15 Unmissable Things to Do in San Francisco At Night

Golden Gate Bridge at night

Most people associate San Francisco with partly-sunny afternoons walking the waterfront, strolling through Golden Gate Park, or neighborhood-hopping to see the sights and even getting some shopping done. These are all outstanding options for both residents and tourists, but some of the best experiences happen in San Francisco at night.

San Francisco’s history is one of the richest in the country, with iconic sites like the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island , Chinatown, and Fisherman’s Wharf. These are all great during the day, but when the sun goes down, these

It’s not just that there are so many things to do in San Francisco at night, it’s the variety. If you’re looking for nightlife, you’ll find a club, wine bar, or brewery that perfectly matches your taste. If you want to experience a San Francisco dungeon, you can take a tour. There are museums, world-class cuisine, music, theatre, and many more things to do in San Francisco at night. Just remember to drop off your unneeded bags at a San Francisco luggage storage spot before you head out and explore.

Tour Alcatraz at Night

Alcatraz might be one of the most obvious San Francisco recommendations for any visitor, but that’s for good reason. This island compound is one of the most fascinating and unique sites in the country; there is simply nothing else like it. Add an extra layer to your Alcatraz experience by heading there at night for one of their evening tours.

Just taking the boat from Pier 33 to Alcatraz, you can imagine the insurmountable obstacles the many intrepid escapees from this island fortress faced in their quest for freedom. Once you arrive on the island, knowledgeable guides will take you through the facilities and landscape of the island. You’ll learn about famous inmates and the lore that surrounds this island. You’ll also experience Alcatraz Island’s wonderful view of the city lights of the San Francisco skyline and the iconic Golden Gate Bridge.

Dinner Plans in Washington Square Park

If a dinner cruise is too touristy for you, try walking around Washington Square Park and settling on a nice Italian restaurant for a well-earned meal after the day’s sightseeing. This neighborhood’s rich Italian heritage is most evident in its wonderful restaurant scene. While San Francisco hangs its hat on being a modern, cutting-edge city, much of its architecture has an old-world charm. Cafes and restaurants in Washington Square park look like they are either in an old-school East coast neighborhood or actually in Italy.

The most famous of these restaurants are The Italian Homemade Company , Original Joe’s , and Tony’s Pizza Napoletana . The Italian Homemade Company is an authentic red sauce place that prepares homemade classic pasta dishes and other classics. Tony’s is a casual pizzeria and restaurant that excels at the Neapolitan-style pizza, but there are a number of different pizza styles on the menu! If you’re looking for a high-end Italian meal, Original Joe’s is your best bet. The darkly-lit ambiance combines perfectly with an outstanding wine selection and one of San Francisco’s best Italian menus. Looking for something to do after? Head to nearby Lombard Street to explore one of the best streets in San Francisco, and one of the best things to do in San Francisco at night.

Catch a Game

San Francisco’s sports teams have been on fire lately, and their fanbases certainly reflect that. Almost every night of the year, the stadiums in San Francisco are absolutely rocking for nighttime baseball games and an electric atmosphere at tipoff.

If you’re in San Francisco for a winter getaway, check out the newly-built Chase Center to watch the NBA Championship-winning Golden State Warriors play. You can enjoy this state-of-the-art arena’s excellent food options while Steph Curry sets records for three-pointers. If you’re enjoying a summer road trip and find yourself in San Francisco, head to Oracle Park to watch the San Francisco Giants take on the MLB’s best teams. You won’t have to kayak through the San Francisco Bay to catch a home run if you’re in the stands!

Downtown San Francisco

Catch A Concert

San Francisco has one of the country’s best musical histories, with bands like The Grateful Dead, Sly and the Family Stone, and Jefferson Airplane having made this town a famous rock and roll hotbed. San Francisco remains a live-music destination, with some of the most iconic concert venues in the country like The Great American Music Hall .

The Fillmore (named after the neighborhood it resides in) became famous in the 60s as the epicenter of the counterculture scene. It remains a pivotal place to see both legends and contemporary stars. The Independent is an intimate rock club that features up-and-coming bands and musical acts of any genre. It’s located near the Haight-Ashbury neighborhood that certainly shares the same scrappy spirit. The Bill Graham Civic Auditorium is a large historic venue that hosts must-see live shows from some of the world’s biggest touring bands and comedians. Don’t have tickets? Pop into The Hotel Utah Saloon and see if anyone is playing!

You don’t need to drive out to Napa Valley to taste some of California’s best wine. San Francisco’s nightlife caters to just about everyone, but this city’s wine bar scene is truly special.

California Wine Merchant - Located near the presidio, this small bar focuses on an inviting atmosphere and a menu that focuses heavily on California wine producers.

Amelie - Anyone looking for a relaxing atmosphere to sample local and international wine, nibble on cheese, and live jazz should head to this Nob Hill bar.

Wine Down SF - This SoMa bar is the perfect meet-up spot if you’re looking for an after-work drink. The crowd at Wine Down SF skews young, making it San Francisco’s most lively wine bar!

Terroir - This bar was an early pioneer of the natural wine craze, and it still has a heavy focus on this wine niche. Music enthusiasts will fall in love with the extensive vinyl record library that spins an eclectic music collection every night.

The Riddler - This Hayes Valley stalwart made its name for incredible decor and a popcorn machine. This inviting wine bar just so happens to also curate one of the city’s best wine menus!

Exploratorium After Dark

While the Museum of Modern Art, Asian Art Museum, The California Academy of Sciences, and the de Young Museum are all great options during the day, the Exploratorium is where both art and science nerds go for a fun night of education and entertainment. The whole museum is fitted with dazzling light displays, fog machines, atmospheric decoration, and more.

Check out the man-size kaleidoscope for a truly psychedelic experience. There are also mind-bending mirrors that will excite and disturb. While the Exploratorium is one of the best places to take the kids, they also curate a program of guest speakers, live music, and more for adults. This entertainment, packaged with the unique and exhilarating scenery, makes for one of the best things to do in San Francisco at night.

San Francisco has an amazing array of museums, but if you are looking for something educational at night, the Exploratorium is a must-visit!

Take A Night Tour

There is such a wide variety of night tours in San Francisco, that just about anyone will find something that’s for them. These can be taken on foot, or on wheels. Here are a few options:

Electric Tour Company will guide tourists and locals around San Francisco, on Segways! They offer a sunset tour of San Francisco's Chinatown & Little Italy Segway Tour at night that will guide you through two of San Francisco’s most iconic neighborhoods. You’ll experience some cool evening air and even be able to see the San Francisco night skyline, Coit Tower, and even the Bay Lights on this tour.

Looking for something a little spooky? The San Francisco Ghost Hunt Walking Tour guides you through the strange and mysterious history of the Pacific Heights neighborhood, which is where the highest concentration of ghost sightings has been reported. Regardless of whether you encounter a spirit or ghoul, you’ll at least get to see some of the most beautiful Victorian architecture on this walking tour!

Dim Sum In Chinatown

Chinatown’s cultural importance in San Francisco cannot be overstated, and its food scene is a huge part of that. Dim Sum is the perfect group dinner. Because each plate comes with multiple servings of each dish, you can sample from a variety of buns, rolls, skewers, and other delectable finger foods. Adding the BYOB element makes this tradition even better. Bring a six-pack of Bay Area craft beer or a prised bottle of wine you picked up in Napa. Share it with friends over some dumplings and enjoy a quintessential San Francisco dinner.

Chinatown is undoubtedly one of the best places to eat in San Francisco. Check out our guide to the best street food in the city to learn more.

Catch a Broadway Show

San Francisco’s Theater District is world-famous for its Market Street stretch of iconic venues. The most famous of these many venues are The Strand, The Curran, and the historic Orpheum Theatre. The Orpheum Theatre certainly headlines this list, as it’s one of the most famous theater venues outside of Broadway. The best traveling productions run through the Orpheum (for reference, this is where Hamilton came through San Francisco). This district is located between Union Square and the Civic Center, making it perfect for grabbing an amazing dinner or drink before the show.

Lombard St. in San Francisco at night

Bay Bridge Lights

The Bay Bridge might not be as famous as its neighbor the Golden Gate Bridge. But when the sun goes down, it dazzles and shines with the Bay Lights, which have been orchestrated by world-renowned light artist Leo Villareal. You can take in this marvelous sight anywhere along The Embarcadero or even as far as Fisherman’s Wharf and Pier 39, but the best vantage point can be had from Pier 13.

Bar Hop In The Mission

If you’re a hip twenty-something looking for a trendy night, head to The Mission District. While Haight Ashbury can make a claim as the epicenter of San Francisco’s counterculture of decades past, The Mission is currently home to the city’s thriving arts community, and let’s just call it like it is, hipsters.

The Mission District is home to a variety of trendy bars, restaurants, and cafes. But if you find yourself in this neighborhood at night, grab a drink at any of these fun spots:

20 Spot - This wine bar used to be a record store, and with the vinyl spinning a variety of musical genres, you could be convinced it still might be! Sample from a variety of wines and local beer while people-watching and enjoying the music and relaxed atmosphere.

Blondie’s Bar - If you’re looking for a lively and no-frills night out, check out this Valencia Street spot. This “dive” makes a solid martini, just be careful navigating the crowd!

Trick Dog - This elegant watering-hole is perfect for just about every type of evening. It’s nice enough to bring your parents, but it’s trendy enough for a fun date night, or a great spot to start (or end) an evening with your friends. There’s a rotating cocktail menu, so you can sample a variety of flavors.

Monk’s Kettle - This laid-back pub is perfect for anyone looking for a relaxing atmosphere and an outdoor patio (weather pending). Come for the vibes, stay for the beer! Monk’s Kettle just so happens to have one of the best beer lists in the city. Some of the most sought-after beers in the country are on draft here.

If your trip to San Francisco involves partying, you want to know where to stay in the city. Check out our guide to the best neighborhoods in San Francisco.

Beach in San Francisco at night

Night Bloom - Conservatory of Flowers

Golden Gate Park is a treasure trove of wonderful daytime activities. But one of its best features truly comes to life on Friday and Saturday nights. The Conservatory of Flowers, located in the park’s northeast corner, is famous for its Night Bloom events that turn the building into a wonderland of lights and plant life. The Conservatory has a number of different rooms featuring an incredible diversity of plants and ecosystems. Each room is lit up in creative and artistic ways that evoke ecosystems and worlds both natural and fanciful. Stroll through the grounds and you’ll be amazed at what can be done with a few lights and the best collection of flowers in Northern California.

Cabaret or Drag Show

San Francisco is famous for its liberal and accepting culture, which is why a diverse and free-spirited community has made its home here. Dance performances like Cabaret and Drag Shows are very popular in San Francisco and they are a great group activity for a night out. Here are a few of the many bars and productions in San Francisco:

Aunt Charlie’s Lounge (Tenderloin District)

Beaux (The Castro)

DIVAfest (Exit Theatre - Theatre District)

Hamburger Mary’s (The Castro)

OASIS (SoMa)

Church of 8 Wheels

The Church of 8 Wheels is a roller-skating emporium located in the Fillmore District that’s perfect for anyone looking for a nostalgia-driven evening. They have a program of theme nights with everything ranging from disco to DJ sets, either way, they turn this roller rink into a dance floor. Get your groove on while working off some of that dim sum, just try not to fall! This retro roller rink has become a Fillmore Street institution, and it’s perfect for anyone who doesn’t take themselves (or their wheeled dance performances) too seriously.

Craft Beer Experience

Northern California may be known for its prolific wine output, but the region was also one of the early pioneers of America’s craft brewing renaissance. San Francisco was host to early breweries, and to this day, it’s one of the best cities to visit for beer bars and brewery taprooms. While you can find amazing beer at just about every bar and restaurant, here are a few standouts:

Toronado - This is the OG American craft beer bar in San Francisco Bay Area. For over 30 years, this pub has been serving curious beer drinkers American craft beers alongside the best beers from around the world. Pioneering establishments like Toronado have been a key part of craft beer’s explosion in the United States. This beer bar is not only one of the best in San Francisco, it’s one of the best in the country.

Mikkeller - Mikkeller is one of the world’s most famous craft breweries, and they have locations everywhere from San Diego to Tokyo. This outpost in the Tenderloin District is a worthy addition to San Francisco’s already stellar beer scene. There’s an elevated atmosphere here, with a tasting room that resembles a winery’s. Try a wide variety of beers in this bespoke bar.

Local Brewing -  This brewery’s taproom is located in SoMa and offers a variety of approachable beers and an underrated menu of bar food. This is right down the street from Oracle Park, so it’s a solid pre-game option for your next Giants game or just any old Friday night.

Graffiti in San Francisco

San Francisco is one of the absolute best cities in the world to visit. At night, there is such a wide variety of activities that just about everyone will find something to do! San Francisco’s nightlife is extremely inviting, and the relaxed atmospheres in San Francisco bars and restaurants are perfect for tourists who have had a busy day. There are amazing museums and night tours. There are ways to experience Golden Gate Park or Downtown San Francisco. The city’s natural beauty can also be taken in during the day as well as at night.

San Francisco Night Tour Recommendations

Jill on a windy day at the Golden Gate Bridge

by Jill Loeffler   •

Updated: March 27, 2024

A San Francisco night tour is a great way to learn about the city after dark. You will find tours that range from chilling ghost walks to our famous sunset bay cruises to outings with food or drinks or both!

One of my favorites is the night tour of Alcatraz. On this tour, you get to see what it was like to be inside this former federal prison at night. Since they limit the number of people on the night tour, you have more opportunities to move around and get a feel for the stories and events that happened there.

Whether you set sail on the bay, head out on foot, or cruise around in an open-air bus, below you'll find top options for viewing the city lights and more.

Disclaimer : I receive a small commission from some of the links on this page.

1. Alcatraz Night Tour

The most popular San Francisco night tour is the tour of Alcatraz. From my experience, this is the best way to see the real Alcatraz.

During the Alcatraz night tours, they limit the number of visitors. This allows them to open several additional areas of the prison for you to visit.

The last time we were there, they opened the upstairs hospital for visitors. This is where some of the most infamous prisoners of Alcatraz lived out their last days.

These tours are only available a few nights a week.

>> Learn more about the Alcatraz night tour

Insider's Tip : Don't forget to dress warm and bring along your jacket. Even in the summer, the nights here are cool and windy, so the extra layer will allow you to enjoy your San Francisco night tour even more!

2. Double Decker San Francisco Night Tour

If you want to sit back and relax as you soak in the lights of San Francisco, then this night tour is for you! Sit in the open-air top deck of this double decker bus as your driver takes you past all of our best sights.

The tour starts in Fisherman's Wharf. You will then cruise through North Beach ,  Chinatown , and Nob Hill . Admire the Bay Bridge lights as you cross over to Treasure Island for a photo stop. This tour also includes a ride through Union Square  and along the Embarcadero.

In 60 to 90 minutes, you will see most of what SF has to offer. This tour leaves at 6:30 pm. This means that during the winter months it will be after dark and during the summer the sun will still be shining.

>> Get more details about this popular tour and pick up tickets

3. San Francisco Bay Sunset or Twilight Cruise

This San Francisco night tour starts with a ride by Alcatraz Island. You will then cruise around  Angel Island and along the shores of Tiburon, Belvedere (an island with some of the most expensive homes in the US), and Sausalito .

You will watch the sunset or the evening lights as you cruise over to and under the Golden Gate Bridge . On your way back, you will ride along the shores of San Francisco while taking in the stunning skyline.

Food and drink are available for purchase onboard this two-hour tour.

This sunset cruise is available from April to November. In the winter months (November to March), this cruise still runs, but with some slight modifications. Since the sun goes down earlier, you will not catch the sunset, but you will still get to enjoy the beautiful scenery as you cruise around the bay.

>> San Francisco Bay Sunset Cruise

4. Sunset Photography Tour

Have you always wanted that perfect picture of the Golden Gate Bridge at night? If so, then this Sunset Photography Tour is your chance!

You will head out to several scenic locations, including Baker Beach and the Palace of Fine Arts near the Golden Gate Bridge. Bring along your camera and your expert photography guide will help you capture that picture-perfect moment in the golden hour.

This tour runs most afternoons (just before dusk) during the week and lasts for 2 to 3 hours.

>> Visit Viator to learn more and pick up your tickets today

5. Walk with Spirits: A Haunted Pub Crawl

This fun and unique tour is part bar-hop and part ghost tour. The spirits that you taste will be accompanied by spirits that have haunted SF's downtown streets since the Gold Rush era and the famous earthquake and fire of 1906.

Your guide will walk you through Jackson Square, "Devil's Acre," and the Barbary Coast, and finally you'll end up in Chinatown.

Along the way, you'll enter four ghost-ridden bars, and hear about the tragic stories of the miners, sailors, and women who walked there before you.

This tour starts at 6:30 pm. It runs Fridays and/or Saturdays, depending on the week. Drinks are not included.

>> Find out more and make your reservation for this fun and spooky tour

6. True Crime Tales from the Haight

The Haight Ashbury District has a lively past. It was once home to the Summer of Love, tie dyed t-shirts, and music in the park.

It's also seen its share of serial killers, ghosts, and murders.

On this two-hour tour, you'll learn more about where Charles Mason and Jim Jones spent their time here. You'll also hear about the Zodiac Killer and the murders of Mayor Moscone and Harvey Milk.

The guide for this tour is great and will also tell you more about famous musicians such as Janis Joplin, Jefferson Airplane, and others that used to live here.

This two-hour tour is offered most days of the week at 5 pm.

>> Get tickets for all dates on Get Your Guide

7. SF Ghosts: Gold and Ghouls Tour

Do you love to chase ghosts? On this one-hour, one-mile walking trek, you will visit eight spine-chilling, historical and haunted places in San Francisco. Some of the dark stories you'll hear date back to the Gold Rush days.

You will visit both the Nob Hill and Union Square Districts as you learn about infamous crimes that took place there. You'll hear about some of our famous haunted hotels, streets, and what really happened in the Sutter Building.

This tour is offered most nights of the week at 8 pm.

>> Get tickets for all dates on GetYourGuide

8. Luxury Dinner Cruise on the Bay

The San Francisco Dinner Dance Cruise is a long running bay cruise. This 2- to 2.5-hour San Francisco night tour includes a formal dinner with music.

