that Staropramen used to deliver to customers in the 1930s. In the brewery, you go through the brewing process step by step until you arrive at the beer-tasting bar. No surprise there!

The tour ends with a beer tasting at the Staropramen bar, whose design reflects the rich tradition of Czech pubs, including old wooden tables, brass railings, and other accessories that you can find in the most popular Prague pubs. The beer is served in custom-made handmade glasses by Czech glassmakers. You can choose between lager, dark beer, and the Granát beer speciality, all of which are among the best-selling beers.

New Staropramen Ambassador

In 2023, Hollywood star Orlando Bloom became the new ambassador of Staropramen. Bloom spent several years in Prague filming the series Carnival Row and fell in love with the city and Czech beer.

Insider Tip

Not a lot of people know this, but you can visit the Staropramen bar without doing the museum and brewery tour. This is great if you are short of time (or not that interested in the history) and still want to sample the beer and enjoy the atmosphere of an old-fashioned Czech pub with a retro design.

You can buy the beer in 0.5 litres (from 65 CZK) or buy the tasting beer menu in 0.2 glasses (4 beers 160 CZK or 6 beers 200 CZK). This is a super good value, since you get to taste 6 different beers for the price of about one and a half at a restaurant at the Old Town Square.

The bar also serves a simple pub menu, such as pickled cheese, fried cheese, beer goulash or sausages pickled in beer.

staropramen brewery tour tickets

What beer can you taste at the Staropramen Brewery?

The beer tasting that’s included in the tour is 0.2 litre of each type of beer (depending on what type of ticket you have). On top of that, you can also taste any of the other beers offered on tap. The prices I’ve included in this list are 0.5 litre per beer.

STAROPRAMEN LEŽÁK NEPASTER Traditional light lager made since 1869 with Czech and German hops, which gives a pleasant bitter taste and aroma. Price: 65 CZK

STAROPRAMEN NEFILTR Characteristically unfiltered, it combines the tradition of Czech lager with German wheat beer and Belgian apple and coriander extract. Price: 65 CZK

STAROPRAMEN GRANÁT A polished semi-dark lager with a garnet colour, which is given by a combination of light, Bavarian and caramel malt. Made using the original 1884 recipe. Price: 65 CZK

STAROPRAMEN ČERNÝ Dark Bavarian-style lager with a full sweet caramel flavour and a gentle hop bitterness. Price: 65 CZK

BLUE MOON Belgian-style wheat beer with a touch of orange peel and coriander to enhance the flavour. Price: 65 CZK

SPECIÁL Selection of brewers, a different beer on tap every month. Price: 65 CZK

What is the alcohol percentage of Staropramen beer?

The alcohol percentage of Staropramen beer varies depending on the type of beer. The classic Staropramen Lager has an alcohol percentage of 5%, while the Staropramen Granat has an alcohol percentage of 4.8%. You can also taste the Staropramen version of non-alcoholic beer, which has all the taste, but no alcohol.

Is Staropramen beer available in the USA, UK and abroad?

Yes, Staropramen beer is available in the USA, UK and widely abroad. It can be found in select speciality beer stores and online retailers. However, availability may vary depending on location.

Who is the Staropramen Brewery Tour best for?

The museum and the tasting part are best for those over 18. It’s legal to drink alcohol in Czech Republic from the 18th birthday, but if you are lucky enough to look less than 18, you should carry with you an official ID – student card with a photo or your passport.

How to get to Staropramen Brewery from centre of PRague

The Staropramen Brewery is very close to the centre of Prague – no less than 15 minutes by tram or 10 minutes by underground. The building is within walking distance (5 minutes) from the Andel Underground Station on line B. If you get off at the side that says ‘ Na Knizeci’ you will walk out of the underground right in front of the brewery building.

Alternatively, you can also get a tram from the centre – number 12, 20, 5 stop right in front of the building and the stop is called ‘Na Knizeci’. Any tram (e.g. 9, 10,15, 16) that stops at Andel will be also close enough for you to walk to the brewery.

Opening Times

Tuesday – Saturday 10 am – 6 pm (closed on Sundays and Mondays) all year round. The English tour is at 1 pm every day, plus there are extra tours in Czech, Russian and German language.

Entrance Fee

The ticket prices are based on how many beers you’d like to taste at the end of your visit to the museum and the brewery. The cheapest ticket includes only one beer and is 249 CZK for adults, 219 CZK for students or seniors (without drink) for 99 CZK.

Children are allowed in the brewery and museum, but of course, won’t be served any alcohol (there are different soft drinks on offer at the bar). Tickets for children under 7 years old are free and under 13 years 99 CZK and for under 26 years 169 CZK.

