The Dead South

With banjo, mandolin, cello and guitar, The Dead South certainly look the part of bluegrass traditionalists. But, as outsiders to the bluegrass world by circumstances of geography, they’re from the Canadian prairies, and by influences, equal parts finger-picking and punk, there are few comparisons to be made for the four-piece acoustic band. With a global following sparked by YouTube, early success in German rock clubs and now, sold out shows at iconic venues in many continents, this is no country for old-time string purists.

A brotherhood first and foremost, formed in university and forged on the road, The Dead South are quite comfortable in their role as a total anomaly most everywhere they go. Their progressive, tightly-constructed approach to acoustic music that favours intricate solos and harmonies has brought two JUNO Awards for Traditional Album of the Year, the most recent for the Muscle Shoals-made Sugar & Joy (2019). The Dead South followed up in 2020 with Served Live , a double live album that celebrated and supported the live music industry in a time of crisis.

With their newly-released double EPs Easy Listening for Jerks, Parts I & II , The Dead South find their own balance between their punk origins and the bluegrass world of their sound. A strong statement about identity, influence and inspiration, the new EPs show a band stepping out into new musical territory while also staying true to themselves.

The Deep South Adventure Tour: Brand New for 2023!

Brand new to the coyote trip in 2023, the deep south adventure tour is our unmissable new adventure. taking in louisiana, alabama, georgia, and tennessee on a whirlwind 8-day journey, the deep south tour provides you with the perfect combination of tourist destination highlights and off-the-beaten track local experiences.  .

Here’s a selection of some of the adventures that await you!

Food & Fun in New Orleans

New Orleans is synonymous with many things: bourbon, jazz, pastries. The good news is, the Deep South Adventure Tour gives you a chance to get a taste of all of this. You’ll eat po’boys (roast beef or fried shrimp, the choice is yours!) as you wander the streets, and you’ll lick the sugar from the breakfast beignets off your fingers as you set off for a day’s exploring. You’ll head down to Bourbon Street, where your Adventure Leader will take you on a rip-roaring bar-hop. And then, when you think you might need to dance a bit of the food off, we’ll take you to Frenchmen Street, where you can boogie the night away with some live music.

A Steamboat Jazz Cruise on the Mississippi

The steamboat is an iconic, enduring image of an America from a time gone by, but on this adventure with The Coyote Trip, you’ll board a bit of history and explore the Mississippi River. You’ll be able to see the sights from the water – and while you take it all in, jazz music gives you the true taste of New Orleans life.

Walking Tours in Montgomery & Atlanta

Sometimes, the best way to see the sights of a brand new city is also the cheapest – on your own feet! Our Deep South Adventure Tour takes you on two informative, fun, explorative walking tours that will show you the best that these cities have to offer. First in Montgomery, you’ll take the ‘Capital of Contradictions’ tour, where you’ll stroll past some of the key historical sites in a city often overlooked for its contribution to US history.

Then, once you’re in Atlanta, Georgia, you’ll embark on the ‘Steps of Giants’ walking tour. Here, you’ll visit some of the key locations related to America’s fight for civil rights – including a reflective trip to the grave of Martin Luther King, Jr.

Montgomery - Deep South Adventure Tour

Country Line-Dancing in Nashville

Have you ever wondered how to grapevine and scoot? Does country music get your toe tapping, but you don’t know how to brush and kick in time? On this tour, that’s all about to change, as you’re put through your paces in a bona-fida country dance class ! Once you’ve worked up an appetite, we’ll take you Hattie B’s Hot Chicken, and then you’re ready to show off what you’ve learned as we hit the Honky Tonk Highway .

Day 1 UK to Atlanta

Day 2 atlanta - nashville, day 3 nashville.

We've a fabulous music themed day in store for you today. It begins as you step inside the hallowed halls of Studio B, which became famous in the 1960s for its part in the Nashville Sound. Here, more than 35,000 songs have been recorded by artists including Elvis Presley, and you'll step inside the studio where he recorded Are You Lonesome Tonight As the lights are dimmed, just as they would have been for the King of Rock 'n' Roll, and you hear his incredible voice flowing from the speakers, you will be sharing a truly special moment. To round off the day you'll visit the Country Music Hall of Fame.

There's one more exciting experience to come if you choose to join an optional excursion, an evening of live music at the Grand Ole Opry. This is one of the most important venues for live country music in the world.

Day 4 Memphis

The next great musical city you'll visit is Memphis, standing proudly on the bluffs of the Mississippi River. On arrival in the afternoon, we're going to set off together to discover some of its many highlights. They include the Riverfront and Beale Street, the home of the blues. On this iconic street, music emanates from every open door, and street performers entertain the crowds.

Day 5 Memphis

Memphis is synonymous with Elvis Presley, and today we're going to find out about this connection. Our first visit is to Sun Studios, where the 'King of Rock 'n' Roll' made his first recordings back in 1954. This is followed by Graceland, where we'll take a fascinating guided tour of the opulent mansion that was his home from 1957 until his death in 1977. Here you can fully immerse yourself in his life and career as you go back to his roots. You'll see the living room, kitchen, TV room, pool room and the famous Jungle Room among other highlights. The tour ends at the Meditation Garden, where Elvis is buried alongside his parents. This is sure to be a wonderful highlight of your holiday, and there's more to come tomorrow.