During the cruise, you will get the chance to watch the sunset over the San Francisco Bay. You will also cruise past several popular SF attractions such as Alcatraz Island, Sausalito, and the Golden Gate Bridge.

Throughout the tour, you will feast on a three-course meal made with local ingredients. The meal is prepared on board.

There will be DJ entertainment for dancing. Coffee, tea, and water are included. Alcoholic drinks will be available for purchase at the bar.

The dinner dance cruise is available several nights a week throughout the year.

This is a more formal setting than the above-mentioned sunset cruise. The attire is nice, business casual dress. No jeans allowed.

>> Find tickets for upcoming cruises

9. North Beach: Gourmet Ghost Tour

Both a food and a ghost tour of one of SF's most iconic districts—what could be more fun for an evening walk around town?

This tour includes a full meal: an antipasto platter, a focaccia sandwich, pizza, and cannoli for dessert. You'll munch at different stops as you listen to the mysterious tales of North Beach's past and present.

Your encounters will include the resident ghosts at the San Remo Hotel to the landmark Washington Square, to the kidnapped sailors that haunt The Saloon to a modern ghost story at the Condor Club.

You'll even make a stop in the haunted labyrinth of streets that make up Chinatown.

>> Find available dates and tickets on Viator

10. City Sunset Tour by Vintage Sidecar

One of the coolest ways to check out the streets around San Francisco is on this City Sunset Tour by Vintage Sidecar.

You and others in your group will ride in sidecars as your drivers and guides show you interesting places all around the city.

You'll see parts of Union Square, Civic Center, and North Beach. My favorite part of the tour is riding down Lombard Street and checking out the sunset at the Golden Gate Bridge.

This tour is about two hours long and is a unique way to get to know SF!

Is There an Alcatraz Ghost Tour?

Well, going on an Alcatraz at night tour is creepy and hearing the stories from the national park rangers adds a huge perspective of the types of people who lived and died in the prison.

At night you also get to view the hospital which is super creepy. But the only official tours are led by the National Parks Service.

2. Golden Gate Bridge at Night

The Golden Gate Bridge is amazing at night.  It is one of the best places to get those San Francisco views!  You can look across and see the Bay Bridge all lit up as well as the beautiful city lights.

Golden Gate Bridge Hours

Summer: 5 am – 8:00 pm

Winter: 5 am – 6:30 pm

The Golden Gate Bridge is a great place to spend your evening in San Francisco.  You can enjoy the sunset and walk across the bridge.

The bridge is 1.7 miles each way, so you will want to give yourself enough time to walk in each direction.  You could also ride bikes across the bridge .

Our Experience

My husband and I love to run.  This was the highlight of my last trip.  We ran the entire bridge.  It was an incredible experience.  The bridge has lights so you can see just fine.

We continued our run down towards Chrissy Fields and you get an even better San Francisco view of the Golden Gate Bridge.

It was an unforgettable experience!

After you enjoy this evening activity in San Francisco you can head out for more fun things to do in San Francisco at night.

3. Bay Bridge Lights

The less famous bridge in San Francisco is the Bay Bridge.  It was given a beautiful makeover and now hosts one of the most artistic light displays in the Bay area.

The Bay Bridge Lights are viewable from dusk to dawn.  Checking out this San Francisco night view is a must.

Book A San Francisco Night Tour

You should book a San Francisco night tour that offers fantastic views of the bridge.

4. Hop-On Hop-Off Bus San Francisco Night Tour

I love the idea of a hop-on-hop-off bus tour at night .  I wanted to do this so bad the last time we went to San Francisco.  There are designated times.  We were meeting someone for dinner during the times so we couldn't fit it in.

San Francisco Night Tour Bus

The tour is 90 minutes long.  It will take you to all the major tourist sites so that you can get the best San Francisco views.

The ticket usually includes both the day and night tour however if you are looking just for the San Francisco night bus tour this link will be slightly cheaper.

5. San Francisco Sunset Cruise

If you are looking for San Francisco evening activities that will blow your mind consider a sunset cruise.

One option is to book a catamaran ride . This cruise is a great way to spend your evening in San Francisco.  It will take you near Alcatraz, under the Golden Gate Bridge, and provide incredible views of the San Francisco night skyline.

If dinner and a boat ride sound like a perfect way to spend your evening in San Francisco then booking a dinner cruise is a great option.  This yacht will take you around the bay while you enjoy dinner, dancing, and the San Francisco night views.

This is one of those San Francisco night activities that are perfect to do in October!

8. Chinatown Segway Tour

This tour will not only guide you through Chinatown but a guide will take you to Little Italy and the Embarcadero.  This 2.5-hour tour will give you amazing San Francisco night views of the lights of the Bay Bridge.

You can also grab some delicious Chinese Food in Chinatown.

Best Chinese Food in Chinatown

  • Chong Qing Xiao Mian
  • Chubby Noodle
  • Mensho Tokyo

9. San Francisco Little Italy

Little Italy is where you will want to spend a night in San Francisco.  The food in this area is amazing! There are so many great restaurants. In fact, some of the best restaurants in San Francisco are in this area.

We ate in this area and loved it! In fact, there are so many restaurants it is really hard to choose!

I felt really safe in this area. There were lots and lots of people enjoying the nightlife in San Francisco.

Little Italy Restaurant Recommendations

  • The Stinking Rose
  • Golden Boy Pizza
  • The Italian Homemade Company

10. San Francisco Museums at Night

There are some fun events in San Francisco hosted by different museums.

Museums San Francisco Night Events

The Exploratorium has an adult-only After Dark Event on Thursday nights from 6:00 pm to 10:00 PM

The California Academy of Science also offers a Nightlife event that is from 6:00 pm -10:00 pm every Thursday.

The Asian Art Museum stays open till 9:00 pm. The Yerba Buena Gardens are open until 10:00 pm.

There are so many great museums in San Francisco, it is also the perfect and fun thing to do in San Francisco at night if it rains.

11. Cable Car

The San Francisco cable cars are a must! Going on the cable cars is a great way to start your evening in San Francisco!

They do stop running at 8:00 pm so in the summer you may not be able to enjoy this San Francisco activity at night.  But during the other seasons, you will love taking in the San Francisco views at night!

Riding the Cable Cars

The cable cars were a highlight for me on our last trip.  It is really fun going up and down the steep hills!

We waited to get on a cable car at the start of the route. (Near Marina District) We wanted to have the full experience.  The line was very long!  We had to wait 30-40 minutes to get on.  If you walked up a couple of blocks you can jump right on without waiting.

12. Go See a Game

San Francisco is home to every type of pro sports team in the country.  There are lots of sport night events in San Francisco.

San Francisco Sports Teams

  • SF Giants (Baseball)
  • Golden State Warriors (Basketball)

13. Go To a Play at the Orpheum Theatre

If you love Broadway, San Francisco has a fabulous selection of plays.  Going to a play is one of the best things to do at night in San Francisco. It is also a perfect idea if you are planning a girls trip in San Francisco .

Book A Show

They typically only show one show at the Orpheum Theater at a time, but they are some of the best Broadway has to offer. You can book your tickets and enjoy a fabulous San Francisco night out.

One thing to note. The theatre district is close to Union Square, however, it is also very close to a dangerous area of San Francisco.  I would be careful as you exit the play.  Do not go walking alone at night in this area.  Immediately get a Uber after the show!

14. Pier 39/ Fisherman's Wharf

Pier 39 and Fisherman's Wharf are some of the top things to do in San Francisco. However, on our last trip, we wanted to see what it was like at night.  Everything was closed by 9:00 pm.

I was kind of surprised that all the restaurants and the pier were nearly empty.  There are lots of activities near Fisherman's Wharf and they were all closed. Seriously the only thing opened was In-and-Out-Burger.

Many San Francisco night tours start at Fisherman's Wharf and Pier 39. So it is a great early evening San Francisco activity to do.

We went in October, so maybe this is different during the summer months? I can safely say that Pier 39 after 9:00 pm is not the San Francisco at-night experience you will want unless there is a special event in San Francisco going on.

15. Tuk Tuk Night Tour

I saved the best for last!  Seriously, if you want a complete San Francisco night tour you need to book this Tuk Tuk adventure .

18 Best Things to Do in San Francisco at Night

san francisco evening tours

Piriya Photography / Getty Images

Like any big city, San Francisco has its share of evening fare: theater and performing arts, fine dining, and plenty of bars and nightclubs . But what if you don't like those typical after-hours pursuits or are traveling with a family? Never fear, there are still lots of things you can do in San Francisco after the sun goes down, whether you're into ghost tours, evening baseball games, or just want to see the best views of the city after dark. Here's a list of 18 of our favorites.

Take in Views from a Sunset Cruise

Adventure Cat Sailing Charters

End your long day of sightseeing with a relaxing sunset cruise on San Francisco Bay. Red and White Fleet offers a 90-minute sailing daily, during which you'll have the chance to sail past Alcatraz Island and underneath the Golden Gate Bridge and Oakland Bay Bridge. Adventure Cat Sailing Charters has a similar 90-minute experience, giving guests the chance to sail in sailboat under the Golden Gate Bridge — each ticket also includes a free drink per person. Whichever cruise you choose, remember to bring along a jacket, as it can get quite chilly on the water at night.

Embrace the City's Rich Comedy Scene

Punch Line San Francisco

San Francisco is home to some of the greatest comedy clubs in the country, including the Punch Line , which brings in legends like Dave Chappelle, Jerry Seinfeld, Margaret Cho, and Dana Carvey, among other big names; Cobb's Comedy Club, frequented by Michael Ian Black, Dave Attell, and Michelle Wolf; and The Setup , home to a more underground comedy scene.

If you prefer improvisational comedy, head to the Shelton Theater's Secret Improv Society show, which is based entirely off audience suggestions and is reminiscent of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?" The same theater also hosts stand-up comedy shows by local, independent artists during its Cheaper Than Therapy sessions, which are also worth checking out.

If you're short on time, opt for Dylan's Comedy Bus Tour for a BYOB 90-minute tour of San Francisco aboard a minibus, led by local comedians who share their best jokes and stories about the city as you make your way around town.

Go to a Roller Disco Party at the Church of 8 Wheels

The Church of 8 Wheels

For something a bit more quirky and retro, head to the Church of 8 Wheels , where you'll get to live out your roller disco fantasies in a former church on Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, and Sunday nights alongside area locals. Don't worry about packing your skates—you can rent some for a small fee—or being a skating pro, as lessons are available on Fridays and Saturdays ahead of the skate night festivities. Check the website for more info on schedules and events and lean into the Church's mission: to spread the joy of skating throughout the land.

Explore Jack Kerouac's San Francisco

Gerald French / Getty Images

Literary enthusiasts should stop by City Lights Booksellers and Publishers , the legendary North Beach bookstore where Jack Kerouac and his Beatnik buddies used to hang out in the 1950s. Visit Vesuvio Cafe , located just across Jack Kerouac Alley and still a San Francisco institution for local artists, writers, poets, musicians, and anyone who is fan of the writer, as well as Allen Ginsberg, Dylan Thomas, and some of his other contemporaries. If time allows, learn all about this fascinating group and the world they lived in around the corner at The Beat Museum .

Have a Drink at a Ritzy Hotel Bar

The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco

Kick off your evening at the swanky, swoon-worthy  JCB Tasting Lounge  at The Ritz-Carlton, San Francisco, where this jewel box of a lounge seats about a dozen people in an eye-popping setting of black and gold, animal prints, and glittering crystal. Order a glass of passionate, provocative No. 9 sparkling wine or flirt over the flamboyant, sensual (and oh-so-yummy) No. 69 Pinot Noir. When this place fills up all its Baccarat crystal glasses, it won't accept another single soul, no matter how much you beg, so make reservations to avoid disappointment.

For a gorgeous view from slightly less opulent surroundings, you can't beat the Top of the Mark at the InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco hotel, offering creative cocktails and epic views from its perch on the 19th floor since 1939.

See the Lights on the San Francisco Bay Bridge

TripSavvy / Betsy Malloy

At sunset, the otherwise utilitarian San Francisco Bay Bridge transforms into a sparkling, LED light sculpture. Computer programs create incredible patterns that span the bridge and there are a few different places to best take in the view, whether you want to watch from the Embarcadero between the Ferry Building and the bridge or look down on the lights from the top of Telegraph Hill's Coit Tower.

Explore Alcatraz at Night

Touring Alcatraz during the day can be hot, cramped, and take away from valuable time elsewhere. But visiting the storied prison at night extends your daytime sightseeing opportunities and gives you a chance to experience special programs and activities not typically offered during the day. You'll also be the only group on the island, which can add to the slightly mysterious charm of this unique 2.5-hour guided tour.

Catch a Baseball Game at Oracle Park

DanCardiff / Getty Images

Nighttime baseball games are a fun tradition anywhere, but catching a game at Oracle Park , formerly known as AT&T Park and home of the San Francisco Giants, is particularly enjoyable, especially if you're visiting with the whole family in tow. Grab a hot dog and a pint of beer and join in on the fun. The expansive ballpark also hosts a few different special events and concerts throughout the summer.

Visit Treasure Island for This View

Treasure Island is possibly the best place in town to watch the city lights come out at sunset. The tiny island is a fun place to explore during the day, with bikes, cocktails, and a winery, but you won't believe the photos you'll be able to get of the San Francisco skyline once the sun falls below the horizon each night. To get there, take the Bay Bridge toward Oakland and exit halfway across.

Escape to the Marin Headlands

If you're interested in snapping more breathtaking sunset photos, this photo was taken from the Marin Headlands, located on the northwest side of the Golden Gate Bridge. The city lights behind the bridge are truly magical. To get there, go north across the Golden Gate Bridge, exit just past the north vista point and turn left to drive up the hill.

Walk Along Pier 7

Hidden away from other touristy spots in San Francisco, you'll find Pier 7 along the waterfront between Washington Street and Broadway. A short walk to the end of it gives a beautiful city lights view, and there are plenty of benches where you can relax and enjoy a perfect San Francisco evening, crowd-free.

Climb to the Top of Coit Tower

Head to the top of historic Telegraph Hill, where you'll find San Francisco's 210-foot Coit Tower. While the ground floor of the tower sports colorful murals painted by local artists, the top level offers beautiful views of the glittering skyline. Pro tip: This view is very similar to what you can see from the top floor of the parking garage above the police station on Vallejo Street.

Photograph the Transamerica Pyramid at Night

Whether you love it or hate it, San Francisco's iconic Transamerica Pyramid has always had a unique profile in the city. You can get some of the most iconic SF photos by shooting it from one of the city's many hilltops, set against the lights of Berkeley across the Bay.

Stroll Through the Streets of Chinatown

As soon as the sun goes down, Chinatown nearly turns into a ghost town. The few people who walk through it never seem to look up to see all the neon-lit signs or the glowing, red lanterns against the twilight blue sky. Don't be dull like everyone else. Take the short walk along Grant Avenue from Bush Street to Columbus just after the sun goes down—and don't forget to look up.

Take a Segway Tour at Night

Why let your feet get tired when you can use a Segway human transporter to explore the cityscape at night? An evening tour with the  San Francisco Electric Tour Company  is more fun than you can imagine. Tours begin in Chinatown and cover the Embarcadero and Little Italy.

Go Ghost-Hunting

San Francisco Ghost Hunt

The  San Francisco Ghost Hunt  promises to introduce you to San Francisco's most notorious ghosts on a 90-minute lantern-lighted walk through Pacific Heights. Tours are led by Christian Cagigal, a Bay Area magician and actor, so you know you'll be properly entertained. The Haunt offers 90-minute ghost-hunting adventures through Chinatown and the Jackson Square Historic District, focusing on the city's darker side. Guests also have the chance to use EMF monitors to detect paranormal activity during the tour.

Visit a Museum After Hours

Phil Bond / Getty Images

Many of San Francisco's best museums offer late-night entry at least once a week. The California Academy of Sciences offers late-night admission every Thursday from 6 p.m. to 10 p.m., while the de Young Museum , one of the city's best art museums is open late on Friday from 5:30 p.m. to 8:45 p.m. Most museums' late-night programs include special talks and performances or sometimes food and drink.

See a Concert at The Fillmore

 The Fillmore

This historic concert venue opened in 1954 and has hosted the likes of the Grateful Dead, Led Zeppelin, and The Who, among many others. The landmark Geary Boulevard venue still showcases both rock legends and up-and-comers, making it a uniquely San Franciscan way to spend an evening.

Telegraph Hill with spectacular views over the San Francisco Bay                            We recommend the SUV tour as it has unrestricted access to all locations. Telegraph Hill offers majestic views of the San Francisco Bay and has been used as a landmark to guide ships entering the San Francisco Bay via the Golden Gate Bridge. The famous Coit Tower stands atop Telegraph Hill and has been there since 1933. It was a gift to the city from Lillie Hitchcock Coit and built as a Federal W.P.A. project. The tower's design is reminiscent of a fire hose nozzle. The dramatic setting of scenic Telegraph Hill is featured in many famous movies including: ‘Vertigo,’ ‘Dark Passage,’ ‘Out of the Past,’ ‘The House on Telegraph Hill,’ and in Clint Eastwood's ‘Dirty Harry’ series. Families will have fun climbing up and down the steep staircases zig-zagging amongst quaint hillside houses and chattering green parrots. Check out The Wild Parrots of Telegraph Hill, a documentary on escaped feathered pets that flock together all around the neighborhood.

Alcatraz Island                            Alcatraz Island sits in the middle of the San Francisco Bay and is the most famous tourist attraction in the San Francisco Bay area. The legendary ‘Rock’ has drawn millions of tourists from all over the world. Enjoy the spectacular views of the Rock and the surrounding islands including Angel and Treasure Islands in the middle of San Francisco Bay.

Fisherman's Wharf                            San Francisco's Fisherman's Wharf is one of the city's most popular tourist attractions and brings millions of tourists from all over the world year-round. It is an exciting and dynamic attraction during the daytime and the nighttime. Fisherman's Wharf is home to the city's most popular shopping boutiques, fancy hotels, seafood, restaurants, and famous museums. The Wharf offers incredible and scenic views of the bay where Alcatraz, Angel Island, Sausalito, and the Golden Gate Bridge are all visible from the shoreline.