The most expensive version of the ticket is the museum/brewery plus 6 types of Staropramen Beer for 339 CZK, which I think is a great deal (especially if you know that the restaurants at the Old Town Square will charge up to 150 CZK for one beer (1/2 litre – about a pint). The beer tastings are smaller than 1/2 litre each, but it still makes it a great value.

staropramen brewery tour tickets

Where to get tickets

You can buy tickets directly at the brewery entrance as you walk in or you can pre-book via the brewery’s official website (www.centrumstaropramen.cz). On Fridays and Saturdays, I would recommend pre-booking if you want to get in at a particular time because the brewery is very popular with stag tours and it’s a lot busier with regular tourists too.

Best time to visit

If you want to avoid the crowds and the stag parties, the best time to visit is on Tuesday, Wednesday or Thursday.

How much time to allow for your visit

When I visited last time, I spent about 2 hrs at the Staropramen Brewery. The brewery tour takes approximately 50 minutes, but you will need extra time to enjoy your beer tasting at the end of the tour (depending on how many beers you have as a part of your ticket). You can also buy individual beers to try once you finish your beer tasting.

Refreshments

You can order more beer and pub snacks and simple pub food at the bar.

There are free toilets available as you walk into the visitor’s centre.

The visitor’s centre also has many Staropramen-related souvenirs for you to tempt you with and to suit all budgets.

Can I do this independently or do I need a guided tour to visit

You can definitely do the tour or visit the Staropramen Brewery on your own. Everyone is super friendly and speaks English and you can easily buy your ticket to the museum when you get there. The museum has everything explained both in Czech and English language and every day at 1 pm you can join the English-speaking tour if you prefer. Getting to the brewery is also easy from the centre of Prague (just check out my notes above)

Things to do around the Staropramen Brewery

  • Explore the independent pubs and coffee places along the Lidicka Ulice, including independent local microbrewery ‘Andelsky Pivovar’ or ‘Kozlovna’ where you can taste all the Kozel range of beers.
  • Traditional Prague Farmer’s markets at Andel Underground Station (Fridays) or Naplavka opposite Vltava Riverbank under the Vysehrad Castle (Saturdays)
  • Hidden bars, restaurants and gallery at Smichovska Naplavka at Vltava River (5 minutes walk from the Staropramen Brewery)

Staropramen Brewery

Staropramen Brewery

With the growth of industrialization that enveloped Prague in the late 1800’s, a large population of workers thirsty for a refreshing beverage after a hard day’s work set the stage for the foundation of Staropramen. Today, Staropramen remains one of the most recognizable, widely distributed Czech lagers, filling super-market shelves and pub taps across the world. Naturally, visiting their new Visitors Center and learning a bit about this Prague lager tops the list of things to do when in Prague.

social media icons

When you decide to take a Staropramen tour , your experience will take place in the Staropramen Visitors Center . Located within their brewery complex on Nádražní street in Smíchov, this newly built, high tech Visitors Center is more of an exhibition about Staropramen beer than a tour. Lasting about 35 minutes , you walk through about 4 rooms, beginning with facts about the founding of Staropramen, the brewing process, and lastly bottling and shipping. To make the tour dynamic, there are swiftly appearing videos, a wide range of sound effects, holograms, and all sorts memorabilia to catch your interest. The character of Josef Paspa , the famous brewer who modernized Staropramen’s brewing process, essentially becomes your tour guide, popping up through the exhibition and delivering facts in a grandfather-like voice.

In the first room, you’ll have a chance to learn about the historical foundation of Staropramen. Next, you meet Josef Paspa, the legendary brewer, and see the brewmaster’s office. The 3rd room is where the process of brewing is explained, as well as some basic info about the ingredients used. In this room, there are copper mashers and kettles, as well as some samples of ingredients like hops and barley. The facts about beer brewing are delivered in an easy to understand manner, which is also informative. Lastly, you’ll see the beer production line and learn about beer shipping logistics.

Overall, this tour is an informative experience. All the information is easily understood, and not heavy with beer making jargon. One disadvantage is that the tour is timed. If you’re too slow, or want to have a second look, the lights fade out when it’s time to move on. To clarify, during this tour, you do not enter the brewery itself. This is more of an educational exhibition in Staropramen’s Visitors Center.

Possibly the most enjoyable part of the tour is the end- which involves you choosing which mug of Staropramen’s brew you’d like to sip in their very classy Visitor Center’s pub. This pub serves the best Staropramen in all of the city , in a new, but still traditional Czech pub. Decorated with old memorabilia, and manned by knowledgable and talented staff, all the Staropramen beers are on tap. This beer is also included in the price of your ticket.