Day 6 Memphis

Today has been left free for you to explore more of Memphis at leisure. Maybe you'll choose to visit one of the city's fascinating museums, which include the National Civil Rights Museum and the Slave Haven Underground Railroad Museum. Alternatively, if you enjoyed your visit to Graceland yesterday, today's optional excursion is sure to be tempting. Why not come with us to Tupelo, where you'll see the house where Elvis was born. You'll also get to visit a fantastic museum displaying one of the most remarkable collections of Elvis memorabilia in the world.

Day 7 Vicksburg

Day 8 natchez - new orleans.

As we head deeper south we're going to make a stop today in Natchez, a historic river town on the banks of the Mississippi. This laid back destination is filled with grand mansions and we’ll visit one today to learn about southern life in the “antebellum” period, before the civil war. Our ultimate destination is the 'Big Easy', or New Orleans, home to another musical genre & jazz. Your hotel here is just steps from the famous French Quarter. This is the oldest district and the cultural hub of the city, so you're well placed to make your own discoveries. We'll explore New Orleans' highlights on an included tour this afternoon. As we drive around the city we'll see St Louis Cathedral and cemeteries full of above-the-ground tombs, known as Cities of the Dead.

Day 9 New Orleans

Your day begins with a walking tour of the French Quarter, taking in Jackson Square, Pirate's Alley and the world-famous Bourbon Street. We'll end our walk at a restaurant for a buffet brunch accompanied by live jazz music, which is served in a pretty outdoor courtyard in the French Quarter. The rest of the day is all yours to explore the galleries and boutiques of the French Quarter, or join an optional Louisiana swamp and bayou tour.

Day 10 New Orleans

With so much to discover in New Orleans you can spend the day exploring at your own pace,. However, if you're still keen to discover more, your Holiday Director is hosting an afternoon optional trip on an authentic paddle steamer. Once the only way to travel along the waterways of the South, this trip will take you on a glorious journey back to the 19th century heyday of these iconic vessels.

Day 11 New Orleans/UK

Today we'll transfer you to the airport for your return flight to the UK.

You'll arrive back in the UK today.

Brilliant to see the south again, fabulous evening, love the venue, feels up close and personal, great songs including some new ones that I’ve not heard before - it’s a PERFECT 10

The South formed back in 1988 under the name of 'The Beautiful South' and have still been doing well touring around the UK. They had several hit singles, my favourite one being their song 'Perfect 10' as well as their number 1 single 'A Little Time'. After a successful career, which included 15 million record sales and ten albums, some of the members thought it was time to quit. But not everyone was ready to leave it behind, Dave Hemingway, Ali Wheeler and Paul Heaton decided to carry on and renamed themselves 'The South'. With more members joining their new band they got to work on releasing more singles and touring together, gathering a good group of loyal fans along the way. In 2013 they released their album 'Sweet Refrains' and went on to do another successful UK tour, selling out many venues. Although they lost the beautiful part of them they still have a lot to give, their live shows provide an electric feeling that could get any venue, whether small or large dancing along with them. I can't say their outfits or their songs are particularly modern in my opinion, but their performance, with well-planned lighting and the enthusiasm they have on stage becomes infectious and made me want to hear more even as the last song was finished.

Come down and join us!

The St. Petersburg Community Band was founded in 1975, and we are still going strong. We are a registered non-profit organization of 75-plus volunteer musicians of all ages. We play a wide variety of music from Blues to Big Band, Classical to Sousa, and just about everything in-between. We are supported by donations or sponsorships. We purchase music or large instruments with donations. However, we play for many local activities at no charge, such as the Special Olympics, Sheriff’s Youth Ranch and the Veterans Administration Hospital. We also play for the city of St. Petersburg Christmas Tree Lighting, many large retirement homes and churches throughout the community. Want to join the band? Send us a note and let us know! Click here for details or send an e-mail to [email protected] . We normally rehearse on Monday evenings at 7pm September through May.

Band History

Joe Berkowitz, founder, created the St. Petersburg Community Band on January 15, 1975. The band was under the direction of Paul Nicholson, who was then the band director at St. Petersburg High School. The Band used the Band Room at St. Petersburg High School and their music until 1976 when Mr. Nicholson unfortunately could no longer devote the time. Dr. George Westcott, a member of the band and former director of music at Eastern Illinois University for 25 years, led the band for the next 10 years using facilities at Boca Ciega High School. In 1988 Dr. Westcott gave up conducting and Don MacTavish, director of the Festival of States took over the baton for six years. Mr. Don MacTavish was transferred to Orlando in 1994 and Rob Romeyn became the director. Rob who is a writer and arranger directed the Band until 2013, with one year off to get his Master’s Degree. Larry Patterson directed during the interim. In 2013 after directing the band for approximately 18 years, Rob wanted to devote more time to his writing and arranging and he turned the baton over to Dr. John Bannon, Principle Timpanist of The Florida Orchestra. The Band plays approximately 18 concerts a year, playing for Special Olympics, Bay Pines VA Hospital, Sheriff’s Youth Ranch, St. Petersburg Christmas Tree Lighting, Festival of Community Bands and many Condominiums and Churches in the area. The current membership is approximately 90 members. The Band has non-profit status and is funded by donations of sponsors. Bob Fritz, Band Historian, joined the band one week after it was founded and has been a member since 1975. He is very knowledgeable about our history. The Band has grown in size so in 2015 we moved to Allendale Methodist Church, 3803 Haines Road, St. Petersburg, FL for rehearsals. Now in 2023 the band has moved to the Riviera United Methodist Church, 75 62nd Ave N, St. Petersburg, FL. We are appreciative to Riviera United Methodist Church for their hospitality and to Allendale Methodist Church in helping us find this new rehearsal location.