Palace of Fine Arts in Marina District                            The Palace of Fine Arts is located in the Marina District in San Francisco. This masterpiece of classic architecture was built in 1915 for the Panama-Pacific Exposition and was designed by Bernard Ralph Maybeck (he was a prominent architect in the Arts and Crafts movement of the early 20th century). The Marina District has a lot to offer locals and visitors as it is not only home to key landmarks, museums and beaches, but also to a variety of shopping, restaurants and a lively nightlife scene, all of which are driven by its affluent, young, and dynamic residents. Union Street is a more upscale and elegant neighborhood, while Chestnut Street in the Marina District tends to be a bit more casual, eclectic, and hip.

The Golden Gate Bridge at night                            The bridge is widely considered a beautiful architectural achievement because of its challenging and giant structure. This iconic monument became a Modern Wonder of the World. Just before sunset, your tour guide will drive you across the Golden Gate Bridge and up to the Marin Headlines, where you can view the skyline of San Francisco between the two beautiful Art Deco towers of the bridge. For photography enthusiasts, don't forget to bring your tripod and a camera that allows you take long exposure photographs for postcard-perfect images.

Pacific Heights                             Pacific Heights is the most expensive real-estate area in San Francisco, where movies stars and celebrities live. Your tour guide will drive you through this neighborhood and show you where Mrs. Doubtfire was filmed. Pacific Heights is located on one of the most scenic hills of California. It offers panoramic and splendid views of the San Francisco Bay, the Golden Gate Bridge, Alcatraz Island, The Palace of Fine Arts, and the Presidio.

Japantown                            Japantown offers an amazing number of traditional Japanese restaurants, sushi bars, nightclubs, and karaoke lounges. Experience this wonderful neighborhood that has been an important facet of San Francisco culture for over 100 years. You may also consider visiting the charming neighborhood of Fillmore, famous for its nightclubs, movie theaters, and local and international restaurants including Yoshi's at Fillmore.

Nob Hill Nightlife                            Grace Cathedral is located atop Nob Hill in San Francisco. It is a Neo-Gothic style Cathedral built after the French ‘Cathédrale Notre-Dame de Chartres.’ You can see stained glass, an outdoor labyrinth, and twin towers. Grace Cathedral was founded in 1849 during the California Gold Rush, and was rebuilt after the 1906 earthquake. At the end of your night tour, you may ask your tour guide to drop you off at the Tonga Room and Hurricane Bar located in the Fairmont Hotel, or at the Top of the Mark restaurant at the Intercontinental Mark Hopkins. At the Top of the Mark, you can enjoy a cocktail or dinner in the rooftop lounge which boasts breathtaking views.

Lombard Street: San Francisco's Crookedest Street                            Lombard Street was laid out in the 1920s and is the most photographed site after the Golden Gate Bridge and Alcatraz. Known as the crookedest street in San Francisco, this particular section of Lombard Street is paved with bricks, and vans and buses are prohibited to drive on this road. Join us on our 4x4 SUV tour to discover Lombard Street and learn more about the story that makes Lombard Street so famous. Unlike large vans and motor coaches, our 4x4 SUVs are allowed to drive on San Francisco’s crookedest street!

North Beach and Washington Square

North Beach is a dynamic and eclectic neighborhood also known as ‘Little Italy.’ North Beach is a popular destination for locals and visitors because of its vibrant nightlife, coffee shops, nightclubs, famous jazz clubs, local Italian restaurants, and boutiques. It is located along Columbus Street, just a few blocks from the Transamerica Pyramid – which is the tallest and most recognizable skyscraper in the San Francisco skyline. North Beach is also famous for the St. Paul and St. Peter churches, which are situated in the heart of Washington Square. Don’t miss this city night tour to better explore Little Italy’s gourmet food, arts, and famous jazz clubs.

Coit Tower and Telegraph Hill                            Coit Tower stands atop Telegraph Hill offering scenic views of the San Francisco Bay Area, bridges, and islands. Coit Tower was built in 1933 sponsored by eccentric Lillie Hitchcock Coit. She inherently believed in San Francisco’s renaissance and was committed to maintaining its beauty and outstanding architecture. She also admired and supported San Francisco's firefighters, which might explain why Coit Tower’s architectural design is reminiscent of a fire hose nozzle.

Union Square: The heart of San Francisco                             Union Square is the heart of San Francisco and considered a paradise for shoppers. Union Square is a plaza of 2.6 acres (11,000 m2) bordered by Geary, Powell, Post, and Stockton Streets in downtown San Francisco. ‘Union Square’ refers to the central shopping, hotels, cultural center, and theater district that surrounds the plaza. This beautiful space got its name from the rallies, in support of the Union Army during the Civil War, which was held there. Today, this one-block plaza and nearby area is home to one of the world's premier shopping districts, with the largest collection of department stores, upscale boutiques, tourist trinket shops, art galleries, and saloons in California, making Union Square a major tourist attraction and a vital, cosmopolitan place in downtown San Francisco.

San Francisco's Chinatown: The oldest and largest Chinatown in North America                             San Francisco's Chinatown is the oldest and largest Chinatown in North America. It is home to the largest Chinese community outside of China and brings people from all over the world. It is located between Nob Hill, North Beach, and Union Square. We offer guided walking tours through Chinatown as well, with lunch or dinner included. Book online or give us a call, and we will take care of the rest.

The Ferry Building and the Embarcadero                            The Ferry Building is located in the heart of the Embarcadero and offers spectacular views of the San Francisco Bay. It is a terminal for ferries and home to an upscale gourmet farmers' market as well as a number of wonderful restaurants and shops. The Ferry Building Bell Tower and its old clock tower contribute to its Mediterranean ambiance.

The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge and Treasure Island                             The San Francisco-Oakland Bay Bridge opened in 1936 – almost a full year before the Golden Gate Bridge, and cost more than twice as much to build! It is considered an incredible engineering achievement because the first half of the bridge consists of two major spans, supported by a steel-framed concrete pillar with more concrete than the Empire State Building and connects San Francisco to the East Bay via Yerba Buena Island. Enjoy incredible views of the Bay Bridge, Yerba Buena and Treasure Islands on our city tours and bay cruise tours. We will drive you to Treasure Island which provides glittery panoramic and breathtaking views of the city’s skyline.

City Hall of San Francisco and Civic Center                             San Francisco’s city hall is the heart of the vibrant Civic Center area. The structure is reminiscent of the European Beaux-Arts and classic architectural style. Its baroque dome is the fifth largest dome in the world. San Francisco's beautiful city hall was featured in many famous movies including ‘The Rock,’ ‘Dirty Harry,’ and James Bond films. Fun fact: Joe DiMaggio and Marilyn Monroe were married at San Francisco’s City Hall.

Alamo Square Park and the "Painted Ladies"                            Alamo Square became the symbol of San Francisco’s Victorian houses. The square offers splendid views of the famous ‘Painted Ladies’ or ‘Seven Sisters’ Victorian houses .You can also photograph different angles of the city from Alamo Square. Join us on this San Francisco City tour by night to witness this wonderful spot!

Twin Peaks and Sutro Tower                            Twin Peaks are two hills on the highest elevation of San Francisco. They offer sweeping and unique views of the San Francisco Bay area and the Pacific Ocean. Sutro Tower stands atop Twin Peaks among other towers that provide transmission of television and radio. We recommend our private SUV Tour if you are interested in exploring San Francisco and its scenic highlands in-depth. Book online and take advantage of our discounted rates.

Haight Ashbury : The Capital Of The Hippies

Haight-Ashbury is a district named for its intersection of Haight and Ashbury Streets. The Haight-Ashbury district is noted for its central role during the 1960s hippie movement, a post-runner and closely associated offshoot of the Beat Generation. Join us on one of our Private Tours to explore the unique boutiques, music halls, mural paintings, exotic coffee shops, and restaurants in this neighborhood. You can also visit The Mission and Castro districts.

san francisco evening tours

-91% of the total amount will be refunded to your credit card if you cancel your trip at least 15 business days prior to the scheduled tour (or the date of the tour or service). The remaining 9% covers the required transaction fees; that’s 4.5 % per each transaction (booking is one transaction and refunding is a second transaction for which we get charged as well). (weekends and holidays don’t count).

-50% of the total amount will be refunded if the tour is canceled at least 7 business days prior to the scheduled tour date or service. (weekends and holidays don’t count).

-15% of the total amount will be refunded if the tour is canceled at least 5 business days prior to the scheduled date of the tour (weekends and holidays don’t count).

-0% of the total amount will be refunded if the tour is canceled 4 business days, or less, prior to the day of the scheduled tour or service. This includes no-shows. (weekends and holidays don’t count)

Please note that all refunds are subject to credit card and merchant’s fees imposed on us by credit cards companies and merchant banks or providers. The average amount of credit cards and merchant’s transactions fees may range between 3.9 % to 9.8% of the total amount of your purchase (transaction) based on the type of credit card you use when booking this tour, the credit card issuer, country and conversion fees we are subject per transaction. Many foreign countries apply additional origination and conversions fees.

Important: Please note that we reserve the date(s) you requested and booked on our website for you and we decline taking other tours for these date(s) to honor yours. We keep a tour guide and a luxury vehicle on hold and make all required reservations and arrangements for you and your party, so please don’t change the date or cancel at the last minute as we have other customers and tours to honor.

– Reservation and Confirmation: As soon as you book online, a merchant receipt is generated automatically and sent to you via email. We will also confirm your reservation by email and send you a tour voucher or email confirming your booking date, tour and pick-up time. This tour confirmation or voucher is only valid for the specific date(s) you reserved on our website, and only valid for the names listed on the booking. You can’t transfer the names or ask for a different date(s), as we have other tours to honor. You may not change the tour date within 15 days from the date of the scheduled tour you booked, and there will be no alternative days offered.

In an effort to honor all tours, we reserve the right to partner with other tour operators, freelancers, and/or our sister companies. The exact name and contact information of your tour operator will be stated on your tour voucher and the trip confirmation will be issued especially for you after we received your approved transaction.

-All tours are subject to availability as we may get several tour requests at the same time. Approved payment transactions do not guarantee your tour unless it has been confirmed via email.

Please note that when transactions are declined, we do not receive any information in this regard, so  do not expect your reservation to be in place unless you received written confirmation.  Please contact us asap, but do not expect us to honor your tour without an email confirmation and tour voucher from us.

If your booking was declined by your own bank, this is often due to a mismatch between your bank information (such as the names on the credit card, zip/postal code or billing address) compared to the bank information you provided on our website when placed your order. Sometimes, transactions are declined due to insufficient funds as well. Your tour(s) will not be confirmed until your new transaction is approved by your own bank. We apologize for the inconvenience, but your own bank did so to prevent fraud and protect your credit card information or due one of the above factors.

All our tours are subject to availability even when the transactions are approved. We will get back to you as soon as possible and let you know if the required tour(s) and date(s) still available. Also, all our tours are conducted in English unless otherwise stated in the email or tour voucher confirmation we will send you soon, once your transaction is approved.

We reserve the right to offer you suitable substitutes or changes to your itinerary, tours or services due to special events, weather conditions, road closures, vehicle breakdowns, unpredictable circumstances, unavailability and/or due to last minute reservations. We assume no responsibility for delays caused by accidents, breakdowns, unforeseen accidents or events, road, weather conditions and/or all other circumstances beyond our control. We do not guarantee to arrive to, or depart from, any point at a specific time for the same above considerations. However, we will do our very best to honor your tour itinerary and schedule accordingly.

Hot-Air Balloon Special Cancellation and Refund Policy: This is an 8-hour guided tour (door to door when leaving from San Francisco or 6 hours when leaving from Napa or Sonoma Valley).

Your balloon ride will be scheduled before sunrise depending on weather conditions. Your safety is our #1 priority. Some rides may launch from other sites like Yolo County or Pope Valley when Napa weather conditions don’t allow us to fly the balloon. Balloons will never fly when it rains or in winds higher than 12 mph.

Heads-up: The hot-air balloon pilots offer alternative launching sites when Napa Valley weather conditions don’t permit them to take off from the valley. This maximizes your chances to fly from other sites even when weather conditions are not ideal in Napa.

Non-refundable for No-Show or last-minute changes: Our office staff will notify you by 5 pm the day prior to your hot-air balloon tour (generally, we pick our customers between 4 and 5 am at your hotel in San Francisco or Napa). If we are unable to reach you before 5 pm the day prior to your balloon tour because you don’t respond to your email or cellphone, or because you decided not to return our calls, your driver will still show up at 4 am as scheduled. However, if you don’t wake up , this will be a no-show and therefore, the entire cost will be non-refundable as per our refund terms and cancellation policy.

The Refundable Portion of the balloon ride: If you decide to cancel the balloon ride portion of the tour, you must do so at least 72 hours in advance. The hot-air balloon ride is only refundable when the pilot cancels it the same day due to bad weather or for any other considerations. If you cancel the balloon reservation is 72 hours in advance; the tour guide will pick you up at 9 am instead of 4 am and proceed with the wine tour as scheduled.

The wine tour itself is not refundable regardless of weather conditions. However, if you wish to proceed and take your chance, your tour guide will pick you up as scheduled at 4 am. Please keep in mind that we have reserved this day just for you and turned down other reservations to honor your tour, we still get charged and pay all wages and business expenses. For that, only the hot-air balloon ride portion of this package is refundable IF YOU CANCEL IT BEFORE 5 PM THE DATE PRIOR TO YOUR TOUR . If so, you will receive a $190 refund per person, which will be credited back to you within 7 business days. If you book directly with Viator, please review their own terms and policy .

Again, no changes or modifications are accepted within 72 hours prior to your trip. We close our office at 5 pm and your driver goes as early as 7 pm to be able to wake up at 2 am and come over to the office to pick up the required vehicle and meet you at 4 am at your hotel.

We are extremely transparent about these unforeseen weather conditions ,cancellation policy and terms. Please read these terms carefully so we avoid any misunderstanding or blame. Our drivers are humans and go to bed incredibly early to be able to show up at your hotel at 4 am. Please do not make any last-minute changes after 5 pm the day before your departure/tour. We will not even get your message until the next day!

Wheelchair and Handicap Accessibility issues: We apologize but our vehicles are not equipped with wheelchair access. There is no room for a wheelchair in our vehicles unless it’s a very small and foldable wheelchair. However, the main concern is the customers’ ability to get it in and out of the vehicles for liability issues. When kids, seniors, and wheelchairs are part of the tour, this will slow down the trip, and requires overtime. $179 will be charged to your credit card for each additional hour added to the tour after 12 hours by van, and $129 per hour when touring by SUV.

Pets:  Pets are not allowed in our vehicles out of respect for those who have allergies to pets.

Smoking:  Our vehicles are also non-smoking.

Clothing:  Please be prepared for cold weather, slippery roads and hiking trails, so have comfortable waterproof hiking shoes to walk on the snow in winter and spring. This long day-tour is hard on kids and seniors, we therefore recommend the overnight tour package.

Parks, Attractions and Site’s Closures:  We are not responsible, nor liable, for road and weather conditions. State and national parks’ closure can happen at any time and without a prior notice, due to bad road and weather considerations. No refund will be issued, regardless the reasons for which the trip may not reach its destination. If you cancel or stop the tour for personal or medical reasons, there will be no refund or change of tour or dates offered either.

Guided tours in foreign languages: All tours in foreign languages are subject to extra fees to cover tour guides or freelancers we may hire to honor your tour in the required language.

Travel Agents:  Travel agents are liable for 20% gratuity when their customer does not tip the driver or tour guides. We require customers’ full name and contact information from all travel agent or the tour will be cancelled. Travel agent are also liable for all overtime when their clients do not pay for, and a credit card will be needed on file. Due to high cost of conducting business in California, we barely cover our business expenses and wages, therefore, all our tours are non-commissionable rates.

Gratuity: 15 to 20% gratuity is required and customary in the USA. Generally, a tip may vary between 15% to 20% of the total purchase amount, or it can be a flat amount that is near the appropriate percent. It really depends upon the situation, and your generosity because without gratuity tour guides can’t thrive in this expensive state of California, and without tour guides, we can’t run this business. Thank you for your generosity and understanding.

Muir Woods National Monument new regulations: Once in Muir Woods National Monument, you’ll find out that it has become less crowded and even very peaceful because Muir Woods has become the first national park to require reservations in advance with special commercial and parking permits. This extra cost and in addition to the complicated reservations process turn off manty visors and tour companies from visiting Muir Woods. No one can visit or access Muir Woods anymore without prior reservations and permits. But don’t worry, thanks to our private tours and small group custom trips, we will take care of all the required arrangements and offer you a worry-free tour package, we do reserve and pay for your parking and Muir Woods permits, however, your Muir Woods tickets are not included in the tour price and will be at your charge ($10 per person, but may go up again).

Please note that tour guides are not allowed to conduct guided tours to Alcatraz or Muir Woods. Your Alcatraz and Muir Woods are self-guided tours as stated on our website (an audio self-guided tour on your own for Alcatraz prison). Also, in order to keep the cost down, we therefore do not include a drop-off at your hotel after you visit Alcatraz, so you don’t pay overtime or have a driver waiting for you while visiting Alcatraz Island. The Fisherman’s Wharf hotels are walking distance from Alcatraz landing. Public transportation is very affordable and available everywhere.

Alcatraz tours and tickets and the use of our online calendar: The only online calendar available on our website is extremely hard to manage and update on daily basis. This calendar governs all our tours and available in over 10 different languages which multiplies the number of tour options by 10! When Alcatraz tickets are sold out, we cannot simply block the calendar for these particular date(s) because this will prevent all other clients from booking any of our tours in 10 different languages, this would put us all out of business! Alcatraz represents only 1% of our tours and it’s extremely impossible to block the calendar each time Alcatraz is sold out. For that reason, we have amended these terms and conditions on our website stating clearly unequivocally the following terms regarding Alcatraz tour and tickets:

-All our tours including Alcatraz are subject to availability even if the transaction is approved. We do reserve the right to void or refund your transaction when Alcatraz tickets are sold out, this is totally out of our hands as the only provider of Alcatraz tickets and tours are governed by the U.S. National Park Service.

-We do require 8 business weeks in advance when booking our Alcatraz tour during the peaks season, holidays and week-ends. The peak season refers to the period of April to the end of October.

-We reserve the right to offer you alternative tours when Alcatraz is sold out, if you decline our offer, we simply and fully refund your transaction which takes about 10 business days before your funds are available to you as stated above under section “voided and refunded transactions” clause.