There are plenty of accommodation options in Prague, and quite a few hotels are located around the Staropramen brewery, in the neighborhoods of Anděl and Smíchov. However, Smíchov is in general not the the nicest of neighborhoods to stay in.

Restaurant/Pub

Staropramen’s in-house brewery restaurant, Na Verandách is a contemporary Czech pub with all of Staropramen’s beers on tap. Serving traditional Czech cuisine, as well more continental European dishes, this large restaurant is a member of the Potrefená Husa restaurant chain, which you can find all over Prague and the Czech Republic. The quality of food at Na Verandách, like all Potrefená Husa restaurants, is decent, but not exceptional. The portions tend to be on the smaller size, and the prices are more than the average Czech restaurant. Their menu is quite diverse- almost anyone can find something to suit their tastes. For a beer snack, they’ve got appetizers like fried stuffed peppers, chicken wings, and Czech classics like nakládaný hermelín. For main courses, they serve goulash, svíčková (beef in a cream sauce), traditional Czech duck, as well as pasta dishes and salads. Well staffed, the service is quick, but sometimes a bit cold. With over 200 seats, there is a smoking as well as non-smoking section, and a pleasant garden in the summer.

Staropramen Brewery and visitors center are located on Nádražní street, and the closest tram stop is Na Knížecí. One stop from the metro station Anděl, take trams 6, 20, 14, or 12. The entrance of the visitors center is on Pivovarská street, which is perpendicular to Nádražní street.

The Czechs claim that their beer is the best globally, and we may have to agree. Reasons are,

The Czechs invented the Pilsner. The country also has a rich brewing history that started way back in the 6th century. Many Czech breweries also practice decoction mashing. Staropramen Brewery

More of a museum visit than an actual brewery tour, the presentation here focuses on the 100-plus years of history of the brewery, the only big nationwide Czech brewer based in Prague. The reward for your time is a glass of Staropramen at the end. See the website or check tour times on the door. English tours are normally conducted at 10am, 1pm and 4pm, though the times can differ by the day.

The brewery where one of the most famous Czech beer brands is produced opens to visitors in several ways. Besides the popular audio-visual tour of the brewery history and beer production, including tasting, you can also visit the Staropramen brewery for concerts and other social events. Czech rock and rap bands play increasingly often at the complex; sometimes famous international bands are invited. Billy Talent appeared at Staropramen for example. You can find all the latest news on the Facebook page.

The complex also includes the modern Potrefená husa pub and restaurant, a successful dining concept that Staropramen has been developing since the 1990s in Prague and other larger cities in the Czech Republic.

Hugely popular are the open days, when entry to Staropramen is free and to the live music in the courtyard. In summer, other fun events such as Czech Beer Days, which showcases card games and other traditions, take place at Staropramen. The brewery also hosts the Food Rocks street food festival.

  • Combemaid 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Excellent Prague walking tour Brilliant walking tour of Prague! Katie was our tour guide. She is a brilliant ambassador for her city. So knowledgeable. Speaks perfect English, so is easy to understand. We walked miles, so is not for the infirm. We saw all the main sights. A ride on a tram, a boat ride at the end. Mid tour we were taken to a restaurant in the old Square by the astronomical clock. Our lunch was superb! We chose the beef ghoulish, fabulous! You also get beer or wine. I absolutely loved this tour, the history and sights, I don’t think we would have got to see on our own. There were a few that seemed totally disinterested and looked bored, so why bother? If you don’t like history and listening to talks and walking don’t go on it. We were a small group about 17 in all and all became very friendly. This is the tour to go on if you have 6 or 7 hours to spare. You won’t regret it. Read more Written March 22, 2024

Only one issue when booking it did not give me the options for a couples table so we were squashed on an 8 seater. It was lots of fun but so cramped that we could hardly eat - and there were plenty of empty spaces elsewhere that they could have spread people out a bit. Other than that it is a great event, the food was really well presented and the service and entertainment was really good. Read more Written March 22, 2024

Our tour guide was so incredibly knowledgeable about the history of the country; she (Marketa) was so interesting, and embellished her narrative with historical pictures and anecdotes. HOWEVER, this walking tour was grueling. We walked from 10 a m. Until 2:30 p.m. without a break. Finally stopped for lunch at 2:30 p m. Half of our group dropped out after lunch. The city is beautiful, and we saw so many incredible things, but you must be prepared to walk A LOT! Read more Written March 22, 2024

Brewery visit to Prague: Staropramen

One of the largest breweries in the Czech Republic is located in Prague. Staropramen beer is brewed here. We took part in a tour of the Visitor Centre, followed by a beer tasting.