Common mistake some customers do: When Alcatraz tickets are sold out, customers rush desperately to book directly Alcatraz tour on our website without taking the time to review our terms and conditions in this regard, we are not to blame in this case as we made it extremely clear that we have no control over Alcatraz tickets when they are sold out, for that reason we do require at least 8 business weeks booking in advance!

The misconception about private tours: There a misconception about private tours. Yes, public large bus group tours are more cost-effective for the operator, than private tours. In essence, the input cost of private tours and public tours are roughly the same - both provide one driver or a tour guide, one vehicle, same trip length whilst both companies assume the same business expenses and commercial insurance liability. However, private tour operators (like ours) make 90% less profit than public group tours, because all our resources are dedicated to a small group (couples or families), whilst the pubic tour operators make 10 times more profits thanks to the volume(quantity)! We, on the other hand, focus on quality as we never share our private tours with other customers. Yet, although we provide a higher quality tour service, and incur even greater expenses in many cases, the profit margins are limited. This makes some of our private tours barely profitable due to the increasing cost and liability of conducting business in California.

– If you are subject to car or motion sickness, please consider asking your doctor for recommended medication. Some visitors underestimate this aspect and end up visiting only 50% of the tour as they suffer from this or altitude sickness and make an excessive number of stops along the way. Please consult your doctor and ensure you have the appropriate medication in advance.

– Consider leaving unnecessary luggage at your hotel and travel light so you have more room in the vehicle.

– Wear clothes and shoes suitable for walking and hiking (Snow shoes in winter are recommended, and a swimsuit to enjoy the hotel’s swimming pool and hot tub).

– Bring sunscreen, bug spray, extra memory cards, and batteries for your camera (if applicable).

– Warm layers for cooler weather and a raincoat for summer showers.

– Drink lots of water due to the high altitude and don’t hike alone, as we offer fully-guided tours.

– We are not responsible for injuries or accidents that may occur during this trip, in or out of Yosemite National Park. Please read our < href="/terms-conditions">terms and conditions for more information.

-Expect rugged terrain with narrow, steep, and very curvy hiking trails to the sequoias. Also, be prepared for a downhill hike and then back uphill to the parking lot. The trail is very steep right at the beginning on the way back up but mellows out as you get closer to the parking lot. It depends on the grove your driver will choose for you, but they all require hiking. The elevation at the trail head of both top groves is about 6,200 feet (1,860 meters). The most popular is the Tuolumne Grove of Giant Sequoias, the distance is about 2.5 miles (4 km) round trip and takes about 1.5 – 2 hours of hiking, and recommended for everybody who can hike including kids.

-California Gold Country: When Tioga Pass road (located between Yosemite and the Eastern Sierra where a major highway leads to Tahoe) is closed due to heavy snow that may start as early as October until about June or July, we will drive through the infamous, yet legendary, California Gold Country on day 2 and day 3 of your adventure.

-Please note that we may start in Lake Tahoe first, and then head to Yosemite National Park or vice versa. This will depend on the hotels’ availability, the season, the weather and road conditions. We do not work on commission, so you are welcome to book your own hotel, but if you don’t want to deal with these details, we can take care of that on your behalf when you choose the option ‘hotel included’ from our shopping cart.

Hotel Reservation: To keep costs down, we charge each guest only about $100 per night, for a three-star hotel in and around Yosemite Valley area, based on availability. However, if you have high expectations of the hotel accommodation, and wish to upgrade, we recommend that you choose your own hotel and book it directly with the required resort or hotel. The Majestic hotel (the former Awhanhee) is the only 4-star hotel in the Yosemite Valley where a suite may go from $600 to $1200 per night based on availability and the season. Please note that there are a very limited number of hotels in Yosemite, and they are often sold out 6 to 12 months in advance, so the sooner you book the better. However, we often manage to get a hotel reservation nearby Yosemite Valley, in one of the small resort or motel style hotels in the area, for reservations closer to the tour date.

Foreign Languages: Our tours are conducted in English unless otherwise indicated on your tour voucher. Some foreign languages are subject to additional fees. For all foreign languages, you must book a Private Tour and not a semi-private tour to enjoy the tour in the required language (subject to availability). Additional fees may apply on any additional foreign languages. All semi-private tours are conducted in English and can be shared with other clients. Semi-private tours will no longer be available on our website. Please book your private tour asap as our tour bilingual tour guides are booked up months in advance.

Miscellaneous: Meals and tour guide/driver gratuities are not included in our tour price unless indicated on your tour voucher or email confirmation.

Tour prices do not include additional fees including wine tasting, accommodations, and entry fees to see attractions and sites, winery tours, unless otherwise indicated on your tour voucher or email confirmation.

-We reserve the right to refuse service to any person or business who may refuse to comply with our safety instructions, our tour itinerary, or to anyone who may pose a threat to our customers and/or our tour guide-drivers. San Francisco & Alcatraz - Great Experience

I have always wanted to go to Alcatraz Island with my wife, and we finally got to do it. I consulted the online reviews and decided to go with Golden Horizon Travel. We booked Yosemite 3-day tour , Silicon Valley and San Francisco tours through them; they exceed our expectations.

SF + Alcatraz Island Tickets "The Rock"!

We took a tour with Golden Horizon as we got cancelled at last-minute by another company due to the lack of Alcatraz tickets, which we prepaid thru the interne, but, when we arrived at Fisherman's Wharf to embark the ferry, they had no reservations for us! Watch out when you book online and trust Golden Horizon reviews – they saved the day. You’ll not be disappointed.

San Francisco city tour & Alcatraz prison evening tour.

We booked the Napa Valley and Alcatraz combo tour thru Golden Horizon tour, almost 2 months in advance, and we are so glad we did. It was so hard to find availability for Alcatraz night tour. Napa Valley is beautiful, and the wines are outstanding, but Alcatraz was our favorite experience.

San Francisco city tour & Alcatraz at night experience

Unfortunately, we were not able to get same day tickets to Alcatraz Island, but our tour guide managed to get us night tickets to Alcatraz prison the next day. We were so lucky and grateful - we even booked 2 more tours with this company – they are the best! Alcatraz at night is a must-see attraction for all visitors. The rangers’ talk and the audio-walking guided tour complete each other.

San Francisco city tour &, Muir Woods and Sausalito Combo Tour

San Francisco city tour and Alcatraz now require advanced booking, which we didn’t know. I’m so glad we found this company, they accommodated our last-minute request, and provided us with tickets to muir woods and Alcatraz… Leo is an amazing tour guide.

Alcatraz at night is a must-see activity

Alcatraz at night is a must-see activity while visiting San Francisco Bay Area. The now-abandoned maximum-security prison can be visited at night, and it’s much better than the day tour. Golden Horizon and Adam deserve 10 stars!

We recommend the San Francisco and Alcatraz tour package. We got to see the best places in the city and enjoyed a free afternoon walking tour at Alcatraz Island. The views of the city and the golden gate bridge from Alcatraz are spectacular.

I highly recommend this tour company when Alcatraz tickets are sold out

We purchased the combo tour through Alcatraz Tours since the date was sold out for the solo Alcatraz Tour. Adding the city tour and Angel Island was a great trip by ferry as it took us around Alcatraz Island and Angel Island. Alcatraz island is so beautiful! I loved the Alcatraz audio tour as well. The guided tour is extremely interesting and provided an accurate picture of the story of Alcatraz prison and inmates. It was a good length of time and we got a great deal of information without becoming too long and boring. I highly recommend this tour company ‘Alcatraz Tours Inc.’ When Alcatraz tour and prison tickets are sold out, they have a reserve of Alcatraz tickets on hold purchased in advance. Their private guided city tour is a 5-star experience and worth every penny.

5 stars Travel Services: Tranquility in the hands of professionals.

Our travel agent in Veracruz Mexico booked the San Francisco tour package with hotel accommodation included. However, the online tour agency with which we originally booked our Alcatraz and Muir Woods package turned out to be a fraud, a fiasco, a company with little reliability, we were calling by phone and we have never been able to get through, they are locate overseas! Two days before leaving our country, our Alcatraz tours were canceled at the last minute and there was no way to get tickets for Alcatraz or any of the destinations because they were sold out.

Tours_reviews_Lake_Tahoe_Activity_trip_advisor

Fortunately, we found this local company Golden Horizon Travel: www.goldenhorizontravel.com and this was the only tour operator that could help us with our last minute reservations, they provided us with excellent customer service and always responded promptly in Spanish, and they even assigned us a Spanish tour guide: our both excursions were totally private and in Spanish, our tour guides were incredible, very professional, attentive and cordial and the best of all is that the agency also got us the tickets to visit Alcatraz Island and also for the Redwoods Muir Woods Park despite this last-minute booking. We also took advantage and went to Sonoma Valley and Marín County with them. This Company offers best tours and many options to choose from for all travelers; they are very professional, and they go out of their way to offer to please their customers. All the other websites we found were resellers or fake or they were not even located in California, none of them bothered to answer our phone calls or emails, and neither did they offer guided tours in Spanish. MY best advice for everyone, look for Local Operators and avoid websites and companies that are not in San Francisco! This Tour Operator is underrated and deserves more credit for their excellent customer service. 100% WORTH THE MONEY & HIGHLY RECOMMEND

Nine days: San Francisco, Alcatraz, California Monterey, Hearst Castle , and Yosemite tour package

We waited 2 weeks to review to be sure we weren't still dreaming. It was that great a time with Golden Horizon, starting with a full day in San Francisco with Mary, a native of The City, so we really experienced S.F. Then with Adam for 3 days to Monterey and Carmel, including somehow a front-row seat next to the 18th green during a PGA event a Pebble Beach without passes. He taught us to be great actors! A dream picture op for this golf fan. Then Leo took us to the coast beyond Big Sur, including a tour of Hearst Castle, then for 3 plus days in Yosemite and across the Sierras and back to S.F. All this during a stretch rare in CA of perfect weather when "Carl" never showed up. (They name the fog "Carl"). These folks couldn't have been more knowledgeable or considerate, especially getting us to every place we gave them on a considerable agenda before we even met them on day one. We saw and did far more than we expected, and they went well beyond the schedule hours every day. If this reads over-the-top, it's because our experience was way over-the-top. They certainly exceeded our expectations, just as they said they would, and we are so glad we traveled with Golden Horizon.

"Great way to see the best sights of San Francisco"

Four of us from Australia were picked up in a luxury SUV by Mary, who was just great, she felt like a family member, so friendly and very relaxed, we were never hurried. Being in the SUV was great as we got to drive down narrows treat like Lombard St (prohibited to larger vehicles).

I have to say Buddy's knowledge of the city is exceptional and his enthusiasm in sharing this knowledge is unsurpassed. I will definitely recommend Golden Horizon Travel to anyone who is looking for a way to explore the city with an articulate, educated and enthusiastic guide who without doubt made our holiday in San Francisco complete. "Best private tour"

Our private tour with Mary was the absolute highlight of our time in San Francisco. We were really able to see and enjoy so much of the city. Mary was so knowledgeable and insightful, and by the end of our day together she felt like a new friend. The tour delivered even more than we had expected and was a truly memorable experience. Your city is lovely, and Mary is a gem! We will definitely recommend this tour to our friends and will be sure to use Golden Horizons again when we return to the area.

"Best Guide & Tour Ever!"

Patricia was fantastic. She provided the most fantastic tour I've ever taken. We loved listening to her Irish accent, and she knows San Francisco inside and out. Patricia went out of her way to show us everything we wanted to see. She also takes great pictures. You won't be disappointed. We also had a great Napa and Sonoma wine tour with Jon. Golden Horizon does a great job.

"Great half-day tour and a wonderful tour guide"

My wife and I went on a half-day tour of San Francisco. Our tour guide was Patricia. She was extremely nice to us and very knowledgeable. Her passion for the city was obvious. We had a great time, learned a lot, and got some awesome recommendations for dinning.

"Great intro to the city"

We took a morning SF city tour with Tom. Best choice we could have made for our first day! He made sure to stop at all of the major sights, giving us a lot of "insider" information about each place. He was very flexible, allowing us to take extra time at some vistas, and take extra pictures at others. Great combination of driving and exploring - so much to see that a 1/2-day tour is the way to go to get a flavor of what to visit more in-depth another day. Highly Recommended and Well worth the price!

"Lovely lady and a great tour"

We had Patricia as our guide to show us San Francisco in an SUV. Patricia was chatty, knowledgeable, very friendly and interested in the tour. She made an effort to show us everything we wanted to see and more things we were not even aware of. I recommend this company and Patricia to any visitors to this wonderful city.

"Private SUV Tour"

We booked a private SUV tour and as first-time visitors to SF it gave the whole family a wonderful and insightful introduction to an amazing City. We had a great time with our guide, Patricia, she was not only very knowledgeable but she made a real effort to make every moment special and she was good fun, running over by 30 minutes to make sure we didn’t miss anything. One of the best tours that we have had and the whole family thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

There isn't enough words to describe what a great tour we had! Tom was AMAZING. He was professional, knowledgeable and extremely passionate about the city and making sure the tour was everything we wanted. He made the tour personal to us, after finding out my Husband is military he made sure we knew about the military history etc. Throughout the planning process the company was great, always responded to my emails, even when we changed our hotel last minute, it was no problem and Tom was there with a huge warm greeting!!! Thank you again Tom and Golden Horizons tours, My husband is often deployed and we have rare opportunities to have a mini vacation and you made our day thank you thank you!!!!!

"Best Decision- Best Tour Ever!"

Without any hesitation I recommend Golden Horizon Travel to all! My family's amazing day/tour with our guide, Adam, to wine country was 5+ out of 5!! He arranged perfect tastings for our family, taking into account the varied interests of the four of us. It's obvious he is passionate about his work, which certainly shows not only in how he handles situations but his interactions with us as well. Knowledgeable he is! We appreciated how he so freely, casually shared and explained to educate us. And, we appreciated the spur of the moment short, side trips that enhanced our memorable day. This was my favorite day of our San Francisco vacation. Adam put a smile not only on my face, but also in my heart. We were blessed to share the hours with him!!! Thanks, Linda

Jon was a FIVE STAR guide! And, his all-day private SUV tour of San Francisco, Muir Woods, & Sausalito was a FIVE STAR tour all the way! The best I can remember anywhere, and that's saying something, considering all we've done all over the world…Jon keeps an ongoing narrative about EVERYTHING, EVERYWHERE. He's brilliant. We could listen to that voice all day. And, one would never imagine he had a care in the world outside bringing his client the most memorable experience possible. We will never forget your most EXCELLENT tour! Nor your company. Nor Jon, for that matter. Thank you VERY much for that day.

We had a 12 hour wait until our next flight in San Francisco. We arrived early in the morning, went first to Alcatraz and after that the tour guide, Anton, from GHT came and picked us up by the Pier. My wife and I joined our two traveling companions on two custom half-day tours with Golden Horizon and our fab Kiwi guide, Jon. On day 1, after our arrival on a Princess cruise ship, we did a full city tour, ending with Jon dropping us off for a night-time visit to Alcatraz. City tour by SUV, the best way to go

One advantage you have with the SUV tour is that you get to drive on Lombard St where tour buses are not allowed. Jon also took us right under the Golden Gate bridge where no other tourists were around. Thanks so much for a great experience!

San Francisco and Alcatraz

Our private tour with Mary was EXCELLENT and FUN!!! Mary drove us around in San Francisco and told us about history and contemporary "fun knowing". She is grown up in SF and had great knowledge. Before the trip, our kids complained that 4 hours were too long, but when the tour was over they thought the 4 hours went too fast.

It was a perfect start to our SF stay that covered the entire SF and we learned a lot and we had fun. . My partner did not have a ticket to Alcatraz but Mary managed with the impossible to find a ticket in the ferry zone, which we appreciated a lot !! Going on a tour with Mary was optimal! Comfortable car, only we in the car, very personal. Since Mary knew Sweden and Finland meant that we clicked fine from the very firts moment!!

All day private tour of San Francisco and afternoon Alcatraz tour

Alcatraz was fascinating and Golden Horizon was able to accommodate us with tickets on short notice due to a cancellation. Our full day private driving tour of San Francisco with Tom was totally delightful. Not only was Tom, our guide, fully informed about the nuances of the city history but a terrific conversationalist providing a very relaxed and pleasant day. AND, he dropped us at a local Dim Sum café for an excellent and very reasonable lunch. We would recommend the entire experience as a 5-star excellent time.

San Francisco and Alcatraz Tour Private SUV Tour with Mary

We had a blast on this tour and Mary was a terrific tour guide! We got to see nearly everything we wanted to see in San Francisco in one day - without having to plan a route or drive amongst the locals. Mary is a San Francisco native and is extremely knowledgeable about the city and its history. Having the tour guide handle the Alcatraz tickets is another nice perk that will make your visit to San Francisco that more stress-free. Be sure to let her know if you like "Star Wars" - she will have an awesome, unlisted stop waiting for you!

Muir Woods/SF Alcatraz

The wife and I took two private tours the first was San Francisco/Alcatraz and the second was Muir Woods/Sausalito. Our tour guide Jon had a wealth of knowledge of the history of San Francisco as well as Muir Woods and Alcatraz. Our whole experience was awesome! we were allowed to make the changes we wanted to, which was great it gave us more time in Muir Woods as well as the other places that we wanted to see. It was a wonderful surprise when Jon took us to a couple of places that were not on the itinerary. I would highly recommend any of the tours we took as well as any others Golden Horizon has to offer as I'm sure they are just as wonderful. I know that if we are ever back in the area, we will certainty use this service again. Thank you for the great experience.

Our trip to San Francisco

I booked the 1/2 day San Francisco tour including tickets to Alcatraz. That morning, Mary met my husband and I in the lobby of our hotel. She was already waiting for us when we came out of the elevator a little early! Picked us up in a spotlessly clean black suburban. We toured the city in style, so thankful Mary is a great driver because I would have hated for my husband to have to maneuver through that madness! By the time the tour was over we had learned so much history we would have never learned on our own. Mary is a local, and her stories really added to the tour. Before she left us at the ferry to Alcatraz she gave us our tickets along with a wealth of information to help us finish our trip successfully. We missed her and talked about her for the rest of our trip!

Alcatraz island prison was on our bucket before we travelled to san Francisco

Alcatraz island prison was on our bucket list before we even traveled to California, we wanted to go there so badly, and we did, we are so glad we took the time to visit Alcatraz island. Alcatraz prison may seem morbid and awkward because of all the sad and morbid stories of solitary confinement we all heard and read here or there, but more you learn about it from the audio guided tour, more get inserted in the story of Alcatraz solitary confinements, the infamous escape from Alcatraz, and learn the story of the prison and about the inmates from the officers own perspective. I highly recommend the combination Alcatraz island and San Francisco city tour, you don’t have to worry about how to get Alcatraz tickets and how to get there, these guys are very professionals and made our trip very enjoyable.

We visited Alcatraz prison at night - it’s Spooky!

We traveled from San José, Costa Rica to San Francisco in California to visit Alcatraz Island and Yosemite National Park. Initially, we could not find a specialized tour guide in Spanish to take us to Yosemite park and to see the giant sequoias. But thank God we found this tour company. We were lucky as they also had tickets to Alcatraz Island at night, even though it was sold out everywhere else they managed to secure our booking for the nigh tour the same day. What a great surprise to discover that the booking agent of the company spoke fluently Spanish, she was very friendly and helpful. Not only did she get us a private tour of Yosemite in Spanish with a bilingual guide, but she also managed to get us Alcatraz tickets for the night tour at a last-minute. That was totally unexpected and super cool. We cannot thank you enough for your excellent customer service and for making the extra effort to get book Alcatraz tickets for us despite this short notice. The night tour of Alcatraz is a bit “spooky”, but very interesting, the US park rangers accommodated us with only a small number of visitors, guided us through the prison and provided a lot of historical information about Alcatraz prison and famous prisoners like Al Capone, as well as the story about the escape from Alcatraz” El misterio de la fuga de Alcatraz”.

Alcatraz night tour is a must-do but book your tickets WELL in advance!

We booked our Alcatraz night trip with Alcatraz tours in February, but we were not visiting San Francisco until late May. This was the right thing to do as all Alcatraz night tours got sold out in March! The ferry trip to Alcatraz island was quite nice and took us less than 20 minutes to reach Alcatraz island. We really enjoyed this night excursion of the prison. No, it was not creepy at all. Dress appropriately/ bring layers - it gets cold and foggy out there.

Alcatraz prison night tour is awesome

My wife and I booked our Alcatraz prison tickets online through this tour company, combined with a trip to Napa Valley wineries. We love beer, but we wanted to try some wines for a change. So, we tasted great deal of red and white wines in Napa wine country. Then, we drove back to San Francisco and got dropped off at Pier 33 to take the ferry to Alcatraz island. Alcatraz night tour was on our bucket-list before we even travelled to California, we were so excited when they dropped us off at Alcatraz ferry lines. The night tour boat departed from the dock at 3:50pm. We enjoyed great views of the city of San Francisco and the Golden Gate bridge as we were sailing to Alcatraz island. Once at the island, US park rangers split visitors into groups and started the night guided tour at different times. If you have difficulty walking up hills, they have a tram you can ride both ways at no extra cost. The narration of the self-guided tour is really informative and exciting. We highly recommend Alcatraz prison night tour to all travelers. The only thing I didn’t like is that many sections of Alcatraz island are closed to the public at night unlike the day tour. That’s why they only allow one group per night, I guess they want to they keep it under control. Use this tour company, you won’t be disappointed.

Alcatraz night tour with our kids - absolutely excellent and worth every penny

We booked the night tour with Alcatraz Tours, and that was an excellent tour experience. Really well organized and informative. We learned a lot about Alcatraz prison on the night tour, and I can thoroughly recommend Alcatraz night tour even for families with kids. Wear comfortable flat walking shoes and extra layers as it gets chilly on the island, and I also recommend a flashlight and an extra charger for your smart phone. That’s was an excellent trip for the whole family and worth the money and time.

Wonderful night tour experience like a “fairy tale”.

Wonderful night tour experience with lots of history and interesting stories. Alcatraz prison is not like any other jail where inmates could escape from so easily. We realized how hard it must have been to get out of ‘The Rock’ and still wondering how those 3 guys escaped Alcatraz at night! It’s like a ‘fairy tale’, spooky but in a good way… the pace of the tour was just right and well done.

“Muir Woods and Alcatraz combo tour”

Our Muir Woods & Alcatraz combo tour was exactly what we needed as we only had one day in San Francisco before we traveled to Napa Valley for a wedding we were invited to. The tour is well worth the money that you spend. The big redwood trees in Muir Woods forest are impressive but the forest was a bit crowded as well as Alcatraz island. However, this combo tour must be on everyone’s bucket-list. Both places are very popular and worth the money. I would recommend starting the tour early to visit the redwoods and beat the bus tours and large crowds. This way you get to enjoy peace and quality time in Muir Woods before it gets too busy.

Alcatraz prison is a former maximum-security prison located on Alcatraz Island, but the island is much smaller than we through. The trip by ferry took us about 20 minutes from the Fisherman’s Wharf to the island. I recommend Alcatraz electric carts for those who can’t walk uphill. My grandmother couldn’t walk all the way up to the prison, but their electric cart was very convenient for her. We took more time in the prison and returned to the Fisherman’s Wharf in late afternoon. We also enjoyed the Fisherman’s Wharf souvenir shops, seafoods restaurants and got to see the seals there. I recommended in this tourist area after Alcatraz tour.

Definitely a 5-star: Alcatraz and redwoods experience

Whether you live in San Francisco Bay Area or visiting San Francisco from the US or overseas, this day trip is a must-do for all ages and even for folks with mobility issues. Alcatraz island and prison are one of the most handicap accessible tours and places I've ever been on. Alcatraz guided tour is amazing. Yet, it can be a little confusing unless you follow the guided trail step by step. The ferry ride to Alcatraz island offers beautiful views of San Francisco downtown, the islands in the bay like Angel island, Treasure island and bridges like the Golden Gate bridge. Be on time for the ferry departure or you get turned away as they only allow the exact time and departure stated on each ticket. Alcatraz tickets are so valuable and hard to find, we were lucky we got a last-minute cancellation from Alcatraz Tours, otherwise we would have missed out on the best attraction in California. Many visitors show up at last minute by the ferry terminal looking for tickets and willing to pay any price to get their hands-on tickets to Alcatraz, but these rare tickets and get sold out weeks and months in advance.

Definitely a 5-star experience for this Alcatraz and redwoods combo tour. Our tour guide drove us away from Muir Woods traffic jams to a small forest of redwoods in Marin County. We were the only one a roaming through these tall and towering redwoods. It was so nice to enjoy nature without putting up with traffic and a horde of people pushing and shoving like in Muir Woods. I’ve been there, and I honestly prefer these alternative groves of redwoods we went to visit in Marin county. This tour company and tour guide are highly recommended.

Awesome Alcatraz island & Redwoods combo tour

This day trip to Alcatraz island is awesome regardless how foggy the bay area can be. We got to Pier 33 on time, and the tour guide took care of our Alcatraz tickets. We didn’t have to worry about parking or reservation, as he showed us around before we embarked on the ferry to Alcatraz prison. There is a good self-guided audio tour of the cells and we could hear the guards and inmates’ voices in the background. It’s like living the experience and getting the feel of how this morbid and remote federal prison operated. Don’t forget to pick up the headphones as you enter the prison on top of the hill. My mom can’t walk so we hopped on the so called “SEAT” electric tram (Sustainable Easy Access Transport). Alcatraz island is a national park - there are park rangers on hand who help visitors with all kinds of information. I recommend that you book this redwood and Alcatraz excursion in advance. We had a hard time to find ferry tickets to Alcatraz until we landed on this website www.alcatraztoursf.com. Their combo tour is worth the money and saved us the hassle and stress. The operator was very helpful, and their tour guide was knowledgeable and professional, yet very funny. He adjusted the tour to our kid’s mood and crankiness. Don’t go to Muir Woods forest. I heard terrible things about this overcrowded place. Let this tour company take you to this hidden forest of redwoods somewhere nearby San Francisco in Marin Count. I can’t remember the name of this redwood forest, but we were the only ones there when we got there, the trees are massive and impressive, plus the landscape is picturesque. Last, get inline early to Alcatraz ferry terminal so you can get the best seat in the house on the third floor!

Muir Woods and Alcatraz combo tour

Our Muir Woods and Alcatraz combo tour was exactly what we needed as we only had one day in San Fran. The tour was well organized, and we certainly got our money's worth … Muir woods national monument definitely worth a detour. This remote park of big redwoods is very beautiful and a fantastic option for families with young children. I recommend this combo tour of Alcatraz and redwoods. It is worth the money and saves a lot of hassle and worries, as both places require special permits and advanced reservations.

ALCATRAZ IS ABOVE EXPECTATIONS

Despite Muir Woods traffic and large crowds, we enjoyed our trip. But we loved Alcatraz island even more. This is a must-see attraction when vising the Bay area. I recommend this tour company. The tour guide and this company are awesome, very reliable and responsive. We had a good experience and the tour with their tour guide was informative and fun.

“Awesome bay cruise around Alcatraz Island”

This is a great alternative tour experience when Alcatraz tickets are sold out. We were disappointed as we didn’t manage to get Alcatraz tickets. Next time, we will anticipate and book Alcatraz tickets in advance. We were happy with this trip, as it combined our city private tour and the ferry cruise around Alcatraz island. We managed to get to see the city top attractions in a half-day tour, and that was the perfect way to do it. The cruise ship trip was over an hour, a trip that took us in the San Francisco bay, around Alcatraz Island, and under the Golden Gate Bridge. We had a trip the next day to Hearst Castle with this tour company, and it was our last day in California. We had a blast in Big Sur, and we enjoyed Hearst castle tour very much. It was a long day trip, but well worth it.

“Alcatraz Island is outstanding, but book your tickets in advance”

Alcatraz Island tour is outstanding, and the prison is a stunning place. This is my favorite attraction in San Francisco Bay Area. Book your Alcatraz ferry tickets in advance, as these valuable tickets get sold out weeks and months in advance, we booked our Alcatraz tickets two months in advance. Tour companies are obviously not allowed to sell Alcatraz tickets individually anymore, so we had to book Alcatraz prison tickets combined with a city tour. Our tour guide, Jonathan, was amazing and fun. We highly recommend this hassle-free combo tour. It’s fun, informative and exciting and worth every penny. I got to say, the energy and the impression you get when vising Alcatraz is something you need to experience for yourself.

“The Beautiful Island of Alcatraz”

From the city tour to Alcatraz Island, we and our kids had an amazing adventure. It is a bit cold in San Francisco Bay in summer ironically. But were very interested in the criminology and forensic stories of Alcatraz and San Quintin prison like Charles Manson, the Zodiac, Fong “Little Pete” Ching, Zebra killers, Felix Mitchell, the Unabomber, Scott Peterson, and Clarence and John Anglin and Frank Morris and their famous ‘Escape from Alcatraz’. Wow! the feeling visitors get when stepping onto Alcatraz island from the ferry boat is quite eerie and a bit creepy, I know, but very exciting and interesting.

“Reserve Alcatraz tickets in advance when visiting San Francisco”

Book your Alcatraz tickets months in advance before you travel to San Francisco. This is a must-see tourist attraction when visiting San Francisco and Northern California. A police officer from South Africa, who traveled with us on Alcatraz ferry, had a stop-over at SFO international airport. He joined us just to visit Alcatraz prison, and we had fun together. Dress in layers. Ironically summer is not warm in San Francisco Bay, as weather is cool and gets foggy in the Bay. The views of Alcatraz from San Francisco are spectacular. This combo tour is a must-do and it saved us time and money. Thank you, Mary. You are a great tour guided and very funny - our kids loved your jokes and stories about Alcatraz prison and San Francisco neighborhood.

“Alcatraz prison worth a visit and above expectation”

Alcatraz prison is just as portrayed in the Hollywood films about Frank Morris (a movie starring Clint Eastwood) about Alcatraz maximum-security prison. The cell as seen in the Clint Eastwood movie “Escape from Alcatraz” is still preserved. No trip to San Francisco is complete without visiting Alcatraz Island. It took me 2 tours to Alcatraz before I felt the strong atmosphere and energy you get after stepping off Alcatraz cruises ferry and onto the dock. This city tour combined with Alcatraz is an exceptional combo trip, I recommend for all visitors.

“Alcatraz and San Francisco, the best worry-free tour package”

We were lucky to find availability for the Alcatraz tour. We booked this all-inclusive San Francisco guided tour combined with Alcatraz as a tour package. It was a worry-free reservation all included, and the perfect way to indulge in San Francisco if you have limited time. It was a convenient, affordable, and fulfilling combo trip of the city top attractions and a self-guided tour of Alcatraz prison. A must-do when visiting the City by the Bay, and worth every penny you spend. Our tour guide drove us up to the Alcatraz ferry terminal, redeemed our Alcatraz tour voucher and issues our ferry tickets. We had an extra 45 minutes before the ferry departure, so we had a quick snack at Alcatraz cafe at Pier 33, be prepared before you embark on Alcatraz ferry, no grocery or food service is available on Alcatraz!

“Alcatraz tour should be on everyone’s bucket list”

This is an incredible tourist attraction of San Francisco Bay area. If you plan on visiting San Francisco you got to add Alcatraz prison tour to your bucket-list, more than Muir Woods or Napa. Alcatraz Island history itself is a very interesting story, before it was ever used as a federal prison. How anyone could even escape from this remote Island and maximum-security prison? The audio headphone guided tour is informative, the stories and sounds of prison officers makes the guided tour so real and the story comes to live. I took amazing pictures to show my friends in Japan. This trip is wonderful and recommended even for solo travelers like myself.

“Great combo tour opportunity of Alcatraz prison”

This was our first visit to California and San Francisco. We did a city tour with this tour company and found out how hard it was to get Alcatraz ticket., Luckily, our tour guide Patricia, who was so professional and friendly, called the company and arranged last-minute tickets for us to visit Alcatraz Island. The experience lived up to our expectations and the reviews we had read about Alcatraz tours turned out to be so true. We recommend this combo tour to all families with kids like us, who have no time to scan through all these websites out there looking for ticket’s availability. This is a very serious and professional tour company, and they exceeded our expectations

“San Francisco Alcatraz combo tour”

Book your Alcatraz tickets immediately when you plan your trip to San Fran. We had initially planned to book Alcatraz Island night tour, but it’s impossible to get due to limited availability. The day tour to Alcatraz was not bad at all. The fascinating story of Alcatraz prison is phenomenal, and the city tour completed this package trip. That’s was a good company to work with from the moment we booked on their website to the day of the trip. And their tour guides are fun and professional.

“Top Notch 5-Star City Private Tour with Alcatraz Prison”

Don’t waste your time looking for Alcatraz tickets and availability. Book with this local tour company, and you will not be disappointed. We booked the full day San Francisco city tour by SUV. The city tour exceeded our expectations and our tour guide, Pat, certainly delivered. Superb service and highly recommended, you’ll be in good hands. We recommend the private city tour where you can stop anywhere you want and visit the monument or neighborhood of your choice were bus tours are restricted. We also recommend Alcatraz audio guide to explore this former jail. It’s fun and informative.

Fascinating combo tour of San Francisco and Alcatraz

Reserve Alcatraz tickets in advance, this tour was so much better than I was expecting. You get a ferry ride from San Francisco Pier 33 to the Alcatraz island and then you get to visit Alcatraz former prison. It was rainy and foggy that day, but still well worth the trip. The trip was very well run, and we were welcomed in the dock by a ranger who let us know some key information and rules before visiting the prison. Don’t forget to grab something to eat before heading to Alcatraz, as there is no food service on the island. You can stay as long as you want on Alcatraz island, but don’t miss the last ferry. I think they have like one ferry every 30 minutes. Alcatraz had a reputation for being the toughest prison in the country. How did all these top criminals like Al Capone survive it? I recommend doing the audio guided tour twice, if you have time. It’s so informative, but too much information can be a bit overwhelming for first time visitors.

Why everybody is so crazy about Alcatraz prison?

Why everybody is so crazy about Alcatraz prison tour? Alcatraz Island is dim, cold, morbid, and crowded. We felt nothing, seen nothing, heard nothing that made it so appealing to our group, a bit overrated in our opinion. Why have criminals become victims and stars? They deserved to be incarcerated in Alcatraz prison! Some visitors were even asking for autographs from a former inmate of Alcatraz who was there that day, but this makes no sense to me. But I can understand some visitors who are interested in criminology. I’m giving a 4-star review not for Alcatraz tours but for the city experience with our tour guide Alan. He made our city tour very exciting and fun. He was very accommodating and attentive to our needs. He stopped the car half-way day down on Lombard street to take photographs of us in the middle of the street and took us to visit the fortune cookies in Chinatown. That was fun! I also recommend stopping at the ferry building, this is a great place for the foodies and wine lovers, and we had a great time there.

“Alcatraz and San Francisco, the best part of our trip to California”

Alcatraz Island is an incredible tourist attraction. We did the tour with our kids, and they loved it too. The audio tour was well done, we took tons of pictures, hanged out and enjoyed the views of the city from Alcatraz Island. The views are spectacular from Alcatraz island. Go to the officers’ garden side that overlooks the Golden Gate bridge but watch out for the old steps. They are very steep and have no guards. Army officers’ spouses who were stationed on the Island in the early 1900s, planted all kinds of vegetables there (The beauty on the beast). We skipped some places while touring the city so we could take our kids to visit California Academy of Sciences located in the Golden Gate park. This museum is very underrated. They got a World-class Aquarium, planetarium, and natural history Museum. The guided tour inside and on the existing roof appeals to all ages, and it was a wonderful experience. I highly recommend it for families with young kids.

Alcatraz prison tour is very interesting and enjoyable

This was a very interesting tour we took to Alcatraz Island. We had all heard of Alcatraz and had some sketchy knowledge of its history. However, they have done a really good job of telling the real, non-Hollywood, history of the island prison. This tour company is well organized – everything from the city guided tour to the lines waiting to get on the ferry, embarking and disembarking, and setting up the visitors with audio tour headsets. You have an assigned time to leave on the ferry, but the return to the mainland is at your leisure. The self-guiding audio tour was well done, and you can move at your own pace. This can help you avoid pockets of crowds. While there are parts of the island closed to the public, you pretty much have free reign to wander and explore the public areas at your own pace.