Prag - auf dem Weg zur Staropramen Brauerei

In the early afternoon we could take part in a German speaking tour in the Staropramen Visitor Centre. We waited in the lobby until 5 minutes before the tour started. When the ticket office opened and we could pick up our reserved tickets. Guided tours are offered here every 30 minutes. Some of them also in English and German. Normally a maximum of 30 people per tour take part – we were the only participants!

Prag Besucherzentrum Staropramen

Tour of the visitor centre

With our admission ticket we passed a turnstile and from that moment on the tour was fully automated. Lights and announcements guided us through the different rooms and indicated monitors / multimedia stations. Due to the relatively tight time frame between the guided tours, you will sometimes “rudely” pushed out of a room by the lights going out. I was quite happy that we were not prevented by 28 other people from trying out or reading something. I can imagine that can sometimes be a tight schedule when the groups are very active.

Rundgang im Besucherzentrum

What do you learn on the tour?

First of all you will learn about the history of the brewery. The brewery was founded in Prague as early as 1869. The engineer Gustav Noback designed a brewery that was highly modern for those times. In 1871 the brewing started there and since 1911 the brand name “Staropramen” has been registered. The translation of Staropramen literally means “old source”.

After the Second World War the company was nationalised and only after the collapse of the Eastern Bloc could the company be converted back into a public limited company with the help of foreign investors in 1989. Today Staropramen is the third largest Czech beer exporter. The beer is supplied to 37 countries, but the export is mainly to America and the EU.

Biersorten Staropramen

Of course you will also learn in detail how to brew beer. The brewing process is presented very clearly and comprehensibly in multimedia presentations. Also impressive are the huge copper kettles, which can be seen here as illustrative objects.

A mini bottling line and the accompanying film very clearly demonstrate how the beer is filled and packaged. From there, you can enter a room where you can follow the beer’s journey to a particular country. You select the country of your choice and a short film is shown. The tour lasts a maximum of 30 minutes, after which you leave the exhibition rooms via a spiral staircase.

Braukessel

Staropramen beer tasting

At the end of the spiral staircase you will find the “Staropramen” pub. Here you will find the fan shop and the possibility to drink a freshly tapped beer and eat something.

Our visitor pact included a beer sample. The table was already prepared and we were expected.

Biertasting Staropramen

Four beer coasters were lying in front of us, on each of them we put the matching beer. I find these coasters very clever. Not only the name of the beer was written here, but also colour, alcohol content, number of malts and when this beer was first brewed. After a short explanation we start with our tasting.

Staropramen Premium

Premium pale lager is the beer with the oldest recipe in the brewery. It has been brewed unchanged since 1871. Bohemian and Bavarian malt and hops from the Žatec region are used. The alcohol content is 5%.

Staropramen Premium

The beer tastes slightly malty and has a pleasant hop note. Only later does one notice the bitterness of the bottom-fermented Pils. I like the beer quite well, but it is nothing too outstanding among the various beers I have drunk so far.

dunkles Staropramen Bier Prag

Staropramen Černý Ležák

The recipe for the dark beer with the alcohol content of 4.4% is still quite young. It was brewed for the first time only in 1997. Four different types of malt are used for the beer: Bohemian malt, Bavarian malt, caramelised malt and coloured malt.

The beer tastes very soft and full-bodied. It almost flatters the palate and is definitely one of my favourites at this tasting.

Staropramen Granát

Staropramen Granát is a semi-dark lager with a beautiful ruby red colour. This beer also has a lot of tradition in the brewery. It was first brewed in 1884. With its alcohol content of 5.5%, it is the strongest beer in the tasting. However, I find that you don’t really notice it. The beer is brewed from three types of malt (Bohemian, Bavarian and caramelised malt) and is triple hopped.

Staropramen Granat

The beer tastes full-bodied, the hops are mildly bitter.

Staropramen ungefiltert

Staropramen Nefiltrovaný

The most surprising beer for me is the unfiltered pale beer. The recipe was first introduced to the market in 2011. The brewer uses Czech malt and wheat malt for the beer. The beer has an alcohol content of 5.0%. The recipe also contains added apple extract.

I like the taste, it’s a pity that this beer is not on sale in Germany.

We were able to take a lot of time during the beer tasting and also had nice conversations with the employees about beer. Even after us there were hardly any guests in the visitor centre and so we could enjoy our stay in peace.

Brauereibesuch in Prag

Pivovarská 9 150 00 Praha 5 Webseite

The visit to the Visitor Centre was made possible for us free of charge by the Czech National Tourist Board – CzechTourism in Berlin. Many thanks!