It is a bit of hike up the road to the entrance to the prison and beginning of the tour. There are also steps to maneuver once inside. This could be problematic for those with mobility issues. They do have a shuttle or tram that can take visitors up and back down. So, the tour can accommodate most visitors, even if some areas would not be accessible.

Definitely worth the visit. Consider booking this San Francisco and Alcatraz prison combo tour. It only takes a couple of hours after the city tour and is an interesting spot to visit. Thank you, Alcatraz Tours, and many thanks to our tour guide Victor. You guys are so passionate and knowledgeable. I am very glad we didn’t book with the other websites who sell tours all over the world. They have nothing local and so messy with no customer service.

We recommend your company and tour guides.

Alcatraz Island Tour: Well Worth The Time & Money!

I have been to San Francisco many times but never went to Alcatraz. This was a VERY IMPRESSIVE experience! Everyone should do it once. We booked Alcatraz and UC Berkeley Campus combo tour with our kids. It was a very well organized and worry-free combo tour, all included. Berkeley is a beautiful city and the University of California is an amazing place to visit... Alcatraz tour itself is a bucket-list destination which I can recommend to all visitors. Alcatraz prison audio self-guided tour really offers lots of detail about the prison, who was housed there and the overall history of Alcatraz ‘The Rock’. We actually met the author of a book who was once incarcerated at Alcatraz during the escape and breakout. Very, very interesting.

Need to get tickets well in advance! The hike up the hill is pretty steep, but if you take your time, anyone can do it.

I Highly recommend this combo tour for families with kids!

Great, humbling experience with awesome views of San Francisco from Alcatraz

This is a must do when visiting San Francisco Bay area. It begins with a custom city tour of San Francisco top sights and places all included...then followed by the ferry ride to the island, which offers exceptional views of the Bay, the Golden Gate, and the SFO skyline. Would advise you to line up early to board the ferry to get good seats. Once you reach the island, after a brief introduction, you are free to roam the island. My advice would be to go straight to the top for the audio tour, which is the best part of the experience. The tour is awesome, and you learn so much about the prison life. Once you are done with that, you can walk around to other places like the gardens and the industries. Be careful with the return ferry, as the lines are usually very long to get on. Enjoy the views while coming back as well.

Alcatraz tickets are often sold out weeks in advance. We were lucky that these guys accommodated us with our last-minute booking...this is a reliable local tour company and highly recommended.

Atlanta, Georgia,

Big Redwoods and an excellent horseback ride on the beach for our whole family!

Even though the wooded trails were a bit wet for us to ride due to the fog, the experience was amazing, and we all enjoyed it very much. The horses looked happy, well cared for, and these were some of the best-behaved horses we’ve ever interacted with. The staff was very friendly. It didn’t take us too long to reach a laid-back beach, so peaceful and beautiful.

Tours_reviews_Lake_Tahoe_Activity_trip_advisor

After the horseback ride, our fun and very nice tour guide drove us to Santa Cruz where we had lunch in a restaurant located on the Wharf. We ordered a seafood platter which was fresh and yummy, and the views made it the perfect location for our family.

For me personally, the highlight of our trip was our tour of a beautiful forest of big redwood trees in Santa Cruz mountains. I’ve been to Muir Woods before, but this state park was less crowded than Muir Woods and the redwood trees are much bigger and older in Santa Cruz mountains.

On the way back to our hotel in San Francisco, the tour guide made a quick stop at Apple’s new headquarter in Silicon Valley. We visited the visitor center and the store (while our son was sneaking out to fly his drone over Apple’s new and amazing architecture “it looks like a spaceship from the sky”.)

We highly recommend this outdoor adventure and this business.

Alcatraz prison tickets combined with a city tour

My husband and I decided to book the combo tour of Alcatraz and city for our parents and in laws. We were a group of 7 persons, and our local tour guide was amazing and very knowledgeable. Booking a private SUV tour versus the public bus tour is the ideal way to see 4-times more sights and attractions than the bus tour option, and you get out as often as you want to visit places like Lombard street, the painted ladies, china beach, fort Miley, mission murals... we had lots of fun. San Francisco is a beautiful city and Alcatraz island prison tour is a must-see for everyone. This tour company was the only provider who had Alcatraz tickets available as all other tour companies we called were sold out. Alcatraz prison tickets are so hard to get, so watch out and ensure you do book them in advance. Also, be sure to eat before you get on Alcatraz ferry as there was no food available on Alcatraz island.

Bring extra layers and expect fog and wind in the middle of the San Francisco bay.

An awesome horseback ride on the beach and Alcatraz tour

We got desperate as we couldn’t get our hand on Alcatraz tickets. Alcatraz Island tour and ferry tickets were sold out when we tried to book them online (6 weeks in advance). We tried every tour company in San Fran, but no luck. Until we landed on www.alcatraztoursf.com and they made our day. We couldn’t believe it.

We had to book a combo tour to get our hand on Alcatraz prison tickets, so we signed up for a horseback ride on the beach. It took place in Half- Moon Bay, and although it was a cool day it was worth it. The scenery along the Pacific Coast Highway is breathtaking.

This tour company is very reliable, and their tour guide Mary was amazing! We felt like we had a friend in town - it was more than a tour - a real and fun experience. She even drove us through the Golden Gate Park, and we stopped for a snack and beer tasting at the Beach Chalet, an ocean front restaurant with stunning view of ocean and the beach.

Alcatraz and Silicon Valley worry-free combo tour

We wanted to cover 2 iconic places during our stay at a VRBO near San Francisco. Alcatraz island and Stanford University were on our list, and we did just that. This Alcatraz prison and Silicon Valley was a short-day trip and was a very good fit for us and our tight schedule. Our sons get bored quickly with long day tours, but they were rather interested in both places. The guided tour we had at Stanford was totally private and we were transported in a golf cart as my husband is a Vet and was injured in Iraq. This was the ideal way to cover as much as possible of Stanford huge campus and without walking a lot . Both tours boosted our teens’ motivation and they started asking more question afterwards.

This combo package worth the money and highly recommended

We visited Apple’s new campus, and the so-called Apple ‘spaceship’ architecture is amazing. The visitor center is well designed, and we had a guided tour with an Apple employee on site. We also visited google, Palo Alto and Stanford. I wish we had the whole day, but we had to head back to San Francisco to get there on time for our Alcatraz prison tour, which was the highlight of our day adventure.

Fantastic horseback ride near Muir Woods and Stinson Beach

We were picked up by Pat, a nice Irish lady and a wonderful tour guide. She drove us through Mill Valley where we stopped for breakfast before we visited Muir Woods - a peaceful small forest with big and towering redwood trees. The trail through Muir Woods is flat and easy, and there are paved paths for those wanting a casual stroll or more challenging trails. We did both trails along the creek, and our kids had no problem with the twisty paths and stairs although towering redwood trees.

After Muir Woods, we had a lunch break at Stinson Beach, which was a great place for a picnic lunch. We enjoyed the delicious fish tacos we ordered, everything was very fresh and sourced locally from Marin county. Near Stinson beach is Bolinas, where we and our kids went on horseback riding in the forest. I’m glad it was only an hour; we could not take more than that as this was our first horseback riding experience.

That was an unforgettable family adventure in Marin county.

Thank you, Pat, for the good memories.

10 stars!: Nature and tranquility at its best!

This half-day private tour to Muir Woods was the perfect way to spend the morning away from the hustle and bustle of the city, and without traveling too far. Muir Woods is definitely worth the trip. Never pass on the opportunity to visit Muir Woods national monument if you are ever in the San Francisco Bay area. The park is less crowded in the morning, and we were very lucky and enjoyed it before it got busy. All in all, a very quiet and wonderful experience.

Our tour guide made this trip even more enjoyable as she took us to have a snack at Stinson Beach. The road is scenic and offers breathtaking views along the coast.

Plan your visit to Muir Woods and book in advance - rangers are rude!

We found out the hard way that Muir Woods park service has started implementing a new and paid reservation system, in addition to the park entrance fees ($15 per person). We tried to park our rental car there, but the park ranger in front of the gate very rudely turned us away and told us to get out... and book online. The parking there is now for tour companies and commercial use only and requires special permits which sucks.

Anyway, since there is no cell phone service at Muir Woods, we had to drive back to Sausalito, and park our rental car there. We were glad to get hold of this tour company who accommodated us with such last-minute booking and picked us up in Sausalito.

We finally managed to visit Muir Woods in the late afternoon, and that was for the best. The forest was almost empty, and it was definitely more peaceful. I recommend this company and Adam, our very nice tour guide. He made us feel very comfortable and we forgot our bad experience earlier with the US park rangers.

Definitely, do plan your visit to Muir Woods and book in advance!

The Best Alcatraz Island Napa Valley wineries combo tour

What a fabulous way to spend the day in California wine country and Alcatraz island. The driver, Leo, was an expert tour guide with a fun and outgoing personality. He made us feel so comfortable from the first minute we met him the lobby of our hotel. The SUV is luxurious and clean and allowed us access to places not allowed to van tours or large vehicles. He even started the day by driving us through Lombard street - a beautiful neighborhood with gorgeous flowers. We also made a stop at the Golden Gate bridge on the way to the Napa Valley.

This tour company has a distinguished relationship with excellent wineries in Napa Valley. We managed to visit 2 small wineries located off-the-beaten-path, that are not open to group and bus tours. We had a walking tour inside the cellars and cave, and we ended up with a food and wine paring experience. This is the best way to learn how wine is made and how to taste the wine and pair it with right food. This private tour is the best way to go. You get to avoid commercial wineries and bus tours if you are looking for quality time. It was not cheap but worth every penny.

When we got back to the San Francisco, we could barely see Alcatraz island due to dense fog which is obviously very common in the summer. The ferry ride to the island was fun and short. Alcatraz prison audio tour is a must and highly recommended. This was best tour and tour guide we ever had. He exceeded our expectations.

A family safari adventure combined with San Francisco and Alcatraz

We booked this 2-day tour package through Alcatraz Tours. On day one, we visited San Francisco and Alcatraz, and on day 2 we spend most of the day in Sonoma county where we visited a wild safari park.

We got there around 10 am, and the safari tour guide walked us first around the main area by the entrance where exotic birds and wild the animals could be seen and approached. Some animals loved to pose for close-ups, especially the monkeys, giraffes and flamingos. After 45 minutes walking tour, we drove in a double decker safari style jeep. This was a great experience for our kids. We have never seen them so excited. The entire jeep tour was about 3 hours or so and we saw everything from monkeys, cheetahs, hippos, zebras, bob cats, flamingos, giraffes and even parrots. Our family loved this safari adventure, and this is a great getaway for family with kids and highly recommended.

After the safari tour, we had lunch in Napa, and our passionate tour guide drove us to the Jelly Belly beans factory. This was the perfect way to end this day trip. Many thanks to our amazing tour guide, Buddy, he is the best!

46 Things to do in San Francisco at Night (From a Local)

* This article contains affiliate links, which help run this site at no extra cost to you.

TL;DR: If you’re only looking for a few options, the 4 best things to do in San Francisco at night are exploring the city on a sightseeing tour, grabbing drinks at a themed bar, enjoying a museum after dark, and going to a unique show:

  • My favorite sightseeing tours at night are the Alcatraz Night Tour , the Love Night VW Bus Tour, or a ghost tour .
  • Some options for grabbing drinks at a themed bar include Bourbon & Branch, Smuggler’s Cove, Tonga Room, and Local Edition.
  • For a museum after dark experience, visit the Exploratorium or California Academy of Sciences .
  • A few options for unique shows in San Francisco include a drag show at Asia SF, a magic show at the Marrakech Magic Theater , or one of the unique SF Symphony Film Nights .

San Francisco is an interesting city at night. Depending on which neighborhood you’re in once the sun sets, you might think of the city as completely dead or a great place to party.

San Francisco isn’t like New York where you can go anywhere and find nightlife options or events going on in the majority of the city, no matter what day of the week it is.

things to do in San Francisco at night

Sometimes you have to know where to look for fun things to do in San Francisco at night.

That’s one of the great things about the city though, there’s a little something for everyone around San Francisco.

With locals who are as equally into outdoor activities as they are with going out to trendy new bars on the weekends, there’s a good mix of options for things to do around the city.

So, let’s get into it!

I broke up this article by the different types of activities you can do in San Francisco at night, depending on what you’re looking for.

Table of Contents

Tourist Attractions to Experience at Night in San Francisco

If you’re going to San Francisco and looking to get in more sightseeing, there are quite a few tourist activities you can enjoy at night that locals like to partake in too.

Alcatraz Night Tour

Alcatraz night tour - if you're going to san francisco

Alcatraz Cruises offers an Alcatraz Night Tour that is all kinds of creepy and cool.

If you want to experience the famous prison for a couple of hours when it’s completely pitch black outside, grab one of the Alcatraz Night tour tickets from Alcatraz Cruises.

The night tours run Tuesday through Saturday and leave from Pier 33 at 3:50 pm during fall/winter and 5:55 pm and 6:30 pm during spring/summer.

Make sure to book in advance, especially during the summer because these tickets are limited and sell out quickly.

This is one of those unique night activities in the Bay Area, so don’t miss out if you have a chance to go.

You can purchase tickets for the night tour here .

Ride a Cable Car

Although you can ride a San Francisco cable car during the day as well, it’s actually much better to experience it at night.

The main reason for this is fewer crowds. Especially if you can time it for a weeknight, you’ll be able to ride the cable car without needing to wait in line for an hour.

With the lack of wait times and the fun nature of hopping on an iconic cable car, this is one of the best things to do in San Francisco at night with family.

There’s something magical about zipping up and down SF’s hills at night, just make sure to bring plenty of layers!

The cable cars run from 7 am to 10:30 pm every day of the week.

For more information about how to ride them, read our complete guide to cable cars in San Francisco .

places to visit in bay area - San Francisco chinatown at night

If you’re wondering what to do in San Francisco after dark, head over to Chinatown.

San Francisco’s Chinatown is another tourist attraction that can be seen during the day as well, but it’s a whole different vibe at night.

Although many of the shops and cafes are closed come nighttime, there are some that stay open until 8 or 9 pm.

And after dark is the best time to explore the maze of dim sum restaurants and unique bars on offer in the neighborhood. It’s also much less crowded at night if that’s your jam.

After exploring the streets of Chinatown at night and grabbing some delicious Chinese food, I highly recommend a visit to Li Po Lounge. Li Po is a fun dive bar where the first Chinese Mai Tai was created.

Afterward, stop by Bow Bow Cocktails to get your late-night karaoke on.

Sightseeing Tours

There are quite a few tour companies in San Francisco that offer night tours.

These are ideal options if you’re looking for things to do in San Francisco at night if you’re under 18 or 21, or simply want more options that don’t necessarily involve bars and drinking (minus the pub crawl below).

San Francisco Love Tours – The Night Tour

You don’t get much more San Francisco than San Francisco Love Tours with their totally sweet VW hippie buses that show guests around San Francisco.

The company offers one night tour which starts around 7:30 pm and goes for a couple of hours, showing you some of the most popular neighborhoods around San Francisco at night.

You can learn more about their night tour here .

They also offer a holiday lights tour in December, which you can learn more about here .

Big Bus Tours – Night Tour Ticket

Big Bus Tours doesn’t have quite the same level of personality as the San Francisco Love Tours, but they do offer a night tour ticket that you can use for their double-decker bus.

The bus tour takes you by some of the top attractions in the city as well as lesser-known ones, like Treasure Island, where you can see the San Francisco skyline lit up at night.

It’s one of the least expensive night tour options in San Francisco at $50 for adults and $40 for kids.

Their night tour runs for an hour and a half and departs each night at 6:30 pm.

You can find out more about their night tour here

Get your FREE California Travel Planner – including printable checklists and my favorite two-week itinerary for the state.

San Francisco Ghost Tour

I love a good ghost tour and there are two tour companies in San Francisco that only specialize in running ghost walking tours through the city.

The first option is the San Francisco Ghost Hunt Walking Tour , which has been spooking guests since 1998 and runs for about 1.5-2 hours in the Pacific Heights neighborhood.

Tours run most nights, starting at 7 pm, 7:30 pm, or 8:00 pm, and only cost $30 per person.

Note: Tours are currently paused for the Ghost Hunt Tour but are set to resume in the summer of 2023.

The second company is called The Haunt SF Ghost Tour . They run their 1.5-hour ghost tour Wednesday through Sunday at 7 pm.

This haunted ghost walking tour takes you mostly around Chinatown, includes an EMF meter, and costs $50.

Fort Point Candlelight Tour

A Fort Point Candlelight Tour is a special experience to enjoy that’s put on by the National Park Service.

During the 90-minute tour, a ranger will take you through all four levels of Fort Point, explaining the historic significance of the structure along the way.

This tour is also a fun way to see the Golden Gate Bridge up close at night since Fort Point is right underneath it.

One thing to note is that this is a seasonal tour, only running from November – February, and it sells out quickly.

You can learn more about the tour and grab tickets here .

Pub Crawl San Francisco

If you’re traveling by yourself or in a small group and want to go out but don’t know anyone else in the city, a pub crawl is a fun way to have a raucous night out on the town.

Pub Crawl San Francisco is a company that offers pub crawls to four bars and San Francisco nightclubs in Nob Hill on Friday and Saturday nights at 8 pm.

They also have special event pub crawls throughout the year, such as their St. Patricks Day, 4th of July, Labor Day Weekend, and Halloween crawls.

Tickets are around $20. You can find out more about their pub crawls here .

Broadway Show

bay area activities - broadway

If you’re a theater enthusiast, one of the best ways to spend a night in San Francisco is by going to one of the phenomenal Broadway shows at the Orpheum, Golden Gate Theatre, or Curran Theatre.

I’ve seen Wicked , Hamilton , and Moulin Rouge , all at the Orpheum, and was blown away by how amazing the shows were. I’ve also seen Ain’t Too Proud To Beg at Golden Gate Theatre.

Without a doubt, the shows rivaled the Broadway I’ve seen in New York City.

If you’re staying central and looking for things to do in Union Square, this is a great option since the best theaters are within walking distance.

Learn more about what’s currently playing here .

Bay Bridge Lights

romantic things to do in sf

Since 2013, the Bay Bridge has been gifted with a beautiful light installation that is a treat to see at night (and completely free!).

The Bay Lights was created by Leo Villareal, a world-renowned light artist, and is lit up from dusk to dawn every single night in the city.

Note: The Bay Lights installation is also part of a bigger light festival that happens every year from Thanksgiving through New Year’s Day, called Illuminate SF. Night Bloom that I talk about below is also part of the festival.

If you’re in San Francisco during the holidays, this is one of those things not to miss at night in the city.

During the festival, there are over 39 light installations across 17 neighborhoods from 30+ artists. It’s a sight to see. You can find out more about the festival here .

Giants or Warriors Game

bay area attractions giants game

A favorite pastime for locals is to catch a Giants or Warriors game at night. In fact, it’s one of my favorite things to do on a Saturday night in San Francisco.

The US might not be as crazy as Latin America or Europe when it comes to our sports teams, but we’re pretty obsessed with our Bay Area teams for baseball and basketball.

You can find inexpensive tickets for Giants games, but Warriors games are unfortunately always super expensive. And they will probably be even more so now that they’ve moved to the city instead of Oakland.

Even still, it’s a rite of passage to watch either a Giants or Warriors game (or both) while you’re in the city, and just another way to get to know Bay Area culture at night.

It’s one of most fun local Bay Area attractions to experience in San Francisco, especially if you enjoy watching sports.

You can find tickets for Giants games here and tickets for Warriors games here .

You can find at least a few bars in most neighborhoods around San Francisco, at least those closest to the city center, but five neighborhoods, in particular, come to mind when thinking about San Francisco nightlife.

Those are the Marina, the Mission, the Castro, Polk Street, and North Beach.

Let’s go through each of these, the type of bars they have, and the vibe you tend to find in each one.

Best Neighborhoods for Nightlife in San Francisco

san francisco nightlife - The Marina

I’m just going to come out and say it. The Marina is bro-central. If you’re looking to mingle with white guys in baseball caps and sorority girls, this is the place for you.

The Marina is known as a fun place to go out in San Francisco if you can handle the brotopia scene.

There’s usually dancing at most of the bars, people are slightly better dressed than in other neighborhoods, but there are also a lot of sloppy drunks.

This is a great neighborhood for young 20-somethings and college students (who are over 21, obviously), although you’ll still find plenty of 30-somethings here too.

Best bars in the Marina include : Palm House, Reed & Greenough, White Rabbit, and Jaxson (if you’re looking for a country bar – by San Francisco standards, at least)

The Mission

sunday in san Francisco - Dolores park in the mission

The Mission is a complete 180 from the Marina. In this neighborhood, you’ll find a lot of hipsters, live music, and busy but casual bars to drink in (and sometimes dance in).

If you’re into dive bars, trendy spots to drink, or live music, this is a great neighborhood to go out in. You’ll find people of all ages around the Mission at night, although some bars cater to certain ages more than others.

If you focus on the dive bars especially, you’ll find some of the cheapest drinks in the city around the Mission.

And the great thing is that there are a ton of really good late-night taquerias that are around this neighborhood, which are perfect for a tipsy bite to eat at the end of the night.

Best bars in the Mission include Bender’s (dive bar), Make-out Room (for dancing), and The Chapel (for live music).

friday night in san Francisco - Castro

The Castro is the LGBTQ neighborhood in San Francisco and one of the most fun places to go out if you’re a fan of gay bars and dancing. I mean, who isn’t?

The Castro has a whole lot of personality and is extremely proud of its history as being one of the first gay neighborhoods in the US.

The neighborhood offers a lot of smaller bars with topless men dancing on things, some more divey bars, and a few good pubs too. It’s a slightly more affordable place to go out compared to the Marina.

You’ll find a lot of 30-somethings in the Castro, with some mid-20-year-olds and 40+ gay men as well.

Best bars in the Castro include Twin Peaks, Lookout, The Cafe, Last Call, the Mix, and Q Bar.

Polk Street

san Francisco nightclubs - polk street nightlife

Polk Street is kind of like the Marina’s older brother.

There is still a bit of a bro vibe on Polk, but it’s an older crowd usually consisting of tech bros or young professionals who are in their 30s.

The bars on Polk are more for drinking than dancing and are on the smaller side (minus Playland and Vertigo which are both places to dance in the neighborhood).

This is a great place to go out if you’re a bit older, not as interested in dancing, but want to drink with friends while watching a Warriors Game.

Or, if you’re into trivia, there are some great trivia bars during the week (i.e. Tuesday night trivia at Soda Popinski’s).

This is also the street where most of the city pub crawls happen on special occasions, such as Halloween, SantaCon, and St. Paddy’s Day.

Best bars around Polk Street include : Soda Popinski’s, Harper & Rye, Hi-Lo Club, and Kozy Kar.

North Beach

best nightclubs in san Francisco - north beach

North Beach, also known as Little Italy, is an interesting mix of fancy restaurants, history, clubbing, and San Francisco’s red-light district full of strip clubs.

If you’re looking for variety in your nightlife, North Beach is a good place to start.

Besides historically being the home to Italian immigrants living in the city, North Beach was also the center of the Beatnik movement (go check out City Lights Bookstore to see some of that Beatnik history).

Its history is in large part why it’s still such a versatile neighborhood today.

The vibe in North Beach is a mix of young professionals and tourists.

As I mentioned above, you’ll find pretty much any style of nightlife you want in the neighborhood–pubs, strip clubs, cocktail bars, dance clubs, comedy shows, and more.

It’s a good place to start if you’re not sure where to go and you’ve never been out in San Francisco before.

Best bars in North Beach : 15 Romolo, Comstock Saloon, Vesuvio Cafe, and Monroe.

Best Places for Live Music

There are SO many great places to for live music in San Francisco, it’s one of my favorite aspects about living in the city.

If you’re looking for a more casual place that showcases smaller acts and which you can just purchase tickets at the door, I’d recommend Rickshaw Stop, The Chapel, Black Cat, The Hotel Utah Saloon, Biscuits & Blues, and Boom Boom Room.

If you’re looking for a larger concert venue that hosts bigger acts, I’d recommend The Fillmore, The Independent, Great American Music Hall, The Regency Ballroom, Bill Graham Civic Auditorium, and the Warfield.

Best Places to go Clubbing

If you’re looking for more of a pure night of dancing in a club setting that’s not overly douchey, my picks would be the following for the best nightclubs in San Francisco: The Battery, Cat Club, and F8.

Best Places to Grab a Pint

things to do in south san francisco

There is so much great craft beer in San Francisco, but my favorites would have to include Mikkeller Bar, 21st Amendment Brewery & Restaurant, Cellarmaker Brewing Co., and Harmonic Brewing.

In general, SOMA/Dogpatch is the best place to check out the local beer and brewery scene in San Francisco, although you’ll find local craft beer on tap at most bars around the city.

Related: 30 Best California Breweries to Visit

Best Places to Grab a Glass of Wine

If you’re more of a wine person, there are also plenty of quality wine bars around the city.

I guess that’s not surprising with one of the best wine regions in the world right next door to the city.

A few of the best wine bars in San Francisco include The Hidden Vine, The Barrel Room, Press Club, ENO Wine Bar, Terroir, and Blush!.

Best Places for Cocktails

There are quite a few talented mixologists in San Francisco and various places where you can find quality (and strong) cocktails.

A few favorite spots include Martunis, Novela, Rickhouse, Local Edition, China Live, and Comstock Saloon.

Bar Bars with a View

san francisco skyline at night

With how many hills there are around San Francisco, there are a ton of free views to enjoy around the city at night (which I’ll get into below).

But, if you’re looking for a cozy spot to drink while looking out at the view, these are the places I’d recommend: Top of the Mark, The View Lounge, Cityscape Bar & Lounge, El Techo, and Charmaine’s Rooftop Bar & Lounge.

Best Unique Themed Bars in San Francisco

San Francisco is all about those themed bars, especially speakeasies and tiki bars.

A few of the best themed bars around the city include Bourbon & Branch, Pagan Idol, Topsy’s Bar, Smuggler’s Cove, Butter, Tonga Room, Brewcade, Local Edition, Novela, and Emporium SF.

Other Activities to do at Night in San Francisco (Besides Drinking)

Enjoy the san francisco skyline at night.

If you’re looking for the best cheap things to do in San Francisco in the evening, taking in the San Francisco skyline at night is a beautiful experience and one that you can find all over the city with its many hills.

Just make sure to bring layers because San Francisco gets cold at night, especially high up.

Also, try to not be too disappointed if the view is foggy by the time you get to these spots. Karl the Fog is known to roll in at inopportune times but he’s all a part of the San Francisco experience.

If you’re looking for the best nighttime views in San Francisco, these would be my picks:

Golden Gate Bridge at Night

If you want to see a cool bridge at night, I would recommend the Bay Bridge over the Golden Gate Bridge since the Golden Gate Bridge isn’t super lit up at night.

However, it can still be a magical experience to see the Golden Gate Bridge at night, with all the cars driving back and forth and the city shining in the background.

My favorite viewpoint of the Golden Gate Bridge at night is from Battery Spencer on the Marin side of the bridge looking towards the city, because the lights of the city really light up the view and bring the bridge to life.

Want to walk a cross the Golden Gate Bridge ? Check out our full guide!

One of the best cheap things to do in SF at night? Heading up to Twin Peaks and taking in the city of San Francisco lit up and laid out in front of you. This is by far one of the best spots to take in a nighttime view of San Francisco.

The Ferry to Sausalito or Alcatraz

What better way to take in San Francisco than from the water? Both of the ferries to Sausalito and Alcatraz give stunning views of the San Francisco skyline.

Make it a full night and have a cozy dinner in Sausalito while taking in the beautiful San Francisco skyline at night.

Museum Nights

California academy of sciences nightlife

One of my favorite nighttime events to enjoy in San Francisco is museum nights!

A bunch of museums around the city offer an after-dark nightlife experience every month where you’re able to walk around the museum exhibits after hours with drinks and sometimes even a DJ.

And the best part? It’s adults only.

That means that at kid-friendly museums, such as the Exploratorium, where there are usually a hundred kids running around during the day, adults get to act like kids (with libations) and not have to worry about the young ones.

The majority of the most popular museums in San Francisco offer nightlife events. Including the following:

California Academy of Sciences – every Thursday from 6-10 pm. Every week the California Academy of Sciences nightlife is a different theme (the Pride Night-themed one I went to included a drag queen show, disco competition, and dance floor). There’s usually a DJ and bar at this event. You can purchase tickets here .

Exploratorium After Dark – first Thursday of every month, includes a DJ and bar, and full access to all of the interactive science-related exhibits. You can purchase tickets here .

DeYoung Museum – Friday nights, but their Friday night in San Francisco events are currently on hold since they just started running free Saturdays at the museum. You can find out more about it here .

The after-dark events at the DeYoung are usually more cultural depending on what the theme is, with dance performances, author readings, or craft-making experiences.

Night Bloom at the Conservatory of Flowers – One of my favorite Bay Area activities, this night event only happens for five weeks during the winter, but it’s a fun experience if you happen to be in San Francisco when it’s running.

If you’re looking for things to do in Golden Gate park and want to walk through a psychedelic rainforest at night, this is the event to do it. You can find out more about it here .

things to do in golden gate park

Laugh Out Loud at a Comedy Show

What better way to spend a night in San Francisco than to laugh your butt off?

There are tons of hilarious comedy clubs around San Francisco that have shows running most nights of the week. A few favorites in the city include Cheaper Than Therapy, Punch Line, and The Set-Up.

If improv is more your thing, a few good spots are EndGames Improv, Secret Improv Society, BATS Improv.

Watch a Dance Performance

No matter what type of dance you prefer to watch, chances are San Francisco has a quality production happening right now for you to go see.

San Francisco is known as an artsy city. We have some of the best theater that rivals New York City, a fantastic music scene, and a talented art scene as well – including all kinds of dance performances.

You could choose to go to a more casual dance performance, such as grabbing a bite to eat at Pachamama while watching their Latin dance show, or head to one of the dance theaters in the city, such as Yerba Buena Center for the Arts Theater, ODC Dance, or Smuin Ballet.

hidden gems in san francisco

Enjoy the Opera

If you’re looking for another cultural artsy thing to do in the city at night, the San Francisco Opera is a great choice.

There are always multiple productions going on each season and shows are performed in the ornate and historic War Memorial Opera House that was built in 1932.

You can grab tickets for the opera here .

Experience a Unique Show

san francisco nightlife

San Francisco isn’t just about the traditional art performances, there are a few quirky theater productions around the city that are worth a visit as well.

Unfortunately, my favorite unique theater show in San Francisco is closing down after a 45-year run, Beach Blanket Babylon, but there are plenty of other options in the city to still enjoy.

Running since 1998, AsiaSF is a cabaret dinner show that offers choreographed routines by transgender women and a fixed menu of California-Asian fusion cuisine.

One of the premier gay nightspots in San Francisco for cabaret drag shows, located in a former bathhouse. They also host DJs and dance parties in addition to their drag shows.

Marrakech Magic Theater

If you’re looking for an intimate magic show, this is the top-rated option in the city.

Right next to Union Square, Marrakech Magic Theater stars the talented magician Jay Alexander and offers shows Thursday through Sunday.

You can grab tickets here .

Feinstein’s at the Nikko

Feinstein’s is a classy establishment that offers cabaret shows and American songbook performances in a swanky interior.

Grab a Bite to Eat at Off the Grid

One of the best family-friendly things to do in San Francisco is grabbing a bite to eat at Off the Grid. Off the Grid is the ultimate food truck experience in San Francisco that happens all over the city.

Their Presidio Picnics on the weekends are probably the most famous food truck event that they offer, but they have a couple of evening food truck extravaganzas on offer as well.

There’s one on Friday nights at Fort Mason from 5 pm – 10 pm, and another one on Thursday nights in the Presidio from 5 pm – 9 pm.

You can find out more about the food truck events here .

Note: Off the Grid doesn’t run in the winter months .

Romantic Things to do in San Francisco at Night

cheap things to do in san francisco

Obviously, these activities can all be done with friends or even solo, but if you’re specifically looking for a few romantic things to do in SF for a fun date night, these options are a good place to start.

Foreign Cinema

Foreign Cinema is actually more of a restaurant than it is a traditional movie theater, but their schtick is showing a film in the background while you enjoy a sensual atmosphere and delicious Californian-Mediterranean cuisine.

This popular San Francisco restaurant has been open for 20 years and has made the list of ‘Top 100 restaurants in San Francisco’ in the San Francisco Chronicle for 18 consecutive years.

You could say they’ve had a pretty impressive run so far.

This is one of the most popular date night activities to do in San Francisco so make sure to book well in advance. You can book a spot here .

Film Night with the SF Symphony

Another movie-related activity (with much more emphasis on the movie) is going to a film night with the San Francisco Symphony.

During these events, some of Hollywood’s most popular movies are shown at the Davies Symphony Hall with the movie score performed live by the SF Symphony.

It’s a magical experience to hear the live score of Star Wars or Harry Potter as the film is running. You can grab tickets for their film night here .

Go Dancing (Not at a Club)

cheap things to do in sf

I’m not saying that a traditional club isn’t romantic – you do you – but, if you’re looking for something a bit more sensual as opposed to bump and grind, I’d recommend checking out one of the fantastic Latin or swing clubs around the city.

A few good options include Latin American Club, SalsaCrazy Saturday Salsa Club, El Toro Night Club, Cigar Bar, Cat’s Corner, and The 9:20 Special.

Roller Skating at Church of 8 Wheels

One of those hidden gems in San Francisco, if you’re looking for a more unique date idea (friend dates are welcome too!), roller skating at Church of 8 Wheels is a good option.

You could say that the Church of 8 Wheels is the best roller rink in San Francisco. It’s located in an old church and encourages funky vibes (aka bell bottoms are encouraged).

And the great thing about this roller rink is they have adult-only skate sessions, so you don’t have to worry about accidentally being cut off by a kiddo while you twirl around the rink.

Late-Night Movie Showing

why is san francisco so cold

You can probably tell I’m a big fan of movies. It also helps that there are so many options for movie-related activities in San Francisco at night.

If you’ve already tried out Foreign Cinema and Film Night with the SF Symphony, or you’re simply looking for something a bit more low-key, a late-night movie showing is always a good bet.

Clay Theatre offers regular midnight showings of classic or cult films every month, and it is a great choice for those who are looking for more of a late-night activity in San Francisco.

Another option if you’re looking for a unique movie experience but don’t want to stay up until midnight, is going to one of the sing-a-long shows at the Castro Theatre.

You can belt out your favorite songs with everyone else in the crowd while Grease or The Little Mermaid plays on the screen.

Dinner Cruise

And finally, a super fun (albeit chilly) nighttime experience in San Francisco is going on a Hornblower Dinner Cruise.

If you’re looking for a classy evening out on the Bay, Hornblower is the most popular option for a dinner cruise in San Francisco.

Their nightly cruises include a four-course dinner, a dance floor and DJ, and plenty of beautiful nighttime views of famous San Francisco landmarks, like the Golden Gate Bridge.

You can learn more about Hornblower’s Dinner Cruise  here .

As you can see, there are plenty of options for what to do in San Francisco at night.

Whether you’re more interested in nightlife, looking for a family-friendly outing, or a solo adventure, there’s a little something for everyone in this Bay Area city.

7 Exciting Evening Tours to Enjoy in San Francisco

Wondering what to do with a free evening in San Francisco? Check out one of the city’s most famous night tours below. From chilling ghost tours to segway rides to pub crawls, there is something for everyone!

Why Take an Evening Tour of San Francisco

The beautiful city lights alone are worth wandering outside after dark, but there is more to nighttime San Francisco than that.

Did you know that San Francisco is actually one of the most haunted cities in all of the United States?

The ghosts like to keep to themselves during the day, but a few always come out to play after the fog rolls in.

1. Alcatraz Night Tour

Alcatraz Island, home to one of the most brutal maximum-security prisons to have ever existed, is one of the most haunted locations in all of the United States.

The souls of the ruthless criminals who spent their last days here still can’t find peace… So don’t be surprised if you run into a ghost or two.

The Alcatraz Night Tour has a limited number of visitors , which allows the prison personnel to open up additional areas for visitors to see.

Keep in mind that these tours only run Thursday to Monday nights. To be safe, book them as soon as they become available (90 days in advance).

And don’t forget to bring a jacket ! San Francisco gets significantly cooler at night, and Alcatraz Island tends to be particularly chilly.

2. Night Segway Tour

If you want to experience San Francisco in a slightly odd, yet fun way, consider taking a Night Segway Tour.

The tour lasts about 2.5 hours and takes you through some of San Francisco’s most charming neighborhoods, beginning at Fisherman’s Wharf and ending up in Little Italy and Chinatown.

Don’t worry if you have never ridden a segway before! The tour includes 30 to 45 minutes of training to get you acquainted with the self-balancing vehicle.

3. Double Decker Night Tour

If balancing on a segway is not your thing, and you’d rather chill out during your evening of exploring San Francisco, the Double Decker Night Tour of San Francisco could be for you.

Just sit back, relax, and soak in the lights of San Francisco as the bus driver takes you past all the top sights.

In just 2 hours, you will see most of San Francisco’s charming neighborhoods , including North Beach and Chinatown.

You should also be able to get some fantastic shots of the Bay Bridge lights when the bus drives by there!

4. Downtown Craft Cocktail Tour

The Craft Cocktail Tour is a great introduction to San Francisco’s bar scene – and a great start to a fun Friday night out!

The tour starts with a short lesson on bitters at Pacific Cocktail Haven in Union Square.

Afterward, you will hit up other popular locations for a few cocktails, learn more about the history of the Union Square District and even discover some hidden cocktail-related gems in the area.

The Downtown Craft Cocktail Tour lasts a total of 3 hours and runs most Friday and Saturday nights.

The cocktail tour includes a few food pairings, but you might want to grab a bite beforehand if you are a bit of a lightweight!

5. Mission District Night Tour

The Mission District in San Francisco is one of the best places to recommend to your foodie friends and visitors.

In addition to several excellent food tastings ranging from seasonal pastries to tacos , you will stop by the Dandelion Chocolate for a short chocolate-making tour.

If you love to sample new dishes and experience different cultures, this tour is a must for you!

6. Chinatown/North Beach Walking Tour

A simple walking tour can be much more exciting at night!

This one starts off in Chinatown where you will watch how fortune cookies are made , enjoy some dim sum from one of the oldest bakeries there, as well as savor some traditional Chinese tea.

In North Beach, you will sample Italian coffee, pizza, and wine , while learning about the top hangout spots of the Beat Generation.

7. North Beach Pub Crawl

Are you a fan of the Beat Generation? Then the North Beach Pub Crawl is for you!

This 2.5-hour tour will take you straight to Jack Kerouac’s favorite San Francisco spot , The Vesuvio Cafe.

You can just imagine Kerouac sitting there by the window, sipping his margarita!

The tour will also take you to the famed City Light Bookstore, as well as several other popular bars and restaurants where the artists of the Beat Generation ate, drank, and worked on their craft.

A MESSAGE FROM THE FOUNDER

I simply can’t imagine a better way of experiencing going up and down the hills of San Francisco than in a VW-hippie bus. The allure of these adorable V-Dubs are only matched by the marvelous sights and stories encapsulated by this ever-changing city. People wanting to ride in a VW bus are kindred spirits who appreciate a small, family-like experience with guides that love storytelling as much as they love living in this city. These are genuine experiences, befriending authentic people, making extraordinaire memories. ~ Allan

DOUBLE-DECKER BUS NIGHT TOURS

There are multiple bus tours that provide a look at the city of San Francisco after dark.

Most of them are on open-top, double-decker buses which will allow you to see as much of the city as possible.

These aren’t the same as hop-on hop-off bus tours as they have closed routes and you can’t jump off wherever you want.

That said, you will have many opportunities to take photos as you learn about the city at night.

Big Bus Tours

In addition to their daily hop-on hop-off bus tours, this company also offers a night bus tour which covers a lot of the most popular neighborhoods in San Francisco.

With tours starting at either 6:30 pm or 7 pm, you’ll have the chance to see sites such as Fisherman’s Wharf, the Golden Gate Bridge, and more as the sun goes down.

  • $45/Adults | $35/Children
  • Availability: Nightly
  • Duration: 1 ½ hours
  • Purchase tickets or learn more .

NOTE: This tour is included for free with both the Premium and Deluxe tickets which include a hop-on hop-off bus tour, a guided walking tour, and more.

Skyline Sightseeing

This tour is offered by the other major hop-on hop-off bus tour company in San Francisco, and they provide almost exactly the same service, right down to the departure times of both 6:30 pm and 7 pm.

Much like their competitors, they visit mostly the same sites, including the Golden Gate Bridge, Fisherman’s Wharf, and more.

One notable difference is the price, which is a bit more affordable though Big Bus has a better review profile.

  • $34.99/Adults | $24.99/Children

NOTE: This tour is included for free with some hop-on hop-off bus tickets from City Sightseeing (Skyline). To learn more, check our post about San Francisco Bus Tours .

If you’re looking for a longer outing, this company offers an open-top bus tour after dark which actually starts a little later than their competitors at 7:30 pm and lasts twice as long!

Tickets are a bit more expensive because the tour is much longer.

  • $65/Adults | $35/Children
  • Availability: Thur-Sat
  • Duration: 3 hours

NIGHT BAY CRUISES

There are a variety of cruises you can take on the San Francisco Bay during the sunset and even after dark.

While some of these outings are traditional sightseeing tours, others are dinner cruises which include a meal and often music/dancing.

San Francisco Night Cruise

Red and White Fleet

This is one of the most historic and popular cruise companies in the Bay Area, and they offer a sunset/twilight cruise which begins at 7 pm each night and lasts for a couple of hours.

In addition to seeing the skyline from the water after dark, you’ll also have the opportunity to enjoy live music, an appetizer buffet, and a complimentary drink!

  • $80/Adults | $52/Youth
  • Duration: 2 hours

Hornblower Cruises

If you’re looking for a full meal on your evening cruise, this company offers a service with four-course dinners, live music, and dancing.

Wine and cocktails will also be available for purchase onboard.

Although prices for this dinner cruise are definitely higher than some competitors, you’re getting a lot more bang for your buck and the outing also lasts a bit longer than other services.

  • $150 and up per person
  • Availability: Tue - Sun
  • Duration: 2 ½ hours

Adventure Cat Sailing

This is actually the cheapest cruise option on our list, and it might also be more favorable for some tourists, as this sunset cruise takes place on a catamaran.

If you’d rather experience a sunset sail than an evening or dinner cruise, this is an excellent alternative.

Although this service is shorter, you will receive some appetizers and complimentary drinks with your ticket.

  • $60 per person
  • Availability: Almost every night

ALCATRAZ NIGHT TOUR

Did you know you can actually visit Alcatraz at night ?

Visitors who have some of the last tickets of the day are allowed to stay until after dark and see the island as they begin to shut everything down.

Alcatraz Night Tours

The park rangers at Alcatraz will even tell you special stories and show you some of the spookier things on the island during this time to make the experience even more memorable.

This tour is only offered twice a day every Thursday - Monday, and prices are a bit higher than standard ticket prices, but they’re still less than $50 per person.

These tickets can be difficult to obtain, and in the busy season you can expect them to sell out months in advance, so we recommend planning out this activity as much as possible.

Be sure to read our post on Alcatraz night tours as well as our post on visiting Alcatraz during the day .

TUK TUK, SEGWAY, AND BIKE TOURS AT NIGHT

If you’re looking for a different way to see the city after dark, there are two options you may want to consider which will provide a unique look at San Francisco.

Each service is a bit longer than usual at an average of 2 ½ - 3 hours in duration, so even if they cost a bit more, it might be worth the price if you’re looking for an interesting experience.

Electric Tour Company

This tour will allow you to discover San Francisco after dark and use a segway to get from one site to another.

Guests can expect to visit 3 different neighborhoods: Chinatown, Embarcadero, and the Waterfront.

San Francisco Segway Tour Picture

Before the tour begins, you’ll be given a 45-50 minute training session to help you become familiar with the segway.

You’ll also be given helmets and safety vests to ensure your safety. You must be over the age of 12 to ride.

  • $75 per person
  • Availability: Fri - Sun

Lucky Tuk Tuk Tours

This company currently offers two different tours after dark: a San Francisco lights tour and a craft beer crawl.

If you’re wondering what a Tuk Tuk is, think of it as a moped with extended seating.

Each tour is limited to 5 people (6 with kids), so tickets can be a bit more expensive.

While their San Francisco lights tour is more of a sightseeing trip, the craft beer crawl is all about sampling different local brews.

Needless to say, the beer crawl is a bit more expensive than the sightseeing option.

San Francisco Lights Tour

  • Tickets: $65 per person
  • Availability: Nightly at 7:30 pm

San Francisco Craft Beer Crawl

  • Tickets: $119 per rider
  • Availability: Daily at 2 pm & 7 pm

The Essential SF Night Bike Tour

If you’re looking for another interesting way to see the city after dark, it’s hard to beat riding a bike lined with decorative lights!

In addition to seeing all the major sites in San Francisco, you’ll also learn about some of the best places to grab a pizza and the most fun backroads to ride on a bicycle.

Beginning at 6 pm, this bike tour is a few hours long and it covers several neighborhoods such as the Embarcadero, South Beach, Mission Bay, and many others.

  • Tickets: $74/Adults | $69/Children
  • Availability: Thursdays at 6 pm
  • Duration: 3 ½ - 4 hours

COCKTAIL TOURS

In addition to the beer crawl offered by Lucky Tuk Tuk tours, there is also at least one cocktail tour you can take which will allow you to try some of the best drinks in San Francisco after the sun goes down.

Edible Excursions

This company offers a craft cocktail tour that covers a variety of different drinks you may have never even heard about before. The tour begins in the evening and lasts for a few hours.

In addition to attending a workshop on cocktail party menus and designs, you’ll also have an opportunity to try 4-5 different cocktails and even enjoy a few bar bites.

  • Tickets: $91 per person
  • Availability: Bi-weekly on Thursday

SAN FRANCISCO GHOST TOURS

If you’re interested in learning about the darker side of San Francisco, there are some ghost tours that cover a variety of disturbing subjects from throughout the history of the city.

These services are typically shorter than a sightseeing tour, but they are a great way to learn about the more twisted aspects of historic neighborhoods in the area.

Colonial Ghosts

This ghost tour covers a lot of notable locations in San Francisco including Nob Hill, Union Square, the Sutter building, and more.

While walking around the city with your guide, you’ll discover potentially haunted hotels, streets, clubs, and more.

Although this outing is only an hour-long, it includes several photo opportunities and a lot of historical information you might not hear about on your average sightseeing tour.

  • $22/Adults | $14/Children
  • Availability: Nightly at 8 pm
  • Duration: 1 hour

San Francisco Ghosts

The extended tour offered by this company is an excellent alternative to other options if you’re looking for something a bit longer, and it covers a lot of the same subjects and locations in San Francisco.

Over the course of more than an hour, you’ll visit locations like Nob Hill and the Sutter Building where you’ll hear about the potentially haunted history of each site.

  • Tickets: $29/Adults | $20.50/Children

He knew everyone around town, and shared little tidbits which I doubt we would've gotten in other tours. He's also FUNNY. We laughed a.lot. And did I mention you can drink on the bus? Well worth the trip! Recommended! Read more Written September 24, 2023

He knows the city inside out and his casual banner made for a very fun and light hearted day! Loved, will recommend to anyone who wants to do a live tour on an open bus. • S5404AZjamiek 0 contributions 5.0 of 5 bubbles Birthday extravaganza I couldn’t have asked for a better experience! I planned a private tour for my boyfriend’s birthday, and we created our own scenic route that was special to him. They picked us up right at our house and dropped us off where we wanted to go. We had all of friends on the top of the bus, played our own music and had a great time while we drive all around the city and over the bridge. The driver was so nice and made the experience easy and fun. It was an afternoon we will never forget. Read more Written September 24, 2023

Music | apple chops hundreds of jobs in silicon valley in fresh tech layoffs, music | review: bruce springsteen delivers incredible evening of music for fans, bruce springsteen rocks chase center in san francisco.

Jetlag? What jetlag?

Bruce Springsteen certainly seemed no worse for wear after making two quick cross-country flights over the last few days before playing what turned out to be a dynamite show at Chase Center in San Francisco on Thursday.

The Rock and Roll Hall of Famer performed Monday in San Diego then zoomed back East to make a guest appearance (with fellow troubadour Maggie Rogers) at a show by country star Zach Bryan at Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday night.

Then it was right back to the West Coast in time to play the first of two sold-out shows at the home of the Golden State Warriors.

The next gig is on Sunday, which gives Springsteen time to — oh, I don’t know — perhaps fly to Kauai for fish tacos before returning to Chase for Night 2.

And if he does decide to do just that, well, you can rest assured that he’ll still deliver the goods for Bay Area fans on Easter Sunday.

That’s why he’s The Boss.

The 74-year-old Springsteen was in nothing short of legendary form as he led his mighty E Street Band through a 29-song show that absolutely captivated the approximately 16,500 fans in attendance for three hours.

He’d draw from a wide selection of his songbook, touching upon 11 of his studio albums. There were a few debuts for this 2024 tour — which, granted, is only a few dates old at this point — as well as the favorites fans can pretty much expect to hear at every Springsteen show these days.

Backed by 17 people onstage — including a versatile horn section and excellent backing vocalists — the bandleader opened the show right around 7:45 p.m. with “Something in the Night,” one of five songs that he’d pull from the classic 1978 platter “Darkness on the Edge of Town.”

The song — which was being played live for the first time on this tour — proved to be a bit of a mellow starter, but things would quickly heat up as The Boss turned to 2002’s “The Rising” for a powerful version of “Lonesome Day.”

The next two offerings, “Ghosts” and “Two Hearts,” were both solid, but the show reached a whole new level when Springsteen and company unleashed “Prove It All Night.” The tune, another “Darkness on the Edge of Town” standout, featured the first prominent sax work from Jake Clemons (who is the nephew of the late E Street legend Clarence Clemons) as well as some really aggressive and muscular guitar playing from the bandleader himself.

They’d keep the party rolling in high gear with the defiant “Born in the U.S.A.” anthem “No Surrender” before thrilling the audience with the tour debut of “Atlantic City,” delivering a full-band version that shared the lyrics — and not much else — with the stark solo recording originally found on 1982’s “Nebraska.”

Springsteen’s voice was on point throughout the night, showing no signs of the medical condition that originally forced him to postpone these Chase shows — which were originally scheduled for last December — as well as other dates. The star did bring up the subject about 80 minutes into the show, which was first time he paused to really talk to the crowd all evening.

“My belly hurt so bad, I couldn’t sing,” explained Springsteen, who underwent treatment for peptic ulcer disease. “Every time I went to sing, my belly ached. When I went to do anything, my belly ached. Then it ached some more. So, we couldn’t make it. But I’m glad to be back tonight.”

The last third of the main set was all A-list material, as the singer rolled through “Backstreets,” “Because the Night,” “She’s the One,” “Wrecking Ball,” “The Rising” and “Badlands” before closing, some 130 minutes after he started the show, with the always-popular “Thunder Road.”

The 18 musicians would take their well-deserved bows, but then, instead of leaving the stage, it was right back to business as they rolled through a generous encore highlighted by “Land of Hope and Dreams” (another tour debut), “Tenth Avenue Freeze-Out” and, of course, “Born to Run.”

“San Francisco!” Springsteen exclaimed as the encore drew to a close. “I want you to go home tonight and then I want you to wake up tomorrow morning and I want you to tell everybody that you see that you that you’ve just seen the heart-stopping, pants-dropping, earth-shocking, hard-rocking, booty-shaking, earth-quaking, love-making, Viagra-taking, history-making legendary E Street Band.”

Consider it done, Boss.

Venerable surf combo Los Straitjackets plays the Chapel

By Dave Pehling

Updated on: March 30, 2024 / 2:01 PM PDT / CBS San Francisco

Masked surf rockers Los Straitjackets bring their latest tour to San Francisco Saturday night, sharing the stage at the Chapel with fellow veterans Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys.

Initially founded in Nashville during the late '80s as the Straitjackets by noted rockabilly guitarist Eddie Angel and former guitarist with NYC neo-surf instrumentalists the Raybeats Danny Amis, the short-lived group that toured backing country singer Webb Wilder and rockabilly revivalist Robert Gordon before splitting up. The group wouldn't take off until they reformed in 1994 as Los Straitjackets and began performing with their signature lucha libre wrestling masks and matching suits.

Delivering a high-octane style of instrumental surf originals and standards, the band would enjoy increasing popularity through the '90s as part of the post  Pulp Fiction  resurgence of interest in surf sounds. The versatile musicians would also become prolific collaborators, welcoming a variety of vocalists including Big Sandy, El Vez (aka Robert Lopez, the singer for early LA punk band the Zeros), the Reverend Horton Heat  and Exene to participate on the  Sing Along with Los Straitjackets  album. They have also recorded and toured with roots rock great Deke Dickerson and British songwriter and power-pop icon Nick Lowe, who they paid tribute to with their album  What's So Funny About Peace, Love And...  in 2017. The band's most recent effort -- the  Channel Surfing  EP -- found Los Straitjackets tackling several television theme songs including the indelible title music to "Game of Thrones."

For the band's current jaunt that stops at the Chapel on Saturday , they are joined by Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys. The SoCal based roots-rock outfit has been entertaining audiences with their fiery mix of rockabilly and Western swing for over three decades.

Los Straitjackets with Big Sandy and his Fly-Rite Boys Saturday, March 30, 7:30 p.m. $30-$35 The Chapel

Live Shots: Bruce Springsteen rocked Chase Center with a marathon set

The Boss barreled through hits and some surprising covers on the second night of his SF appearance.

The Boss looked lithe and trim as he hit the Chase Center stage on March 31—launching into “Light of Day,” which he hasn’t played since 2016 with his E Street Band—also in great form on the second night of his San Francisco appearance, and the fifth night of his world tour. His marathon set of more than three dozen songs (remarkably delivered after just recovering from an illness ) included classics like “Thunder Road,” “Born to Run,” and “Glory Days,” as well as some covers like “Night Shift” by the Commodores and “Because the Night” by Patti Smith. A thrilled crowd sang along, and posed beforehand under the new “Bruce Springsteen and E Street Band” street signs, dedicated by the SFMTA.
